All of us at Shootin’ the Breeze extend tremendous thanks to Stan and Lily Skahl.

For more than three years, they ensured the paper was delivered to our readers.

It didn’t matter if the weather was windy, freezing, or so nice they’d rather be doing something else, they were always out and about in Pincher Creek and Crowsnest Pass with smiles on their faces.

Photographer gets a pleasant surprise What a surprise to open Shootin’ the Breeze [Sept. 2 issue] and see that old print of the famous Burmis Tree! I made this image on a warm summer day in 1972, as best as I can recall. I’m a Lethbridge guy and travelled to the Pass whenever I could, but didn’t get to move here until 2000.

The print was made in my darkroom shortly after that summer day. I had begun to print 16 by 20 inches, and this was an early effort. I’m sure the discoloration is due either to my inexperience in proper rinsing of the print, or simply to exposure to ultraviolet waves over time — the print is 40 years old.

There are quite a few prints of this image “out there,” as I’ve sold and distributed more of that photo than any other I’ve ever made, and a few dozen were chosen as awards for longtime employees in the Livingstone Range school district.

There are copies in Japan, Vancouver, Edmonton and Toronto, that I know of, and wherever else they

may have found their way.

I was using a 35-millimetre SLR at the time, probably a Miranda, or had maybe graduated to a Nikon Photomic FTn by then. The film was Tri-X Pan rated at 400 ISO (ASA in those days). The large bright spot in the upper left sky, masquerading as the sun, is actually lens flare — but I liked it. All the prints were either black and white or toned sepia.

There is a copy of the print buried in a Crowsnest Pass time capsule, along with a CD I made of the Lost Creek Fire of 2003 and many other local “artifacts.” Perhaps a reader will have other interesting details about the capsule. I think it’s been buried about 10 years now.

I’m so glad this very pleasant surprise made its way into Shootin’ the Breeze.

Afterwards, the older bodybuilders had the choice of competing in an open category with bodybuilders between 24 and 39.

A lot of older competitors are intimidated by younger ones, but Ryan tried his luck. “You’re there anyway, so you might as well. And I guess it paid off,” he says. “I beat the younger guys.”

Placing first in the open category was a great feeling and a surprise. It also qualifies him for a North American competition in Pittsburgh next year, but he doesn’t expect to go.

Instead, Ryan will be aiming to go to the Canadian competition again next year, making further improvements.

We miss their playful Wednesday morning banter at the office, and know everyone along their routes appreciated their friendly good humour as well.

We wish you both all the best in your retirement.

Recipe for success: Chefs on 2 Thirteen

By Erin Fairhurst “This has been our busiest day yet!” Andrea Massingham says as she pulls up a chair to sit down. As though to prove her point, a customer comes through the door and Andrea has to jump back up to her feet again.

Andrea and her husband, Shawn, are helming a new business in Bellevue. The Chefs on 2 Thirteen will feature a delicatessen, a bakery, catering services, frozen meals to “take and bake” (today’s selections are bison, beef and chicken pot pies, cabbage rolls and lasagna) and a full-complement restaurant that will serve breakfast, lunch and dinner. Oh, and Andrea is a seasoned pastry chef, so make sure to leave room for dessert.

“This is our semi-retirement,” Andrea says with a rueful smile.

In the background, a flurry of activity is taking place: Contractors are busy renovating the building, which will eventually feature a daytime café area, a separate dining area with an emphasis on relaxed fine dining, two kitchens and a

bakery-deli.

Already the front half of the building is set up to receive customers for coffee and daytime meal specials, and to service their bakery needs.

A vintage stove, complete with an old-fashioned glass crock of oversized dill pickles ($1.25 each) dominates the centre of the room, and a smattering of cookbooks ranging from Jamie Oliver to classic cuisine are on display.

“All it needs are some red checkered curtains,” says Andrea as she surveys the progress.

Since relocating to Crowsnest Pass nearly a year ago, Andrea and Shawn have had their hands full — from renovating their building to designing a menu and baking up a storm.

“It’s been moving really fast,” says Andrea.

The pace certainly doesn’t seem to faze her. Perhaps she owes some credit to her grandmother, who once ran her own catering business.

“I stayed with her during the summers in Toronto, and she’d put me to work,” recalls

My Little Corner Suicide is a difficult topic of conversation.

After a dear friend’s brother died by suicide last spring, it has become a frequent subject of discussion. There is much to talk about — grief, guilt, anger, disbelief, fear, sadness and strategies to move forward. This all mixes in with precious memories and tears.

Sept. 10 was World Suicide Prevention Day and the spotlight was on mental health. That light shone directly on 25 of us who spent the weekend taking mental health first-aid training in Crowsnest Pass.

We spent 12 hours learning to listen critically when someone experiences a mental health crisis, assess their level of risk and move forward from there to assist an individual toward getting proper care and treatment.

Determining the level of risk is crucial and, of course, response varies based on your quick assessment of a situation.

We covered mental health issues including substance-related disorders, mood disorders like depression and bipolar disorder, anxiety disorders and psychotic disorders such as schizophrenia.

Some exercises were eye-openers as instructor Erin Musick-Neily guided us through situational experiences. One gave most of us a completely different perspective on a disorder I knew only through clinical definitions. It was very effective.

The atmosphere was very open, with considerable sharing of personal experiences. I’ve always

An editorial by Shannon Robin felt that if someone can learn from my dances with anxiety and depression, then it’s worth stepping out of my comfort zone to share.

Mental health problems are common, too common. The impact of these issues on society is significant and awareness and open-mindedness are critical to making a positive difference.

Knowing the signs of mental distress and how to respond to different situations and risk levels could truly make you a lifesaver. Offering mental health first aid takes a combination of knowledge, empathy and courage. It’s also about defying stigmas.

By the end of this weekend, 75 people will be trained in mental health first aid, with costs covered

by Darcy’s Nature Walk for Mental Wellness.

How amazing is that?

The Rinaldi family have stepped up to raise awareness for mental health in their community and it is truly inspiring. They have lost dearly to the darkness of suicide, yet Julie, Randi Lynn, and their dad, Randy, march bravely forward, raising awareness and helping others.

They are making a significant difference.

As one who has benefited directly, I am most grateful. If I can take what I’ve learned and have the confidence to step into a situation involving mental distress, help a friend deal with her loss, or be a little kinder to myself, I too will make a difference.

Alternate transportation services for seniors Researchers at the University of Alberta have developed a toolkit that can be used by communities to implement alternate transportation services for seniors.

They are offering a workshop in Lethbridge on Oct. 15. Individuals, local government representatives, volunteer organizations and seniors organizations from Lethbridge and surrounding communities interested in championing such an initiative are invited to attend this free half-day workshop.

The goal is to provide attendees with the information they would need to start an alternate transportation service for seniors in their communities.

Space is limited to 30 people. Registrants are accepted on a first come, first served basis, so register early.

Reap the fall harvest at Kootenai Brown Pioneer Village

By Brad Quarin If you find your way to Kootenai Brown Pioneer Village on Saturday, you can try finding your way through the giant bale maze.

The attraction is returning to the Harvest Festival, an annual celebration at KBPV in the tradition of harvest celebrations in agricultural communities.

The bale maze hasn’t been used in the Harvest Festival for three years, so they’re bringing it back, says Denise Somerville at KBPV. It will be on the museum grounds.

The Harvest Festival is one of three main events held at the Pincher Creek museum each year, and the main event of the fall. The other two are Canada Day and the Christmas cookie sale.

Hopefully, it will bring people to the museum,

where they can see the historical buildings for only $2 admission, rather than the usual $10.

Children can also step back into the past with an old-fashioned kids carnival, playing the games children played in the old days. You can buy coupons to play 10 games for $5.

The day will also see ropemaking, bouncy tents, music, balloon animals and a concession serving chili and buns.

The Harvest Festival takes place the same day as the Heritage Acres Fall Fair. Denise says KBPV hopes to be able to join the celebrations in future years, so that part of the day is spent at KBPV and part at Heritage Acres.

In the meantime, she hopes people will take time to visit both on Saturday.

The festival runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Live music series coming to Lundbreck

By Erin Fairhurst A series of Home Routes concerts are coming to Lundbreck, thanks to a group of thoughtful seniors who want to support young musicians.

Home Routes is a not-for-profit organization that connects concerts with host communities, and members of the Windsor Heritage Drop-In Centre in Lundbreck have decided to try hosting a series of six live folk concerts.

“One of our members had been involved with Home Routes before, in Lethbridge, and so the suggestion was made that perhaps we should get involved,” says Agnes Thibert, one of the seniors organizing the concerts.

The seniors group contacted Home Routes for details on the program. Basically, the Windsor Heritage Drop-In Centre would provide the venue, promote the concerts, sell tickets and provide the performers with meals and lodging, and all proceeds would go to the performers in an effort to support young artists.

“We decided to go for it,” says Agnes. “This is going to be a totally new experience for us.”

Agnes herself is not a musician, but is a music lover and is excited to meet the musicians. She will be hosting the Tattletale Saints at her home later this month.

“I’ve listened to some of their music on their website, and I was impressed,” she says.

Agnes admits she doesn’t know much else about the Nashville-based group, aside from the fact that the award-winning duo wrote to tell her they are vegetarians.

“I’m just looking forward to providing a home for them while they’re here.”

Agnes says the goal is to sell at least 30 tickets per concert, and already sales are going well for the first concert, by Tattletale Saints, on Wednesday, Sept. 23, at 8 p.m.

Modern blues and rock musician Jesse Roper will perform Oct. 22, and Manitoba musicians Until Red will be in Lundbreck on Nov. 20.

After a concert hiatus in December and January, things start back up Feb. 6 with fiddlers Spencer & Rains. The series winds down with Ian Tamblyn playing March 6 and Ontario duo Emily Stam and John David Williams on April 12.

All shows start at 8 p.m. and tickets are $20. Tickets must be purchased in advance through Agnes at 403-628-2011 or Lou Niven at 403-627-7963.

The Windsor Heritage Drop-In Centre is located right on the main drag in Lundbreck, on Breckenridge Avenue.

MUSSEL-SNIFFING DOGS, continued from page 10 Diesel passed his “interview,” which required him to focus on a ball despite distractions. Diesel is a very focused dog who likes to work.

“He is so interesting to watch because he is so excited to do it,” she says.

The dogs were trained with help from the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, and began working in Alberta in July.

A typical day in Burmis begins when Diesel is dressed up in his uniform, consisting of vests and protective booties. The uniform is an important signal to the dog that it has a job to do. Cindy says Hilo can be “a terror” at home, but becomes “stoic” once in uniform.

At the boat inspections, Diesel sniffs for mussels, and if he picks up the scent he gives a “passive alert” — meaning he sits. An inspector tells the dog to point out exactly where the mussels are, and then the boat is decontaminated with high pressure and hot water.

Diesel and the other dogs are afterwards rewarded with a ball or toy.

Cindy says the dogs are highly efficient and accurate, and make the inspections fun for boat owners. People want the dogs to inspect their boats, after which they get business cards reading “You’ve been sniffed.”

“The dogs are great ambassadors to our program,” she says.

Across Alberta, 17,000 boats have been inspected this season, and 12 have required decontamination. No infected boats have been discovered in Burmis.

To keep the dogs happy, the inspectors occasionally plant mussels for them to find, Cindy says.

With summer ending, Diesel’s workload is becoming lighter, but the dogs will be back next year.

Allegiance to the Queen reaffirmed over a cup of tea

By Brad Quarin In an age where people are living longer, Queen Elizabeth II made history last week by becoming the longest-reigning monarch the United Kingdom and Canada have had.

Pincher Creek residents gathered to mark the milestone, meeting at Kootenai Brown Pioneer Village to reaffirm their allegiance to the Queen and enjoy some tea. Pincher Creek was one of around 100 communities in Canada that observed the occasion, following an invitation to do so by the Monarchist League of Canada.

One resident who attended was Margaret Keer. She grew up in England during the Second World War and remembers Elizabeth showing support to the troops.

Margaret was about 16 when Elizabeth became Queen in 1952.

“She’s been a very good Queen,” Margaret says, believing the monarch shows calm leadership.

She is “genuine to the ordinary people,” Connie Hochstein says.

It was something to witness the milestone.

Mayor Don Anderberg also spoke on the occasion. “She’s the only monarch most of us have ever known. How fortunate we are,” he said.

“What a challenge to all our fellow Canadians that we might live our lives inspired by her good example.”

In the 63 years Elizabeth has been Queen, Canada has had 11 prime ministers and has celebrated its centennial and the patriation of the Constitution.

Three years ago, many residents of Pincher Creek and Crowsnest Pass were honoured with the Diamond Jubilee Medal, marking the 60th anniversary of the Queen’s accession to the throne.

Start your engines to support Pincher Creek schools

By Brad Quarin For a fourth year, Castle Ford is bringing Drive One 4 UR School to Pincher Creek.

For every test drive taken this Saturday, Ford of Canada will pay $20 to support the activities of Matthew Halton High School and St. Michael’s School.

People often assume there must be some catch, but there is no cost or obligation for test drivers.

“Just come out and support these kids,” says Pete Schauerte, Castle Ford general manager.

Ford of Canada will donate up to $6,000, to be divided between the Friends of St. Michael’s and the Matthew Halton Booster Club.

Last year, Pincher Creek came close to the maximum with $5,820.

Castle Ford is aiming to top that.

A limited number of Drive One events are held in Canada each year, so it’s impressive that Pincher Creek has had it four years in a row. That’s not even counting the two times Castle Ford has held it for Crowsnest Pass and Lundbreck.

Pete believes Castle Ford has repeatedly secured the event because it is based in a rural area and has community support, guaranteeing a response to Drive One. Kelly Cooley, director of Friends of St. Michael’s, says the money will go to its accounts for athletics, cultural events and class materials.

The money Matthew Halton High School receives will pay for busing of students for field trips and other outings, says Renee Van Loon, booster club bookkeeper.

Drive One 4 UR School runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at Ranchland Mall, and there will be a concession.

Calahan Henry Bruder passed away tragically on Sept. 6, 2015, near Beaver Mines.

Calahan was born in Pincher Creek on March 1, 1996. He lived and went to school in Pincher Creek.

Calahan was the happiest when he was working with his dad, Lorne, on the rigs. Nothing in life made him more proud. He was most comfortable being with family and friends sharing, throughout his years, his love of the mountains.

His passions were hockey, dirt biking, snowboarding, hiking and horseback riding. Calahan excelled in everything he did. He was a great athlete and played with the utmost sportsmanship.

Calahan is survived by his loving parents, Sue and Lorne Bruder, sister Sage (Ryan Williamson), brothers Freddie Bruder and Whyat Bruder, all of Pincher Creek; aunts Jennie (Don) Marsden of Fort MacLeod and Sandy Young of Pincher Creek; grandmother Freda Bruder of Pincher Creek; and many dear friends who became family.

Calahan was predeceased by his aunt Lillian Turnbull.

The celebration of life was held at the Twin Butte Hall in Twin Butte on Sept. 12, 2015.

Thunder Challenge supports Crowsnest Pass Minor Hockey

By Brad Quarin Hockey fans have a chance to take in an exciting game in Coleman this week and support Crowsnest Pass Minor Hockey at the same time.

For a seventh time, the Crowsnest Pass Minor Hockey Association is hosting the Thunder Challenge, featuring teams from the Western Hockey League. The Lethbridge Hurricanes, Kootenay Ice and Calgary Hitmen are playing at the Crowsnest Sports Complex, with the WHL being only one notch below the National Hockey League.

The Thunder Challenge is the major fundraiser for Crowsnest Pass Minor Hockey. A progressive 50-50 raffle will be held, with each ticket at $5.

The winner is guaranteed at least $2,000, and possibly $5,000.

The event allows the association to have some of the lowest registration fees in its league in southern Alberta, says communications co-ordinator Kyla Cytko.

Lethbridge registration fees can be around $700 to $800 per year, while in Crowsnest Pass they’re around $300.

This year’s Thunder Challenge runs Thursday to Saturday, with only evening games. In past years, the challenge was held Friday to Sunday, but Sunday afternoon games didn’t draw great attendance, Kyla says. The teams are happier with the new arrangement.

Tickets are $12 at the door, but only $10 if you get them beforehand from a hockey parent. Tickets are sold at Copy Magic and Servus Credit Union as well.

Life is short, hurry hard — Crowsnest Curling Club is ready to rock Summer has passed and it’s time to break out the old curling brooms and shoes — curling season is nearly upon us.

The Crowsnest Curling Club is ready to get the new season underway and wants to attract more members. We’re always looking to expand our teams; the more people we get out, the more fun we have. What better thing is there to do on a winter’s night?

Oct. 1, the club is holding its registration night at the Coleman arena, which is also a great opportunity to meet new teams and reconnect with curlers. Registration begins at 7 p.m. and we’re looking for singles, couples and groups.

People are needed in all of the club’s leagues, including the open, women’s, mixed, seniors’ and family leagues. The open league plays Wednesday night, mixed league plays Thursday night, and the seniors play Monday and Thursday in the afternoon, on a drop in-basis.

In early October there will be free practice games and curling clinics at the Sportsplex for beginners and those getting reacquainted with curling after a summer away. The clinics will include coaching and tips and the day will include lunch and a fun game. The instructors are Tony Vastenhout and Flora Griffiths, who are certified curling coaches.

By Brad Quarin Heritage Acres Farm Museum will celebrate its fall fair on Saturday with mini horses and by showing how to make fabric.

The fair features a bench show – in which people can bring their home cooking, sewing and pets for judging – and other demonstrations and exhibits.

One new display at the Heirloom Handiwork exhibit will show people how fleece is turned into fabric. “It’s really interesting … to see how the raw material gets made into a finished product,” says Daniel Stewart, executive director of Heritage Acres.

From 1 to 3 p.m., visitors will also see the Southern Alberta Working Herding Dog Association in action with the Due South dog demo.

“The dogs are always a huge draw,” Daniel says.

Teaming them up with mini horses for the first time this year should make this demo a howling good time.

A mini horse is distinct from a pony, being a dwarf horse, says SAWHDA member Judi Snowdon.

The mini horses can drive carts, and at the demo will take them through a course with barrels.

A dog matched with each horse will run the course next, and their times will be combined to find a winning dog-and-horse team.

The bench show is a staple of the Heritage Acres Fall Fair, and will see locals competing in nine categories. People will bring their grasses and grains, pets and poultry, home cooking, honey, cheeses, flowers, canning and vegetables for judging, Daniel says. Each category is further broken up into smaller competitions for breads, buns and more.

To enter a bench show, take an entry to the loft of the red barn between 8 and 10 a.m. on Saturday.

If the weather co-operates, demonstrations will include a threshing bee, in which people will see threshing with pre-cut hay. Visitors were interested in seeing this last year. The demo proves it wasn’t easy or quick to farm in the past.

“It’s quite different from the combines they have now,” Daniel says.

All exhibits at the museum will be open and the turkey shoot begins at 10 a.m.

The fair runs from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and costs $10 per person or $25 per family. Daniel thanks the coordinators, volunteers and sponsors — Co-op, Parent Link and Perfect Posies.

Chamber seeks out excellence in Pincher Creek

By Brad Quarin Excellence in Pincher Creek is constant even as the way to recognize it is changing.

The Pincher Creek and District Chamber of Commerce is accepting nominations for the 20th annual Awards of Excellence, with tweaks to the categories.

The eight categories are being narrowed to seven, as the customer-service award overlapped with the other categories, says chamber administrator Lieve Parisis.

Nominees for customer service were often also nominated for the large business, small business and employee of the year awards. To a degree, customer service is important to all categories.

The age range for the junior entrepreneur award is also being lowered from 30 and under to 18 and under. This creates more focus on youth, and the past two winners were eight and 18. It’s hoped there will still be nominations to

choose from, and nomination forms have been dropped off at local schools. The ideal junior entrepreneur demonstrates leadership skills and determination.

The maximum number of employees to be considered a small business has been raised from nine to 14. Both small and large businesses are honoured for community spirit.

The family-farm award will still recognize farms and ranches for exceptional management and community spirit. The award for environmental stewardship acknowledges awareness and care for the ecosystem, and the employee of the year gives excellent service.

The Spirit of Pincher Creek Award salutes someone who makes a difference in the community, and isn’t necessarily a business award.

The nomination form can be found on page 27 of this issue, and will be accepted until Sept. 30, with the awards night on Oct. 21.

nominee, and nominations should include contact information for the nominees so they can be invited to the event. Nominators can remain anonymous.

Whispers from the winds

By Sally Marcellus It is a busy time of year and we’ve had quite a lot going on.

We’ve had different entertainment during the spring and summer, some sponsored by Whispering Winds and some by our residents social club. We pay for this through our recycling. We plan to have Mary Resak back in the fall and she is an entertainer enjoyed by all.

We had a Mother’s Day tea and a Father’s Day barbecue. Families come to visit and some come to enjoy our barbecues and buffets. Farley Wuth has been coming from the museum, sharing some history of Pincher Creek and southern Alberta. These visits are enjoyed by many.

During the summer outdoor games we had a fishing derby, and then recently scooter races, which were a hoot. Several residents took part in the races, as well as Whispering Winds staff, two town councillors and Golden Life Management from Cranbrook. Leister’s Home Care came from Lethbridge and supplied a couple of new scooters. Some participants were regulars while others were new at it.

Prizes for the races were supplied from the Pincher Creek Co-op, Mrs. P’s Coffee Corner, C&D Floral, Tim Hortons and Golden Life, and Whispering Winds supplied lunch. Local

media took part in the races as well as reporting on this event. Warm weather and smoke did not slow anyone down.

Our bingos held the last Monday of the month brought several players from the community and Crowsnest Pass. We had a break for July and August but will start again in September.

We also plan a crib tournament on Sept. 17 where community residents are welcome. The charge is $8, which includes lunch. Posters are up around town.

We keep busy here with our usual activities: Monday night is whist, Tuesday is church, Wednesday is horse racing, Thursday is crib night and Friday is bingo night. Exercises are three mornings a week, and the coffee pot is always on. You can keep as busy as you want.

We have had several residents move on for more health care, and we also lost Nick, Gerald and Roma. We have had some wonderful times together. We are like a family and new residents are always welcome.

There have been staff changes as well. We still get together for coffee, muffins and sweets, and conversation. We appreciate the staff and their care.

Summer is winding down and now we look forward to the fall activities.

Hours of Work: According to the Collective Agreement Section 4(d) the hours of work for permanent staff working in the arena will vary according to the regular scheduled shifts but shall not be less than forty (40) hours per week.

An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure

By Crowsnest Conservation BearSmart Non-lethal bear management means using negative experiences to modify undesirable bear behaviour without compromising human safety or destroying the animal.

Common methods involve rubber bullets, bear bangers or flares, Karelian bear dogs, and other noisemakers. The intent is to have the bear associate humans and populated areas with the negative experience and thus avoid these areas in the future.

Nonetheless, the greatest successes in bear conflict prevention and most cost-efficient use of resources are recognized when the primary conflict-prevention technique is proper management of attractants such as garbage, birdseed and apples. In other words, bear conflict prevention relies on residents as well as bear managers!

Bear sightings should be reported to Fish and Wildlife during office hours at 403-562-3289 and after hours to the Report-a-Poacher hotline at 1-800-642-3800. Your reports help track bear movements in Crowsnest Pass and help protect the bears and the community.
