My Little Corner This picture makes me smile. It was taken on Mother’s Day seven years ago, back when my daughter, Jaiden, was the smallest of the girls.

First she overtook my mom, then my sister, and lastly me, to claim the title of tallest female in the family.

As she has grown, I’ve learned much about motherhood and its challenges, responsibilities and rewards.

This same little girl will graduate in a few weeks and move on to university, and a new chapter in life, this fall. My role as mom will shift yet again — it’s one that’s ever-changing. It’s also one I have taken for granted in times when life seems to sail smoothly forward.

Over the past months I’ve often found myself in reflection mode, wondering how it can be that my little girl is now a young woman preparing to stretch her wings and take flight into adulthood.

An editorial by Shannon Robin I also see my mom in a different light and with new appreciation as I get older.

My mom has loved me unconditionally through thick and thin and I know she always will. We grow as a family through shared experiences, good and bad.

I admire my mom and wish, in many ways, I was more like her.

This is typically one of the easiest columns for me to write each year, but I’m struggling today. In the past year, and particularly the past two weeks, moms I know have lost children and grandchildren in tragic circumstances. My heart is heavy as I contemplate how difficult this Mother’s Day, and each one that follows, will be.

I’ve realized how precious every moment of every day truly is. Today I simply want to say “I love you” to my mom and my daughter, and to thank them for the light they bring to my life.

Chamber looks for businesses to bloom Pincher Creek and District Chamber of Commerce is encouraging businesses to showcase our community and get into the spirit of Communities in Bloom by reintroducing the Businesses in Bloom competition.

Judging will take place July 6, with winners being announced July 10.

After scoring the registered businesses on four different criteria — overall impression, general tidiness, floral displays and freedom from weeds — the judging committee will award prizes in two categories: best commercial and best industrial. First-prize and honourable-mention winners will be named in both categories.

Students excel in arts of baking and welding

By Brad Quarin Students of Matthew Halton High School triumphed again in Skills Canada regional competitions this year, and the school’s master welder will be advancing to provincials.

William Lindfield received a gold medal in welding in a competition for youth from southwestern Alberta, while Cayleigh Duffield won her first medal with a bronze in baking.

The provincials take place in Edmonton on May 13 and 14. William says he’s looking forward to it and his goal is simply “to do the best I can.”

Six students went to the regionals in Lethbridge.

Cayleigh has participated in Skills Canada before, so she knew what to expect and was calmer about the experience.

She had four hours to bake braided bread, six “free-formed” buns, six cream puffs and chocolate tarts, as well as to decorate a cake.

It took the whole four hours but she finished everything, and feels good about winning her first medal in Skills Canada. She imagines she will compete again next year.

Baking is a relaxing hobby that leaves “a lot of room for creativity,” particularly in recipes and decoration, she says. She has been baking since Grade 8 and is in Grade 11 now.

Meanwhile, the school’s gold medallist was a last-minute entry. William was aware the competition was coming up, but didn’t know when. John Taylor, off-campus co-ordinator for Livingstone Range School Division, alerted him in time.

William, who is in Grade 12, finds welding interesting as a practice that is in great demand and that can be fun, like an art form.

John describes William as “quiet, hard-working, passionate about welding, and just an all-round good guy.”

In his welding, William has had crucial support from his family and Boulder Metal Industries, where he is apprenticing, John says.

Boulder Metal has been a great asset in training William and supplying Matthew Halton High School with materials.

William has worked at Boulder Metal for 2½ years, welding when he can and also paint-

ing, sandblasting and sweeping.

That training came in handy at the regionals, where he was given materials and welded in the MIG and SMAW methods.

“It was a competitive atmosphere, but it was pretty friendly,” he says. It felt good to win gold.

This isn’t the first time Matthew Halton High School was well represented in Skills Canada. Numerous students have won medals, and one of them, Caelan Taylor, went to the national culinary competition last year.

School projects seen through the eyes of a scientist

By Brad Quarin At the end of April, Isabelle Sellon School in Blairmore put on a science fair for the first time.

The top-floor hallway was filled with cool experiments put together by enthusiastic children, while others explored some scientific activities in the gym. But what would a professional scientist have to say about the efforts of these fledgling experimenters?

Geophysicist Rachel Newrick stopped by the school to have a look.

“I think it’s fantastic that ISS has started the science fair,” she said. “To have a school and be in an area of such great natural beauty … to have all these natural experiments we can conduct — I think it’s great.”

Rachel is a New Zealand native who moved to Calgary and now lives in Bellevue, and is president of the Canadian Society of Exploration Geophysicists.

Her partner, Ian Crawford, is a substitute teacher at ISS, so principal Paul Pichurski asked her to be the “visiting Photo by Brad Quarin scientist” at ISS. would make a house hotter proved to be correct when the student placed thermometers in garbage bins with different-coloured lids.

Another experiment tested camouflage by seeing if an M&M could be spotted among Skittles.

“What I like is that most of the experiments have set up a hypothesis — what do they think is going to happen? — and then they design an experiment to test it,” Rachel said. “From those observations, they come to a conclusion, and they’re so excited about it!”

The Grade 5 and 6 students, in particular, seemed on top of things in explaining their projects.

Even a geophysicist could learn something from a school science fair. Rachel said one experiment demonstrated that cystic fibrosis could affect more people than she thought.

“And I learned that you can make incredible crystals out of coal.”

Students Noah Doell and Brayden Anctil teamed up on making those crystals. “We have chemicals and stuff to put the coal in,” Brayden said. “It’ll take eight hours, and then we’re going to be able to form crystals.”

Ian was also impressed with the first science fair, and found it hard to pick a favourite experiment.

“The level of enthusiasm and the diversity of the projects is great,” he said.

“Your junk is our treasure”

By Brad Quarin This Friday, 43 students of Crowsnest Consolidated High School will celebrate the momentous feat of graduation.

Fittingly, the theme chosen for the ceremonies is A Black Tie Affair.

“Our class wanted something classic and simple,” says valedictorian Aislinn Maguire.

The grad in charge of decorating, Dylan Davis, says the theme will be reflected with black decorations surrounding a brighter centre, resembling a chandelier.

The guest speaker is Ryan Kubik, who graduated from CCHS and became a CEO. “We thought he could offer some insight on success after high school,” Aislinn says.

Teacher Ian Baxter describes this year’s graduating class as a good group, with many students going on to post-secondary schools and others planning to work.

It’s a mix of academic and athletic students, with a few in band as well. The class includes the first 10 students to go to Finland through

the Finland-Alberta International Partnership with Kitee Upper Secondary School, Ian says.

“We are a funny and incredibly talented group of individuals,” Aislinn says. “There is never a moment in our grade that isn’t punctuated with a great joke or witty remark.”

Dylan also feels it’s a good group, with a majority of students graduating with good grades. He says many are interested in becoming emergency responders. He’s one of them, planning to go to Lethbridge College and then to a training camp in Regina to join the RCMP. Meanwhile, Aislinn will go to the University of Alberta to major in neuroscience.

She and Dylan both describe graduation as exciting and a little scary at the same time.

“You’re entering a new life,” Dylan says, and he will experience things rather than simply hear about them.

The messenger

I wrote this story some years ago in tribute to my mother, Evelyn Yuill, who died in 1952 after a long history of illness and hospitalization. She left her children, however, a wealth of wonderful memories for the times when she was well.

The noon dismissal bell sounded and the school emptied rapidly, the country students taking their lunch pails out under the newly leafed trees or around the benches at the softball diamond. Those who were town residents spilled onto the streets in all directions in anticipation of a hot lunch.

All were excited but one nine-year-old straggler, whose reluctance to turn her steps toward home stemmed from an anxiety of what awaited her there. The small knot of hurt in her stomach bore no relationship to hunger, but was, rather, an uneasiness brought about by her mother’s failure to get up to see her off to school that morning.

This pattern usually indicated she was having a “spell,” as the family referred to the convulsive seizures she was afflicted with; weeks and sometimes months passed with no sign of illness and then it would return abruptly like a violent storm on a summer day. These events turned the loving, gentle parent into an incoherent stranger.

The child scuffed her shoes along the sidewalk, worrying if Mother would be lying half-conscious on the floor while the baby wailed pitifully for attention from her crib. The scraping sound of leather on dusty pavement reminded her that Mother had asked her not to add to the wear on her shoes by this shuffling of her feet, and she walked more carefully.

Her steps took her past the open door of the hardware store where, from its cool, dim interior, she could hear the proprietor, Mr. King, whistling slightly off key. He was a kind, friendly man, but he would never be the whistler her mother was, her clear musical trills as perfect as the meadowlark’s. When she was feeling well and busy with her family and home, the sound of this accomplished whistling floated out the open door and windows, pleasing the ear of neighbours and passersby alike. It was a sign of domestic serenity like no other to her husband and children.

As the small figure worked her way regretfully toward her destination, she wished that somehow Daddy could have had lunch at home, so he’d have arrived and taken charge. But she knew he was miles away in the city where his job took him each day, and she was grateful that today her little brother was there with him.

The butterflies in her stomach again made their presence felt, and to forget about them, she thought of the Mother’s Day cards Miss Belton had her Grade 4 class making for this Sunday. She had already decided to pick her mother two daffodils and a tulip from the borders at the vacant house on the back street. There was no one there to miss them and Mother would appreciate them so.

Now, despite her dawdling, she was just over a block away from the tiny unpainted house. Just — she counted in her head — six doors and she’d have to face whatever the situation presented.

Suddenly, she paused and tilted her head slightly; there it was again.

Carried on the warm, moist spring air, along with the scent of crabapple and chokecherry blossoms and the buzzing of insects, was the unmistakable, joyous sound of someone whistling — clear, high-pitched notes like few other humans could produce.

Creating memories at St. Michael’s School

By Brad Quarin Memories are the focus of grad ceremonies for St. Michael’s School this year, as 19 students will graduate from high school.

The students at the Pincher Creek school chose Memories as their theme, and will likely find that graduation creates plenty of memories for the future.

Grad Jayden Kennedy says memories will be captured mainly through slide shows, with some pictures showing each grad and some showing classmates together.

Grads will mark their achievements over two days, starting with mass at St. Michael’s Church on Friday.

On Saturday, they will have their ceremonies at Pincher Creek Community Hall at 2 p.m., with certificates handed out and a banquet.

The valedictorian is Tessa Roy, who was selected because of her grades, and she says she is proud of that achievement.

The speaker at the ceremonies will be English teacher Lauranna Charette. The students have a great deal of respect for Lauranna, and since they connected with her, she has this year’s speaker role, says principal Don Kuchison.

Generally, Don sees this grad class as a good group who are keen on academics and work hard for success.

Tessa describes the group as pretty close. While everyone is a unique individual, they all hang out together, and many have been together since elementary school.

It feels crazy to be graduating, as it seems to be happening very fast, Tessa says.

Jayden finds graduating hard to believe. She remembers seeing high school grads as a child and thinking they were so grown up. It’s also exciting because it means grads will experience new things.

After school, Jayden plans to go to the University of Lethbridge to study kinesiology. Tessa also plans to go to the U of L, to take general sciences, and has not yet decided on where to go from there.

Top speller is off to Montreal

By Brad Quarin Caleb Evans has a ticket to Montreal, where he is representing southern Alberta French immersion students in an international French spelling competition.

The Grade 6 student of St. Michael’s School in Pincher Creek won a medal after the regional level competition and will be leaving on May 22.

“It’s a great opportunity. I’m really glad for it,” Caleb says. “I’ve always wanted to go to Montreal.”

It’s the second time St. Michael’s School and Caleb’s family have sent a student to the international competition. His cousin Mya Citrigno went last year.

La Dictée PGL Project has students transcribe an orally-presented paragraph with as few errors as possible. The program also aims to teach students about the world and the environment.

Caleb has been studying French since Grade 1 at St. Michael’s School, starting with teacher Dominique Plouffe-Chandler. He learns a little French at home as well, as his mom and sisters took French immersion. Caleb says his French is good enough to understand French TV. It’s a good thing that St. Michael’s School offers French immersion. “I really like it. I think it’s a great program,” he says.

The teachers are encouraging, and sometimes make it fun with French games.

Knowing the language can also be useful if Caleb travels or is applying for a job.

Still, competing in French spelling is new to him, and he had no idea how he would do going into the competition.

The St. Michael’s School level was fun, given that he knew everyone else in the competition, so he knew that he or a friend would be going to regionals.

Caleb wrote the regional test in Pincher Creek, with results faxed to Calgary.

A factual story was dictated in the test, but his strategy is to focus on each word rather than the story.

He wound up winning a spot in the international competition, and will be going with his dad for five days. Expenses for Caleb are covered, says teacher Dominique Plouffe-Chandler.

Caleb has seen photos of Montreal and heard good things, so he’s looking forward to his first trip to Quebec. His cousin Mya is also filling him in on what to expect in the competition.

“I’m in awe that I actually made it to the internationals,” he says. “I’m going to study hard and try to do my best there.”

Be prepared for an emergency with your own 72-hour kit

By Brad Quarin This is both Emergency Preparedness Week and a week of appreciation for Alberta firefighters, and Crowsnest Pass Fire and Rescue will be marking the occasion with a barbecue tonight.

Firefighters, their families and the public are welcome at the Blairmore firehall from 6 to 9 p.m. for an open house and bratwursts, to give thanks to volunteer responders.

Fire Chief Jamie Wilkinson says he and his deputy chief will be doing the cooking themselves, and that it should be a fun evening. The open house and the food are free.

For Emergency Preparedness Week, the advice Jamie gives to the public is to have a 72-hour kit ready.

A kit should have enough food, water and other sup-

plies for a family should they become isolated at home for 72 hours, which could happen with heavy wind or electricity failure.

Preparing for 72 hours is the general theme for this year’s Emergency Preparedness Week, says Pat Neumann, deputy chief of Pincher Creek Emergency Services.

“As we live in an area that has frequent heavy rainfall this time of year, our agency also reminds people to be prepared for high water and possible high stream flows, along with overland flooding,” he says.

Looking back at the past 20 years, it can be said the area frequently experiences high water levels.

McHappy Day sales make a local difference This Wednesday, May 6, is McHappy Day, and more than 1,400 McDonald’s restaurants across the country — including the one in Pincher Creek — are raising money to support children’s charities such as Ronald McDonald House.

“At McDonald’s, we have always been committed to giving back to the communities we serve,” says Dan Brown, the local franchise owner. “On McHappy Day, we bring together our employees, our customers, our suppliers and our friends in support of local charities dedicated to improving the lives of children in communities across Canada.”

On McHappy Day, $1 from the sale of every Big Mac, Happy Meal and hot McCafé beverage will benefit Ronald McDonald House Charities and a local charity. In addition, many restaurants held fundraising events leading up to McHappy Day. Our local charity, Windy Slopes Health Foundation, will receive 80 per cent of the funds raised on McHappy Day. In keeping with the theme of helping children and families, the foundation will use the proceeds to help enhance the labour delivery suites at Pincher Creek Health Centre.

As part of the day’s celebrations, McDonald’s franchisees and employees will be joined by a variety of special guests, sports and media personalities, politicians and professional entertainers as they greet customers and help raise money for children in cities and towns across the country.

Get your kicks at soccer camp

By Brad Quarin Youth can get their kicks at the Challenger Sports Soccer Camp, returning to Isabelle Sellon Field in Blairmore this summer.

Registration is underway now, and signing up before May 15 gets you a free jersey.

The camp teaches soccer skills to youth from three to 16 and is taught by British instructors, who call the game football.

Families are needed to host three or four coaches, says Tracey Linderman, the municipality’s community services programmer.

Crowsnest Pass was one of the first communities in Alberta to host the camp. In its five years here it’s been very popular, averaging 20 children each time, she says. Both new and returning players are welcome.

Youth have fun with the camp and the instructors are personable.

This year, the camp will run from June 29 to July 3. The curriculum consists of foot skills, technical drills, tactical practices, freestyle soccer, small-sided games, coached scrimmages and a mini tournament.

Spiritual Gleanings by Joyce Sasse

An honourable woman Which ancient biblical sage was it who paid tribute to the virtues of a woman, more than 3,000 years ago, in Proverbs 31:10-31?

The woman who received his praise was a hard-working farm woman whose husband, in lieu of paying taxes, was away working for the king, possibly as a labourer or a soldier.

As the story unfolds, we hear about one who is industrious, creative and good at business. She not only changed raw wool and flax into cloth, but also knew how to care for the vineyards and plant the fields. She knew how to bring help into her household when she couldn’t manage alone, and offered help to others who were in need.

She had special skills in cultivating trade with the merchants. They respected her business acumen and were glad to purchase her commodities.

Above all, this woman of distinction was a God-respecting person who made sure that others in her household knew and observed the statutes and practices of the faithful.

The public acknowledged her wisdom and fairness and enjoyed

dealing with her.

No wonder the scribe tells us that “her value is higher than corals.”

Her husband and children publically declared: “Many daughters have done valiantly, but you have surpassed them all. Charm is a lie, and beauty a vapour. The God-fearing woman is the one who should be praised. Celebrate her for the fruit of her hands; and let her works praise her in her gates.”

(Ellen Davis has translated and helped us understand this passage of Proverbs in her book Scripture, Culture and Agriculture.)

How better to say it? “Many have done valiantly, but (she) has surpassed them all.”

As we celebrate mothers, may we recognize the convergence that exists between women of biblical times and women of today!
