My Little Corner Numerous studies have concluded that hugs are good for our physical and mental health. Few of us need scientific research to back up the simple fact that hugs make us feel good.

We find comfort in the physical contact, whether we are receiving or giving a hug. It’s a natural response, and one I’ve never stopped to give due consideration to.

I’m a hugger. I hug people when I’m happy and hold them a little tighter and a little longer when I’m sad. It’s always been my nature.

Last week the value of both the giving and the receiving of this small gesture was made more clear to me than ever.

As small-town folk, we understand how tragedy affects an entire community. When tragedy comes upon tragedy it can be overwhelming and devastating. Everyone is connected in some way, and everyone feels the pain.

My hometown area has been reeling the past few weeks with just this situation of one tragic death after another. In all there have been seven unexpected losses of life, including sons, daughters, mothers, fathers, grandchildren, aunts, uncles, brothers and sisters.

The youngest was four and the oldest 44 years old. The circumstances have all been awful, and

As one considered to be a wordsmith, I’ve often felt pressure to say the right thing; to come up with the perfect cocktail of words to make things better.

Last week I learned that at times there simply are no words, and more importantly, that this is OK. This is when a hug is most meaningful.

I gave and accepted many hugs, and each one meant more than any words possibly could.

I learned that I didn’t need to worry about words failing me. The giving and receiving of love and caring through a hug said it all.

Each of us faces challenges and hurdles, and at times, I believe, we feel we can’t do enough for someone who needs us. Give them a hug and accept one when it comes your way — chances are, you’ll feel better.

We all hold the positive energy of a hug within us. It’s ours to share in both good times and bad.

I realize this may seem like a strange thing to be writing about. My goal is simply to remind myself and others that when words fail, there is always backup that might just be even stronger than what we were searching for.

You will never regret sharing a hug.

An impressive record of volunteerism is recognized

By Brad Quarin It was the “second shock” in recent memory for Irene Filafilo when Mayor Blair Painter announced she had been named to the Order of Crowsnest Pass.

Receiving the honour for exceptional commitment to volunteer service came a year after her husband, Donald, passed away.

“I hope my third shock is that I win the big lotto,” she joked in her acceptance speech, to much applause.

Irene was recognized during this year’s National Volunteer Week, along with Rudy Pagnucco and Joe Trotz, for an impressive 55 years of service.

She had received a few phone calls from people encouraging her to go to the volunteer appreciation night, but didn’t sense something was up.

At the event, Irene saw Rudy go up on stage to collect his Order of Crowsnest Pass, and didn’t expect there would be any other recipients. “I was just so happy that Irene Filafilo is one of three he got it,” she says.

Then, the mayor began reading Irene’s story, and she found herself being called on stage for the evening’s second honour. She thinks it’s wonderful to share the distinction with Rudy and Joe. Receiving the Order of Crowsnest Pass was something Irene says she never expected “in a million years.”

“I love people, I like to help, and I never wait for someone to say, ‘Irene, would you do this?’”

“Nobody likes to do books,” she adds, so she often takes that on and doesn’t mind it.

It was 55 years ago that she joined the Order of the Royal Purple, a charitable organization that was tied to the Elks of Canada and had a strong presence in Crowsnest Pass.

She joined because Donald was an Elk, and it seemed like something she would enjoy. “In our younger days, we didn’t have TV,” she says. She believes she was 23 at the time.

With the Royal Purple, Irene did a lot of catering, made and sold pies and visited the ill. She baked a lot for the organization, and enjoys making any baked good.

In recent years, the Royal Purple has kept busy with the Christmas in the Mountains sale and fundraiser.

However, the Royal Purple wasn’t the limit to her service. “I didn’t want to be in just one thing,” she says. “I wanted to be volunteering all over.”

For 25 years, she belonged to the Coleman Catholic Women’s League, served as secretary and helped put on the annual teas.

It was unfortunate to see the CWL go, after some members passed away and others were reluctant to take positions.

The president of the CWL was Jane Ann Reimer, who with Frank Loseth nominated Irene for the Order of Crowsnest Pass.

Then when playing in whist drives, she was asked to temporarily fill in as treasurer for the Coleman Seniors Centre. That temporary term turned into nine years.

On top of all of the organizations Irene has served with, she has put on 54 bridal showers, mainly for family and friends. After doing one, relatives of the bride would ask her to handle theirs.

It was Irene’s job to find hostesses, determine what guests would bring, and decorate the halls. The most recent bridal shower was only a few weeks ago.

Irene considers all of her efforts important, and her greatest joy in volunteering is “working with people and helping where needed.”

Jane Ann is also impressed with the totality of Irene’s efforts, and was motivated to make the nomination by Irene’s many years of service while still having time for family. Irene is a mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

This was Jane Ann’s first time making a nomination, and she was thrilled to see it succeed.

As for the future, Irene doesn’t intend to stop volunteering, believing that if she quit, all of her activities would end.

Students learn lessons in empowerment

By Brad Quarin A new pilot project tested by Matthew Halton High School aims to improve the self-esteem, leadership and social skills of students, to help create brighter futures for them.

MHHS sent 13 students to the Empowering Minds camp, held at Gladstone Mountain Ranch in April. Expectations for a laid-back experience proved wrong, with a gruelling, intense program that the teens nevertheless found worthwhile.

“It was transformational … at taking our leadership skills to the next level, pushing ourselves out of our comfort zones and knowing our potential,” says one student, Caelan Taylor.

Principal Sandy McDuffe says the school tried out the program at little cost, to get an idea of what it could offer students. Four students from F.P. Walshe High School in Fort Macleod also went.

Empowering Minds is a non-profit organization based in Calgary.

Around 5,000 students have graduated from the program, but all from urban settings, says John Taylor, off-campus co-ordinator for Livingstone Range School Division. The program is new to rural communities.

The program could fit into Matthew Halton High School’s three-year plan, which promotes coaching, mentorship and leadership, Sandy says.

John and Sandy had some idea of what the program was, but discovered there was more to it than expected.

Empowering Minds is intended for “all students, with caution,” Sandy says. The course is difficult, so some students with high anxieties may not handle it well.

They thought Grade 10 student Austin Ford would benefit from the program, to help him overcome his troubles with being in public areas.

Grade 11 student Michael Big Bull says staff saw “a change” in him, so he was recommended to go.

Christopher Dupuis, a Grade 12 student, wanted to improve his leadership and public speaking skills.

The students went in not knowing what to expect, “blindfolded,” at one point literally, Michael says.

What they got was a two-day course with

a series of modules, consisting of a mix of activities and paperwork. Much of it involved working as a team. The facilitators would not call the students a team until they functioned as one, a moment which came on the last night.

One activity was a trust fall from a ladder, and the students also went through an obstacle course blindfolded and guided by other students, Austin says.

At one point, the teens passed along tennis balls in circles, as fast as they could to break a time record, Christopher says. The activity taught teamwork, problem-solving and communication.

Caelan adds they had to speak with confidence about subjects they were given with little notice.

The days were long and exhausting. During

the camp, they slept in sleeping bags in a hotel, and found the view at Gladstone Mountain Ranch beautiful.

The teens emerged from the experience with new perspectives.

Michael says he learned to treat his friends with more respect and to trust others more.

Previously, he was more quiet.

Grade 10 student Sadie Bannick, who is a leader in Crowsnest Pass cadets, says she was “closed off ” previously, but overcame fears of society. This will help her become a better leader in cadets. Austin also says his social anxiety has lowered.

Christopher says he adjusted to approach things with an open mind, focusing less on negative things. He believes being able to speak with confidence will help in all aspects of life.

Celebrating survivors is an important aspect of both Relay for Life and Ovarian Cancer Walk of Hope. This year the two fundraisers are joining forces and hope to have an even larger impact on the community.

Join the battle against cancer

By Valerie Fraser Challenge your family, friends and community to make the greatest impact in the fight against cancer by participating in this year’s Canadian Cancer Society Relay for Life in Pincher Creek.

Every step you take will raise money for groundbreaking research and caring support programs for people living with cancer.

Last year, Pincher Creek hosted its inaugural Relay for Life and raised almost $40,000 for the life-saving work of the Canadian Cancer Society.

“We thought we would be lucky to raise $20,000,” BJ Scott, a local relay volunteer, says with a laugh.

BJ was motivated to help organize the event because she feels blessed to have survived cancer.

She says the treatment she received at both the Pincher Creek hospital and the Jack Ady Cancer Centre in Lethbridge was outstanding.

“We have to continue to fund research and programs that allow the Canadian Cancer Society to continue the fight,” BJ says. “Had I been diagnosed 20 or 30 years ago, I may not have survived, as the treatment I received had only been in use for six months. To me, that shows the value of research.”

In September, Pincher Creek will again host Relay for Life, thanks to the dedicated volunteer efforts of BJ, Karen Andrew, Anne Dyck, Maggie Olson, Rosaleen Berger and Joanie Freeman.

This year the relay committee has joined forces with the Ovarian Cancer Walk committee to create one meaningful and successful cancer fundraiser. BJ says they are delighted to welcome

Marlene Bourque, Leslie Claringbull and Danielle Tetachuk to their committee.

The fundraising goal this year is $35,000 and the organizers are confident that the community will rally for the cause.

Scott Paterson of the Canadian Cancer Society encourages everyone to attend the relay and enjoy “a fun day that will ensure people living with cancer in our community have access to caring support programs and the best possible treatments.”

Money raised through Relay for Life makes it possible for the society to lead cancer research across the country, empower Canadians living with cancer, influence public policy, and rally Canadians to change cancer forever.

Together we have made tremendous progress in the fight for life. Today, more than 60 per cent of Canadians with cancer survive the disease, compared to just 25 per cent in the 1940s. But the society will not back down from the fight until every Canadian survives cancer — and it’s your support that will make this possible.

By Brad Quarin The Beaver Mines Community Association and the Municipal District of Pincher Creek will be cleaning up the hamlet of Beaver Mines this spring.

The annual park and gazebo cleanup takes place at 10 a.m. on May 23.

The community association was started to take care of the hamlet and holds the cleanup in partnership with the MD, says secretary Barbara Ann Hession.

The park is behind the Beaver Mines General Store and boasts a gazebo, tennis court and trail system.

While the community is made up of only 100 people, many have children or visiting grandchildren, and the park is used every weekend, Barbara Ann says. The park has a swing set and jungle gym.

The annual cleanup rallies 10 to 30 people, with the whole community aware of the need. Last year, Hilah Simmons also spent four or five hours mending the tennis court nets.

Work to be done this year includes weeding, trimming trees and raking. A volunteer should bring gloves and yard tools.

There will be lunch to go along with the efforts, chili being traditional.

In past years, tree debris picked up at the park cleanup has been taken by the MD on its annual spring cleanup, next happening May 26.

This event gives residents of Beaver Mines a chance to get rid of garbage and large items by putting it on the curb or in the MD dumpster on Second Avenue.

Coleman seniors need casino volunteers

By Brad Quarin The Coleman Seniors Centre is reaching out for volunteers to work at Casino Lethbridge on May 28 and 29.

The casino makes a lot of money for the centre, to support its maintenance. The casino comes only every three years, and typically makes $30,000 or more, says Frank Loseth, president of the Coleman Seniors Centre.

A volunteer must be 18 and will work one shift of eight or nine hours on one of the two days. The volunteer must also abstain from gambling, alcohol and drugs during his or her shift.

Beyond this, there are no requirements, and training is provided at the casino.

Jobs needing to be filled include manager, assistant manager, cashier and chip runner. The chip runner may be the easiest job, Frank says.

Meals, hotel and travel expenses of volunteers will be covered, as a volunteer may submit a receipt for gas.

Chamber welcomes Chinese students with unique local gift Pincher Creek and District Chamber of Commerce surprised the six Chinese Grade 5-6 students at Canyon School last week by presenting each with a Let the Wind Take You to Pincher Creek painting T-shirt from its Wind Fun & More Store.

The chamber thought it would be a fun craft as well as a nice souvenir for them to take back to China on June 18. Their Chinese teacher, Gloria, gave them the opportunity to paint their T-shirts in one of her classes.

They did a great job —the results are amazing!

These six 11-year-old Chinese students, as well as their teacher, arrived in Pincher Creek on March 18 for a homestay program hosted by Canyon School. The two main purposes of their three-month stay are to improve their knowledge of the English language and to absorb as much of our Canadian culture as possible while here.

The chamber wishes the students and their teacher a wonderful continuation of their stay in our beautiful community. We hope they will go home with a memory bag filled with all their new Canadian experiences, as well as tons of new English words, so they will remember Pincher Creek for a long time to come.

Dr. Rino Bosetti, longtime educator and influential visionary for public education in Alberta, passed away peacefully in Blairmore on May 6, 2015.

Our family lost our beloved husband, father and grandfather. We celebrate his life and contributions, and live in gratitude for his love and presence.

Born and raised in Blairmore, he was the son of Italian immigrants, Alfredo and Claudina Bosetti, and brother to Italo. He married the love of his life, Anne Watson, on Sept. 20, 1954, and was father to Dr. Shelley (Terry Piché) Bosetti Piché of White Rock, and Dr. Lynn (Bruce Nesbitt) Bosetti of Kelowna; and grandfather to Harrison Nesbitt of New York, Philippa Nesbitt of Paris, Dr. Matthew Piché of Adelaide and Gillian Piché of Calgary.

Rino began his working life with Western Canadian Collieries as a plant operator before attending the University of Alberta, where he received his B.Ed., M.Ed. and PhD. He served the education community in numerous capacities: high school teacher, superintendent and high school inspector.

In 1970, he joined Alberta Advanced Education as director of planning and research, eventually became assistant deputy minister. He then served as deputy minister of Alberta Education from 1982 to 1995, leading a comprehensive overhaul of the public education system in the province.

Upon retirement, he and Anne moved back to the Crowsnest Pass to live on the family ranch.

He will be remembered most as a man of integrity with a genuine interest in providing the best education for students in Alberta. His sense of humour, his intellect and his kindness will be dearly missed.

A private family service was held at Fantin’s Funeral Chapel in Blairmore, with Rev. Nicky Keyworth officiating. Condolences may be registered at www.fantinsfuneralchapel.ca.

Put on your dancing shoes for Crowsnest Pass elementary schools

By Brad Quarin The little guys and gals of Horace Allen School and Isabelle Sellon School will dance their way through a joint fundraiser for both Crowsnest Pass schools.

The children will gather at ISS on Thursday afternoon for a dance-a-thon, followed by a family dance that evening.

The fundraiser is being held by the parent council at HAS and the advisory council of ISS. Since the councils are made up largely of parents with children in both schools, they thought they would hold one big fundraiser, says Jenny Wilmot, who’s co-ordinating with Jolie Anctil.

The dance-a-thon was inspired by how dance is now part of the phys-ed curriculum at both schools. The children have been taught line dancing and hip hop, Jenny says.

The students then set out to obtain sponsorships from their neighbours.

Organizers brainstormed a way to get all classes excited, and decided that the class that raises the most money will get a pizza party and a second, unusual prize.

The second prize will be to see their teacher pie ISS principal Paul Pichurski or HAS assistant principal Myrna Dembicki in the face.

The family dance at ISS runs from 6 to 8 p.m. and is open to anyone from the schools, grandparents and home-schooled children.

Students can also go with crazy hair, for a chance to win some prizes.

Money raised will go to art programs for kindergarteners and art supplies for all classes at HAS, along with the breakfast program and busing for field trips.

At ISS, the money will also support field trips and bringing in special groups to visit, such as Trickster Theatre, Jenny says. Trickster hasn’t visited ISS in years.

On the Menu: A review of Bamboo Bistro

By N. Carraway When Bamboo Bistro burst onto the scene, Crowsnest Pass residents were eager for a restaurant that went beyond conventional dining fare.

With a pedigree from Fernie’s Curry Bowl, the chef brought with him the subtle flavours of the East and his success has provided a welcome alternative for diners.

Now in its fifth year, Bamboo Bistro’s current location has increased seating capacity and is adjacent to the owners’ other restaurant, Black Rock Pizza. The large room is finished in soothing earth tones and Asian-influenced prints. High ceilings add to the spaciousness of the room, which can seem somewhat cold when not full of patrons.

Featuring a selection of Thai, Japanese and Indian dishes, Bamboo Bistro has a good selection of items including several vegetarian and gluten-free choices.

The owner who served us is an affable fellow who was happy to chat with us and did his best to make our dining experience pleasurable.

We started with summer rolls, filled with shrimp, cucumber, bean sprouts, carrots and fresh mint, wrapped in a thin rice-paper roll. You get only two to an order but they were some of the largest summer rolls I’ve seen and, since there were four of us, they were easily cut in half and shared.

With a sweet chili sauce for dipping, they were a cool antidote to the second appetizer, fire prawns — a mouthful of spicy tiger prawns served with a delicious mango salsa. The menu shows two peppers for this dish, which I thought was just about right.

Over the years, my wife and I have grown accustomed to spicy heat, but for many, the two-pepper level might be a bit too hot for their liking.

For the main course, I decided to go with the special — a creamy peanut curry simmered with shrimp, snap peas, red peppers and broccoli.

Served with a bowl of rice, the dish was delicately executed, with the peanuts balancing the power of the curry.

My wife, whose heat tolerance is a thing to behold, ordered the Thai red curry and asked the chef to take it up a notch — and take it up he did!

The curry was made with a ghost chili, one of the world’s hottest chilies. Well prepared and wonderfully infused with a complexity of flavours, she declared it very hot and said she couldn’t imagine more than one pepper.

Our friends had the pad Thai with chicken, a classic dish seasoned with a light sauce over thick rice noodles, and the coconut lime curry, a creamy-textured dish with fresh basil.

Both dishes were very flavourful, they said, and they were quite pleased with their meals.

The service was prompt and friendly, and the servings were large and reasonably priced. Main courses ran around $16 to $17.

For dessert, the four of us shared a very large date square and a delicious blueberry turnover.

Crowsnest Pass is lucky to have Bamboo Bistro and its choice of fresh Asian dishes. I know we’ll certainly be back — there’s a whole sushi menu we haven’t even cracked!

Reporting to the CEO, the Manager Sustainable Development is expected to: • Manage Riversdale’s environmental sustainability portfolio, which includes monitoring and remediation activities and strategies in Canada.

• Manage and develop key relationships with stakeholders including; First Nations, local community members and groups, and the applicable departments of local, provincial and Federal Governments.

• Develop and implement appropriate First Nations and community engagement programs with which to ensure a cooperative and mutually beneficial outcome for these key stakeholders.

• Manage the compilation and dissemination of third party Environmental and First Nations studies.

• Implement a strategic planning process to ensure adherence to the objectives of our Grassy Mountain Environmental and Social Impact Studies upon commissioning of the mine.

• Work closely with the Riversdale CEO (North America), VP Technical Services and Finance team to ensure timely and accurate cost reporting and budgets for the Riversdale Projects.

• Assist the CEO on business development initiatives including the development of a regional strategy in Southern Alberta.
