Little pop can tabs can make a big difference

By Brad Quarin Little things can mean a lot.

A pop can tab looks like a little thing, used to open soda or any canned beverage and seemingly having no further significance. But three little girls are doing great things with them.

Nevaeh MacKinnon, 8, and her sister Adessa, 5, have been busy collecting tabs in Cowley for four years, while Claira Murray, 8, is starting a new campaign in Crowsnest Pass.

Money raised from recycling a mass of tabs can pay for many good things.

“We collect because every year we do it to ... build wheelchairs,” Nevaeh says.

It began when she was in kindergarten and the class started collecting tabs.

Her mom, Amber, had told her that this could be done to build wheelchairs, and she had also collected them as a girl.

The two sisters are now collecting together, and Adessa enjoys putting the coloured tabs together to make pictures. “We like building pop can things,” she says. “We both like doing each other’s things and we both like helping each other.”

“And we drink a lot of pop and stuff,” Nevaeh adds. It’s for a good cause, as she knows it will help people who need wheelchairs. Her grandma used one and Nevaeh has seen other relatives use them in hospitals.

They also gave 67,000 tabs, weighing 42 pounds, to the Pincher Creek Elks, says past president Ken Neumann. The Elks collect tabs to pay for numerous things such as a child’s wheelchair and a warming blanket at the Pincher Creek Health Centre.

Recently, Ken delivered a cheque to rural site manager Jordan Koch for portable ultrasound equipment. The $699 was raised through collecting soda and beer can tabs, including Adessa and Nevaeh’s.

The new ultrasound equipment can be used to check the heartbeat of a fetus, Jordan says.

Nevaeh has no idea how many tabs they’ve collected, but it’s a lot. “I find them in my laundry, I find them on my floors,” Amber says.

One may wonder where the girls get so many. Nevaeh recalls searching through recycling bags for a long time once.

“We find them on the road, we find them everywhere, and we also find them on the street,” Adessa says.

Many people, mainly friends of the family, give the girls tabs. A distant cousin from Calgary gave them 11 pounds, Amber says.

In Crowsnest Pass, Claira Murray began collecting tabs to pick up the mantle of her friend Brynn, who collected them before passing away of cancer at 14.

The tabs go to Ronald McDonald House to fund its programs and to help buy wheelchairs for children in poorer countries, Claira and mom Tracy explain.

Claira thought it would be fun to help other children like her, Tracy says.

Claira has had a wheelchair for a year, which she uses sometimes to conserve energy. Having cerebral palsy, she uses five times more energy than most people, and becomes tired fast.

The Murrays are putting jars out in public places in the Pass for anyone to place tabs into. So far, they know jars will be available at Paws 2 Claws Pet Salon, Allied Tru Hardware and Stone’s Throw Cafe.

Claira has already put together a bucket containing thousands of tabs, which took a while, with help from her aunt and grandma.

The Murrays hope Pop Can Tabs for Claira jars will bring in as many tabs as possible. Claira thanks the many people who have already said they will help.

My Little Corner A printing project I worked on last week unexpectedly led to an impromptu speech at the Awards of Excellence dinner in Pincher Creek.

In creating the evening’s program booklet, it was simplest to start with the 2014 copy and make changes. The first were to the list of directors. There were six names to be deleted with only one, a youth representative, to be added. When I reached the sponsorship page the change was as drastic — eight sponsors to be removed with only two new ones coming on board.

I’m using the chamber as an example, but this is a disturbing trend for many service organizations.

Bob Westrop acted as MC for the evening and, in a call for volunteers, used the Gathering (Cowboy Poetry) as an example of an event that has ceased to exist because a small group of volunteers grew weary of carrying the burden on their own.

It’s a reality faced by organizers of events both big and small — the Pincher Creek Pro Rodeo is another in danger of being lost to our community.

My own name was one deleted from this year’s chamber program. Stepping down from two executive positions this fall was a difficult decision.

With my work hours unpredictable at best, I found I was missing more meetings than I could attend.

Rather than letting these organizations down, the best option for me right now is to help as I’m able.

EMERGING ARTISTS, An editorial by Shannon (Robison) Robin I felt regret as I wrote two letters of resignation, but we all do the best we can do.

At the closing of the awards ceremony last week, the best I could do was to convey the vulnerability of the organization and the need for people to step in to help the six board members who are doing the work of many more.

There was no plan, just a microphone in my hand and a captive audience of 150 people. If one person in the room has considered lending a hand, then the oral editorial did its job.

A chamber of commerce has an important role in every community. Times are tough for small businesses, and there’s no better time to share ideas and resources and to form partnerships.

Any board benefits from the spark of enthusiasm that comes with new members and every offer of help is appreciated.

Imagine having no one to put together the rodeo parade, no one to organize a golf tournament that funds junior entrepreneurship training, no one to co-ordinate a town-wide Christmas promotion, and no one to host an awards ceremony that celebrates the excellence that exists on so many levels in our community.

The Pincher Creek chamber is one of many organizations lacking in volunteer support. One person’s ideas and help can make a difference. Is that person you?

Transit changes coming Crowsnest Pass municipal council and the Family and Community Support Services board are jointly pursuing significant changes to the local bus transportation program (a.k.a. the Town Rounder), effective early in 2016.

Currently, the Town Rounder offers door-to-door transportation service to Crowsnest Community Support Society clients each weekday, as well as three days a week to local seniors and persons with mobility issues. After modest user fees, the net cost of the service has hovered around $7,000 per month, while typically serving 20 to 25 clients per month.

“While the Town Rounder provides an important service in our community, a cost of $280 to $350 per client per month is a subsidy that is not fiscally palatable,” said Mayor Blair Painter.

However, instead of cancelling the service, council and the FCSS board have proposed a plan to trial a public transit service that could enhance the overall benefit to the community. Specifically, the new bus service will be comprised of two distinct services: 1. the typical door-to-door Town Rounder service will be offered two days per week; and 2. the transit system will operate three days per week.

“The hope is to help citizens get access to community facilities, parks and services where transportation is difficult or impossible,” explained Mayor Painter. “In addition, this trial will explore the community interest and support for transit in general without increasing transit costs to the taxpayer.”

Over the coming weeks, the municipality will seek feedback and input on the specifics of this change. For more information, please contact Lyle Hannan, director of community services, at 403-563-4142.

Christian congregation worships in new location With gratefulness to God, we wish to announce that the Christian congregation formerly meeting in Bellevue under the name of Kingdom First is now meeting at the Hillcrest Fish and Game Hall in Hillcrest under the new name of Faith Alive.

After our one pastoral couple moved to Lethbridge and they and our other pastoral couple announced that they had decided to shut down the church, the six appointed church leaders on the advisory board wanted to have the church continue and decided to follow the suggestion of their former pastors to form a new church under a new name.

We three couples of the former advisory board are grateful for the time we were able to worship in Bellevue, the prayers of our former leaders, and the financial contribution we received to help us get established. We’re also very grateful for the warm reception of the Fish and Game Association executive in making their hall available to us each Sunday.

Faith Alive has been meeting since Aug. 23.

The Sunday services begin at 11 a.m. Our mission is to faithfully proclaim Jesus Christ as Saviour and Lord to those with whom we come in contact, to be a Christian family to them, to model Christ’s love to all by being a blessing to our community, region, and the world. We affirm that Jesus is our head, that we are family, that everyone is loved and accepted and everyone’s gifts are valued. We also affirm the ministry gifts of women and the priesthood of all believers.

Our heart’s desire is to bless others, especially in our community, because we have been blessed.

One of the first ways we have done this is to purchase towel sets to be distributed by the women’s resource centre and food bank for those in need.

Community groups scare up fun for Halloween this weekend

By Brad Quarin Halloween falls on Saturday this year, which should give trick-or-treaters some extra time to score candy, and adults a few extra hours to party.

Frightful delights will be dished out by numerous groups and businesses in the area, with fun activities for young and old alike.

There’s no better way to get into the spirit of All Hallows’ Eve than by carving a jack-o’-lantern. St. Michael’s School in Pincher Creek is holding a family pumpkin-carving night on Thursday, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.

Attendees can take their own pumpkins to Foothills Church, beside Vista Village, and can carve with tools provided by the school. There will also be Halloween-themed tales and crafts for the children.

On Friday, youngsters can discover their inner mad scientist with the Halloween Howl at Pincher Creek and District Municipal Library.

“All our activities are geared towards safe discovery-based fun, for all ages,” says Sahra Nodge, community outreach co-ordinator.

There will be different stations for scientific exploration, some sporting microscopes and magnifiers and a chemistry lab.

The Halloween Howl runs from 2 to 5 p.m., and children can dress up for it. The event is free.

Afterwards, youth can walk over to the Pincher Creek swimming pool for a Halloween pool party, from 5 to 7 p.m. There will be games, prizes, costume judging and a haunted room, for regular admission. Body paint is not allowed.

At 6 p.m., Peigan Community Hall will open for a masquerade dance, an event for drug and alcohol abuse awareness. Organizer Marlon Strikes With a Gun says this year is “dedicated to the newcomer.” It can be frightening to enter a room to seek help, and organizers want everyone to feel secure.

There will be be numerous contests, a DJ, pumpkin carving and more, open not just to residents of the Piikani Nation but to people in Lethbridge, the Blood Reserve and beyond. As Marlon notes, drugs and alcohol are a nationwide issue.

This is the third time the event will be held, and it keeps getting bigger. Admission is $5 per adult, $2 for ages six to 13 and free for ages five and under.

Saturday will bring the Crowsnest Pass Spooktacular, running from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. It will feature an array of fun activities and trick-or-treating at M.D. McEachern Community Centre for ages two to nine. More details can be found in our Oct. 21 issue.

In Coleman, the Grand Union Hotel will become the Haunted Hotel, open from 6 to 9 p.m. Owner Glory-Jo Galicia says the Haunted Hotel, open to adults and children, will feature new decorations, with a bit more gore.

Visitors can bring non-perishable food items, which will be donated to the Crowsnest Pass and Pincher Creek food banks.

The Grand Union Hotel masquerade that follows will be for adults only, offering music, dancing and costume judging.

At 8 p.m., the Pincher Creek Legion will provide entertainment, dances and drinks, and attendees can dress up for the occasion. The event is free to attend and open to the public, if a guest is signed in by a Legion member.

In Twin Butte, the Cattleman’s Masquerade Ball will begin at the community hall at 8:30 p.m. The event will feature music, dancing and the third annual rib cook-off.

Everyone can sample the ribs, taking votes on a winner who will get bragging rights, says Jeny Akitt, director of the Twin Butte Community Society.

The ball always has a great turnout, usually drawing between 100 and 150 people.

Anyone experiencing Halloween withdrawal on Sunday can return to the Haunted Hotel in Coleman, open again from 6 to 9 p.m.

The annual send-off of the community’s jack-o’lanterns will also take place at Flumerfelt Park, as Pumpkins in the Park is held by the Coleman Community Society for a 16th year.

Crowsnest Pass residents can have their jack-o’lanterns displayed one last time from 7 to 9 p.m., enjoy some free hot chocolate and are welcome to make a donation to the food bank.

To get your pumpkin in the show, drop it off on Sunday by 3 p.m. at one of several locations: the Bellevue or Hillcrest post offices, Morency Plumbing or the Nippon Institute in Blairmore, or Reimer Construction or Flumerfelt Park in Coleman.

Finally on Monday, trick-or-treaters with surplus candy can avoid aching stomachs and teeth by dropping off their unwanted sweets at Crowsnest Dental. The Halloween Candy Buy Back runs from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Crowsnest Dental will pay $1 per pound.

“We’re happy to have it once more,” says office manager Cheryl Oczkowski.

The candy goes to Canadian troops for Christmas.

Trick-or-treaters will also be entered into a draw for a movie goodie basket including four movie passes.

Fundraising was carried out by the Knights of Columbus, and others helped by pulling the font apart, contributing plumbing work and putting granite in. The bishop from Calgary visited the church in mid October and also blessed the Statue of the Sacred Heart, after which the congregation was served brunch.

Fire prevention was tasty

By Brad Quarin To promote Fire Prevention Week, Crowsnest Pass Fire/Rescue held a number of open houses and barbecues. However, one of the more creative ways the department raised awareness was to use the fire truck to deliver orders from Black Rock Pizzeria and Bakery.

In each case where firefighters delivered the pizza, the customer had the option of letting them inspect the house’s fire alarm. If the inspection was carried out, the pizza was free.

Black Rock Pizza owner Erica Warlow says a firefighter approached her with the idea.

She thought it would be a neat way to get people talking about fire prevention, and children would be excited to see the fire truck coming. Many people may not know if their fire alarms are working properly.

The fire truck delivered about three pizzas on each of the five nights, and in each case the alarm was checked, Erica says. It was Black Rock Pizza that donated the pizzas, while the Kanata Inns donated new fire alarms.

A book available in the local library, Last Child in the Woods by Richard Louv, explains how people are depriving themselves of experiencing nature, and the negative emotional and psychological repercussions it is having on them. The term he uses is “nature deficit disorder.”

Optometrists ready for emergencies

By Adam Gorner, OD October is Eye Health month and nobody is better trained and equipped to take care of your vision and eye health needs than your doctor of optometry.

A comprehensive eye exam performed by a doctor of optometry will include examination of the three main facets of the visual system.

First, how clearly do the eyes see and can we improve vision with glasses, contact lenses or sometimes a referral for corrective surgery? Lens technology continues to improve and, as new options become available, your doctor of optometry will tell you what type of lens will best suit your visual needs, whether at home, at work or for hobbies.

Second, do the eyes aim and focus as a team? Each eye may see clearly on its own, but if the two eyes do not work together properly, then headaches, fatigue, eye strain or even double vision may result.

Third, are the eyes healthy? Most eye health problems cause very few, if any, symptoms until the problem is very advanced.

A few types of eye health issues that will cause immediate symptoms are eye injury, infection, or foreign objects in the eye. If you or someone you know is experiencing pain, redness, itching or discharge from the eyes, make an appointment with your doctor of optometry. Most offices will make room to see emergency patients the same day, and many will take after-hours visits as necessary. Your optometrist can prescribe the appropriate medication and/or treatment to help you recover as quickly as possible and to protect one our most precious senses: vision!

All Alberta residents, regardless of age, are covered by provincial health care for medical eye care visits with doctors of optometry.

Diabetes can be seen in the eyes

By Shane Groeneweg, OD I am often asked about what diseases we look for during an eye exam. Diabetes is one of the main ones.

By looking into the eyes, we can actually see the body’s circulatory system functioning in its natural state. There is no other way to observe this. One of the main reasons high blood sugar is bad for us is that it damages the small blood vessels in our bodies.

If we look into the eyes and see leakage from the small blood vessels, or capillaries, not only is there a risk of potential permanent damage to the eyes, but we can assume the same type of damage is happening to capillaries elsewhere in our body: kidneys, fingertips and so on. Our bodies heal through inflammation, inflammation leads to scarring, scarring — of our eyes and kidneys in particular — prevents normal function.

Routine eye exams for people with diabetes are an important tool used to see the early signs of damage and adjust treatments accordingly. In some cases, the initial diagnosis of diabetes can be made after damage is observed during a routine eye exam. The person may have had no knowledge that there could be a problem.

If we see the changes in the eye, we work with family doctors to make sure our patients are receiving the treatment they need.

Brock Patrick Ramias 1995 - 2015

It is with great sorrow that the families of Brock Patrick Ramias, who left the game of life too soon, share his passing on Oct. 19, 2015.

Brock will be remembered with love by his mother, LaVonne, and stepfather, Tony Rideout; his father, Mark Ramias; his brothers, Brett Ferguson (Kara and their daughter Brooklyn) and Troy Ramias; his stepbrothers Ian and Ryan Rideout; as well as his special friend, Ashley Karren.

Also left to mourn are his grandmothers, Carole Ferguson and Mary-Ellen Ramias, and a large extended family of aunts, uncles and cousins. He shared his love with many others and has families and friends that keenly share his loss.

He was predeceased by his grandfather Tom Ferguson.

Brock was born on Feb. 13, 1995, and spent his growing-up years in the Lethbridge area. He graduated from Lethbridge Collegiate Institute in June 2013.

Brock adored his parents and his brothers. He was their greatest fan and protector. His families treasure the many memories of working and playing together on the farm, at the lake and at home. He was fun and full of joy, and a hero to each of them.

Brock was a gentleman who was respected and loved by many, and he returned that love. He was well known within his school and the community as a playful, generous young man. He could be found playing a competitive game of stickball, watching a Cinderella movie, drinking a Slurpee or just having a quiet conversation with a good friend.

Brock loved being with people; he remembered them and made each one of them feel special and cared for, no matter their age or their circumstance in life. He was keenly aware of friends and strangers alike, reaching out to all those he met along the way or found in need.

While he was always athletic and played a number of different sports, it is no secret that Brock loved football. His football family was very important to him and some of his best friendships were forged on the field. He was known for his hard work, competitive drive and sportsmanship. He left everything out on the field every time he played and he was always working to be better.

While Brock worked at a number of jobs, his life’s occupation was football.

He recently returned to LCI as a volunteer coach with the LCI Rams this football season.

Brock leaves behind his great love for each of us, and love enough to spare and share; he would want us all to pass it forward.

A celebration of Brock’s life was held at the Exhibition Grounds, West Pavilion, in Lethbridge on Sunday, Oct. 25, 2015, with Rev. Erin Phillips officiating.

News from Huddlestun Senior Centre

By Joyce McFarland I kid you not, it is only two months until Christmas. The only things we can rely on are a baby’s birthday and a fat man in a red suit, so better check your flu shot, your credit card and your winter tires — now.

The October crib tournament was a great social and financial success at the centre. Ten tables played from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Lunch was served at noon and Shirley, Marina, Rae, Gloria and Marian ran everything without a hitch.

Jack Rumsey and Joe LeBlanc did the heavier cleanup work afterwards. Barbara and Maxine provided muffins for the ongoing coffee break in the morning.

Top prize went to Ken Kitagawa and Irene Duffield, second to Joe and Vernie Bruder, and third was a tie for Betty Gardner with Marian Smith and Audrey Branson with George Fisher. Also, a new couple from Lethbridge

took home day money, and more, winning the 50-50 draw.

The November calendar was firmed up at the October board meeting. There are two changes: snooker will go back to Tuesday mornings and tai chi will be cancelled for a while. Other items are replacement of the pockets in the pool table and formation of an art group for would-be artists who would like to hone their skills with John Hancock and Rae Olds. Contact John or Rae if you are interested.

A full complement of Pincher Planters winterized the flower beds this month. We can never thank them enough for their dedication to all the beauty spots around town. Noreen Robbins sent me a comprehensive report on the Communities in Bloom ceremonies held in Kamloops recently. It is no mean feat for Pincher Creek to be listed with the national winners.

Doreen Michalsky has a wing in a sling but only plans on passing the 500 games on Monday afternoons for one more week. Marion McGarva is nursing a bad back and some guilt about a quilt during her short stay in Lethbridge hospital. Hurry up and get better, you two, we don’t like those empty chairs.

The November calendar is ready now and all the regular programs are in place. There are a few special items: the board meeting at 10 a.m. on Nov. 20 and bingo on Nov. 30 at 1:30 p.m. For seniors wishing to view the Parade of Lights in warmth and comfort, the centre will be open at 6 p.m. on Nov. 20 with hostess Rae Olds.

Did you vote on Oct. 19? On Nov. 11, the Pincher Creek Legion and Canadians everywhere will honour those who protected that right. Be proud of our seniors, some of whom we have loved and lost — don’t sell them short.

Local businesses shine at tourism awards

By Brad Quarin Our local tourism industry certainly shone at the Southwest Service and Tourism Awards. Numerous local businesses and people received a pat on the back from the Chinook Country Tourist Association, which presented the awards for a second year.

The awards are given out to encourage the service and tourism industry to continue making southwest Alberta a wonderful place to visit and live.

The awards cover an area between Okotoks, Milk River and the British Columbia border. The Chinook Country Tourist Association is a non-profit organization based in Lethbridge that promotes tourism.
