First Student shows community spirit year round

By Brad Quarin A big yellow school bus parked outside Ranchland Mall this December was hard for Pincher Creek shoppers to miss. Another was spotted outside the Pincher Creek Trade Show in September.

Aside from providing the important function of busing children to school and Shell employees to work, First Student has demonstrated community spirit through charity events such as the Stuff a Bus campaign.

With such widespread service to the community, it is no wonder that First Student won this year’s large-business award at the Pincher

Creek and District Chamber of Commerce Awards of Excellence.

“It’s nice to know that people realize that we’re more than just the yellow school buses.

They see us out there giving back,” says Sharon Roberts, First Student location manager.

The award, for customer service and community spirit, is her proudest achievement with First Student since she started in 2012.

The win was also sweet for the bus drivers.

“It was very nice. Very, very uplifting,” says Laurel Holte, who is charged with running the town bus, picking up energetic young children and delivering them to school. All the other

buses run in the rural areas.

Laurel has been driving buses for Pincher Creek and the surrounding rural area for 33 years, longer than the buses have been under the First Student name.

The buses ran as Cardinal Coach Lines for 13 years and, before that, they were under the school division.

Currently, First Student is contracted by Livingstone Range School Division and Shell to provide busing to the schools and Shell Waterton Complex.

“Shell, here, for the Waterton plant, feels that it’s safer for their employees to take a bus to work as opposed to having all those individual vehicles on the highway,” Sharon says. She believes that road conditions and wildlife would make that difficult.

The buses for Shell are white and have more luxurious seats.

The familiar yellow school buses take mostly rural routes, with Laurel being the only one with a town route. This means she tends to pick up 40 children, mostly elementary school students, who can be pretty spirited.

“Every day is eventful,” Laurel says.

One of the rural drivers is Wayne Camber, who says he has handled the same Highway 505 route for 11 years. “I enjoy it,” he says.

More recently, First Student has contracted to run the Ranchland Express, a free shuttle bus service between residential areas and Ranchland Mall. It carries an average of five shoppers each week, Sharon says.

Sharon first brought Stuff a Bus to Pincher Creek three years ago. She bor-

rowed the idea to fill a bus with food donations and school supplies, from Edmonton Transit.

With three campaigns each year, Sharon says First Student stays pretty busy.

The last effort to collect school supplies was in September. These supplies are for children whose families are not able to purchase these items themselves.

The Pincher Creek Lions Club, Pincher Office Products and First Student filled two boxes for each of the four schools benefiting from the program. These are Livingstone School in Lundbreck and Canyon School, Matthew Halton High School and St. Michael’s School in Pincher Creek.

There was a huge increase in loose-leaf sheets, other paper products and binders.

They also received the usual markers, pens and pencils.

The latest Stuff a Bus for the Junction food bank was also a success. Food donations filled all but three seats in a 35-foot bus. The next Stuff a Bus for the food bank will be in June.

Sharon is president of the chamber of commerce, but is not involved in choosing the award winners.

She notes this has been a wonderful recognition for the 25 people on her staff.

Submitted by Ritch Braun The University of Calgary held its first track meet of the indoor season on Dec. 6. Ten Passtrak athletes participated in a total of 25 events. Their efforts earned one gold, one silver and four bronze medals and set seven new club records.

Naoise Gelber competed in the Tyke category, which included everyone under 11 years old. She is seven and finished 19th in the 60-metre race in 11.26 seconds. She then placed 17th in the 150 metres in 29.05 seconds. Her final event was the 800 metres, where her 15th-place time was 3:47.54. All three of her results set new Passtrak club records for her age group.

Clara Websdale is nine and was in the Tyke category as well. She finished 26th in the 60 metres in 11.64 seconds, and 19th in the 150 metres in 30.07 seconds. She then completed the 800-metre race in 3:34.15 for 10th place, and that set a new Passtrak club record for her age group.

Sawyer Sawatzky is also nine and was in the Tyke category for boys. His 60-metre time was 11.49 seconds for 19th, and his 150-metre time was 28.36 for ninth. He finished sixth in the 800-metre race in 3:43.69.

Bronwyn Gelber was Passtrak’s final Tyke competitor.

She ran the 60 metres in 10.20 seconds for third place, and repeated that placing in the 150 metres by running 24.99 seconds. Her 800-metre time was 3:31.67 for eighth place.

Ronan Gelber represented Passtrak in the 11-year-old boys age group. His 60-metre time was 10.20 for 10th and his 150-metre time was 25.51 for seventh. He moved all the way up to third place in the 800 metres, where he recorded a 2:54.67 result.

Paige Richards ran her races in the 12-year-old age group.

She ran 9.46 seconds in the 60 metres for 12th, and 23.49 seconds in the 150 metres for 11th. She then placed fifth in the 800 metres in 3:25.40.

Mathias Gelber ran the 60 metres in the 13-year-old boys group, where his time was 8.93 seconds for 10th.

Tim Jorgensen earned bragging rights as Passtrak’s athlete of the meet. He did so by running the two fastest races of his life. He finished the 60 metres in 9.27 seconds for 14th place, then proceeded to improve his 150-metre time to 23.10, also for 14th place.

Ethan Richards ran the 60 metres in the boys youth age group, which includes all the 16- and 17-year-old athletes.

He finished third in 7.60 seconds. He then moved into the open age group for the 200-metre race. The tougher competition helped him run the fastest 200 metres of his life, 24.96 seconds, which also set a new Passtrak club record. His time was good enough for 16th in the open category.

Bob Grier ran two races in the masters age group. He placed second in the 60 metres in 9.12 seconds, and first in the 800 metres in 2:32.21. Both results set new Passtrak club records for his age group, which is 50- to 54-year-old athletes.

Colourful posters focus on remembrance

By Brad Quarin For the second year in a row, Crowsnest Pass teen Destiny Loseth placed first in the Remembrance Day colour poster contest, sponsored by the Coleman Legion.

Destiny, a Grade 10 student at Crowsnest Consolidated High School, was awarded $30 in mid December by Legion president Ed Strembicki. Her poster now advances to a district-wide competition, in an area including Pincher Creek, Claresholm and Medicine Hat. Art is a passion for Destiny. “It’s a different

way to get out my feelings,” she says.

This time she was inspired by the beautiful sunset she witnessed when starting her poster.

But she was also inspired by a photo she saw of a soldier praying at a cross, so she incorporated both into her work.

She was surprised to place first again.

Debby Greenwood, secretary-treasurer of the Coleman Legion, says posters were judged by the coffee group and other Legion members.

Amber Howe, also a CCHS student, placed second and received $25.

My Little Corner Did you make a New Year’s resolution as the clock struck midnight on Friday?

Promises of change are most often made with the best of intentions. Ideas shared at a family dinner and declarations made under the influence of a few glasses of champagne are all made with hope.

Everyone I know has a personal habit they desire to alter or something they hope to do better.

But resolutions tend to have a negative tone.

“I’m too fat, I need to lose 20 pounds,” is a familiar one we’ve all heard before.

The phrasing isn’t at all motivating and that’s part of the trouble. The desire to lose weight is sincere, but the negative voice you say it to yourself in may be self-defeating.

It can be helpful to have several smaller goals that lead you to where you want to be.

“This year I’d like to treat myself better,” might be a better overall goal. Beef it up with a few small, achievable promises that are measurable and you can set yourself up for success.

You could choose a few of these: I will eat breakfast each morning; I will exercise twice a week; I will limit eating out to twice a month; I will go for a walk at lunch time three days a week; I will spend one dedicated evening with family and/or friends each week; I will find quiet time for myself at some time each week.

As time passes, you may find yourself exercising three times a week and meditating every day. At the end of the year, don’t be surprised if, without negative pressure, you’ve dropped those 20 pounds while creating a happier, healthier version of you.

I began working toward my personal resolutions last fall. Thanks to some good advice, I’ve been focusing on small goals and seeing firshand how much the big picture can change with each little accomplishment.

It’s been challenging and there are regular ups and downs, but getting back to the small goals is much less daunting after a setback.

A routine I’ve revived over the summer is journal writing. A quick reflection on the day helps put things in perspective and I’ve managed to write almost every evening.

The last sentence I write always begins with “I’m grateful for ...”

Most often the words flow easily, but on tough days I need to dig deeply to find them. It’s a great exercise, especially when the words don’t come easily. My day ends perfectly when I have something positive in my mind as I lay down my pen and turn out the light.

May you be successful with your New Year’s resolutions, no matter what they are, and may you experience much happiness in 2016.

Drive One 4 UR School earns maximum payout for schools

By Brad Quarin This year was the best ever for Drive One 4 UR School in Pincher Creek.

For the past four years, Castle Ford in has featured this event, encouraging people to take test drives of its vehicles. Ford of Canada pays $20 for each test drive taken that day, up to a maximum of $6,000.

This money is divided evenly between Matthew Halton High School and St. Michael’s School and is used to support extracurricular activities.

“I am grateful for Ford and their willingness to support both schools in the community with this event each year,” says MHHS teacher Randy Whitehead.

In the latest effort, held in September, 300 test drives were taken, reaching the maximum of $6,000, says George Wolstenholme at Castle Ford. This is the first year Pincher Creek has hit that target.

George credits the success of the event to strong community support and promotion by the schools.

“It could not have been accomplished without the volunteer help,” Randy says. In particular, he points to parents who helped co-ordinate and run the event.

Friends of St. Michael’s and the Matthew Halton Booster Club each received $3,000.

Kelly Cooley, director of Friends of St. Michael’s, says it will go to its athletic account, and to cultural events and class materials.

Shenooks win Whitefish tourney Submitted by Joan Kocsis The Pincher Creek Shenooks were the 2015 rec champions in the annual women’s hockey tournament at Whitefish, Mont., held Dec. 4 to 6.

The Shenooks finished the tournament undefeated, winning the first game 14-0 against the Kalispell Flames, second game 6-1 against the Whitefish Mud Puppies, and third game 9-0 against the Crowsnest Pass Timberwolves.

This let us play in the championship game against the three-time reigning champions, the Cranbrook Shooters. Cranbrook scored the first goal and the Shenooks responded by scoring the next four. Cranbrook managed to score one more, bringing the final score to 4-2.

Foraging — As with most carnivores, the pine marten diet is influenced by the abundance and availability of prey. Much of the diet is dominated by voles, but other species like hares, squirrels, chipmunks, mice, shrews, birds, eggs, amphibians, nuts, fruit and fish may also be added to the menu.

A marten at rest requires approximately three voles to meet its caloric requirements.

Behaviour — The activity of the

pine marten seems to vary with day length and season, with more activity during the summer than the winter. This makes sense, as pine martens, even with their wonderful fur, experience high heat loss due to limited fat reserves. In winter they may go into mild torpor to reduce heat loss.

They are agile climbers that spend a lot of time hunting in trees. However, pine martens are also equipped to use the snowpack for thermal cover, and may forage extensively under the snow. They are also well equipped to travel atop

the snow.

While often curious, adult pine martens are territorial loners, unless it is breeding season (typically July or August). Pine martens may begin to breed at two years of age. Courtship lasts about two weeks. However, the female is able to postpone embryonic implantation until late winter, when the fetuses are gestated for about a month.

A litter of up to five kits is birthed in March or April in a den that may consist of a woodpile, a squirrel nest, or any other cavity the female deems suitable. The kits will be weaned at around six weeks,

which is approximately the same time their eyes open, and then moved to a new den around seven weeks of age. They reach adult body weight at three months, and leave home in the fall of their first year.

Our yard was haunted by the pine marten all evening. It hunted mice and voles in the grass by the firepit, so I imagine that it had also been hunting mice or voles in the woodpile. I’m not sure how successful it was, as darkness fell and we returned to the house. But given the mice and vole population in our yard, I sure hope the pine marten sticks around for a good long while.
