Steer wrestler takes second place at Indian National Finals Rodeo

By Brad Quarin Steer wrestling and rodeo are fundamental to Otys Little Mustache.

“It’s a part of me,” he says. “It’s something I’m trained to do.”

The Piikani Nation resident grew up in what he calls a “horse culture,” having ridden horses “forever.” It’s the family’s way of life.

His dad participated in rodeo, in almost every event, including steer wrestling and team roping, he says. His brothers participate, too.

From those beginnings, Otys has gone far, recently finishing second overall in steer wrestling at the Indian National Finals Rodeo. He also usually competes in pro rodeo.

The Indian National Finals Rodeo was held in Las Vegas in early November.

“It went pretty good,” he says. “It’s hard to ask for more.”

In Las Vegas, he was up against 30 aboriginal people from around North America, including Florida, California and Alberta. Despite the travel distance, Otys thought there was a good turnout of aboriginal athletes from Canada.

After finishing in 11th place last year, getting to Las Vegas was important to him this year and he was in “high gear.”

In steer wrestling, he had an average time of 21.47 seconds, behind only Casey Stone, who averaged 19.71 seconds.

This is despite an injury last June that shortened Otys’s run on the pro rodeo circuit. He describes

a steer jumping up and landing on his right knee, something he can still feel.

It meant he spent the summer in physiotherapy with his knee taped up. He decided he couldn’t give 100 per cent to pro rodeo, but he was already in the Tour Rodeo and didn’t see dropping out as an option.

He wound up placing second in the rodeo at the end of June, right after the injury.

In better circumstances, Otys says, he is able to balance pro rodeo as well as other circuits.

Scheduling usually allows him to participate in pro rodeo events on Thursdays and Fridays, with enough time to get to smaller rodeos on Saturdays and Sundays. It’s the smaller events that command most of his time.

To be part of the Indian National Finals Rodeo this year, Otys was supported through funding from chief and council, Piikani Youth and Education and Traditional Knowledge Services.

Many other members of the Piikani and Pincher Creek communities have shown interest in his rodeo career, regularly asking him what’s new.

He thanks them, as well.

From here, he hopes to get a full pro card, which can be filled out after participating in specific events.

While Otys feels he doesn’t have the resources to get to a national finals pro rodeo, he would love to be invited one day to compete in the Calgary Stampede.

was hard,” says Niki. “But I know he’ll be back in full force soon.”

Niki says things won’t be slowing down for the Flundra family anytime soon — but that’s OK. “It seems like it never slows down at the ranch,” she says, “but it’s been an awesome year.”

My Little Corner It’s beginning to look, and feel, a lot like Christmas. For me, the feeling is brought on when people come together in song.

My personal moment came Friday evening while singing “Silent Night.” The lights were dimmed and, with candles in hand, friends, neighbours and strangers raised their voices as one in a familiar tune.

To where I sat in the front pew of Knox Presbyterian Church at Heritage Acres, the harmonies came forward and warmed my heart. It was the best moment of the evening.

Music is something we can all share in, and its value increases when financial times are tough.

Jessica Jensen is our staff member who is always first to volunteer to put up seasonal decorations. Last week we were together in the office basement, looking for the Christmas box, and wound up looking through the huge stash of teaching supplies I brought when I moved here.

“What the heck is this?” she asked while holding up a boom-

whacker. As I explained how I had used the eclectic collection of stuff in my work as a very hands-on music teacher, we both noticed how excited I was to be talking about it.

For 15 years I made music every day with kids from two to 92. I sang, I danced, I played multiple instruments and I loved what I did.

I love what I do now, but during that discussion I realized that I had given up one for the other.

In the last six years my fingers have become arthritic, my vocal range has diminished and it takes a lot of prodding to get me to play or sing anything because I feel I’m no longer good enough. My musicianship is getting rusty and dusty along with my stash of goodies in the basement.

I took my favourite guitar to a party on the weekend. The playing didn’t begin until the crowd had thinned, and my nervousness was relieved by that. I sang hesitantly and strummed quietly at first.

though it’s been a long time since I’ve had a guitar in hand. It was also natural to slip into teacher mode and share a few things.

About five hours later, with sore fingers and a voice beginning to go hoarse, I was on my way home.

I left the guitar behind for the hosts’ daughter to experiment with.

It’s a beautiful instrument that fits her well. That afternoon I also gifted a fancy ukelele to a young man who will make great use of an instrument that had been collecting dust in my closet.

About 35 years ago, a friend of my dad’s trusted me to try out his brand new banjo. I saw him last summer and he said it’s something he’s never forgotten. He shared his love of music with a little kid, and fanned small sparks that already existed into a passionate fire for music. It was a wonderful gift.

I’m grateful for the friends who nudged me out of my comfort zone.

Sometimes we need reminders of the gifts we have within us to share.

Crowsnest Dental hosts festive grand opening

By Brad Quarin While the Crowsnest Pass Boys and Girls Club carolled in the lobby, Crowsnest Dental office manager Cheryl Oczkowski gave tours of the clinic’s new building on Friday.

The grand opening of Crowsnest Dental Complex in Blairmore came just in time for Christmas in the Mountains. It definitely made for a merry Christmas for both Crowsnest Dental and the Boys and Girls Club.

Cheryl said the staff is adapting well to the new building. “We’re enjoying having a much larger area to work in and having the opportunity to present to the community the state-of-the-art clinic, to offer the best possible dental service.”

The new building was designed to accommodate updated X-ray equipment and has 10 operatories, where the cleanings and fillings happen. This means they can handle more patients at a time.

Feedback during the tours was also good. “They love the feel of the open windows,” Cheryl said. While the grand opening took place in the evening, she said that during the day Crowsnest Dental Complex has a great view.

Crowsnest Dental also wanted to support an organization during its grand opening, and chose the Boys and Girls Club for what it gives to the community’s youth.

Each person who attended the grand opening was able to enter a draw for a wreath by making a donation, Cheryl said.

Karey Lee Watanabe, program director for the club, said the call came from out of the blue and it was appreciated.

The club doesn’t do much carolling, and while there was some stage fright, Karey was proud of how the children did.

Altogether, 150 people attended the grand opening, and $125 was raised for the club, plus a matching donation from Crowsnest Dental.

Castle Mountain offers adventures in tourism

By Brad Quarin Fresh from victory in the Southwest Service and Tourism Awards, Castle Mountain Resort will open for the skiing season on Friday.

For the first time, the Chinook Country Tourist Association in Lethbridge honoured Castle Mountain Resort in October with the award for adventure tourism.

“We’re really proud of our staff,” says Jason Crawford, sales and marketing manager. Running the resort takes the whole crew of 150 people, and they are an “authentic, passionate group of skiers.”

The awards are given out to encourage the service and tourism industry to continue promoting southwestern Alberta as a delightful place to

visit and live. Their area of interest extends from Okotoks to Milk River and the British Columbia border.

The adventure tourism award specifically recognizes great service and the promotion of adventure travel for visitors.

Great service at Castle Mountain is a product of the staff being proud of their work, Jason says.

When the crew loves what it does, skiers and snowboarders see that and it draws them in.

Employees at all levels make this possible, from food and beverage managers providing culinary quality, to instructors who love the slopes.

Past employees like Marie Everts also contributed to building a customer base, Jason says. The chamber of commerce named Marie this year’s Pincher Creek employee of the year for her work

at the resort.

The adventure is found in the skiing and snowboarding, from learning to ski to tackling the deep steeps.

He says Castle Mountain Resort provides an excellent ski hill and terrain, as well as cat skiing, which is unique for a resort. Cat skiing uses grooming machines to open the backcountry.

Castle Mountain can be a different experience for each skier. Some will come for cat skiing while others are looking for powder. The resort also has ideal terrain for beginners, Jason says.

Besides its staff, Castle Mountain Resort thanks the skiers and snowboarders who keep returning, Jason says. Indeed, the customers are why the staff does what it does.

This year, patrons of Castle Mountain can look forward to newly cleaned trails, making them more open and fun, says Jason. He adds that the high trails already have a lot of snow.

The resort will be open until April 3, but the season could be extended if the snow and customers keep coming.

Fashion and inspiration meet on the runway

By Erin Fairhurst Denise Busato was named the 2015 Woman of Inspiration at the annual Neat ’n Nifty fashion show, held last month at the Bamboo Bistro in Blairmore.

Denise, who also modelled in the show, was called a “shining star” for the courageous and positive attitude she demonstrated while battling cancer last year.

Anita Ferguson, owner of Neat ’n Nifty, was on hand to present Denise with her award, and both women were visibly moved by the occasion. Denise gratefully accepted the honour, saying she was equally inspired by all of the women she had modelled with in Anita’s fashion shows.

“It’s because of all of you and the friendships that I’ve made that I’m here,” she said.

Blue Christmas service offers comfort this season

By Brad Quarin Those who feel a little lost this season may find some comfort in the Blue Christmas service, taking place Saturday at the former Foothills Community Church in Pincher Creek.

The service offers support for individuals and families who have lost a loved one or lost hope for any other reason.

“It’s so people can remember … with hope,” says pastor Chris Ney, who will be leading the service. He arrived in the community in September and is based in the new church located in the Foothills Community Church building.

The service is sponsored by Eden’s Funeral Home, Snodgrass Funeral Home and the Pincher Creek Ministerial Association, which is made up of church leaders from the community.

The funeral homes invite families they served in the last year to the event, says Michelle Dobek-Koinberg, apprentice funeral director with Snodgrass.

The service will consist of music and a slideshow, she explains, featuring the departed of Pincher Creek and district and the Piikani Nation.

There will be a fellowship afterwards, with coffee and baked goods.

The event is an opportunity for people to meet and talk to ministers they may have only heard of, Michelle says.

Each family that has lost a loved one will receive a candle to burn over the season, courtesy of the funeral homes, she says.

Chris says they will also be given a ribbon to tie to the Christmas tree outside the church, which will be lit with blue lights.

The service isn’t meant for the bereaved only. Someone who has lost a job or experienced some other pain may find comfort in it.

In Crowsnest Pass, Fantin’s Funeral Chapel hosted its Blue Christmas service last weekend.

Darrell Sydora, co-owner of Fantin’s, says this year’s Blue Christmas was particularly important because of the tragedies that shook the community this year.

Despite the tribulation, the service was geared to explaining why Christmas should be celebrated, not shunned, he says. Our departed loved ones will still be in our thoughts during the celebrations.

Children’s World Daycare plans rockin’ fundraiser

By Brad Quarin Children’s World Daycare in Pincher Creek will benefit from ticket sales to a classic rock performance this month at Excuses Tavern in the Alberta Hotel.

The southern Alberta band WOMP will play at Excuses on Dec. 19, with Leo’s Pub and Grill covering all the expenses. This allows the ticket sales to go directly to the daycare.

“We’re very grateful and thankful for the support that we get from the community,” says Marie Meckelborg, director of Children’s World Daycare.

David McQuaig, the owner of both Leo’s Pub and Grill and Excuses Tavern, is pleased to support the event.

It’s a good way to give back to the community, and moreover, WOMP is a great band that moves people to get up and dance, he says. Excuses Tavern has hosted them twice before.

The selection of the band is all the more appropriate given that one of its members is Doug Sokoloski, a Mountie who was previously based in the Pincher Creek area. A YouTube video of Doug drumming with campers went viral in 2012.

“It’s exciting to have him back,” Marie says.

“We are looking forward to playing classic rock dance tunes for the always fun patrons in Pincher Creek,” Doug says.

The goal is to raise $6,000 for new programming and equipment for the daycare. They have already raised $3,500 by selling flowers and managing a concession at the trade show, by holding a kids carnival at the rodeo and through face painting at Kootenai Brown Pioneer Village.

The money will go to winter equipment like sleds and toboggans and children’s furniture for the reading room, Marie says. In the winter, the daycare uses the gym less, so more outside activities and equipment are desirable.

Children’s World Daycare also needs crafting supplies like glue and paint every year, which cost between $300 and $400.

Tickets are available at Children’s World Daycare until they sell out. The daycare hopes to sell 125 in advance and 25 at the door, Marie says.

Tickets are $10 in advance and $15 at the door, and can be acquired in advance by contacting any board or staff member listed on the daycare’s parent information board.

CLIMBING, continued from page 12 Lindsay says she is open to ideas and suggestions about the direction of the club, and is keen to work with other interested groups in order to get things off the ground — no pun intended.

She is also working with the Municipality of Crowsnest Pass and would like to see the indoor climbing wall, which is located at the Albert Stella Arena in Blairmore, better utilized. A big part of getting the wall open for more climbers, is to certify more people as belayers.

“Of course we want to ensure that things are done properly and that certifications are in place,” says Lindsay, adding that a belay course was held at the wall earlier this month and that more will take place in the future.

Ultimately, the club’s aim is simply to bring new and experienced climbers together. “There seems to be a lot of interest,” says Lindsay, “and we just need to channel that interest and see where we can take it.”

Verne Dennis 1935 – 2015

With great sadness and a heavy heart we announce the passing of Verne Dennis, beloved husband, for 60 years, of Ida. Verne passed away Nov. 26 in his home, surrounded by his loving family.

He is survived by his wife, Ida; his children, Val (Shelley), Fayra (Rick), Tim (Jo), Kelly (Don), Cathy (Tony), Wally (Nicole); 19 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

On March 4, 1935, Verne was born to Florence and Percy Dennis of Maycroft. He grew up on the family ranch with his brothers, Bob, Mickey, Buddy and Spike. Verne attended Olds College to study agriculture for two years before returning home.

Verne met Ida at a spring dance at the Maycroft Hall, and they were married Nov. 19, 1955. They continued to live at the Dennis family ranch in Maycroft, where they raised their family of six children.

Besides his love of ranching, he was an avid sportsman, but his

deepest passion was fishing. His generous spirit involved him in many organizations and causes within the Maycroft community.

He drove a school bus for the Pincher Creek School Division for 28 years and he was a proud member of Chinook Masonic Lodge for over 50.

Above all, Verne’s biggest love was for his family — his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He passed on his love of the ranch life to everyone who loved him. He will be sadly missed.

At Verne’s request, there will be a private family memorial.

Verne was grateful for all the care and support provided by the Crowsnest Pass hospital’s doctors, nurses and staff.

Lawrence Knuckey Dyer a.k.a. Friendly Frog or Knuck 1940 – 2015

Larry Dyer, beloved husband of Sheila Dyer, passed away on Nov. 27, 2015, at the age of 75.

Larry was born May 11, 1940, to Hollis and Violet Dyer. He was raised along with his younger brother Leon in Sutton, Que. He attended Sutton High School, where he was a member of many clubs and organizations. He also played basketball and baseball on school teams.

This is where he met and married the love of his life, Sheila Doris Ashby, from Montreal. On advice from a family member, Larry moved his family of three children west to Calgary in 1970, ending up in Pincher Creek a year later to work at Shell Waterton Complex. He worked there as a laboratory technician until his retirement in 1993.

Larry and Sheila also owned and operated Larry’s Greenhouses Ltd., providing the community with garden plants and flowers for over 20 years.

Larry had a love of rebuilding old vehicles and would be seen with a new project regularly. In all, he owned or restored over 90 vehicles and never grew tired of it. He always enjoyed new adventures, from car racing, hiking, four-wheeling in Arizona, to geocaching, of which he is credited with over 12,000 finds. He also enjoyed coaching and refereeing hockey and baseball in his younger days.

When he finally retired from Shell, Larry and Sheila spent six months a year for the next 23 years in the Yuma, Ariz., area where they accumulated many friends from all over the world. It was their home away from home.

Larry was always quick with a joke or a story and kept his friends in stitches with some of the antics he would get up to. He could remember every one of them and the reactions from everybody. He was always a real joker. He will be very much missed but will always be in our hearts and thoughts.

Larry was predeceased by his daughter Linda Ann Dyer and his parents, Hollis and Violet. He is survived by his wife, Sheila; his daughter Donna Jackson (Darryl, Heather and Janine); his daughter Susan Dyer (Jim McMurphy and Melissa Martin and great-granddaughter Mackenzie); his son David Dyer (Lindsay, Travis and Trent); and his brother Leon Dyer (Beverly) from Ayer’s Cliffe, Que. Upon Larry’s request, there will be no funeral. We are requesting in lieu of flowers that donations be made in Larry’s name to the Windy Slopes Health Foundation, PO Box 2554, Pincher Creek, AB, T0K 1W0.

Larry will be cremated and his ashes buried in the Dyer family plot in Sutton, Que., next to his daughter, parents and several generations of his family.

Luke Weatherill 1975 – 2015

It is with deep sorrow and regret that we, as a family, announce the passing of Luke Weatherill, after a courageous six-year battle with cancer.

Luke was born July 28, 1975, to Terry and Susan in Sechelt, B.C. Luke spent the first 20 years of his life on the Sunshine Coast, swimming, climbing trees, attending Cubs and Boy Scouts as a young boy. He enjoyed the outdoors; mountain biking, dirt biking, cars he bought and destroyed, and all of the crazy antics of the “Creeker Boys.” Luke also excelled at football, and had aspired to play for the NFL. The family moved to Pincher Creek in the fall of 1995. He soon followed and it’s where he spent the next half of his life. Here he met and impressed himself upon a whole new town, making fast friendships; and many of them. He worked on the rigs, and later as a well tester.

Luke married and became a proud father to Eden Lee in 2005, and stepdad to Asia. Luke was a hard worker, and over the years plied his hand at numerous things, always providing for his family. He worked for Colossal Construction, installing the cement bases for wind farms, both locally and in Moncton, N.B. Luke and Jennifer met and fell in love in the summer of ’07, and they welcomed Colton Jacob in 2009. Luke had a desire to teach his children about life, nature, and the merits of common sense and good deeds. He became ill and was given the news he had cancer in late 2009. Jennifer was always there for him, and nursed Luke through every step of his treatments, travel, procedures; and untimely passing. She has truly been his angel on earth.

Luke was a proud, strong, fair, wilful man who had always lived life by his rules. Nothing else but cancer could change that. He had the ability to charm, cajole, tease or, if necessary, intimidate one into his way of thinking.

Luke was a family man. It was all he wanted to keep doing; raising their kids, shooting gophers, his chickens, and to enjoy the fruits of his gardening.

Even at his sickest, he still took his family fishing, camping, hunting; and he had a great fondness for the surrounding areas like Castle Falls, and the views of the mountains from their home in Hill Spring, where he and Jenn and the kids had settled.

Luke was a man of strong beliefs, and lived his life according to them. He enjoyed a good steak, a fine wine and a fat joint. He appreciated the simple pleasures, and time spent with family and friends.

Luke leaves behind to mourn: his wife, Jennifer; his children, Eden and Colton; his stepchildren, Asia, Kayla, Bradey and Shanna; his parents, Susan and Terry; his sisters, Sarah, Laura, and Melissa. Luke had become a proud papa and also leaves his grandchildren, Aiden and Hailey, to mourn his passing.

Luke had numerous uncles, aunts, cousins, nieces and nephews, and many, many, many friends and caregivers who will forever be changed for having known him.

May he rest in peace.

Thank you, Spray Lake Sawmills

By Brad Quarin Christmas came early for STARS air ambulance, which received two major donations from Spray Lake Sawmills.

Spray Lake, whose business office is in Blairmore, presented a $10,000 cheque to the air ambulance at the Crowsnest Pass Health Centre. Another cheque for $10,000 was donated by the Spray Lake Sawmills Cochrane mill.

STARS transports patients to hospitals by helicopter.

“In our forest operations, we depend on STARS for emergency situations,” says Wade Aebli, operations supervisor at Spray Lake Sawmills.

He notes the business sometimes calls STARS directly, rather than going through 911.

This is one of the company’s biggest donations in recent years, he says.

“They understand safety is really important to the community, and … that’s our number one priority,” says Jessica Halliday, STARS major gifts development officer.

A partnership between the business and STARS already existed.

“Spray Lake Sawmills is very philanthropic [to STARS] in all of their locations,” she says.

She explains the money will go to “general operations,” principally aviation engineering and maintenance. The organization already had sufficient funding for fuel.

“It costs a lot of money to keep those helicopters in the sky,” she says.
