Hospital staff are enjoying renovated emergency room

By Brad Quarin Pincher Creek Health Centre’s new emergency room, which celebrated its grand opening nearly a month ago, is receiving positive feedback.

Doctors are adjusting well to the workplace, with no issues, says Jordan Koch, rural site manager at the centre.

Donna Schauerte, chairwoman of the Windy Slopes Health Foundation, says she hears that doctors and nurses are happy with the new space.

She is pleased with the results of the renovations, which give patients more privacy and allow staff to see who is in the waiting room, thanks to an added window.

The centre is grateful to the community and to the health foundation, which made the new ER possible.

“Community support is what makes these extra things happen,” says Donna.

The grand opening was an opportunity for the community to see what its support had wrought.

“It was a very successful grand opening,” Donna says. She estimates between 35 and 40 people attended. Some were past members of the foundation, who received special invitations since the group had wanted a new ER for 10 years.

Jordan was also able to lead three tours of the

ER, for the benefit of about 10 people at a time.

The feedback the public gave was positive.

Jordan says many visitors thought it was attractive in appearance, and could see how it would improve patient flow.

Donna says the foundation received a flood of congratulations over cake and coffee. A ribbon was cut and Teri Myhre, senior operating officer with Alberta Health Services, visited from Lethbridge to speak.

Jordan says Teri gave a great speech about how long the foundation and health centre have been working for the renovations, what is unique about the ER and how it’s often used.

The campaign to raise $650,000 took two years, with help from Shell Canada and the Municipal District of Pincher Creek, which secured funding from the minister of health.

Bob Westrop mentioned all these efforts during the Pincher Creek and District Chamber of Commerce Awards of Excellence in October.

He referred to the ER as “one of the best and most up-to-date in the south region.” The occasion was the bestowing of the Spirit of Pincher Creek Award on the Windy Slopes Health Foundation. Stay tuned for that story.

My Little Corner The Royal Canadian Legion’s poppy campaign began last Friday. Money raised from poppy sales makes a difference for veterans and their families in communities across the nation.

The bright red flowers, worn close to the heart, are a visual reminder of the price of freedom.

We enjoy, and take for granted, much in our everyday lives thanks to the men and women who have put their lives on the line to strive for liberty not only in Canada, but around the world.

The poppy is a representation of courage, strength, leadership and hope. It carries imagery of Flanders Fields and the tremendous loss of life that comes with war.

The simple red felt flower should cause us to pause and reflect before we pin it above our breast.

Whether or not you, a family member, a friend or a neighbour has any direct connection to wartimes of long ago or of current day, worldwide conflict affects each one of us.

Sharing stories and remembrance is important. You may recall the story of Henny DePeuter from last year’s Remembrance Day issue. What she shared with me, as we sat for hours at her kitchen table, brought me to tears many times.

An editorial by Shannon (Robison) Robin She was a child in Holland during the Second World War and every day of her life has been shaped by those experiences.

If we forget or discount these experiences, we are doing a great disservice to every man and woman who has put on a uniform for the sake of our freedom.

As you pin a poppy to your chest this week, please consider sharing a remembrance of your own. These stories are personal, and Shootin’ the Breeze is a safe and personal place to share.

A sign of an early spring?

They found it on a hillside just east of Pincher Creek. Warm autumn weather has left flowers in bloom to enjoy longer than usual, and a warm winter is predicted by Environment Canada.

ISS students investigate Waterton

By Brad Quarin Grade 5 students of Isabelle Sellon School in Blairmore got a close-up and hands-on look at Waterton Lakes National Park while camping there in mid October.

These students had the opportunity to go to the Waterton Ecosystem Investigator Camp, to learn about the ecosystem and how its parts interact.

“It was fun because we got to play lots of games,” says student Logan Davidson. “They taught us about the wildlife.”

When the children arrived at the park, they stayed at the Camp Columbus cabins, where they would spend three days and two nights.

The days consisted of plenty of educational games, picking up tags to act out being predator and prey for one. Logan thinks this game, in which he was a herbivore, was the coolest part of the trip.

One of the students, Darcy Wemp, says he was excited to go on the trip and reports that the students went on two hikes, visiting the grassland foothills and learning what was out there. The area is home to aspen trees and bison.

Student Felicity Miller was surprised to learn that people deliberately start fires in the park to control the spread of aspen trees and help grow long grasses.

While out in the wilderness, the children also kept an eye out for flowers, trees and other plants,

being given cards showing things to find.

They also saw insects and animal tracks, some from deer and some from a big bear. Further into the trip, they discovered a deer skull and bones.

Talking around a campfire about their day, especially about finding the tracks and the bones, was one of Felicity’s favourite parts of the experience.

The trip wasn’t just about games, as at one point the students helped pull the invasive spotted knapweed in the park. Darcy found this particularly interesting.

“We saw how the life cycle works, because the spotted knapweed was killing another plant. The butterfly ... needed to lay its eggs on that specific [plant],” he says.

People are part of the life cycle as well, and on the second-last day the children saw an hour-long presentation about First Nations people.

Members of the Piikani and Blood tribes talked about how they hunted bison, using buffalo jumps and making trees into a runway for bison, Logan says.

Native people could use many parts of the bison, making things out of the hides and using the bladders as water carriers, Felicity says.

On the last day, students were able to dress up and perform skits to learn about how animals live in the wilderness, and she says it was an altogether cool experience.

CrossFit athletes were all smiles after a tough day at the gym, competing in the Festivus Games held in Pincher Creek last month.

Feats of strength celebrated at Festivus Games

By Brad Quarin For the first time, CrossFit Pincher Creek joined other gyms around the world in hosting the Festivus Games, an event for beginner and intermediate athletes, in mid October.

Named for the holiday Festivus popularized by the TV series Seinfeld, the games echo the holiday in its “feats of strength” and its slogan “a functional-fitness competition for the rest of us.”

Festivus is typically observed on Dec. 23, but the games are held in April and October.

The games in Pincher Creek attracted 35 people, ranging in age from 16 to over 60 and fairly balanced between men and women, CrossFit owner Paula Szaroz says. Some athletes came from Lethbridge and Medicine Hat to participate.

There were five workouts and a final event, with feats of strength such as max-rep dead lifts and maxrep back squats, using a barbell.

There were gymnastics and a rowing machine, so athletes could try paddling. The IHOP Lose Your Lunch Special required a number of lunges, and “taxed your cardiovascular system,” Paula says.

Two athletes who particularly impressed her were Kim Thomas and Roland Milligan. Kim “was very pregnant and did the competition like a cham-

pion,” Paula says.

Roland “was super-encouraging all weekend and went over and above to make everyone feel welcome,” she says.

Both Roland and Kim received special spirit awards.

For many participants, this was their first competition, which is meant to be less intimidating, Paula says. The participants were newer members of CrossFit in Pincher Creek or other places, and she expects most will continue using the gym.

CrossFit Pincher Creek will probably be holding the Festivus Games again in April. However, those who placed first in the October games will be barred from participating again, being “too good.”

Swimmer pays it forward coaching masters program

Ryan Plante is a competitive member of the Dolphins swim team in Pincher Creek and is also the newest masters swim club coach.

By Erin Fairhurst Ryan Plante is no stranger to life in the fast lane.

After all, the Matthew Halton High School student has been swimming competitively since he was eight. And now, the 16-year-old has taken on the new challenge of coaching the masters swimming program at the Pincher Creek pool.

“I was approached to do it because I have a fair bit of experience, and it seemed like I would be a good fit,” he says.

So does “masters” mean that Ryan is coaching a group of elite swimmers?

“It’s an instructed adult swim club,” he says with a smile. “That means it’s adults of all ages and varying levels.”

Ryan has his Swimming 101 certification through Swimming Canada, and says he enjoys teaching and talking

about the benefits of swimming.

“It’s low impact and gives you a really good cardio work out, and there’s less strain on your joints, compared to other sports like running,” he says. “It’s something that anyone can pick up.”

Ryan has been coaching the masters program since the end of September, and says his young age isn’t a factor when teaching his adult pupils. “They love to listen and learn,” he says. “Typically we have around eight people per class and they’re a really great group.”

The adult swim club will remain in session on Tuesdays and Thursdays until December, and participants tackle goals such as proper swimming technique in a friendly environment.

But just because Ryan wears the coach’s hat for the masters club, that doesn’t mean he gets to take a break from his own training. As an active

member of the Dolphins Swim Club, Ryan still hits the pool regularly to remain conditioned for race season.

“In the winter, I only swim about two days a week, but the focus is more on lifeguarding competitions,” he says, adding that his summer training schedule is slightly more intense — two hours of swimming a day, five days a week.

His training is paying off: the 2015 race season yielded him six medals at regionals in Lethbridge and two medals at provincials in Edmonton.

When not at the pool, Ryan can be found playing basketball, volleyball or out skiing.

Mark your calendar for Remembrance Day

By Brad Quarin November is here and proud Canadians will be taking time next Wednesday to honour the men and women who have served their country.

Remembrance Day ceremonies will take place in Pincher Creek, Crowsnest Pass and Twin Butte.

In Pincher Creek, services start shortly before 11 a.m. at Community Hall, says Legion president Dick Burnham. There will be a moment of silence at 11, followed by the laying of wreaths. Be there early, as the hall fills quickly for these ceremonies.

Following the services, at 12:30 p.m. a chili lunch will be served at the Legion hall to members and everyone who participated in the parade. Upstairs, a separate lunch will be provided for cadets, scouts and girl guides.

In Crowsnest Pass, the Blairmore, Bellevue and Coleman Legions take turns running the municipality’s Remembrance Day ceremonies.

This year’s services are being organized by the Coleman Legion and will be held at Crowsnest Consolidated High School in Coleman. Services start at 10:30 a.m. with a parade of veterans and parade of colours.

Special guests will be present, including MP John Barlow, who will speak at the services, and the Alberta Justice and Solicitor General Pipes and Drums, who will perform “Amazing Grace,” “Highland Cathedral” and “Going Home.”

The pipes and drums group is “quite prestigious,” says Debby Greenwood, Coleman Legion secretary-treasurer.

The band approached the Coleman Legion in August about performing in Crowsnest Pass, as it rotates between northern and southern Alberta each year.

“I contacted Bellevue and Blairmore for approval and we all agreed that they would be an excellent guest performer for this year,” Debby says. With the local choir unavailable this year, the band will be most welcome at the ceremonies.

Performances are free, with the Legions covering the group’s accommodations and providing them with a meal on Remembrance Day. Pipe Major Jim Perry says the JSG Pipe and Drums was formed in 2006 and consists of Alberta sheriffs, correctional services officers, Fish and Wildlife officers and a retired Mountie. Numerous members of the band formerly served with the Canadian Forces.

Afterwards, individual branch services will be held at Bellevue at noon, Blairmore at 1 p.m. and Coleman at 1:30.

A Remembrance Day ceremony will also be held at the Twin Butte cenotaph, located behind Twin Butte Hall. Attendees will gather at 10:30 a.m., with the ceremony and laying of wreaths at 11.

Bert Riggall’s legacy explored through historic exhibit in Pincher Creek

By Erin Fairhurst When Wendy Ryan is out on the trail with her horses, she’s the one who is always up ahead snapping photos of the scenery, of the rest of her group, of surroundings that are both ever changing and ever constant.

“I suppose that’s part of why I feel a connection with Bert Riggall,” she says.

Born in 1884, Bert Riggall was a naturalist, an outfitter, a mountain guide, a hunter, a gunsmith and a photographer.

“He took photos of absolutely everything,” says Wendy.

Wendy is the curator of the Bert Riggall Historic Photo Exhibit, currently on display at Lebel Gallery in Pincher Creek. The exhibit was displayed over the summer in Waterton, and will soon go on tour as a travelling exhibit around the province for two years.

A selection of black-and-white photographs adorn the walls of Lebel Gallery and they depict scenes of the southern Rockies that represent a simpler time — a narrative of rustic living and rugged landscapes told through the sweeping panoramas of Bert Riggall’s weathered lens.

Indeed, the tales told through these historic photos make it evident that Bert Riggall’s legacy is more than just the thousands of photographs and negatives he left behind.

“He was very connected with the wilderness and the land,” says Bert’s grandson, Charlie Russell. “His photographs help people

to understand what he was about. The legacy that he left behind is just mind-blowing.”

The exhibit is part of an project undertaken by the Bert Riggall Environmental Foundation.

“A lot of time and energy went into this,” Wendy says, adding that she made several trips to the Whyte Museum in Banff to collect materials for the exhibit.

“To know that people are enjoying the exhibit, and learning about Mr. Riggall and the Russell family is just a joy to hear.”

Thirty-seven people attended the opening reception on Oct. 10. In addition to viewing the photographic displays, guests were invited to sign a custom leather guest book and to fill out cards with stories or memories of Bert Riggall and the Russell family, so that more of their legacy may be preserved.

Charlie Russell, whose father, Andy Russell, married Bert’s daughter Kay Riggall, was on hand at the exhibit opening with his brothers John and Gordon to pay tribute to their grandfather, but he also had kind words for Wendy.

“I really appreciate Wendy Ryan’s efforts,” he said. “What she has done is very important to us. It’s quite wonderful.”

The exhibit remains on display at Lebel Gallery until Nov. 14, so don’t miss your chance to experience a piece of local history.

By Brad Quarin Darcy Draper has left strong memories for many Crowsnest Pass residents.

Darcy passed away in December 2014 and his life will be honoured with an event in support of the Women’s Resource and Crisis Centre in Blairmore.

Desiree Simoneau, Darcy’s cousin, is the co-ordinator of the Women’s Resource and Crisis Centre.

She recalls that although Darcy wasn’t directly involved in the centre, he was a strong supporter of local charities, and someone who loved helping where he could. One organization he was particularly involved with was the Ricky Ryp Foundation; its volunteer-of-the-year award has been renamed in memory of him.

Last December, the centre held a fundraiser at Greenhill Hotel. It took place just a day after Darcy’s funeral, Desiree says, making it a rather solemn occasion. This year the fundraiser honours Darcy and she hopes the event will be more of a celebration of his life.

Tickets are selling now for the Darcy Draper Memorial Fundraiser, coming to the Greenhill Hotel on Dec. 12. They are available at the Blairmore Scotiabank at $60 each, which includes the price of the taxi ride home. This means no one will have an excuse to drink and then drive.

To help the centre, the national Scotiabank Bright Future Program will match donations to ticket sales, up to $5,000. Last year, tickets were also sold at Scotiabank, meeting this $5,000 target.

The evening will start at 5:30, with dinner at 6, and will feature Yuk Yuk comedians, local musicians and a silent auction.

All proceeds will support the Women’s Resource Centre, especially its anti-bullying and self-esteem school programs, and some will be used for operational costs. The centre also plans to use these resources to develop new community programs, Desiree says.

The event will be of special interest to the many people who worked with Darcy and to his family, but it is open to everyone.

Sherry Sinnott (born Sherry-Lyn McClain), wife of Les Sinnott, passed away on Oct. 21, 2015, in the Foothills Hospital, at the age of 63. She was born on June 5, 1952, to Glen and Edna McClain.

Besides her husband, Les, she is survived by her two sons, Dwayne Sinnott of Lethbridge, Brad Sinnott (Lisa) and their children Evan and Avery of Calgary; her brothers Merle McClain of Lethbridge, Doug McClain of Pincher Creek; and a sister, Corinne Cyr of Pincher Creek.

She is also survived by numerous sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces and nephews.

Sherry was predeceased by her parents, Edna and Glen McClain; two brothers, Thomas and Derryl McClain; a brother-in-law, Maurice Cyr; as well as her in-laws Ernest and Isabelle Sinnott.

She had a gift for sewing and painting and she loved being around her children and grandchildren.

The memorial service was held at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Pincher Creek on Oct. 28, 2015, with interment following in Fairview Cemetery.

Marlene White passed away at Chinook Regional Hospital in Lethbridge on Oct. 25, 2015. Marlene was born on May 30, 1932, in Lethbridge.

Marlene was predeceased by her husband, Danny White; daughter Melinda White; and brother Bill Pearson.

She is survived by her children, Darryl White, Perina (Keith) Bancroft, Diane (Darren) Dunne, Jim (Dawn) Negrey; her grandchildren, Stephanie, Scott and Amanda Bancroft, Chantelle Dunne, Caitlin (Jeremy) Parkhouse, Tia White, Alan Noyze; and her great-grandsons, Tristen and Zayden.

Marlene loved crafts and enjoyed listening to the radio. She loved taking walks and going for coffee. When Marlene lived out at Pincher Station, she would walk to Pincher Creek and back for groceries, making sure her family always had food. Marlene was a very friendly person; she got along with everyone and had a way of making you feel part of the family.

God decided it was time to bring you home, in our hearts and dreams you will remain forever.

A graveside service was held on Oct. 31, 2015, at the Fairview Cemetery in Pincher Creek, with Father Silvano officiating.

Chamber of commerce rewards excellence in Pincher Creek

By Brad Quarin Merriment was shared, delicious food was savoured and fingers were crossed at the awards banquet held in October by the Pincher Creek and District Chamber of Commerce.

The evening saw the presentation of the 20th annual Awards of Excellence, honouring local businesses, business people and a volunteer group.

The crowd, made up of nominees, sponsors, families and friends, showed good sportsmanship, applauding each other even when in competition for an award. Laughs were also had, as master of ceremonies Bob Westrop led the evening with his folksy charm.

Success is delicious at Ducks Unlimited banquet

By Brad Quarin An “awesome” evening in mid October was a boon to the Pincher Creek chapter of Ducks Unlimited and its efforts to enhance the wetlands of southern Alberta, says treasurer Shelley Ingram.

Around 140 people attended the banquet, enjoyed great food and placed bids in live and silent auctions.

After the expenses of the evening, the auctions and raffle raised approximately $17,000, putting it on the same level of success as last year, Shelley says.

The money will all stay in southern Alberta to enhance wetland environments. Shelley heard that the group did a wonderful job recently building up wetlands near Claresholm.

The Pincher Creek chapter

has about 20 members, and many of them have been with the organization for 25 years or more.

Shelley has been with the group for six years.

The chapter is always interested in recruiting more people.

She notes it is not a huge time commitment, as members of the local chapter mainly run the annual banquet and collect donations.

It is with great sadness that the Beaudette family announce the sudden passing of their son Brett Steve Danis, in Lethbridge, on Oct. 21, 2015, at the tender age of 19.

Brett was born in Saskatoon, Sask., to Charlene Danis and Philip Ballantyne on June 22, 1996. He was a happy-go-lucky child who was always smiling, and known to be a prankster who liked to joke around. He especially liked to tease his little sister Elicia.

Brett enjoyed spending time socializing with his friends and welcomed the company of young ladies. His time was spent socializing with friends in local pubs. Some of his pastimes were fishing, jogging, playing football and soccer. Brett faced some challenges with school, and made the decision to move to Lethbridge to seek employment.

He will be greatly missed by his parents, Charlene and Ray Beaudette of Pincher Creek, and his father, Philip Ballantyne of Prince Albert, Sask.; his siblings, Travis Ballantyne and Elicia Ballantyne of Prince Albert; his stepsiblings, Colby Beaudette and Kyle Beaudette of High Prairie, Alta., and Dylan Boyer and Denishia Boyer of Prince Albert; and his grandparents Celina Danis and Rene and Mary Ballantyne.

He was predeceased by his grandfather Steve Istevan Bejczi.

A family viewing was held at the Snodgrass Funeral Chapel on Oct. 24, followed by a memorial mass on Oct. 27, 2015, at St. Michael’s Catholic Church, with Father Freddy Valdivia, celebrant. Pallbearers were Gillian Wolf Plume, Dylan Morin, Blake Morin and Travis Ballantyne.

Strategies for sustainable competitive advantage

By Kirk Clements Strategic thinking is about creating, protecting and exploiting competitive advantages. Your business is your castle that must be defended against competitors.

Moats are defensive barriers to entry, typically built to surround castles and protect them. In order to even get to the castle, first you have to get past the moat. You want a moat filled with water and in that water you want sharks and crocodiles, and each year you want to widen your moat and add more sharks and crocodiles.

You need to identify the competitive advantages your business possesses and do what you can to expand those advantages, year after year. The more barriers to entry faced by potential competitors, the more pricing power you will have in your business. That translates into a more profitable business.

There are really only three sustainable competitive advantages: Supply — These are cost advantages that allow you to produce and

deliver products or services more cheaply than competitors. Sometimes the lower costs stem from privileged access to crucial inputs. Most cost advantages are due to proprietary technology that is protected by patents or by experience — know-how — or some combination of both.

Demand — Some companies have access to market demand that their competitors cannot match.

This access is not simply a matter of product differentiation or branding, since competitors may be equally able to differentiate or brand their products. These demand advantages arise because of customer captivity that is based on habit, on the costs of switching, or on the difficulties and expenses of searching for a substitute provider.

Economies of scale — If costs per unit decline as volume increases, because fixed costs make up a large share of total costs, then even with the same basic technology, an incumbent firm operating at large scale will enjoy lower costs than its competitors.

So does your business have a moat

— a strategic competitive advantage?

Lots of competitors have similar access to customers, technologies and other cost advantages. When each company is in more or less the same competitive position, anything that one company does to improve its position can and will be immediately copied.

This process of innovation and imitation repeats itself continually. In these markets it is best not to try to outmanoeuvre the competitors, but to outrun them by operating as efficiently as possible.

But all is not lost. Business differentiation allows you to position your products or services so that consumers can distinguish between those that are offered by your business and those offered by the competition. You always differentiate your business based on what customers value as important when making purchasing decisions.

Learn what your customers want.

Analyze your competition — who they are, how they communicate to the customer, what they do to compete.

Create product differentiation with

simple techniques: — superior service — greater product availability — higher quality — better performance — greater durability — respected image; prestige — technology leadership — customer support; satisfaction guarantee Let’s look at a pizza restaurant.

There might be a couple of the national pizza chains already in the community, so how do you differentiate your pizza shop from them? How about installing a volcano that erupts what looks like pizza sauce every 15 minutes. The kids would drag Mom and Dad to that pizza shop. I’ll leave it to you to work out the details for differentiating your business, but try to have some fun with it.

On the Menu: Twin Butte Restaurant

By N. Carraway Visiting Twin Butte Country General Store & Mexican Restaurant feels like dropping in on an old friend: warm, inviting and comfortably casual. It also feels surprisingly out of place — adding to its charm and individuality.

Located in the heart of southern Alberta cattle and farming country, the small space replicates a restaurant in a sleepy Mexican village, with limited seating on well-worn bar stools, a mix of whiskey barrels or tiled tables, or, in summer, on the newer outdoor patio.

The walls are painted a warm ochre with cobalt-blue trim accents, and graced with an eclectic mix of Mexican décor, local photography and watercolours, aged licence plates and cattle skulls. Magazine racks carry a variety of material, including the area’s required reading such as the Western Producer, Alberta Farmer and Ag in Motion.

Twin Butte features live music on select evenings, but on our visit, radio

tunes from country greats Patsy Cline and Johnny Cash added to its unpretentious charm.

But, of course, it’s the food you’ll come for.

We started with a hearty bowl of corn chips, salsa and guacamole. The homemade salsa was a delicious blend of fresh tomatoes, onion, and jalapeno peppers, with a hint of cilantro. It was slightly sweet and quite mild on the heat index, while the velvety smooth guacamole held just the right undertone of garlic.

The special that evening was a poutine of roasted potatoes, gravy and cheese curds with a choice of pulled pork, chorizo sausage or beef brisket for $13.99.

Appealing, but I wanted something more authentic and decided to go for the pulled pork and pineapple tacos for $14.95. Consisting of two soft corn tortillas filled with pulled pork, pineapple chunks, cheese, green onions, fresh tomatoes and lettuce, it was spiced with

a chipotle dressing that lent an earthy, spicy layer. Delicious!

My wife had the fish tacos, two hard corn tortillas filled with mahi-mahi, a moderately fat fish with firm, flavourful flesh. Each taco was filled with a large slice of fish, seasoned and grilled to perfection, and dressed with fresh tomato and cucumber chunks and a wedge of fresh lime for $15.95.

Both meals were served with banana peppers and generous sides of refried beans and Spanish rice topped with green onion sprigs and a suggestion of grated cheddar cheese.

Other menu items include chimichanga with your choice of smoked beef brisket, pulled pork or chorizo; enchiladas with chicken, ground beef or pulled pork; Mexican torta, a large sandwich served on a sourdough bun; and, of course, tacos, burritos, quesadillas, wraps and burgers — beef, bison or Mexican.

The menu also offers a hearty selection of breakfast items such as huevos

rancheros or the Mexican scrambler, served from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

An interesting assortment of hot sauces is also available for those who want to turn up the heat.

We were both wonderfully satisfied, so had no room left for the dessert special, which was a mixed-berry crumble served with ice cream.

No less than three different ladies served us, all friendly and efficient, who knew exactly what they were doing. They each made us as comfortable as the worn barn-board bar, the rustic whiskey barrels and the casual atmosphere of good food and good times.

This is a place that doesn’t take itself too seriously but serves seriously good Mexican cuisine.

I’m told the owners take a month off every year and head down to Mexico.

Whether they use these trips to add to their repertoire or just to reboot after a busy year, the reopening would be well worth the month-long wait.
