My Little Corner

As a youngster I enjoyed watching Family Feud on TV and waiting for Richard Dawson to proclaim, “And the survey says ...”

It was always fun to guess the top answers. It was also interesting how far off I, and many of the contestants, could be with our guesses.

We’ve run two reader surveys in the past year, and were pleased to receive over 100 responses to each one.

To those who took the time to share their thoughts I extend huge thanks. I believe it’s only through opening yourself up for constructive criticism that you can continue to grow.

There are many good suggestions, and some have already been implemented.

For example, I’m sure you’ve noticed the look of the front page has changed.

This was a significant thing to do, but I must say that Brenda and I both love the opportunity to use larger photos.

In the first survey, many people said they would like to see more stories from Crowsnest Pass. Just as many said they would like to see more from Pincher Creek!

We strive for a well-balanced paper every week, but there are times when content skews in one direction or another.

On the second survey, there has been an indication that people would like to see more from the MD of Pincher Creek communities and Piikani First Nation.

Only one person suggested more from Crowsnest Pass.

I planned to run the entire list of results in one issue of the paper, but due to space constraints, it is broken into two parts, with the first found on page 24 of today’s paper.

I hope you will take the time to read through the comments, and to let us know if any thoughts pop into your head that can be added.

It’s often easier to fill out a survey or comment card when you’re unhappy with something like a broken toilet in a hotel room.

From almost 250 responses, we have received terrific suggestions but no negativity. Your kind words spur all of us at the Breeze to continue doing our best for you every week. Thank you!

Lost and Found Found: A set of keys in a bag, collected during the Dolphin Swim Club bottle drive on May 23.

Detective skills lead us to believe that the keys belong to a resident either from west of the Pincher Creek Co-op (Thistle Crescent, Briar Road and the new areas around there) or Beaver Mines.

The club pre-sorted all the bags from the rest of the Pincher Creek, but the keys were found by the bottle depot staff.

On the key ring are a Ford vehicle key, a key fob, a set of what looks like door keys, and one key with a colourful print. Call 403-627-5402 to retrieve them.

Sinclair family appreciates community support

By Brent Sinclair On July 15, 2014, tragedy shook communities in Alberta and the Yukon with the death of Tanner Sinclair.

Tanner touched the lives of many people in his short life. The hunting world, along with residents of both Pincher Creek and Whitehorse, continue to support his family.

Two men, Bert Frelink and Lee Fernquist, wanted to help and to give a gift to Tanner’s family.

Bert moved to Canada from Holland in 1972. A specialty pastry chef and production baker at Southern Alberta Institute of Technology in Calgary for 18 years, a teacher, a dog musher, and a hospital maintenance co-ordinator at the Pincher Creek hospital, Bert has become very well known across Canada and into

the United States for his custom bow-and-arrow making, which started as a hobby some 20 years ago.

He wanted to assist, in any way possible, Tanner’s family and his widow, Whitney, during the difficult times and with raising their two daughters as a single mom.

One evening he called and asked me to come over, as he wanted to talk.

Over the years, I had given Bert some musk ox horn, wood and other things I had picked up on my travels around the country. I didn’t know at the time that some of it would be used for bow-making material.

Six months had passed when he called. He said, “I have something to show you.” What I saw, when he handed me a bow with an inscription in Tanner’s

Show and shine works miracles

By Brad Quarin Showing off a neat vehicle will be a good deed this Saturday, as Pincher Creek Walmart holds its third annual show and shine.

Walmart holds the event as a fundraiser for the Children’s Miracle Network, which supports Alberta Children’s Hospital in Calgary.

Everyone and any vehicle is welcome, including motorcycles, says organizer Gayle MacIntyre. Most vehicles entered into the show and shine are classics or antiques.

Registration will be taken the day of the event, at 9 a.m.. The $15 fee goes to the Children’s Miracle Network.

The show and shine also raises money through T-shirt sales and a barbecue. The food and pop are donated by Walmart.

The day starts off with a pancake breakfast at 8 a.m., and a DJ will arrive at 11.

The music is being donated by Stuart Schramm, whom Gayle calls an “amazing guy.”

Businesses have also donated prizes for draws.

Last year’s show and shine raised $3,200. For the first time this year, the show and shine is featured in the Northwest Cruise Calendar, so hopefully even more people will learn about it and check it out.

SINCLAIR, continued from page 4 memory, was a bit more than overwhelming. It was what Bert called “a little something to help keep Tanner’s memory alive” and to make a few dollars to help Tanner’s family.

I told him it would mean a lot if he personally presented it to Whitney and Keele.

A lot of heartfelt time and work went into the one-of-a-kind bow and the accessories to go with it. The bow and arrows were custom-built and would be auctioned at a fundraiser, with the proceeds going into an education fund for Tanner and Whitney’s children.

Bert has been applying for a coveted archery bighorn sheep tag here in Alberta for several years. He had secured Tanner as his guide when that letter came in the mailbox with his name on that once-in-a-lifetime tag. That now will be only a dream for Bert.

One day about two months ago, longtime friend Lee Fernquist, who grew up in the rural Twin Butte and Pincher Creek areas, stopped in to visit. We got talking and I mentioned that I was stuck looking for a way to transport the bow and arrows to the Pope & Young Club convention in Phoenix. I asked if he knew anyone who could make a nice enough case to keep them in and display them for the auction.

After a few phone calls and discussion, Lee himself produced a walnut presentation case to house the bow and the custom-made footed-shaft arrows — one that would stop anyone who saw it in their tracks. The unique design and craftsmanship, the different wood used, along with the brass hardware and antler burr knobs to hold the arrows, made it nothing less than a one-of-a-kind work of art and showpiece.

There has been an overwhelming amount of support mentally and financially from two communities. It goes to prove that there are some amazing people who are there to do whatever they can to help when tragedy falls upon a family.

A longtime friend and bowhunting client of mine purchased the bow and case in Phoenix. It was a very generous donation from Dr. Walt Palmer and his wife, Toni, and their family to help ensure that Tanner’s children get a chance at the education that Tanner would have worked so hard for them to have.

Thank you to all of you in Pincher Creek and to those from so many faraway places who have been there and stood beside the Sinclair and Sandulak families during these difficult times.

McHappy Day was a good one for Windy Slopes

By Brad Quarin Windy Slopes Health Foundation has reason to smile after the Pincher Creek McDonald’s restaurant partnered with the group for a successful McHappy Day. For the fundraiser, $1 from every McCafe beverage, Happy Meal and Big Mac went to Windy Slopes, which supports the Pincher Creek Health Centre, and to Ronald McDonald House Charities.

Windy Slopes members such as Diana Shortt were also there with a display on the group and to take cash donations.

Diana says the day went very well, and $800 was raised from the sales and a cash jar. Windy Slopes members greeted customers at McDonald’s and told them the money would go to enhancing the labour and delivery suite at the health centre.

The suite needs new lighting to make the physician’s job easier and can be made more comfortable for women, Diana says. The community seemed excited about the project, which probably needs more funding.

It was McDonald’s that approached Windy Slopes for the partnership, as McDonald’s knew the hospital could always use new equipment for deliveries, says manager Donnelle Teneycke. She says this McHappy Day went well and expects this partnership will continue for years to come.

Carpentry students build successful raffle

By Brad Quarin The carpentry group in experiential learning had a busy week recently, as students of Livingstone School and Matthew Halton High School built a play shed.

The shed, an insulated dog house and a planter were then raffled off to raise money for the MHHS carpentry program. They sold 187 tickets and raised $2,805 for a portable table saw.

Michelle Duncan was the winner of the play shed, Clara Yagos won the dog house, and the planter went to Jen Bruder.

Clara will be donating the dog house to the Pincher Creek Humane Society/ SPCA.

Agnes Mitchell’s family would like to thank everyone for the kindness shown to us in our recent bereavement. Special thanks to the staff and volunteers at Vista Village for the wonderful care to both Agnes and her family, to the home care staff for their visits and expertise, with special thanks to Laurie. Eden’s Funeral Home staff were so helpful with all the arrangements and we appreciate them letting the family be so involved in the service. Heartfelt thanks to Brent Woodard for his prayers, counselling and down-to-earth advice. Thank you also to Bessie Carlson, Diana, Shelley and Patty for the beautiful music and to the United Church Ladies for the lovely lunch. Feedback sought on a C.N.P. summer event

By Brad Quarin It’s going to be another summer without Thunder in the Valley or Rum Runner Days, the annual summer celebrations for Crowsnest Pass.

However, the municipality is inviting community groups and concerned citizens to an open discussion on Thursday about the possible return of a “marquee summer event.”

The municipal council wants feedback on whether the community wants a summer event and what it would consist of, says Lyle Hannan, director of community services.

Rum Runner Days for 2015 was cancelled, allegedly because of conflicts with community groups, so it’s hoped times and locations could be co-ordinated to work for everyone. That’s why numerous groups have been invited, Lyle says.

However, anyone interested in attending is welcome. The municipality will also ask what financial contributions people are willing to make.

The open discussion will be held at the Blairmore Elks Hall at 7 p.m.

Peering into a peer’s eyes

By Brad Quarin High school students found themselves behind the optometrist’s machines on a field trip to Pincher Creek Eye Clinic. The Biology 30 class at Livingstone School in Lundbreck made the trip while working on a unit on the eye. What better way to learn than by peering into each other’s eyes?

Dr. Laura Chisholm showed students how to use the autorefractor, which estimates prescriptions, and the visual field machine. The visiting teens were able to take retinal photos of each other.

Student Ryan Grove found the retina looked much different than he expected.

Another student, Ethan Paridaen, observed different hair pigments in the retina.

School spirit hits the road this Saturday in the Pass

By Brad Quarin Simply taking a test drive in a new Ford will help the youth of Livingstone School and Crowsnest Consolidated High School this Saturday.

For a second time, Castle Ford is holding a Drive 4UR School event in Crowsnest Pass, for the benefit of the high school students in Coleman and Lundbreck.

This time, it will have a new location, outside Crowsnest Mall in Blairmore.

It will help the event attract people going by, says Naomi Schweb, a member of Livingstone School’s booster club.

Michael Duarte-Pedrosa, president of the CCHS academics and athletics society, adds that the mall is often where people go on the weekend, anyway.

For every test drive taken in a vehicle supplied by Castle Ford, Ford of Canada pays $20, donating up to $6,000.

That money will be split evenly between the two schools for extracurricular activities. In Lundbreck, it will help with tournament registrations, sports fees, busing, uniforms and coaches, Naomi says.

At CCHS, it could go to extracurricular English programs, sports equipment, music stands and a “whole smorgasbord” of other expenses, Michael says.

Meditation from a clump of sod “Preacher lady,” the old farmer challenged, “your book-learning sermons are OK in church, but I hear God best out in the field.”

He turned a spadeful of dirt. It was rich in colour and texture. He squeezed a handful to test for moisture, showed me evidence of living organisms, and told how he worked to stop the soil drift when he bought this quarter section. “This is God’s handiwork!”

In this year, declared by the UN to be the International Year of Soils, I think of my friend — and his ongoing lecture from the soil. He pointed to a few leaves with some dirt and rainwater, decomposing in a leaky bucket hung on a fence post. He talked about soil’s filtration capacity, purifying water as it passed into the aquifer. He kept saying, “We gotta care for it, ’cause on the human scale of time it’s non-renewable.”

“Soil is the life-giving umbilical cord that connects us with the Creator,” my friend continued.

Piikani students have an appointment with destiny

By Brad Quarin Five students of Piikani Nation Secondary School will celebrate A Beginning for a New Destiny at their high school graduation on Friday evening.

Ceremonies, taking place at the school, begin at 6 p.m. and consist of a banquet, grad march and the certificate presentations. Decorations will reflect the school colours, red and black.

The five grads are good students who always try hard, says guidance counsellor Clayton Twigg. One of them, Cole Yellow Face, is on the basketball team.

The students wanted guest speakers who had been through the school system in the Piikani Nation and had become successful. So, they are having Grade 7 teacher Cecilia Big Bull-Jackson and the tribe’s chief executive officer, Byron Jackson, speak at the event.

The valedictorian is Todd Yellow Wings.

Jean June Phillips June 30, 1924 – May 13, 2015

Rain fell as the world cried for the passing of June Phillips (née Crook), who died May 13, 2015, with her family at her side.

June was a town and country girl. She spent her earliest years on the Crook farm south of Pincher Creek, but moved into town to live with her grandparents to attend school, which she loved.

Early on, June displayed her innate teaching talents, lining up her baby brother, sister, and all her stuffed animals to play “school.” Later, proving her commitment to teaching, she attended normal school in Calgary. By the age of 19, she was teaching for real in a one-room

schoolhouse in Buck Lake, Alta.

She used those talents throughout her life, formally teaching for 32 years, finishing her professional career at Pincher Creek’s Canyon Elementary School in 1984. She took breaks to have children in her 30s, and to return to university in her 40s to attain her B.Ed. Even after retirement, teaching remained in her blood. She never really stopped. She volunteered to help others learn English as a second language, to teach line dancing (in her living room, the seniors centre, or wherever the music was playing), and to offer a classroom-like atmosphere to seniors with her “Afternoons With June” gig at Crestview Lodge.

In addition to her extensive teaching career, June was also an accomplished artist.

Rigidly nonconformist, she insisted on creativity. Her daughters remember her aversion to a representational artistic style and to colouring between the lines! She spent two summers on scholarship at the Banff School of Fine Arts in the late 1940s, creating many sketches and paintings, which are now family treasures.

June was a nonconformist thinker, always keeping an open mind. In the 1970s, she was heard to say she was a “women’s libber,” though she refused to burn her bra (but might vote socialist).

June met her husband, Ken, when they both boarded with the Becks in Pincher Creek. They married in 1951, and together raised three daughters. They travelled to over 20 countries, were named Pincher Creek’s senior citizens of the year in 1994, and shared an evolving spirituality, finding faith communities in the Anglican and Lutheran churches in Brocket and Pincher Creek. Together they volunteered in the community and supported numerous other people in many different ways.

June touched many lives, but mostly she’ll be remembered as a caring, kind and sweet lady. We will miss her smile and her humorous insights, and will remember that she always cared.

June was predeceased by her parents, William B. Crook and Lydia Crook (née Bogush); her husband, Ken Phillips; and her sister, Charlotte (Bobby) Tomlinson (née Crook). She is survived by her daughters, Peggy (Phil Jones), Donna (Sam Backlin) and Ann (Michael OReilly); her grandchildren, Marc, Connor and Cailan Bartram and Monique (Chris Sheasby) and Natasha Backlin; her brother, Bill (W.A.) Crook (Edna); and many nieces, nephews and their children and grandchildren.

The family wishes to sincerely thank Dr. Bev Burton and the staff of the Pincher Creek hospital for the excellent care provided to June, and all the staff at Vista Village who were involved in caring for June like family for the past five years.

Donations in June’s memory can be made to the Good Samaritan Society (www.gss.org) with designation to Vista Village Pincher Creek, or to the charity of your choice.

A memorial service for friends and family will be held at a later date.

Miles Hesselgrave 1948 – 2015

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Miles Russell Hesselgrave, formerly of Bellevue, who was called from this life on May 22, 2015, at the age of 67.

Miles was born on April 20, 1948, in Oliver, B.C., to parents, Milo and Hope Hesselgrave. He was raised with a sense of responsibility and a caring nature. He learned to appreciate what we have rather than what we have not, and his greatest blessing was his family; he made them the priority in his life and he was rewarded with their love and admiration.

Miles worked as a medic but also dedicated himself to the Scouts, Citizens on Patrol, volunteer fire department, Red Knights, and Ride for Sight charity. He loved to cruise the open roads on his motorcycle, snack on popcorn, collect model trains, watch hockey, spend precious moments with his family, and to make you smile. He will be dearly missed and always fondly remembered.

He is survived by his devoted children, John Hesselgrave, Steven Turner and Tina (Rob) Davies; his cherished grandchildren, Justin Manning, Nicole Manning and Olivia Manning; his feline friends; as well as his extended family and many close friends.

He was predeceased by his father, Milo Todd Hesselgrave; his mother, Hope Audrey Hesselgrave (née Pottruff); and his sister, Wilda VanWinkle.

The visitation service, allowing us to say our final farewell, was held on May 26, 2015, at Fantin’s Funeral Chapel in Blairmore.

Huddlestun Senior Centre news

By Joyce McFarland If you are thinking about last Christmas, or next Christmas, it’s about the same amount of time. How about that! So, if you have a plan, you’d better get at it.

It was gratifying to have six members (not board members) attend the last board meeting. They sat quietly through the first items on the agenda and were quite prepared with questions and information under “other business” on the agenda. Although all did not go smoothly, it was a shot in the arm to have members show their interest and concerns at the board table where they belong.

The chairman notes on every calendar that members need to be heard.

But, if your attendance at a board meeting is not feasible, he welcomes your phone call at 403- 627-1511.

At the last crib game, Gloria LeBlanc and Jack Rumsey had to play second fiddle to Irene Hinman, a longstanding member whom we have not seen for quite a while. I guess the sun can coax anybody out of the house, because there were 20 people at the crib game. So, Irene went home richer than she came.

On June 17 at 4:30 p.m., immediately after the Legion fish derby, we will gather for a potluck supper at the fish pond. Please register your attendance and your food item at the centre. The Legion has made the kitchen and facilities available for us, so we request your donation to a jar for the Legion as you come to enjoy supper as well as horseshoes and bocce ball.

If the weather is frightful, we will use the centre; we will keep you posted.

After a long and successful program of Friday afternoon bingo once a month, it has been decided to cancel the games for July and August. Virginia Belcourt has done a wizard job of giving our members and residents of Crestview Lodge some fun afternoons. There were also snacks and goodies from the Pincher Creek Co-op after paying out the $20 jackpot at coffee time.

Please note that the last afternoon bingo will be held on June 26 at 1:30 p.m.

Personal summer plans are upon all of us now. The next board meeting will be on June 19 at 10:30 a.m., and then Jack Rumsey has agreed to call an ad hoc meeting during July or August if any important matter might arise. This suggests that it is also a good time for me to get away, so there will be no Huddlestun news for July and August.

When the lazy, hazy days of summer are over, we urge old and new members to put our seniors programs on your to-do list for the fall. All new faces and new ideas are most welcome.

How sad it is for me to write on behalf of all our members and, indeed, for many residents of Pincher Creek, that we recently lost June Phillips, a longtime stalwart member of the senior centre. She served on every position on the board, and no volunteer duty was too big or too small for her to tackle. With gratitude for June’s service to the community and to our organization, we offer our sincere sympathy to the family of this great lady.

Support for all dealing with Parkinson’s

By Brad Quarin Join Brian Treadwell, Parkinson Alberta’s client services co-ordinator, for a discussion of a common neurodegenerative disorder and to take steps to help those affected.

Brian will be coming to Crowsnest Pass and Pincher Creek this week, with a goal to start support groups in those communities.

“It’s a life-changing diagnosis, but it doesn’t mean your life is over,” he says. “Some people can lean on each other.”

Parkinson Alberta is a non-profit organization that offers patients of Parkinson’s disease help to function as best as they can.

Often, exercise is the best way to keep control.

Walking on a treadmill helps, and the University of Lethbridge even has a skating program for patients.

The purpose of the upcoming presentations is to set up groups to offer more emotional support to patients, caregivers and families.

Brian has been with the organization for four years, with a goal to extend its reach. He has already started

a group in Taber, and knows there are people in Crowsnest Pass with Parkinson’s.

It can take eight years for a diagnosis, during which other possible causes for problems can be ruled out.

Often, it takes 12 years for a Parkinson’s patient to become open about the disorder, Brian says.

A person may notice a tremor, problems with balance, a less expressive face or smaller handwriting. The disorder may have environmental and genetic causes.

The thing to do is to talk to a trained neurologist.

A support group to deal with the psychological and social aspects of Parkinson’s disease could meet in person regularly or have a toll-free number.

Caregivers would be able to learn from such groups. “I’ve had the nurses break down and cry,” Brian says.

Brian will be leading the presentation at the Blairmore Lions Pride Hall on Thursday from 7 to 8 p.m. He will lead the presentation again at Ramada Pincher Creek on Friday from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m.

The presentations are free to attend and preregistration is not required.

Varley grant program supports rural life The Community Foundation is pleased to announce that expressions of interest are now being accepted for a new grant program, the Henry S. Varley Fund for Rural Life. This grant program will provide support through community organizations to people who are committed to keeping rural communities thriving in southwestern Alberta. The program will fund projects that are innovative and collaborative.

Applicants looking for grants to fund projects in southwestern Alberta communities — stretching from the United States border north to Nanton, and from the British Columbia border east to Grassy Lake — can visit www.cflsa.fluidreview.com to fill out an expression of interest form. Applications will be accepted throughout the year, with the first review of proposals to be considered for funding beginning on June 15, 2015.

Information on the eligibility of organizations as well as the granting criteria is available on the Community Foundation’s website: www. cflsa.ca. The foundation is able to provide grants only to Canada Revenue Agency-qualified recipients. Foundation staff are available to discuss project proposals and eligibility at 403-3285297.

The funding for the Henry S. Varley Fund for Rural Life was established through a bequest of William (Bill) Long to honour his uncle Henry Varley and the family’s ranching heritage. The Varley family ranched southeast of Pincher Creek in the community of Fishburn for a century. Bill Long established the Varley Fund to support the quality of rural life, which the Varley family greatly valued.

“Mr. Long had a vision that rural communities should stay viable and successful long after his passing,” says Dennis Hatt, foundation president. “We look forward to seeing how this fund can make a difference in rural communities throughout southwestern Alberta.”

There are some specific ideas we most definitely will follow up on.

Letters from readers are always welcome and will generally show up in the Mailbox column. In keeping with the positive nature of the paper, those letters inviting controversy are not published.

Hard/”real”/government news is something that may be covered more in the future, but will still be presented in a positive manner.

We have a new columnist sharing his reviews of local restaurants. Watch for On the Menu if you’re interested.

We are always happy to promote community events through the calendar pages, but do need to know before our deadline, which is the Thursday prior to publication. If we have enough lead time, we can also prepare a story. Unfortunately, there are cases when we’re not aware of an event until after it happens, but we do our best!

Space permitting, the second half of the survey results, along with a photo of our draw winner, will appear in next week’s issue.
