My Little Corner

When special occasions, like Father’s Day, come around, I sometimes wish I hadn’t chosen to take my life so far from my family and hometown. I’m sure many feel the same thing — a sense of nostalgia and sadness that sneaks in when it’s not possible to make a trip to the place you’d like to be.

I’ve spoken of my dad many times in this column because he’s one of the most important people in my life.

He has, both literally and figuratively, picked me up when a misstep has led to a wipeout. Sometimes with a lecture, other times with no need for one.

He has been a teacher of lessons and a role model for me and for my daughter.

His impact within our family is a little bit different with each of his children and grandchildren.

Recently I came across a three-way frame with a photo in the centre and a poem on either side. The picture is from my high school graduation, with father and daughter holding hands and grinning at one another.

On the left is a poem titled “Saturday, November 30, 1985.” I was a prolific poetry writer in high school, and this particular bit of prose was written when I was 17. I was

trying to sleep after Dad had suffered a heart attack, and I was terrified of losing him.

It wasn’t intended to be shared, but my mom found it and put it in Dad’s sock drawer so he would see it. In the right frame is his written response, called “Tender Heart.”

It’s been 30 years, but the sentiments shared in the poems and photo are as real today as they were then. From him, I have learned the power of words.

Life brings us challenges, and I can honestly say that my responses have been shaped by the lessons learned from my dad.

Thanks to him I am honest, empathetic, community-minded and driven. My personal traits have been shaped through his teachings.

Parenting is an important role and everything we do and say is reflected in our children. This doesn’t end when we reach the age of majority; family love and lessons are with us for a lifetime.

To my dad, and to all in the role of raising children, I wish you a Father’s Day filled with love, laughter and happiness. If you aren’t able to share the day with your kids, know they are with you in spirit.

Crowsnest/Pincher Creek Landfill is cleaning up towns

By Brad Quarin The crusade to clean up Crowsnest Pass and Pincher Creek for the summer is ongoing as the Crowsnest/Pincher Creek Landfill Association offers Service Plus for another year.

With Lundbreck, Twin Butte and Coleman done, Service Plus is running in Blairmore and will go to Hillcrest soon, and then to Pincher Creek during the recycling roundup.

For Service Plus, the landfill provides bins and covers disposal and transportation fees, says Linda Wollman, the landfill office administrator. Usually, the municipality is billed per tonnage in garbage.

The landfill will provide one bin for metals, one for electronics such as old computers or TVs, and a third for regular garbage.

Service Plus is running today in Blairmore from noon to 6 p.m. at 12525 21st Ave. This is followed by Hillcrest’s from Thursday to Saturday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., at 22201 Ninth Ave. In Pincher Creek, Service Plus will run in conjunction with the recycling roundup at Ranchland Mall on Saturday, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Residents of Pincher Creek can take unwanted computers, TVs and paints to the roundup. Others will also be able to set up tables for a reuse fair, in which people can drop off and pick up items.

STEPHANIE, continued from page 3 Last summer, Stephanie had a lemonade stand and made $200 for Water1st. Two years ago, she took part in a penny drive to supply water to poor communities, but for a different group, Free the Children. They gathered $600 in pennies.

Aside from We Day, she got another chance to develop her leadership skills at the Connections program camp, near Cochrane. Stephanie was one of six CCHS students who went to the camp, which also taught students about the environment and multiculturalism.

She was interested in the program because she wanted to learn more about other cultures. A very inspiring presentation was made by Muslim girls at the camp, where the others asked questions and the girls spoke about stereotypes they face, owing to extremists.

The Connections program helped shape her perspective on life, especially in making her think in terms of finding the right solution, rather than convincing others of her viewpoint. It’s a lesson she’s been able to use in life.

In school, Stephanie’s best subject is math. After high school, she will probably go into the sciences.

She has fond memories of all of her children singing in the junior choir back then, under wonderful music teachers.

In addition to physical renovations, there have been “spiritual” changes as the membership has changed, Bev says. Gayle says there’s still a core of longtime members, but others came and went as the community grew and developed.

Still, as a constant, Gayle and Bev feel the people have been what’s great about Pincher Creek United Church.

“Being able to have that spiritual connection with other people, you’re soulfully on your spiritual journey together,” Bev says. She also values the roots and inclusiveness of the church, along with its thrift store.

Harry Taylor, a retired minister from Calgary, joined Pincher Creek United Church in

2000. He remembers the first time he went inside, with the barn wood in the sanctuary reminding him of the Nativity and striking him as a good fit for the town.

Rae Olds joined the local church 10 years ago and also had a good first impression. One lady introduced her to the group immediately and they went for coffee afterwards.

“You feel at home here,” Rae says. Currently, she serves church suppers and works in the thrift shop. The thrift shop has changed in the last 10 years, having been rearranged and painted.

Like those who have been with the Pincher Creek church for longer, Rae and Harry identify the people as one of its strong points. Harry likes that the people of the church volunteer for many different things in the community. Certainly, Pincher Creek United Church has been a community within a community.

Métis in the Mountains to be a Riel good time

People are beginning to ask if and when Métis in the Mountains is happening again, with some calling from northern Alberta to find out.

It’s a sign that the annual festival Roxanne Debroux launched four years ago to share the experience of Métis culture has become ingrained in the area.

The festival will return to Castle River Rodeo Grounds from June 25 to 28.

“Come out and enjoy yourself,” Roxanne says.

“Everybody is welcome. You do not need to be Métis.”

Métis, having both First Nations and European ancestry, are recognized by our constitution as one of Canada’s Aboriginal Peoples.

However, Roxanne was moved to start the festival because many people were asking her who or what the Métis are. The event is indeed a great potential learning experience, as guests will discover the Métis style of music, learn to dance the jig and sew, and throw tomahawks and knives.

Originally the Métis Music and Cultural Fest, the full name is now the Métis in the Mountains Asihawak Festival. Asihawak is a Michif and Cree word for geese flying in formation. “It means we fly together as one,” Roxanne says. “To me, it symbolized working together

as the Métis Nation.”

This year, there will be a few new musicians and some different kinds of crafts at the children’s craft table.

The event was moved to Castle River Rodeo Grounds last year, and the location proved ideal with plenty of room and a relaxed atmosphere.

It is also a central location between Pincher Creek and Crowsnest Pass, the Lions are great hosts and, as an added bonus, it’s funny that the compound looks like a “mini fort,” she says.

Children obviously liked the location, as few were looking at their cellphones during the festival and one even wrote “I love this place” in chalk on the sidewalk.

Another thing from last year that will be brought back is a dramatic re-enactment of part of the trial of Louis Riel, the legendary Métis leader.

Some of the entertainers at the festival will be local, with Lorin Hansen from Crowsnest Pass performing country music with Rene Desjardins from Cowley. Ed Desjardins from Hill Spring will also bring a replica of the Red River cart and will teach canoeing.

The event also benefits from the sponsorship of local businesses Mountain Ink, Highwood Motel and the Crowsnest/Pincher Creek Landfill Association.

1st Crowsnest Pass Girl Guides

Market is open for business The Pincher Pioneer Country Market will be open for business this Friday in the lobby of the town arena.

The day will launch another year for the farmers market, which will be open every Friday, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., until Oct. 2.

Organizer Tracy Glen says this year will feature at least six new vendors, with many regulars returning. The market will offer everything from meat to crocheting and sportsware.

Take a historic journey with Bert Riggall

By Brad Quarin Step into the past with Bert Riggall, Waterton’s historic mountain guide, hunter and naturalist.

Mr. Riggall was also a prolific photographer, and a selection of his work will be exhibited at Waterton Community Centre from June 22 to 25.

“His photographs sort of speak for themselves of his travel in the wilderness,” says Wendy Ryan, vice-president of the Bert Riggall Environmental Foundation.

“He had a love of the land and of the flora and the fauna. And because of his work with his photography and his longtime guiding of guests in the summer and the fall, I think that people are quite passionate about him.”

The photos for the exhibit are being borrowed from Banff ’s Whyte

Museum and Pincher Creek’s Kootenai Brown Pioneer Village.

After Mr. Riggall died in 1959, his family donated many of his photos to museums for preservation. The Whyte Museum has 10,000 Riggall photos and KBPV has 700, Wendy says.

The photos’ quality had been preserved over 100 years, which she thinks is longer than Mr. Riggall would have imagined people would be interested.

Wendy selected 26 pieces for the exhibit — a daunting task, considering the huge number to choose from.

Bellecrest Days promises fun in the sun and under the stars

RIGGALL, continued from page 10 selections based on the locations depicted. She wanted to focus on trail riding in southwestern Alberta and southeastern British Columbia, specifically trails she had taken herself.

Mr. Riggall had taken them in the 1910s and 1920s, travelling by horse and without guides, making sure his glass slides and equipment were protected on the horse. He photographed plants he didn’t know were rare, some found only in Waterton.

“The beauty of it is … these trails are still being used for recreational use,” Wendy says.

Last year, she travelled on one of Mr. Riggall’s trails over six days.

As well, two collages of self-portraits and the Riggall family were selected for display.

The result is a collection of photos that Wendy hasn’t seen exhibited since arriving to the community in 1980. She thanks the museums and local curator Farley Wuth for making this possible.

During an open house on June 24, special guests will explain the photos. These are three of Mr. Riggall’s grandchildren, two other people who knew him, and members of the Bert Riggall Environmental Foundation. The Pincher Creek group was started to run educational workshops and host guest speakers.

The open house runs from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. and will end with the Waterton Biosphere group showing the film Sharing the Range, says foundation president Judy Huntley.

It’s hoped the exhibit will successfully showcase a local figure and the “ingenuity” of his photography, Wendy says. “It’s a historic journey.”

By Brad Quarin An action-packed weekend is planned as Bellecrest Days, an annual celebration shared by Bellevue and Hillcrest, returns to Main Street Bellevue on Friday and Saturday.

“It’s for all,” says Joanie Wanner, secretary of the Bellecrest Community Association, the group that holds the event. This means all ages, and people from outside Hillcrest and Bellevue as well as inside, are welcome and should have a good time.

The festivities kick off at 4 p.m. on Friday with a hike led by the Crowsnest Conservation Society, from Fireman’s Park.

This will be followed by the family movie night at 6:30 p.m., with an Under the Stars theme. Local art classes made the stars that will be hung at the Bellecrest Seniors Centre, where the film Paddington will be played, says Bellecrest Days co-ordinator Krissy Ames. The movie night is free and Joanie encourages whole families to attend.

The Bellevue Legion will also have its usual Friday night supper, but with musical entertainment courtesy of Siegbert and Rose Gail.

Prime time for Bellecrest Days will be Saturday, starting with a pancake breakfast from 8 to 10 a.m. at the Bellevue Legion, for $7 per plate.

The parade comes at 11 a.m., and children are invited to decorate their bikes to win prizes, Krissy says.

Among the games are the high-striker strength contest with a mallet, lassoing, a shooting gallery and a western obstacle course. The toddlers will have a small bounce house.

“The big draw for the kids will be the World of Sports,” Krissy says. It consists of an inflatable, in which children can play baseball, football, soccer and basketball.

Adults will have their own inflatable game with the Money Tunnel, in which a participant will try to catch fake cash blowing around. The coloured X on a bill will give the participant a choice of a prize. Among the prizes are a massage and a round of golf.

Another highlight will be the races, some of which are a little unusual. The cow-milking competition will involve milking a fake cow, and the campers challenge at 1 p.m. will have participants building fires on Main Street.

The bartender races sponsored by the Bellevue Inn will start at 2 p.m., as participants go through an obstacle course carrying glasses of water on trays.

The Bellevue Legion is hosting a comedy night at 8 p.m.

At 9 p.m., the Bellevue Inn will throw a Fun in the Sun Summer Party. People can dress up in shorts, snorkel gear or other summer clothing and enjoy a DJ. “It’s a good way to kick off the summer,” Krissy says.

Hop in the car with your dad this Saturday

By Brad Quarin If Dad likes cruising, the family should consider taking him for a ride this Saturday, right before Father’s Day. The Pincher Creek Legion is holding its first Father’s Day poker run, starting with breakfast from 8 to 11 a.m.

The Legion has breakfasts for Mother’s Day, but hadn’t really done anything for Father’s Day, says sergeant-at-arms Fred White.

So, Legion members brainstormed what they could do to involve dads and families in the community.

Fred has participated in poker runs before, though the Legion hasn’t had one. Generally, these runs are for done for charity.

In this one, families can take any kind of vehicle on a ride with four stops, in Twin Butte, Cowley, Lundbeck and Beaver Mines.

It’s not a race. Instead, participants draw a card from a deck at each stop and prizes are given for the best poker hands once all are back at the Legion.

There will also be a car show in the Legion’s parking lot to showcase antique vehicles, with the best car getting a trophy. Burgers will be on the grill from 3 to 5 that afternoon and there will be cake for everyone.

This poker run will be basic, and they can add to it next year, Fred says.

My dad has always been my greatest teacher — maybe not always my favourite, but my greatest. I’ve grown up watching him strive for success and to be the best father, husband, friend and person possible. He has always pushed me to do the same, to be my best and do my best in everything I do. His sense of morality and his way with words is astonishing and something I’ve always been a bit jealous of, to be honest, because no matter what curve life throws at him he always seems to know what to do and how to handle every situation.

My dad has always been my biggest inspiration. He has always been there for me when I needed him.

Whether I was five years old and had an owie, 16 and needed help with my

homework, or 24 and needed help with my little girl’s attitude, he has always taken the time to love and guide me in every situation. In each and every phase of my life, he found unique ways to teach me and help me become the best version of myself.

Without him I would not be the person or parent that I am today, and for that I will be eternally grateful.

My dad means everything to me because all my life he has always been my everything. I am the luckiest girl alive because one night 25 years ago, when friends knocked on their door and asked, “Are you interested in having a baby girl?” my mom and dad said yes.

Role of police advisory committee defined Pincher Creek town council recently approved terms of reference for a new police advisory committee, and passed a second motion appointing committee members.

These approvals formalize a process for receiving input from the community, and a partnership between the community, the RCMP and local government.

The Town of Pincher Creek and the local RCMP detachment commander recognize the value and benefit of the community policing concept, which enhances the quality of life for residents.

The principal philosophy of the new committee is that “the police are the community and the community are the police,” a philosophy that is also reflected in the RCMP’s mission to provide a safe and secure community through community input. Committee members will not engage in police work but will be available for citizens to approach to provide information or concerns about policing and public safety.

Specifically, the committee will: — Advise the detachment commander on policing priorities identified through community input.

— Keep the commander informed of emerging trends and issues within the community.

— Make recommendations on community policing initiatives, based on identified trends and issues, acknowledging cultural awareness.

— Provide regular reports to town council regarding the progress of the committee.

Every effort has been made to ensure that the police advisory committee reflects the demographics of the community served by the RCMP and provides liaison between council, residents, community groups and the RCMP. All recommendations for membership must be reviewed and approved by the detachment commander and by council.

Currently, the committee roster, as defined in the terms of reference, includes 14 approved permanent member positions and four term member positions.

Community organizations and individuals that wish to appear before council, or to communicate directly on any community policing matter, are encouraged to contact the police advisory committee first for support and input.

Roma leaves behind her children, Patricia Ann Collins of Penticton, B.C., Linda Jayne Collins of Barrie, Ont., and Gary Paul Collins of Calgary; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; her sister, Eileen Mitchell; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Roma was predeceased by her husband, Kenneth George Collins; her granddaughter Suzanne; and her brother-in-law, Jock Mitchell.

UROC gears up for Bootleg Bike Fest and Rumhead Enduro The second annual Rumhead Enduro and Bootleg Bike Fest are about to hit the Crowsnest Pass, and will be bigger and better than ever.

Hosted by the United Riders of Crowsnest, this family-oriented weekend will include a prologue day of spectator-friendly racing at the Pass Powderkeg ski hill on Saturday, July 18. The gravity-based flow trail, Berma-Grin, will be the first stage of the Rumhead Enduro, and the fast and flowy elements of this one-of-a-kind ride will be sure to entertain riders and spectators alike.

The remaining four stages of the Rumhead Enduro course will also be marked and ready to preview on Saturday — that is, if the racers have anything left in them! Following the day’s events, participants are invited to attend a social barbecue, complete with draw prizes and presentations from UROC. After warming up on Stage 1, racers will compete on the remaining four stages of the Rumhead Enduro on Sunday, July 19. The race will begin at 9 a.m. and the course will highlight the epic trails

of the York Creek area. Racers will be treated not only to some amazing terrain, but also to stunning views of the Crowsnest Rockies.

The best part? Enduro-style racing means that only the descents are timed; so, racers can tackle the climbs at a relaxed pace and enjoy the social environment of the event before cranking into gear for the blistering descents.

Meanwhile, as the Enduro takes place, the Bootleg Bike Fest will continue on at Pass Powderkeg with group rides, family events, bike demos, and even a kids camp so that mom and dad can hit the trails on their own.

Whether you want to race, to just check out the trails, or even to volunteer, this community-minded event is all about showcasing the trails and the mountain bike community here in Crowsnest Pass. We hope to see you out for this jam-packed weekend!

Tips and experience for tomorrow’s workers

By Brad Quarin Youth Employment Services is open for the summer, and the community can benefit from the hard work of young people stepping into the job world.

The program, run through Group Group Youth in Pincher Creek, prepares youth for working and helps them find jobs. “[We’re] helping the kids build the skills needed to perform jobs, like communication [and] financial skills,” says Kelsi Byam, the program co-ordinator.

Youth Employment Services is aimed at ages 10 to 24. While children under 12 shouldn’t be working, they can still benefit from the workshops and participate in the fundraisers, Kelsi says.

The focus is on ages 10 to 14, with the program especially recommended for youth getting ready to work and building their work experience.

A child does not need to be a member of Group Group Youth to access Youth Employment Services. The program is available to children in Pincher Creek, Crowsnest Pass and area.

It is funded through Group Group Youth, which offers youth activities and has government support. The program is also supported by service clubs and has fundraisers such as barbecues.

Workshops will begin in July, teaching how to write resumés and cover letters and how to take interviews.

A popular workshop has been the pet-care session at the veterinarian’s clinic. The children learn what the veterinarian does and they love seeing the animals.

In August, they might have a career exploring month, maybe touring the police station, the firehall and Beauvais Lake.

Youth Employment Services also keeps a registry system, where children can sign up and give information about the kinds of jobs they’re looking for. They are then matched up with community members or businesses who have work to do, such as lawn work. It’s mainly “odd jobs” found through the program, Kelsi says.

While Kelsi, a University of Lethbridge student, arrived at Group Group Youth’s centre in May and is in until Aug. 21, she notes the program is available all year.

This summer, Kelsi is in the office Tuesdays to Fridays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and is available on Mondays and Saturdays by appointment. During the rest of the year, a young person can call Group Group Youth.

Food bank thoughts As a volunteer at the Crowsnest Pass Food Bank, I’ve sometimes wondered what a family does if they are given something in a hamper that nobody in the family likes. We fill the hampers with either what is donated locally or what comes out to us from the Calgary Interfaith Food Bank, and seldom know what to expect in the pallet deliveries.

As a recipient of a hand up from the food bank, if you find an item you don’t care for, pop it into a bag and either bring it back the next time you come or take it to one of our drop-off locations: the Bargain Shop, the IGA, the Catholic Church, the Women’s Resource Centre in the Provincial Building — any location convenient for you.

We’d be happy, too, if you check your hamper when you come to pick it up, and at that time remove whatever you can’t use and give it back on the spot. Our hours are Monday and Wednesday from 5 to 7 p.m., and Thursday over the noon hour from 11a.m. to 2 p.m.

We’ve had a few donations left at the door of the food bank, at times we weren’t open, which either froze or were rained on and had to be discarded. This was sad to see because somebody somewhere needed those items and they had to be thrown away.

Thank you to our supporters who donate food items, fresh produce, or money.

Plan your summertime green times

By Brad Quarin Golfers will take to the greens plenty of times this summer, with numerous tournaments planned and groups to benefit.

The Pincher Creek and District Chamber of Commerce is getting the ball rolling on Sunday with its tournament in Pincher Creek. The golfers who have signed up for that event will be supporting junior entrepreneurship activities at the schools and at the chamber’s Discovery Days, says chamber administrator Lieve Parisis.

On June 26, the Crowsnest Pass Golf Club will host the Kathy Allsop Memorial Golf Tournament, an annual event in support of the Crowsnest Pass Health Foundation. Golfers hoping to get into this tournament have until Friday to call organizer Joan Koinberg at 403562-5018.

This year, the foundation is hoping to buy a Lifepak 15, a type of defibrillator to replace the outdated one in the Crowsnest Pass emergency room, Joan says. They hope to raise $23,000, the same amount raised last year.

The event is named for a late nurse and

board member of the health foundation, remembered by Joan as a kind-hearted and generous person.

Pincher Creek also has senior men’s and women’s open tournaments on June 26.

These will be followed by Pincher Creek’s 4x4 Scramble on July 4 and 5, an occasion with a chance to win big prizes. Golf club manager Gord Culham encourages golfers to register as soon as possible, and hopes that Gord Francis and team winning four cars last year will inspire others to join in.

This year, there are hole-in-one prizes of $5,000, $10,000 and $100,000. Registration at www.pinchercreekgolf.com is $550 per team.

On July 6, Pincher Creek will Golf Fore the Cure in an annual tournament to support local breast cancer patients. Organizer Gail Oxtoby says they prefer early registration, which can be done at www.rcgagolfforethecure.ca, also a place to make online donations. This year, organizers hope to exceed last year’s amount raised, $2,716.

While the tournament is often seen as a ladies’ night out, it is also open to men. The

money will support patients with information and programs.

The Pincher Creek Legion’s tournament takes place on July 19, with the deadline to register being the Wednesday before.

Neither Legion membership nor golf skill are necessary, and the entry fee is $35 per individual.

On July 24 and 25, the Ricky Ryp Foundation will hold its annual Rick Rypien Memorial Golf Tournament in Blairmore. Saturday team packages are already sold out, with the foundation selling corporate sponsorships and team packages for the Friday. The event will include a meal, prizes and a silent auction.

The event supports the foundation’s beneficiaries, including those with medical issues or injuries that prevent them from working.
