Dunlop family history impacts another generation

By Brad Quarin In keeping with Crowsnest Pass custom, Remembrance Day wreaths were placed at the Dunlop Guns, which serve as the cenotaph for Frank.

The Dunlop Guns include a German howitzer and replicas of two Maxim machine guns from the First World War, obtained by Daniel Dunlop Sr. of Frank. He fought in the war and lost all three of his sons in the conflict.

However, this year was a very special occasion, as descendants Dan Dunlop and his son Daniel, from Prince George, visited Crowsnest Pass and laid their own wreath.

The day made an impression on Daniel, who is 12. He was born in Prince George and this was his first time in Crowsnest Pass.

“I think it’s pretty cool that I’m learning about my great-uncles and grandfathers that served in war for the country and for freedom,” he said.

Dan’s grandfather, also named Daniel, was one of the boys killed in the war, at the young age of 22. His grandfather was the only one of the Dunlop boys to have children.

The Dunlops were born in Scotland and arrived in Frank shortly after the Frank Slide occurred, Dan said.

Before the war, Dan’s grandfather was a boxer.

When war broke out, Daniel Dunlop Sr. was legally too old to fight, but Dan said he falsely claimed to be many years younger in order to enlist. Although born in 1867, he claimed to have been born in 1892.

The youngest Dunlop boy was only 15 when he died, having also doctored his age in order to join.

The three boys were all killed in Belgium, over a short period of 18 months.

Dan’s grandfather, one of the sons, was killed in Passchendaele in November 1917 when his stretcher was hit by a shell, and he was buried in an unknown grave.

Although Daniel Sr. survived the war, the loss of his three children aged him horribly, and he was placed in a hospital, Dan said.

After Dan’s grandfather’s death, his grandmother moved to Calgary and fell out of contact with the Dunlop family.

They were reunited later, when a cousin did a bit of research into family history, Dan said. He personally didn’t know until 30 years ago that his grandfather and great-uncles fought in the First World War. Interestingly, he had seen the Dunlop Guns 10 years before that, but without knowing the personal connection.

He feels the Dunlop Guns display wasn’t in great condition then. “It’s nice to see that it’s been restored,” he said.

Dan said that his visit was a good one and that the community was friendly.

Ian McKenzie, a member of Crowsnest Heritage Initiative, explains that at the end of the First World War, the victorious Allies collected and shared enemy weapons as trophies.

Frank applied for weapons as trophies and a national committee granted the request, despite the town’s small size. “I have to think it’s probably because of the personal sacrifice of the Dunlop family,” Ian says.

That sacrifice was indeed high, and certainly a notable piece of Frank’s heritage.

My Little Corner On Remembrance Day, we honoured those who have fought for the freedom we enjoy as Canadian citizens.

For me, it was a day of quiet contemplation as I thought about many things.

My grandfather was a veteran of the First World War, and the nightmares that followed him home ruined his life and separated him from his family.

I chatted online with several of my cousins that afternoon and learned that one didn’t even know our grandfather’s name. It brought me to tears to realize that this veteran, Stanley Robison, has been forgotten to some members of his own family.

For the past three years I have also reflected on an experience that left me a bit disconcerted.

On the 11th minute of the 11th hour of the 11th month of 2011, my daughter and I were in Paris. At that moment, we were touring the Louvre. I checked my watch many times, waiting for something to happen.

Our red poppies stood out as oddities and we were lost in a sea of people more interested in seeing the Mona Lisa than in remembering a moment of sacrifice and history.

I thought surely a voice would come over the loudspeaker to announce a minute of silence. It didn’t happen and,

effectively, soldiers who lost their lives or came home with tormented minds and battered bodies from places such as Vimy Ridge, were also forgotten. I have not forgotten and, with each year that passes, the memory troubles me more.

On Friday, terrorism hit Paris again with a deadly toll. Media sources buzzed with photos and commentary, and around the world there was outrage.

United States president Barack Obama claimed it was an “attack against the civilized world.”

I heard it once and thought he was right. I heard it again and wrote it down.

The third time I started wondering about the “uncivilized world.” The countries where the atrocities of war are everyday occurrences and terror is one’s next-door neighbour.

More than 40 people were killed in suicide bombings in Beirut, Lebanon, the previous day, but this did not incite the fury of the world. Did anyone sing John Lennon’s “Imagine” at monuments to the dead? I hope someone did.

Paris appeals to us. It’s a destination we romanticize and one where many of us have been or hope to go one day. There are people from and with ties to our communities who were there on Friday. From one “civilized” country to another there is a

connection, and it seems easier to grieve with Paris than with Lebanon and Iraq.

If you are inclined, spend a few minutes browsing a list of the lives lost to terrorism this year alone. It is frightening.

Here is a link: https://en.wikipedia.org/ wiki/List_of_terrorist_incidents,_2015 It must be a grim job to update this list as the numbers are staggering. Every statistic matters — the lives of all people lost to war and terrorism in any way should matter to each of us.

When world news is too depressing I simply turn it off. Families and friends of victims of terrorism cannot do this. Neither can those who witness these events.

Hatred and fear mongering are tactics of terror. Social media has made it easy to share messages that may, or may not, have any factual basis.

My head is full of cliches as I try to close my column with something profound. I can’t find the words to express the weight I feel in my heart and the small knot of fear that resides in my belly.

I felt safe when we visited Paris. I feel safe in my community and in my country, yet there is a sense of uneasiness that troubles my mind.

I hope I find the courage to visit Paris again and to stroll her streets without fear.

COW Bus ‘mooving’ to Pincher Creek and Bellevue

By Brad Quarin After years without a giant Holstein sighting in Pincher Creek and Crowsnest Pass, the COW Bus is “mooving” back to town next week.

The Alberta Prairie Classroom on Wheels, also known as the COW Bus, was last seen in our area in March 2014, when it visited Napi’s Playground Elementary School in Brocket.

The mobile classroom belongs to the Centre for Family Literacy in Edmonton and visits communities around the province to promote family literacy. The COW Bus brings books and activities for the benefit of families with children aged six and under.

In Pincher Creek, the bus will roll in to Ranchland Mall next Tuesday at 10 a.m. and stay until noon. It will then move to the Pincher Creek and District Municipal Library from 1 to 3 p.m. and Children’s World Daycare from 3:30 to 6 p.m.

Monica Sczyrba-Davis and Annie Steward at the Pincher Creek Community Adult Learning Council say they’ve been talking for a couple of years about bringing the COW Bus back to town. They thought it would be a good way to encourage literacy in local families, so Annie worked to plan the bus’s stops in numerous nearby communities, Monica says.

With help from local businesses, they also made sure the COW Bus facilitators would have places to stay and eat in Pincher Creek.

The council partnered with Parent Link, the library and Children’s World Daycare to arrange the visit, to make sure more members of the community would benefit, Monica says.

For Parent Link, the COW Bus is “a natural fit,” and the bus will be visible on Main Street while visiting the library, she says.

The COW Bus also donates a small library of children’s books to the communities it visits. The books in Pincher Creek will probably be divided between the municipal library, the Parent Link Centre and Children’s World Daycare.

On Thursday, Nov. 26, the COW Bus will stop by M.D. McEachern Community Centre in Bellevue from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

The Early Childhood Development Coalition chose to welcome the bus to Crowsnest Pass for its fun ideas in teaching the value of literacy, says chairwoman Kayla Parkins.

At the same time, the coalition will have children’s entertainer Mary Lambert lead a pyjama party at 10 a.m. at MDM. Parents and children can attend in their pyjamas, bringing blankets. At 4:30 p.m., families will have the opportunity to dress up, use available props and put on a show.

The 40 books from the COW Bus will probably be divided among the members of the coalition, including Crowsnest Pass Parent Link, Brighter Futures and Crowsnest Community Library, Kayla says.

Together, the events and activities in Pincher Creek and Crowsnest Pass will highlight the importance of literacy and play.

Community group does good work

By Brad Quarin Many Pincher Creek residents will be dancing with angels this Saturday at the annual Angels Within Us dinner and fundraiser.

The event gives wings to the organization, which assists community members in times of need. Often, in doing so, the group makes new friends who, in turn, support its efforts.

“It’s a circle within the community. You want to help your friends,” says Sherry Mackenzie, co-founder and president of Angels Within Us. Last year, the dinner and dance raised $70,000, and this year, the group hasn’t had to turn away any appeals for help for financial reasons, she says.

In the past year, the group spent around $50,000 to help 12 families.

Angels Within Us takes a lot of effort, but a particularly rewarding aspect is meeting the beneficiaries and how grateful they can be, Sherry says.

Among the cases that touched Sherry the most was that of Nikki Gross, who needed financial assistance while undergoing cancer treatments.

“She’s a neat little young lady,” says Sherry, who

was impressed most by Nikki’s “outlook and her optimism.”

Nikki works at the Pincher Creek Health Centre and has received a lot of help from her friends and co-workers, who gave Angels Within Us a call when her situation got even tougher.

Angels Within Us also bought a special bed for a Vista Village resident. This bed can circulate air and massage this resident, thus helping her to avoid bedsores, Sherry says.

The group built house decks for those in wheelchairs and helped cover other medical expenses.

Quilt shop opens in Pincher Creek

By Brad Quarin Quilters of Pincher Creek and area, rejoice! A new resource has opened on Main Street — the Dragons Heart Quilt Shop.

The shop aims to be “a place where people can come and get the product they need,” says owner Lynn Brasnett. “[I] saw a need. We have lots of quilters in the area.”

The store offers fabrics, threads, notions and patterns, along with classes on how to quilt. Other services include fixing sewing machines and ordering custom-made quilts.

The unusual name stems from the nickname “the Dragon,” given to Lynn by her husband. She made a quilt sporting a dragon around 16 years ago that now serves as the store’s logo.

Lynn taught herself how to quilt 35 years ago, creating a baby quilt for her newborn daughter. She describes the original quilt as simple, but says she has learned more since.

She acquired the building across from her other business, Four Winds Real Estate, in mid August, and has been busy with renovations.

It has been a challenge to bring in and arrange inventory, says Lynn. She was able to buy out a store in Olds and transport the products to Pincher Creek. Since then, she has arranged and rearranged the products several times.

Dragons Heart Quilt Shop opened in late October, with help from staff member Jenny Root and a few part-time employees.

For beginners and others hoping to build their quilting skills, children are welcome to classes on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings. Adults will have Quilting 101 a couple times per month for learning the basics.

The open sews on Tuesdays and Thursdays will allow quilters to sew and socialize from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

This weekend, the shop will have a Christmas-themed Super Saturday, in which people can come and purchase kits to make stockings, tree skirts and scarves.

Also in time for Christmas, Dragons Heart Quilt Shop will be offering wives’ wish lists. Women can make lists of products from Dragons Heart that they would like to have. Husbands can choose gifts from this list, and the store will package the products for them.

The store will be open from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Tuesdays to Fridays, and on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sometimes, staff are in the shop on Sundays and Mondays.

“If the lights are on, we’ll let you in,” Lynn says with a laugh.

Buildings reflect Crowsnest Pass history

By Brad Quarin A process to discover heritage buildings and houses in Hillcrest and Bellevue yielded a list of 36 structures, all with potential for designation as municipal heritage buildings.

A second open house in Phase 3 of the Heritage Inventory Project was held at the end of October, in which the narrowed-down list was made public.

“It’s a good mix of residential buildings and commercial buildings in both communities, and a good mix of everything from very simple early miners’ accommodations to more elaborate homes owned by senior management officials,” says Robert Earley, a planner with Community Design Strategies.

In this open house, the Municipal Heritage Board also reached out to the property owners who might have valuable input to add to the historical significance of their buildings, he says.

Heritage designation is intended to ensure that renovations or changes to buildings preserve their historic value, while potentially making government grants available to owners.

A building may be of interest for historical, architectural, scientific or cultural reasons. The Heritage Inventory Project looked at historic buildings in Blairmore and Frank last year and Coleman before that.

In narrowing the list of potential heritage buildings, the selection committee looked for integrity in the preservation of the original architecture, Robert says. In this matter, they focused on the outside of the structures.

The final list has 25 Bellevue structures and 11 from Hillcrest, which reflects Bellevue’s larger size, he says.

The owners of one potential heritage building in Hillcrest, the former United church, feel a responsibility to keep the exterior the same, says Ian McKenzie.

He and Lynnette Jessop have been renovating the inside, which has taken a lot of work, but they are satisfied with the result. Lynnette finds the outside of this former church to be especially beautiful and this led to their decision to preserve the exterior.

It was built in 1910 and signifies spirituality to residents of Hillcrest.

Other buildings selected as heritage buildings are the Bellevue Inn, which was built by West Canadian Collieries in 1922, and the Bellevue Legion, built by prominent Crowsnest Pass contractor Enrico Pozzi.

Another possible heritage site is the Bellevue Restaurant, which was the scene of a fatal shootout between train robbers and Alberta Provincial Police in 1920.

The Pozzi residence in Bellevue, also on the list, stayed with the family for over 70 years, while the familiar Mohawk Tipple on Highway 3 reflects mining history. The West Canadian Collieries boarding house, another possibility, was home to unmarried miners after 1910.

Another potential candidate is the Emmerson Building, better known as the Old Dairy Ice Cream Shoppe, which was built in 1922 and reflects Bellevue’s retail history. It was home to Pass Dairy.

The final open house will be in December, but Fred Bradley, a member of the Crowsnest Pass Municipal Historic Resources Board, says heritage inventories may continue as more buildings come to light.

Haunted Hotel draws from the past

By Brad Quarin Guests and ghosts alike enjoyed exploring the Haunted Hotel, set up in Coleman’s Grand Union Hotel during Halloween and Pumpkins in the Park.

“It was a wonderful response, and people were appreciative,” says owner Glory-Jo Galicia. She had 130 people visit, and looks forward to seeing them again next year.

The Haunted Hotel also took food and cash donations for the Crowsnest Pass and Pincher Creek food banks.

Glory-Jo hopes this response will inspire more charity when Christmas comes.

This year’s Haunted Hotel had a ghoulish wedding theme, with freaky guests and a gory banquet. Visitors could readily see how much work this creation had required, and Glory-Jo gives the thanks for that to her volunteers.

She had the idea of making this year a black wedding, basing it on a true story from Grand Union Hotel’s past. A dentist who worked in the building killed a woman who married another man rather than himself. Since then, a mysterious bride has been spotted in Grand Union Hotel from time to time.

“There is a lot of history,” Glory-Jo says. She feels privileged to bring public awareness to these past events.

’Tis the season for giving

By Erin Fairhurst The Crowsnest Pass Women’s Resource Centre is in the midst of its busiest season of the year.

Co-ordinator Desiree Simoneau says that while things are going well so far, she expects the need for donations to increase as Old Man Winter continues to raise his head.

“Our Coats for Kids program is going awesome,” Desiree says. “Although, really it should be called Coats for Families, as we are in need of coats and winter wear for adults and teens as well.”

Winter boots are also a high-demand item.

Donations are gratefully accepted, and can be made directly to the Women’s Resource Centre or dropped off at the Stone’s Throw Café.

“The Stone’s Throw Café plays a huge role in Coats for Kids,” says Desiree, “and they contribute to a massive increase in donations.”

The toy hamper program is also in full swing, with donation boxes set up at several businesses throughout the community.

“All of the banks are participating, the Blairmore and Bellevue post offices, Sears, Stone’s Throw Café, the Catholic church and the Remedy Rx in Coleman,” says Desiree, adding that last year 128 hampers were collected.

but Desiree says they are often short on gifts suitable for teenagers.

“Typically we work with the families in need to match the best donations,” she says. “If I know that Little Johnny has his heart set on Lego, then I’ll do my best to make sure he gets it.”

Toys should be new, and Desiree says people are welcome to check with her to see what types of items are needed.

“Our goal is to make Christmas less stressful for families in need, and to just make it nice for them.

In some cases, the gifts that people receive through donations are the only things they’ll be getting.”

Desiree says one of the best gifts that can be given over the holiday season is the gift of kindness. “You just never know what someone is going through,” she says. “People in need aren’t drug addicts or gamblers — they are real people with real life issues.”

The Women’s Resource Centre is located on the second floor of the Provincial Building in Blairmore.

New bantam team takes to the ice

By Brad Quarin Young hockey players from Crowsnest Pass and Pincher Creek have joined forces and entered the Central Alberta Hockey League.

The unprecedented partnership between the two communities will allow players to take turns practising and playing in the two local arenas, without having to travel long distances each time.

“Through this co-operation … kids and families will see that maybe they can handle the commitment of hockey,” says Bill Wilmot, president of Crowsnest Pass Minor Hockey.

The partnership was formed when bantam and midget minor hockey players in the two communities found themselves with no league. The Spud League currently does not have those levels.

Pincher Creek had enough players for a midget team and Crowsnest Pass had enough for bantam, so the two towns applied to the Central Alberta Hockey League as a joint venture.

The idea arose out of necessity, and was no one person’s idea, Bill says.

Fifteen youth from each community are now in the joint midget and bantam teams.

The Huskies are the midget team, for players born between 1998 and 2000. They are mainly from Pincher Creek.

The nameless bantam team is mainly from Crowsnest Pass, and is for players born between 2001 and 2002.

While youth from one town have played in the other before, this agreement is unique in that teams will practise in both communities, Bill says.

Having to travel long distances for every practice is one of the reasons why participation in hockey drops among older youth, he says. Hopefully, this will make participation a little easier for families.

Bantam and midget minor hockey is fairly competitive. In the Central Alberta Hockey League, the Crowsnest Pass and Pincher Creek teams will together face teams from an area that stretches to Red Deer.

While teams have formed for this year, youth interested in joining the teams in the future can contact their community’s minor hockey association.

Chinook 4-H Multi Club report

Whispers from the Winds – seniors news Submitted by Sally Marcellus of Whispering Winds Village It’s been a busy autumn here with beautiful colours, the warm heat of the sun and, of course, our “fall breezes.” We don’t complain, as we know these breezes give us many benefits.

Our September crib tournament was well attended with seven tables and some players from outside of Whispering Winds. As usual, the lunch was delicious. There were several winners, including one of our residents, Carolyn, who had a 28 hand. A social time ended the tournament with coffee and snacks. Fun day!

Bingo is every Friday night, with the exception of the last Monday of every month, when it is held in the afternoon. We had 10 players from York Creek Lodge in Blairmore on Sept. 28. There were five winners from Crowsnest Pass, two from the town and two from here at the Winds.

Dave Cox from the fire department came one afternoon and his visit was very interesting and informative. Several residents had questions of concern, which he helped answer, regarding fire drills and evacuation procedures.

Margaret Cox made a visit with members of the fire department, who checked blood pressures.

As well as passing out the “green sleeves,” they explained the different meanings of emergency care when they are called.

Most residents feel we are very fortunate to have the health-care system we have here in Pincher Creek, of which our emergency members are a part. We do appreciate that they take the time to come here for these sessions.

We also had our flu shots in-house, which helps our residents.

Our big highlight of this month was learning that our own Laurie Burke was named the employee of the year for all 12 Golden Life Management facilities in British Columbia and Alberta, including Whispering Winds. This was out of 1,200 employees in total.

We had a celebration including cake, and Laurie received a commendation as well as gifts and recognition from the CEO and all of us here. We appreciate Laurie and the many hats she wears in her various jobs taking care of us. Congratulations, Laurie!

Halloween was great — Children’s World came twice. Wow! The costumes were wonderful and the children introduced themselves and sang for us. This was a real highlight of Halloween week for us. In the afternoon a young lad and his mother arrived with cookies he had made for us. Thank you, Adam, the cookies were delicious.

We finished off with Orange Blossom Special entertaining at a party, for which some of our residents as well as staff dressed up. What a hoot! A good time was had by all.

For November we have planned a resident craft and bake sale on Saturday, Nov. 21, starting at 10 a.m. Our crafters have been knitting and crocheting like mad. We hope to have a good response.

Nov. 24 will be our final crib tournament of 2015.

Posters will go up soon and preregistration is necessary. We always have a fun day, with lunch included.

I was told by someone that there were only 54 sleeps till Santa’s coming, so we are all on our best behaviour here — something to think about!

Host a Mystery Party Night Growing up, my sisters and I were hooked on Nancy Drew mystery books. We loved them so much that our mom started giving us Nancy Drew mystery-themed birthday parties.

As an adult, my love of entertaining, combined with my background in creative writing, inspired me to write a murder mystery party for a group of friends one Halloween. The party was such a hit that I then wrote and designed a whole series of murder mystery party games so that others could host their own mystery parties from the comfort of their own homes.

Learn about family wellness over lunch

By Brad Quarin Pack your lunch and join a session on helping families thrive. A number of speakers are coming to Pincher Creek next week for the aptly named Brown Bag Lunch Series.

The sessions aim to emphasize family and individual well-being, beyond simply surviving.

“Thriving is feeling vibrant, feeling good about what’s happening in our home, feeling physically and emotionally well,” says Janne Aikins, child life specialist and family support worker.

The sessions are free to attend and open to residents of Pincher Creek, Crowsnest Pass and the Piikani Nation who have an interest in “adult discussions” on topics such as child development or family wellness.

The Brown Bag Lunch Series is new, growing out of the Three Rivers Domestic Violence Action Team, a community group that spreads awareness of domestic violence.

Janne was a member of this group, and observed a conference on this subject in 2013.

She believes there is “a continuum” from healthy family development, to times when “life falls off the rails,” to escalation, where domestic violence occurs. She hopes to promote more healthy family development.

The first session on Monday will see Janne and a colleague talk about strengthening families. On Tuesday, “a very dynamic” member of the Alberta Family Wellness Initiative will talk about how a child’s brain develops and how to give the child a good mental foundation.

On the third day, Michael Merz will speak about dads and helping men manage thoughts and emotions. Dads have to take care of themselves to help others, and are often overlooked in parenting, Janne says.

The effects of domestic violence on children will be the focus of the fourth day, while Day 5 will

look at the services of the Pincher Creek Women’s Emergency Shelter.

While attendees can bring their own lunches, coffee, tea, fruits and snacks will be provided.

All of the sessions will be held in the boardroom of the Pincher Creek Provincial Building, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Everyone is welcome at CCS annual general meeting Submitted by Crowsnest Conservation Society In preparation for its 2015 annual general meeting, Crowsnest Conservation Society is reflecting on the work it undertook in the past year, the contributions of its volunteers and the support it received from the local community.

CCS once again funded the delivery of Wildsight’s environmental education program, Classroom With Outdoors, to all students in grades 4 to 6 at Isabelle Sellon School. To meet its objective of promoting awareness and enjoyment of the unique natural heritage of the Crowsnest Pass among residents and visitors, CCS organized connecting-with-nature events, including hikes, birdwatching activities, species counts and presentations.

This is the ninth year the society has promoted the Alberta BearSmart mandate through education and attractant-management initiatives. This year’s work was supported again by a Shell FuellingChange grant, originally procured as part of a nationwide voting process. Because of the amazing support received from the local community during online voting, CCS has in return been able to provide significant local BearSmart programming with these funds.

Education remained a key focus and was undertaken using various formats, which included: — Weekly newspaper articles and cartoons throughout the fall bear season that addressed topics of bear biology, bear safety and attractant management.

— Social media outreach.

— Curriculum-linked presentations to all Grade 1 and Grade 4/5 classes in Crowsnest Pass.

— Trail-side bear awareness and safety training workshops for small groups.

— Indoor presentations to various other community organizations.

— One-on-one consultations with residents.

Attractant management work involved bear-resistant garbage bin loans and sales, the ever-popular Apple Network, and Apple Roundups with school-aged kids, including a new Apple Mashup component to demonstrate how to use local apples in fresh applesauce and juice. Fun was had, mess was made and apple products were enjoyed by all students!

Santa Claus is coming to town for Countdown to Christmas

By Brad Quarin It’s time to welcome the Christmas season, with a little help from the Pincher Creek and District Chamber of Commerce, the town, and Santa himself.

The Countdown to Christmas starts in Pincher Creek on Friday, with a blizzard of fun activities and holiday shopping.

The annual event received a makeover last year, and this year will continue with these new additions, says chamber administrator Lieve Parisis.

Businesses can get into the spirit of the season by decorating for the Parade of Lights, which starts at 6:15 p.m.

The chamber asks for registrations, but if anyone misses the boat they can simply show up at the Ranchland Mall parking lot between 5:30 and 6 p.m. The entries will be judged for prizes, which are gift certificates.

Families can enjoy a free swim at the Pincher Creek pool from 5 to 7 p.m., and free skating at the arena from 6:15 to 7:15 p.m.

The town has been co-operating with the chamber to make this happen, says Marie Everts, events marketing and economic development officer.

The swim is sponsored by TransAlta, and the skate, by the Pincher Creek Legion, LED in Action and BMT Construction.

The town is also closing the streets for the parade and arranging for a DJ on Main Street. “We’re very supportive of the whole event,” Marie says.

Pincher Creek Allied Arts will be doing its part in the festivities, with doors open from noon to midnight for the Maker Market, a chance to pick up a handmade item for Christmas. A Painting Jam will run from 4 p.m. to midnight and the Little Big Band will perform at 7 p.m.

The Kids Carnival will be back on Main Street from 7 to 8:30 p.m., with Children’s World Daycare taking responsibility for it this year, Lieve says. There will be games and most of the carnival will be free.

At 8:30 p.m., there will be a balloon drop at Ranchland Mall.

To try to catch a balloon, an adult needs to pay $2 and a child can pay 25 cents, with the ticket sales going to community Christmas hampers.

Of course, Christmas shopping is a key aspect of Countdown to Christmas. Over two weeks, shoppers can carry passports to be stamped when they enter a participating business and stamped again when they make a purchase. Double stamps will be offered on Friday. Passports are later entered into a draw for gift cards.

That’s just a few reasons to be jolly about the upcoming holiday.
