Holiday Train serenade

Jim Cuddy was one of the entertainers aboard the Canadian Pacific Holiday Train that stopped in Pincher Creek on Sunday. Young dancers in front of the stage welcomed the live dancing music as much as Jim enjoyed playing for them. Anne Gover of the Junction food bank said they raised $5,048 in addition to the $4,000 from CP. Many in attendance also donated food items, totalling 1,500 pounds.

Turnbulls keep farming in the family

By Brad Quarin The family behind Turnbull Charolais is this year’s toast of the ranching community. Their farm business was presented with the Family Farm Award of Excellence for 2015 from the Pincher Creek and District Chamber of Commerce.

“It’s quite humbling — of all the nice, good farm families in this area — that we got an award,” says dad Curtis Turnbull.

“It was really amazing, because I’ve never had that experience before,” says his eldest daughter, Kimberly.

It was also surprising that, for a second year in a row, there was only one nominee for the Family Farm Award. “This is a super, excellent ranching area,” he says. “You can’t get better ranchers.”

The award goes to a family that has demonstrated great farm management and community spirit.

Curtis and his wife, Nanette, have run Turnbull Charolais since 1998 and keep over 200 Charolais cattle.

Their children — Kimberly, 12, Kelly, 10, and Dyllan, 7 — pitch in to keep Turnbull Charolais going.

The farm’s history goes back over a century, with the Stuckeys settling on the land in 1898.

Rodney Turnbull, the grandson of the settlers, took over the farm and in 1976 switched from Angus to Charolais cattle. Charolais cows have bigger builds and cross well with other breeds, Curtis and Nanette say.

In 1983, Turnbull Charolais entered its first bull into the High Country Bull Sale in Pincher Creek. The family has been in the sale every year since, and their bulls have been used in breeding programs throughout Western Canada.

Between 1998 and today, by keeping their own heifers, the Turnbulls gradually grew their Charolais cattle herd from just a few to over 200.

Currently, all members of the family do their part. Dyllan says his job is to feed the farm cats and dogs.

Curtis explains that they feed the bulls grain out of buckets twice a day.

Kimberly says that her main job is helping her dad feed the cows.

In the summer, Kelly and Kimberly use their horses to move the cows and calves to the grazing lease.

Club, which keeps them active in the community.

Recently the club assisted caterers at the Angels Within Us fundraiser, mainly helping with cleanup. They also made cookies and organized a bake sale during Countdown to Christmas, Kimberly says.

The club managed a concession booth at the Pincher Creek Pro Rodeo.

Another good deed the girls have been involved in is cleaning up the highway, Nanette says.

At the chamber of commerce awards night, master of ceremonies Bob Westrop mentioned the highway cleanup, which brought a big round of applause from the crowd. There was also applause for the whole family, demonstrating the respect the community has for the Turnbulls.

Simple things can yield tremendous beauty.

Hoarfrost is a wonderful example of a delightful surprise we awake to some mornings.

Brenda Shenton has a knack for capturing moments of beauty. The photo at left shows a statue in her garden cloaked in Mother Nature’s artwork as the sun peeks shyly through the trees.

Saturday evening I was bound for High River and was warned by the friend I was going to visit that her house was surrounded by dense fog.

I passed through Claresholm around 9:30 and noticed frost building up in the ditches.

By the time I reached Nanton, everything was covered in thick hoarfrost. Christmas lights sparkled through the ice crystals to create a dazzling sight.

The highway was bare and dry, but every blade of grass in the ditches was covered in frost that twinkled in the headlights.

At Cayley, the only lights in the night were those on the typically cheerful barn we’ve all seen in our travels. The smile has been turned to a frown as a symbol of protest against the recent passing of Bill 6.

Questions about democracy occupied my thoughts for the next few kilometres. If people pause to think after seeing the unhappy face on the barn, I don’t think it’s a bad thing. The frost on the bulbs softened the message just a bit.

At this point, a light fog settled in and crystals glinted on the road.

the thickening fog. I didn’t meet any other vehicles on the long main-drag stretch, which created an eerie atmosphere.

The frost was amazing and was on every exposed surface. Each tree was transformed into a work of art.

I was reminded of my first visit after the 2013 flood. Hazmat suits, detours and devastation were my view when driving down the same street.

This time I saw new businesses, coloured Christmas lights, and felt a determined sense of hope.

For almost two years after the flood, I was troubled every time I passed one particular house.

The front door was covered in spray-painted words deeming the home to be uninhabitable.

The family moved back in, but I wondered how healing could begin with such a horrible memory tagged on their battered front door.

It turns out the door was their protest. It had been kicked in, and they were not changing it until the agency responsible for the damage covered the replacement cost.

This fall a new door appeared and I smiled each time I passed it. This was a positive sign for the community as a whole.

On Saturday night, the door was graced with a festive wreath highlighted with frost. Lights twinkled happily below the frozen dew.

In nature’s handiwork I saw healing, protest, artistry and hope. During these busy days, take time to appreciate the beauty that surrounds you.

Clothing and toy giveaway warmly appreciated Almost 200 people stopped in at the clothing and toy giveaway earlier this month at Napi Friendship Centre. The event is held twice a year by Parent Link with support from Napi Friendship Association, Brighter Futures, and McMan Youth, Family and Community Services.

Donations came from generous folks in the community and were greatly appreciated. New items were set aside for the Christmas hamper program, while volunteers sorted used items by size and gender for easy shopping.

“It’s a great thing all around,” says Diane Bowen-Oczkowski of Parent Link, who acknowledges that it wouldn’t happen without the partnership. She’s watched people pay it forward and pay it back through the giveaway over the years.

“Oodles and oodles and oodles of stuff was taken out of here,” she says.

Anne Gover of McMan adds that about 90 per cent of the clothing and toys went out the door.

At the end of the day, with a good amount of clothing still left on the tables and no storage space available, the group chose to extend the gift beyond the community.

As a personal project, Eleanor Maund-Stephens has been collecting clothing for Syrian refugees. She will deliver the leftovers to Calgary this week.

Photographer connects with wildlife and wild spaces

Photographer Curtis Larsen is now 50, but when he first started snapping “One of the reasons I take photos of nature and the outdoors is because photos back in his 20s, he did so with a film camera. that’s where I like to be,” he says. “The less time behind a desk, the better!”

Bertha Fitzpatrick 1924 – 2015

Bertha Fitzpatrick, beloved wife of the late Don Fitzpatrick, passed at the Chinook Regional Hospital in Lethbridge on Dec. 8, 2015, at the age of 91.

Bertha will be lovingly remembered by her children Keith (Carol) Fitzpatrick, Brenda Heisler and Lee Ann (Larry) Woods; grandchildren Jim (Tammy) and Kevin (Heather) Fitzpatrick, Glenda Kettles (Rod), Aley Kettles (Wade) and Lorali Kettles (Adam), Brad (Candace) and Brett Woods; 10 great-grandchildren; and her sister Lucille Biesel.

Besides her loving husband, Don, Bertha was predeceased by her daughter Wanda, her son-in-law Myles and her siblings Bill Meyer, Edna Conalty, Paul Meyer and Gertie Trodden.

Bertha was raised in the Twin Butte area. She married Don in 1943 and together they ranched and raised their family in the Yarrow-Fishburn area.

Bertha loved to travel, curl, bowl, dance and play cards.

A funeral service was held at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Pincher Creek on Dec. 15, 2015. Memorial donations in Bertha’s name may be made directly to a charity of one’s choice.

Angels Within Us fundraiser allows group to make a positive difference

By Brad Quarin Angels Within Us hosted an outstanding dinner and dance in late November, and attendees, in turn, “repaid” the community group for this favour.

The event is an annual fundraiser for the organization, which assists community members in times of need.

“It was a lovely event,” says Sherry Mackenzie, co-founder and president of Angels Within Us. “The auction and everything went off without a hitch.”

The dance sold out, with about 325 people attending. This is the capacity limit for the downstairs area of Community Hall, she says.

For Sherry, two moments of the night especially stood out.

One was when Nikki Gross and Sandi Breckenridge got onstage. Nikki had needed financial assistance while undergoing cancer treatments, and Sandi spoke on her behalf, doing an amazing job, Sherry says.

The other great moment was when Lachlan Rempel related how the organization helped put in a wheelchair ramp at their home for her young daughter.

The stories brought audience members to tears, Sherry says.

She was also pleased with the delicious prime-rib dinner and the attractive room decorations.

When it came to the auctions, travel vouchers and jewelry were hot sellers as usual, she says. A children’s BMX bike also went for twice its value.

Four tickets to ride the Holiday Train from Pincher Creek to Coleman were auctioned for $1,300. This money was donated directly to the Junction food bank.

The total amount raised from the auctions was $55,000. Combined with funds left over from last year, Sherry doesn’t imagine Angels Within Us will have to turn away any appeals for help this year.

Livingstone School warms hearts with meals

By Brad Quarin Serving a dinner and making lunches has kept Livingstone School staff and students busy and productive in November and December.

In late November, the grad class of 2016 held its annual Italian night spaghetti dinner in Cowley.

It raised more than $8,000 for the Lundbreck school’s grad ceremonies, nearly a record, says co-ordinator Joanne Verbaas.

The dinner attracted 180 people, with adults paying $8 a plate and students paying $5. The grads played a key role in helping plan the event, and Joanne reports they worked

Livingstone School has had Warm Your Heart Wednesday lunches for a few years, as a Me to We project, says administrative assistant Tanya Douglas.

The food is purchased by student council, with funds raised through bake sales, cake walks and other events.

Parents order meals for their children, and the food is cooked by Tanya and by Mary Krizan, with lots of help from other staff.

Over three Wednesdays, pizza, hotdogs and sloppy joes were served. The orders amounted to $900 this year, Tanya says.

SPCA cats are looking for a home this Christmas Submitted by Pincher Creek Humane Society Simone, a volunteer with the Pincher Creek Humane Society, knows what she wants for the holidays. Her only Christmas wish would be for some very special cats at the shelter to find new homes.

“Of course, the staff and volunteers do their best for every animal at the shelter,” she says. “But what each one of these precious kitties needs is a family, and a place that is their very own — that’s what I wish for.”

Here are just a few of the shelter cats needing a home for Christmas: Ellie (two years) Luna (nine months) When this mother kitty was rescued during a snowstorm, she was very pregnant, and trying to take shelter in a cardboard box. She raised seven kittens.

Luna was the tiniest of all of them, and really loves to be close to her mom.

Ellie exudes independence, while Luna loves to cuddle with her people.

When it comes to interactive play, Luna has the exuberance of a kitten, while Ellie has the patience and stealth of a good hunter. Both are talkative, with distinct voices. While both are the same colours, Ellie has beautiful swirl patterns in her coat, where Luna has stripes.

These two kitties have never been apart for long periods of time, and we are hoping that they will find a home together.

Huey and Dewey (seven to eight months)

These two brothers were found living under a house trailer when they were 12 weeks old. Since then, they have been inseparable. Once, our staff made the mistake of taking them to the vet in separate carriers, and they cried for each other until they were reunited!

These kitties would be kindred spirits with an introverted person who lives in a quiet home. Although they are a bit shy, quirky and skittish, once they feel comfortable around you, their affection pours out, and they have a very unique way of telling you they love you.

These brown-striped tabbies are both incredibly smart and inquisitive.

Nigel (seven months) Now here’s a cool story. One day last April, two sister cats gave birth on the same day, and ended up co-raising 11 kittens. Nigel was one of these. Early on, he showcased his athletic confidence by being the first in his litter to successfully scale the climbing wall that the shelter staff built out of carpet scraps.

While this daredevil has a charismatic personality, he is also incredibly friendly and easy-going. This wellrounded grey-striped tabby is relaxed around children and other cats, and is happy to occupy someone’s lap when it’s available, but he’s also content to spend time on his own.

If you’re looking for the perfect mix of independence and affection, Nigel

just might be for you. Please call us if you want to invite him into your family in time for the holidays.

All of these cats are spayed or neutered, and their vaccinations are up to date.

Please remember that with the onset of cold weather, more and more concerned residents are bringing litters

of newborn kittens to the shelter each week, and space is running out.

To avoid turning animals away, the shelter staff really hope that people wanting to adopt (or become a foster home) will consider reaching out before the holiday season begins.

Thank you, South Country Trappers Association Christmas came early for the Pincher Creek and District Agricultural Society. The South Country Trappers Association asked to make a presentation at the society’s annual meeting — and surprised the group with a $5,000 donation.

Ag society president Janet Watmough says the generous donation is appreciated and will go towards needed upgrades of facilities.

Brent Sinclair, president of the trappers group, explained that part of its mandate is to give back to the community, and that members felt this was an appropriate opportunity to do that.

South Country is hosting the the 2016 Alberta Trappers Association Rendezvous at the Pincher Creek agricultural grounds on the July long weekend. The event will include displays, demonstrations, educational seminars, guest speakers, vendors and the Ultimate Trapper competition.

Up to 700 people are expected for the event. Local organizer Judy Mackintosh says there will something for everyone at the family-oriented gathering.

Foothills 4-H Beef Club is keeping busy in the community

By Ellie Stauffer Foothills 4-H Beef Club kicked off the 4-H year with a reorganizational meeting on Oct. 15.

We now have a new executive: president Tom Welsch, vice-president Merrick Stauffer, secretary Taylor Wells, treasurer Sarah Kirby, district representatives Justin and Madeline Schoening, club reporters Ellie Stauffer and Cadence Sinnott, parliamentarian Bruce Kirby, and club historian Cayde Clark.

Other members are Erica Mackenzie, Deloy Mackenzie, Kassi Wells, Chaz Vance, Nelz Vance, and Mayz Vance.

We attended the community Remembrance Day ceremony on Nov. 11 and participated in the Parade of Lights on Nov. 20.

Nov. 21 was our weigh-in day, with a meeting following. This year we have 13 steer projects, seven female projects, six market and ewe projects, as well as a Cleaver program.

By Brad Quarin In mid October, Bob Short, client support services co-ordinator for CNIB, and his seeing-eye dog, Pacer, paid a visit to Pincher Creek.

He was welcomed by For Sight, the local CNIB support group.

Bob and Pacer have an important message to share.

Seeing-eye dogs are available, with full funding, to anyone in need in Pincher Creek, Crowsnest Pass and area.

A seeing-eye dog (also known as a guide dog) is trained to detect and avoid hazards and is used by the visually impaired. There are, however, certain requirements to owning one. A person has to be legally blind and able to move around well and take good care of the dog.

“It takes a real commitment,” Bob says.

Bob has five per cent less than normal vision, and chose to acquire Pacer from Guide Dogs for the Blind in San Rafael, Calif.

Guide Dogs for the Blind is a charity organization providing dogs at no charge to the visually impaired in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

Bob chose this organization because of its excellent reputation and its breeding program, but there are other schools around North America providing seeing-eye dogs

at no charge.

The Lions Club has its own school in Ontario, and finds support in its annual Purina Walk for Dog Guides, which used to be held in Pincher Creek.

The fact that the dog owner isn’t charged for the animal is a big help. Bob was told that the cost of raising and training Pacer was $30,000.

The dog starts by being socialized by a puppy raiser, and then undergoes training for guiding. Legally blind handlers then arrive at the school to receive their own two-week training. Handlers learn how to use the dogs on escalators, elevators and subways.

Seeing-eye dogs can be custom trained to suit a variety of clients, Bob says. He knows of a client in Saskatchewan who competes in the Paralympics. Bob himself competes in blind golf, and Pacer knows exactly what to do on a golf course.

A seeing-eye dog is a worker, not a pet. When it’s in its harness, it can’t be distracted. However, when Pacer’s harness is off, he’s “all dog,” says Bob. The Lethbridge CNIB can help clients who need a dog by providing names and addresses of schools, and advising them of the information they will need to provide. The CNIB can be reached at 403-327-1044.

Marvin (Butch) Hill 1952 – 2015

It is with incredible sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Butch Hill of Coleman at the Crowsnest Pass Health Care Centre on Dec. 3, 2015, at the age of 63.

Marvin Donald Hill was born in Natal, B.C., on July 11, 1952, to proud parents Irene and Don Hill. He was raised to always work hard, to be kind and to appreciate family and friends. When he was a young man, his heart was captured by the love of his life, Brenda Habdas. On May 26, 1973, the happy couple married, and were later blessed with a wonderful son, whom they raised in a warm and loving home.

When he wasn’t busy providing for his family, Butch enjoyed attending swap meets or hunting in the beautiful area surrounding Crowsnest Pass. He was also very fond of horsepower, both in the form of classic vehicles and horses.

As a former member of the Steelworkers Union, as well as the United Mine Workers of America, Butch’s fair-mindedness was evident. His gentle, caring nature will be missed by all who knew him.

Left to mourn his passing and celebrate his life are his devoted wife, Brenda Hill of Coleman; his beloved mother, Irene Hill of Coleman; his cherished son, Harley (Melissa) Hill of Calgary; his extended family; and special friends Ray and Maggie Joss, Tony and Zola Tuckwood, Mike Sharp (Caira), Guy and Tammy Ganci, Blair and Cathy Chatterson, Bobby Giza, and the employees of Nohels Road Construction, Glen Transport and the Coleman Husky.

He was predeceased by his father, Don Hill; his sister, Melodye Tworowski; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

In honouring Butch’s wishes, no funeral service will be held.

Brian Kenneth Dalman was born in Fort Macleod, Alta., on May 19, 1939, to proud parents Alice and Francis Dalman.

He was raised to appreciate life’s blessings and to never take the love of your family for granted.

He grew into a hard-working, handsome man, and on Nov. 8, 1975, he married the love of his life, Donna Loseth. Together, they raised a beautiful family and created countless happy memories.

In his free time, Ken enjoyed golfing, camping and fishing at the lake, and watching movies. He also took great pleasure and pride in woodworking. His attention to detail and skill with his hands was evident in the many projects he designed and constructed over the years.

Ken also loved to laugh; Bugs Bunny and the Road Runner never failed to make him chuckle! Above all else, Ken treasured time spent with his family and cherished his grandchildren and beloved dogs. He never had a bad word to say about anyone and treated everyone with respect.

Ken’s practical, easygoing demeanour and wonderful sense of humour will be greatly missed and forever remembered by everyone fortunate enough to have known him.

Left to mourn his passing and celebrate his life are his devoted wife, Donna Dalman of Blairmore; his dear children, Rodney Dalman of Blairmore, Trina (Stan Hodges) Lebarre of Lethbridge and Linda Dalman of Blairmore; his precious grandchildren, Daniell, Brittny and Maliki; his sisters, Pat Bedry of St. Albert, Alta., and Judy LeGrandeur of Pincher Creek; his special friend and “extra daughter,” Gwen Taggart; his canine companions Chloe and Snoopy; numerous nieces, nephews and extended family; as well as the many friends he made throughout his life.

He was predeceased by his parents, Alice and Francis; his stepfather, William Crook; his brother-in-law James Bedry; and his dog Angel.

Crowsnest Conservation Society leads a bird census

By Brad Quarin Break out the binoculars for the Christmas bird count, an annual effort to determine the kinds of birds living in Crowsnest Pass.

While Crowsnest Conservation Society member Denise Coccioloni-Amatto acknowledges there is a “miniscule” chance of spotting two turtledoves or a partridge in a pear tree, she still encourages everyone to join the count.

“The more eyes and ears you have, the better,” she says. And you don’t need to be experienced at birding, she explains.

Participating in the bird count is fascinating and the information gathered is useful for bird studies. It can also add to your own appreciation

of the variety of birds in the area.

“It’s fun for us. We love it,” Denise says.

The count will start at 8 a.m. on Friday. All those interested can show up at the Crowsnest Conservation office, next to the Telus building on Main Street Blairmore.

An aspiring counter should take along binoculars and appropriate clothing for the weather.

A hat with a brim is handy because snow can be hard on the eyes, she says.

The group will split into three, with one covering Bellevue and Hillcrest, one covering Blairmore and Frank and one covering Coleman.

Together, the Christmas bird count will look at an area from Sentinel Lake to Burmis Lake.

Anyone with bird feeders can also help out by watching the feeders that day and listing the types of birds and the number that visit. This list can be emailed to Denise at rlaamatto@shaw.ca.

The information will be delivered to Bird Studies Canada, who will use it in detecting how weather pattern changes, climate change or population movements may be affecting bird populations.

This year, Crowsnest Pass birders also participated in the Christmas bird count at Waterton Lakes National Park. Denise says it is fitting that help be given to other groups involved in the annual bird count.

Calendar features Crowsnest Pass Battalion The 192nd Infantry Battalion of the Canadian Expeditionary Force of the First World War is commemorated in the 2016 Crowsnest Historic Calendar, just released by the Crowsnest Historical Society.

The 192nd Battalion, known as the Crowsnest Pass Battalion, started recruiting in the Pass on Feb. 17, 1916. On June 15 of that year, the battalion moved to Sarcee Camp in Calgary for military training.

On Nov. 1, 1916, the 192nd Battalion sailed from Halifax on the RMS Empress of Britain, under the command of Lt.-Col. Henry Edward Lyon, with the strength of 23 officers and 424 holding other ranks.

They arrived in England on Nov. 11.

The calendar features many photographs of the battalion in Crowsnest Pass, at Sarcee Camp and at the Frank military hospital, as well as a picture of the ship that took them to England.

The 2016 Crowsnest Historic Calendar is available from the Crowsnest Museum and several businesses in the Pass. The cost is $10 and all proceeds go toward the operation of the museum.

In the coming year, Crowsnest Museum is opening special exhibits on the First World War, the 192nd Battalion and our communities’ contributions to the war effort.

Last Chance track and field results The Last Chance track and field meet was held in Edmonton on Nov. 21 and 22. Passtrak had only one representative at the meet, but he did very well representing the Crowsnest Pass club for the first time.

Ethan Richards participated in three events in the youth boys division, for 16- and 17-year-old athletes, during the two-day competition.

On the first day of the meet he placed fifth in the

60-metre race with a time of 7.56 seconds, a new Passtrak club record for his age group.

On the same day he also ran in the 400-metre race, where he placed sixth in 58.93 seconds.

On the second day he ran in the 200 metres and his time was 25.43 seconds. He placed seventh overall.

Hints for helping the food bank There are many collections happening on behalf of our local food banks these days and we are very appreciative because there is a definite need out there.

We are pleased to tell you that at Christmas in the Park, held Dec. 6 in Coleman, we received 52.8 pounds of food and $35.75 in cash. That covered some empty spots on our shelves. Thank you so much to everyone who stopped by the table.

If you haven’t donated and are wondering what is needed, I’ll give you a hint — juice, soda crackers, unsweetened cereal, chunky soups, hand soap, laundry soap and personal care items such as deodorant and razors. We presently have lots of small tins of soups, canned salmon and canned tomatoes.

A word of advice: outdated foods are a no-no that the health inspector will shake his head at. Recently, we were given foods dated 2009, 2011, 2012 and 2013, which all had to be trashed, much to our regret.

Something else to remember: please do not set a box of donations on the step of the food bank when it is not open. We have had to trash items which were frozen or rained on and not safe to use. The hours of the Bargain Shop are convenient for everyone and the donation box is right inside the door.

Also, if you receive something in your hamper that you can not use, please bring it back with you the next time you visit the food bank.

By Brad Quarin In an effort to cool down children playing outdoors in the summer and to provide for a different type of experience, the Pincher Spray Park Society has been holding small fundraisers for a spray park in Pincher Creek.

Among the things the group has sponsored are barbecues, and if you don’t think a hamburger can make a difference, one led to a donation of $5,027.53.

That fateful burger was purchased by Wayne Oliver, operations supervisor at TransAlta Utilities, at the recycling roundup.

He was just learning about the society. “I took one of their handouts for sponsorship,” he says. “I made the decision locally for this donation as I recognized the benefits a spray park would be to children and young families in my community.”

The society was impressed by the unique way TransAlta came up with the dollars.

Wayne explains that in the power generation business, metal brackets, parts, motors and cable are always needing to be changed, with the old ones accumulating in bins. The scrap metal and wire are taken to the salvage yard, where they can be exchanged for money.

TransAlta received $90 per tonne of scrap metal, and it turned out the timing was opportune, as the price dropped to $30 per tonne shortly afterward.

Wayne was able to present the society with seven cheques totalling $5,027.53.

Pincher Spray Park Society greatly appreciated the generosity. Jennifer Draper says the money will go into the society’s main account, along with $525 from a Countdown to Christmas bake sale another other funds raised. The group is still far from its goal of $500,000.

This isn’t the first time TransAlta has used scrap metal proceeds to give to a community project. Wayne says that last year the company collected $2,300 from some scrap metal and donated the funds to the Southern Alberta Summer Games.
