This year, for the first time ever, I forgot my own birthday. Apparently I was so preoccupied with other things that it didn’t even cross my mind!

Sonya Bratz came into my office at the end of the day Thursday with a card and good wishes for my special day.

She no doubt stifled a giggle as I looked at her with a blank face. “Isn’t tomorrow your birthday?” she asked.

Well imagine that, it was.

I had forgotten again by the time the next morning came around.

After my parents phoned to sing a rousing version of Happy Birthday, I realized I’m actually a year younger than I thought I was. That’s a pretty great gift!

Facebook always remembers birthdays. It was a little overwhelming to log on late in the day and see that over 100 people had sent greetings online.

A spinoff from this public announcement, of the big day I had forgotten, was to have greetings shouted out when I popped in at the Legion after work. I felt like Norm from the TV show Cheers!

I started thinking of birthdays gone by and realized there had been two snowy birthdays I could recall, one spent in hospital and many spent with family and friends.

Almost all were happy days, and a few have been particularly memorable.

For my 10th birthday, I received a new-to-me purple banana bike. It wasn’t the prettiest thing, and had been well loved by at least one owner previous to me, but I was thrilled. I took off alone for my inaugural spin and at an

intersection, was hit by a turning car. The woman with the flaming red hair hadn’t seen me, and was completely distraught. I was pretty calm. After inspecting my skinned knees and elbows I insisted that I was fine and could get myself the three blocks home.

We were living in Prince Albert, a Saskatchewan city of about 30,000 people at the time. It amazes me now, after spending the majority of my years living in small towns, that word never made it three blocks to my parents’ ears.

Because I was afraid of losing my bike privileges, I fabricated a story of wiping out in the alley. The story was never challenged, and not refuted until an “I bet you didn’t know ...” conversation 12 years later.

My 19th birthday also fell on the Friday of the May long weekend a few years ago. I was finally old enough to go to the bar in Saskatchewan. After work we went off to a lounge called Tofino Beach. I believe it was Monday before the party was over after some memorable moments.

It’s also a time when I think of days at the lake and dares issued to go for a swim regardless of how cold it was.

My favourite birthday gift arrived a little late – three weeks past due, to be exact. On my 29th birthday I expected a child. Jaiden didn’t make her appearance until June, but was absolutely worth the wait.

It was wonderful to have her greet me in the living room on Friday morning with a hug on the birthday I had forgotten.

Thanks to all for the good wishes. They made my day brighter and put a smile on my face.

Ed Gregor Memorial Stewardship Day is a major annual occasion on which Joe fixes trails and builds bridges. Joe knew Ed Gregor, but is involved in the event mainly for “what it stood for.” The day aims to keep forests as a viable place for recreation.

Joe also achieved a measure of celebrity outside Crowsnest Pass as a sidekick to Terry Grant on the reality TV show Mantracker.

Mantracker is about tracking people in the wilderness. Sacha Anderson suggested bringing the show to Crowsnest Pass, and thought Joe would be an ideal sidekick because of his knowledge of the area and his horses.

He found it a fun experience. “Things are pretty slow when you’re tracking, but once you do the chase, the adrenaline’s there,” he says.

They had some great “prey,” including two members of the air force who ran for 12 kilometres. Joe compares this to chasing a runner in Sinister 7.

Joe’s knowledge came in handy, as he knows the trails and where the shortcuts are. The experience lasted days. Joe watched Mantracker a few times before appearing on it.

The Order of Crowsnest Pass came as a surprise and an honour, as many people volunteer and deserve recognition. In fact, he shared the honour this year with Rudy Pagnucco and Irene Filafilo, who Joe says are also deserving.

Sacha, who knows Joe through the rodeo association and Crow Snow Riders, considers him very deserving of the Order of Crowsnest Pass. She describes him as one who gives a lot to the community doesn’t ask for much in return.

A Night at the Movies for MHHS grads

“It is a very satisfying feeling to finally be done my high school education,” says one grad, Christopher Dupuis.

“It’s almost surreal,” says Janet Taylor, who is acting as grad president. She feels too young to be graduating.

There are about 40 grads who will celebrate on Saturday, says teacher Randy Whitehead. A cap and gown ceremony at the school at 10 a.m. will be followed by a banquet at the hall from 4:30 to 6 p.m.

The spring celebration is at 6:30 to 8:30.

This year’s valedictorian is Pete Manners.

The guest speaker will be Duane Petluk, who taught the grads drama in Grade 7, in a playful but mature way, Janet says. In Grade 8 they had him for

“We loved his teaching style,” Janet says.

Grad Kate Nicas calls him “very upbeat and inspirational.”

Duane had said he would be at their grad even if just as a guest, so Janet says they made him guest speaker, although he now teaches in Fort Macleod.

This year’s grads are a “pretty easygoing group,” Randy says.

“We have grown into a family,” Janet says.

Kate says that while the group is diverse, with some academic and some athletic, many have their own “little things” that bring them together.

After high school, Janet will go to Lethbridge College to study agriculture. Christopher will go to the University of Lethbridge to study management, which he hopes will lead to a career in politics. Kate will take geology at Mount Royal University, while the others will either study, travel or work.

Kayakers chase an amazing adventure in Brazil

The world-class strength of the local Pinch o’ Crow Creekers kayak club was demonstrated again, as three members competed in the kayaking world championships held in Brazil in April.

Ryley Penner and Hannah Penner from Lundbreck and Adrian Cole from Blairmore are back from the competition. A fourth member, Cole Gerber from Pincher Creek, qualified to go but couldn’t make the trip.

“Brazil was amazing,” Adrian says. “It was a good adventure.”

This was the first time in Brazil for all three athletes. The scenery made an impression on them, particularly the Iguaçu Falls, which were selected as one of the seven wonders of nature by the New7Wonders Foundation.

“That was by far the coolest thing we saw on the trip,” Hannah says.

Adrian describes the falls as “absolutely breathtaking,” and explains they were made up of 170 individual waterfalls, but looked like one. The falls were over 200 feet high.

They also saw a bird park, and another favourite sight on the trip for Hannah was the course itself. It had a fast current and “friendly waves” — not dangerous, but challenging.

Being a developing country, Brazil had a different

look in its streets and shops, she says. The shops sold homemade items.

Adrian says the Canadian kayakers met plenty of Brazilian people who showed incredible hospitality.

Brazilian paddlers invited the Pinch o’ Crow Creekers to their homes for barbecues, which Ryley says had steaks and beef that were cheap, but just as good as at home.

The Brazilians were also nice enough to show Ryley their physiotherapy method. He injured his back a few months ago and had another minor injury in Brazil, but was soon back in good condition.

While the three were new to Brazil, they were no strangers to the kayaking world championships.

Hannah previously travelled to Australia. In Brazil, she competed in junior women’s kayaking.

Adrian has competed in the world championships several times, with this being his last year on the under-23 team in single men’s kayaking.

This was the first time on the U23 team in single men’s kayaking for Ryley, who had previously gone to the world championships three times.

Cole Gerber qualified in junior C1, or single men’s canoe.

Team Canada has only three people in each of those categories, so for one small club to have four members qualify is a huge accomplishment. The victory of the four kayakers at the national competi-

tion in Madawaska, Ont., ranked the club among the foremost in Canada in terms of qualifying members.

For his first time in U23, Ryley felt he had a fairly good result, placing 29th of 62 competitors and making the semifinals. The coolest moment came when he was kayaking in the bottom pool and saw an alligator, though at 20 feet away, Ryley was in no danger.

However, Adrian and Hannah say their races weren’t as good as they had hoped, with Adrian placing around 43rd and Hannah 31st. Still, Hannah says the kayaking was her favourite part of the trip.

“It was a learning experience,” she says.

From here, Ryley feels he’s in a good position for competing in U23 over the next four years.

Adrian will move into the open category and will be eligible for the senior national team. He will be training and pushing himself to get there.

If Hannah gets onto the junior women’s team next year, she may go to the world championships in Poland.

The three kayakers thank their team of coaches from around Canada and their chaperone from Fernie. “We had a great staff of coaches,” says Adrian, who found them accommodating and focused.

Hannah also thanks her family for most of her support, along with her training partners and her sponsor, Prairie Automotive Sales in Fort Macleod.

Business loans will help owners brighten the area

By Brad Quarin Businesses and business owners are getting assistance in an effort to spruce up the area.

Community Futures in Crowsnest Pass and the Town of Pincher Creek are introducing Business Improvement Loans, with interest paid for by the local governments.

The loans for up to $10,000 are available to businesses with storefronts throughout Crowsnest Pass, says Crowsnest Pass Community Futures business analyst Larry Saloff.

The idea is to help repaint buildings and replace broken windows. Loans can also be obtained for exterior lighting, interior painting and flooring, new signs and new entryway features.

Kirk Clements, business analyst for Pincher Creek Community Futures, adds that the loans can be used for fixing broken doors and installing awnings and signs. The loans are available to businesses in the town, as well as Glenwood and Cardston.

It’s in the municipality’s interest that the community looks good, Larry says. Kirk explains that making the town look more attractive helps with tourism.

So, the Municipality of Crowsnest Pass is supplying grants to cover interest for up to five years, and the Town of Pincher Creek for up to three years.

Crowsnest Pass Community Futures was started more than 20 years ago with a federal grant, and operates as an independent, nonprofit organization to help small businesses and economic development.

Previous achievements of Crowsnest Pass Community Futures include securing funding to develop a 120-kilometre bike trail system.

Pincher Creek Community Futures receives its funding from Western Economic Diversification Canada.

Applications for the Business Improvement Loans are available at the Community Futures room in the Provincial Building in Blairmore and at 659 Main St. in Pincher Creek.

Spring Challenge results

Two Passtrak athletes represented their club on May 9 and 10 at the Calgary Spring Challenge track meet. They completed a total of 12 events and produced five lifetime-best performances. Along the way, they set four new Passtrak club records and picked up one third-place and two second-place finishes.

Liam Grier was in the bantam boys group, which are the 12- and 13-year-old athletes. He had nine events in total, six of which he had competed in previously.

He improved in five of those six events and set one new Passtrak club record as well.

Liam’s long jump improved by 15 centimetres, out to 3.8 metres for 11th place.

He increased his distance in the discus by a whopping 5.3 metres, out to 19.89 metres to finish fifth. Liam slashed eight seconds off his previous best time in the 800 metres by finishing in two minutes 46.24 seconds.

His high jump improved to 1.25 metres for a ninth-place finish, and his monster toss of 7.04 metres in the shot put added more than two metres to his previous best to earn him eighth place. The Passtrak club record Liam set for his age group was in the 1,200-metre race, where his time was 4:32.63.

Bob Grier ran three very successful races in the masters group, for ages 50 to 54. In the 100 metres, he crossed the line in 14.78 seconds for third place, which set a new Passtrak club record for his age group. In the 800 metres, he ran 2:32.55, which was good enough for second place and another new Passtrak club record.

His third race was the 1,500 metres, where he recorded a time of 5:31.56 for another second-place finish and yet another Passtrak club record for his age group.

Lyndon Penner to visit Hillcrest

By Brad Quarin It’s hard to garden in Crowsnest Pass, given a short growing season, hungry deer and challenging winds.

To help locals overcome the challenge, SpringBreak Flower Farm is inviting gardening expert and CBC columnist Lyndon Penner to lead a discussion on how to grow here. He will be at the greenhouse on May 30 at 3 p.m.

It will be a pleasure to welcome Lyndon to the Hillcrest greenhouse, as he is a knowledgeable and engaging teacher.

“It’s good for the greenhouse if people are inspired to garden,” says Val Breakenridge, owner of SpringBreak Flower Farm.

Lyndon’s visit comes at the request of SpringBreak customers, and Val says the discussion is a show of customer appreciation, free to attend. SpringBreak is covering his travel expenses.

While customers wanted Lyndon, Val was also familiar with him and is excited to meet him. Fans believe that if he weren’t a gardener, Lyndon could be a stand-up comedian.

Although he is a horticulturalist based in Calgary, he will be in a good position to talk about Crowsnest Pass gardening because of his love for the area, Val says. He travels to the area and spends a lot of time in Waterton.

Lyndon says he hasn’t spent much time in Crowsnest Pass, apart from driving through it and a hike in the fall years ago, which he found “gorgeous.”

He may go on another hike during this visit to find wildflowers and “quiet places.”

Dramatic demonstration planned for EMS Week

By Brad Quarin A car will crash on the Pincher Creek EMS station parking lot on Thursday. The crash will be simulated by EMS and a local drama class during celebrations of National EMS Week, an occasion to celebrate emergency services in Canada. It will also be observed in Crowsnest Pass.

The purpose of the simulated crash will be to show what EMS does in such a situation, removing patients from the car and treating them. The patients will be portrayed by real people with simulated injuries, says Pat Neumann, deputy chief of Pincher Creek EMS. The occasion will also have a free barbecue, with the event starting at 6 p.m. People are always welcome to stop by and ask questions, Pat says.

Pincher Creek has observed National EMS Week in the past, having blood pressure clinics in some years.

In Crowsnest Pass, there will be cake and a display related to EMS outside of the hospital in Blairmore, from 2 to 4 p.m. on May 28. There will also be an ambulance there that people can explore, says Rick Yanco, supervisor of operations of EMS in southern Alberta. Visitors should be able to learn plenty about emergency services from the ambulance.

Forest stewardship day set for June 6 The 21st anniversary of the Ed Gregor Memorial Stewardship Day, where we take care of our special lands here in the Crowsnest, will be marked June 6.

This is the longest-standing volunteer stewardship day in Canada. It was created in conjunction with Alberta Sustainable Resource Development when the Crowsnest Forest Stewardship Society was formed.

On this day, all users, all groups and all clubs come together to help maintain the land that they get to recreate and live in by doing a number of projects to keep the Crowsnest Forest healthy, sustainable and looking beautiful. It is also a great opportunity for all, including our youth, to develop an appreciation and respect for this special place.

There is a tremendous amount of effort put into the organization and co-ordination of this event, which to date has produced these results: — Over 1.5 million in donated volunteer hours, donated equipment and supplies by over 3,500 volunteers. This includes trail maintenance, reclamation and repair, walkways, benches, signs and kiosks, random campsite and backcountry cleanup, and other upgrades.

— Thousands of kilometres of roadsides and forestry trails have been cleaned up, with over 42 tonnes of garbage collected. Every year there is a noticeable improvement in the areas, with less garbage to find.

— About 8,000 tree seedlings have been planted in the C5 forest.

— Many trails have benefited from our society’s volunteer work, including Allison-Chinook Lake, Beaver Mines Lake, Syncline cross-country trails, Table Mountain, Old Miner’s Path, Star Creek, and many off-highway vehicle, hiking and horseback winter and summer trails in the Crowsnest Forest.

— Numerous bridges have been installed by volunteers, particularly the Crowsnest Pass Quad Squad and Crow Snow Riders on many trails so that riders can stay out of the rivers and creeks, protecting riparian health and keeping these trails sustainable into the future.

The CFSS has worked closely with all local government agencies, all user groups and many other volunteer organizations to develop this day into a huge asset in keeping this area beautiful. Please consider attending this year’s Stewardship Day on June 6.

The day begins with a gathering of volunteers in the morning at the Blairmore (downtown Crowsnest Pass) ranger station, where everyone gets a hearty, free breakfast, starting at 7:30. Afterwards, people divide into groups and disperse to a number of locations for a variety of activities.

Some of the projects planned for this year’s Stewardship Day are: trail work at Chinook Lake, Scouts Canada’s Scoutrees southern Alberta tree planting, United Riders of Crowsnest mountain-bike trail signage, Table Mountain trail work, Beaver Mines Lake interpretive trails, Crowsnest-Allison cross-country skiing trails repair and cleanup, Community Walking Trail and Old Frank Road cleanup, north and south snowmobile shelter cleanup, and general forest cleanup, including random camping areas.

Other projects will be announced as the day gets closer.

Organizations participating this year include Crowsnest Pass Cross-Country Ski Association, Crowsnest Pass Quad Squad, Crow Snow Riders, Southern Alberta Coulee Kruzers, Hillcrest Fish and Game Society, United Riders of Crowsnest, 1st Crowsnest Scouts, 37th Lethbridge Scouts, to mention only a few. Many other individuals, through their ongoing support, have also made this event a great success.

Projects are a great opportunity for groups, families and all ages, including very young, to participate. It is a great event to meet others who truly care about the Crowsnest Forest.

After working on the projects, to finish off the day, everyone returns to the ranger station to enjoy a hot supper and check their draw tickets. There will also be tons of other prizes given out to participants.

The hard-working volunteer executive of CFSS invites everyone who lives or recreates in the C5 forest to come out and show the pride and caring you have for these lands that belong to us all. It seems like the eyes of the world are on this corner of the province, so now is the time to show that you really care for the gift of our public lands.
