Pincher Creek Dolphins swimmers and parents call it a day after pulling weeds in the flower beds surrounding Boston Pizza last weekend. The local business was happy to supply the crew with free supper and a $700 donation for their efforts. They pulled enough weeds to fill 25 bags, and the donation brought them up to 85 per cent of their season fundraising goal of $11,000. At 50-plus years, the Dolphins is one of the oldest continuously running clubs in the region.

My Little Corner

Taking the road less travelled has always appealed to me. I’m quick to turn off the beaten path when a glimpse of something unusual or an interesting name beckons.

Our trips home to northeastern Saskatchewan usually involve latenight driving, so it was a treat to travel from Saskatoon to Nipawin on a sunny afternoon last week.

I’m sure we’ve passed the sign to Shannon Lake a hundred times. For the first time, I turned south off Highway 41 near Wakaw to see what there is to see. You’ll notice that this road leads right to a drop into knee-deep water. That was a surprise! There doesn’t seem to be anything resembling a beach, and the lake appears flooded, with dead trees standing far out into the water all the way around.

A web page invites people to their quiet, private, heaven on earth.

Another lists a lakefront lot for $60,000. I think we’ll be one-time visitors.

At the intersection to Highway 20 heading north (near Yellow Creek), a church caught my daughter’s eye and we detoured again.

Before we got there, Jaiden spotted a monument, far back in the ditch.

Hidden by thistles up to my chin is a tribute to four lives lost on July 16, 1988. Maximilian and Agnes Forster of Lake Lenore and Heide and Ulrich Rothenberger of Germany died that day, 27 years ago.

Farther up the road, we found a well-maintained church and cemetery. The onion-shaped domes stood grandly against the dark-blue sky.

Nowhere, on the buildings or fences, could we find a name to identify this beautiful place we had come across. One of Jaiden’s aunts later told us we had been at the Holy Trinity Ukrainian Orthodox Church of Tarnopol.

Finding hidden gems always leaves me wanting to know more. Brief searches online haven’t brought forth much information about these sites.

I know we have readers with Saskatchewan backgrounds, and I wonder if anyone has stories that will match up with these three pictures. If so, give me a call at 403-904-2227 or email shannon@shootinthebreeze.ca.

Former Pincher Creek rancher named an influential Albertan

By Brad Quarin Among such heavy hitters as Rachel Notley, Brian Jean and Naheed Nenshi, a conservationist and Pincher Creek native found himself ranked among the 50 most influential Albertans.

Larry Simpson, associate regional vice-president of the Nature Conservancy of Canada, was surprised and seemingly perplexed to be named a leading innovator

by Alberta Venture magazine. But the distinction doesn’t seem much of a stretch, considering he has helped raise $135 million to conserve 1.5 million acres of land over 25 years.

What has driven him hasn’t been distinctions like this, but knowing that the land will be available to enjoy for generations to come.

“It is emotionally rewarding,” he says.

Larry hails from a farm east of Pincher Creek, with a spectacular view of the foothills that would shape his destiny. The landscape in Pincher Creek and the magnificence of the nearby Waterton Lakes National Park would give him a taste for the outdoors.

“I’ve never forgotten it. It’s always stayed with me,” he says.

Today, he lives in Calgary, having left Pincher Creek at age 18, but he continues to find fulfilment and peace of mind outdoors. He still has relatives in Pincher

Creek.

For 25 years, Larry has stayed with the Nature Conservancy, finding it to be a useful tool in saving vital lands. You can’t become wealthy with this job, but it offers a lot of diversity that he enjoys.

As associate regional vice-president, his role is to represent the organization, meet donors, landowners and government officials, and develop strategies for conservation. You never know what the job will entail in any given week, he says.

The career does take him on field trips to the nature he aspires to protect, as he often meets with the landowners on their farms and ranches.

In considering his proudest achievements, the Waterton Park Front and Waldron Ranch Project stand out as important undertakings.

The agreement to conserve 30,000 acres of grasslands at Waldron Ranch made news last year. Waldron, one of the continent’s biggest surviving grasslands, covers a vast area north of Pincher Creek, off Highway 22 and the Cowboy Trail.

Waldron is cattle ranchland belonging to the Waldron Grazing Co-op’s 72 shareholders, who accepted an easement on the land ensuring it will not be subdivided, developed or drained.

100 Mile Bike Ride raises $12,000 for LACL

By Brad Quarin Cyclists passed through Crowsnest Pass during last month’s 100 Mile Bike Ride, taking them from the British Columbia border to Lethbridge.

Having secured pledges, 32 cyclists participated in the seventh annual ride June 27, raising $12,000 for the Lethbridge Association for Community Living.

The organization is a resource to families of people with disabilities, says development co-ordinator Alicia Visser.

Nearly all of the riders did the whole 100 miles. Most came from the Lethbridge area, while some were from Crowsnest Pass.

In addition to pledges, LACL accepted donations to cover the cost of the ride and barbecue afterwards. Able Dental Group, which includes Crowsnest Dental, was generous in making a donation, Alicia says.

LACL was founded to foster a more inclusive society. The group offers information sessions, workshops and networking. LACL isn’t meant to provide many services, but rather to point people to where they may get a needed hand and to educate them about their rights.

The group also covers the Pincher Creek and Crowsnest Pass area, making trips to the communities to help, she says. LACL has held workshops in the communities and representatives visit local schools to talk.

Crowsnest Dental thanks all volunteers and participants who took on the 100 Mile Bike Ride.

LARRY SIMPSON, continued from page 3 Larry’s role in the project was to meet with the shareholders around three years ago to explain the advantages of an investment by the Nature Conservancy.

He helped negotiate the deal and raised money for the project. Over these few years, he had many things to work on, but this was among the most important.

He explains he took an interest in Waldron because with this job, you have to think big.

The Nature Conservancy also protects 30,000 acres of land in the Waterton Park Front, something he is very happy with.

In 1997, the W. Garfield Weston Foundation was seeking a project, so the Nature Conservancy took them on a visit to Waterton, Larry says.

The edges of the lands were rugged and undeveloped, and land prices were higher than ranchers could afford. The project would ensure the land would not be divided and sold off.

As with the Waldron Ranch Project, Larry had met with landowners at Waterton and helped craft a strategy for conservation. The fact that people can still enjoy the glory of Waterton is the reward, he says.

There have been smaller achievements he is proud of, such as preserving Christie Ridge, south of Beauvais Lake.

He has also supported the campaign for collision mitigation on Highway 3 by helping find the places that connect different habitats. These are where wildlife cross.

Larry was humbled by being named among the most influential Albertans and doesn’t know how it happened. He believes there are others in Pincher Creek who would have also deserved the recognition. However, he hopes his work has been helpful and productive.

Riversdale Resources Team Expands in the Pass Riversdale has appointed Cal Clark as Sustainable Development Manager for its rapidly advancing Grassy Mountain coking coal project. Cal is an Alberta local and will be moving to Crowsnest Pass with his wife Carmen and young family.

Cal holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Ecology (University of Guelph), and a Master of Education degree (University of Calgary) and has a career spanning more than 25 years in forestry, mining and energy sectors. Most recently Cal was with Cenovus Energy developing environmental management strategies to address key issues and enhance environmental performance related to oil and gas operations. Cal will take responsibility at Riversdale for Environmental Management and Planning, Community Engagement and First Nations.

Steve Mallyon, Riversdale’s Managing Director said “at the last open house we outlined our plans to bring highly skilled people and young families to the Pass, so Cal and Carmen are a great example of the team which will eventually develop Grassy into a long term sustainable and responsible development.

Waterton Perfumery creates custom scents with local flavour

By Brad Quarin Women who enjoy the flowers of Waterton Lakes National Park can take home a little part of them — the scent — thanks to a new business.

“I make things that smell like flowers in Waterton,” says Shelley Dunbar, owner of the Waterton Perfumery.

Shelley wanted to start her own business, and imagined a product that would complement the beauty of the area. Gaining skills through a combination of home study and hands-on learning in Thailand, she began offering her unique perfumes, soaps, lotions, body butters and lip balms.

While recreating the scent of Waterton flowers is her aim, she says she mixes her perfumes using traditional oils such as rose and lavender.

Blending essential oils and alcohols to make perfume can be quite a process. How much time it takes depends on the number of ingredients, with one of her blends having 40. A complex perfume can take weeks to make, and men’s cologne can take two months.

For the ladies, a special service the Waterton Perfumery offers is a perfume just for you. With a wide variety of oils available, the business can customize a perfume by developing a new blend. Customers receive five samples and can pick their favourite smell.

Samples are necessary, Shelley has learned, since perfumes can smell different on different individuals.

Having expanded to body lotions and lip balms during the last year, Shelley’s next goal is to develop a shampoo.

TACKLING SINISTER 7, continued from page 7 Setting a high goal and chasing it was also something to do for herself, after having raised three children now in their 20s, Susan says.

Another local runner, Tynan Groves, pushed himself to run in Sinister 7 for the first time, on a mixed team mainly from Calgary and Edmonton.

Tynan likens living in Crowsnest Pass and not running in Sinister 7 to a Parisian who never visits the Eiffel Tower.

Having run for five years since quitting smoking, his running was given purpose in Sinister 7.

Noah was inspired to run in Sinister 7 for the first time by his older brother Josh, who has competed in the ultramarathon. Just making the age requirement of 13, Noah was supported by his family in deciding to try it.

In January, after the decision was made, Noah started training four times a week with his team. They ran on the actual Sinister 7 trails, a major advantage available to Crowsnest Pass runners over the visiting teams. Noah says it was a great team with a great coach, Ryan Peebles.

Susan trained for the event over eight months, running on all of the trails that make up the Sinister 7 course, which offer “amazing views.” She found support from many people along the way.

Running was crucial to Jody’s training as well, but she also finds physiotherapy, massage therapy and meditation beneficial.

Having placed third last year in Sinister 7, Jody says her team pushed for first this time. The wait for the race to start was the most intense part for her.

Running the full course, Susan took off from Main Street Blairmore up to Adanac Road, Hastings Ridge by Turtle Mountain and back to Blairmore. She ran out to the information centre west of Coleman, and at nighttime ran to Knowles Flats in Coleman, around Crowsnest Mountain and to Crowsnest Sports Complex.

Managing the intensity of the running took determination, with Susan and Tynan agreeing it was “mind over matter.”

Susan also took a rather abstract tip from her son, to hold out her hands and “pull the energy from the mountains and surroundings.”

With a goal to complete the race in 29 hours 29 minutes, Susan finished at 29 hours 26 minutes. She says she felt great, except for her knees, which made running downhill hard.

Her husband and children met her at the transitions, which was special to her.

Tynan ran the third leg for his team, which was 35 kilometres. It started at Pass Powderkeg and took him to York Creek and back to Pass Powderkeg.

At one point, he went through a giant mud pit. Finding it very slippery, he fretted about whether he would finish.

He finished in six hours 15 minutes and, although his team didn’t finish the race and wasn’t placed, Tynan met his personal expectations.

While running, Tynan and Susan also met other runners,

and although you can’t have long conversations during Sinister 7, they shared support and some “moments.”

Noah’s 16-kilometre leg started up by Adanac and took him to Isabelle Sellon School in Blairmore. Going up the hills was exhausting, and the heat made it harder.

Having set a goal of under two hours, he finished at one hour 47 minutes. He found it difficult to walk afterwards, but considered it the best weekend of his life and wants to run again next year.

On her team, Jody ran the seventh and final leg to Crowsnest Sports Complex. With a goal to place first, she felt stressed about not knowing where her closest female competitor was. Learning that her team was first came as a relief.

Visiting runners also set records for Sinister 7, in the solo male, solo female and team categories.

David Proctor of Black Diamond clocked in at 18 hours 21 minutes 47 seconds, beating the previous record by 25 minutes.

“Given the conditions of the course, I’m very happy with the time I posted,” David says. ”I hope to come back next year and to drop the record even further.”

The main psychological challenge came when a storm disrupted his pace and the mud slowed him down. “It was fun to be chased by Alissa St. Laurent at the end, making me pick up my socks and get to the finish line first.”

Alissa, from Edmonton, had the best showing among female soloists in Sinister 7 history, at 18 hours 37 minutes 19 seconds. This beat the previous record by 2½ hours, and she also placed second among all soloists, beating every man but David.

Original Joe’s Redline Overlords, from Edmonton, set the team record at 12 hours 52 minutes 43 seconds.

Among the organizers, Scott Warris had the challenge of transitioning from volunteer concerned with concession and parking to co-owner of Full Moon Adventure Company. He bought a portion of the company in January after co-founder Andrew Fairhurst stepped down.

This time, Scott co-ordinated the facilities and managed the stage during the opening ceremony and awards.

He faced a bit of a learning curve and discovered more goes into Sinister 7 than he had thought.

Still, Scott and Brian have plans for further expansion of Full Moon Adventure. Their second ultramarathon, the Black Spur Ultra, debuts in Kimberley, B.C., on Aug. 21.

Walking tour unveiled On July 1, Canada Day, the Crowsnest Heritage Initiative unveiled its Historic Coleman Walking Tour at its Coleman Heritage Kiosk, across from the Legion in downtown Coleman, part of the Coleman National Historic Site.

A new panel featuring the walking tour was unveiled by Coun. Dean Ward of the Municipality of Crowsnest Pass, and Larry Davies, vice-president for coal development with Teck Resources.

Fred Bradley, chairman of the Crowsnest Heritage Initiative Society, presented the first copies of the Historic Coleman Walking Tour brochure to Dean and Larry. The free brochures will be available at the Coleman Heritage Kiosk and at the Crowsnest Museum.

The unveiling officially opened the new self-guided walking tour. Volunteers from the Crowsnest Heritage Initiative had installed building plaques on historic buildings in downtown Coleman and added one new interpretive panel about Coleman Collieries to complement the tour brochure.

Barbara Van Vierssen Trip, program director of the Crowsnest Museum, then led the dignitaries and public on a very informative tour of historic downtown Coleman.

The tour concluded at the museum, where executive director Chris Matthews officiated at a ceremony to release a booklet on the Coleman National Historic Site. The booklet was produced by the Crowsnest Heritage Initiative in conjunction with the Crowsnest Museum and is available at the museum.

John Barlow, MP for Macleod, brought greetings on behalf of the Government of Canada, Larry Davies made remarks on behalf of Teck Resources, and Mayor Blair Painter represented the Municipality of Crowsnest Pass. The dignitaries received the first copies of the new booklet, which tells the story of early Coleman and its designation as a national historic site.

The Crowsnest Heritage Initiative’s signage program received funding for the Historic Coleman Walking Tour and the Coleman National Historic Site booklet from the provincial Community Initiatives Program and from Teck Resources.

The objectives of the signage program are to celebrate the incredible history of the area by increasing the local and travelling public’s awareness of our rich heritage, promoting conservation of our heritage resources, and increasing tourism by developing a historic driving route along the main streets in the five major historic communities that form the Municipality of Crowsnest Pass.

Previously, the signage program has unveiled historic walking tours of Blairmore, Hillcrest, and the Hillcrest Cemetery.

The Bellevue Historic Walking Tour and building plaques will be unveiled at the Bellevue Heritage Kiosk on Main Street on July 30 at 5:30 p.m., as part of the 10th Crowsnest Pass Doors Open and Heritage Festival.

A delicious night out at Taste of Crowsnest

The success of the Taste of Crowsnest food festival was delicious, indeed.

The event, in which Crowsnest Pass restaurants and other businesses offered mouthwatering food and beverage samples, was held for a fourth year in mid July.

It is a fundraiser for the Crowsnest Pass Boys and Girls Club, and brought in $5,100, of which $3,100 will go to the club.

That comes from 2,150 taste tickets sold and $650 made from the auction and 50-50 draw, says club president Scott Warris. Participating restaurants contributed half of the taste ticket sales and the municipality also chipped in $900 from its community

event funding program.

This was the most profitable year yet for the festival, with a turnout of 92 people.

All of this was made possible by around 20 volunteers who collected tickets, cleaned up and handled other tasks.

Musical entertainment was donated by Wendell and the Deb, while Lowry Toombs donated his services as auctioneer.

Although a signature fundraiser of the Boys and Girls Club, the duck race, is taking a rest this year, Scott says the club is doing fine without it.

The club has been busy with other fundraisers throughout the year and will have more to do during the Doors Open and Heritage Festival.

Teen heads to national tournament

By Brad Quarin Next week, Pincher Creek junior golfer Ethan Choi will be at the Canadian junior boys’ championship in Vaudreuil-Dorion, Que. This is only the latest in a series of tournaments Ethan has competed in, reflecting the young teen’s talent.

“He’s very focused and dedicated, and has a very good temperament for golf,” says Gord Culham, Pincher Creek Golf Club manager. “I hope he encourages more junior golfers in Pincher Creek to come out and experience the game.”

At 13, Ethan says he has been golfing for 10 years.

He started out when his dad, Sheldon, took him to the driving range and also put up a net in the garage to hit golf balls into.

Ethan kept up the hobby, enjoying the competitive aspects, improving his skills and meeting new people at each tournament.

Competition has taken him all over Alberta and to Saskatchewan. Earlier this month, he tied for 11th place among 155 competitors, aged 13 and 14, at the junior world championships in San Diego.

“It was a great experience. I didn’t think I would do that well,” he says. By staying calm and patient, he secured a good result.

Before San Diego, he was at the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tournament in Lethbridge in May. Ethan found that one a breeze, competing on a shorter course and placing first for ages 14 and under.

For the national competition in Vaudreuil-Dorion, he qualified at the Alberta junior championship in Lethbridge. In four rounds, he placed sixth and became the first alternate.

This will be his first time in Quebec. The Canadian junior boys’ championship is for ages 18 and under, and the size of the course, meant for older teens, will be greater than he is used to. There will be nine members of Team Alberta, and Ethan will be competing against them as well as golfers from every province.

He doesn’t have any specific goals besides “making the cut,” gaining experience and learning from the older golfers.

Aside from representing the club at tournaments, Ethan helps out picking up balls on the range and with other chores.

Personal donations are being made at the pro shop.

Ethan thanks the golfers, golf club members and staff, and the community at large for their support. “I really appreciate it,” he says.

The national championship runs Aug. 3 to 6.

By Brad Quarin With a cake and a nice print of an $8 stamp, Canada Post bid farewell to Rose Gail, the only rural and suburban mail carrier in Crowsnest Pass.

The local area superintendent, Keith Turner, came from Lethbridge to her retirement party, held in mid July.

“I’m so excited,” Rose says. “It’s bittersweet — I don’t want to leave.”

Rose began working at the Coleman post office 17 years ago, delivering mail to businesses, sorting parcels and placing letters in boxes.

Her favourite memory of the job is from a few years ago, when a man would wait for his mother at the post office every day. Rose would give him $2 for food. After the man got a job at the mine, he would place two hearts in his box every Valentine’s Day, never forgetting Rose’s charity.

Rose is known in the community for providing musical entertainment at events. She plans to spend more time with her grandchildren and to travel.

Community celebrates Blackfoot culture

By Brad Quarin Piikani cultural traditions will be honoured this week at the Piikani Nation Annual Celebration.

The community looks forward all year to the celebration, says chairman Lowell Yellowhorn. Many Piikani members also live outside of the reserve, so this is a time to return to the community to visit.

Highlights of the event are a powwow, rodeo, parade, ball tournament and princess pageant.

“It’s a pretty reputable powwow in Canada,” Lowell says.

The competitive dancing and drumming begin at noon and 7 p.m. on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Grand entry to the powwow takes place on Sunday at 1 p.m. A “trained eye” will evaluate the drumming and dancing in detail, and prize money will be awarded. The powwow is free to see and parking is also complimentary.

Each day of the celebration starts off with a free breakfast for community members. These fun get-togethers run from 8 to 11 a.m. at the Lighthouse Church on Wednesday, the health centre on Thursday, social development on Friday, the board of education on Saturday and the daycare on Sunday.

The junior rodeo, this Wednesday at Crow Lodge Park, is an open competition for those under 18 who would like to pursue rodeo. It features steer riding, sheep riding, pole bending and more.

For the rest of the week, the senior rodeo will be held every day at 1 p.m., featuring athletes from around Canada and the United States.

On Thursday, the Piikani princess pageant will be held at 1 p.m. at the powwow arbour. It will feature speeches and dancing.

Finally on Sunday, there will be a parade, starting at 10 a.m. at the community hall and riding to the powwow grounds.

So, if you’re curious to see more of Piikani culture, this is a golden opportunity.

Local athletes take Summer Games by storm It seemed to be raining medals for local athletes who attended the Southern Alberta Summer Games, held in Claresholm in July.

The Municipal District of Pincher Creek took home 81 gold medals, 33 silver medals and 30 bronze medals, a year after hosting the Games. The Municipality of Crowsnest Pass earned 18 gold medals, nine silver medals and six bronze medals.

Diane Burt Stuckey, Pincher Creek’s director of community services, says that Claresholm did a great job hosting the Games and that its facilities looked nice.

Eden Hoff, who co-ordinated the Games, was excited to have the Games in Claresholm and to have 2,000 competitors, of all ages and walks of life.

Pincher Creek sent 175 of those competitors, ranging from children in swimming to seniors in cribbage.

Altogether, Pincher Creek athletes placed fourth among the districts, with more gold medals than any other district, Diane says.

Usually, the hosting community wins the Games by having the most athletes, and larger urban centres also do well. So, fourth place is very good.

This success can be attributed to a good showing and a lot of enthusiasm, Diane

says. Athletes were also excelling in sports Pincher Creek hasn’t been known for, such as cycling, track and archery.

Meanwhile, Crowsnest Pass athletes were a pleasure to host, Eden says. With such positive attitudes, she felt they personified the spirit of the Games.

There were 57 competitors from Crowsnest Pass, a typical number, though not as many as last year.
