A tale of two racers

By Erin Fairhurst Two Crowsnest Pass mountain bikers hit the trails this summer for an epic season of racing.

While their sense of accomplishment at the end of the season was very much the same, their journeys were entirely different.

Darcy Neniska and Karey Watanabe are well-known riders in the community and are active members of UROC —United Riders of Crowsnest — as well as popular group-ride leaders.

But that’s not all they have in common. This summer, they both had their hearts set on racing the BC Enduro series. Enduro racing is a style where only the descents are timed — but don’t let that fool you. Competitive racers still need to be physically fit and mentally sharp to tackle the gruelling courses.

Darcy took part in his first mountain bike race in the sixth grade and hasn’t looked back since. In 2014 he participated in a few of the races in the BC Enduro series, and set a goal to complete the entire series as an elite-level racer

for 2015.

“I researched a few training programs online,” he says, “and then trained five days a week from January until June.”

Darcy’s training included days at the gym, as well as two days a week during the dark winter months on his trainer. A stay-at-home dad, Darcy would schedule his indoor workouts around his young son Felix’s naptime.

“Sometimes the training was cut short if Felix didn’t feel like napping,” he says, “but we made it work.”

Darcy’s goal was to be on the elite podium for at least one race of the series, and he met his goal early in the season with a third-place finish at Kimberley, B.C. “I was really happy with that result,” he says.

“It felt good to know that the hard work was paying off.”

While making the podium was a highlight, Darcy says the entire season was a good one.

“To ride really well and consistently every weekend was great.”

Another highlight for Darcy was having his family — wife Kristy Penner and three-year-old son Felix — come and cheer him on for almost every race.

“The race schedule gave us a bit of a road map for the summer,” says Darcy. “But the nice thing about the races is that they were all in really fun spots to visit.”

The six-part series included races at Kimberley, Canmore, Fernie, Kananaskis, Rossland and Retallack Lodge near New Denver.

In addition to the BC Enduro series, Darcy took part in the local Rumhead Enduro. Not only was Darcy integral in founding this growing race, but he took top honours on the podium this year as well.

And if his season wasn’t good enough already, Darcy recently learned he had been accepted to race in New Zealand this winter in a seven-day race called the Trans New Zealand. “I found out earlier this month, and I’m pretty excited,” he says. “I’m still out riding here as much as possible.”

If reading about Darcy’s success and work ethic has inspired you, you’re not the only one.

“I would love to just be able to stay on Darcy’s wheel,” says Karey Watanabe. “I am incredibly happy for him and proud of his race season this year.”

Karey’s no slouch in the racing department, either. A former professional downhill racer, she retired from the pro scene eight years ago but has remained active on the mountain bike circuit through her Sweet Riders clinics. After living and racing in Japan for several years, she recently moved back to Crowsnest Pass.

“I definitely didn’t have any real training under my belt, but I was really attracted to the Enduro style of racing,” she says. “I guess racing is just in my blood.”

Karey felt a little bit worried as the race season approached, but decided to take each race in stride. In Kimberley, she’d hoped for a top-10 finish, and was happily surprised with seventh place. In Canmore, she rounded out in the top five but the gruelling race courses were taking their toll.

“I was starting to feel pretty fatigued,” admits

Karey Watanabe is known in Crowsnest Pass as the dynamic program director for the Boys and Girls Club, but she also has some serious mountain biking skills. Karey enjoyed a successful summer of racing, which all stemmed from a last-minute decision to take a chance. According to friend and fellow racer Darcy Neniska, “Karey kind of stumbled into the race season and then just did incredibly well.”

Karey, who was also struggling to balance her race schedule with a busy summer as program director with the Boys and Girls Club. “I made the decision to opt out of the Fernie race, knowing that it would affect my ranking, because I wanted to race strong in the Rumhead Enduro on home soil.”

Karey’s decision paid off and she took home the gold from the Rumhead Enduro. “It was just awesome,” she says of winning the local race. “It was a great feeling.”

Her streak continued with another top-five placing in Kananaskis, and another visit to the podium with a third-place finish in Rossland.

“I was just feeling so strong and excited for the final race, Retallack, when I realized it conflicted with a trip I needed to make back to Japan,” she says. “I was heartbroken.”

But Karey’s race season wasn’t over yet.

Instead, she was given the opportunity to race at Crankworx in Whistler, which is part of the Enduro World Series. The opportunity came

RACERS, continued from page 3 purely by chance; a friend and fellow racer was injured and offered her registration to Karey.

“It’s the biggest of the big,” she says, admitting she was intimidated by the legendary race.

“I held off accepting, initially.”

Eventually, Karey was encouraged to race by friends who reminded her that it was a once-ina-lifetime opportunity. She made her decision with little time to spare, and made it to Whistler by the skin of her teeth.

Pre-riding the course did not to ease Karey’s nerves. “I was pretty scared. The trails were all double black diamond.”

She drew on her background as a seasoned racer to try to regain her mental focus. “I knew I could do it, but this was pushing it.”

To make matters worse, the weather didn’t seem keen on co-operating. “It poured all night,” she recalls. “When race morning rolled around, everything was just so slippery.”

Karey made it through the first stage of the race unscathed, but says she rode fairly conservatively. By the time the next stage rolled around, the wind had picked up and Karey had to brave the cold in addition to all the technical elements waiting for her out on the trail.

“There was a 20-minute section of pure

downhill that was pretty intense,” she says.

“Within seven minutes, my arm went numb.”

On the next section, she dug deep and forced herself forward, trying not to succumb to the emotional roller coaster that was threatening to overtake her.

“I stopped. I cried. I pushed my bike. I argued with myself.”

By the end of the stage, Karey had resolved to quit. But a tiny voice in her head reminded her of how much she’d enjoyed riding the final stage during the pre-ride, and she knew she had to go for it.

“I did it, and I didn’t crash. And I’m just so proud that I finished,” she says. “In the end, it was the best experience, but not my best race, unfortunately.”

When Karey returned home, she was greeted with open arms by the kids at the Boys and Girls Club, who were excited to hear all about her big race. “It was the best feeling,” she says. “And I knew that I made the right decision to do the race.”

Karey, who is sponsored by Specialized Alberta, says she plans on tackling a few races next summer. “It’s a nice outlet, and it clears the mind.”

“Besides,” she adds with a smile, “once a racer, always a racer.”

The local CIBC raised money through a bake sale and book sale, selling books for 25 cents apiece. The branch raised at least $135, and six members made the run in Lethbridge last Sunday.

My Little Corner You’ll find something special in the pages of Shootin’ the Breeze this week — our first effort at a supplement for Fire Prevention Week.

This was a late decision, and each of my staff deserves a huge pat on the back for what they put together in three days. Thank you to the businesses who supported the special and to the fire departments who did their best to help out on short notice.

We received a package of great information from the Alberta Office of the Fire Commissioner and Atco. Please check our website and Facebook page this week as we share more information about the importance of smoke alarms and general fire safety.

On behalf of everyone in our office, I extend warm thanks to the women and men who protect our communities. They are willing to put their lives on the line for us, and we are grateful.

This issue also includes Brad’s interviews with the six candidates vying for our votes on election day. As in the past, we are happy to give the contenders an opportunity to share their views, with only two rules: no mudslinging and no negativity.

Five of the six will be present Thursday evening at an all-candidates forum at Pincher Creek’s Heritage Inn. With so much political turbulence, it should be a good chance to hear what the contenders have to

Teen reels in big fish Austin Pool of Crowsnest Pass placed first in the youth category at the Salmon Conservation Association Derby last month in Port Renfrew, B.C. It was his first time fishing offshore, and he trained with Arnold Morris. His winning fish weighed 14 pounds six ounces. Amelia hopes her studies and successes will lead her down a career path that allows her to have a positive effect on people and how they live their lives. But for now, she says her ambitions are not as lofty as one might think, given her recent accolades.

“It might be too much to ask,” she says, “but at the moment I’m focusing on a different goal: surviving second year.”

Something tells us she’ll be just fine.

Six candidates on federal ballot for Foothills riding

By Brad Quarin It’s been a long campaign. Very long. However, it will end soon with election day on Oct. 19, as voters across the country will go to the ballot box and make their voices heard.

This election will see the face of the electoral map changed considerably. Our riding was formerly Macleod, but Crowsnest Pass, Pincher Creek, Waterton, the Piikani Nation and area are now part of the new riding of Foothills.

The area last voted on the federal level in a byelection in June 2014, with a dismal 20 per cent voter turnout.

We’ll want to do much better this time, but first we will need to know the candidates.

There are six candidates in our riding, and I was able to chat with each of them. Voters can also check out the debate hosted by the Pincher Creek Chamber of Commerce at the Heritage Inn on Thursday, starting at 6:30 p.m.

So let’s get out and vote, and show the country we do want to stand up and be heard.

Conservative candidate has “unfinished business”

The race in Foothills has Conservative Party of Canada candidate John Barlow seeking to keep his seat in Parliament.

Mr. Barlow was first elected the MP for Macleod in

the byelection in June 2014.

He says he is running again because he has “a lot of unfinished business” to pursue. He also notes that the area is his home and he loves the communities of Foothills. He grew up in High River and lives in Okotoks.

The issues that concern him relate primarily to infrastructure, John Barlow such as bringing high-speed Internet to all communities. Some houses and small businesses don’t have access to it, he says.

This also promotes tourism, as small businesses can market themselves online. He emphasizes the importance of building jobs in tourism and agriculture.

Mr. Barlow sees “amazing potential” in Foothills and hopes to nurture economic growth.

So far, one of his proudest moments in politics was announcing the rebuilding of Crestview Lodge in Pincher Creek, during which some tears of joy were shed by seniors.

But it’s also been the smaller moments in helping constituents with tax or immigration problems that stand out for him.

While it’s impossible to knock on every door in the riding, he has found the response of voters to be positive.

She believes her roots in science will also help with understanding water issues in Foothills. Pipelines could be built that would carry water to populations that need it with a minimum of vaporation and seepage, she says.

In choosing to run under the Liberal banner, she says she wants to see an open and transparent government that gives the people a voice. She notes Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau has been to Foothills three times in the last year, and she considers him a listener who wants to learn from local people.

Mrs. MacPherson is trying to speak with and listen to the public as well, though there doesn’t seem to be enough hours in the day to knock on every door.

So far, she has visited Pincher Creek and Beaver Mines, and while she covered several streets, she found herself unable to do all of them. Travel time in the riding is also immense.

This is the fourth time running for Marc Slingerland, who has previously stood for election in Lethbridge and Macleod.

Mr. Slingerland says he stands for “real” conservative and family values. While the party espouses policies based in Judeo-Christian beliefs, he believes its candidates Marc Slingerland can speak fairly for everyone if elected, and says it is not simply the “Christian party.” He feels Canada was founded on Judeo-Christian values such as self-sacrifice.

He also says it is not the federal government’s place to dictate how Foothills is governed. He envisions a national government that would concentrate on matters such as military defence while local policies are determined by local people.

With a background as a teacher and principal, Mr. Slingerland says he has learned how to understand information quickly, explain himself and understand others. His proudest achievement in his work is seeing the accomplishments of each graduating class.

He is still working full time, which limits time on the campaign trail. He has visited many communities in the southern portion of the riding, but travel in such a large geographical area has been difficult.

NDP candidate wants “a Foothills for all”

The Foothills candidate for the New Democratic Party began her career at the Shell Waterton Complex while living in Pincher Creek.

Although Alison Thompson currently lives in southwest Calgary, life in Pincher Creek shaped her view of the riding.

“This is what rural Alberta is like,” she says. She describes the years she spent in our area as “formative” in her own life, as she spent her 20s here.

Twenty years of work in the energy industry has Alison Thompson also shaped her views on the importance of economic diversification.

“That’s driven me to stand up and speak out,” she says.

Ms. Thompson believes it is the lack of job diversification that has put Alberta in recession, but sees a lot of potential in Foothills, as it has a lot of windy, sunny and agricultural areas.

Through her career, she has developed an interest in geothermal energy.

One natural resource she wants to promote in Foothills is tourism. In her career, she has developed hot springs in places that do not naturally have them, which draw visitors. She imagines developing hot springs in the Pincher Creek and Crowsnest Pass area would complement Waterton Lakes National Park and the newly announced Castle provincial park.

Small businesses are another resource she hopes to develop, and she notes the NDP has proposed to lower small-business taxes.

While some candidates may see an especially long campaign as a challenge, Ms. Thompson sees it as an opportunity. There are many communities in Foothills to visit and many people to meet, and she says she has time to do it and time to spread her message of change.

Green candidate steps up for change

Voters looking to paint the town green may be interested in Romy S. Tittel, who is running in Foothills for the Green Party of Canada.

Ms. Tittel is a businesswoman who has worked in Alberta for 27 years, and has seen and endured numerous ups and downs in the economy.

Looking for stability through a diversified economy, she decided to run for Parliament to help make it happen.

“I need to step up and be the person to possibly Romy S. Tittel make the change,” she says.

With a background in electronics and software, Ms. Tittel believes her business taught her how to work with what you have and take on many responsibilities. Since her business is international, she has to keep up with what’s happening in the world.

Ms. Tittel believes that everyone has to do well, or no one does. She envisions a less fragmented society. “We all have to be in this together,” she says.

It hasn’t been an easy campaign, as she finds many people feel detached from the system and don’t want to talk about politics. She regards this as unfortunate because politics should reflect all of us. However, she has also met people who are optimistic about what the election might bring.

Message from the acting fire commissioner Whenever we hear that fire truck siren, we panic for a moment, hoping our fellow Albertans are safe. It’s a sound we’d rather not hear. The sound of a smoke alarm, on the other hand, is one we can live with.

Research shows us that a properly installed and working smoke alarm can cut the chances of dying in a fire in half. Yet we know that too many homes in Alberta do not have this life-saving device — and in too many homes, they have been disabled.

Research on home fires show that in as little as three minutes, a fire can become deadly to the occupants due to toxic smoke from burning synthetic materials present in drapes, carpeting and furniture.

A well-trained and well-equipped urban fire service will reach a burning home in seven minutes or more after a call is received. This is too late to save occupants who may already be overcome by toxic smoke. All Albertans need to prevent fires in our homes and ensure safe evacuation. A key part of this evacuation process is early detection of a fire by a smoke alarm.

Fire Prevention Week reminds all Albertans about the tragedies and loss fires can cause. More importantly, it reminds Albertans about the ways they can prevent fires and protect themselves and their families.

Small crews make a big difference

By Brad Quarin Naturally, fire knows no boundaries and is not limited to the larger centres of Crowsnest Pass and the town of Pincher Creek. Smaller communities in the Pincher Creek area, as well as the Piikani Nation, need fire service too.

In some cases, this is provided by small but dedicated volunteer brigades and fire departments that also deserve recognition during Fire Prevention Week.

The village of Cowley is served by the Cowley Volunteer Fire Department, which consists of eight volunteers who all live in the village.

Given the small size of the group, everyone has to do several jobs, says firefighter and secretary Jannet Findlater.

Cowley firefighters face some hurdles, sometimes finding they lack a large enough crew. Because it’s all volunteer work, the members of the department all have regular jobs.

However, the department and Pincher Creek Emergency Services have a good working relationship, and sometimes Pincher Creek firefighters will reinforce Cowley, Jannet says.

She believes the Cowley Volunteer Fire Department has made a difference, seeing how thankful residents can be that the firefighters are there to help.

In an emergency, residents who aren’t firefighters often pitch in by making coffee or bringing water to the firehall, Jannet says.

For Fire Prevention Week, anyone can stop by the Cowley firehall for hotdogs and children’s games on Thursday at 6:30 p.m.

Anyone interested in joining the department can also inquire there or at the firehall meetings held at 7 p.m. every second Monday.

In Lundbreck, a brigade of eight is on guard, says captain Anne Molnar. It’s a small and tightknit group that she says resembles a family, and members often do things together outside of the brigade.

There are challenges in going into rural areas, as Lundbreck firefighters sometimes get wrong addresses and have to find places.

Still, Anne says they have been there for people in tough times, and residents have been glad to see friendly faces in times of crisis. There aren’t many fires in the Lundbreck area, but Anne says the brigade has saved a couple of houses.

Pincher Creek EMS. The hamlet of Beaver Mines relies on its own brigade, made up of five people, says Lt. Steve Oczkowski.

The brigade is always seeking new members, and anyone interested can drop by the Pincher Creek firehall or show up at the Beaver Mines firehall during its meetings.

The brigade meets at 7 p.m. on every second Tuesday, currently working out of a garage. The brigade is trying to secure a new firehall, with the Municipal District of Pincher Creek having bought land for a new building.

Despite the small size of the brigade, Steve says they have made a difference as first responders to the whole area west of Beauvais Lake. Grass fires are common in this region.

The brigade also dealt with the fire in Pincher Creek’s Foothills Trailer Park, which Steve says could have been much worse than it turned out.

Finally, Brocket is served by the Piikani Volunteer Fire Department, a larger crew of 21 people, all volunteers.

For Fire Prevention Week, members of the department are visiting local schools to share information with students.

Getting the word out about fire prevention

By Erin Fairhurst It’s Fire Prevention Week and all four firehalls in Crowsnest Pass are opening their doors to get the word out and start some discussion about the importance of prevention.

“If we increase fire prevention, then we decrease safety risks,” says Steve Debienne, fire chief and manager of protective services.

Fire Prevention Week runs Oct. 4 to 10, and this year Crowsnest Pass firefighters are visiting both Horace Allen School and Isabelle Sellon School to discuss the importance of fire prevention through the theme Hear the Beep Where You Sleep.

“We’ll be talking about smoke alarms, what to do when you hear one, and why they’re important,” says Steve. And just in case that’s not exciting enough, “Sparky the mascot will be there too.”

In addition to sparking discussion about fire prevention and smoke alarms, Steve hopes Fire Prevention Week will help promote openness and communication with the public in terms of our protective services.

“It’s just a great opportunity to talk about ideas and initiatives, whether it’s with the kids at school or at an open house at the firehall.”

Fire Prevention Week is also a great time to learn about what your community firefighters do — and how to get involved. “We are actively recruiting men and women of any age,” Steve says, “and we’ll be providing some fairly big training opportunities.”

Smoke alarms for the hard of hearing Smoke alarms save lives. However, people who are deaf or hard of hearing may not be able to depend on the traditional smoke alarm to alert them to a fire.

Smoke alarms and alert devices, called accessories, are available for people who are deaf and hard of hearing. There are a few types of accessories you may consider, depending on your needs.

Strobe lights throughout the home are activated by smoke detectors and alert people who are deaf to fire conditions. When people who are deaf are asleep, a high-intensity strobe light is required, along with a pillow or bed shaker to wake them up and alert them to fire conditions so they can escape. These accessories produce a loud, mixed low-pitch sound. They are activated by the sound of the smoke alarm and are usually installed next to the bed.

Recent research has shown that a loud, mixed low-pitch sound is more effective in waking people of all ages than the loud high-pitch sound of a traditional smoke alarm. As people age, their ability to hear high-pitch sounds decreases.

Smoke alarms with built-in or separate strobe lights can be purchased through home improvement stores and websites, or by searching the Internet for “strobe light smoke alarms.” BRK/First Alert, Gentex and Kidde are brands of this type of smoke alarm.

Baptism by fire

By Erin Fairhurst There’s a new chief in town.

Steve Debienne has only been at the helm as fire chief and manager of protective services in Crowsnest Pass for just over a month, but he already knows one thing for certain: “The firefighters here are second to none,” he says. “They’ve been through a lot of change and transition and they are absolutely fantastic.”

At 33, the Saskatchewan native says he has “seen a lot and jammed a lot” into his life so far. He has worked as a mechanic, as a sports trainer and in the oilsands — but above all, his passion is working in emergency services.

“This is such a rewarding career,” he says. “It’s just a great occupation.”

Steve acknowledges that the job comes with its challenges, and that it’s not for everyone. “People either love it or they hate it,” he says. “There’s no happy medium. It’s a job that challenges you mentally, emotionally and physically.”

But it also comes with some long-lasting rewards.

“Fire service is a family,” Steve says. In fact, just this summer Steve returned to his former stomping grounds in La Ronge, Sask., to help out as a volunteer firefighter.

“I was welcomed back with open arms, and it was important for me to go.”

He is currently studying for a master’s degree in business administration through Athabasca University, and is turning his analytical approach to the management of emergency services in Crowsnest Pass.

“Every chief has a different background, history and ideas,” says Steve, who has worked as either a full-time deputy or chief since 2005. “My goal is to build a road map, and to set some achievable and obtainable goals. We need to embrace every small success and focus on moving forward.”

With four firehalls and over 50 firefighters, he says his job is challenging, and likens the experience to rowing a boat.

“If we want to move forward, we all need to work together. If people are rowing the boat in different directions, then we aren’t going to get anywhere.”

For now, as he rolls up his sleeves to deal with his new responsibilities, Steve is spending a lot of time at the firehall — “24-7,” he says, only half joking. “People come in here at all hours, on any day, and I’m always here.”

But on the bright side, that means that if any members of the public want to pop in to meet Steve, he’ll likely be there. “We absolutely have an opendoor policy here,” he says.

When he’s not at the hall, Steve enjoys being outside and spending time with his dog — a Dalmatian, of course.

Myth: Pets can sense danger and usually escape a fire Reality: Household pets are very vulnerable to fires. Smoke can damage the lungs of a dog or cat in minutes, and sparks can cause painful burns that can remain undetected under the fur.

Myth: Fire spreads slowly and takes a long time to get out of control Reality: A small flame can turn into a major fire in less than 30 seconds, and it can take as few as three to five minutes for an entire house to fill with dense, dark smoke and become engulfed in flames.

spatter grease or overheat, creating a fire that can quickly spread. Cooking fires are the number one cause of home fires and home fire injuries.

Myth: Most children know not to play with matches Reality: Children are naturally curious, and this can be dangerous. Hundreds of children die or are seriously injured in fires each year in North America. Children are much more likely to be injured in a fire than adults.

Myth: Kids will instinctively run from fire and escape a burning home Reality: When children see smoke or fire, they often try to hide instead of flee. Smoke can overcome a child very quickly. Parents need to teach children fire safety and escape plans, and practise with them regularly. As well, test the smoke alarm with your children present so they can recognize the sound, as studies show this can help them wake up in a real emergency.

Junior firefighter serves his community

By Brad Quarin Keynan Fraser may not be the typical firefighter one expects to respond to emergencies.

He is only 17 and is in Grade 12 at Crowsnest Consolidated High School. But the responsible young man is a member of the junior program at the Bellevue station of Crowsnest Pass Fire/Rescue and is at the service of his community.

It all began with the Lost Creek Fire of 2003. “My grandma’s house was in Hillcrest, and she was worried about her house burning down,” he says. “I told her that I was going to save her house.”

He was just a young child at the time, but his interest was real. Keynan’s dad was in the fire department, so Keynan was also taking after him.

Currently, Trent Fraser is captain of the Bellevue station.

On Keynan’s 16th birthday, in February 2014, he got an interview for the fire service junior program and passed his physical test.

The junior program is for ages 16 to 18, and has some limitations.

A junior firefighter can’t respond to calls during school hours, but after school or during the summer, calls can come at any time.

Keynan keeps his pager on all night, and if it goes off in the middle of the night he will turn on his radio and respond.

Still, he doesn’t find it too much of a burden on his free time, and he has established a nice balance between his personal life and volunteer service.

One fire Keynan helped fight was at the Bellevue Inn last January.

“I was on the outside attack on the initial truck,” he says, meaning he sprayed the fire from outside and was on the first truck to arrive on the scene. Junior firefighters are not allowed to go into burning buildings.

Deadly fumes are an inherent risk in such a job. Still, he takes on the danger as a way to give back to a community that he feels has been good to him.

KEYNAN, continued from page 21 The hardest part of fire service may be shedding “the emotional attachments,” which can be “draining.” For example, tending to a rescue involving a family could remind him of his own.

However, he likes fighting fires and having information on fires before everyone else. During the Bellevue Inn fire, he was proud of spraying the flames while his dad was inside the building.

He enjoys the camaraderie in the fire department. With few calls in Crowsnest Pass, a typical week in the volunteer service involves practice from 6:30 to 9 p.m. every Wednesday.

After high school, Keynan is interested in studying engineering at university, and intends to continue volunteering with a fire department.

He isn’t interested in pursuing the fire service as a full-time career, enjoying more variety in volunteer work.

For Fire Prevention Week, the tip Keynan wishes to share with readers is to always be prepared.

“Everyone thinks that ‘It can happen to them, it can’t happen to me,’ ” he says. “A fire can happen to anyone.”

That’s why it’s important to have a spot where a family can meet in case of fire, make sure smoke detectors are working and fire extinguishers are full.

Smoke alarms are your best chance of being alerted to a house fire early enough to escape.

6. True. You should test your smoke alarms monthly. This is the only way to make sure they are in working condition. Only working smoke alarms can protect your family from fire. If you have battery-operated alarms, replace batteries according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Usually the battery will last about one year before needing replacement.

Exercise class promotes healthy lifestyle and positive energy

By Brad Quarin Adults looking for a positive and non-competitive atmosphere for exercise should take interest in a free class where participants encourage each other.

“Interaction is so important,” says instructor Angel King. “I’ve seen people come to the class and they’re quite shy and reserved, and then, as they continue to come, they’re more active.”

The Exercise for LIFE program is running now, with classes every Monday and Wednesday from 10 to 11 a.m. Participants learn from Janet Joy and Angel at M.D. McEachern Community Centre in Bellevue.

The program was originally called Older Adult Fitness, but drew a variety of age groups and became more inclusive after a Thrive on Wellness grant. Exercise for LIFE serves all adults, with some participants in their 30s and some in their 90s.

The idea of Exercise for LIFE — and its acronym — is to encourage a healthy lifestyle, interaction and fitness for energy.

With people of different ages and abilities, the intensity of Exercise for LIFE will vary by individual.

“When a participant comes through the door, we really want them to be selfish about themselves … [and] listen to their own bodies,” Angel says. Your body can tell you what you can and can’t do, and everyone is encouraged to also see a doctor to help determine personal limits.

Some participants may be able to do jumping jacks while others may be more comfortable with chair exercises, keeping arms and feet moving. Chair exercises are available to anyone who needs them, and can be surprisingly exhausting.

It can be challenging to co-ordinate a class where everyone is working at a different inten-

sity level, but Angel says she and Janet work hard to do it.

And it is worth it. “One of the most rewarding aspects of this class and instructing is hearing of the very positive results people are having in many areas,” Janet says. These include greater health, bone density, lung capacity, energy and mobility.

The program roughly coincides with the school year, so it will run until the end of June.

While this year’s program started early in September, it’s never too late to jump in.

Anyone interested in joining can simply show up, though newcomers should arrive 10 or 15 minutes early to register and meet the instructors.

Participants should wear comfortable clothing and are encouraged to attend on both Monday and Wednesday.

John Gabriel Gaydos 1934 - 2015

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of John Gabriel Gaydos of Crowsnest Pass, who succumbed to illness at the Crowsnest Pass Health Centre on Sept. 30, 2015, at the age of 81.

John was born in Bellevue on Aug. 18, 1934, to proud parents Ethel and Carl Gaydos. He grew up amongst the beauty of the Crowsnest Pass and appreciating all that the area has to offer.

As a young man, he met the love of his life, Rosanna Giacchetta. The happy couple were joined in holy matrimony on April 4, 1959, and went on to be blessed with four wonderful sons.

John enjoyed fishing, puttering around his yard and shop, and attending accordion festivals, but most of all, he cherished time shared with his family. He was a kind, loving gentleman who will be dearly missed by all who knew him.

Left to mourn his passing and celebrate his life are his wife, Rosanna Gaydos (née Giacchetta) of Blairmore; his children Tim (Lisa Jones) Gaydos, Colin (Szejn) Gaydos and Jonathan Gaydos; his four-legged grand-puppies, Jazz and Cooper; his brother-in-law, Tony (Ginette) Giachetta; as well as his extended family and the many friends he made throughout his lifetime.

He was predeceased by his parents, Ethel and Carl Gaydos; his stepfather, Leslie Tisoski; and his son Christopher Gaydos.

The funeral mass was held at Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Church in Blairmore on Oct. 3, 2015, with Father Ben Marino as celebrant. Interment followed at the Bellevue Catholic cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of John Gaydos will be gratefully accepted by the Canadian Diabetes Association. Condolences may be registered at www.fantinsfuneralchapel.ca.

Youth see the world with Rotary Club

By Brad Quarin Aspiring young globetrotters have a chance to discover another culture, learn a new language and grow with the Rotary Club youth exchange.

The Pincher Creek Rotary Club is currently accepting applications from local youth between 15 and 19 for next year’s exchange.

“Every student that we have sent, we’ve seen amazing change and growth in them when they come back,” says Carole Goodreau, outbound counsellor for Rotary exchange students. “They may have been a little bit shy or not sure what they wanted to do once they finish school. They come back and they’re able to to stand up in front of the club and present, and they’re comfortable.”

She recommends the program to “kids that are interested in travelling to other countries, wanting to be cultural ambassadors [and] wanting to pick up language skills.” It’s pretty incredible to see a lot of the world at a young age.

While many of the students the Pincher Creek Rotary Club has sent to other countries have family in the club, this isn’t a requirement, Carole says.

A teen simply has to speak with a Rotary Club member, such as herself or Scott Korbett.

The club is interested in above-average students who have shown that they have leadership skills.

Teens typically come from Matthew Halton High School or St. Michael’s School, but it’s possible the club may consider a student from Livingstone School.

The local club will examine the application form and interview the student, and if they approve, the student will be sent to another interview and screening, Carole says.

Students have a little say as to what country they will go to, selecting two or three they find particularly interesting. They may travel to a European country such as Norway or Italy, or to Mexico or Brazil. Generally, the club will not send a student to an English-speaking country, she says.

After reaching their destination, students attend school and typically stay with two or three host families during the year.

The deadline to apply for the program is Nov. 15, with students leaving next August. Prices vary, with parents and students covering airfare, travel insurance and spending cash. The local Rotary Club assists with expenses, bringing youth one step closer to the adventure of a lifetime.
