My Little Corner Wow, it’s hot out there! Western Canada has been riding a heatwave this past week with many areas setting records for high temperatures.

Thunderstorms and hail have accompanied the heat in many areas, with lightning strikes leading to wildfires.

Alberta, British Columbia and Saskatchewan are struggling with about 120 fires burning in each province.

As I’m writing this Monday evening, there is a severe thunderstorm watch for southern Alberta and there were some good boomers around supper time. Temperatures should be in the normal range for the middle of the week, but will be high again over the weekend.

We all know better, but every year there are stories of children, seniors and animals being left in cars.

I had some time to kill Sunday evening so did a little experiment. My vehicle was parked in the shade and the outside temperature was 30 degrees Celsius. I ran the air conditioner until my arms were covered in goose bumps, then shut the car off and waited. I was uncomfortably warm within two minutes. My mouth was tacky by the time five minutes had passed, and at 10 minutes my breathing was laboured and I was very uncomfortable.

Because I was in the shade, this in no way replicates a vehicle parked under midday sun in a parking lot.

I took a drink of water and a puff from my inhaler, ran the air conditioner again, rolled the front windows down two inches and waited. The stages were the same and having the windows down extended each stage by about a minute. A bumblebee joined me via the open

With both windows down all the way and a nice breeze passing through for the third test, my comfort time doubled. I was, however, chased from the vehicle again — this time by a massive dragonfly.

I tried the back seat with both front windows down and found the air really didn’t circulate much at all in the back. By the time 10 minutes had passed, I was done.

The moral of the story? Even in the shade, being left in a vehicle quickly becomes unbearable for an adult.

This happens much faster for children and pets.

The other day I burned the back of my legs on my leather car seat. This is worth noting as well. We also need to consider seat belts and car seat buckles, which heat up quickly.

Running into the store “for a minute” almost always takes longer than that. Be smart in the heat — take your kids inside with you and leave your pets at home.

If you see a child or animal in distress, note the vehicle make, model, licence plate and the time, and call 911 or local humane authorities. If you must leave the scene, have someone else keep an eye on the situation.

Livingstone Range School Division’s new chair and vice-chair were elected at the June 23 board organizational meeting. The outgoing chair, Martha Ratcliffe, has completed three years in the position and is succeeded by Bradley Toone.

Mr. Toone became a trustee in 2013 and represents Ward 1 (Nanton, Claresholm, Stavely and Granum). Mr. Toone served as vice-chair for the past school year.

Shannon Scherger is the new vicechair. Ms. Scherger lives in Pincher Creek and represents Ward 3 (Pincher Creek-Fort Macleod). She was elected to the board of trustees in 2010 and previously served as vice-chair during 2012-2013 and 2013-2014.

Livingstone Range School Division has a seven-member board, with trustees representing three wards. The division has 14 schools and 12 Hutterite colony schools in southwestern Alberta.

SoulFest will rock Twin Butte countryside this weekend

By Brad Quarin Twin Butte will have soul this weekend as Twin Butte General Store presents SoulFest, a chance to take in some tunes and camp out with family and friends.

Tickets are still available at the store and can be obtained at the gates, with the event taking place on property down Spread Eagle Road. It can take 500 people, says store owner Jeny Akitt.

After people set up camp at noon on Saturday, the music and dancing will start at 2 p.m.

Seven artists — Ryland Moranz, Devon Coyote, Freak Motif, Whiskey Sheiks, Carolyn Mark, the Weber Brothers and Ridley Bent — from places such as Fort Macleod, Victoria and Toronto, will play a wide variety of music. They cite rock, country, folk, pop and more as specialties.

For dinner, Indian tacos will be served

by Twin Butte General Store, and Jeny asks everyone to bring salads and dessert, as well as their own beverages.

Tents and trailers can be taken to the event to camp out. Breakfast will be served the next morning before people head out.

The music, dinner and breakfast are all included in the price of the ticket — $60 per person, or free for children under 12.

This is the ninth year for Twin Butte’s SoulFest. Jeny recalls starting the event with musician Joe Cunningham, who wanted to get his band together and have an excuse to party. The event grew bigger with time, as more bands were added and the current venue was selected.

Darcy’s Nature Walk for Mental Wellness took place at Fireman’s Park in Bellevue on June 13, raising $9,000. Organizers also paid tribute to longtime member Lawrence Rosia, who recently passed away.

A walk does the community good

By Tom Gillespie “Please take time to enjoy the scenery and remember why we’re all here,” Randi Rinaldi told a crowd of over 300 waiting to take part in Darcy’s Nature Walk for Mental Wellness at Fireman’s Park in Bellevue on June 13.

A heavy downpour just 24 hours before the event did nothing to dampen the enthusiasm of walkers, many of whom return for the walk year after year.

Over the five-kilometre trail, they were treated to sunshine and spectacular views of the beautiful Crowsnest Pass. A shorter route through the streets of Bellevue was also available.

Crowsnest Pass Health Foundation is a partner with the Rinaldi family in the annual walk, which raises funds for local mental-health programs.

Thanks to the $9,000 raised at this year’s walk, a mental-health first-aid course will be held this fall in Crowsnest Pass. The course enables early detection of warning signs that may indicate risks to mental health. It will be offered free of charge to health-care providers and anyone in contact with people at risk for mental health issues.

Darcy Rinaldi, Randi’s mother, grew up in Crowsnest Pass and was an active member of the community. In December 2007, Darcy unexpectedly died

from suicide. Darcy’s family organized the first walk in 2008, with her in mind, to increase awareness about the importance of maintaining positive mental health.

A 2003 study by Dr. Ping Qin found that a family experiencing a suicide is about 3.5 times more likely than the general population to experience another suicide of an immediate family member. Sadly, the Rinaldi family suffered a second tragic loss when Darcy’s son, Kelly, also died from suicide in 2013.

The walk continues to honour the memory of both Darcy and Kelly.

According to the Canadian Mental Health Association, a commonly held misconception is that people don’t recover from mental illness. In fact, people who experience mental illness can and do work, volunteer, or contribute their unique skills and abilities to their communities. Even people who experience long-term mental illnesses can learn to manage their symptoms and get back to their goals.

The Faces of Mental Health program, funded by Crowsnest Pass Health Foundation with Nature Walk proceeds, aims to dispel myths about mental illness.

DARCY’S NATURE WALK, continued from page 5 Health Centre and other sites in the community during Mental Health Month in May. “The fact local people are willing to have their faces in displays encouraging more open talk about mental health really helps reduce the stigma,” says Willie Chorney, a foundation trustee. “I used to hide that my father had mental-health issues when I was young, but things have changed a lot since then, and people are beginning to realize it’s nothing to be embarrassed about.”

The Canadian Mental Health Association also says regular physical activity improves psychological well-being, reducing depression and anxiety. Tactics like joining an exercise group

or a gym can reduce loneliness by connecting you with a new set of people sharing a common goal.

Darcy’s Nature Walk funds were used to present Yoga for Wellness classes and a Pedometer Challenge in 2014.

“People really enjoyed the challenge,” Willie says. Not only did they increase their activity levels, but “it was also a great way to get out and make new friends, which is so important to mental health.”

Teacher and students get a close shave at Canyon School

By Brad Quarin Getting a haircut is rarely as extraordinary an experience as it was for a teacher and four students last week at Canyon School in Pincher Creek.

The Cut Cann’s Hair event featured the shaving of Grade 4 teacher Courtney Cann and students Jayce Draper, Shawn Hammond, Regan Kuzyk and Rubie Lou. This followed a campaign that raised $5,431 for the Alberta Cancer Foundation, for cancer prevention and research.

Courtney started growing her hair three years ago, intending to donate it. This was something on her bucket list.

Her reasons for donating became more personal after a friend’s wife, Jocelyn, passed away last February due to cancer. Courtney had only met Jocelyn once, but she says they shared a bond and that Jocelyn inspired her.

With a goal to raise $5,000, Courtney sold tickets for a chance to cut some of her hair, students sold bracelets and four brave youths also

agreed to be shaved.

In raising money to have their hair shaved, Rubie brought in $103, Shawn raised $120 and Jayce brought in a whopping $1,001.50. Regan raised $400 and, when she realized her hair had grown long enough, also donated two locks.

School spirit was high, and at the end, Courtney asked every student to imagine a child and how happy he or she would be to receive a needed wig.

Get a taste of C.N.P. cuisine

By Brad Quarin What does Crowsnest Pass taste like?

For a fourth year, local restaurants and other businesses will be offering samples of their yummy products at the Taste of Crowsnest food festival on July 16. Aside from showcasing Crowsnest Pass cuisine, the festival has the added benefit of raising money for the Boys and Girls Club.

“It’s always been one of the most successful fundraisers for the Boys and Girls Club,” says organizer Penny Warris.

New this year is the timing of the festival. It was previously associated with Rum Runner Days and then the Doors Open and Heritage Festival.

However, this year it occurs the same week as Sole Survivor and the Rumhead Enduro. Penny says the new date

simply works best for the participants.

This year will see nine diverse vendors, offering foods, coffee and liquor.

You can buy a $25 ticket at Black Rock Pizza or Stone’s Throw Cafe prior to the event, or at the door for $30. This will give you 10 taste tickets to obtain samples from vendors, after which an additional taste ticket costs $1.

The money raised from the event will go to Boys and Girls Club programs, mainly after-school programs at Horace Allen School and Isabelle Sellon School. These programs are aimed at students from kindergarten to Grade 6, giving them new experiences and activities from the end of the school day to 5:30 p.m.

Taste of Crowsnest runs from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Blairmore Elks Hall.

Show your vehicle on a world stage this weekend

By Brad Quarin Show and shines have been big in the Pincher Creek and Crowsnest Pass area, so it’s fitting that Pincher Creek will host an international show and shine on Saturday.

The Southern Alberta Antique and Classic Auto Club will be rolling in for the 54th International Show and Shine, taking place at Heritage Inn from 1 to 4 p.m.

This is the first time Pincher Creek has hosted the International Show and Shine, says club member Mike Yakubowski. It’s considered international because both Canadians and Americans participate, and the location rotates between Canada and the United States. Last year it was in Missoula, Mt., and in 2016 it will likely be in Edmonton.

The event has been close to home at least once before, having been in Lethbridge in 2005.

Pincher Creek was chosen because there is plenty to do in the area. After

registering on Thursday, members will tour the area on Friday.

One group will drive to Crowsnest Pass to see Leitch Collieries, the Bellevue Underground Mine and the Frank Slide.

Another group will cruise to the Pincher Creek Hutterite Colony.

Guests will also be encouraged to do some shopping while in town.

They will receive passports from the Pincher Creek and District Chamber of Commerce, and can collect a stamp for entering any of 28 participating businesses and another for a purchase.

Afterwards, they can submit their stamps for draws for prizes, says chamber administrator Lieve Parisis.

After a tour to Heritage Acres on Saturday morning, the show and shine will start.

Anyone can exhibit a vehicle at the show and shine, as long as they go to Heritage Inn and register at 12:30 p.m.

There are no prizes for people who simply take their vehicles to the event.

Rock ’n’ roll concert benefits music students

There was much fun to be had, and music to be heard, at the Groves Music year-end concert.

The second annual rock ’n’ roll benefit concert attracted a full house to the Elks Hall on June 14.

Audience members were treated to an array of musical selections, including two ensemble pieces: “Eleanor Rigby” by the Beatles and “Disarm” by Smashing Pumpkins.

Money raised from the concert goes towards scholarships for students wishing to attend music camps this summer, including Turtle Mountain Music Camp, which will take place Aug. 13 to 16 in Crowsnest Pass.

Sole Survivor to debut new course

By Erin Fairhurst Registration is open for the Sole Survivor foot race, and this year organizers have made some changes that promise to put a spring in your step.

“We have changed the course to a trail race,” says Sasha Harriott, a member of the organizing committee. “Racers will no longer have to deal with traffic or pavement.

Instead they’ll get to enjoy the trails and experience what we have right here in our backyard.”

Trail running is growing in popularity as runners find that venturing off the road not only improves the view, but is easier on their joints as well. For many, the cushioned trail is a welcome reprieve from the repetitive pound-

ing that comes with running on pavement.

“It’s really just a wonderful way to explore,” says Sasha, who is an avid trail runner. “The Sole Survivor is a good chance to run with other people so that you don’t have to worry about being on the trail alone.”

The race takes place the evening of Friday, July 17, and starts at Pete’s Park in Blairmore. Racers can choose a distance of two, five or 10 kilometres, and start times will be staggered, beginning at about 7 p.m.

The course showcases the scenic trails of the Pass Powderkeg trail network, and Sasha says the event is a great opportunity for runners who have shied away from the trail to take their running to the next level.

“There aren’t many introductory trail races out there, especially ones with shorter distance options,” she says.

A post-race social at Pete’s Park will feature draw prizes and a taco bar. First-place male and female winners will take home a pair of Brooks running shoes, a prize sure to inspire them to keep hitting the trail.

Aboriginal culture showcased through art and dance

By Brad Quarin Local aboriginal heritage was recognized with pride last week as our area celebrated National Aboriginal Day. In the Piikani Nation, Child and Family Services organized a community powwow that ran Friday and Saturday.

At Waterton Lakes National Park, First Nations dancers performed their customary dances, exhibiting the tiny-tots snake dance and the fancy-shawl dance.

In Pincher Creek, Napi Friendship Centre celebrated aboriginal culture with its first Aboriginal Art Show and Sale, held in partnership with the Pincher Creek Allied Arts Council.

“Some people can’t believe it, because this has never happened before,” said Dianna Gray, executive director of the Napi Friendship Centre, at the art show’s opening reception. “For a new beginning, I think this is a great baseline.”

Dianna has worked on aboriginal art shows and sales before, but never in Pincher Creek. She arrived at the Napi Centre last November and brought the idea with her.

The centre found artists through social media and the old-fashioned way, word of mouth.

James Van Leeuwen, president of the Allied Arts Council, was impressed with the results. “[We’re] broadening the focus of Allied Arts activities to include aboriginal community members and their creative enterprises,” he says.

The Aboriginal Art Show and Sale featured Blackfoot works from the Piikani Nation and Blood Reserve, along with art by other

aboriginal peoples.

Visitors saw paintings, sculptures, ink work, drums, beadwork and more.

Jason Plain Eagle, from the Piikani Nation, brought art by his late father, Nelbert Little Mustache.

Nelbert painted and made crafts with hides, and taught Jason how to work with woods before passing away three years ago. Jason also brought his mom’s beadwork.

Blood Tribe member Orlando Callinglest brought his sculptures and bronzes, having produced art for 35 years.

Willis Iron Shirt, from the Piikani Nation, displayed wonderful pieces, explaining that he creates them starting with pencil, outlining in ink, and then adding detail and colour.

The art show was a success, and this could be just the beginning of a deeper look at aboriginal culture.

“We’re looking forward to exploring every opportunity,” James says.

Boys and girls feed the Pass

Having made its home at Pete’s Park in Blairmore this summer, the Crowsnest Pass Boys and Girls Club is getting down on the ground to help grow a garden.

The children are allying with the Crowsnest Pass Gardening Club to build a community garden in the park, which will supply healthy food to the Crowsnest Pass food bank. Whether the youngsters would be interested in this task was put to the test in the first session in June.

“They had a blast,” says Karey Lee Watanabe, program director for the Boys and Girls Club. She was a little surprised herself that all of the children showed such enthusiasm. “It was amazing.”

There were 19 children working on the garden that afternoon, mainly from grades 1 to 5. The boys and the girls all showed interest in the craft, with one boy establishing himself as the club’s top dandelion puller.

Karey says the club also did some work on a community garden last year. “It’s really good for kids to learn about gardening,” she says. With such an activity, the children learn to grow their own food, eat healthy and make donations, in this case to the food bank.

As rewards for their labour, the children will also get to take some of their veggies home.

The skills were taught by gardening club members Barbara van Vierssen Trip, Toni Jackson and Lorraine Halton.

Toni found the children to be enthusiastic learners, all excited and taking turns to plant a tomato. She feels this is a great partnership because it can create future gardeners, and, being based in Pete’s Park, they can easily keep track of how their plants are growing. The gardening club has been sending different volunteers to the garden every day to water it.

The gardening club had some fun games for the little gardeners, including some improv as children acted out how a seed grows, Karey says. They will see more of the different stages of growth for real in the next two planting sessions, scheduled for July 8 and 15.

This year, the children planted more of a variety of foods, she says. They are growing tomatoes, potatoes and chives, and are also learning tasks such as weeding, watering and digging.

Karey isn’t sure how many of the children had prior experience gardening, but hopes some take away an interest in the activity.

Sinister 7 Ultra attracts racers from near and far The Sinister 7 Ultra is in its eighth year, and continues to test the strength, endurance and willpower of runners from around the world.

For many, the 100-mile (161-kilometre) race is the pinnacle of extreme running. With over 5,680 metres of elevation gain through some of the most rugged and remote terrain in Alberta’s Rocky Mountains, those who are unprepared are left humbled.

The Sinister 7 Ultra, set this year for July 11 and 12, has been selected as the Association of Canadian Ultramarathoners’ 100-mile national championship race for 2015, which is another draw for soloists.

“It’s an honour to have our race represent the nation for these championships,” says race director Brian Gallant. “It means that the female and male winners will be crowned as the top 100-mile runners in Canada.”

We also continue to offer an option for teams of two to seven members, each competing on the seven stages of the course. The course takes runners on several different routes through the backcountry

around Crowsnest Pass, each featuring a different peak or highlight of the area.

The race attracts over 1,400 registrants annually, and this year we are welcoming runners from across North America, Europe and South America, and from as far away as Japan. Many are drawn by the reputation of the race, but most come simply for the unique challenge and the stunning scenery of Crowsnest Pass.

Even though the race has attained worldwide recognition, the organizers are most excited about the number of local and regional soloists who have stepped up this year.

“I feel like we’ve helped inspire local athletes to try something bigger,” says Brian. This year the race has five Crowsnest Pass soloists, with others coming from Sparwood, Fernie and Pincher Creek.

St. Henry’s looks fantastic!

A neighbour drove into my yard a while ago; she had just stopped at St. Henry’s Church and was delighted by the appearance of the church and the grounds.

A cleanup crew accomplished miracles both inside and outside the church. The windows were washed, new curtains were sewn, and the building was “freed” of its winter flies. Outside, grass was cut, trees were trimmed, some touch-up painting took place — and the results are definitely to be shared. So, we are including some photos of the finished grounds and of the weary crew of workers.

Thanks so much to those who came and helped on June 6. We were a small crew but we certainly accomplished the work of many.
