This is a little corner, indeed. It seems the smaller the space, the more difficult it is to write to.

Through MLA Pat Stier, local media were invited to meet Wildrose party leader Brian Jean over coffee last week. It was interesting to hear his vision described firsthand, and his thoughts on challenges currently faced

by Albertans.

Because the space I have this week wouldn’t do justice to the conversation, I’ll hold off on the details until next week.

Federal and provincial politics, controversy, drought and forest fires have dominated the hard-news front this month. Despite the August snow, I believe there is still more positive than negative to be found in southwestern Alberta.

As Shootin’ the Breeze approaches its fourth anniversary next month, this is a reminder of the vision it began with — to create a publication that focuses on the good things happening in our area and presents them in a neighbourly fashion.

We are surrounded by positive people, and are fortunate that both Crowsnest Pass and Pincher Creek are vibrant communities that support a myriad of interesting events and are simply beautiful to live in.

Occasionally I take some flak for choosing not to publish submitted material that doesn’t match our objective of positive and agreeable presentation.

Items written from a negative view aren’t simply discarded, though.

Often they provide ideas for looking at something from a different angle and presenting it in a manner that represents both sides of a story.

Written with a positive slant, we certainly do include more traditional news than we did four years ago.

Shootin’ the Breeze wasn’t intended to replace other local news sources.

Our vision is simply to share the best of what is going on around us.

The Pincher Creek and District Mustangs Football Society invites any players from grades 4 to 10 to register for football this fall. Registrations will be accepted until Sept. 10.

Pass athlete finds and pushes her limits

The race will mark the end of the season for the Crowsnest Pass athlete, who finished as the top female soloist in the Chinook Half Iron Triathlon earlier this month. She has become an accomplished athlete in this field and has developed more skills and more of a self-identity.

“Before I started, I thought … I pretty much knew who I am, where I’m at in my life,” she says. “I did my first race, and I’m like, I have no idea who I am.”

She had things to learn and limits to push.

She was 30 when she first tried triathlon 10 years ago. It began with her vow to run a marathon before she reached that age. Having done that, she sought the next challenge.

She had a vague concept of triathlon — a combination of swimming, cycling and running — from TV. “I remember … the image of somebody pushing themselves to the utmost limits,” she says. “That’s so amazing.”

However, there were challenges starting out. Julie was a novice in swimming, having had her first lesson at 29. She had a mountain bike, but

not a road bike, and while she had run in a marathon, she hadn’t thought about training to run faster.

With time, she went from learning how to swim to tackling bigger distances and more intense feats, with the guidance of a coach.

“I found it so appealing that I could set the bar for myself, set a goal, and then you work hard and you achieve it,” she says.

Triathlon became her hobby for that appeal, as well as the health benefits and opportunities to meet other athletes.

Of the three aspects of triathlon, she considers cycling to be her strength. “The biking around here is really good,” she says. Cyclists are courteous to each other in Crowsnest Pass, and the winds are very powerful.

That means she learned how to handle her bike, and less windy communities are a breeze. “It’s like unleashing the beast,” she says, chuckling.

The hardest part in triathlon is the running, particularly the last 10 kilometres.

“I coach some athletes, and I always tell them it all comes down to the last three kilometres of the run, because that’s when you are in so much pain — physically and mentally,” she says. “The finish is still three

kilometres away.”

You feel great in the first parts of the triathlon, but the length of the competition eventually takes its toll.

Julie says she has learned to “zone out.”

There were about 200 competitors at the Chinook Half Iron Triathlon at the beginning of this month.

It was called a half marathon because the distances weren’t standard. It involved a 2.2-kilometre swim, a 95-kilometre bicycle race and a 21.1-kilometre run.

Julie finished with a time of five hours 27 minutes 38 seconds, becoming the top female soloist of all age categories and the 10th soloist, including the men.

It was a unique experience, because with the laps she could look back and see who was behind her. She was happy with her result.

Previously, she won the Chinook Half Iron Triathlon last year in Calgary and a sprint-distance triathlon in Mexico last May. In Mexico, she was proud to be the first woman out of the water.

She has also finished full-distance triathlons, which entail 3.8 kilometres of swimming, 180 kilometres of cycling and a marathon.

In Penticton, she will once again aim to win.

Rock ’n’ roll road always leads back home

By Erin Fairhurst Alex Shenton looks weary as he strolls through the door of Harvest Coffeehouse in Pincher Creek. It’s easy to understand why.

The 27-year-old frontman of Bastard Poetry has been hard at work promoting the band’s second album, including the launch of a new video for their single “Barn Burner.”

So has life on the road caught up with him?

“Nah,” he says, dropping his head back and running a hand through his bedraggled, long blond hair. “I just came from an appointment at the bank.

Banks are exhausting.”

Fair enough. But so much for those assumptions about life in a rock band.

In fact, Alex and Bastard Poetry seem to defy a lot of assumptions about life as working musicians, songwriting and their music in general. There’s a duality in nearly everything Bastard Poetry does — from balancing the business of

running a band with the artistry of making music, to wrestling with personal authenticity versus the spectacle of performance, to assessing the commercial and the creative.

By Alex’s own apt admission, he is “a man of two minds.”

Take their new album, Something That Makes it Beautiful to Live. The central theme of the album is family, love and the beauty that emerges from human connection. Its inspiration, though, came from hard life experiences, turbulent periods of unemployment and a bad breakup.

So how do those experiences shed light on what makes it beautiful to live?

“By seeing the people who are still there for you,” explains Alex. “By being lifted back up.”

If there’s any added pressure performing in front of a hometown crowd, it doesn’t faze him. Instead, he enjoys coming home so that the people who have supported him from the very beginning can see the band’s progress and evolution.

“I want people to see we’ve been working hard.”

Ironically, it’s his biggest supporters that inspire the most nerves.

“My family is crazy supportive,” he says, but adds that playing at an intimate family show this summer, at a friend’s barn, was nerve-racking. “It was the most nervous I’ve been in a long time, but I’ve also never played a better show.”

His mom, Brenda, is Alex’s self-proclaimed biggest fan.

“He’s very creative, and always has been, ever since he was little,” she says.

“He has always marched to his own drum.”

Brenda — along with Alex’s older brother and sister-in-law and their young children — went out to cheer on Bastard Poetry at their acoustic show in Twin Butte last week. The show was an exercise in restraint for the normally hard-hitting musicians, but far from being lacklustre, Alex and his bandmates pulsed with a harnessed energy that flowed into their performance.

Lead guitarist Jesse Kane seemed to vibrate as he showed off an array of skills and provided backup vocals. Bassist Cole Jordan (who is retiring from the band in the fall to pursue a master’s degree in psychology) kept up a steady strum, anchoring his more energetic bandmates. And drummer Jim Hunter, who took the lead behind the scenes on the “Barn Burner” video, alternately drove his bandmates with the beat, and reigned them back in.

All in all, the Saskatoon-based band is a cohesive group, and the considerable amount of performance experience they have together shows. The show’s two sets included a variety of Bastard Poetry originals, covers and even a sweet dedication to Alex’s mom.

“This is one of my mom’s favorites,” Alex said before launching into a raggedly powerful rendition of Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah.” He paused as he scanned the room. “Of course, she’s outside right now…”

Sure enough, Brenda was seeing off her older son and grandkids so they wouldn’t get to bed too late. Proof that rock ’n’ roll families are normal, too. Not surprisingly, Brenda was sure to make it back inside to hear Alex’s shout-out, and was even on hand to offer a hug after he’d finished.

The image was a sweet one: the long-haired, tattooed rocker getting a hug from his proud mom. It brought to mind another image — the cover art of Bastard Poetry’s latest album — of Alex’s young niece and his grandmother walking hand in hand on the family ranch. Another piece in the puzzle of the album’s central theme.

Alex pens all of Bastard Poetry’s lyrics himself, and writes almost every day.

He gestures to his phone, which contains hundreds of voice recordings. Sometimes a song will write itself in 10 minutes, he says. Other times, lyrics and verses come together like a patchwork quilt, in pieces.

He says he identifies more with being a songwriter than a performer, but admits the struggle of making a living as a musician, and the pressure of managing the band, can take a toll on his creativity.

“It’s hard to find that balance,” he says. “Sometimes I just need to shut everything off, and do something else.”

This summer, for instance, he took to teaching himself piano, worked on a friend’s house and actively tried to turn off the analytical side of his mind so that he could recharge the batteries on the creative side.

As for Alex’s hopes for the future, once again, he is a man of two minds.

“The dream is to, of course, play in that sold-out arena … to be part of that spectacle,” he says. “But then there’s also something about playing music to your family in a barn. It doesn’t get much better than that.”

“I’d like to thank all our dedicated customers,” says co-owner Harry Kuryluk.

“Without them, we wouldn’t have been here.”

Crowsnest Vacuum and Sewing Centre offers sales and repairs of vacuum cleaners, along with sewing material, notions and mending. The business also sells tickets for Greyhound Canada.

Vacuums, sewing and busing sound like a unique combination, and these aspects of the business were inherited.

The Kuryluks purchased a pre-existing vacuum and sewing business in Crowsnest Mall back in 1995. They had wanted to go into business.

“Opportunity knocked,” says co-owner Grant Kuryluk.

In 1998, the Kuryluks moved the business to its current location at 2022 129th St., in a building which was a furniture and appliance store with Greyhound Canada.

They didn’t expect that the shop would last for decades. “It’s quite an accomplishment. Most businesses don’t even get this far,” Harry says.

This achievement took a lot of hard work and determination. “Whether it takes you 12 hours that day or 15 hours that day, it’s immaterial. You’re married to your business,” Grant says.

Crowsnest Vacuum and Sewing Centre enjoys the support of a clientele that stretches from Cranbrook to Lethbridge. There are few repair shops for vacuums and sewing machines in this area, and sometimes you can find goods in Blairmore unavailable in the city, says Frances Kuryluk.

Having reached the 20th year, the Kuryluks simply hope to see the business continue and prosper.

Fernie Shuttle is back in Blairmore

By Brad Quarin Anyone needing a ride to Calgary has a resource with the Fernie Shuttle, which now picks up and drops off passengers at the Kanata in Blairmore.

The shuttle is run by Practicar Car and Truck Rentals in Fernie and is on the road on Fridays and Saturdays this month.

Practicar owner Lori McArthur says the shuttle is ideal for inter-

national tourists, as it rides to the Calgary airport. Taking a bus to Calgary is easier than taking a jet there and paying for a hotel room.

However, anyone who needs to get to Calgary can use the shuttle.

The Fernie Shuttle ran in Blairmore before, stopping at the BCMI, but after the hotel burned down the stop had to be moved to Coleman for a while.

The shuttle arrives in Blairmore

at noon on Fridays and returns to Blairmore at 7 p.m. On Sundays, the shuttle arrives in Blairmore at 9 a.m. and returns at 4 p.m.

To hitch a ride on the Fernie Shuttle, you have to book ahead of time and can find out rates at www.thefernieshuttle.com.

The shuttle will start up again in December and run until mid April. In December, it will run 10 times a week.

Young girl will sleep safely thanks to GoFundMe campaign

By Brad Quarin This summer, Kylie McMaster learned a new trick. The eight-year-old Pincher Creek girl has a rare and severe form of epilepsy called Lennox Gastaut syndrome, needs a wheelchair, can’t speak, and experiences seizures.

However, in recent weeks she has been able to get up onto her knees. She doesn’t like to be told to do it, and at first wouldn’t give me a demonstration. But mom Holly and aide Samantha Bonwick eventually coaxed her into rolling forth onto her knees, and soon, she was smiling and moving about.

She is also making more vocal noises. Unfortunately, the seizures are starting up again.

“I’m hoping that doesn’t stop all her other progress,” Holly says. “Sometimes seizures can throw you back.”

Kylie actually taught herself how to get up onto her knees. Holly says Kylie simply began getting up and worked on balancing herself. She can now stay up for 10 minutes. She has also learned that she can leap.

This is largely positive, but also created new challenges, particularly regarding sleeping arrangements.

Previously, Kylie slept with Holly, with the bed against the wall and the foot blocked. Holly’s side was unblocked.

Often, Kylie wakes up while Holly is asleep, and if she leaps over Holly, she will hit the floor. She can’t get up and walk away, and might have a seizure, so it’s a safety concern.

There are other reasons why getting Kylie out of Holly’s bed and into her own

bedroom was a good idea. Kylie is becoming heavier as she grows, and lifts are useful to move her. There is a lift in Kylie’s room, but there can’t be one in Holly’s.

A safer arrangement will be achieved by getting a Safety Sleeper bed and mattress.

Holly sought an affordable model and found a Safety Sleeper online for $4,000, plus shipping. She likens it to a tent, which is fully enclosed. Kylie couldn’t roll or jump out of it, and the bars have padding, so she wouldn’t hurt herself if she has a seizure.

It’s still a hefty price tag. “All the medical things are a lot more than your typical bed,” Holly says.

In the past, the McMasters have been overwhelmed by community support.

Angels Within Us secured a wheelchair-accessible Dodge Caravan for the family in 2012.

This time, Holly decided to give the crowdfunding website GoFundMe a try.

A friend from Lundbreck was able to purchase the same bed by appealing for assistance on the site.

So, Holly and Samantha set up the page, with a goal to raise $5,000.

On the first day, the GoFundMe page raised $2,800. Holly knows most of the first few donors.

On the second day, the goal was reached, thanks to a total of 67 donors.

Crab apples – loved, loathed and loaded

By Crowsnest Conservation BearSmart Everyone appreciates the awesome display and sweet fragrance of spring blossoms on crab apple trees around the neighbourhood. But come fall, the work of picking off or picking up ripe apples becomes a lessthan-welcome task.

Unless you are a bear, that is. Crab apple trees are loaded with concentrated calorie packets for a bear fattening up before winter.

Harvesting crab apples on small or medium-sized trees can be assisted using a pole made out of 1½ -inch PVC pipe, with a Y fitting attached to the tip of an eight-foot section. Use the pole to shake the limbs, about halfway from the trunk to the branch end, to help drop the apples without damaging the branches.

Spreading bed sheets under the tree prior to shaking will make cleanup a breeze.

Every year, thousands of pounds of crab apples go unharvested and unused in Crowsnest Pass, often perceived as low value or quality compared to their store-bought relatives, merely because their size prohibits easy peeling and coring. But did you know you can often use crab apples without peeling and coring?

Some great uses of crab apples include: — Extracting the juice by halving, boiling and draining the juice from the pulp through cheesecloth overnight, and then using it to make jelly or concentrate to mix with ginger ale or mull with wine at Christmas.

— Cooking whole crab apples until they are soft, passing them through a food mill to remove the seeds, and sweetening with cinnamon and brown sugar to use for table eating or in baking.

— Canning whole crab apples as spiced crab-apple pickles.

Lundbreck toy run rides to success

By Brad Quarin Despite unco-operative weather, seven motorcycles still rode in the poker run held by the Lundbreck Hotel this month. The toy run collected a good amount of toys and cash for the Women’s Resource and Crisis Centre in Blairmore and some food for Pincher Creek’s Junction food bank.

“We’re quite pleased,” says Lundbreck Hotel owner Wendy Janson.

The toy run is meant to find toys for disadvantaged children for birthdays or Christmas.

This year, donors filled a big box of toys and brought a small bike.

An additional $1,000 was raised for the Women’s Resource Centre, which may go to anti-bullying programs and

violence awareness presentations in schools, and more Christmas toys.

A box was filled with canned goods for the Junction, a good start for the first time collecting non-perishable foods.

A cheque for $100 for the Crowsnest Pass food bank was also donated.

Pincher Pool Schedule Pool closed from Aug. 31 to Sept. 20 for yearly maintenance.
