Last Friday’s announcement of proposed amendments to the South Saskatchewan Regional Plan had many jumping for joy while others have concerns about the impact of the changes.

Brad Quarin’s article on page 3 captures the spirit of jubilation that surrounded the announcement, while acknowledging that not everyone is thrilled.

Use and protection of the Castle Special Management Area is a long-standing debate with many facets. There were certainly too many angles to adequately cover in the time between the announcement and our press deadline on a holiday weekend.

A post of Brad’s initial story to social media prompted a variety of responses. Many were supportive of the proposed changes, while others posed serious questions and arguments.

I think most will agree that the Oldman Watershed needs protection. Water has become a precious commodity and demand will only continue to grow.

The topic of commercial logging prompts controversy, as does discussion of mining and gas development.

Hunters wonder how the changes will impact them as do ranchers with grazing leases.

I’ve seen both abuse of and care for the land and the water in the backcountry. It’s undeniable that many feel a strong connection to this area of the province.

Unfortunately, some see it as a free playground and feel it’s their right to leave it trashed in their wake.

Some blame the mess in the backcountry entirely on

An editorial by Shannon Robin weekenders from the city. I don’t mean just the garbage, but the land and water damage. However, I think it comes from all around us. There will always be people who abide by rules and others who deliberately or thoughtlessly break them.

It’s not just in the far reaches that we see problems.

Look at the trash people toss into the Pincher Creek and the garbage hiding in the rocks of Frank Slide. This is an indication of a lack of respect in general.

As more people visit the backcountry the problems and need for protection are amplified.

There are no easy answers when it comes to determining a long-term plan for an area as important as the Castle. I see both value and challenges for many in this new proposal. With a scope this large, there will be no such thing as making everyone happy.

Regardless of which side of the fence you perch on, I encourage you to read up on the issue. Details of the proposal are found online at www.albertaparks.ca/ media/6369189/castle-publication_20150902.pdf.

Consider what this land means to you and to future generations, and make your opinion known through the government survey that is found online at http://www.albertaparks.ca/albertaparksca/about-us/ public-consultations/archives/enhancing-the-protection-of-the-castle-area.aspx under the Public Comment heading.

An email address and mailing information are also provided if you wish to share your comments during a consultation period, which is open until Oct. 5.

Questions have been raised by some ranchers holding grazing leases. What will happen when lease renewals come due? Information released affirms that existing grazing will be allowed in both the provincial and wildland parks, but new grazing will be subject to a suitability assessment.

Local MLA Pat Stier considers the ban an erosion of property rights and the rights of business owners. He also questions whether preventing new natural resource industries in the Castle would be good for the economy.

Supporters believe the decision will help the economy in other ways.

“The two new parks in southwest Alberta will provide a foundation for growing a local economy around tourism and recreation,” Ms. Phillips said.

Among the business owners who may benefit is Jessica Atkinson, whose Stone’s Throw Cafe hosted the announcement. Beaver Mines Lake is a favourite place for Atkinson family outings.

“It’s pretty amazing to get to live here,” Jessica said.

“Today’s announcement means that places like that will be pristine and and protected.”

Crestview volunteers and staff always ready to help

Wendy then bolted the newly made-over cow down.

“It’s a huge relief and an accomplishment,” she says. “Cowley was a big hit at the tea party, and the whole community has been really complimentary.”

From Cowley’s new home, she is able to look across town at another ornamental cow, who resides at the King Edward Hotel.

“I don’t know the second cow’s name,” says Wendy, “but she is painted blue so I’ve nicknamed her Bluebell. I think she and Cowley are already fast friends.”

Wendy credits Cowley’s return to a team effort, and is thankful to everyone who supported her pet project. “Communities in Bloom isn’t just about external beauty, it’s about getting people involved and feeling some town spirit, and I feel like that

certainly happened in this case.”

Communities in Bloom board members in Pincher Creek are now anxiously awaiting the results of the competition, which won’t be announced until October. In the meantime, Cowley is enjoying her new home and there are even plans in the works to have her repainted.

“I think it’s important to stay true to her roots,” Wendy says. “So, on one side, the original artwork that is so unique to this area will be repainted, and the plan is to do the other side in roses, because of the Rose Society tea.”

Once the paint job is complete, the cow will be rechristened as Cowley-Rose.

Wendy hopes those who catch a glimpse of the cow, perched atop the balcony at Lebel Mansion, are inspired

by Cowley’s journey.

“We can’t let vandalism win. We can’t let it hold us back,” she says. “We need to be positive, and move forward and rise above.”

I think Cowley would agree.

Things look good in run-up to Relay for Life

By Brad Quarin Several teams have already signed up for Pincher Creek’s Relay for Life, and there is room for more.

“We would love to have more teams,” says B.J. Scott, a committee member for Relay for Life. The event can take as many teams as sign up.

Relay for Life on Sept. 19 will see teams take turns in a walk around the agricultural grounds for the Canadian Cancer Society. Teams secure pledges and raise money for cancer research.

“Everybody’s life, in some way, has been touched by cancer,” B.J. says. She had cancer and benefited from a treatment that had been available for only six months. Other members of the local committee have also had cancer treatments that resulted from recent research.

The Canadian Cancer Society is an ideal vehicle to fight cancer with, as its administrative expenses are low, she says.

Many of the teams that have signed up so far represent businesses, families, friends and the fire department.

Shootin’ the Breeze is one business that has entered a team, the Bold and the Breezy. We are accepting monetary donations at our office and are running a garage sale there from Sept. 15 to 19 as part of our fundraising effort.

Another team, Krusty’s Kids, is made up of family and friends of Doug Evans, a Beaver Mines resident who died of cancer.

Local firefighters are forming a team and will be making the walk in full gear.

B.J.’s team is called Get ’er Done, and is made up of a group of friends and some other members of the Relay for Life committee.

She is excited with the additions this year. Partnering with Pincher Creek’s Ovarian Cancer Canada Walk of Hope is significant, and there will be a run on a five-kilometre loop available to participants.

There is also some new entertainment, with the Big Little Band joining the musical performers. There will be yoga and a belly dancing workshop at the relay as well. B.J. says these have been added so that there is something for everyone.

’Tis the season for learning

By Erin Fairhurst Fall is in the air and as the kids go back to school, adults may have a sense of yearning for their own school days — the smell of crisp paper, the satisfaction that comes with learning and making new friends through common interests.

But just because our school days are behind us, that doesn’t mean the opportunities for learning have to be too. In fact, in both Crowsnest Pass and Pincher Creek, opportunities abound for adults who are looking to broaden their creativity, build their artistic skills or just plain get out of the house during these dark days of fall.

Crowsnest Pass Public Art Gallery, through the Allied Arts Association, is hosting a variety of adult workshops.

Sept. 12 and 13, the workshop Sketch the Pass With Angelique takes place at the gallery. Participants are invited to try their hand at creating a keepsake of the Pass through colour, sketches and journaling.

The cost of the 10-hour workshop is $70 per person.

In October, a second workshop will be hosted by the Allied Arts Association at the Artist Collective Studio on Main Street Blairmore. Drawing From Nature takes place Oct. 10 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. for a fee of $50. Local artist Nichole Yanota will guide participants through the myriad of ways in which nature and art merge — in terms of both the physical elements and the emotional aspects. All levels are welcome to attend.

If the fall air is inspiring you to try your hand at homesteading, you might want to roll up your sleeves and learn how to make your own soap on Oct. 29. In this workshop, instructor Wendy Davies will teach participants how to make their own earth-friendly and completely natural goat’s milk soap. The cost of the threehour workshop is $60 per person, and includes all supplies.

And if you’re looking for the ultimate hands-on experience, the Pass Pottery Club has just the thing for you. An eight-session wheel-throwing course will be held Mondays and Thursdays, 7 to 10 p.m., beginning the week of Oct. 5 and running until Oct. 29. The fee for all eight sessions is $80 per person and includes glazing and firing, but not the clay.

A second pottery workshop is also being offered through the club — a hand-building course that guides partici-

pants through the process of making their very own lasagna casserole dish. Perfect for that hard-to-shop-for person on your Christmas list! The workshop takes place over two evening sessions, Nov. 4 and Dec. 2. The cost is $45 per person, and includes all materials and firings.

The Crowsnest Sports Complex in Coleman is the location for both pottery workshops.

The Artist Collective Studio on Main Street Blairmore also has a busy fall planned. The studio is hosting a fall figure-drawing series on the last Tuesday of every month from 7 to 9 p.m.

The Pincher Creek Allied Arts Council is also hosting a variety of fall programs.

Want to learn how to knit yourself a cozy fall sweater — or maybe a scarf?

An introductory knitting workshop takes place the last three Tuesdays of September from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Lebel Mansion, for a cost of $45.

Beginning in October, a variety of art workshops will be available, such as Adventures in Colour and Acrylic Inks.

This two-day course, described as “watercolours on steroids,” takes place Oct. 4 and 5 for a fee of $225.

And for animal lovers, a wildlife pastel workshop is offered Oct. 8 and 10. The workshop will use pastels to create lifelike portraits of favourite animals, or even a pet, and the cost is $60 per session.

Oct. 6, from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m., Arva Traynor will instruct a Zentangle workshop. Zentangle is a method that creates images through the use of structured patterns. It’s said to focus the mind, inspire creativity and soothe the soul, all at once!

Soapmaking, photography and an introduction to crochet will also be available in November and December — stay tuned for more details!

By Brad Quarin This year’s Pincher Creek Trade Show will feature a number of new vendors offering saunas, hot tubs, clothing and jewelry, says Lieve Parisis, administrator with the Pincher Creek and District Chamber of Commerce.

The show takes place Friday and Saturday at the arena on Main Street. There will be at least 70 booths, representing businesses and groups in Pincher Creek, Crowsnest Pass, Lundbreck, Lethbridge, Fort Macleod and beyond.

The concession will be managed by Children’s World Daycare, which will raise money from the event.

Daycare director Marie Meckelborg says the money will go toward starting up a greenspace and playground near St. Michael’s School. This is a project shared with the kindergarten and preschool coinciding with renovations at the school.

Sun shines on opening of Crowsnest Companion

By Brad Quarin A little rain earlier in the day didn’t stop Crowsnest Companion’s grand opening, which took the form of a barbecue last Thursday at Flumerfelt Park.

The new business aims to support independent living with cooking, gardening, housekeeping, shopping, chauffeuring and providing a little company to seniors.

The bad weather mysteriously cleared up for the event, leading owner Terri Lorrain to a conclusion.

“I think God loves Crowsnest Companion,” she says, chuckling.

The response she received, including the turnout at the barbecue, was what she had hoped for.

Much of it was made possible by Crowsnest Pass residents Bill and Chelsea Sanford, who Terri says called her “out of the blue” and offered their assistance. The Sanfords volunteered setting up at Flumerfelt Park.

“I really think she’s doing a great thing,” Chelsea says. “The Pass definitely needs a facility like this.”

The barbecue was also made possible by SuperValu in Blairmore, which donated all of the food out of appreciation for the idea of Crowsnest Companion.

A number of seniors attended, and each received a free fridge magnet and a coupon for an hour of free service from Crowsnest Companion.

Terri gratefully thanks all of those who helped the barbecue become a success.

Robert Emanuel Chapman

Robert (Bob) Emanuel Chapman, age 85, passed away on Sept. 1, 2015, in Pincher Creek.

Bob was born in Mena, Ark., on Oct. 13, 1929. He worked his way through many occupations in the United States, such as picking fruit in California, logging in Montana, picking cotton in Arkansas, working in a jewelry factory and restaurant in Providence, R.I., and managing a Co-op farm supply in Joplin and Fort Benton, Mont. He then came to Canada with family in 1966 to farm and ranch at Consul, Sask.

Bob was a member of the Saskatchewan Masonic Lodge, where he eventually became grand master of the Grand Lodge of Saskatchewan, and a member of the Saskatchewan Shriners and Eastern Star. He was also heavily involved in the Robsart 4-H Club as a “welding” leader and supportive slave to his kids and other 4-H members.

Some of his passions were hunting and fishing with his family and friends, and he also loved to share his knowledge of hunting, fishing and outdoor survival skills with many children as a Boy Scout leader. He was a generous and sharing person; he would give anyone the shirt off his back if they needed it.

Bob married Lorriene Miller of Scobey, Mont., on Aug. 7, 1950. Together they had three children: a son and two daughters, then resulting in seven grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Bob is survived by Lorriene Chapman of Pincher Creek; his children Patty (Ronley) Wilson of Abbortsford, B.C., and Della (Piet) Oosterlee of Pincher Creek; his daughter-in-law, Louanne Morris of Maple Creek, Sask.; five grandchildren: Barry (Melissa), Delea (Tony), Jody (Jason), Todd (Michelle), Leecole (Troy); and his great-grandchildren: Emily, Nia, Willow, Austin, Joshua, Elizabeth, James, Isaac, Simon, Daniel, Hanna and Hayden.

Bob was predeceased by his son, Richard Chapman; his grandsons Scott and Logan; his parents, Claud and Mattie Chapman; his brothers: Jim, Lee and Roy; and his sisters: Violet, Lucille and Ruby.

Bob’s family would like to extend our heartfelt thank you to all the angels of Vista Village for their love and care showered on him during his years at Vista Village.

By Crowsnest Conservation BearSmart From cute and cuddly to ferocious and fuel for legends (think Yogi and Smokey versus the bear in the movie The Edge), people have an almost schizophrenic relationship with bears and an often irrational fear of bear attacks.

Encounters where bears avoid people likely number in the thousands annually, yet media attention focuses on a few rare attacks.

Research by Stephen Herrero, a longtime expert in bear behaviour and the author of numerous reports on bear attacks, and his colleagues can shed interesting perspective on our fears and the actual facts.

In reality, the risk of a serious or fatal bear attack is very low. The total number of bear-inflicted injuries and fatalities has increased in Alberta each decade since the 1960s but, given the parallel increase in the total population, the actual rate of injury remains around 0.5 persons per million people per year.

The rate of injury and fatality caused by lightning in Canada each year is 3.5 to 5 persons per million people, or in other words you are seven to 10 times more likely to be struck and injured by lightning than injured by a bear.

Herrero’s work clarified several factors surrounding bear attacks that can help us understand and reduce our risk. Serious bear-inflicted injuries peaked in August (for black bears) and September (for grizzly bears) as high human activity on the land overlapped with key bear habitats during a time of bear movement and intense foraging in preparation for hibernation.

Most attacks involved small parties of one to three people. Hiking, walking and camping seemingly exposed people on foot to encounters with bears, and hunters represented 50 per cent of grizzly-bear-inflicted injuries on provincial lands in Alberta.

Grizzly bears, though occurring at lower density on the landscape, inflicted twice as many serious and fatal injuries as black bears. Fatal attacks by grizzly bears were characterized by close-range, sudden encounters — typically bears defending cubs or animal carcasses. Conversely, fatalities by black bears were primarily predatory attacks, with 92 per cent of these attacks committed by male black bears.

Female grizzly bears with cubs were the most dangerous age and sex class for this species, while female black bears with cubs seldom attacked people and even more rarely killed (only five per cent of black bear attack deaths from 1900 to 2013 involved female bears with young). In the instances where a female black bear with cubs did attack, over 90 per cent of the cases involved a dog, suggesting these defensive attacks may have been triggered by the presence of the dog.

Caution is always recommended, as each bear encounter is unique and the individual bear’s history is unknown. For instance, are you the first human it has encountered? Has it recently been pushed around by another bear? Has it become food-conditioned by feeding on garbage?

Learn to interpret bear behaviour and respond accordingly. (Stay tuned for an upcoming Bear Brief that will address bear behaviour and communication). But, perhaps most importantly, avoid bear encounters by making lots of noise, travelling in groups of more than two people, carrying bear deterrents, leashing dogs and remaining alert for bears and bear sign in the area, especially during the late summer-fall period.

As Stephen Herrero has said, “The basics of safety aren’t about how well you deploy a firearm or how effectively you get to your bear spray, but how you avoid getting in those situations in the first place.”

Bear sightings should be reported to Fish and Wildlife during office hours at 403-562-3289 and after hours to the Report-a-Poacher hotline at 1-800-642-3800. Your reports help track bear movements in Crowsnest Pass and help protect the bears and the community.

Reporting to the Manager of Recreation Services, the Recreation and Parks Labourer is responsible for the upkeep and maintenance of the Memorial Community Centre Arena, Multi-Purpose Facility swimming pool, public parks and playgrounds, buildings, athletic fields, municipal campground and related facilities.

Duties include custodial service, building maintenance and snow removal, operation of parks maintenance equipment and performance of other general park maintenance requirements as required.

Minimum qualifications: • 18 years of age and Grade 12 or equivalent • Valid Class 5 Driver’s License • Arena Operator, Park & Sportsfield Operator, Swimming Pool Operator, First Aid and WHMIS Training Certificates would be an asset • Knowledge of the recreation industry, experience in municipal recreation facilities and a landscaping background is desirable • Must be reliable and possess a strong work ethic, establish and maintain and effective, cooperative, and productive working relationship with other employees and the public.

Hours of Work: According to the Collective Agreement Section 4(d) the hours of work for permanent staff working in the arena will vary according to the regular scheduled shifts but shall not be less than forty (40) hours per week.

During the summer/parks operations, hours of work will generally be Monday through Friday 8:00-4:30, with occasional evening and/or weekend shifts as facility operations require.

Fall movie series kicks off with some very wild tales

By Jillian Lawson Our new Toronto Film Festival Circuit movie season is about to begin at the Fox Theatre in Pincher Creek.

Unlike past seasons, movies will be screened every week, except Thanksgiving weekend, and half of the screenings will be Sunday matinees. Watch for our new tagline: Meet Me at the Movies.

The TIFF Circuit offers communities like ours the opportunity and good fortune to see some of the world’s very best films.

Our first film, acclaimed by audiences and critics alike, is the Oscar-nominated comedy Wild Tales, six related tales full of the cathartic vengeance against grievances, real or imagined, we humans occasionally dream of.

What separates civilization from barbarism, as Argentinian director Damián Szifrón sees it, is the thin veil of social inhibitions that prevents us from retaliating with violence to the many slights and aggravations of daily life.

“What differentiates us from animals is our capacity to restrain ourselves,” says the 39-year-old director.

“Most of us live with the frustration of having to repress oneself, but some people explode. This is a movie about those who explode, and we can all understand why they do.”

As one New York Times reviewer observed, Wild Tales is like a director’s experiment in human psychology, his and ours, in the exploration of unfettered, if inadvisable, vengeance and the blurred limits of morality.

There is the critic who soul-crushed the former boyfriend of the woman sitting across the aisle, the waitress who realizes her only customer once did her family a social injustice, the over-the-top road rage in the desert, the father’s undeserved parking ticket, the family that tries to cover up a hit-and-run, and then perhaps the oldest conflict there is, between a cheating man and a woman.

In Argentina, Wild Tales is the country’s all-time box office champion and a social phenomenon that turned lines into catchphrases and characters into folk heroes.

The other five movies this season are a mix of humour, suspense, epic drama and sweeping documentary.

Living quietly in a world of extroverts For years I tried to be a pretend extrovert because, in my public persona, I thought that’s what others expected. It was exhausting.

One day when I asked a friend at a conference which workshop I should take that afternoon, he pointed to the Myers-Briggs (Personality) Type Indicator program.

What a revelation to find, along with other personality characteristics, that I was an introvert — and that introverts have a unique and powerful strength of their own.

Extroverts are the ones we notice because they are the first to ask questions, the quickest to speak before an audience, the last to want to leave the party.

Introverts feel inferior because they think of the best arguments the next day, they need to rest before they go to a party, and there is always a checking with the inner person before they answer a question.

But at least one-third of the people we know are introverts.

What I found was that it was OK to tell someone I would get back to them after I’d considered their query.

When I led a church service, I needed a moment of quiet before I could begin, and I understood about feeling tired but exhilarated afterwards because I was doing something I loved.

The more I learned about the strengths of introversion, the more I enjoyed the joy of being bookish, and the ability to sit quietly with a parishioner. I realized some of the depth God had hidden within.

What a pleasure, too, to think about the strengths of the mentors who nurtured me: my grandmother in her flower garden, my dad with his cabinet-making, my professor who always had time to sit, listen and give guidance.

Isn’t it wonderful how God has created such an array of human beings with unique qualities!

All are invited to gun club open house

By Brad Quarin If you’re interested in hunting and target shooting or want to give your child a taste of the sport, the Oldman River Gun Club invites you to an open house on Saturday.

The open house, which takes place on the club’s range from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., will be an opportunity to try the rifle ranges and shotgun range. You have to bring your own firearm.

A couple of members of the club will also perform demonstrations of shotguns, firearms can be sighted in and refreshments will be available. It’s a good way to kick off the hunting season, says co-ordinator Mike Vidricaire.

The range will be under supervision, and guests can try shooting their .22-calibre rifles there. The event is distinct from a gun show, and guns can’t be purchased at the open house.

The event is open to anyone, with free admission. Sighting in costs $4.

The range can be found half a kilometre south of Crowsnest/Pincher Creek Landfill.

The Oldman River Gun Club is made up of around 100 members from Crowsnest Pass, Pincher Creek and Fort Macleod, Mike says.

It is dedicated to running an approved rifle- and pistol-shooting range, where the club holds shoots with safety procedures.

Teens can rise to the challenge in their own amazing race

By Brad Quarin Teens looking to do something incredible may find the upcoming Amazing Teen Race intriguing.

Many youth have expressed an interest.

“They think it would be a lot of fun,” says Katherine Mertz, project lead for 40 Developmental Assets, which is holding the race. “Some of them are shocked that a big event is happening just for them.”

The Amazing Teen Race is inspired by the TV show The Amazing Race. It will involve a run through Blairmore, but will be distinct from other community races.

Along the way, teams will stop to tackle different physical and mental challenges provided by a number of groups and businesses partnering with 40 Developmental Assets.

The 40 assets are designed to build a healthier community by providing youth with adult role models and new opportunities.

The Amazing Teen Race will engage a number of

assets. “We felt it was a good way to bring the youth and the community together,” Katherine says.

Adults will provide youth with new opportunities with each challenge at the race, so teens can meet new people, build relationships, and maybe develop an interest in a new skill.

“It also shows that the community values youth,” she says. “It’s huge at that age to feel supported by your community.”

Hopefully, the race will also take away from the bad rap local teens often get. “[It] shows the community and the adults in the community that these teenagers are human too, and they have great ideas and they have passions,” she says.

On Sept. 26, the teens will race in teams of four, all running together and often working together on the challenges. Other challenges require teams to split up.

The challenges will involve many skills, including memorization, solving puzzles and riddles, and learning about other cultures. At one stop, local firefighters

will allow teens to experience physical challenges that firefighters typically encounter on the job.

Young 40 Assets members Aislyn Wheelock and Aimee Lahoda are excited about the challenges arranged for the event, Katherine says.

The race is expected to take the whole day, with the first team setting out at 9:30 a.m. The event will end with a barbecue, maybe at 6 p.m.

Registration costs $20 per teen or $80 per team, and is open to anyone in grades 7 to 12. A maximum of 15 teams and 60 participants are allowed.

Organizers don’t plan to make money from the event. The registration fees cover race packages containing snacks and Amazing Race T-shirts, prizes and the barbecue.

Mass registration at Bellevue’s M.D. McEachern Community Centre this Wednesday, from 6 to 8 p.m., will be the perfect occasion to sign up for the event.

Registration will also be taken on Thursday at the municipal office.
