My Little Corner

Two weekends ago, at the annual general meeting of the Alberta Weekly Newspapers Association, Shootin’ the Breeze was introduced as the newest member of the group.

A mission of AWNA is to encourage community newspaper excellence. They believe people make the difference, and emphasize education as key to personal growth. They also respect and support entrepreneurial spirit.

I’ve toyed with the prospect of becoming a member since our first year of publication, and Shootin’ the Breeze was designed to meet their membership standards with the exception of our front page.

Under AWNA bylaws, front-page advertising is limited to 20 per cent of printable space. This was an issue we needed to contend with if we wished to become members.

Reducing the advertising also meant reducing our weekly income, so there was some risk involved with the decision. In May, we bit the bullet and made this change, and have had nothing but positive comments about the look of the front page with the larger photos. Whew!

As a member, we are required to run what are referred to as the blanket classified ads. I’m sure most are familiar with this type of advertising from other local papers.

This means giving up some precious space, but the trade-off hopefully will be in receiving gov-

ernment and national ad campaigns. If all goes according to plan, this is the benefit that will allow the Breeze to continue to grow.

I recall muttering four years ago, “I hate eightpage papers.” It was summertime when things were slow. Cutting back on pages was necessary, but made it challenging to fit all of the content in. Soon, I grumbled about 12-page papers, then 16-page papers. In 2015, we’ve had 24-page issues, on larger sheets, as a standard.

At this point, 24 pages is not enough to run all our ready material, and presentation suffers due to space restrictions. For example, Brad took some great shots at Bellecrest Days but there is no room for them until next week.

It is my hope that AWNA advertising benefits will allow us to make 32-page papers the norm. It’s an awesome prospect!

As a publisher, the benefits for networking, sharing and learning will be significant.

You’ll notice small changes over the next few weeks and I encourage you to let us know what you think. Our editorial style will not change and our reader’s voices remain most important.

I had an interesting chat with Pat MacInnis the other day about the paper in general and the direction we are taking. She referred to Shootin’ the Breeze as “the little paper that grew.”

Crowsnest water restrictions Effective June 22, water restrictions are in effect to accommodate upgrades to the Crowsnest Pass water and waste-water control systems.

The restrictions prohibit the use of sprinklers and irrigation systems, washing cars at home, or filling private pools and hot tubs.

The watering of gardens will be permitted only if using handheld hosing, watering cans or buckets.

It is anticipated that the work will be completed by 3 p.m. on Friday, June 26, at which time the water restrictions will return to odd/ even lawn watering, as per Bylaw 622-2004.

Exploring the Crowsnest Pass with Paul Zizka

So said famed explorer John Muir over 100 years ago, and today his words continue to ring true.

For those of us lucky enough to have the mountains of the Crowsnest Pass as our backyard, we know all too well their allure. And for adventure photographer Paul Zizka, the Crowsnest Pass proved to be a mecca of opportunity.

“I was extremely impressed,” he said via email. “What a fantastic playground! I am already thinking about the next trip and further exploration.”

The Banff-based photographer hails from

Quebec originally, but his adventurous spirit brought him to the Rocky Mountains, where he has since built an impressive career speckled with numerous award-winning photographs.

Unlike many photographers who are satisfied with a zoom lens, Paul uses his alpine and backcountry skills to navigate technical terrain with his camera equipment so that he can capture lesser-seen landscapes.

In early June, Paul enjoyed a whirlwind two-day visit to the Pass after being contracted

media presence,” explains Sacha Anderson, the marketing and CED co-ordinator for Community Futures. “We want to use these photos to make a big social media push. There’s a lot of power in social media — it’s how people make decisions about the places they want to travel to.”

This was Paul’s first visit to the Crowsnest Pass and, in order to maximize his time here, he was joined by a few adventurous locals who helped guide him to some of the area’s top sites.

Pincher Creek Titans are champs in triathlon

By Brad Quarin Triathlon has taken off in the Pincher Creek area as the local Titan Triathlon Club sent 15 youths to the Kids of Steel competition in Lethbridge in June.

Some were new to the sport, while three had recently been crowned provincial champions in Calgary.

Triathlon is a competition that combines swimming, cycling and running.

Mathias participated in the Kids of Steel triathlon along with his family — Ronan, provincial champion for boys aged 11 to 12; Naoise, provincial champion for seven-year-old girls; and Bronwyn, who cracked the top 15 at the provincials among girls aged 10 to 11.

The Gelbers all enjoy cycling, but the children are too young to enter competitive cycling events in Alberta, Mathias says.

However, cycling is part of triathlon, and they could compete in that. The swimming is

For Mathias, being a provincial champion is “awesome” and not surprising. However, he says you don’t need to be a champion to like triathlon. “All you really have to be able to do is complete it with a smile on your face,” he says.

The provincials were more intense than the later competition in Lethbridge, but Mathias feels it was worth the sweat.

The Gelbers also persuaded Solomon Cooley to try out triathlon last year. He liked the idea of trying something new, and he had experience with competitive swimming. He was one of the athletes who participated in the Lethbridge Kids of Steel competition.

Newcomers to the Titan Triathlon Club are Peter Van Bussel and his sister Amelia. Amelia says the idea of trying the sport came from their mom and dad. To find out what it was like, they ran track at St. Michael’s School and swam at the local pool.

The Van Bussels had a good first tournament in Lethbridge, with Amelia winning a bronze medal in her age group.

The hardest part of the triathlon may not be the swimming, cycling or running, but transitioning from one to the next. Mathias identifies the transition as the only part that takes practice.

Naoise says it’s difficult to get shoes on your wet feet. Solomon says you’re sore getting out of the pool, but have to bike, which tires out the legs before you have to run. For Peter, the hardest part is going from biking to running, also finding his legs tired by then.

The young athletes say they’re planning to stick with the sport. Mathias’s goal is to win the Kids of Steel point series, which requires doing the best in five triathlons in Alberta.

Congratulations to the 2015 Livingstone School kindergarten class, who graduated in June! The students were out and about recently on multiple field trips, learning about the importance of community.

Oh, the places you’ll go!

By Erin Fairhurst Everyone remembers at least one field trip from their days in school.

Whether it was a trip to the zoo or a day at the museum, we all have those tactile memories of the bumpy ride on the school bus or the squashed snack our moms made for us in a brown paper bag.

But Eliza Grose, a teacher at Livingstone School in Lundbreck, wanted to create more than just memories for her students. She wanted to create experiences that would empower them to learn, develop, and embrace their community.

“If kids have the opportunity to experience something that can become an interest, and then that interest flourishes into something bigger, I know they’ve really benefited from that hands-on learning,” she explains.

Eliza and her 15 kindergarten students, as well as a slew of parent helpers, took a whirlwind tour of the community in the last two weeks of April. Each field trip incorporated a component of physical activity, an outdoor experience and a connection-building opportunity within the community.

One of the field trips was a visit to Boston Pizza in Pincher Creek, where students were invited to try their hand at making individual pizzas.

“I never imagined in my wildest dreams taking 15 kids into a restaurant,” Eliza says with a laugh.

The students also visited Harvest Coffeehouse in Pincher Creek, where they made cookies and learned about food safety and the importance of a clean kitchen. At Pincher Creek Co-op, they were given a tour by Cooper the Bear himself, and at Grumpy’s Greenhouse they planted flowers.

continued from page 9 animals and it was a great way of turning an environment that might be stressful for a child into something more familiar and comforting,” says Eliza.

Ultimately, for Eliza, the experience was about teaching students to value their community and to learn about all of the different roles.

“We took a range of trips to appeal to all interests,” she says, adding that the class also visited the library, the fire station, the Parent Link Centre, Beauvais Lake, Beaver Mines General Store and Eliza’s own ranch. “We also wanted to show all of the different things you can do to contribute to your community. The community support that we received is really what made this all possible.”

Experiential learning is a key philosophy for Eliza, and she is already brainstorming for next year. Plans are underway to launch a two-week “forest school” next fall, where students will be exposed to life in the forest and will learn about respect for nature.

In the meantime, as summer break looms, Eliza can reflect on memories of a great year with her class.

“We really did have so much fun,” she says, “and I want to thank everyone who opened their door to us. At the end of the day, everyone just had a content smile on their face during the bus ride home.”

It was an exciting year for the Crowsnest Pass Music Festival.

The number of participants grew, it was the first year for the non-competitive format and the adjudicators were exceptional in providing a very positive learning experience for both participants and teachers.

Six participants were sent to the Alberta Provincial Music Festival last month. They had a wonderful learning experience and performed well.

Just a note on how talented our participants are: in the 2014 Provincial Music Festival Classical Voice, Rachel Park placed second out of 120 participants in Alberta. That’s the start of world-class talent.

On the menu: a review of Trappers Mountain Grill

By N. Carraway Sometimes those of us who live in or near the mountains take Waterton for granted. It’s easy to forget the spectacular beauty and charm of this tiny town. We were reminded recently when we headed there to enjoy one of the season’s first truly warm afternoons.

After strolling the scenic lakeshore and village shops, we stopped into Trappers Mountain Grill for a casual lunch.

Located on Main Street with one of the townsite’s few parking lots, this prime location has had many incarnations over the years. Its current one is touted as “BBQ inspired by the Deep South.”

I’m not sure the Deep South features such Canadiana as bear-themed tableware, antlers and red plaid flannel, but it’s exactly what you expect in Waterton. As incongruous as it appears, it hardly mattered to the seemingly satisfied lunch crowd. If tourists want red and white gingham, geraniums in mason jars and well-used smokers, they’ll need to go to Louisiana or Texas, not the Canadian Rockies.

Seating consists of booths and a mix of tables

and chairs with heavy wood furniture that completes the rustic mountain-chic ambience.

Our young server, who was extremely pleasant and knowledgeable about the food, seemed a little bored with the relaxed pace of the early-season lunch crowd and looked for reasons to keep coming back to our table.

I only hope she can maintain the pace of attention once the true tourist season begins.

Despite my arteries crying out in protest, we started with the onion bloom — a large batter-fried white onion, cut and fanned to resemble petals on a flower. Made famous by the popular Outback Steakhouse chain, the dish is sometimes breaded as well.

Unlike others we’ve tried, the chef at Trappers had a light touch with the batter and the onion was served with a ranch dipping sauce that left no doubt we were in dangerous calorie territory.

It was far too much for two people, but would serve a table of six well as an appetizer.

Not surprisingly, Trappers features a heavy meat menu with fresh hickory-smoked ribs, chicken wings, steaks, bison, pulled pork and, of

course, burgers. We were pleased to see that they also offered a salmon and veggie burger as well.

My wife had the veggie burger, which came with french fries and a side of coleslaw. She wasn’t offered another choice in place of the fries, which was a bit unusual, and said a healthier alternative would’ve been nice.

The burger was tasty and came on a gluten-free bun loaded with lettuce, tomato, onions, and mushrooms, but the coleslaw was bland and the fries were … well, just fries. Nothing exceptional there.

I decided to go for the fish and chips, which also came with a serving of fries. There were two generous pieces of fish, nicely battered but a bit too heavy on the grease for my liking.

Given the price, Trappers is a little steep for its casual dining fare, but for all its kid-sister-of-Banff image, Waterton is still geared to entice tourists to open their wallets.

If the restaurant doesn’t manage to part you with your money, an adjoining gift shop might manage to do so.

Dorothy Ileene Clark

Nata Milvain

It is with extreme sorrow that the family of Dorothy Ileene Clark announce her passing on May 17, 2015, at 72 years of age, a month short of her 73rd birthday, and a very special day, as it was both her sister Verna’s and grandson Kyle’s birthday.

Dorothy was born on June 21, 1942, to Wilf and Eileen Clemens of Pincher Creek and was the second oldest of eight children.

She was married to her loving husband, Butch, for 46 years before he was tragically taken from us in 2009.

Dorothy’s greatest love was her family and especially her grandchildren. She was a mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend to many, and touched so many lives in such a positive and loving way.

Many people will remember her from over the 20 years that she and Butch owned and operated the Petro Canada in Marysville and Jim Bob’s Mini Mart.

She loved baseball and hockey and especially the road trips for Dylan’s hockey, where she cheered him and his team on and made many friends along the way. Dorothy will always be remembered for how hard she worked and how she gave so unselfishly to everyone she loved and cared for. She will also be remembered for the beautiful Christmas display that she did every year.

She was a “grandma” to every one of her grandchildren’s friends and absolutely loved it when they called her Grandma.

Dorothy moved into her dream home/acreage in Gold Creek, where she loved riding horses and gardening. She had two beautiful gardens as well as her rock garden, where she spent endless hours making the property look so beautiful and spent hours riding horses and swimming in her pool.

Dorothy is survived by her daughters, Carmon (Regan) and Paula (Roy); grandchildren Kyle, Shayna, Cheyenne, Rylee and Dylan; brother Dave Clemens (Carol) and sisters Judy (Howard) Christiansen, Dave (Carol) Clemens, Diane (Don) Guilford, Verna (Randy) Marsh, Rhonda Shepansky, and sister-in-law Pat Clemens; plus numerous nieces and nephews.

Dorothy was predeceased by her husband, Butch; her parents, Wilf and Eileen Clemens; and her brothers Wilf and Jack Clemens.

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Nata Milvain on June 16, 2015, at the Crowsnest Pass Health Care Centre at the age of 89. She left this world surrounded by her loving family.

Natalie Annette Milvain was born on Oct. 1, 1925, to proud parents Rosie and Joseph Coccioloni in Coleman. Along with her siblings, she was raised to appreciate life’s many blessings and to never take anything, or anyone, for granted.

When Nata met Charles (Doodles) Milvain, she met her soulmate. Never was there a more perfect couple! The two married and proceeded to start a family of their own. Together, they raised three wonderful children in a home filled with joy and love.

Nata was a caregiver and a gracious hostess who took care of everyone who crossed her path. Whether you were a family member, a friend or a workman plowing her road, you were always welcome in Nata’s home and you never left hungry! Her kind, generous spirit inspired her to volunteer much of her time at the Pincher Creek extended care facility, where she brought cheer to the residents for many years.

When not happily preparing meals or taking care of someone, Nata also found great pleasure in tending to her huge gardens and walking the magnificent hills surrounding her home with Benji.

When one thinks of Nata, they think of her unparalleled ability to love and, of course, her unparalleled style and grace. She was truly beautiful both inside and out.

Let me live in the house by the side of the road and be a friend to man.

Fish derby awards Seniors and people with disabilities from Pincher Creek, Crowsnest Pass and Lethbridge braved the rain to attend the Bobby Burns Fish Derby last week.

The Pincher Creek Legion holds the annual derby at Bobby Burns Fish Pond, an artificial pond owned by the municipal district.

Among the disabled participants, Darren Sorge won the award for largest fish, while Sean Poole took the prize for smallest catch.

Bob Braner won the senior men’s award for largest fish, and Philis Gerlitz claimed the same honour in the senior women’s category.

Awards for oldest fisherman and fisherwoman went to Al Kerscher and Mae Gaetz.

Organizers give special thanks to all volunteers.

New beginnings are needed No longer can Canadians pretend war was never fought on our soil. Aboriginal victims who have been speaking to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission over the past six years tell a compelling story. Our chief justice speaks of a planned attempt to wage “cultural genocide” against Canada’s First Nations peoples.

For seven generations (until 1996), those families were forced to surrender their children to state-run residential schools, under the guise of giving them an education. At least 6,000 never found their way back home. Any details about these deaths and disappearances are still not available for study.

Broken though aboriginal cultures may be, as the victims tell stories about their pain and their

humiliations we find a depth of pride and leadership that is awesome.

On the sidelines, too, are many dedicated educators who never recognized the true objectives of the program in which they taught.

Personally, I think of the special elders who nurtured and enriched my life. The life of each was harsh because of prejudicial treatment. But they pulled themselves out of abusive situations and chose to be strong cultural mentors.

When they were in my home and when I was in their homes, our time together was precious.

Their quiet dignity and accumulated wisdom humbled me.

The TRC report has been delivered with that same aura of pride and poise. There is a sense of

quiet confidence that the relationship between our peoples can be reset. It can’t all be accomplished in the immediate future. But time, education and goodwill can bring healing and usher in a more complete way of being.

Olive Dickason reminded us a decade ago, “Canada’s confederation may be young, but it has components that are ancient.”

Wisdom and truth can bring about reconciliation. Wouldn’t it be great if June 2, 2015, could be remembered as a date of new beginnings on our nation’s calendar?

Summer comes early at Tim Horton Ranch

By Brad Quarin Three local girls will be on their way to the Tim Horton Children’s Ranch in Kananaskis Country on Thursday, thanks to Tim Hortons and its Camp Day campaign.

Morgan Pinkerton from Crowsnest Pass and Janelle Myles and Zoe Arnot from Pincher Creek are this year’s lucky campers.

“You’ll have a great time there,” says Morgan’s big sister, Rachelyn, who went two years ago. “It was a pretty good experience.”

Tim Hortons in Blairmore and Pincher Creek participated in the annual Camp Day campaign, in which donations are accepted and coffee sales go to sending a child to camp. The program benefits children who might not otherwise have the opportunity to go.

At Pincher Creek’s Canyon School, principal Carole Goodreau thought camp would be a good opportunity for Zoe and Janelle. Both girls are in Grade 6 there, and neither has previously gone to camp.

Word that she might be going came as a surprise to Zoe, who didn’t ask for the trip. She was very happy and excited when she learned she would be going.

Janelle is also excited, but admits she’s a little nervous because it will be her first time camping.

Morgan is more jittery about the trip, as she will be meeting many new people. However, Rachelyn is reassuring her that it will be a lot of fun.

A Grade 5 student at Isabelle Sellon School, Morgan was selected as a camper by principal Paul Pichurski. Two years ago, she went to a similar camp

called Our Lady Queen of Peace Ranch in Bragg Creek. She has also camped around Crowsnest Pass with her family.

As to what the girls are expecting at the camp, Janelle says “just lots of fun.” She has seen the brochure, which indicates that they will stay in cabins and that there will be horseback riding, zip lining and rafting at the camp. This would be her first time rafting.

For Zoe, this will be her first time riding a horse and trying her hand at archery. She knows her friend Janelle will be there, and also expects to make new friends.

Morgan has had a lot of fun rafting before, and this may be her first time on rapids.

Rachelyn fondly remembers other experiences at camp, such as rock climbing and taking a scenic route in the mountains, making s’mores by the fire and sleeping in teepees.

Her favourite memory is whitewater rafting, with four people to each boat. Rachelyn and her fellow rafters named theirs the Cosmo Express and went through mildly fast waters for a whole morning.

The campers also made bracelets with beads earned for leadership, teamwork and environmental awareness. Rachelyn is still Facebook friends with some of her fellow campers.

She felt honoured to be one of only two youths from Crowsnest Pass to go to camp that year. Morgan and Rachelyn’s mom says she also feels honoured to have two daughters selected for camp.

Janelle and Zoe thank their principal and Tim Hortons for this opportunity.

By Brad Quarin Parents facing the age-old conundrum of how to keep their children interested in reading during the summer will be glad to know that summer reading clubs are back at the local libraries.

The TD Summer Reading Club starts at Crowsnest Community Library and Pincher Creek and District Municipal Library in July, with the new theme of Play.

“We mostly want kids to explore and have fun,” says Kiana Miskulin, who is helping with the program at Crowsnest Community Library. The program is sponsored by TD Bank Group.

This year, young children won’t be having all the fun, as reading clubs will be open to teens and adults as well.

In Crowsnest Pass, the program for preschool children starts at 10 a.m. on July 7 and the program for ages seven to 12 starts at 10 a.m. on July 8. Kiana says the library is flexible if a family wishes to attend both.

In Pincher Creek, the program for students in grades 1 to 4 runs from 1:30 to 3 p.m., from July 13 to Aug. 18.

Janice Day, manager of the Pincher library, sees the Play theme as very broad, with the library choosing to focus on five aspects. These are sports, animals, science, gardens, western play and Lego, with plenty of games and crafts.

Participants will obtain a summer reading kit containing a logbook, stickers, pencils and other supplies to track reading hours.

Kiana says Crowsnest Community Library will explore the Play theme with games, songs, crafts, outside activities and sports. The whole program is free.

Learning is a lifelong endeavour, and Janice says the Pincher Creek library is also working on three activities for all ages, such as a videoconference.

Teens and adults can also join their own reading clubs, thanks to the Lethbridge Public Library and Chinook Arch Regional Library System.

The teen summer reading club is all online, and teens can go to the Crowsnest Pass or Pincher Creek libraries to join. By tracking their reading, teens have a chance to win a Kobo Arc 7 tablet.

Adults can pick up reading bingo tickets at the libraries. By filling these out, adults could also win a Kobo Arc 7.

Readers should also keep in mind that library cards at Crowsnest Community Library, and for anyone under 18 at Pincher Creek and District Municipal Library, are free.
