My Little Corner While it’s been years since I’ve been to one, I’ve always been a fan of outdoor music festivals.

I hoped to make it to SoulFest, and was disappointed that, again, it didn’t work out this year. The annual event is run by Jeny and Phil Akitt of the Twin Butte Country General Store and Waterton Lakes Opera House. Both venues are well known for the variety of great musical acts that complement their menus.

Last weekend I was able to take in a day at the South Country Fair, held at Fort Macleod. A fellow who introduced himself only as the former mayor of the event said, “This is a place where folk music meets rock and roll.” He nailed it with that statement.

The lineup was excellent. If one band didn’t suit your personal taste, you could check out the other stage.

Many acts who took to the stage have also played at Twin Butte or Waterton.

NQ Arbuckle’s lead singer mentioned Phil and Jeny, their venues and SoulFest several times during the band’s performance. That’s a big compliment.

For quite some time, a 30-something woman danced alone in front of the main stage. She was captivating to watch. Her

It was a great place for people-watching too — there were bikinis, kilts, handlebar moustaches, dreadlocks, tattoos, piercings galore, and stilts sported by folks of all ages.

The grounds were ample with two performance stages, an assortment of food trucks with reasonable prices, awareness sessions, a variety of vendors, river access, a playground, camping and good security.

There wasn’t a cloud in the sky or a mosquito to be found. I thoroughly enjoyed the day, listening to musicians tell their stories. Some were familiar, but most were new to me.

I chose to spend the late-evening sets right in front of the stage, so can’t complain about being jostled a little or that I came home with spilled beer in my hair.

It was a great time and I’ll definitely go again – after I have a chance to check out SoulFest, a little closer to home.

There’s a great lineup of summer festivals yet to come. Remember that our online calendar has details for events listed in print.

Update on the building formerly known as Foothills Community Church The building formerly known as Foothills Community Church, located just south of Vista Village in Pincher Creek, is now owned by the Alberta Conference of Mennonite Brethren Churches. It was graciously released by the congregation in hopes that it would remain open to the community.

We plan to do a good job of that until such time that the dream of a new church plant can be realized. Currently, the conference is thrilled to be able to provide a temporary home for St. Michael’s School while they are in renovating their facilities. This seems like a wonderful way to contribute to the community.

Rentals will still be available after school hours and on weekends. Please call Carrie Cooley at 403-627-5402 or 403-632-7191 to inquire about using the facilities. If you have further questions regarding the use of the building, please contact the Mennonite Brethren office in Calgary at 403-256-3211.

Tyler says they feel the Kananaskis Pro Rodeo is a great event. Scotiabank also helped sponsor it last year and numerous times before. The money will help with the cost of next year’s rodeo, which can be pricey in obtaining stock and the arena.

KATE PUNDYK, continued from page 3 The trip was a definite learning experience on the migrant worker industry, with a goal to find out more about Hong Kong’s domestic helpers. In travelling to Indonesia, she would meet people who were affected by the industry.

The industry proved to be more complicated than she thought, not entirely a negative thing. For many Indonesians who had migrated to work as domestic helpers, it was a necessary move, as they saw no alternatives.

The group learned about the difficulties and abuse faced by domestic helpers, with one woman weeping while recalling the neglect she faced in Hong Kong. “At that moment, I could really see the human implications of the largely under-regulated industry,” Kate says.

Many former migrants in Indonesia formed a bond over their experiences, in what she calls “a rare sort of beautiful camaraderie.”

“It was awe-inspiring,” she says. “Being able to learn from them, and simultaneously appreciate the natural beauty of Indonesia, was an impactful experience.”

After finishing a French program in Moncton, Kate will be back in Crowsnest Pass for two weeks and will return to Hong Kong on Aug. 14.

Piikani golf tournament moves to Blairmore For the first time, the Piikani Nation is holding its Piikani Indian Days Golf Tourney in Crowsnest Pass, running Aug. 1 and 2.

The band sponsors the annual tournament, which has previously been held at Waterton, says tournament chairman Kevin Provost.

The band invites everyone in the communities to play, with Piikani heritage not required. It’s a chance to meet and play with new people.

Players should be over 16 and have some idea of how to play golf. However, the tourney puts players of various abilities on a more equal footing by subtracting handicaps from the net scores.

All of the money that goes into the tourney is given out as cash prizes, with a $10,000 hole-in-one contest.

The cost of the tourney is $220, to be paid before next Tuesday. Kevin can be reached at 403-632-8548.

By Erin Fairhurst A new exhibit at Lebel Mansion brings many familiar landscapes to life on canvas.

Artist Mike Judd has lived his entire life in the Rocky Mountains of southern Alberta, and his passion for his surroundings is evident in his work.

“I could paint here for the rest of my life and never get tired of it,” he says.

Mike spent several years as an outfitter and guide and has a deep respect for nature, especially for the undisturbed places that remain far off the beaten track. Much of his work focuses on the wild spaces he has discovered in his explorations.

One of the greatest impacts of the exhibit is that it resonates equally with viewers who are familiar with the landscapes portrayed, and with those who are not.

For example, the larger-than-life “Calm Day

on Cameron” will remind those who have been to Cameron Lake of the sounds of water lapping and the sweet smell of the alpine backcountry.

Those unfamiliar with the Waterton lake will still be drawn to the canvas and transported into the experience, thanks to the alluring colours and detail.

Patrons familiar with Mike’s work will notice a new addition to his repertoire. “This is my first time painting wildlife,” says Mike, who has brought elk, bison and even a bear called Boris to life in this exhibit. “It was a challenge, but one I enjoyed.”

The exhibit, sponsored by the Allied Arts Council of Pincher Creek, remains at Lebel Mansion until Aug. 29, and Mike says he is grateful for the opportunity.

“This is a great area for exhibits,” he says. “It is important for local artists to have a venue like this, close to home.”

Community celebrates an evolving museum

By Brad Quarin After being open for 30 years, Crowsnest Museum continues to evolve.

Members and supporters of the Crowsnest Historical Society recently gathered to mark the grand reopening of the newly renovated gift shop and the launch of a new exhibit.

The renovations took place in February, with the retail space and administrative area moved and the room painted. The rearranging creates more retail space and makes the gift shop appear more open and bright.

Last year, Crowsnest Pass observed the 100th anniversary of the Hillcrest Mine Disaster. Parts of the Hillcrest 100 efforts will now be immortalized as a permanent exhibit at Crowsnest Museum.

The new Hillcrest 100 exhibit is found in the mining room and features a combination of photos, storytelling, artifacts and video.

exhibit.

Artifacts include items from Masonic lodges, such as a minute book made a week after the disaster, naming the Masons who died. The book also details what the Masons did for the victims’ widows and orphans.

Visitors will learn about the heroic Henry Frolak, a survivor who went back into the mine to rescue others.

A more tragic tale visitors can read about is that of the Murray family.

David Murray Sr. emerged from the mine alive, but saw none of his sons had made it out. Although a constable tried to stop him, Mr. Murray threw him off and ran back into the mine. None of the Murrays came out afterwards.

Remembering a long-lost veteran

By Brad Quarin When most Canadians think of their war history, few remember the Boer War, which was fought in South Africa from 1899 to 1902. In fact, it is conceivable that many who have heard of the war wouldn’t be aware Canadians fought in it.

One local veteran of the Boer War was in particular danger of being forgotten. Johnny Hall lived in Crowsnest Pass and then Pincher Creek.

He died in October 1942, and was laid to rest in Pincher Creek’s Fairview Cemetery without a headstone.

That’s where the Pincher Creek Legion came through. The Legion recently paid tribute to the late veteran with a headstone, a veteran’s Maple Leaf and a small ceremony.

Recognition for Mr. Hall came about thanks to the work of Legion member Dave Miller, who has been running a program to mark each veteran’s grave with a Maple Leaf. There are 200 such memorials in the area.

The Legion has known about Mr. Hall’s burial location for a couple of years, but there was no marker, and without one, it could have no Maple Leaf.

To honour the veteran, Dave set about obtaining a military headstone, only to find he needed service and unit numbers, all lost over time.

However, Dave did manage to secure a headstone for Mr. Hall, thanks to Colin Smyth, who provided the sandstone, and Jack Rumsey, who provided the brass and engraving.

Johnny Hall was born in February 1876, and according to his obituary, he filled the first scraper on the Crowsnest Pass railway. He lived his last 40 years in Pincher Creek and worked as a night clerk at the King Edward Hotel. He became a familiar face in the community.

After an accident, he spent his last year in hospital, where he passed away. According to Dave, he had no family. However, the community has now better recognized Mr. Hall.

By Brad Quarin The Oldman Rose Society and the Allied Arts Council of Pincher Creek succeeded in bringing the past to life at an afternoon tea at the Lebel Mansion rose garden earlier this month.

The theme of the event was Downton Abbey, a TV show set in Yorkshire in the 1910s and 1920s.

“It had that flavour to it, that put it in that era,” says Ianthe Goodfellow, president of the Oldman Rose Society.

People in attendance dressed to reflect the period, with many in fancy hats and long dresses. Specialty teas, pastries and sandwiches were also served.

The music also took the guests to the past. Phil Lethbridge went from table to table to play violin, and many guests joined in singing. “The violin music was so beautiful, so traditional and delicate,” Ianthe says.

A new local group, the Big Little Band jazz ensemble, also performed, and Ianthe found them wonderful.

Roses were a big part of the festivities, featured in the art on display at Lebel Gallery and on a quilt by Heather Isaacson, which is being raffled off in September. Many people also adored the floral hats.

Visitors were fascinated by developments in rose growing shared by guest speakers Jim and Elizabeth Coutts.

Jim has spent a lifetime hybridizing roses, attempting to develop a hardy rose that can grow in our area. Roses have difficulties lasting in local gardens, and some gardeners cover them up with blankets in winter, Ianthe says.

Attendance was great at the tea, which was held solely for the entertainment of the guests. The event was supported by the Town of Pincher Creek.

Walmart shines for children’s hospital

By Brad Quarin Pincher Creek Walmart struck a blow last month for the Children’s Miracle Network, which supports Alberta Children’s Hospital in Calgary.

The store held several fundraisers for the charity, including its third annual show and shine, which enjoyed its biggest turnout yet.

“I just get excited when they all come rumbling in,” says organizer Gayle MacIntyre. “I was so excited, I was shaking.”

Altogether, local Walmart employees raised $10,514.84, which a Walmart grant brought up to $12,514.84.

This exceeded their goal of $6,338, and while Gayle was impressed with her volunteers, she is unsurprised by their success. “We go into it with the attitude where we’re just going to give it everything we’ve got,” she says. “Our store has always been successful.”

The show and shine attracted a record 83 entrants, who brought classic cars, trucks, motorcycles and even a 1950s semi. It was the first semi the Walmart show and shine has had, Gayle says.

She thinks the show and shine brings in people with great attitudes and a lot of pride in their vehicles.

Leisen won best truck for a 1936 Chevy pickup. Tessa Pitt won best bike for a 2008 Kikker, and Don Hawken won best in show for a 1953 hardtop custom Monarch.

Aside from the vehicle owners, the stars of the show were the volunteers, who planned, set up and picked up tables. The Village of Cowley provided a tent, Heritage Acres lent picnic tables and Stuart Schramm donated his services as a DJ. The show and shine alone raised $3,025.

Other fundraisers for the Children’s Miracle Network consisted of lunches, barbecues, bake sales and a jail-and-bail.

In the jail-and-bail, Walmart put its associates and town councillor Lorne Jackson in a pseudo-jail, asking for donations to get them out.

The money will go to new equipment and treatments at the children’s hospital. During the show and shine, Gayle says, people who had benefited from the hospital approached them and expressed gratitude. It was a reminder of how important this campaign is.

The Walmart fundraiser for the Children’s Miracle Network will be back next June.

Canada Day is always a time to celebrate, with activities hosted annually at Kootenai Brown Pioneer Village in Pincher Creek and at various locations in Coleman.

Robin Kirkness

Robin Kirkness, beloved husband of Honesty, passed away on June 29, 2015, at the age of 57.

Robin was born in Medicine Hat. As a young man, along with his brother Steven, he travelled around and saw North America, before settling in Pincher Creek, meeting Honesty and starting a family.

Robin was a loving husband, father, uncle, brother, son, and he will be sadly missed by all who knew him.

Robin enjoyed spending time with his family, quadding, camping and fishing. He was a jack of all trades; he worked as a mechanic but his heart was in carpentry. Robin was a little rough around the edges but had a heart of gold.

Robin is survived by his wife, Honesty; his sons, Chace and Tyler; his father, John; his mother, Dorothy; his siblings Richard, Chris, Barb, Collin, Rod, Mark and Tanya; and many nieces and nephews.

We find peace knowing that Robin is with his predeceased siblings, Carol, Connie, Cindy and Steven.

A celebration of life was held at the Bruders’ home on July 4, 2015.

Rachel Newrick experienced the Sinister 7 Ultra for the first time this year as both a spectator and a volunteer. She watched the start of the race in downtown Blairmore, which she describes as “a splurge of runners crammed to get across the start line.”

Just a mile later, “they were strung out like runner beans, forced into that by the narrow path along the highway,” she says. “I wondered what it had been like as the large group entered the path, jostling for position in the pack.”

By the time the runners reached Transition Area 4, where Rachel was volunteering, they were much more spread out.

Fourteen hundred people took on the gruelling race. Sinister 7, created by Full Moon Adventure Company, is an award-winning annual event in Crowsnest Pass. Runners come from across Canada and around the world for a chance to test their mettle against the elements in the Rocky Mountains.

New records were set this year for male and female soloists and for team times. David Proctor of Black Diamond finished the course in 18 hours 21 minutes 47 seconds, and Alissa St. Laurent of Edmonton in 18:37:19. Men’s team Original Joe’s Redline Overlords of Edmonton posted a time of 12:52:43.

Crowsnest Mountain Ladies – including runners Jody Peebles, Kathy Yanco, Laurie Huska, Jackie Woodman, Tracy Wakaluk, Shirlene Gietz and Christine Misseghers – was the top ladies’ team, and Birchwood Bushwackers of Fort McMurray was the top mixed team.
