My Little Corner Summer has zipped by, and it’s hard to believe school is already back in session. Fall is full of firsts and rites of passage for all ages that can be tough for parents.

As if it was yesterday, I remember anxiously dropping off my daughter, Jaiden, for her first day of kindergarten. Those were days of rapid growth and learning, handprint turkeys, sparkles and adventure. It’s hard to believe it was 13 years ago.

As elementary school progressed, opportunities to try new things abounded and I watched Jaiden and her friends develop their special interests. Some leaned to sports, others to technology, music or dance. It was a time of self-discovery with a tinge of self-doubt.

Junior high brought big changes — this is when we moved to Pincher Creek. Peer pressure didn’t start here (I first saw it in kindergarten), but social pressure certainly increased. Academics took on increasing importance for most as they worked through high school.

Suddenly my little girl was a young woman accepting her diploma on graduation day.

I look back on years of first-day-of-school photos, drawings and notes and can’t believe how quickly the years have passed and how much has changed.

We send our children off to kindergarten with brave faces and great anticipation. We spend the

By the time they graduate, our kids are expected to step seamlessly into adulthood.

As a parent, I wonder if I’ve loved enough, taught enough, given enough time, laughed enough and, most importantly, if I’ve been tough enough with my daughter.

Last week I burst into tears while writing a message to her. I was trying to convey my pride while, at the same time, sharing a few pearls of wisdom. For a few hours I was overwhelmed that it was time for my role as mom to change as she embarked on a new life journey.

The next morning we hit the road for Saskatoon, and a few days later I came back alone. It was sad and exciting all at the same time. This week she begins her studies at the University of Saskatchewan and a whole new world will open up for her.

It will be strange not to be present for her first day of school this year, but I guess I can always put in a request for a selfie.

Parenting is both a rewarding and a challenging journey, and is one with no end.

Wherever you are in the journey — child, parent or grandparent — I hope you find much joy in this first week of school and a year filled with excellent adventures.

Kudos to Sally Turner This summer I had the privilege of being at the Pincher Creek public library while the summer reading program was going on. I was very impressed with what I saw.

When Sally Turner read to the young participants, they hung onto her every word. She was enthusiastic and engaged. She spent hours preparing her lessons, which took place both indoors and outdoors.

Sally did an exceptional job of running the reading program, and the children were always engaged and had a lot of fun. They were very lucky to have her!

Canyon School is also welcoming a new Grade 4 teacher, Kaitlyn McCracken, and a new Grade 2 teacher, Michelle Watt.

Matthew Halton High School students are back at it today. New adventures await them in two planned weeks for experiential learning, says principal Sandy McDuffe. The school is also bringing back courses in psychology, sociology and fashion studies.

Through the Pathways to Success program, MHHS will prepare students going into Grade 10 to have a destination plan after graduation. The program will also match student interests with community involvement to build experience.

In Lundbreck, Livingstone School students are returning to find some changes. “It’s going to be an exciting year for us,” says principal Chad Jensen.

The school is welcoming a new Grade 2 and 5 teacher, Ellison Annett. The library is also being rearranged for more open space for activities and a multimedia centre.

Armed with a new school improvement plan, Livingstone School will be fostering more student leadership through the resurrection of the school council and more student involvement in activities. Lessons will be personalized with new multimedia equipment and video editing classes.

In Coleman, Horace Allen School has been enjoying recent growth and has added a third Grade 3 class. Every grade at the school now has three classes, says principal Elaine Garner.

In the last five years, enrolment has increased by 35 to 40 children, and the school predicted it would have 230 students this year.

They also have a new kindergarten teacher, Mrs. Kulak.

Principal Garner says she is looking forward to seeing the children again and finding out what they did this summer.

Students of Isabelle Sellon School can look forward to more diverse choices for experiences and courses, says principal Paul Pichurski. A new Grade 6 teacher, Courtney Cann, has joined the staff.

This fall the school will send its Grade 5 students to camp in Waterton Lakes National Park and will also host Trickster Theatre.

The welcome-back barbecue is at the school playground this Wednesday at 5 p.m.

Crowsnest Consolidated High School has joined the provincial Redesigning High School project after seeing results in other places.

The project calls for student-centred learning with more relaxed rules for when and where learning happens.

The school library is also being transformed according to “an educational shift in how libraries are used,” says principal Wes Wescott.

The library will be part of a new learning commons area, with new equipment, room for small groups and whole classes and 30 computers.

Unlike a traditional library, not all of the new area will be quiet space, as students can record school projects and musical assignments in certain portions.

Hopefully, with these modernizations, redesigns and advantages, this will be a great school year for all.

The mining theme seemed appropriate even though the community hasn’t had a mine for half of its existence. “Beaver Mines originated because of the coal mines,” Mary says.

However, obtaining real coal cars turned out to be a battle. Unable to find any used in Beaver Mines, the association eventually received two from Dale Sands that had been used in the mines at Rosedale, near Drumheller.

They were fairly big, which made it hard to move them. When they arrived, Ken saw the use of the coal cars in the mines had taken its toll.

The boards needed replacing and the metal was bent.

“I didn’t think he would be able to resurrect them,” Mary says. But Wayne McLaurie did it, restoring the coal cars to a beautiful state.

Rancher Steve Oczkowski built the stylized beaver and made metal letters for the monument. “He did a really great job,” Mary says.

For paying for the monument, Shell Canada got the ball rolling with a $2,500 grant. The community association also opened its own coffers.

nity association couldn’t get property there. So, they selected another spot that belonged to the Municipal District of Pincher Creek, and persuaded the MD council that the statue would be “spectacular.”

The MD not only agreed to host the monument, but levelled the land and brought in gravel for it.

Others who made the monument possible include committee members, labourers, Grumpy’s Landscaping, Barb McRae (donation of rails), Alberta Rocks, and Teck Resources.

The coffee group at Beaver Mines Store often co-ordinated the volunteer efforts at the monument, Ken says.

It’s hoped the volunteers who made the monument possible will attend the dedication on Sunday. There will be short speeches and greetings from the MD, followed by coffee and tea at the Beaver Mines gazebo.

The fruits of their labour have been very worthwhile. “I’m just impressed,” says Ken, who believes the monument turned out better than they had originally imagined.

“It shows what you can do with a group of volunteers who give their time and energy,” Mary says.

Twin Butte area prepares for MD byelection Voters in the Municipal District of Pincher Creek can warm up for the upcoming federal election by casting a ballot in a byelection for the local council.

The byelection will be held in Division 1, which consists of Twin Butte and a large surrounding area.

The vote became necessary after MD councillor Grant McNab stepped down.

Grant had a stroke in December 2013, and the community showed grand support to him while he was in the hospital. Angels Within Us found someone to manage the chores on his ranch during calving season.

Any Canadian citizen over 18 who lives in the division and has lived in Alberta for six months can vote. In the last election in 2013, 160 ballots were cast in the division.

Voting takes place at Twin Butte Community Hall on Sept. 14, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. An advance poll will be held at the MD office in Pincher Creek next Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.

There are two candidates to choose from, with ranchers Tony Bruder and Quentin Stevick throwing their hats into the ring.

Both candidates took the time to tell us a bit about who they are and why they are running.

Tony Bruder

I grew up on the family ranch at the confluence of Yarrow and Drywood creeks, and was taught from a young age that being an active member of the community is very important. I attended St. Michael’s School, then went on to Olds College for agricultural production.

My whole life I knew I wanted to ranch, and felt blessed when my wife, Lorraine, and I were given the chance to purchase the ranch from Mom and Dad (Joe and Vernie Bruder) in 1993. Together with our two children, Nathan and Tannis, we operate a cow-calf operation.

I believe very strongly in giving back to our community and have spent many volunteer hours coaching junior and senior high school volleyball at both St. Michael’s and Matthew Halton. I was a leader of the Foothills 4-H Beef Club for several years. I have been a director on the Twin Butte Community Hall board and the Pincher Creek and District Agricultural Society.

I currently chair the Drywood Yarrow Conservation Partnership, the watershed group along the Drywood and Yarrow creeks. I work with the Waterton Biosphere

I have also been on the MD of Pincher Creek’s ag service board for the past several years, and have been able to catch a glimpse of the way things happen within the MD council and administration. With some effort, I feel that I can make the step up to councillor.

As a member of the community, just like you, I have seen some major changes take place within the MD of Pincher Creek in the last six or seven years. Many have expressed concern to me over some MD council and administration decisions.

Like those I have talked with throughout the community, I have seen a real road maintenance problem within the whole MD. I travel across southern Alberta’s gravel roads a lot while delivering bulls to our buyers, and I compare the maintenance of roads within our MD to those of other MDs and counties. I feel that if we do not start a better maintenance program soon, we will have a road reconstruction program to deal with instead, at a much higher cost.

I feel very strongly that we have to hold industry and utility companies to a higher standard when doing work within our MD. Just like landowners, those companies crossing the lands within our MD have to be held responsible for the footprint they leave behind. The MD council has to get the proper policies in place to deal with these issues, and they also need to apply pressure on higher governance to make it easier to deal with these issues on a provincial level.

I was brought up in a community. I see this ideal fading away. I believe this change comes, in part, from the way some feel we must confer with lawyers before doing or even saying anything, instead of doing what we know is right. Right for the people within our MD, and right for the land we live on.

All ideas are worth looking at. If we receive all the information, not just the bias, we can make good decisions for the betterment of the whole MD. My home phone number is 403-627-5425. I am open to discussion, and will work hard to represent all the ratepayers within Division 1.

My wife, Anne, and I are the owners and operators of Bar 15 Simmentals on the Township Line Road.

A few years ago we sold our purebred cattle after years of successful bull sales. We supplied quality breeding stock to our customers, many of whom are currently raising livestock in this MD. We now run a custom grazing program on our ranch, which I manage on a daily basis. Our entire working lives have been spent in production agriculture and everything we have is because of cattle.

After retiring from active purebred ranching, I have taken the opportunity to travel and to work in various countries. Most recently, I lived and worked in Russia and Kazakhstan as a livestock specialist. I was boots on the ground, doing everything that was needed, from assisting calves at birth to designing and overseeing

infrastructure for beef cattle. I taught artificial insemination and safety practices. Many of the people I worked with had never seen a Canadian before. They had no previous experience with beef cattle.

I funded an outdoor hockey rink in the village of Golovino, Russia. There is a mural painted on the wall with a Russian flag, a Canadian flag and the Russian word for friendship between the two flags.

Locally, I have worked in customer relations for the Pincher Creek Co-op in conjunction with delivering fuel.

I started volunteering at an early age and have been a 4-H leader for three different clubs. I coached the 1980 Alberta provincial beef-judging championship team. My associate degree in agriculture is from North Dakota State University.

When BSE hit the beef industry, we were financially devastated. Our bull market dried up. To get that market moving, I devised a plan to have our customers donate their used bulls to local food banks. They received a charitable-donation receipt and a $1,000 credit at our sale toward the purchase of a new bull. The bulls were slaughtered at Pincher Creek Meats and the hamburger was distributed to food banks from Calgary south to all borders in southern Alberta.

I continued to work with the Lethbridge Food Bank for several years and this contact lead to other volunteer opportunities with Operation Red Nose and Habitat for Humanity. Locally, I am a founding member of the Pincher Creek Watershed Group and have chaired the annual Blue Weed Blitz.

Politically, I have been involved behind the scenes in several provincial elections. This is the first time I have put my name on a ballot.

Anne and I chose to live and work in this MD many years ago because of the beautiful scenery, agricultural lifestyle and friendly people. I still remember walking into Jackson Hardware and being greeted by two smiling, happy and helpful ladies. They still live here. When the Alberta government took our first ranch for the Oldman Dam, we chose, for the second time, to live and work in the MD of Pincher Creek.

We just came through a community-backed fight against AltaLink and their high-voltage transmission lines. Many of our friends and fellow MD residents are still fighting. I have concerns with the deterioration of our rural roads. I also believe in fiscal responsibility and will be vigilant on how tax money is spent.

I will work to maintain what we already have in this corner of heaven and to enhance the draw to this area by pushing forward on high-quality, high-speed Internet to allow people to earn a living from their homes.

Many issues that face Division 1 do not stop at a line on the map. They affect many of the residents of our MD, our town, villages and by extension the rest of the province. We do not live in a vacuum. Because of my life experiences, I live by the axiom “Think globally, act locally.”

Old photograph of Burmis tree is a thrift-store treasure

By Brad Quarin While visiting Value Village in Calgary, Blairmore native Ryan Rumsey was searching for the kinds of treasures sometimes found in thrift stores when he caught a glimpse of something that demanded a closer look. It was a large photograph of a tree.

“That tree looks really familiar,” he thought.

He was shocked to realize it was the Burmis tree, with needles, meaning the photo was taken back when it was still alive.

Ryan was born in 1978, the year the tree died, so he had never seen it with needles. He never would have expected to find a picture of the Burmis tree in a Calgary thrift shop, let alone one of this size. He picked it up for only $10.

The tree is the most iconic sight in Burmis, familiar to everyone travelling Highway 3 between Pincher Creek and Crowsnest Pass.

According to www.crowsnestheritage.ca, the limber pine was at least 300 and possibly 700 years old when it died. It is considered a piece of Burmis and Crowsnest Pass heritage.

Ryan lived in Pincher Creek until 1983 and visited Crowsnest Pass for every summer vacation. He felt connected to the tree, which is still standing.

The photo must have been taken before 1978, but by whom is a mystery. The initials B.V. were found on the cardboard backing of the frame, but whether those are the initials of the photographer is unknown.

At 16 by 19 inches, the photo appears to have been taken in colour, but has faded over time.

Ryan showed the photo to his grandparents, Jack and Shirley Rumsey, who were “floored” by the discovery and couldn’t remember the last time they had seen the tree with needles.

After spending a couple of years on Ryan’s wall, the photo will now go to Jack and Shirley as a goingaway gift. Ryan is moving to Buffalo, N.Y. Someone reading this may recognize the picture and know who took it, or have other interesting historic photos of the Burmis tree. Longtime Blairmore accountant retires

By Brad Quarin After 40 years as a chartered accountant in Blairmore, Alan Martini is retiring.

“I’ve liked my job all these years, and I’m going to miss it,” Alan says. “I’m going to miss all my customers and clients.”

Alan has sold his practice to Robin & Co. Chartered Professional Accountant. Owner Dennis Robin has an office in Pincher Creek and has had a satellite office in Crowsnest Pass since 2007.

Alan recalls stepping into the accounting field 50 years ago. He was in high school when he saw an advertisement for a job with chartered accountant Alex Wells.

After working with Alex for 10 years and studying for a bachelor’s degree in commerce at the University of Calgary, Alan bought Alex’s practice.

Thinking back on the years in Crowsnest Pass, he recalls what the experience was like — “Work, work, work, and a little bit.”

One memory that particularly stands out is moving from Main Street Blairmore into a new building on 127th Street. That was 18 years ago, and he spent the rest of his career there.

“That was nice, because then you’re working for yourself,” he says. He liked the space in his building.

Accounting tech Louise Dalziel is also retiring. “I’ve worked a long time and I just want to be me for a bit,” she says. There will be more focus on her family.

She worked for Alan for 31 years, staying on because of “a good boss.” She enjoyed her work, which consisted of preparing tax returns and making sure customers were satisfied.

Dennis says the move into Alan’s former office provides an opportunity to better serve both existing and new clients in Crowsnest Pass. His new office in Blairmore will be open five days a week.

Princesses crowned at Piikani Nation celebration

By Brad Quarin Three girls were crowned Piikani Nation princesses this summer, following a pageant at the community’s annual celebration.

Kylee North Peigan was named Little Miss Piikani, Gracelynn Bad Eagle became Miss Junior Piikani and Hayley Grier-Stewart is the new Miss Piikani Nation Senior.

“Our role in the community is to be good role models for the other youth … and also to represent our culture and keep our culture going,” Hayley says. “A lot of times, younger people choose not to participate in [Piikani culture].... With us going around and showing them that we could make our culture strong, it will help them to also come out.”

Kylee entered the pageant with some experience under her belt. Last year, she was crowned junior princess at Napi’s Playground Elementary School, and had already been in a few pageants before then.

With one other girl trying out for the title, Kylee proved to be a capable dancer in the pageant and played keyboard for her talent. At last year’s pageant at NPES, her talent had been skipping rope.

Gracelynn, 10, tried out for Miss Junior Piikani, inspired by her cousin Teairra Bad Eagle, who held the title last year. There were six girls competing for the crown.

Gracelynn’s mother, Winona, says her daughter is shy and that the family hoped the pageant would build her confidence.

At the pageant, Gracelynn gave a speech in English and Blackfoot, talking of her achievements in math, science and art in school and her goals to pursue these studies.

For her talent, she sang a powwow song, having learned from her uncle Blaze a couple of years ago.

She says she was excited when she was crowned at the annual celebration powwow. “It was really emotional for her, too, and our family,” Winona says.

Meanwhile, Hayley climbed the ladder to Miss Piikani Nation Senior this year, having served as Miss Junior Piikani from 2010 to 2011. She had to build her confidence to become Miss Junior Piikani, and worked hard to speak clearly and loudly.

That experience encouraged Hayley to try out for princess again. “It felt good to be a role model for the community,” she says.

As well, going into her last year at F.P. Walshe High School in Fort Macleod, she believed this was her last chance to be a princess again. The age range for Miss Piikani Nation Senior is 13 to 17.

This year, four girls originally tried for the crown, though two later withdrew.

In her speech, Hayley told the audience about her many talents and accomplishments. She had won awards in dancing, and can perform jazz, ballet and hip hop.

She was also a member of the Pincher Creek Dolphins swim club for eight years and joined a drumming and dancing group in Fort Macleod in Grade 4.

Hayley excels in volleyball, basketball and rugby. With her rugby team, she placed second in the provincials this year. She and her sister Carleigh attended the Michael Jordan Basketball Camp last summer, where they were coached by professionals who worked with the former NBA star.

Hayley also spoke on her experience with the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, which has started to settle the pain over Indian residential schools.

In 2014 she was selected to represent the youth of Treaty 7 territory and give a presentation for the commission.

Although Hayley is too young to have personal experience with residential schools, most of the

elders on the reserve were affected. She was able to speak on how to heal.

For the talent portion of the pageant, she displayed her artwork, mainly portraits she drew in a realistic style.

Along with the other princesses, Hayley was crowned days after the pageant, at the powwow.

“It felt really amazing,” she says. “Everybody was there, everybody recognized me, and once I got the title everybody came up and said ‘I’m so glad you’re princess.’ ” Even people from other reserves were thrilled with the news.

The community can have faith its three fine princesses will exercise their duties well.

Christopher Clymer 1953 - 2015

Christopher Stuart Clymer was born to Bill and Imogen Clymer on Oct. 1, 1953, in Kimberley, South Africa.

He immigrated to Canada in 1979, living in Edmonton for some years before moving with his family to Sudbury, Ont., in 1991.

Christopher returned in 2009 to Pincher Creek, where he was last employed by the Pincher Creek Co-op.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Chris was truly blessed and was the beloved father of Elizabeth, Megan, Jenna and Andrew; grandfather of Hannah; and brother of Anne Connellan (Tony) and Charles Clymer (Helen) of Pincher Creek. Chris also leaves to cherish his memory many cousins, nephews and nieces.

After fighting a brave and short battle with cancer, Chris passed away peacefully in hospital, with all his family at his bedside, on Aug. 11, 2015.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Windy Slopes Health Foundation in Pincher Creek.

Nora Todd Stephens Tonat Born Oct. 28, 1922

Nora Tonat, 92, of Pincher Creek passed away peacefully on Aug. 24, 2015.

She is survived by her sons Anthony Clive (Evelina) and Richard Andrew (Sandy) Stephens; her daughter, Vivienne Patricia (Fred) Stephens Criddle Dayley; 14 grandchildren; 39 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by husbands John Clive Stephens and Henry Tonat, son Edward Knighton Stephens, one grandchild and one great-grandchild.

Born and raised in England, she nursed in London during the Second World War and married John. Her children were born in Wales, Malta, England and Jamaica. After moving to Canada in 1959, Nora married Henry and lived many years in Huntsville, Ont., and finally moved to Pincher Creek in 2003.

Nora’s life was full of giving — not just to her family but also to countless organizations, including Big Sisters, Canadian Cancer Society and animal shelters. If she wasn’t singing or playing tennis, you could find her in the garden in her swimsuit. She beat cancer twice; she was as tough as her burnt pot roasts.

Nothing could stop her determination or her kindness. She moved at the speed of light and got things done. She started the Huntsville Racqueteers, danced and travelled, held wonderful parties, knitted and crocheted, and wrote snippy letters to the newspaper editor.

This feisty, wonderful, outgoing poet was full of vim and “vinegar” and will be missed by friends and family scattered all around the globe.

Relatives and friends attended her memorial service on Aug. 28, 2015, at Vista Village in Pincher Creek.

Funding bolsters community improvements

By Brad Quarin The 150th anniversary of Confederation is just around the corner, and numerous local groups and communities are already receiving early presents.

This summer, significant funding was announced for Crowsnest Pass, Pincher Creek, Waterton and area through the Canada 150 Community Infrastructure and Building Canada programs.

MP John Barlow made the announcement regarding several local projects while visiting Crowsnest Museum at the end of July.

“Facilities such as this, as heritage buildings, pathways, community centres, Legions — you’re the foundation of these communities. You bring families and residents together,” Mr. Barlow said.

Despite a number of announcements and large cheques, community projects in our area keep on coming. “I’m surprised you’re still going to ask for more stuff later,” he joked.

Among the beneficiaries is Crowsnest Museum itself, which is receiving $103,000 to restore the Coleman Alberta Provincial Police building and open it to the public.

Another $58,922 is going to the United Riders of Crowsnest for new trails and $10,000 worth of funding will be provided for upgrading Cowley Community Hall.

Pincher Creek can expect $1.8 million for its water treatment plant and $1 million for the water treatment lagoon. An additional $3 million will go to upgrade the water system to Beaver Mines.

Waterton Lakes National Park is a big winner in the funding announcements, as Parks Canada is receiving $107 million for rehabilitation work and a new visitor reception centre.

The Coleman Alberta Provincial Police building is only two doors away from the museum, next to the Coleman Seniors Centre. It has been deserted for years and has degraded.

Still, the building has a story worth telling. “This is the place where history happens,” says Chris Matthews, executive director of the museum.

The story of the Alberta Provincial Police is scarcely remembered, and the museum saw an opportunity to recollect it, he says. The APP formed in 1917 and its history is highlighted by Prohibition and the shooting of Cpl. Stephen Lawson in 1922.

Crowsnest Museum took over the former police building a few years ago, with a vision to open it to the public on Canada Day 2017. It will feature exhibits on Prohibition, the provincial police and the Cpl. Lawson trial.

Work to achieve this will take three phases, with the first being the restoration of the exterior, the second being renovation of the interior, and the third being exhibit preparation.

The first phase is already paid for. The funding from the Canada 150 Community Infrastructure Program will support the second phase.

The inside of the building has been changed over the years, as it became a residence with windows and stoves added, Chris says. The museum wants

“He wants to see how capable you are without lots of direction,” Dennis says. “He wants to see you basically test yourself while he’s testing you.”

Dennis says he was “absolutely ecstatic” to get his fifth degree, seeing it as proof that hard work and enduring injuries pay off. It was an important day in his life.

He hopes to one day get up to the ninth degree, God willing.

If this has sparked your curiosity, note that taekwondo lessons are coming back to Monster Fitness in Pincher Creek on Sept. 15.

Sokownin’s Taekwondo has classes on Tuesday and Thursday nights, for beginner, intermediate and senior learners.

Registration will be taken on Saturday from 6 to 9 p.m. at Monster Fitness.

Dennis recommends the classes for anybody, regardless of age, mental or physical disability or inexperience with sports.

“I think everybody … in their life should try martial arts at least once, and excel at something,” Dennis says. “It builds your confidence. It makes you not so afraid, standing up for yourself, not to fight, but to actually physically [and] mentally challenge yourself to stand up to whatever comes at you.”

Back-to-school nutrition tips

By Valerie Fraser As summer winds down and kids head back to school, chances are you’re wondering how to fill lunch boxes with nutritious food that your kids will actually want to eat.

Here are a few tips to help you prepare healthy, yummy lunches for your children: — Take your kids grocery shopping and let them pick a veggie or fruit of the week — preferably something they haven’t tried before.

— Shred zucchini, carrots, kale, spinach and more to sneak vegetables into muffins, pasta sauces and even smoothies.

— Pass on sugary granola bars. Make a healthy and satisfying snack by combining fruits or vegetables with a source of protein, such as carrot sticks with hummus or mixed berries and almonds.

— Limit high-sodium meats, including deli meats (especially bologna), pepperoni and ham, sausage and hotdogs. Substitute cold cuts in sandwiches or wraps with vegetables and chicken.

Eating a healthy diet — lots of vegetables and fruit, lots of fibre and little fat and sugar — will help you keep a healthy body weight, which reduces your risk of developing cancer.

Moon will light the way for new fun run

By Brad Quarin When hosting the Southern Alberta Summer Games in 2014, the Pincher Creek recreation advisory committee heard great feedback from the runners.

“It’s such a beautiful run,” many said, according to John Verhagen, the chairman of the committee.

Crowsnest Pass and Lethbridge have their own annual runs, and the committee imagined they could take advantage of the wondrous setting of Pincher Creek to start one here.

A Pincher Creek fun run would give the community another big summer event like the Summer Games, and it would promote “active living,” John says.

To give it a unique flavour, members of the committee imagined having the run at night, something children often like.

So, they are timing the 10-kilometre run with the moonrise on Sept. 26.

“The runners will be running in the moonlight of the full moon,” he says.

The Moonshadow Run will also have 2.5- and five-kilometre routes to run or walk on. Participants will be running along the creek.

It’s not so much a race as a fun run. It’s meant for anyone, including novices and beginners, from “three to 93,” John says. However, dogs will have to stay home, as the trail is too narrow for them.

The walk and run will be followed by a post-race festival at the Pincher Creek pool, with swimming, music and coffee.

If you’re interested in trying out the inaugural Moonshadow Run, registering before Sept. 8 will get you a T-shirt.

Registration at www.moonshadowrun.ca costs $10 for the 2.5-kilometre trail, $20 for the five-kilometre trail and $30 for the 10-kilometre run.

If you’re just excited to help get the run off the ground, you can help as a volunteer. People will be needed for water stations, giving directions, first aid and recording times, John says. Volunteers can call the recreation office at 403-627-4322 or the Verhagens at 403-627-2875.

By Kerri Robins Folks in Crowsnest Pass got some exercise, fresh air and a little sport this summer — by hitting the links and teeing up to support their community health.

The Crowsnest Pass Health Foundation hosted its 18th annual golf tournament on June 26.

Eighty-six golfers stepped up to the tee box at the Crowsnest Pass Golf and Country Club to raise more than $8,600, with proceeds going toward the purchase of a $23,000 LifePak 15 monitor-defibrillator for the Crowsnest Pass Health Centre.

Elizabeth Cook, a registered nurse at the health centre, says the LifePak 15 is essential diagnostic equipment.

“The LifePak 15 tracks and monitors patient blood pressure, blood oxygen levels and pulse, and shows a picture or graph of heart rhythms,” she says. “And its portability and built-in defibrillator allows patient treatment during transport, and will help improve patient flow.”

Recently renamed the Kathy Allsop Memorial Golf Tournament, the event honours the memory of registered nurse, foundation board member and avid golfer Kathy Allsop. The tournament has raised more than $300,000 over its 18-year history.

Becky Rinaldi, who chairs the Crowsnest Pass Health Foundation, has helped organize the tourney for the past five years.

“I look forward to the event each year and I’m always impressed at the community support and generosity, from donations to prizes and sponsorships,” she says. “It’s always a great day and we all have a lot of fun.”

Now that’s a hole in one for health care.
