Running for the moon

Pinch o’ Crow Creekers wrap up another successful season

By Brad Quarin Cooler weather and rivers running lower signify another season is drawing to a close for the local Pinch o’ Crow Creekers kayak club. It has been a good one for the kayakers, capped by a successful run in the provincial whitewater championships at the end of August.

“We did really well,” says club founder Chuck Lee. The performance of each young paddler exceeded his expectations.

Three kayakers from Pincher Creek and Lundbreck who scored gold medals in the championships are Hannah Penner, Cole Gerber and Tyler Gerber.

Hannah, who is from Lundbreck, placed first in junior women’s kayaking. Pincher Creek’s Tyler Gerber placed first in junior men’s kayaking, while his brother Cole won single men’s canoe.

The club also took home three silver medals and two bronze medals.

“It was a really successful race for all the athletes,” Hannah says.

She considers the championships

a hit since there were many people competing in every category, and a lot of newcomers. Hannah personally competed in multiple categories in kayaking and canoeing.

Training for the championships took all summer, and she attended training camps that went on for a full week. In late July she attended the nationals in Chilliwack, B.C., where she placed first in junior women’s kayaking.

In comparison, the competition at the provincials was less intense for Hannah, but she found the championships to be good practice for getting into the racing spirit. She is 17 and her age category at the provincial whitewater championships was 14 to 18.

The waters were nice and the course had just been repaired after the 2013 floods.

With winter coming up, she intends to keep fit through indoor training and utilizing a gym, pool and paddling machine.

For Cole, 17, the provincials also felt less intense. Much of his most

formidable competition had moved up into other age categories this year.

Instead, the main competition came from his younger brother, Tyler, 15. While Cole placed first in single men’s canoe, a niche for him, the two brothers faced off on junior men’s kayaking.

Tyler says it was a friendly competition, and Cole says each would have rather been beaten by the other than by someone outside of the family.

The two brothers have been kayaking for the same amount of time.

Tyler says he started in the Pincher Creek swimming pool for fun, and then became serious about it.

Tyler spent much of the winter before the provincials training in the gym, and trained more in the summer with coach Kyle Saganiuk.

In contrast, Cole says he had been working for much of the summer and didn’t get to paddle much.

Rigorous training may have paid off, as Tyler came out ahead by 6/100ths of a second.

Cole says that exact figure was determined by laser beams that sense

when a boat passes by. He respects that his brother worked hard for the result.

While the siblings were easy-going about the rivalry, Tyler says that as the younger brother it was nice to come out on top. “I’m happy he showed up and gave me a run for my money,” Tyler says.

He calls it a great race on his favourite river in Alberta, with constant water levels and a “gorgeous” setting.

From here, his goal would be to pass Canadian team trials in May and compete in the world championships.

Chuck believes a few of his paddlers may go on to participate in the worlds, which will be held in Poland in 2016. If they make it, this will be the first time Pinch o’ Crow Creekers will compete in that country, Chuck says.

The next national competition will be held in Quebec in August 2016.

The kayak season starts up again in January with sessions at the Pincher Creek swimming pool.

TRANSPLANT, continued from page 3 same time, but I know they are in good hands,” Dawn says. “We can say we’re strong moms all we want, but those will be our babies in there, and somebody’s going to need to pick us up when we fall.”

“Because it’s a severe disease over a long period of time, it often leads to the breakup of families, loss of friendships and breakup of marriages,” says Dr. Eksteen. “Leading up to a transplant, people often ail for many years. It’s also financially penalizing, which places huge stress on the family.”

Lisa and Benji were counselled that 90 per cent of couples do not stay together through the transplant process.

“I gave him an out before we were married,” Lisa says.

Benji didn’t take it. He didn’t even consider it.

“We are very proud of him,” says Loreen. “There is a lot of mixed emotion. To risk his own health, safety and security for the woman he loves is huge. He walked into this with his eyes open, and it validates that we taught him to be a giving, loving person.”

Dr. Eksteen sees possibilities for Lisa and Benji. “It will open up new things for them,” he says. “Neither have been able to follow careers, and Benji has dedicated his life to her. They haven’t been able to plan a family, and this now becomes a realistic option. This is a hope for them to really start living and building their lives and careers and family.”

Benji is anxious in this time leading up to the surgery, while Lisa feels scared. “I’m not scared of the surgery, but I’m scared of what comes afterward,” she says.

“I’m anxious,” Benji adds, “but for the first time in a long time, I’m happy.”

It’s easy to think of their story as one of a damsel in distress and her knight in shining armour, but Benji says there have been some very dark times in the past five years. They’ve lived in constant fear of Lisa’s disease, and now there is light at the end of the tunnel for them both.

“I’m not sure it’s a good thing, but I don’t think I’ve ever accepted that death is a possibility,” Lisa says.

Without hesitation, both Lisa and Benji say that a perfect day for them in the future would be to have a baby.

“All Lisa has wanted is to be a mom, and this disease has taken that away from her,” Benji says. After a healthy recovery, starting a family together is their next dream. “She needs to be a mom, and that’s going to happen,” he adds.

They are also excited at the prospect of giving back and helping others once they have recovered.

Lisa knocks on the wooden kitchen table while saying she hasn’t been in the hospital for about five months. It is important for her to be as healthy and as strong as possible in these weeks prior to the transplant.

Benji has learned to administer medication and monitor for side effects. “It took a very long time to get onto a good antibiotic plan,” he says. “Nurse Benji was giving her antibiotics night and day, and finally after so much trial and error they’ve found something that’s working. Now we just need to make it to the 19th.”

They are grateful for the flexibility and support that Benji’s employers, Errol Nystrom and Dale O’Brien, have offered. A donation made by their company left Lisa and Benji in awe.

Sandy learned that behind Dawn’s smiles, something devastating was happening — her daughter was dying. “I was heartbroken. She asked if I could help her. I cried,” Sandy says. “Raising money to help Lisa and her husband … was a small but meaningful challenge that I gladly accepted.”

Sandy put her skills and connections to work. She came up with the name Take Part of Me, created a website and asked country recording artist Lori Kole to write a song. Dawn began writing a blog, a Facebook page was created and a GoFundMe account was established.

You may even recall a pirate passing out eyeballs in the Pincher Creek parade. On them was a link to www.takepartofme.net, where people can learn more about Lisa and Benji, and about liver disease. That pirate was Sandy.

With help from Daryl Burton and Dawn, she has organized a fundraiser this Friday evening at the Lethbridge Lodge to help the couple with their financial burden. It includes dinner, silent and live auctions and music by Lori Kole and Hillbilly Arms.

A highlight of the evening will be the debut of Lori’s song and video.

“It’s going to hit a lot of people,” Dawn says. It’s their whole story wrapped up in a song.”

Sandy isn’t finished yet. “Next up is film. The story of this young couple has touched me and everyone around them, with awe-inspiring courage and love. It’s what movies are made of. And, I will make it so.”

What does GoFundMe mean?

I’ve been asked this question several times in the past week after promoting fundraising for several local people.

GoFundMe is a means for individuals or groups to do large-scale fundraising online. This type of crowdfunding is used for many things and in many ways.

While it’s a free service to sign up for, and there is no cost to promote a fundraising campaign, eight per cent from every donation is retained by GoFundMe as its fee.

Everyone starting a campaign needs to assess whether or not the value of potentially reaching around the world for donations is worth the fees incurred. Most people I’ve spoken with feel it has been, in their particular cases.

Last year, the band Bastard Poetry used it to raise money to produce their second album. In this scenario, they asked their fans to pre-purchase the CD. There were larger incentives, such as a spot in one of their music videos, for larger donations. In the end, all who contributed to their campaign received something in return and the band had the funds in hand for topnotch production of their album.

More often, what one receives in return is simply the knowledge that they have done something to help

another in need.

In light of so many recent tragedies, need is high in our communities right now.

There are funds established to raise money to cover funeral costs for Hanne Meketech of Coleman ($3,655 of $5,000 goal has been reached); for Gord McMullen of Pincher Creek, who is rebuilding after a house fire ($5,655 of $10,000 goal has been reached); and for Lisa and Benji Husband (Take Part of Me), who are preparing for Lisa’s liver transplant ($6,650 of $25,000 goal has been reached).

You can find these campaigns easily by going to www.gofundme.com and entering a name in the search box.

Fundraising for Terry Blanchette and Hailey Dunbar-Blanchette is being managed by staff at Pure Country Grill and Pub in Frank and donations can be made there.

If receiving a charitable donation receipt is important to you, it doesn’t hurt to ask those in charge of the fundraising if there is an option, aside from online giving, with receipts issued.

Afternoon art nurtures little artists

By Erin Fairhurst For the fourth year in a row, the Allied Arts Council of Pincher Creek is hosting the popular Friday afternoon children’s art classes at Lebel Mansion.

The classes run from 1:30 to 3 p.m., Oct. 2 through to mid-December, with the exception of no class on Oct. 9. A teaser class was held earlier this month, and instructor Laura Pearce says it went very well.

“The kids learn not only about art, but about different artists,” she says. “In our last class we learned about Emily Carr and then did some projects based on what we learned about her and her style. The kids really enjoyed it — they soak up the information like sponges.”

Laura teaches art at Matthew Halton High School in Pincher Creek, but makes sure to clear her Friday afternoons for this special class. “This is a place for them to express themselves in new and creative ways,” Laura says of the class.

And what if your child is the kind who doesn’t like colouring within the lines? That’s perfect. “The most important thing is for them to have fun,” says Laura.

Each class has a specific theme, and the young students work on a project related to that theme. For example, at the Oct. 2 class, students will use tape to create a negative space on the canvas. Tape will also be used to create lines and shape on a canvas, while the budding artist creates an image around it. Once the canvas is complete, the little Picasso can remove the tape and admire the effect of the finished product.

The final two classes in December will focus on a Christmas-related project.

Kootenai Brown volunteers receive provincial honour

By Brad Quarin It was a fun Harvest Festival for visitors at Kootenai Brown Pioneer Village last week, and a memorable one for the museum with a very special honour for two key volunteers.

Colleen Casey-Cyr, president of the Pincher Creek and District Historical Society, and Francis Cyr, director, received the Alberta Centennial Medal and a congratulatory message from Premier Rachel Notley. The honours were delivered by Mayor Don Anderberg and Reeve Brian Hammond.

“They were so nice to us,” Colleen says. “Lots of thanking us for our participation in the community events and being ringleaders here around the museum.”

It’s been a long time coming. The Cyrs have been involved in the historical society and KBPV for 16 years and have been vital in preserving Pincher Creek history. Of course, they are backed

by a team of other volunteers and staff.

As president, Colleen leads meetings, applies for grants and signs cheques, but says she has the most fun working hands-on with history at the museum. Before our interview last week, the Cyrs, other volunteers, and visitors from Lethbridge teamed up to dig a hole for a signpost using antique tools, and everyone had a blast.

“We’re working on all these good things,” she says.

Colleen often looks at buildings and vehicles donated to KBPV and makes the initial call on whether the museum should pursue their preservation.

While Francis says his wife is the one who does the talking and comes up with the ideas, he’s the guy who makes them reality.

As a director, Francis is a member of the historical society board and describes himself as the See CYR AWARD, continued on page 9

The museum is currently made up of nearly 30 buildings. “The maintenance involved in 30 buildings is unbelievable, and it’s constant,” Colleen says.

She has to secure the materials for all volunteers to work on, and the money to get the job done. “This is preserving Pincher Creek’s history, and I like to think that we’re doing a good job at it, as good as we can possibly do.”

The Cyrs, who own the Bloomin’ Inn, first became involved in the historical society because the museum was $128,000 in debt. The society needed help to figure out how to get into the black, so Colleen joined the financial committee.

Since then, KBPV has never been in debt, but it has been a challenge averting it every year, always requiring thought.

Over the years, Francis and Colleen have always been volunteers.

They say they’ve never been paid and money was never the motivation.

“I just love it here, and things are always changing because of the donations that come in,” she says.

It has been a lot of work. Francis figures he works at the museum for up to 30 hours a week, while Colleen puts in 35 to 40 hours a week.

Many other volunteers do the same.

“It’s just unbelievable, what it takes to run this place,” she says.

In selecting his proudest achievement, Francis thinks of the additions made to the buildings, with the Turcott building being a particularly big feat.

Colleen thinks her biggest achievement will be marked by the grand opening next year of an area of KBPV reflecting the start of the 20th century.

Having captured the pioneer phase of Pincher Creek history, the historical society will celebrate the buildings it has recently acquired that were on Main Street in 1905. This will coincide with the 50th anniversary of the historical society. “It’s been a dream for the last several years,” she says.

Despite strong winds and several other events happening at the same time in Pincher Creek and Crowsnest Pass, around 125 people still attended this year’s Harvest Festival.

Francis and Colleen were there dressed as scarecrows, a seasonally appropriate guise to welcome the children. Given the costumes, they were impressed that the mayor and reeve recognized them when the time came for the presentation.

The Cyrs received letters of recognition signed by the premier and Liberal Leader David Swann, along with the medal.

They had spoken with Mr. Swann about the museum two months prior, and he was impressed. The Cyrs aren’t sure, but this may help explain why they received the honour.

Afterwards, numerous people congratulated them and said they deserved the pat on the back.

The Cyrs “feel pretty honoured” by the recognition, Colleen says.

“This isn’t why we do it, but it’s sure nice.”

Get the popcorn ready for the Orpheum’s reopening

By Brad Quarin One of the great films of the 1970s is The Last Picture Show, about a small Texas town that, after a series of misfortunes, sees its only theatre close.

For a while it looked like Crowsnest Pass might be in the same boat. Orpheum Theatre in Blairmore was closed indefinitely, with “the last picture show” in November 2014 being a documentary about a local businessman and Second World War veteran, Albino (Nini) Peressini.

But Crowsnest Pass residents will no longer have to drive elsewhere to see a show, as Orpheum Theatre is reopening its doors on Friday.

“Our community didn’t realize what they had until they lost it,” says the new manager, Charles Clarke. Social media buzz about the theatre’s reopening has been fantastic. “We’re looking for the community to support us.”

The theatre is still owned by Becky Fabro.

as managers, and hope to eventually buy it.

The Clarkes opted to take over Orpheum Theatre for their boys, as a family business could create employment opportunities for them and others outside of the family.

Charles is fond of movies himself, and the family saw movies at the Blairmore theatre often before it closed. One family film Charles remembers seeing here is The Croods.

For the Clarkes, business management is familiar territory. Christine ran Mac’s Convenience Store in Blairmore, and they had a family restaurant back in Ontario, Charles says. They arrived in Crowsnest Pass two years ago for his job with the RCMP, which he will still do.

In getting the business running again, the main challenges have been contracting and upgrading the way the popcorn is made, for a better taste. The building may need fixes, as it is nearly 100 years old.

Crowsnest Pass would have lost a piece of its heritage had the theatre stayed closed. The building has a Discover Crowsnest Heritage sign that recounts how carpenter-turnedentrepreneur Peter Umbertino started Orpheum Theatre. It was built by Enrico Pozzi in 1921, with enough room for an orchestra. Back then, all films were silent.

Over the decades, Orpheum Theatre was the scene for political rallies and union meetings, and hosted musicians, magicians and boxing matches. The outside of the building retains its classic look.

The theatre will be open seven days a week.

This week, the first picture show will be Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials, with Hotel Transylvania 2 in 3D expected next week.

Do you know the early signs of cancer?

That’s why the Canadian Cancer Society is reminding men to fight back by watching for early signs of testicular and prostate cancers.

Finding cancer early makes it easier to treat successfully. The first step is to know what’s normal for your body so you can report any unusual changes to your doctor.

Testicular cancer

This is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among males aged 15 to 29.

The good news is that testicular cancer has nearly a 100 per cent survival rate when caught early.

That’s why the Canadian Cancer Society encourages all males, from the time they are 15, to check their testicles and know how they normally look and feel.

The most common signs and symptoms of testicular cancer are: — a painless lump on the testicles — swelling of a testicle or change in the way it feels — pain or discomfort in a testicle or in the scrotum — feeling of heaviness or aching in the lower abdomen

Prostate cancer

Canadian men have a one-in-seven chance of developing prostate cancer in their lifetime.

Again, there’s good news: the survival rate of prostate cancer is greater than 95 per cent if caught early.

The most common signs and symptoms for prostate cancer include: — a need to urinate often, especially at night — an intense or urgent need to urinate — feeling burning or pain during urination — difficulty starting or stopping urine flow — inability to urinate — blood in the urine Remember, having any of these signs doesn’t always mean you have cancer. But you need to see your doctor to rule out the disease.

Young BearSmart volunteer shares the wealth

By Brad Quarin As a sign that BearSmart enjoys the support of Crowsnest Pass residents big and small, the group received its first donation from a child this month.

Deighton Wilkinson celebrated his eighth birthday on Sept. 12 and decided to pay his $286 birthday cash forward to the Crowsnest Pass BearSmart Association.

“They help keep our community safe and it’s really good for the community,” he says. “The BearSmart Association and Fish and Wildlife officers help the community a lot, and I felt that I should give them some money.”

“I’m very impressed with this little guy,” says Fish and Wildlife officer John Clarke. “I’m very, very proud of him.”

Deighton is no stranger to BearSmart. “He’s been actually following us around for a couple years,” John says.

With his parents, Deighton has helped pick apples and watch for bears from a vehicle. “He spotted bears before we did,” John says. “He’s got a bright future ahead of him.”

Deighton says the number of bears he has spotted is “so much I can’t even remember.” He has seen both grizzlies and black bears, some that were pretty big. That can sometimes be a little scary, but John says they will tranquilize and tag some bears.

The cash Deighton received on his birthday came from his friends, grandparents and others in his family.

The donation will be used to buy needed items like lights for the cars and equipment for processing bears, says Deighton’s mom, Michelle Wilkinson, who is a BearSmart volunteer. The group currently has no government funding, and has received donations from other organizations.

Besides the cash, Deighton also received a puppy named Mackenzie and a Lego set as gifts.

Hole-in-one nets a new truck As vice-president of business development at Mammoet, Russ Watters has come from Calgary to play in the Shell Waterton Oilmen’s tournament in Pincher Creek for the past six years.

Hole-in-one prizes are common tournament teasers, and Castle Ford has been a sponsor for 25 years. Westcastle Motors also had a vehicle up for grabs, and Russ joked to his teammates on the first day of the tournament that he was going to wait for the Ford to come up the following afternoon before acing the 13th hole.

Imagine his surprise, after that tongue-in-cheek comment, when he did just that! It was a 157-yard shot, hit with his seven iron, that made Russ the big winner of the day. He says it wasn’t a pretty shot, but it did the trick for his first hole-in-one.

Pete Schauerte, general manager at Castle Motors, shared in Russ’s excitement. Last year Castle Motors and Westcastle Motors each gave away two cars after Gord Francis of Pincher Creek sank a hole-in-one during another local tournament.

Do you know when it’s time to play dead?

By Crowsnest Conservation BearSmart Most bears are no more eager to run into you than you are to run into them, and given enough warning of your approach, they will move off.

An old — and somewhat misleading — adage states: “If it’s black, fight back; if it’s brown, lie down.”

Playing dead is an appropriate response if physical contact is made by a defensive bear, such as one defending a carcass or defending personal space in a sudden close encounter, or a mother grizzly defending her cubs (black bear mothers tend to “tree and flee”).

But it is the wrong thing to do if you’re attacked by a predatory bear.

With either black or grizzly bears, you should fight back with all means at your disposal in the case of a silent, stalking bear that makes physical contact.

Bear sightings should be reported to Fish and Wildlife during office hours at 403-562-3289 and after hours to the Report-a-Poacher hotline at 1-800-642-3800. Your reports help track bear movements in Crowsnest Pass and help protect the bears and the community. By Joyce McFarland Now is the time for all good men, and women, to leave the party they have been at all summer and get back to work in our own community.

Fourteen members and a dog celebrated our new beginnings at the Cottonwood picnic grounds at the Oldman Dam on Sept. 9. Hot fire, hotdogs, burnt marshmallows and all the fixings kicked off our programs for the run-up to Christmas.

First, though, a word about Communities in Bloom: the judges’ decisions are not out yet, but they were impressed with our little town. We at the senior centre were delighted to learn that the beautiful flower garden at the front window, all donated and tended by Louis Patterson, was given honourable mention, and rightly so.

Mary May is using the centre for private bridge lessons and the Adult Learning Centre has limited use of our facility. Some of our program times have been altered slightly to accommodate these items. Check out the October calendar, now ready at the centre.

Nancy Tripp is in good shape and good to go leading tai chi chih exercises on Fridays between 10 and 11 a.m. Nice and easy and lots of fun. She is looking for other people who like the idea.

Not so easy and very serious are the men at the pool table on Wednesday mornings at 9:30, but they do chuckle when they miss the mark. They sound like a happy bunch.

Monday afternoons at 1:30 the centre is open for shuffleboard and five hundred. No reason why two or three activities cannot share time and coffee together. On Thanksgiving Day, Oct. 12, the two groups are planning, among themselves, a lunch downtown at noon before the centre opens for games. They are going to try this “togetherness” for a week or two and see if they can get along. Times are a-changing!

Plans are firmed up for a crib tournament on Oct. 17. Registration is at 9:30 a.m. and the game starts at 10 a.m., with lunch at noon. Cost is $12 per person and there will be a 50-50 draw. Everybody is welcome. Thanks to Marion, Marina, Virginia and Shirley, this will be a great day.

Bingo is on Oct. 30 at 1:30 p.m., and Virginia has some surprises and will be twisting some arms to help the afternoon run smoothly. The jackpot will be $20 and there will be a 50-50 draw. As usual, and with much appreciation, we will enjoy snacks from the Pincher Creek Co-op to go with our coffee after the games. For four years and counting, the Co-op has gladly made this monthly donation to our seniors group.

In closing, with loving and caring hearts for our dear friend Connie Brown, we sadly record her death at Vista Village in late August. Connie was a longtime, dedicated member of the senior centre. She served as board secretary for more years than she could remember, and shared in every happy event and problem with her time and positive involvement in senior affairs. From all her friends at the centre who knew her so intimately, we offer Tracey and Connie’s sons and their extended families our deepest sympathy.

Mona Helen Schaap 1943 – 2015

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Mona Helen Schaap of Coleman. On Sept. 18, 2015, Mona was called to be with the Lord while receiving care at the Chinook Regional Hospital in Lethbridge, after 72 years of a full life.

Mona was born in Calgary on May 16, 1943, to proud parents Stephen and Mary Yagos. She blossomed into a lovely and caring young lady who won the heart of a dashing young military man, Raymond Schaap.

They were further blessed with a loving family of their own. Mona was devoted to the well-being of her family and dedicated herself to their happiness.

She lived by and taught several important life lessons, such as “Always forgive family no matter what,” “You can only do what you are capable of doing” and “No wonder you have a headache — a head like that should ache!” She was young at heart and had a wonderful sense of humour and an unforgettable laugh that made everyone join in.

In her free time, she loved doing crossword puzzles and jigsaw puzzles, baking, camping, gardening and volunteering her time to community events and family functions. She was a dedicated member of the Coleman Legion Ladies Auxiliary and a former member of the Royal Purple.

Mona had an outgoing personality and she always put the needs of others before her own. She will be dearly missed by all those who knew her and will always be fondly remembered.

She is survived by her loving husband, Ray Schaap, of Coleman; her son, Howard (Ryan) Schaap of Brooks; her grandchildren, Natasha John Haluck, Frank Houda, Gregory Schaap, Kimberly Schaap, Taylor Schaap and Derek Schaap; her great-grandchildren, Rylan Carter Haluck and Serenity Haluck; her sisters Violet (George) Williams of Calgary, Dianne (Steve) Krisa of Calgary and Donna (Bob) Grant of Sundre; numerous extended family and the friends that she made throughout her lifetime.

She was predeceased by her parents, Stephen and Mary Yagos; her loving daughter Patricia Schaap; her brothers Bob Yagos and Rudy Yagos; and her sister Dorine Mahon.

The funeral mass was held at Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Church in Blairmore on Sept. 23, 2015, with Father Ben Marino as celebrant.

Margery R. Laatsch passed away peacefully in her sleep Sept. 7, 2015, at the age of 77.

In her early years in Pincher Creek, Margie worked at the Fox Theatre, at the Pincher Creek hospital as a respiratory therapist, and many long hours at the Tastee Freeze, which she and Al owned and operated for five years.

During this time she also got into dog breeding, raising poodles, then yorkies. This in turn led her to open a dog grooming business out of her basement. Pincher had the best-groomed dogs in town, due to her self-taught talents. It was during this time that Margie also worked as a bookkeeper at the Pincher Creek Vet Clinic, where she worked for 22 years before retiring at age 62.

Once retired, she enjoyed travelling, going on gambling junkets with friends, visiting her kids and grandkids, and volunteering for various organizations around Pincher Creek.

Margery was predeceased by Albert in 2005, and is survived by her three children, Kelly Laatsch (Karen) of Kimberley, B.C., Karen Gladstone (Rick) of Stittsville, Ont., and Susan Taylor (Don) of Lethbridge, Alta.

She was a proud grandma to Jordan, Devin, Julia and Timothy. She is also survived by her brother, Don Bruneski (Bridget) of Duncan, B.C., and one nephew, Paul Bruneski (Lawford) of London, England; her son-in-law Doug Taylor; close friends Brenda Lewis and Lynn Dalke; along with many other friends and family.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 4, at Foothills Community Church, 1200 Ken Thorton Blvd., Pincher Creek.

In lieu of flowers, it was Margie’s wish for donations to go to the Pincher Creek Care Bears, PO Box 44, Pincher Creek, AB, T0K 1W0.

It is with intense sorrow and grief that we announce the passing of a devoted father, Terry Patrick Blanchette, and cherished daughter, Hailey-Lynn Elizabeth Dennise DunbarBlanchette, who were horrifically taken from us on Sept 14, 2015. Their tragic deaths have devastated not only our families but those in our community as well.

Terry was born on July 22, 1988, in Fernie, B.C., to parents Bill Blanchette and Faith Durban.

He had many talents, and endearing qualities too numerous to mention. Terry enjoyed snowboarding, cooking, video games, cheering on his favourite sports teams (Montreal Canadiens and Toronto Blue Jays), and those precious moments with his family and friends. He lived life knowing the bitter and the sweet, success and failure, and most of all realizing the blessings life has to offer. He and Cheyenne Dunbar were blessed with a beautiful baby girl.

Terry’s greatest treasure was his precious daughter, Hailey, who was born on Dec. 31, 2012, in Taber, Alta. She transformed Terry into the perfect father and role model for his little princess. Hailey never knew sorrow or hardship; she was the ray of sunshine in her parents’ lives. Hailey loved riding on the quads with her family, playing in the park, hugging every cuddly animal and playing in the water. She embraced every child within reach, ready to make a new friend. Her happy and innocent nature make it so difficult for us all to have to say goodbye.

Both Terry and Hailey deserved lives full of adventure and laughter. May they walk hand in hand into a new kingdom in paradise, where suffering and tears have no place.

Terry is survived by his parents, William Richard Blanchette of Elkford, B.C., and Faith (Allan Eiseman) Durban of St. Augustine, Fla.; his brother, Rick (Kayleigh) Blanchette; his sister, Amanda Blanchette; his nephew, Gage DeSteur; his nieces, Kiana DeSteur and Holly Coates; his grandfather R. Guy Blanchette; and his extended family, colleagues and friends. He was predeceased by his grandparents Bud and Lenore Durban and Ella Blanchette.

Hailey is survived by her devoted mother, Cheyenne Dunbar, of Edmonton; her grandparents, Terry-Lynn (John Palmer) Dunbar, Kevin Dunbar, Bill Blanchette and Faith (Allan Eiseman) Durban; her uncles, Brandon Dunbar and Rick (Kayleigh Coates) Blanchette; her aunt, Amanda Blanchette; and all her friends and pets.

The memorial service honouring their lives will be announced at a later date, upon completion of the police investigation.

Brothers carry on legacy of Blairmore Precision Machining & Welding

By Brad Quarin For 38 years, Blairmore Precision Machining & Welding has served Crowsnest Pass and area with its welding and metal fabrication. That proud legacy will be carried on under its new owners, James and Will Arbuckle. The brothers officially took over at the end of June.

“It’s a great opportunity,” says James, the new president. He gets to be his own boss now.

James, who started out as labourer, has 10 years of experience with Blairmore Precision. He did a welding apprenticeship through Lethbridge College.

When he joined, the business was still based in Blairmore. It moved to a larger shop in Sentinel Industrial Park, west of Coleman, six years ago.

Over the years, he worked his way up to foreman, looking after the shop, and then to project management. The latter involves making drawings and estimates for different jobs, concerning cost and times.

Will, who is currently vice-president, worked

at a welding shop for Teck Coal before joining Blairmore Precision in November 2014. He served as a foreman for eight months, employing many of the skills he had used at Teck.

When owner Eric Muff retired, he offered to sell the business to the Arbuckles. Will believes Eric saw James as an ideal candidate for having “the most well-rounded” skills and 10 years of experience.

Blairmore Precision serves residential, industrial and commercial clients in their metal needs.

Metal fabrication is building with metal, and Blairmore Precision does much of this work for the mines. Farmers often go to the business for equipment repairs, and welding is used for things like handrails at homes and businesses.

The Arbuckles aren’t planning any changes in these services.

For the future, James imagines expanding the business farther east, to handle more farm equipment and do some work for the oilfields.

A personal reflection on suicide

By Sarah-Dash Arbuckle This article is very personal and is written more from a survivor’s viewpoint than that of a doctor or therapist.

I had a boyfriend commit suicide when I was 16 years old. Almost 23 years ago, and I still grieve him.

The part most don’t know about this story of mine is that we had made a death pact and I was planning to go with him.

Am I ever glad I didn’t take my own life! In hindsight, it occurs to me that Duncan Day saved my life.

What I did not know was that he had bipolar disorder and had gone off his medication without anyone knowing. His mom found him in the garage on her birthday. It was the day before Valentine’s Day and the funeral was on my birthday; this has altered my celebration of Valentine’s and my birthday ever since.

Seeing the agony of his parents, family, friends and community was enough for me to consider just how permanent of a decision it is. This woke me up to the precious gift that is life, and to the beauty in all days, even the darkest ones.

In moments of despair, death seems tempting, only as an offer of peace — at least that’s what my teen brain told me. But it’s permanent. There is no changing your mind.

If I had left before my time, I would not have gradu-

ated high school or university, nor achieved a graduate degree. I would not know my adoring husband, would not have a 10-year-old son, nor a three-year-old daughter. I would not have my own business and I would not know my newborn nephew.

I have lived to see my mother beat cancer three times and live to tell about it.

I was able to be by my dad’s bedside as he fought lung cancer.

These might seem like dark times to some of you, and there were moments, but to me they are badges of honour. War wounds. And the battle is of the mind and spirit.

Every accomplishment and every challenge is an opportunity to get stronger, brighter, wiser and calmer.

“So too we rejoice in our suffering, for suffering produces perseverance, perseverance builds character and character leads to hope. The most enduring of these is hope….” — Romans 5:3-5 My goal in writing this article is to show anyone suffering and contemplating suicide that change is guaranteed. Hang on — wait a little longer — it will not always be like this. Hang on, ’cause it gets better!
