My Little Corner Our pages have been filled this month with the smiling faces of graduating students from our area.

Next week’s issue will celebrate the last group.

At times, high school seems a distant memory, while at other times, little snippets are as fresh as if they happened only yesterday. Occasionally I still dream about forgetting my locker combination, and that is not a good dream.

This summer my class is considering a “29 and holding” reunion. It’s hard to believe it’s been that long!

I remember graduation as a time of excitement, a time when we felt we knew it all and had the world at our fingertips.

Academic demands are considerably different now, and expectations placed on our young people are high. The prospect of graduation seems to generate as much stress as excitement.

It was a wonderful moment of parenthood to watch the Matthew Halton grads enter the school gym, one by one, to take their place in front of a large crowd on Saturday morning. They all looked beautiful and each one shone with the glow of their personal achievement.

A few short weeks from now they are expected to transition seamlessly from teens to adults. It’s a lot to ask, but each will find their way.

I wrote the lyrics to this song two nights before my own graduation. In honour of my daughter and

About 25 years ago, my wife and I stayed at a bed and breakfast located on a sheep ranch off Highway 6, about 10 miles west of Pincher Creek.

The owners were an MD and his RN spouse.

Their Victorian house had been moved from Lethbridge because of highway construction.

Although middle aged, they had two precocious children of elementary school age. They were most gracious and we had a marvellous time.

Come for supper and learn about the Lions Cowley Lions recently held their annual pancake breakfast and garage sale, serving almost 200 people and raising over $1,000 for service projects in the Pincher Creek-Lundbreck area.

The motto of all Lions clubs is We Serve, and the pancake breakfast and garage sale is just one of the projects the local club undertakes to carry out this mandate.

Over the past 30 years or so, Cowley Lions Club has donated about $475,000 to local projects and to humanitarian projects around the world.

Cowley Lions invite members of the community to join them for an open house and supper this Thursday at 7 p.m. at Cowley Community Hall. We welcome all community-minded people who are interested in learning more about the work of Lions — throughout the world and in our own backyard — and about how they can get involved.

We encourage anyone interested in making a difference to join us for this special event, including women and families with children. After all, there’s nothing like the feeling of giving back and helping neighbours in need.

Thirty-two men and women belong to Cowley Lions Club. Globally, they are members of Lions Clubs International, the largest service club organization in the world. Its 1.35 million members, in more than 46,000 clubs, are serving communities in over 200 countries and geographical areas around the globe.

Do you know how to use bear spray?

By Brad Quarin The bears are coming out of hibernation and Crowsnest Pass residents may encounter them again.

To make sure people are prepared for a possible encounter, Fish and Wildlife and Crowsnest Pass BearSmart are holding their bear spray course on Saturday.

The course is held every spring and fall and is designed to teach people how to use bear spray, as well as other facts about bears.

This time, there will be more time to practise using bear spray, and more possible scenarios will be considered, says BearSmart co-ordinator Christy Pool.

The course is three hours long, to allow one-on-one training with bear spray.

There will be two sessions, at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., which can each take 20 people.

The sessions will be held at Hillcrest Ball Complex.

Bear awareness taught in the course includes how to identify different species, tracks and food sources, and take appropriate safety precautions.

Fish and Wildlife officer John Clarke will lead the class with furry sidekicks Koda and Kuma, the bear dogs who act like bears. They will give the crowd a good idea of bear behaviour, Christy says.

Kananaskis Pro Rodeo gives back to community

By Brad Quarin It’s truly admirable how the Kananaskis Pro Rodeo doesn’t simply take money from the community, but puts it all back into the community.

The Kananaskis Rodeo Association has had a Tough Enough to Wear Pink Day for years, raising money for breast cancer awareness and research.

Recently, Tough Enough to Wear Pink director Jackie Sudworth presented cheques from the KRA to the Canadian Cancer Society and the Heart and Stroke Foundation.

The KRA was moved to support the Heart and Stroke Foundation this year by the passing of cowboy Hoover Hayes and KRA member Ron McCaskill, Jackie says.

They raised $967 from the 50-50 draw during the Saturday of the rodeo. Heart and Stroke Foundation co-ordinator Trish York says that money will stay in Alberta for research at the University of Calgary and the University of Alberta. The foundation wasn’t aware the KRA would make the donation, so it came as “a wonderful surprise,” Trish says.

Tough Enough to Wear Pink Day, held on the Sunday of the rodeo, brought in $985 through another 50-50 and the sale of bracelets, bandanas and keychains.

Seniors can enjoy many activities next week

By Brad Quarin Few would dispute seniors are an integral part of the Crowsnest Pass and Pincher Creek area, so Seniors’ Week, observed across Alberta, will be meaningful here.

Seniors’ Week is an occasion to show appreciation for seniors for supporting family members, contributing to charities and volunteering. It runs from Monday, June 1, until Sunday, June 7.

In Crowsnest Pass, there will be something happening on nearly every day of the week, starting with a luncheon on Monday at the Coleman Seniors Centre.

The luncheon comes courtesy of Family and Community Support Services, which also co-ordinated the Crowsnest Pass events so there would be no schedule conflict, says programmer Kim Lewis.

The luncheon runs from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and is free, but seniors should still call Kim at 403-563-2207 by Thursday to let her know they are going.

The luncheon celebrates seniors and allows them to socialize, and Crowsnest Museum will be bringing historic photos to look through.

On Tuesday, a seniors tea will be held at Isabelle Sellon School in Blairmore at 1:30 p.m. It is free and seniors should call Amber at 403-5628815 to confirm their attendance.

On June 3, the Bellecrest Seniors Centre is holding a whist tournament at 1:30 p.m., which is free and comes with lunch. Call Marge Houda at 403564-4920 to register.

This will be followed on June 4 by the seniors’ conference, a popular annual event held by Crowsnest Pass Adult Education.

This year, they’re bringing motivational speaker Rosabelle Daugela to come and talk about “Habits of Healthy Seniors.” Rosabelle calls herself a “joy specialist” and was recommended for her colourful, entertaining and relatable stories, says program co-ordinator Joni MacFarlane.

You can still register today for $5, which includes a lunch by Country Encounters, by calling 403-563-8516. The seniors’ conference runs from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at M.D. McEachern Community Centre in Bellevue.

York Creek Lodge is hosting a barbecue and jackpot bingo at noon on June 5. You can register by calling 403-562-2102, extension 4.

Then on June 6, the Hillcrest Miners Club is holding an old-time country jam session, a chance to dance and listen to classic country music. It runs from 3 to 6 p.m.

In Pincher Creek, Vista Village will have a banana split tea on June 4 at 3 p.m., for all of its residents. On June 6, they will go to the chuckwagon supper at the Horseshoe Pavilion.

Crestview Lodge will have its monthly luncheon at noon on June 5, and it will be open to seniors from outside of the lodge. Manager Millie Loeffler says it’s an opportunity for the community’s seniors to have a nice meal and join in on activities, with Crestview having plenty of in-house games. It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Donna Waldner (née Brehmer) on May 14, 2015, in Blairmore. She was 82 years old.

Donna was born in Outlook, Sask., on Christmas Day, 1932, to proud parents Herman and Elsie Brehmer. She grew into a lovely, caring young lady who caught the attention of a handsome gentleman, Donald Waldner. The couple married on Aug. 28, 1954, and went on to be blessed with three beautiful children.

When Rick and Wendy were young, the family moved westward and settled in the Lost Creek area. There, Donna gave birth to their youngest son, Rob, and went on to raise her family in the rugged woods of the logging camp where Donald worked.

Donna loved the outdoors and enjoyed countless hours gardening, hunting, fishing, camping and having picnics where plenty of hotdogs were served. Over the years, she was a clerk in many local stores and bakeries. Her customers appreciated her friendly, welcoming manner, and that she spoke straight from the hip and called a spade a spade. She never shied away from sharing her opinions — usually in a loving fashion.

Above all else, Donna adored her family and she cherished the time spent with them. Her unwavering faith in the Lord gave her incredible strength and allowed her to appreciate all of life’s blessings. She may be gone from our eyes, but she will remain in our hearts forever.

Left to mourn her passing and celebrate her life are her sons, Rick (Rhonda) Waldner and Rob (Lori) Waldner of Hillcrest, Alta.; her son-inlaw, Russell Angus of Barrhead, Alta.; her grandchildren Aron Walsh, Leah (Blaine) Johnson, Lane (Kathe) Waldner, Josh (Heather) Waldner, Les (Aleeza) Harris, Amber (Shane) Gummow, Tyrel (Andrei) Waldner and Nolan Waldner; her great-grandchildren, Donnell Walsh, Katie Walsh, Madison Gummow, Jace Gummow, Kaelyn Waldner, Allison Waldner, Jakob Waldner, Dradin Johnson, Arizona Johnson, Aurora Johnson, Cyr Waldner and Cleo Waldner; her sisters Joyce Klassen and MaryLou Huebert; as well as the many friends she made throughout her life.

She was predeceased by her husband, Donald Waldner; her parents, Herman and Elsie Brehmer; her daughter, Wendy; her grandchildren Chantelle, Kora and Kara; her brothers, Arvin Brehmer and Herman Brehmer; and her sisters Alice June Brehmer, Aileen Willms and Helen Love.

With respect for Donna’s wishes, no funeral service will be held.

She was predeceased by her brother Alex Kinnear (1971); her parents, John Kinnear (2000) and Marie Kinnear (2007); and her niece Stacy Dodds, also in 2007.

Nancy had a devout and unwavering faith, as well as genuine humility, integrity and humour. She gave of herself unsparingly to her many devoted friends, and found the best in others. Nancy gave gifts of the heart: delicious perogies, pies and muffins, wonderful crocheted afghans, and the bounty of her garden. She loved to spend winters camping with Lou in the Arizona desert, where they met and engaged other talented musicians at multiple desert jams.

She was a force for good and a role model for us all. Nancy’s preferred and most effective communication was musical, as anyone who has heard her soaring voice can attest. While Nancy loved sharing her musical talents and jamming with fellow musicians, it was her delight to perch with her guitar in a corner of Popiel’s Restaurant on Saturday nights and enthral diners with her pure vocal selections.

A celebration of her life was held at Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Church in Blairmore on May 23, 2015, with Deacon Renso Castellarin officiating. Nancy was laid to rest in the Passburg Cemetery.

Silver Reins achievement day

By Alina Pharis Silver Reins 4-H Club members invite you to their achievement day, this Saturday at 9 a.m. at the Horseshoe Pavilion in Pincher Creek.

Junior, intermediate and senior members will show their horses in showmanship, western pleasure, English and other classes. Events will take place throughout the day, and everyone is welcome to watch and support the riders as they celebrate their achievements.

The club is looking for new members in the upcoming year. If you’re interested, achievement day is a great opportunity to see what the club is about.

Get to know the visitor centre

By Brad Quarin If you’re curious about what the Crowsnest Pass Visitor Information Centre is and who the staff are behind it, consider going to the meet-and-greet on Thursday.

Visitors can drop in between 5:30 and 7:30 p.m. to meet the staff, enjoy some treats and test their knowledge of the area.

Anyone can go to the event, and business owners may be interested in how the centre can promote their businesses, says travel counsellor Carling Welsh.

Staff will also pose trivia questions that visitors can try to answer using brochures, and names will be drawn for prizes.

The centre can be found eight kilometres west of Coleman on Highway 3.

Richard Davidson

It is with great sadness that the family of Richard Cameron Davidson of Pincher Creek announces his passing.

Rick will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Gloria; his daughter, Shantal (Aaron), and son, Chad (Kathlynn); his parents, Agnes and Cameron; and his brothers, Kevin and Kim (Chris). Rick was blessed with five grandchildren — Tiffany, Viollette, Marley and Gage — as well as many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his granddaughter Liberty.

Rick grew up in Pincher Creek, raising pigeons, hunting, fishing, trapping, and loved being outdoors. After high school he worked to become a millwright and worked with the Shell Waterton gas plant until he retired at 55. The greatest joys in his life were his children and grandchildren, who are missing him dearly and will forever.

A celebration of Rick’s life was held on May 20 at the Royal Canadian Legion in Pincher Creek.

Judith Dyck

Judith Dyck (nee Martens) was born the third daughter of Jacob and Anna Martens in Rosthern, Sask., on May 15, 1922. After the death of her father and the remarriage of her mother, the family moved to the Lower Mainland of British Columbia, when she was a young child.

She went to work in Vancouver as a nanny and housekeeper in her early teens and often spoke of the many good friends she made during that time. One of those friends, Kate Goertz, introduced her to a handsome cousin from Alberta, who won her heart and married her within a few months.

She moved to Coaldale with her new husband, Henry Dyck, and was soon plunged into the life of farming with a large new family.

They farmed in Coaldale until 1949, when they moved to a farm in the Chipman Creek district of Pincher Creek. There they farmed, joined in community activities, and were very active members of the Springridge Mennonite Church.

In 1976 they retired from farming, moving to the town of Pincher Creek. They were both still driving school bus at that time. Many in Pincher still remember riding Mrs. Dyck’s bus. Others knew her as Grandma Dyck and some even called her Mommy Dyck.

In town, Mom spent many happy hours quilting, working in the hospital tuck shop, looking after and spending time with grandchildren, fishing with Dad, playing cards with family and friends, bowling, and spending time with her church family.

Mom was predeceased by her parents; three sisters and two brothers; her husband, Henry; her infant son Henry; her son-in-law Jake Janzen; and also by numerous other in-laws from both sides of the family.

She is survived by one half-brother, Peter Vonniessen; two brothersin-law, Nick and Abe Dyck; one sister-in-law, Laura Vonniessen; four sons, John (Petra), Nick (June), Gordon, Fred (Anne); one daughter, Beverly Janzen; 12 grandchildren with spouses; 20 great-grandchildren and two soon to be born; as well as many nieces and nephews.

Mom went to meet her Lord on May 12, 2015, just three days short of her 93rd birthday. She will be missed and not forgotten by all who knew and loved her. Her life was full and blessed and she would tell you so.

Rest in peace, Mom. We love you.

A funeral service was held on May 16, 2015, at Springridge Mennonite Church, with Pastor Harold Schilk officiating.

Readers can cast a vote for Who by Fire

By Brad Quarin The finalists for this year’s Alberta Readers’ Choice Award have been announced, and once again, readers may vote for an author from the Pincher Creek area.

Fred Stenson, who is from the Twin Butte area, is one of only five finalists for his novel Who by Fire. This comes one year after Cowley author Tyler Trafford won for Almost a Great Escape.

In November, Fred read from the book at Pincher Creek’s Kootenai Brown Pioneer Village.

“That was a wonderful reading,” he says. He was impressed by how many people came out, and regards it as one of his best events of that season.

He read for 15 to 20 minutes, followed by a long question-and-answer session. Many of the faces in the crowd were familiar, and some spoke to him about their own experiences with the subject matter.

Who by Fire is a fictionalized history of how the gas industry affected rural communities in the 1960s.

Many gas plants could be found around Alberta, and it was here where sour gas was pioneered, he says. In the past, problems or inefficiencies at the plants could create difficulties, including illnesses, at downwind homes.

Fred wrote it as someone who has often been skeptical of the oil and gas industry, and says he was ill as a child because of a plant near his farm. He’s still upset that neither industry nor government shut it down.

However, he has also written a history on the oil and gas industry, and spoke to engineers who worked at that plant. This helped him describe what

He feels the story bears parallels with the current oilsands debate.

While the book might be expected to be controversial, the general feedback Fred has received is that it is fair.

The family of William Geddes, a lawyer who led a case against the plants, also expressed gratitude for a work that could remind people of his services.

Fred recommends the novel to all Albertans, as readers from both rural and urban settings, within and outside the industry, have responded to it well.

This is the first time Fred has been up for the Alberta Reader’s Choice Award, sponsored by Edmonton Public Library.

He didn’t fully know if the novel would be eligible and didn’t submit it for consideration himself, so the nomination took him by surprise. A short list of finalists was compiled by an Edmonton Public Library jury.

Readers have until July 6 to read the finalists’ books, at which point voting will open at www.epl.ca/alberta-readers-choice. Voting runs until Aug. 31.

Who by Fire is also nominated for an Evergreen Award, a vote on Canadian literature held by the Ontario Library Association. It was nominated for the Georges Bugnet Award for Fiction by the Writers’ Guild of Alberta. Fred previously won that award in 2001 for The Trade.

Applications available now for Art in the Library 2016

By Brad Quarin The second Art in the Library show in Pincher Creek has opened and plans are already in motion for the next shows in 2016.

“We are very pleased with the response from local artists for AL 2015 and encourage local artists to participate in AL 2016,” says Elaine Steinke, Lebel Gallery curator.

The call for submission for AL 2016 is available on www.pinchercreekarts. com and www.pinchercreeklibrary.ca/ content/community-resources. The deadline to apply is Oct. 1.

The show uses Pincher Creek and District Municipal Library as a venue to showcase art. Elaine calls it “an exciting collaboration” between the Allied Arts Council and the library that will run every year.

As with AL 2015, AL 2016 will consist of three shows, featuring different artists from around southern Alberta.

To apply, an artist can email a submission or drop it off at the Lebel Gallery.

Art in the Library is limited to framed works and art that can be hung on a wall. There is no particular theme for the three shows, but the works are expected to be family-friendly.

The work ultimately exhibited is selected by an anonymous jury, whose members may have artistic backgrounds, Elaine says.

She also urges people to see Art in the Library now, and the third show in the fall. “In this way, we all continue to support this excellent collaboration and opportunity to promote art and artists in our local community,” she says.

Time out for tea

It was “a very good year” for the Bellecrest Seniors Strawberry Tea, which saw 115 orders for deliveries of goodies and with 50 to 70 people expected at the Bellecrest Seniors Centre, says Pam Vamplew.
