This week’s front page photo is an example of why I am seldom without my camera.

One never knows when a perfect image will appear and disappear just as quickly.

Little Ridge Flundra of Twin Butte stole the show at the Pincher Creek Pro Rodeo last weekend, and Niki’s act was loaded with precious moments.

Ridge has known rodeo all his life. With his mom on the entertainment end of the business and his dad a saddle bronc rider, it will be interesting to watch him grow.

You could hear the oohs and ahhs when the tyke stepped into the arena Saturday afternoon with his pony, Tonto. He’s been part of Niki’s act in many places and in many venues, but to do it for family, friends and community is completely different.

He showed some grit as well — he was walking on a broken foot.

drew the crowd to their feet for the entire performance. Local veteran Pierre Comeau stood front and centre while Niki, her horses and finally her son paid tribute to our country, our flag and our veterans.

There was a lump in my throat as Ridge and Pierre saluted one another at the end. It was definitely a Kleenex moment.

In a flash, these moments are gone. Capturing them is a photographer’s challenge and brings immense satisfaction.

It was difficult to choose the front-page photo this week because there were hundreds to look at, and many captured a split second that will never be repeated.

Kudos to the Carneys Just a few lines to compliment a remarkable couple, Barry and Sophie Carney.

I have known Barry since he was a little boy. His grandma was worried to death he’d never amount to a thing — “All he would eat was wieners!”

Grandma Mary had chickens and sold eggs. One time Howard stopped by for eggs. He had a load of straw on the pickup. By golly, when he got home he had a big red rooster on the bales and had to return it to Mary!

Barry and Sophie both have met a real need with their catering. Our ladies clubs used to be available for weddings and other events. We got too long in the tooth to keep it up, and they were sure welcome to take our place! They even help at branding time — we old girls don’t have to make 20 pies for the occasion. Times have changed.

They did a beautiful job a few nights ago, roasting a pig and all the trimmings at Vista Village. Sophie made a cake to die for.

Thank you to all the volunteers who helped with the event. How we all appreciate the thoughtful gesture! The “golden years” aren’t too bad — hope this kindness continues; small-town hospitality isn’t all that bad.

Her smile was brought about by Mayor Don Anderberg, who said, “You have a little more wisdom than I do.” He brought greetings from the town, and lodge manager Millie Loeffler shared good wishes from the Governor General, Prime Minister Stephen Harper, Reeve Brian Hammond of the MD of Pincher Creek, as well as everyone at Crestview. When asked the secret to her longevity, she replied, again sharing her smile, “A day at a time.”

They thought it was neat and took photographs.

Valentine’s Day is observed in Croatia, though in a smaller and less materialistic way. “I actually liked it,” she said. “You don’t feel so bad about yourself when you’re single.”

While Croatia doesn’t really celebrate Halloween, she got to experience the Croatian equivalent, Carnival, in February. She dressed up for the occasion and saw many costumes.

Arianna’s travels were not limited to Croatia and Austria, as she was able to visit numerous other countries around Europe in May. She took the “Euro tour” with 85 other Rotary exchange students and three chaperones.

“It was pretty crazy, but it was really fun,” she said.

The group spent a day in Cologne, Germany, where she found the cathedral beautiful.

Crossing over to Brussels, Belgium, she found that city too modern for her tastes, so it wasn’t as exciting as what she saw next.

A taste of European history was found farther north in Bruges, which she said has more castles than all other places in Europe combined.

“All the houses almost looked like gingerbread houses,” she said.

“It was like a fairy-tale town. I loved it.”

She was impressed with the Eiffel Tower in Paris and loved the distinct culture of Barcelona.

Back in November, Arianna had visited a wall in Zagreb where people are invited to write “Before

I die …” She wrote on the wall that she’d like to visit Italy, so she was thankful she was able to do that.

Her favourite places in Italy were Cinque Terre and Venice.

Cinque Terre is made up of five villages found on cliffs by the sea. She found it and Venice very pretty.

On her last day in Croatia, Zagreb resident Lorena Stastny returned after taking the Rotary exchange to Pincher Creek.

The two hadn’t seen each other since before Arianna left Canada, so they went for lunch and coffee.

As the end of her Rotary presentation, Arianna proudly showed off the magazine article she had written. She wrote it in English but it was translated into Croatian, and it was good practice for a profession she will now pursue.

Music can be found across the river

By Brad Quarin Before the summer ends and students go back to school, the whole family can take in a musical experience with Festival ATR in the Piikani Nation.

Festival ATR — standing for Across the River — is being held for a third year, on Aug. 29.

“It’s very open and very relaxed,” says founder Kirby Smith.

The idea of the event, held across the Oldman River, is to have “an open festival.”

“All genres are welcome to perform,” he says.

In the past, the festival has featured country, hip-hop, blues, gospel, rock and traditional aboriginal singers.

Anyone of any age is welcome, including people from outside the reserve.

“The festival is family-based,” Kirby says.

When he started the event, he imagined it as a chance for fledgling musicians to perform for an audience. It still has amateurs singing and playing instruments, with his daughter singing.

Other musicians come from Calgary, Lethbridge, British Columbia and the Piikani, Blood and Siksika reserves. The Métis are invited, and Kirby also aspires to bring in international music such as Jamaican reggae.

The Smiths sponsor a free meal and last year there was a fireworks display, with a possibility of that being seen again.

The festival will start around 3 p.m. on Aug. 29, with bands typically starting after 8. The music goes for as long as there are people there. In the first year, the festival ended at 3 a.m., and the second year it ended at 1 a.m.

The event is completely free and can be found 12 kilometres from Highway 3, by taking Summerview Road and turning north.

My turn to become lead happened after lunch when we moved from the gravel and sandy creek side to the grassy areas. At this point the sign changed as well.

Identifying marks on fallen trees, broken twigs, silvering or greening became the clues we were looking for.

We worked our way, crossing through and over the creek a couple of times following sign. We then crossed the road and continued to search for sign and tracks through the long grass and trees until we reached the “finish line.”

Terry then presented each of us with a signed copy of his new book, Mantracking: The Ultimate Guide to Tracking Man or Beast.

We ended the day at the Rum

I was surprised to learn that two of the women in the group had never watched the Mantracker series. Both agreed that they would have to check it out. Also, Shawn and Abbey had arrived in Calgary only the day before from San Diego, specifically for this course, and were headed home the following day.

All in all it was a fantastic day, full of learning and fun and meeting some great people. Having now completed my first level of tracking, I would like to look into taking the second level, which takes place in the backcountry, not far from Terry’s home in High River.

Savi Houldin prepares to hit the drink as her turn in the dunk tank ends in success for the ball thrower. Savi is a Pincher Creek Spray Park Society member and a Canyon School teacher. Grade 4 student Jaxon Shenton was elated to hit the target and dunk the teacher. It was all in good fun and part of the Pincher Creek Legion Kids Carnival on Saturday, which raised a welcome donation for the proposed spray park.

As we close out an amazing year, the club sends huge thanks to these people who helped make the year complete: Lexi Mensaghi for marking the steer record books, DonaLee Smith for marking the heifer project books, Blaine Pickard for marking the sheep project books, and Deidra Schoening for marking the diaries.

Parent Link campaigns for indoor playground

By Brad Quarin A dream for an expanded Pincher Creek Parent Link Family Centre is being chased by Parent Link staff.

Executive director La Vonne Rideout is launching a capital campaign for the centre, which provides parent education and family support.

More funding would support more programs.

“Pincher Creek is an amazing community,” La Vonne says, and she hopes people will step forward to help.

Pincher Creek Parent Link has benefited from more operational funding to hire new staff.

Having the money for employees to run new programs, Parent Link now needs support for renovations, materials and equipment for those programs. The aim is to make sure Parent Link programming remains free.

Parent Link envisions having an indoor playground at the Family Centre in Ranchland Mall, a place for children to drop in and run and play during the winter.

There would be a big climber as well as a tiny one for babies and toddlers, and a mini kitchen and woodworking bench. Shelving and tables are also needed.

La Vonne says they hope to start new literacy programs and mentoring programs for breastfeeding moms.

Pincher Creek staff have also visited other Parent Link centres to draw inspiration for new ideas.

One idea being toyed with is a “child-minding co-op” for taking care of children while parents are Christmas shopping.

The goal for the capital campaign is to raise $130,000.

This summer, La Vonne has begun meeting with service groups and businesses and sending letters. She will be looking at more grant applications.

If residents wish to help, private donations are welcome and Parent Link is always interested in hearing what programs its clients want, La Vonne says.

The capital campaign may take months or years, but ideally it will end with another grand opening of the Family Centre.

Huckleberry hunt is on at Castle Mountain

By Brad Quarin If a bucketful of huckleberries sounds tempting to you, the Huckleberry Festival at Castle Mountain will be a dream come true.

The annual festival, held by Castle Mountain Resort and the Castle Mountain Community Association, returns Aug. 28 and 29.

“It’s a nice family day for parents, grandparents and their kids,” says Fraser Stewart, president of the community association.

During the festival, the chairlifts take visitors to the top of Huckleberry Mountain to pick the delicious fruit.

The festival begins with the opening of the T-Bar Pub at 5 p.m. on Aug. 28, with a campfire that evening.

On Aug. 29, the berry picking gets underway. After an $8 huckleberry pancake breakfast at the day lodge at 9 a.m., the chairlift starts at 10 a.m.

The lift continues running until 2:30 p.m., and costs $15 for adults and $10 for youth from six to 17, with ages five and under riding for free.

These fees go to the resort to pay for the diesel and staff required to run the chairlift, Fraser says.

Any money raised for the community association would support the many ski clubs at Castle Mountain, to buy equipment such as first-aid items and clocks. Fraser says there’s a diverse set of clubs for different age groups, race teams, freestyle skiers and the disabled.

The association has a history of holding fundraisers to help make Castle Mountain what it is, purchasing gates and electronics for ski races and equipment for first aid and avalanches.

Lunch and supper will also be served during the day, with lunch consisting of hamburgers. The pig roast at the day lodge at 6 p.m. costs $18 for adults and $10 for ages 12 and under.

The potatoes, corn and onions are donated by the Perry family of Coaldale, who are big supporters of Castle Mountain and whose kids skied here, Fraser says.

Fraser estimates that between 500 and more than 1,000 people normally attend. The Huckleberry Festival draws people from around southern Alberta, including non-skiers.

In “one way or another,” he says, everything about the festival supports Castle Mountain.

Play it safe in the sun

By Valerie Fraser With summer heat in full swing and the days longer, it’s natural to want to get out and enjoy the warmth of the sun. Although the sun is the top source of vitamin D — which helps our bodies absorb calcium for stronger, healthier bones — too much exposure can cause irreversible skin damage and skin cancer.

Did you know that just one blistering sunburn as a child or teenager increases your risk of developing melanoma (the most aggressive type of skin cancer) later in life? And a sunburn is only one risk factor for skin cancer.

Tanned skin is also a sign of damaged skin.

Even though the skin can repair surface damage like a tan or sunburn, ultraviolet damage to skin cells and DNA remains and builds up over time.

So, it may take years to become apparent.

Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer in Canada; however, it’s also one of the easiest to prevent. Use SunSense when you’re outside to reduce your risk of developing skin cancer. This includes: — Covering up. Wear loose-fitting, lightweight clothing; a wide-brimmed hat; and sunglasses.

— Using sunscreen properly. Generously apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a sun protection factor of 30, and reapply often.

— Limiting direct exposure to the sun. Plan your activities so you’re not outdoors between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m., when UV rays are strongest.

Road Watch hosts a hike

By Brad Quarin Sinister 7 runners weren’t the only visitors who set out on foot to tour Crowsnest Pass this July.

Late in the month, Road Watch in the Pass took members and international students of the Wild Rockies Field Institute on a hike to see environmentally important places in Crowsnest Pass.

The Wild Rockies Field Institute, based in Montana, is concerned with landscape conservation, and this was the group’s first highway collision mitigation tour.

“It’s really cool to get boots on the ground, and get a small-scale perspective of what we’re studying on the big scale,” says instructor Ben Johnson.

The group looked at areas relevant to the Collision Count project and the efforts of Road Watch in the Pass to establish collision mitigation on Highway 3.

Walking along Highway 3, they discovered bones, likely from deer.

“It was really shocking to learn about the impact of roadkill,” says Lindsay Ashton, a Montana student. “We don’t really think twice about it, so trying to now think about the impact … is really significant.”

Golden summer for Frank Slide Interpretive Centre

By Erin Fairhurst It has been a busy summer for the staff at the Frank Slide Interpretive Centre, and area manager Monica Field says visitor numbers are up quite a bit from last year.

“In speaking with other attractions, their numbers are up, too,” she says. “I’m not sure if it’s because of the Canadian dollar, but people seem to be staying home and enjoying what we have here.”

Not only is the centre enjoying increased traffic, but it also recently received a Reader’s Choice

Award from RVwest magazine, based in British Columbia. Readers in both Canada and the United States were surveyed to determine their favourite events, attractions and destinations, and the Frank Slide Interpretive Centre was awarded gold for best historical site in Alberta.

Monica says the centre is “very popular with RVwest readers” and with RVers in general.

“We have a very good setup for RVs,” she explains. “There is lots of space, and once they get here they just love the centre.”

The Royal Tyrrell Museum in Drumheller

took home the platinum award, while the Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Village in Tofield and the Reynolds-Alberta Museum in Westaskiwin were awarded silver and bronze respectively.

“We are quite proud and grateful,” says Monica. “We’ve had a really great summer.”

The team at the Frank Slide Interpretive Centre won’t be slowing down anytime soon. They are busy gearing up for Alberta Culture Days at the end of September, when the centre will host some special events and admission will be free.

More trails for UROC With great excitement, the United Riders of Crowsnest announce that the mountain bike club will receive $58,922 under the federal government’s Canada 150 Community Infrastructure Program.

The official announcement was made by MP John Barlow on July 31 at a ceremony at the historic Coleman Museum. UROC board members Andrew Fairhurst, Jim Lucas, John Redekopp and Dave Whitten were on hand to thank Mr. Barlow and acknowledge this massive contribution towards trail building and ecotourism projects in Crowsnest Pass.

Six communities in southwestern Alberta will benefit from the federal program, and Mr. Barlow said the contribution to UROC was not only of “great importance to the community of the Crowsnest Pass, but to all communities in Macleod.”

UROC plans to use the new funds for expanding the existing trails in the Pass Powderkeg network.

The club is fresh from hosting the second annual Bootleg Bike Fest and Rumhead Enduro, and president Andrew Fairhurst says he is thrilled with the UROC’s momentum this summer.

“Our ultimate goal is to make the Crowsnest Pass an internationally recognized mountain bike destination, and I truly believe we have the potential to make that happen,” he says.

Anthony ‘Tony’ W. Feregotto 1945 – 2015

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Anthony William Feregotto of Coleman, beloved husband of Beverly, brother of Rocky (Iris) and brother-in-law of Deanna Vare. After a courageous battle with cancer, he was called to be with our Lord on Aug. 10, 2015, his 70th birthday.

Tony was born on Aug. 10, 1945, in Blairmore, to proud parents Martha and Anthony Feregotto. He was raised to be a hard worker and also to take every opportunity to enjoy life. He grew into a strong, handsome young man who won the heart of a lovely young lady, Beverly George. They pledged their love for one another in holy matrimony on Sept.

30, 1972. They were blessed with 43 years of marriage, during which they made countless beautiful memories.

Tony was employed by B & L Explosives at the mines in British Columbia before taking early retirement. At this point, he took a part-time position with Volker Stevin driving a plow truck.

Tony had many hobbies throughout his life, such as camping, snowmobiling, playing pool and taking stunning photos. He and Bev travelled extensively and logged many miles going to antique car shows with his 1954 Ford Glass Top. At these shows he met and made lifelong friends. His passion for antique cars led him to be an active member of the Crowsnest Antique and Classic Automobile Club and Nifty Fifty’s Car Club of Calgary.

Tony could often be found spending time with their dog, Max, whom he loved very much, or indulging in his favourite food: pasta, pasta and more pasta! Tony also enjoyed coffee breaks with his buddies, and he spent many happy hours helping to build Rocky’s first 1956 Ford Victoria.

He was well known for his wonderful sense of humour and for being a “fix-it” man who could always be counted on to lend a helping hand. Tony was a very special husband, brother and friend. He will be dearly missed, fondly remembered, and will remain forever in our hearts.

Left to mourn his passing and celebrate his life are his wife, Beverly; his brother, Rocky (Iris); his sister-in-law, Deanna Vare; his nieces and nephews, Marcy (Jeff) McIver, Stacy (Flo) Delepao, Melissa (Len) Sparks, Collin Vare, Duane Vare, Terry “T.J.” (Megan) George and Ashley (Travis) George; his extended family; as well as a multitude of friends.

He was predeceased by his parents, Martha and Anthony Feregotto; his uncle, William Sherring; his father-in-law, John George; his mother-in-law, Jean George; and his brother-in-law, Gary George.

A memorial service was held at Fantin’s Funeral Chapel in Blairmore on Aug. 14, 2015, with Rev. Nicky Keyworth officiating.

By Brad Quarin Kootenai Brown Pioneer Village celebrated the grand opening of the Country Store in June, marking the remodelling of the old gift shop.

The new name was selected to convey its nature. “People would have an idea of what it is,” says Colleen Casey-Cyr, president of the Pincher Creek and District Historical Society. “It’s not your average gift shop.”

The Country Store has consignors offering traditional crafts such as knitting, crocheting and soaps, all local.

There are also tiny wooden houses that children can assemble, old-fashioned candy and “awesome history books,” Colleen says.

The Country Store is meant to fit the look and feel of the museum. It contains fixtures from the

museum’s collection, and the lighting was altered to make it look like a real country store.

The remodelling also saw the gift shop increase in size by one-third, making it easier to move around in.

Nearly 100 people attended the grand opening, more than expected for such a scorching day, Colleen says.

The visitors did some shopping and made positive comments, some saying that Pincher Creek needed a store like it and noticing it had more space. The person who won the door prize, a birdhouse, was also thrilled.

The Country Store will be open year-round, with the same hours as Kootenai Brown Pioneer Village.

Storing feed in a bear-resistant container has the potential to reduce human-bear conflicts. Bear-resistant bins have a bear-resistant latching mechanism, a steel reinforced lid or rim, and impact-resistant plastic.

Waterton Biosphere offers new program When a bear finds garbage and other unnatural food sources in a yard, it may lead to a food-conditioned bear. Over time, this bear may associate food with humans and may become very bold and dangerous in an attempt to get food near people.

Bears drawn into the yard by garbage may then be tempted to stick around for pet food, fruit trees, garden plants, compost, livestock, grain or any number of attractants in the yard site.

In southwestern Alberta, 80 per cent of all black bear incidents reported to the provincial government in 2014 were related to attractants. Of these incidents, 46 per cent were related to garbage. These conflicts come with financial costs and increased safety risks for people. They also impact large-carnivore populations, as animals involved in conflict may be relocated or killed.

To mitigate these damages and costs, Waterton Biosphere Reserve has started a bear-resistant garbage bin program for both garbage and smallfeed storage. The program aims to reduce household garbage, pet food and livestock feed as attractants to both black and grizzly bears by offering bear-resistant storage options. Long term, WBR hopes these efforts will help reduce conflicts between humans and large carnivores, and associated costs, on farms, ranches and acreages, and in hamlets.

What makes bear-resistant garbage bins different than regular garbage bins?

A certified bear-resistant garbage bin has been tested by captive grizzly bears at the Grizzly and Wolf Discovery Center in Montana and approved by the Interagency Grizzly Bear Committee. The bins offered by WBR are made by Toter. They are double-walled poly, and have a steel-reinforced rim and a self-latching mechanism that bears cannot open. Like most garbage bins, they are on wheels so they’re easy

to move around for either garbage or animal feed storage. They are warrantied for up to three years.

How does the program work?

WBR received grant funds to help subsidize bin costs. Bear-resistant garbage bins will be available for purchase at a reduced price: $90 for 64-gallon bins and $100 for 95-gallon bins. A 64-gallon bin can hold about three large garbage bags. Remember, if the lid cannot latch, the bin is not bear-resistant. Purchase a bin that is the right size for your needs.

The cost-sharing program is offered to people who live on farms, ranches, acreages and hamlets in Cardston County and the municipalities of Pincher Creek, Ranchland and Willow Creek. Rodeo highlights The 22nd annual Pincher Creek Pro Rodeo was filled with chills and spills and even a few moments worthy of pulling out a hanky to wipe your eyes. Cole Rutledge of Cowley and Kyle Thomson of Lundbreck finished in the money — Cole with a 4.7-second go at steer wrestling for fifth place, and Kyle with 81.5 points in saddle bronc for a fifth-place tie.
