My Little Corner It seems fitting that snow is falling this Monday before Remembrance Day as I write these words. It takes me back many years to when I was a Brownie and then a Girl Guide.

Like the young girls pictured on our front page and the boys on the facing page, we were taught the importance of Remembrance Day. In those days, a parade made its way down the main street of our town. Thirty-five years ago the veterans were physically capable of making the trek and did so with great pride.

With brown socks pulled up to my knees and layers of clothing underneath my short-skirted dress, I wished my tam covered more than the top of my head. We were proud girls in our uniforms.

I whined once about the wind and cold, and our leader pointed toward the men and women standing tall in their regalia. She said that compared to what they had endured, I had nothing to complain about.

I understood her message, even though I didn’t fully comprehend its depth until many years later.

Now, processions in the cold days of November are found in few communities. As our veterans have aged and their numbers have dwindled, they are no longer expected to endure the elements on a day meant to honour their service.

I don’t think it’s a bad thing that the snow is here today to make the red of the poppies stand out a little bit brighter.

I worry about some of our youth who view attendance at school and community services with loathing. “I’m bored” and “This isn’t relevant to me” are comments often heard.

I worry that they will learn, too late, just how relevant the life of every veteran, living or passed, truly is with respect to their freedom.

We have been desensitized to violence through modern media, games and technology. I find it quite frightening that war and terror invade our lives on a daily basis in one form or another.

Veterans continue to fight personal demons and hardships and it is a shame that so many do not receive the assistance they need.

This week’s issue is a tribute not only to veterans, but also to our community members and organizations who make sure they are honoured as they deserve.

Thank you to all who shared their stories, memories, photos and poems. It’s amazing that these contributions cover almost the entire paper.

We must never forget.

Wearing a poppy is about more than symbolism

By Brad Quarin Choosing a poppy and chipping in whatever you can afford can mean a lot this Remembrance Day. Donations in the poppy campaign go into the Royal Canadian Legion’s Poppy Fund, benefiting struggling veterans and other community groups. The value of your donation goes beyond simply remembering.

The Pincher Creek, Bellevue, Blairmore and Coleman Legions have all put out poppies in their communities, making them available in businesses and schools.

Dick Waywood, co-chairman of the Poppy Fund for the Pincher Creek Legion with Norman Walker, says they put out 125 poppy boxes throughout the town and municipal district. In addition, the Pincher Creek Legion usually sells 130 wreaths.

Wayne Shaw says the Bellevue Legion distributed 13 trays of poppies, which together would contain thousands of poppies.

The trays can be found in businesses in Bellevue, Hillcrest and Frank.

The Bellevue Legion also keeps a list of people who have purchased wreaths before, in case they want to buy another, he says.

The wreaths can be laid in memory of a dad, grandpa or other loved one, or by a business.

POPPY FUND, continued from page 5 The Legion sells wreaths at cost, with prices ranging from $35 to $55.

The Coleman Legion has placed 25 trays of poppies in Coleman businesses and at Crowsnest Mall, says secretary-treasurer Debby Greenwood. Anyone can also contact the Legion to purchase a wreath.

There’s no set price for a poppy. Wayne and Debby say that some individuals might have only a nickel to donate, while others may donate as much as $20. If someone can’t afford to pay for a poppy, the Legions don’t insist on payment, Dick and Wayne say.

Stores and schools aren’t the only places to pick up a poppy. The Girl Guides in Pincher Creek agreed to go door to door with poppies this year, Dick says.

The Poppy Fund backs many worthwhile endeavours. First and foremost are the veterans.

The Blairmore Legion uses its Poppy Fund only for veterans, and a veteran does not need to be a member of the Legion, an executive says. The money can be used to cover medical needs, and the Legion might contribute medical equipment to a nursing home for that purpose.

Generally, a veteran will ask for help with a single expense; occasionally this help may extend to

a second request. An initial decision is made by the branch, which is then approved by the district.

Funds for veterans might cover meals or transportation to the hospital, Wayne says. In some instances, funds can be used to provide housing for senior, disabled or homeless veterans, though this is rarely the case in Bellevue.

In Coleman, in one instance, the Legion helped a veteran’s family pay for utilities, Debby says.

One intended purpose of the Poppy Fund is to help with mobility for aging veterans. This may come in the form of a lift chair to help a veteran stand, or a power chair or scooter, Debby says.

Besides veterans, most Royal Canadian Legion branches also donate to community groups through the Poppy Fund.

Both the Bellevue and Coleman Legions donate to the local Royal Canadian Air Cadets, explain Wayne and Debby. The Coleman Legion has also supported hospitals and lodges for seniors.

Dick says the Pincher Creek Legion has supported STARS air ambulance and the Care Bears group.

So, before you go to Remembrance Day ceremonies this year, pick up a poppy. Your donation may extend well beyond your expectations.

A woman driven to serve

By Erin Fairhurst At 92, Dorothy McGregor (née Gate) still recalls the moment she first drove a vehicle — or, rather, attempted to.

“I was 13,” she says, smiling.

“I looked out the window at my dad’s truck and said ‘Today is the day.’ ” Dorothy made it as far as turning the key in the ignition before her father caught her. A month later, she tried again with the family car because she hoped the quieter engine would help her get away with her plan. This time she made it a few inches out of the garage before her father once again intervened.

“He said, ‘Put that back where you found it and leave it alone,’ ” the York Creek Lodge resident says with a laugh.

But Dorothy, who was born and raised in Coleman, persevered and eventually got her driver’s licence on her own.

“It was my turn to set the table for supper and I made sure to put my new driver’s licence ever so nicely next to his plate,” she says. “He just gave me one of those looks.”

But eventually, Dorothy’s father relented. “He had a weekend baseball game at the Michel Hotel, and he looked at me and said I could drive us there. I was in heaven!”

The trip didn’t go as planned. As she was navigating the old highway, Dorothy hit a rock. “My father looked at me and said, ‘The only bloody rock on the highway and you had to hit it!’ ” But luckily for Dorothy, her father didn’t hold a grudge. When the baseball game was over, he tossed the keys to his daughter and said “Let’s see if you can hit another rock!”

A few years later, during the height of the Second World War, her father once again gave her his support. All around her, her male cousins, friends and neighbours were enlisting.

“I said ‘What can I do?’ ” Dorothy recalls. The answer was obvious. She signed up for the Canadian Women’s Army Corps.

“Dad said ‘It’s your life’ and let me do it.”

Dorothy completed her training in Red Deer and was posted in Calgary at the Currie Barracks.

The role of the Canadian Women’s Army Corps was to release men for active duty in the front lines by replacing them in essential, but non-combat, roles.

Dorothy, naturally, became a motor-transport driver. She was assigned a vehicle, “a good old GM,” and drove supplies, personnel and high-ranking officials all over the province.

“We were taught how to service the vehicles, the whole works,” Dorothy says. “I enjoyed every moment.”

She drove to Edmonton at least three times a week and also made regular trips to the three prisoner camps in her area — Lethbridge, Medicine Hat and Seebe in Kananaskis country. The days were long and often involved early mornings on the road, but Dorothy didn’t mind. Her good attitude never faltered and neither did her confidence behind the wheel.

“There was one railroad bridge that made a lot of the drivers nervous,” she recalls. “It was so narrow you had to hit it just right with your wheels. But after driving over it about 10 times, I felt just fine.”

A highlight for Dorothy was a special assignment in which she was designated to pick up the American ambassador to Canada. Two other vehicles were on the ambassador’s detail, both for his family and entourage, but Dorothy drove the lead vehicle. She took the ambassador around Banff and through the Columbia Icefields and then arrived back in Calgary with an RCMP escort.

As exciting as the experience was for Dorothy, she says the best part about her time in the Canadian Women’s Army Corps was meeting her husband.

“That gets first prize,” she says.

Dorothy’s husband was a mechanic stationed at Currie Barracks. “He was working at the grease rack and I handed him some forms, and asked him to sign his John Henry,” she recalls.

When Dorothy looked down at the forms, she was both amused and annoyed to see that the fellow had written “John Henry.” Later she learned that the mechanic’s name was indeed John Henry McGregor.

“But no one called him that,” she says. “He always went by Jerry.”

They were married shortly after the war ended, and returned to Coleman, where they ran the Texaco service station.

One of Dorothy’s most profound memories from the time she served is of a young soldier she encountered at the train station in Calgary. “I would bring the ambulance to pick up the incoming wounded and we would transport them to hospitals.”

The young man that Dorothy was transporting had lost both an arm and a leg. “He was so cheerful and had such a big smile,” Dorothy recalls. “After I talked with him, I wondered if I would ever smile like he did if I’d suffered the way he had. Would you?

Would anyone?”

Months later, Dorothy was at the Calgary Stampede and heard an excited voice calling out to her “Driver! Driver!” She looked out into the crowd and saw that same soldier, with the same big smile, waving with his remaining arm.

“He was having a great time, and still had such a wonderful attitude,” she says, smiling. “That’s something you never forget.”

Beth remembers her brother signing up for the army. He signed up when he was only 17, with consent from their father. He lied to officials and said he was 18 so he could go and be a part of the war. He had to go to Claresholm and started to learn how to fly airplanes.

He got flown over to Great Britain, and was training to fly airplanes, but somewhere along the way people found out he was only 17. He was almost sent home, but he told the officials, “I’m 18 in four months. You can send me home but I’m just coming back.”

The officials let him stay, and he stayed for four years.

Beth’s brother was a little guy. He had to be given steps so he could get in and out of the plane. Plus, there were steps inside the plane so his feet could touch the pedals. All his friends there in Great Britain gave him a hard time because of his size.

Beth’s brother served his time. The war was finally over. Her brother desperately wanted to come home.

Unfortunately, he was unable to return right away.

He was kept there for four months after the war, and found himself bored from time to time.

At that time he was a warrant officer, Beth thinks.

So some of the guys suggested that he “fly under the bridge.” He did this, got caught and lost his ranking.

As he went under the bridge, apparently someone took the plane number down and reported it.

Beth remembers him, when he came home, as a joker and a take-it-as-it-comes kind of person. He lost part of his pension for his shenanigans but kept his good spirit. Beth remembers him speaking of the good times he had while there. He always tried to keep a positive outlook on life.

Mary Williams

Mary was in high school during the Second World War, grades 9 to 12. She remembers being a little too young to be interested in the air force fellows. But she has many memories.

When on a leave of absence, some of the air force guys would visit families around where Mary lived,

including at her house. They would do chores and stay at different families’ homes. It was a variety of nationalities that came to this province for training.

Mary can remember Scots, Australians and New Zealanders. They hung around till they got their wings and could fly.

One time there were two fellas who came to their family home. They said they didn’t have to go back.

So they helped Mary’s dad pick potatoes and do various chores around the farm.

Eventually, Mary’s dad was thinking these men were overstaying their welcome and proceeded to question them. Sure enough, they were absent without leave. The boys wouldn’t go to town for fear of being found and sent back to the base. Mary doesn’t know where they went after their stay at her family home.

They all started to talk about when all the women had to go to work. When the men went to war, the women went to the factories or took care of the farm.

They talked about how today and back then are so different. Women only went to work because the men left.

When the men came back, the women went back to being housewives. The jobs were for the men so they could support their families.

She remembers sitting in the family home, listening to the radio. It was battery-operated, so the reception wasn’t always very good.

But one evening she heard Hitler’s voice over the radio. She remembers that he sounded crazy and just his voice scared her. Her parents allowed her and her sisters and brothers to listen because they wanted the kids to know what was going on in that part of the world.

Theresa also remembers that some women got the privilege to fly planes across the ocean. She thinks perhaps to Ireland or England. This happened because the men were busy getting trained for war and were not available to fly these planes.

In honour of Remembrance Day, our office will be closed Nov. 11.

Remembrance begins at home This is a photo of my grandpa Eli George Hegberg. He served in the Second World War. I have fond memories of sitting on his lap while he drove the old blue Chrysler, and of him telling me stories about the war. Oh, how I loved to hear his stories!

I remember him telling me that when I grew up, I should always vote, for a great price was paid for me to have that privilege.

He was an active member of the Red Photo courtesy of J. Sheen Deer Legion, and would often take me Eli George Hegberg there to have some pop and french fries with gravy, and brag to all of his war buddies about me, his favourite girl!

He told me that the only good thing about the war was that he met my grandma, Gladys Edwina Ware. Both of them are buried in the Red Deer Legion Cemetery. I do not want their legacy to fade away.

As such, I have taught my girls all of the important things that were instilled in me about our country and our freedom. Now that my girls are both adults, I have admonished them to continue to remind their children of the blessings that have been afforded to all of us through my grandparents’ service to our country.

Our family honours and thanks all of our veterans. We will remember them.

I remember ...

It was a beautiful spring day in May 1942. The four-yearold little boy was playing on the street with his friend, a little girl. The sidewalk was partially torn up, as they were in the process of repaving, so there was a great sandbox to play in.

Suddenly there was a lot of commotion in front of the grocery store, owned by the father of the little girl. There was a big truck stopped in front, but it was not one of the regular delivery trucks. The girl and the boy ran over to see what that was all about.

When they got there, they saw the father, the mother and their 16-year-old son already sitting in the back of the truck.

Then one of the men lifted the little girl up onto the truck.

She was crying and so was the little boy, because he wanted to go along. But one of the neighbours grabbed him by the hand and said, “This is not for you!”

By Ken Roome A splash of red in a puddle of mud, Unnoticed but for the colour of blood.

A poppy fallen from a coat I thought, A donation given, peace of mind bought.

What a thought provoking find, Offered to me with soldiers on my mind.

This time of year I am driven to, Acknowledge what our soldiers go through.

Hastily eaten meals, in heat or mud.

All too often they spill their blood.

Grieving parents, children or wife, All left to remember a fallen soldier’s life.

We promised our dead we would remember, So we decorate monuments each November.

When Baby Boomers no longer exist, Who will ever believe in this?

So I kneel on the edge of the mud, And pick up a Poppy, the colour of blood.

I place the Poppy on the new grave stone, The grave of a soldier fallen at home.

I wrote “Fallen” after the deaths in October 2014 of Warrant Officer Patrice Vincent and, especially, Cpl. Nathan Cirillo. The muddy poppy had been in my mind for years, but it would not grow until this tragic event.

Two days later, the little girl, her brother, her dad and her mom were all killed in the gas chamber of a Nazi extermination camp. Their crime against humanity? They were Jews.

Her name was Sonja Pinto. She had gorgeous red hair and she used to smile a lot. A smile I will never forget. I was that little boy, 73 years ago.

Long live the ladies of the Legion!

By Erin Fairhurst The Ladies Auxiliary of the Bellevue Legion, Branch No. 19, first formed just over 80 years ago, in 1934. Annie Gatzky wasn’t around for those early days, but with 45 years of involvement, she’s one of the longest-standing members.

“I’m a life member,” she says.

Annie is currently the past president of the ladies auxiliary and says she got involved back in 1970, when a friend invited her for a night out.

“My friend suggested I join,” Annie recalls. “She said it was a lot of fun. There were different activities like crib tournaments and helping with decorating for different events.

“I was raising four children

alone and they also had a lot of activities for children at the time.”

During her years with the auxiliary, Annie’s had the opportunity to attend many different rallies and conventions and to meet new and different people along the way.

“It’s something that I’ve really enjoyed,” she says, adding that she’s pleased with the good work the women do throughout the community.

During the war years, women came to the aid of wounded war veterans who were returning home and in need of assistance — whether it was with cooking, or visiting them in the hospital to offer a cheerful smile and a listening ear. It was through these steadfast groups of women

that the Royal Canadian Legion Ladies Auxiliary was started.

Today, the Bellevue Legion is the only branch in Crowsnest Pass with an active ladies auxiliary, but that doesn’t mean there’s a shortage of work for them to do.

“We’re a busy little Legion,” says Susan Demchuk, president of the auxiliary.

She’s held the position for the past three years, but has been involved for over a decade. “My mother was a member for years and she encouraged me to join,” Susan says, adding that two of her uncles were PoWs. The auxiliary will be on hand at the Bellevue Legion this Wednesday, serving up their annual Remembrance Day luncheon at 1 p.m. “We’ll have

hotdogs for the kids and chili and stew for the veterans and other community members,” Susan says.

The ladies of the Legion have been busy decorating and preparing food for the occasion — and they don’t plan on stopping anytime soon.

“After Remembrance Day, we’ll be hosting a seniors Christmas party at the Legion,” Susan says, “and so we’ll be moving right from one event to another.”

The party takes place Nov. 26 and is open to all seniors in the community. “There are door prizes, songs, and even a visit from Santa,” Susan says.

But in this case, Santa won’t need help from any elves — he’s got the Legion Ladies Auxiliary.

100 years ago, in Flanders Fields

By Erin Fairhurst Lt. Alexis Helmer was 22 years old on the morning of May 2, 1915. He was stationed in Ypres, the last city in Belgium to resist German occupation, along with 18,000 other soldiers of the First Canadian Division.

He had spent the last several weeks fighting alongside the French and British soldiers during the Battle of Ypres.

Records reveal that his final diary entry read: “It has quieted a little and I shall try to get a good sleep.”

Enclosed in the diary was photo of his sweetheart — his fiancée waiting for him back home — so worn that it had a hole right through it. But Lt. Helmer was never reunited with his sweetheart. Instead, as he emerged from his dugout on May 2, he was killed instantly by a direct hit from a German shell. It is likely he barely had time to glimpse the early morning sunlight.

The name Alexis Helmer is not familiar to many, but his legacy is.

The poem “In Flanders Fields” was written by his good friend Lt.-Col. John McCrae, and was inspired in part by his death.

At 41, John McCrae was a wellrespected doctor who could have joined the medical corps. Instead, he chose to be a gunner in the artillery.

His friendship with Alexis Helmer might seem an unlikely one due to the difference in their ages. Or perhaps not, given that they were both far away from home and experiencing the horrors of war together. Both had attended McGill University and likely would have walked the same halls and courtyards before meeting on the battlefield.

It is said that after Alexis’s sunset burial, John McCrae sat down on the back of a field ambulance and stared out at his young friend’s grave. Perhaps he thought of the countless lives

that had already been lost. Perhaps he lamented the senselessness of war. Or perhaps he simply grieved for the boy whose remains he’d just buried, along with the worn photo of his sweetheart.

But, it was then that he began penning the first lines of “In Flanders Fields.”

One hundred years later, “In Flanders Fields” remains one of the most well-known war poems ever written, and is recited every year at Remembrance Day ceremonies across the country.

This year, as you recite the words, put yourself in John McCrae’s place and try to imagine what he must have seen, heard and felt from his perch on the back of that field ambulance, in the midst of a battleground, as he began scribbling out what would become his legacy.

In the end, there are no words that can ever truly recognize the magnitude of sacrifice that was made by those who died for our freedom, but let us honour them by trying.

Air cadets show dedication to their communities

By Brad Quarin This Remembrance Day, attendees of the various community and Royal Canadian Legion services may notice the young members of the Royal Canadian Air Cadets out and about.

The 859 Crowsnest Squadron, which includes cadets from Crowsnest Pass and Pincher Creek, will be present and assisting wherever possible.

Cadets may have a better understanding of the meaning of Remembrance Day than other youth. “If they know more about the military, then they’re better citizens,” says commanding officer Daniel Desrosiers.

Dan tries to teach the cadets a lot about military history, having a “keen interest” in this subject himself. He also invites veterans to visit and speak to the group.

“There’s three aims in the cadet program, and that’s to develop citizenship and leadership, promote physical fitness, and stimulate an interest in aviation and the RCAF,” he explains.

The cadets support Remembrance Day ser-

vices by selling poppies and handling tasks such as assisting vets in wheelchairs at the ceremonies, although, most often, serving members of the Armed Forces help with the wheelchairs.

And, if schools have ceremonies, the cadets will also participate in those.

At individual Legion services, cadets lay wreaths. Dan says they try to have a presence at as many services as they can, and this year plan to visit the Blairmore, Coleman, Bellevue and Pincher Creek Legions.

“It can be a long day for the cadets,” he says.

However, it’s not only on Remembrance Day that cadets serve others. The organization has a firm role in the community. “It is a community service group,” says Dan. The organization expects a minimum of 4½ to six hours of volunteer work per training year from each cadet. Special awards encourage them to do more.

Most recently, the cadets helped put on Pumpkins in the Park in Coleman, laying out the jack-o’-lanterns and directing the public

through the paths.

The cadets often participate in highway cleanups, help serve the lobster dinners at the Bellevue Legion and veterans dinners in Pincher Creek, and march in the Canada Day parade.

A noteworthy past project was the beautification of the Hillcrest Mines cemetery.

Currently, the squadron has 14 members, fairly evenly split between cadets from Crowsnest Pass and Pincher Creek, says Dan. Most are between ages 14 and 16, with cadets open to youth from 12 to 18. There are only three female cadets at present, though they have neared gender parity in the past.

Ideally, the Crowsnest Squadron will build up enough members from Pincher Creek to allow Pincher Creek to branch off and form its own squadron.

The main obstacle to establishing a Pincher Creek squadron has been the need for more parental involvement, says Dan. In the meantime, the Crowsnest Squadron includes the name Pincher Creek in its logo.

Moccasins custom-made for your feet Michelle’s Moccasins is owned and operated by Michelle Smith of the Piikani Nation. The homebased business began operation in September 2014, specializing in the Blackfoot Plains style of moccasins, as well as other crafts.

All the moccasins are sewn by hand, working with deer hide and elk hide and using cowhide for the soles. They are custom-made, starting with a tracing of the customer’s foot, as unique as the person purchasing them, one of a kind, with

beadwork chosen by the customer.

There is a choice between a low moccasin (ankle height) or high-top moccasin (height is generally mid calf), available for all ages and both genders.

Michelle learned her trade-craft from her mother, Roberta Smith, and her late grandmother Susan Smith (nee Yellow Wings), from the Piikani Nation. Her customer base is in Canada and the United States, but her moccasins have also travelled to Italy, Australia, Denmark and Turkey. Other beadwork created by Michelle is in England, Japan and Montana.

I thought it would be nice to stay at home, to make extra money so we could afford things because I live on pension.

When friends asked us to look after their puppies when they went away for a weekend, I thought it would be nice to make a few extra dollars on a regular basis. I have been doing dog sitting for three years, and enjoy it very much.

I love to play with the dogs when they come to visit. I play with them outside when the weather is nice, or when it’s inclement I play with them

inside. I enjoy all the different types of dogs that come to visit and have made lasting friendships with their owners.

Dogs that need TLC also have a place in my heart. I have a fenced yard and people feel at ease when they leave their dogs here. I feel the dogs are a blessing in my life.

It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of Clarence William Morrow, formerly of Coleman, who was called to be with the Lord on Oct. 30, 2015, at the age of 89.

Clarence was born on Feb. 23, 1926, in Carlyle, Sask., to parents Jack and Cassie Morrow. The third of five children, Clarence learned the value of family and community.

As he grew to manhood, he answered the call to serve our country and enlisted in the Canadian Armed Forces. He braved many conflicts and silently bore the memories of each struggle. His dedication for the freedoms and liberties we now enjoy is a testament to the courage and selflessness of this wonderful man.

After the end of his term of service, Clarence met a lovely and gentle lady, Annie Thomson. After a brief courtship, they pledged their love in holy matrimony on May 13, 1950, in Winnipeg. They were further blessed with five children, and relocated to Crowsnest Pass in March 1969.

Clarence maintained his commitment to family by gaining employment as a town police officer, then at Philips Cables, and then moving on to Coleman Collieries and Line Creek mines. His intentions to be a good provider to his family led him to many other vocations as well.

He cherished his family and taught them to be respectful, honest and grateful for all the gifts life has to offer. He loved to spend time with his beloved Annie, whether it was dancing or late-night cribbage games. He enjoyed horseback riding and mentoring the youth in the community.

Clarence received the Citizen of the Year award in 1999, the Alberta Centennial Medal in 2005, and the prestigious Palm Leaf Award for his work with the Legion. He was a man who believed that actions spoke louder than words. He was a determined individual who inspired those around him and, although he never claimed to be perfect, he was a good man who made our world a better place.

He leaves to mourn and celebrate his life, his family: his children Carol (Nick) Wasylien of Coleman, Bob (Irene) Morrow of Lethbridge, Brian Morrow of Lethbridge and Donna (Jeff) Davis of Bellevue; his daughter-in-law Bev Morrow of Lethbridge; his grandchildren, Jason Morrow, Shaun (Jennifer) Wasylien, Jamie (Daina) Wasylien, Sandi Morrow, Brody Morrow, Brent Morrow and Dylan Davis; his great grandchildren, Kiera, Taylor, Hailey and Andrea; numerous nieces and nephews; extended family, comrades and friends, especially his dear friend Lucille Thibeault.

He was predeceased by his wife, Annie Morrow; his son Ken Morrow; his parents, Jack and Cassie Morrow; and his siblings, Ethel, Richard, Reginald and Gladys.

The memorial service honouring Clarence’s life was held on Nov. 4, 2015, at Fantin’s Funeral Chapel in Blairmore, with Rev. Bill Plant and Rev. Nicky Keyworth officiating. The Royal Canadian Legion provided a special tribute.

Kind, loving, and a little bit shy are words that come to mind when describing Annie (Ann) Jackson, who was born on Dec. 13, 1929, and passed away at Vista Village in Pincher Creek on Oct. 28, 2015, at the age of 85.

Ann was born in Pincher Creek and raised on the family homestead at Beauvais Lake, and was one of seven children. She did very well for receiving limited education because of not living in a registered school district and having to travel as well as board in town for school. She was quite a tomboy in her younger years and was nicknamed Annie Oakley because she was such a crack shot and loved to ride horses.

Ann was a member of the Royal Purple as well as the Royal Canadian Legion. She worked outside the home briefly, but for the most part had her hands very full raising seven children. She loved camping and spending time with her family, and would babysit whenever she could to help family and friends.

Her hobbies were knitting and crocheting, and she kept everyone well supplied with slippers, blankets, mittens and doilies. She also loved puzzles, especially crossword and reading. Her children all remember the weekly Sunday drives that she held so dear.

Ann was predeceased by her husband of 40 years, Robert (Vern) Jackson; her father, Henry (Harry) Smith, and her mother, Catherine Smith; as well as five of her siblings: Jake, Jim, Charlie and Wilbur Smith and Dorothy Russell. She was also predeceased by her companion of many years, Bill Akitt, and by a special son-in-law, Terry McMaster.

Ann leaves to mourn, her sister Elsie (Jack) Smith of Vernon, B.C., and her seven children: Verna McMaster, Linda (Tim) Oczkowski, Cathy (Doug) Crook, Robert (Audrey) Jackson, Lorne (Cindy) Jackson, Don (Shannon) Jackson and Dixie (Bob) Millar, all residents of Pincher Creek. She also leaves to mourn, her 16 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

The memorial service was held at the Snodgrass Funeral Home in Pincher Creek on Nov. 7, 2015, with Pastor Andrew Craig officiating.

In lieu of flowers, those wishing may donate to their charity of choice in Ann’s memory.

The amazing story of Cpl. Voytek, the soldier bear

By Crowsnest Conservation BearSmart In 1942, troops from the 22nd Artillery Supply Company of the Polish 2nd Corps, stationed in Iran, adopted an orphan grizzly bear cub from the local boy who had found it. They improvised a way to feed the cub from an empty vodka bottle — filled with condensed milk diluted with a bit of water — and nursed him back to health.

Voytek, as the soldiers named the cub, travelled with the men, bonded with his adoptive caretakers, and in return provided a wonderful morale boost for the troops enduring many hardships and horrors.

Voytek grew into a gentle giant who was treated as one of their own, sharing their food, sleeping in their tents, and enjoying beer and cigarettes with the soldiers. The bear

learned to salute when greeted and would often walk on two legs like the soldiers when they had been ordered to march out.

When he was smaller, he would often ride in the front seat of transport vehicles as they moved to more distant locations, but eventually he rode in the back with supplies, where there was more room to lie down on the long journeys.

As the Polish army prepared to join Allied forces in Italy, the British High Command forbade any pets or animals in camp. The Polish army, accordingly, officially enlisted Voytek, assigning him a paybook, rank and serial number. The newest member of their company was waved aboard the ship and set sail across the Mediterranean Sea for the conflict in Europe.

Monte Cassino, a famous hilltop monastery in Italy, was a strategic

position in the Allies’ advance on Rome. Three previous assaults by Allied forces to dislodge the Germans had failed in bloody battles. In April 1944 the Polish army was sent in.

Voytek was chained to a supply truck and watched the soldiers moving the heavy boxes. Always eager to copy what the soldiers were doing, he stood up in front of the supervising officer with his front legs outstretched until he received a box himself. Thus he began his contribution by effortlessly carrying heavy shells, artillery boxes and food sacks from truck to truck or to the front lines.

Despite the sounds of gunfire and explosions all around, Voytek never dropped a single item and continued to serve, day after day, until Monte Cassino was finally captured. The image of a bear carrying an artillery shell subsequently became the symbol

of the 22nd Artillery Supply Company.

After the war was over, Voytek travelled with the Polish army to Scotland, where he became a local celebrity. People lined the streets to watch the soldier bear marching with his company. His post-army days were spent in the Edinburgh Zoo after the Polish army was demobilized and sent home.

It is said that until his death in 1963, Voytek would sometimes perk up when spoken to in Polish, and always enjoyed visits from his former comrades. Memorials and plaques to commemorate this soldier bear were placed in Warsaw, in Edinburgh, at the Imperial War Museum in London, and in the Canadian War Museum in Ottawa.

Send a shoebox of joy around the world with Operation Christmas Child

By Brad Quarin Thanksgiving and Halloween are over and, after Remembrance Day, many people’s thoughts will turn to Christmas.

We have the power to indulge not only our loved ones at Christmas but also the disadvantaged children of the world. This will be made easier with some help from the Nippon Institute of Technology in Blairmore and the Piltingsrud family in Pincher Creek.

NIT is once again co-ordinating Operation Christmas Child in Crowsnest Pass, with its Japanese students joining local residents to help pack shoeboxes with gifts.

“It’s a really nice family project,” says NIT instructor Cheryl Cann.

In Crowsnest Pass, shoeboxes can be picked up at Remedy’s Rx Pharmacy, Pharmasave, Turtle Mountain Pharmacy, Horace Allen School, Isabelle Sellon School, Copy Magic and Greyhound. Packed shoeboxes should be returned to those locations by Nov. 19.

The gifts will go to children aged two to 14.

Cheryl is unsure which countries the boxes will be sent to, but she knows they always go where they are needed and the children always appreciate them.

The Japanese students are getting involved, with requests for donations going to their homestay families and staff at the institute. They will also sort donated items into shoeboxes.

In Pincher Creek, Gary Piltingsrud and his

wife, Irene, have placed a shopping cart of shoeboxes in Ranchland Mall, with more shoeboxes available in churches.

They co-ordinate the “grassroots” effort independent of any organization, getting involved because there are more disadvantaged people in the world than privileged, Gary says. They have been doing this for five years.

After Good Samaritans have packed their shoeboxes, they should be returned to Crow Signs in the mall by Monday.

Toys, school supplies and hygiene items are good gifts, but food, used items, liquids, gels, standard playing cards or toy weapons should be avoided. Gary says the shoeboxes in Ranchland Mall come with pamphlets outlining what are and are not good gifts.

Last year, the Piltingsruds gathered 100 shoeboxes, and others in Pincher Creek may have sent more.

Cheryl feels they had a great variety of gifts last year. Altogether, 215 shoeboxes were packed, a number NIT hopes to beat this year.

A nice idea would be for families packing shoeboxes to include a family picture and a letter, and maybe an email address, but Cheryl advises against including any other address.

The Japanese students will include a group photo and a letter talking a little about themselves, and will also write that they hope the children enjoy their gifts.

Clothing Fest keeps growing, just like the children

By Brad Quarin Parents looking to clear out used children’s clothes that no longer fit, or to pick up larger sizes, will be interested in the Children’s Clothing Fest.

The annual swap, on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., is a collaboration of Crowsnest Pass Parent Link and Brighter Futures. Parents are encouraged to make their donations of gently used clothes before Friday afternoon.

“It grows every year,” says Pam Vamplew, Parent Link co-ordinator. “We’re looking forward to it.”

This year the Fest has moved to a new location: the gym in the M.D. McEachern Community Centre in Bellevue. The new venue will provide more space for the event. A municipal grant will help with the cost of the rent.

Parent Link and Brighter Futures are looking mainly for clothing for ages 12 and under, especially winter clothes like gloves, tuques, winter coats and boots. Sometimes the Clothing Fest also accepts toys, baby items and things for people beyond the stated age range.

Clothes and items can be dropped off at the Parent Link Centre in Horace Allen School during school hours, or at Brighter Futures at MDM. Pickup can also be arranged by calling Pam at 403-563-8157.
