My Little Corner Thumbing through the pages of a proof copy of this week’s paper, I am impressed by the amazing people and interesting opportunities that abound in our area.

In the pages are stories and photos from recent events and more that are coming up.

They are proof of community spirit that is alive and well. How wonderful that we have community-minded groups and volunteers who raise money to help those in need locally, and others beyond our regional boundaries.

There are a variety of ways to help — participating in sporting events like the Rick Rypien Memorial Golf Tournament, supporting fundraising groups like the Windy Slopes Health Foundation, riding the Big Bike for the Heart and Stroke Foundation, supporting cancer research through the Relay for Life and even bashing a pink car with a sledgehammer to raise money through Wild Pink Yonder.

Crowsnest Pass is making headlines with high-profile sports events like the Sinister 7 Ultra Marathon and the Bootleg Bike Festival and Rumhead Enduro. People come from near and far to participate, volunteer and enjoy.

The beauty found in our backyards is topnotch. Events like the Waterton Wildflower Festival give us a fresh look at sights we tend to take for granted. Crowsnest Outdoors invites you to join them in exploration of the Pass, and the Huckleberry Festival gives you the chance to see Castle Mountain from the perspective of a different season. Crowsnest Conservation

provides education relevant to all who enjoy the outdoors, and Going Wild and the Crowsnest Pass Pistol Club host specialty shows.

Celebrities, like Terry Grant of Mantracker, are often found in our neck of the woods. It seems everyone is drawn here.

History, heritage and culture are not forgotten. Museums preserve pieces of our communities such as the Turcott Building, the Piikani celebration brings young and old together through tradition, agricultural history comes to life at Heritage Acres, and the Doors Open and Heritage Festival celebrates everything about Crowsnest Pass. Graveyard history tours are another unique way to connect with local history.

Western tradition lives on through amateur groups like the Turtle Mountain Riding Club and events like the Pincher Creek Pro Rodeo.

Businesses both new and established, provide top-notch service on many levels. They are supported by the local chamber of commerce through events like the rodeo parade and an annual trade show. Innovation is the name of the game for Alberta SouthWest, whose achievements garner national attention.

There are celebrations of life events and achievements, both happy and sad, and groups like Women in the Wind who encourage people of like mind to gather together.

These people, events, groups and things are all found in our neighbourhood and in the pages of the Breeze this week. Enjoy!

“We are lacking this kind of thing in the Pass, and [I] wanted to help continue Rick Rypien’s legacy, as he was someone I looked up to,” Ricky says.

Still, he says he’s not sure why the award went to him, since everyone in the foundation puts in time and effort.

The Rick Rypien Memorial Golf Tournament filled up this year with 108 golfers on the Friday and 136 on the Saturday. It’s pretty significant to bring that many golfers to southern Alberta, he says.

The Friday winners and overall winners of the tournament were Dan Johnson, Kyle Draper, Grant Collings and Darryl Brecht.

The Saturday winners were Manson Kelly, Chad Novak, Mike Price and Derek Atkinson.

There were 30 corporate sponsors, and they provide most of what the tournament raises.

It’s not yet clear how much was raised overall, but the live auction with Bob Westrop brought in $22,450 and the silent auction raised $1,500.

Corporate sponsors and golfers also saw where some of the money was going, with a formal cheque presentation of $10,000 to Tia Filewich.

The donation helped purchase a wheechairaccessible van for Tia, whose legs had been amputated. She needed to get to dialysis treatments, so transportation was vital.

“It became a matter of life and death,” Ricky says.

Some local groups to receive support from the foundation this year are the Boys and Girls Club and KidSport, which helps disadvantaged children pay for sports fees and equipment.

“We’re not just limited to giving funds to the Crowsnest Pass, [but] obviously, this is our home base,” Wes says. “We want to try to help the people in the community as much as possible.”

Seasoned racer Shane Jensen from Kelowna, who rode in the elite men’s category, said the race was the “best-organized event” he had been to so far this season.

Shane also attended the Bootleg Bike Festival as a rep for Giant Bicycles, and said he stayed busy sending out a lot of demo bikes up at Pass Powderkeg. “It’s pretty great to see people come back after riding a bike and feeling really positive and excited about it.”

Shane is an avid participant in the BC Enduro Series and had hoped to edge out friend and rival Darcy Neniska of Coleman in the Rumhead Enduro. In the end, though, he found himself sandwiched between two Crowsnest Pass riders on the elite men’s podium. Darcy took home first-place honours and Gordon Yanota was third.

In the open men’s division, Mathew Li was

the first-place winner, followed by local rider Matt Henig in second and Casey Dyck in third.

The men’s 40-plus category saw two more locals on the podium. Blairmore’s Steve Atkinson was grinning from ear to ear as he took in the view from his first-place spot, Terry Lazier of Coleman could barely contain his surprise at his second-place finish, and third-place winner Graham Pye of Cochrane was certainly no stranger to the trails of Crowsnest Pass.

In the women’s 40-plus category, racer Willy Peters had the podium all to herself, while the open women’s division showed a tight race between the top three. Local rider Karey Watanabe placed first and said her favourite stage of the race was the Berma-Grin trail.

“The whole weekend has been fantastic,” she said. “I love racing on my home turf!”

Christine Misseghers of Coleman took second place, and third went to Aubrey Demchuk, who praised the event on her Facebook page for giving out equal prize money to male and female podium winners.

About 40 volunteers helped make the

weekend a success, and their support didn’t go unnoticed. “The volunteers were really nice,” said David Visser of Lethbridge. “The whole weekend gives you a great sense of community.”

The local mountain bike club’s ultimate goal is to put Crowsnest Pass on the map as a premier mountain biking destination, but in the meantime, they already have some pretty big achievements in the books.

UROC has over 100 members, 50 kilometres of single-track trail, and increasing support from sponsors. Run entirely by volunteers, the club relies on grants, sponsorships, donations and fundraisers to remain operational and to continue building quality trail.

“As much money as possible goes back into the trails,” says John Redekopp, the club’s vice-president.

Turcott building opens to the public

By Brad Quarin After a major campaign to raise funds to save the historic Turcott building from demolition, move it to Kootenai Brown Pioneer Village and add exhibits, the building is open.

The Pincher Creek museum celebrated the opening of the Turcott building, previously the Bank of Commerce building, with a ceremony and tour last week.

Among those in attendance were municipal district reeve Brian Hammond, town councillor Jim Litkowski and former building owner Garth Turcott with his wife, Joan.

“I’m really excited to have it here,” says Colleen Casey-Cyr, president of the Pincher Creek and District Historical Society.

The building is KBPV’s first large business building and epitomizes the early business history of Pincher Creek.

Garth was pleased by what he saw during the tour, saying the building looks better now than when he was looking after it.

It was built in 1906 as a Bank of Commerce, brought by train to Pincher Station and hauled onto Main Street. It was one of only 50 Bank of Commerce buildings on the Canadian Prairies, says KBPV curator Farley Wuth.

In 1964 the building became a law office for Turcott and Company, and in 1986 it was moved to Hewetson Avenue.

During speeches made at the ceremony, Garth took time to recall his short but fascinating polit-

ical career, which unfolded when he owned the Turcott building.

In 1966, he was asked to run for the NDP in a provincial byelection by party leader Grant Notley, the father of current premier Rachel Notley.

Garth rejected the idea at first, and Joan agreed with that impulse, but Mr. Notley eventually talked him into it.

The NDP was serious about the Pincher Creek-Crowsnest byelection. Garth says every important party member seemed to be there to help, and they had campaign offices in Pincher Creek, Blairmore, Coleman and Bellevue.

Once elected, Garth accused a few Social Credit cabinet ministers of abusing their positions for personal benefit. Initially censured by the legislature, Garth came back with more documents from the CBC to back up his claims. He lost his seat in the next election, but is glad to see Rachel Notley in office now.

In his speech, Brian Hammond recalled going up the stairs of the Turcott building as a child during the 1940s and later when Garth owned it. Many historical artifacts and buildings are important to local people because of their own personal memories, Brian says.

Jim Litkowski also congratulated the historical society and museum on the achievement.

The ribbon at the doors of the Turcott building was untied, and now anyone can explore this piece of local history.

Hop on the Big Bike with RBC

By Brad Quarin The Heart and Stroke Foundation and Royal Bank of Canada are inviting you to take a seat on a bicycle built for 29.

The foundation’s Big Bike will ride through downtown Pincher Creek from the firehall on Aug. 13, in support of research concerning heart disease and strokes.

RBC opted to put together a team, mainly for personal reasons, says Pincher Creek branch manager Brad Williams. Many staff at RBC have family who’ve experienced heart attacks or strokes.

It’s also a reason to get out in the community, and other RBC branches around Alberta are participating.

Pincher Creek’s RBC staff rode the Big Bike last year as well. However, they don’t have enough people to fill 29 seats and are appealing to the community to join their team, Riding 4 a Reason.

Anyone interested, aged 14 or over, can contact Brad at 403-627-6174.

Each team member is expected to raise $50, mainly by appealing to family, friends and colleagues.

Trish York, Heart and Stroke Foundation fund development co-ordinator in Alberta, says money is raised across Canada.

Some of the research this supports takes place at the University of Calgary and University of Alberta, and has saved lives.

The foundation has also used its funds to provide 190 new automated external defibrillators to community centres, arenas and airports in Alberta, Trish says.

Another program aims to train Grade 10 students in CPR at no cost.

Trish expects the ride to take about 20 minutes, and says the exercise will help keep cyclists healthy.

Get your motor runnin’

By Erin Fairhurst Back in 1979, an Ohio woman named Becky Brown placed an ad in her local paper. The ad wasn’t about hosting a cookie swap or organizing a book club, but about gauging the interest in motorcycling among other women. She received 11 responses, and Women in the Wind was born.

Today, Women in the Wind has chapters in Canada, America, the United Kingdom and Australia, and nearly 100 riders will gather for the Canadian rally in Pincher Creek, Aug. 13 to 15.

The experiences of many female motorcyclists started off the same — riding on the back of a bike and hanging onto a husband or boyfriend.

But many women develop their own passion for the open road, and organizations like Women in the Wind help unite them, as well as promote safety, awareness and camaraderie.

Cindy Nobiss, who is organizing the Canadian rally with Karen Hamerton, says the rallies are ultimately about “a group of fun-loving, caring women getting together to make new connections, rekindle friendships and explore a common passion.”

Until two years ago, the annual rally was an Alberta-based event, but its popularity has grown

so much that it has become a national rally. This will be Cindy’s seventh time attending, and Karen’s 14th. They are expecting riders from all over Alberta, Saskatchewan and British Columbia, as well as California and Nevada.

“Women from all walks of life attend — all different ages, and all different kinds of bikes,” says Cindy. “We welcome everyone. Imagine having 100 sisters.”

Participants will receive maps of Waterton, Crowsnest Pass, Highway 22 and surrounding areas, and will have the opportunity to take part in group rides so they can hit the road and explore.

The rally will also feature a banquet with a Prohibition theme, a poker run, a scavenger hunt, a social barbecue, and a show and shine in the parking lot of the Heritage Inn at Pincher Creek on Aug. 15 from 9 to 11 a.m.

Rally headquarters will be the Heritage Inn, but if you see any of the Women in the Wind out and about on their bikes, give them a wave.

“We are all somebody’s mom, daughter, grandma, sister or niece,” says Cindy, “so please watch out for us.”

Relay for Life and Ovarian Cancer Walk of Hope join forces

By Brad Quarin Local crusaders for cancer research have until Sept. 14 to form their teams and secure pledges for Pincher Creek’s second Relay for Life, set for Sept. 19.

“I think it’s a special day of friendship and supports and fun,” says chairwoman Karen Andrew. “It can be sombre, but not for long.”

This year, the walk for the Canadian Cancer Society is being combined in Pincher Creek with the Ovarian Cancer Canada Walk of Hope.

The Walk of Hope, held in the community for the last two years, was started by Marlene Bourque, Leslie Claringbull and Danielle Tetachuk after Marlene was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. She is now cancer-free.

It’s hoped that combining the two events will make it bigger and better. The money raised will go into research of all cancers, rather than ovarian cancer particularly.

“It’s easier for the community to support,” Leslie says. “It will benefit a lot more people.”

Karen is a survivor who was diagnosed

with breast cancer while coincidentally leading annual fundraising fashion shows to help fight the disease. The shows brought in $300,000 over 10 years. She served as chairwoman for Relay for Life last year, as well.

To her, Relay for Life is about more than remembering loved ones lost to cancer. It’s also about moving on and uniting to do something about the disease.

“It’s very important to keep fundraising going,” Karen says. “Cancer’s not going away yet, and it’s up to us to make a difference.”

Some of the organizers working on the relay have been helped by medication that came as a result of more research.

Participants will walk around a track at the Pincher Creek agricultural grounds, from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Some walk the entire time, while most take turns with team members.

This year, some people may choose to run, on a five-kilometre loop along the creek sometime within a two-hour period, with the option to do extra loops.

Each team will consist of about 10 people, who can raise funds before the relay in their own campaigns.

The day of the relay will also see a 50-50 draw and silent auctions. Karen especially admires the sale of luminaries, which are purchased in someone’s memory and used to light the track.

Karen stresses that Relay for Life is for walkers and runners of all ages and fitness levels.

It’s scheduled in daytime to make it easier for children to join in.

The event will also have face painting, games and musical entertainment for children and families. A lunch of hamburgers, fruit and water will be served.

Joining Karen, Leslie, Danielle and Marlene on the committee are B.J. Scott, Rosaleen Berger, Anne Dyck, Maggie Olsen and Joanie Freeman. All have been touched by cancer at some time.

There was no shortage of fun things to do in Crowsnest Pass last weekend, with many events tied in with the Doors Open and Heritage Festival. A blast from the past Surrounded by a sea of John Deere green, visitors to Heritage Acres Farm Museum last weekend had no lack of things to see and do. Demonstrations included running the sawmill and making rope with the help of many hands. The Parade of Power and tractor pull were main attractions of the museum’s annual show. The meals were delicious, and you could take a big step back in time with a ride in a horse-drawn stagecoach.

Barb passed away peacefully after a short but courageous battle with pancreatic cancer.

Barb is lovingly remembered by her children Nicholette (Spencer) Devenney and Dan (Heather Adams); her grandchildren, Adam Smith, Addison, Owen, Rosalie and Oliver Devenney; and her caring partner, Ernie Swanson. Also mourning her passing are her siblings Keith (Louise) Olson, Darcy (Patricia) Olson, Rodney Olson, Brian (Tammy) Olson, Leeann (Karl) Szoke, Alan Olson, Cynthia (Allen) Hart; brother-in-law Murray Sopher and other close in-laws; numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

She was predeceased by her parents, Harold and Geraldine Olson; sister Lori Sopher; and husband Neil Harbidge.

Barb will be fondly and lovingly remembered for her love and devotion to family and for her strong work ethic.

The family would like to thank the doctors, nurses and staff of the Pincher Creek Health Centre and Lynn and Candice from home care for their support and assistance in keeping Barb comfortable in her final month.

A memorial service was held at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Pincher Creek on Aug 1, 2015. Interment followed at Fairview Cemetery.

Annual gun show and Going Wild offer opportunities for hunting and tracking enthusiasts

By Brad Quarin Outdoor enthusiasts should have a field day when two events — the Crowsnest Pass Pistol Club Annual Gun Show and Going Wild — return to Crowsnest Sports Complex in Coleman on Saturday.

Special guest Terry Grant, star of the reality TV series Mantracker, will have a booth at Going Wild to promote his book, Mantracking: The Ultimate Guide to Tracking Man or Beast, after leading tracking courses in the Pass on Thursday and Friday.

The gun show provides a chance to see, buy and sell firearms, ammunition, other hunting items and accessories.

Proper licences, with the accompanying safety training, are required to purchase a firearm.

Some new vendors will join the event, with over 40 vendors and 105 tables in all, says chairman Mark Scholpp.

Admission to the gun show is $3, and children under 12 accompanied by a parent get in for free.

Mark says the gun show dates back to the 1980s, and the Pistol Club eventually took responsibility for it.

The club is locally based, with some members living in Pincher Creek and British Columbia. Besides holding the annual gun show, the club meets for weekly shoots.

The gun show will be complemented by Going Wild, held at the same time at Crowsnest Sports Complex.

Going Wild will feature a number of vendors who work with wildlife and conservation, and the event will educate the public and be suitable for the whole family.

BearSmart will have a booth at Going Wild, says co-ordinator Christy Pool. They will supply information about what to do in an encounter with a bear and how to identify a bear.

The bear dogs will make appearances, and people can get their photos taken with them and the grizzly mounts.

Going Wild will also welcome the Alberta Birds of Prey Centre, Hillcrest Fish and Game, taxidermists and more. An interactive fishing video, like a video game, should occupy the children.

Terry Grant’s course will teach people how to recognize tracks — any kind of tracks, human or animal. It’s an eighthour course in which participants will also learn about outdoor safety and identifying plants.

Terry is from southern Alberta and has filmed his show in Crowsnest Pass before. The course costs $250 per person, with Christy taking registration at 403-563-8723.

Bringing Investment Home project earns national recognition Bringing Investment Home — a partnership project of Community Futures Alberta Southwest, Alberta SouthWest Regional Alliance, and Community Futures Crowsnest Pass — received award recognition at the Business Retention and Expansion International conference, held at Bridgewater, N.S., in June.

The Alberta SouthWest partnership received one of two awards that recognized project excellence and community impact. The City of Wellington, Ont., won for a BREI project for a population of over 50,000 and the Alberta SouthWest partnership won for a project with population under 50,000.

Natalie Gibson, president of InnoVisions and Associates, who worked with the southwestern Alberta communities, travelled to Nova Scotia to make a presentation about the project and to accept the award on behalf of the partnership.

“This was an interactive and participatory project,” says Bev Thornton, executive director of Alberta SouthWest Regional Eco-

nomic Development Alliance. “The success is attributed to our businesses and municipal leaders who provided a lot of energy, support and ideas.”

The project developed innovative approaches to investment attraction, and results greatly exceeded expectations. It is estimated that the year-long project generated and supported about $7 million of new and expanded business investment in the region.

Seventy-nine business consultation visits were conducted, resulting in 105 referrals and action items for businesses and organizations.

Twenty businesses were identified as having potential for foreign direct investment.

Thirty-nine consultations were held with municipalities to identify unique priorities for each community and to define assets, gaps, opportunities and roadblocks that affect investment attraction.

Fifty business success stories were identified for inclusion in future marketing of regional

opportunities. Leading investment opportunity sectors were identified, as well as key challenges and assets.

James Tessier, the project manager, acknowledges that it was the strength of the collaborative partnership that led to its success.

“Each organization brought their skills and resources to the table, leveraging their knowledge and their networks to make this project work,” he says.

“Tremendous stakeholder engagement throughout the region was realized, with the participation of 46 representatives from municipal government, business and economic organizations committing time to the project, learning new skills to assist their community, and providing valuable input to move the project forward. The business consultations were a success, and matchmaking opportunities were identified, many of which are ongoing as the project now enters its second year.”

Step back in time at Cowley cemetery

By Farley Wuth Who were some of the early people to settle on the southwestern corner of the Canadian Prairies?

What frontier industries attracted them to this area — was it ranching and farming or coal mining?

What impact did those entrepreneurs from long ago have upon the developing settlements? How did the settlers adjust to their new surroundings?

These are but a few of the questions to be reflected upon at Pincher Creek and District Historical Society’s annual Historic Graveyard Tour, to be held at Cowley Community Cemetery the evening of Friday, Aug. 14. This date was selected because it is the new moon night.

The cemetery, located a short distance northwest of the village of Cowley, overlooks the south banks of the Crowsnest River and features a commanding view to the north. From there, one can partake in the breathtaking vistas of the Livingstone Range, the North Fork district and the Porcupine Hills. The rural location is a pristine setting for a cemetery that honours not only our pioneers but our more recent arrivals as well.

This well-utilized resting spot has nearly 300 burials, accompanied by more than 50 Cowley-area people remembered on the memorial wall. Most of the people interred were from Cowley and outlying rural districts such as Tennessee, Tanner, North Fork, Mountain Mill, Lundbreck, Fire Grove, Burmis and Beaver Creek. These areas all bespeak our vibrant agricultural heritage.

Our popular event offers historical re-enactments of many of the pioneers who are buried here.

This re-enactment tour is conducted in a dignified and respectful manner, honouring the history and contributions of those early settlers. Historical society staff and volunteers will conduct readings at selected headstones that chronicle those frontier times.

Remembering the pioneers Here are a few historical highlights from our upcoming presentation: • The 1897-98 arrival of the Crowsnest line of the Canadian Pacific Railway featured in the lives of Doris and George Edward Baines. George was the second generation of CPR workers at Cowley.

His father, Arthur Edward Baines, was the section foreman at this railway depot from 1903 to 1919.

George continued that railway tradition, and his tenure as the Cowley section foreman was just one of several industry appointments he received.

His first work was that of a stable hand for Dr. Cooper Johnson, who was one of the early medical

doctors in nearby Lundbreck. The Baines family immigrated to Western Canada from England just after the April 1903 Frank Slide.

• Buried here is one of the earliest people from Pincher Creek, Mountain Mill and Cowley itself — Peter McEwen, who incidentally was Doris Baines’s father. This pioneer was one of nine North West Mounted Police officers who established the Mounties’ Horse Ranch along the Pincher Creek in the late summer of 1878.

Following his retirement from the force, he established a homestead at Mountain Mill, home of the area’s first logging operation. Also working as a freighter, he later established a livery stable in Cowley. It flourished in the 1910s and 1920s, due in part to the Crowsnest branch of the CPR, whose depot was featured at what also was called the Eighth Siding. Peter McEwen’s biography is closely linked with those frontier days of our local history.

• Ellen and Thomas Madden are popularly remembered as the original proprietors of Lundbreck’s Windsor Hotel. This prominent landmark was a centre of the settlement’s business community for over half a century.

Archival images show that this two-storey frame structure also housed a dining room and bar, glassed in by large windows. Its most unique architectural feature, however, was its exterior outhouse.

This too had a second storey, which was accessed by a wooden bridge from the upper floor. This access ensured that hotel guests did not have to travel through the bar below if they required the outhouse during the night.

Thomas Madden’s business sense ensured that the Windsor Hotel indeed flourished.

The program at the cemetery itself starts at 10 p.m. on Aug. 14. People who wish to carpool out to the site are asked to meet by 9:30 p.m. at Kootenai Brown Pioneer Village in Pincher Creek. Admission to the evening’s program is only $10 per person, and light refreshments are included.

A new view for TMRC

By Brad Quarin The Turtle Mountain Riding Club has a new and better perspective on its members’ activities, literally.

This summer a new timing booth was added to the north side of the club’s arena, found down the old Frank Road.

“I think it makes it way easier for the people who are timing and announcing to see,” says member Edward Dingreville.

The club is a non-profit riding group for all ages from Crowsnest Pass, Pincher Creek and area, meeting under Turtle Mountain.

It had a timing booth 40 years ago, standing on poles on the opposite side of the arena, lost over time. Since its demise, timers of the club’s events have had to sit on the deck of the storage shed and look through a fence, Edward says.

However, last year they began talking about an addition that would make things easier.

With money raised from the Lethbridge casino, the group was able to obtain a contractor to construct a new timing booth. The booth is now nearly finished. Next year, siding will be added, but the booth is already in use and is sturdier than the one from 40 years ago.

The booth will be used so people can time events such as barrel races and pole bending, keep records and make announcements, maintaining a flow. “We want things to move forward,” Edward says.

The club also wants its children to have fun.

They will be involved in timing and announcing, but mainly, they will be competing.
