My Little Corner The majority of my years have been spent in small towns, so moving to Pincher Creek from Saskatoon a few years ago wasn’t nearly the culture shock it could have been.

While each town has its own localisms, at heart I believe they are all primarily the same.

There is generally a strong connection to local history, which gives each town its unique identity. Bloodlines run back to the earliest days of the community. Many, like the coal miners, ranchers and farmers, are proud to carry on long-standing family traditions today.

Typically there is a small, but strong, volunteer core. People know one another, and your business is sometimes community business whether you want it to be or not.

Small-town folk can be reluctant to face change, even when they know it’s best.

Young people can’t wait to leave to find adventure in the nearest city or the farthest reaches of the globe. Many will surprise themselves by choosing to come back when they realize small-town life is part of who they are.

Last week, I caught a glimpse of Pincher Creek life through an outsider’s eyes.

On Tuesday afternoon I heard an unfamiliar voice ask for Brenda in our front office. After a response of “Well, where the h--- is she,” I thought I’d better see what was going on.

An editorial by Shannon Robin Linda (Greenly) Larsen’s was the voice I was overhearing. She and her friend Debbie were visiting from Toronto and weren’t expecting Brenda to have switched a shift that day.

I recognized Linda immediately from photos and simple family resemblance. The ladies were having a rough day, and were obviously disappointed to learn Brenda wasn’t in.

Like any good small-town host, I suggested we sneak next door to the Legion for a visit and a chance to blow off some steam.

Linda hadn’t been there for years, and Debbie was quite intrigued by the place. She said she was from a small town outside of Toronto. Later in our conversation, I learned this “small town” has a population of about 20,000.

Much of our discussion centred on the good and the bad of small-town living, and it was most interesting to see it through Debbie’s eyes.

She soaked in the details of the Legion, particularly taking note when a name was added to the hospital board. We laughed together when a former classmate of Linda’s sent a round of drinks to our table. It was another gesture of local hospitality.

Debbie had only two days to enjoy Pincher Creek and the beauty of the area, but I’m sure those days will leave a lasting impression of what life is like in our small town.

The children love the Rescue Girls and feed them watermelon. They are among 40 birds at the ranch, including two turkeys who are pets, not for meat.

The turkeys come running when you call them, like being petted and rub against their owners’ legs.

In her work, Kimberly has been inspired by the other volunteers. “The people that are working there are passionate about seeing good things come and seeing things happen,” she says. “That’s a good drive.”

Another thing that has enabled Kimberly to achieve what she has is her family. Aside from parenting and volunteering, she works on the family ranch and sells Scentsy products. Time management would be impossible without her husband, mom, father-in-law and mother-in-law.

Among the team, they get the children moved around and tasks at home done. Kimberly and her husband also both patrol Lundbreck for Citizens on Patrol and the RCMP. Fittingly and unexpectedly, her husband and her mom showed up at the luncheon during National Volunteer Week. Kimberly was there with the Lundbreck Citizens Council and Citizens on Patrol.

Her family was there to see her receive the citizen of the year award, which came as a surprise to Kimberly. It was an emotional moment.

“It was nice to be recognized,” she says. “I really enjoy doing what I do.”

By Brad Quarin Crowsnest Pass had a good start to the May long weekend as staff of Western Financial Group in Coleman baked up some treats and flipped burgers for a barbecue and bake sale.

The money raised will all go to the Crowsnest Community Support Society, which supports adults with developmental disabilities. Eleanor Bergen, one of the

bakers, says they chose the group because it helps a lot of people, it deserves more publicity and its Bagatelle store is wonderful.

Between 30 to 40 people came to the barbecue and gave generously, raising $450.

Vicki first heard of Camp Horizon through the children’s hospital.

Natalie had never really been a camper before then, her mom says.

Vicki mentioned at work last year that sending Natalie to camp was expensive, despite the subsidies from Easter Seals. So, one of her fellow drivers, Cheryl Anne Nazarek, hit on the idea of all the drivers bringing in cans and bottles for the bottle depot over a couple of months.

About 20 drivers wound up raising between $800 and $900, with what turned out to be a lot of cans. Sharon expressed surprise that so much money could be raised from recyclables, and it meant the Hewisons’ costs were completely covered. A few tears were shed.

Vicki says she is grateful, and Natalie says she feels good. Natalie didn’t know many of the drivers at First Student previously, and she and Cheryl Anne met at last year’s barbecue.

First Student is collecting bottles and cans for Natalie again this year.

This time, anyone in town can take cans and bottles to the bottle depot directly and tell them to put the money in First Student’s account.

Natalie says she is excited about returning to camp and reuniting with her friends.

Fish derby runs next Wednesday

By Brad Quarin Seniors and people with disabilities can break out their fishing rods and nets for the Bobby Burns Fish Derby, unfolding in Pincher Creek on June 17.

The derby is held at Bobby Burns Fish Pond, an artificial pond built by Co-op butcher Robert Burns and his wife, Janet. The property now belongs to the municipal district and is cared for by the Pincher Creek Legion, says Fred White, chairman of the fish pond committee.

The water is populated by fish, thanks to the Allison Creek fish hatchery, which donates 1,000 each year.

Typically, elderly and disabled anglers at the

pond are limited to two fish, but they can catch a few more at the derby and get to keep their catches.

There’s no limit to the number of anglers who can attend the derby, with last year’s bringing out 100 people, Fred says.

Any individual aged 65 or over, or who is considered handicapped, can simply show up, but groups should let Fred know they are going by calling 403-627-8942.

The derby runs from 10 a.m to noon, followed by lunch, courtesy of the ladies auxiliary.

Medals will be given for seniors and disabled anglers for the biggest fish, smallest fish, oldest fisherman and oldest fisherwoman.

On the move for mental wellness

By Brad Quarin It’s hoped over 300 people will be on the move for mental-health awareness on Saturday.

Darcy’s Nature Walk for Mental Wellness is returning for another year, with registration at 9:15 a.m. at Fireman’s Park in Bellevue, and the walk at 10.

The goal for over 300 participants is realistic, as last year brought out slightly more than 300, says organizer Randi Lynn Rinaldi. The Rinaldi family and friends will be promoting the walk to people who haven’t tried it before.

Since the organizers want more people to take the walk, they don’t stress that participants make donations. The goal of the walk is simply to get people out and active, and raise awareness for mental health.

It was started in memory of Randi Lynn’s mother, Darcy, who took her life in 2007.

Today, the walk is made possible by about 30 volunteers, all family and

friends. They handle the water stations, first aid, food and putting up the tents.

They work in partnership with the Crowsnest Pass Health Foundation, and Darcy’s Nature Walk received a donation of $1,000 from the municipality, Randi Lynn says.

Last year, the walk supported having Yoga for Grief, a gentle yoga course that went over well and may be repeated. Around 20 people participated last time.

This year, the walk will support a two-day mental-health first aid workshop in the fall, which will help people intervene when another person is in crisis. The course will be open to anyone interested.

The walk has also supported the Faces of Mental Health ad campaign, centring on interviews with locals who have experienced mental-health issues. The campaign was noticeable, and the people in the ads had others approach them to share their stories, Randi Lynn says. They hope to grow the campaign next year.

But, of course, people need to eat all year round, says Sharon Roberts, location manager for First Student in Pincher Creek.

That’s why, for the first time in the summer, First Student is having its Stuff the Bus campaign on Saturday to gather food for the Junction food bank.

The goal is to fill a bus with food donations, an idea borrowed from Edmonton Transit. First Student has done this for the food bank twice before, at Christmastime.

It takes a lot of food to fill a medium-sized bus, with last time seeing a lot of bags on every seat and the floor. However, if the event goes really well, they can also bring in a bigger one.

Potential Programs for Your Landfill

Numerous changes have occurred in the last four years to this facility. We are no longer the small municipal landfill we were some 30 years ago. The facility has seen enormous growth and expansion along with an ever-increasing customer base. The operation of this site has expanded to meet, or exceed, governmental regulations and guidelines. Continued efforts are being made to promote reuse and recycling of household and commercial waste streams. Here are but a few of those impending programs: • Electronics recycling with an opportunity to expand to smaller household appliances • Farm and ranch agricultural plastics and silage bags • Clean wood grinding and reintroduction to mulch and bedding for animals • Tire collection and recycling • Used engine oil recycled and used for heating shops and buildings at the landfill.

Your landfill has just recently partnered with the Municipal District of Pincher Creek to have the road to our site paved. This joint venture has seen a cleaner and safer roadway to the facility. Our commitment to this project provides 75% of the funds over a long-term debenture.

Future Plans

Scholarships Introduced in 2012, the landfill’s Environmental Science & Technology Scholarship is designed to assist local area graduates who are pursuing careers pertaining to environmental stewardship.

Service Plus Program This program was introduced in 2013 to encourage a cleaner community.

Each community is provided with equipment and landfill staff to assist in removing unwanted household items from residential properties.

The Service Plus Program will again be offered in 2015. Please check with your local public works department for dates and locations.

Over the past few years, management has been working on new programs that will further reduce what we put into the landfill. Preliminary plans are in place and being evaluated.

• Discussion with incinerator manufacturers that could lead to reducing what we landfill by 30% and also provide an alternative to the way we currently handle dead stock and wild animal roadkill carcasses. This could provide a long-awaited solution for our southern ranchers’ problem in disposing of beef carcasses.

• Plans and architectural drawings have been commissioned for a new recycling and reuse centre at the landfill. This building would provide additional capacity to recycle paper, plastic, cardboard and household metal containers. The program would work in conjunction with our current local recyclers, increasing the volume our region could recycle.

• Dual scale and improved access planned for fall 2015/16.

• Enhanced services within this facility would also include fluorescent bulb recycling, propane tank evacuation and disposal, freon retrieval, sorting and distribution of bicycle parts.

We continue to look for innovative ways to reduce our environmental footprint and give our residents quality service for years to come.

New events for Canada Day Canada Day is fast approaching and the Coleman Community Society is busy getting ready for the big celebrations.

The society has once again received grants from the Municipality of Crowsnest Pass, to help out with all our activities throughout the year, and from Canadian Heritage, specifically for Canada Day. The streets of Coleman will be humming with activity as the parade, beginning at 11 a.m., winds its way from Horace Allen School and Flumerfelt Park through downtown streets, ending at the Coleman Legion.

The parade theme this year is all about Canada, with several significant anniversaries in 2015: the 200th birthday of Sir John A. Macdonald, Canada’s first prime minister; the 150th anniversary of the Charlottetown Conference, which laid the foundation of our country; and the 50th anniversary of our proud red and white Maple Leaf flag.

Please put on your best Canadian colours and participate in our parade. The society is looking for folks, young and old, who would like to participate by riding on our float dressed in period costume.

At the conclusion of the parade will be the flag-raising ceremonies at noon at the Legion, followed by the Cranbrook Bugle Band’s performance on the street outside.

The first of the additions this year is the unveiling of the Heritage Initiative’s kiosk, directly across from the Coleman Legion. That will begin at 12:30 p.m., followed by a walking tour of the historical buildings and sites of Coleman, taking about 1½ hours.

In Flumerfelt Park the Astro Jump will be available all afternoon for the children to enjoy, along with the ever-popular water park. The Blairmore Lions will offer up their fabulous hamburgers and hotdogs at the concession, and a new concession this year will offer a variety of treats for the whole family.

For those who enjoy a more leisurely afternoon, the Strawberry Tea is going on at the Coleman Seniors Centre throughout the afternoon, the Legion will offer a variety of activities, and Crowsnest Museum admission is free to all who want to further explore our history.

Now on to the really exciting addition to Canada Day 2015. Orley Erwin Killoran 1935 – 2015

William (Bill) Crook

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Orley Erwin Killoran. He died peacefully after a long battle with cancer on May 29, 2015, in Pincher Creek. He was 80 years old.

Orley was born in Melfort, Sask., on March 26, 1935. He grew up in Gronlid, Sask., and had memories of running around in the hotel his parents operated. Later, the family moved to Alberta.

Orley’s huge interest in flying motivated him to get his private pilot’s licence at age 17 in Claresholm.

When Orley was 21, he took a steamer ship to Europe with a friend he met on a seismic crew. They visited Germany, Italy and France. He talked about that trip for years and remained friends with John the rest of his life.

Orley met Edna Nent in Edmonton, and they were married in 1961.

By 1969 they had three children — Kelly, Carolyn and Craig — and had moved to Pincher Creek to buy into Pincher Farm Equipment with his brothers, Jim and Terry. In 1982 Orley became president of the Farm Equipment Dealers Association of Alberta and British Columbia. Orley loved dealing with the local farmers and ranchers.

Orley’s favourite hobby was inventing, building and fixing things. Later in life, Orley started his own home appliance repair business. He gradually retired, but never stopped tinkering in the garage.

His other favourite thing to do was travelling. Some of his favourite trips were to Alaska, London, Italy and Barbados. And camping. He especially loved camping in the mountains.

As a loving husband, father and grandfather, he will be sadly missed by his wife and best friend of 54 years, Edna Killoran; and by his daughters, Kelly (Neil) Paulgaard and Carolyn (Glen) Philpott; his son, Craig Killoran; and his grandchildren, Pamela (Reed) Anderson, Scott and Randy Paulgaard, Nicole and Jeremy Philpott. He is also survived by his brothers, Jim (Rose) Killoran and Terry (Iris) Killoran; his sister, Alexis (John) Wiigs; and many nieces and nephews. Family and friends were very important to Orley.

Orley was predeceased by his parents, Alexander Killoran in 1982 and Gladys (Killoran) Burns in 2014.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, June 20, 2015, at Eden’s Funeral Home, 966 Elm St., Pincher Creek, with Pastor David Goff officiating.

William A. (Bill) Crook was born in Pincher Creek on Jan. 9, 1929. He grew up on the family farm and attended the Crook School for his early education.

He attended Olds Agricultural College, where he earned a poultry scholarship.

In 1952 he married Edna Olson and they took over the farm, where they raised their family and where he lived until his passing on May 30, 2015.

Over his lifetime, besides hay and grain crops, Bill raised sheep, cattle, pigs, turkeys and chickens for the meat and egg markets. Later in life, he raised a variety of poultry and a few cattle just to keep a hand in farming.

Bill was a line repairman for the local telephone party line until the installation of the current underground system. He served on the Municipal District of Pincher Creek council from 1972 to 1980, and was its representative on the Oldman River Regional Planning Commission. He worked at the Pincher Creek cattle auctions, where he was involved with both sheep and cattle. Bill also coached a boys’ baseball team and volunteered during the local fair with the livestock events.

Bill and Edna spent many hours planting a variety of trees and shrubs, along with maintaining large gardens and lawns, which were a favourite gathering place for family and friends to play baseball, horseshoes, etc., and to share stories around the firepit. Everyone enjoyed the special times on the well-kept lawns whenever they came to visit.

Some of our family’s favourite times were when Dad took us fishing and swimming on a Sunday. Bill learned to dance at the Crook School when young, and was known for his fancy footwork on the dance floor. Bill and Edna enjoyed their years of bowling together, up to three leagues a week, clogging with a local club, and dancing at the Great Canadian Barn Dance, where the band wrote and performed a special song in their honour. Bill’s family and farm were his life.

Bill was predeceased by his daughter Lorna; his parents, William B. and Lydia Crook; his sister Charlotte (Bobby) Tomlinson; and his sister and brother-in-law June and Ken Phillips.

He is survived by his wife, Edna; children John (Claudine), Leanna Schoenberger (Walter) and Kevin (Barb); four grandchildren, Chris (Ola), Amanda Wickens (Peter), Ryan Schoenberger (Lisa) and Kara Maron (Scott); four great-grandchildren, Eady, Evelette, William and Leela; brother-in-law Ray Tomlinson; and many nieces and nephews, with their children and grandchildren.

The family sincerely thanks Dr. Parker and the staff at the Pincher Creek hospital and Vista Village for Bill’s excellent care.

Donations in Dad’s memory may be made to the charity of your choice.

A private family memorial will be held at a later date.

Journey through the Castle wilderness

By Brad Quarin Guided hikes will once again be available to take you through the rugged terrain of the Castle Wilderness.

The Castle-Crown Wilderness Coalition leads the hikes through the area, which includes Castle Mountain and a provincial park.

The expeditions generate a lot of enthusiasm. “Everybody is anxious, because some people are new to the Castle,” says Wendy Ryan, outreach and stewardship co-ordinator. “And a lot of people will do the same hikes every year, because they’re familiar with the area and they have a passion for the Castle.”

Excitingly, some hikes that haven’t been done for a few years are back on the schedule. Wendy thinks the Suicide Creek hike will be interesting, not because it’s suicide, but because the moderate hike takes a secluded route through the forest to a lake basin.

The Grizzly Lake hike, which Wendy describes as “a scramble up the ridge,” on Aug. 29, is completely new.

Most of the hikes are rated as moderate, which can be suitable for newcomers, parents and children, seniors and anyone else.

A person wanting to join in should call the hike leader to learn the time and place to meet and for other information. The leaders need to know how many people to expect, as some hikes may be limited to 20 people.

Hikers will need to prepare for rain or shine and take along water, appropriate footwear and lunch. When hike leaders say, bikes will be needed to ride behind locked gates.

The moderate hikes begin on Saturday with the Big Sage hike, in which participants will hike one kilometre up and one kilometre down, checking out the wildflowers. Wendy, who is the leader, estimates 80 per cent of the flowers will be in bloom and can be recorded, but not picked. She can be reached at 403-6274106.

The next moderate hikes are the North Drywood Creek hike on June 20, led

by James Tweedie at 403-628-2422 and the Syncline Castle Trail System hike, led

by Jay Allen at 403-628-3048.

In July, there’s the July 4 Suicide Creek hike led by Kevin Kelly at 403-6275128, the July 11 Horseshoe Basin hike led by Jay, the July 18 Lost Creek hike led

The strenuous Bovin-Blue Lake hike runs all day on Aug. 22 and is led by Kevin.

There is also the eighth annual weed pull on the West Castle Wetlands Ecological Reserve on July 23. The reserve is of the highest status among provincial parks, with no hunting, fishing or camping, Wendy says. It’s good for bird-watching and spotting amphibians.

The weed pull targets invasive species to make sure the seeds don’t continue down the river. The effort attracts between 25 and 35 volunteers, with people coming from the Municipal District of Pincher Creek, Parks Canada, Alberta Parks and local fire departments.

The hikes are by donation, with the money helping the printing and staff costs in making the schedules. For more information, visit the Castle-Crown Wilderness Coalition’s Facebook page.

Apollonia (Polly) Marcial April 24, 1920 – May 31, 2015

It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Apollonia (Polly) Agnes Marcial on May 31, 2015, at Crowsnest Pass Continuing Care Centre.

Polly was predeceased by her husband of 64 years, Americo, in 2006, and by her beloved son Douglas in 1953.

She leaves behind and will be deeply missed by daughter Joan (Lambert) of Saanichton, B.C.; son Denis (Linda) of Cochrane; grandsons David (Lisa) and Scott of Calgary; son Allan (Lori) and grandson Tristan of Okotoks; devoted niece Helen Wasnock of Blairmore; sisters-in-law Jean Kubica of Claresholm and Eda Evans of Canmore; brother-in-law Milo Marcial of Blairmore; as well as many nieces, nephews and friends.

Polly was born in Bankhead, Alta., to Michael and Teresa Kubica, and moved to Coleman with her family at the age of two.

Except for these few years and a short time during the Second World War, Polly spent her entire life in the Crowsnest Pass, where she met and married her beloved husband, Americo (Mike) Marcial, in 1942.

Polly was a loving, caring wife, mother, grandmother and aunt.

She was a devoted parishioner of Holy Trinity Catholic Church, as well as a member of the Catholic Women’s League. After being introduced to the sport of golf by Americo, she became an avid golfer and spent some of the happiest days of her life at the Crowsnest Pass Golf Course, continuing to play into her 80s.

The family wishes to thank the staff of the Crowsnest Pass Continuing Care Centre, where Polly spent her last four years, for their excellent care and compassion.

The memorial mass was held at Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Church in Blairmore on June 5, 2015, with Father Ben Marino as celebrant. The committal was at the New Blairmore Union Cemetery.
