Handcrafted bag presented to maker’s family

By Brenda Shenton A well-loved beaded bag has made its way back to the family of the person who gifted it over 45 years ago. It was a heartwarming moment, demonstrating clearly that some things are just meant to be.

When Betty Smith of Pincher Creek decided it was time to downsize and find a new home for some of her possessions, she entertained the idea of donating a white deerhide purse with beadwork to the local museum.

Happenstance stepped in and Betty found herself reading an article in Shootin’ the Breeze about Michelle Smith (no relation), a young entrepreneur who had started Michelle’s Moccasins, a homebased business making custom footwear.

Betty was thrilled to discover that Michelle is the granddaughter of Susan Smith (nee Yellow Wings), who had made and beaded the purse for Betty as a Christmas gift around 1970. Betty says she remembers thinking, “I know where it has to go,” and contacted Michelle to make arrangements to return it to the family.

Betty had become a good friend of Susan’s over the years, and her husband, Bill, also knew her when he helped her with accounting (he worked for Charlie Price at the time) at her grocery store in Brocket. One day she sent the gift for Betty home with Bill.

Michelle is very pleased to have the bag back and will have it framed in a shadow box for preservation. “To have her work coming back to our family is wonderful,” she says.

Michelle’s mother, Roberta Smith, was also on hand when Betty presented the purse. “That is her style, she liked to do flowers,” says Roberta fondly.

It is not the first item returned to the Smith family. Dale Lillico returned a white buckskin jacket that was made for her in

1960. Roberta says Dale told her, “Your mom is sending her work back to you because you are the ones who are now doing the beading.”

Michelle works full time in Calgary as a Mountie and was happy to find she could manage the sewing and beading in her spare time. “It is very calming to do bead work,” she says.

Each of her projects is specifically designed, sewn and beaded for each customer. She returns to Brocket on the Piikani Nation on weekends to be with her mom and her niece Ava. Roberta and her daughter often work side by side on their different projects.

Roberta has done a large variety of bead work, from teepees to clothing.

Michelle says she grew up with it all around her. She does not consider herself an artist, but more of a craftsman.

“It is not actually art,” she says. “It is a culture.”

Michelle has stirring memories of her grandmother and grandfather’s house filled with children — foster children, adopted children and anyone who happened by. Growing up in the home, she remembers her grandmother always beading as a part of the culture.

“We were rich with family,” she says, and “there was a multi-generational family influence” on her wanting to pursue beadwork.

“I grew up with it,” she explains.

In recent years she was inspired by watching her mother doing it. She was glad to take the opportunity to learn.

Roberta says, “Once you get into it, it is just natural.”

Michelle’s words remind us that family is what is most important.

“This bag was made before I was even born,” she says. “It is part of her coming home to us.”

And as if he hasn’t been busy enough, Alex has also been handcrafting upcycled merchandise to sell at future shows and gigs.

“It’s all just authentic, semi-rustic handmade stuff,” Alex says. “It’s not typical T-shirts.”

Alex will be in Saskatoon doing promotional work for A Rancher’s Son when the track comes out, and fans will be relieved to know that he’ll be in good company — with his Bastard Poetry bandmates.

“We’ll be listening to some new bassists and we’ll also be in the studio,” he says, reiterating that the band remains very much alive and well, despite their current hiatus.

Alex will also take to the studio to record some new solo tracks.

In the meantime, fans can stay tuned for tour dates and announcements on Alex’s new Facebook page, A Rancher’s Son.

Seeking the story of a Christmas tree

By Brad Quarin This season, one Christmas tree just outside Lundbreck has garnered a lot of positive attention and curiosity.

The small tree, visible from Highway 3, is reminiscent of Charlie Brown’s Christmas tree. It has been decorated for the past few years and local people are wondering who is behind it.

“I’m not sure who decorates that ‘Charlie Brown tree’ just east of Lundbreck every year, but it makes me smile every day I drive past it,” Cheryl

McKinlay of Crowsnest Pass wrote on Facebook.

Many who replied shared her sentiments.

Cheryl helps explain what makes the tiny tree endearing. “I enjoy seeing something that a little love has been put into, for everyone to enjoy,” she says. Given its location, both locals and visitors can appreciate it.

Kudos to the protectors of the Waterton Front

By Brad Quarin The beauty of the Waterton Front and the pivotal position of this front are of vital concern to the Yellowstone to Yukon Conservation Initiative. The Y2Y is a joint American-Canadian organization concerned with connecting ecosystems and conserving wildlife corridors, as well as protecting habitat.

In that vast region – covering parts of the Yukon, the Northwest Territories, British Columbia, Alberta and five states – the land near Waterton Lakes National Park has not gone unnoticed.

“If you drive south from Pincher Creek on southern Alberta’s Highway 6, you’re in for some amazing scenery,” the Y2Y website reads.

Website writers describe “a wall of snowdusted mountains overlooking rolling green ridges and farmland,” where healthy wildlife can be found between “jagged mountain peaks and lush valleys.”

In October, the organization demonstrated its appreciation not only for the land, but also for three groups dedicated to protecting it and keeping it connected. Y2Y presented the Ted Smith Award to the Waterton Biosphere Reserve Association, the Nature Conservancy of Canada and the Southern Alberta Land Trust Society.

This is the second year for the award, which recognizes collaborative efforts to protect critical habitat and avoid conflicts between landowners and wildlife.

The three organizations don’t technically have shared projects. However, the Waterton Biosphere Reserve Association and NCC have similar purposes and contribute to each other’s projects, says Jennifer Jenkins. She is the communication co-ordinator for the association and, as a rancher, also works with the NCC. In particular, the NCC has participated in the association’s program Carnivores and Communities. This program emphasizes preventing conflicts between landowners and wildlife by removing attractants, and is one of the association’s most well-known projects, Jennifer says.

Carnivores and Communities is comprehensive, mainly concerned with grizzlies but also black bears and wolves. It offers a dead-stock removal service in the municipal districts of Pincher Creek and Cardston and subsidies on bear-proof garbage bins.

The program also helps replace or upgrade grain storage bins, adding steel bear-proof doors.

Carnivores and Communities shares the cost of installing electric fences around grain storage bins and cabins, Jennifer says.

The NCC is also concerned with conserving land, and partners with 42 families in the Waterton area to make conservation agreements and land purchases.

Since arriving in Waterton in 1997, the NCC has conserved 30,000 acres of land and invested $50 million, says communications co-ordinator Carys Richards.

Collaboration with the Southern Alberta Land Trust Society has also been vital to conserving the Waterton Front habitat.

SALTS is a non-profit organization dedicated to protecting southern Alberta grasslands, woodlands and wetlands. It is based in High River, but has conservation easements on lands north of Waterton and along Pincher Creek, the Cowboy Trail and Porcupine Hills, says office manager Berry Urban.

Those easements prevent development that can include mining, transmission lines, gas lines, intensive agriculture, as well as residential use of the land. Ranchers often approach SALTS looking for such protection, she says.

She notes SALTS can’t guard the landscape on its own, and its members often meet with representatives of the Waterton Biosphere Reserve See WATERTON FRONT, continued on page 7

The Waterton Biosphere Reserve Association was delighted and surprised by the Ted Smith Award, Jennifer says. She believes it recognizes not only the association, but all of its supporters in this biosphere reserve, designated by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization in 1979.

“It takes a lot of work,” she says. As a result, there are many people to thank.

Likewise, the NCC and SALTS are pleased with the honour and acknowledgement of their work in conservation.

The Ted Smith Award commemorates the achievements of one of Montana’s great conservationists. It is granted to an individual or collective that contributes to landscape conservation and habitat preservation in the Y2Y region.

They are mailed to those who need them, free of charge.

How can you help? Buy a skein of Cascade Ultra Pima, get the pattern and yarn from A Nest of Needles Wool Shop, and knit two or three knockers. Once made, return them to the shop where you bought the yarn. Or, if you don’t want to knit, buy a skein of yarn to donate — and volunteers will do the knitting for you. Easypeasy!

Who says magpies aren’t good for anything? Ralph and Marlene Bourque captured this image in their Pincher Creek backyard last week. While it’s not uncommon to have a buck taking a break in a local yard or to see birds picking bugs from cattle, Ralph says he’d never seen magpies get in on the act. It started with one bird who appeared to call the others to join in. Ralph says the buck would turn his head to guide the birds behind his ears and seemed to enjoy the lengthy grooming session.

By Brad Quarin Farming and ranching has always been prominent in Pincher Creek and is seen as an iconic industry in Alberta, so it is not surprising that there are strong opinions about Bill 6.

The controversial provincial bill extends Occupational Health and Safety protection to agricultural wage earners, bringing Alberta in line with the other provinces.

At the same time, a proposed carbon tax is a concern to some in the community because of the Shell Waterton Complex.

To learn more about these important issues, Stand Up for Alberta, a nonprofit group, is inviting residents to an information session on Saturday.

“People can make an informed decision,” says Rachael Nelson, a Stand Up for Alberta volunteer.

She says the purpose of the session isn’t to sway people to one side or the other in these debates, but to explore how the new laws would affect the community.

If people are not happy with what they hear, the session will look into how ordinary people can make a difference.

The session will also consider other issues on the government’s agenda for the year, Rachael says. The main speaker, George Clark, feels there should be a referendum on the new legislation.

Rachael says she got involved because her family is in farming and ranching, though her own business is not affected by Bill 6.

Rachael feels the changing laws will affect everyone in the community, even those not directly in the farming business. So, anyone could take interest in the event.

The session runs from 1 to 4 p.m. at Pincher Creek Community Hall.

Dinner theatre is back at Cowley Community Hall. These two plays will be presented on Feb. 5 and 6. Cocktails will be served at 5:30 p.m., dinner will be served at 6:30, and the plays will begin at 7:30.

Three new actors have joined the cast this year. Brenda Campbell, Jane Tew and Danielle Homme are adding their talents to the cast,

which includes Ed Lindsell, Doris Blackburn, Gerry Alex, Tracy Glen, Pat Neumann, Lorne Jackson and Gord Pitt. The seasoned actors and the new actors are preparing the play, enjoying the humorous script written by Isabel McReynolds Gray.

The two one-act plays both involve fulfilling hopes and dreams. This is a new approach to live theatre, presenting two short plays with a common theme. It will be an entertaining evening as the play group invites members of the local communities to join in for a fun evening of live performance.

Pincher Creek Curling Club offers fun times with sturling league

By Brad Quarin Curling is a popular Canadian pastime for many, but for some with knee issues or joint problems, the classic game may be problematic. Others may simply be interested in a spin on the game.

Debbie Reed, past president of the Pincher Creek Curling Club, falls into the former category, because of torn ligaments in her knee.

Luckily, the club has something to offer people with such issues with the establishment of Pincher Creek’s first “sturling” league. The word was invented with the s standing for stick or slide, the t standing for two players and the rest derived from the word curling.

The league allows for stick curling, which involves pushing a rock with a curling broom rather than getting on your knees to throw it. However, the latter is still an option.

For curlers looking for something different, the sturling league should be appealing for its variations on the rules.

Curlers play in teams of two rather than four. Each player has six rocks to throw in each end rather than the two thrown in regular curling games. Sweeping or brushing can be done only from the hog line to the back of the house.

The sturling league isn’t aimed at any particular age group, though most of the current members are seniors, Debbie says.

The league offers drop-in sessions with instructor Dennis Cleland at 2 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The cost per player is $5.

Dennis won the sturling provincials in 2011. He had been living in Brooks but is now back in the community, Debbie says.

The main purpose of the league is to have fun.

To adjudicate piano classes, we welcome Calgary native Lana Henchell. She graduated with her doctoral degree in piano performance from McGill University, and received both undergraduate and graduate degrees in piano performance at the University of Calgary. In addition to performing, Lana teaches privately and sessionally at the University of Calgary.

Adjudicator Olena Kilchyk will visit the from Calgary to offer advice to our bowed strings and fretted strings classes. Olena is a native of Ukraine, where she graduated from Odessa State Music College and Odessa State Conservatory. After immigrating to Canada, she received a master of music degree in cello performance from the University of Calgary. Olena is the principal cellist for the Calgary Bach Festival Society.

We welcome Diane Llewelyn-Jones as the adjudicator for vocal, musical theatre, speech and choral classes. She began singing in festivals at the age of seven, and a love of performing laid the foundation for a lifelong musical and theatrical career. She holds a bachelor’s degree in theatre arts from Brigham Young University in Utah. Diane is the owner and artistic director of the Waterton Teenie Weenie Theatre Company, which specializes in family-friendly productions.

Since 1957, the Crowsnest Pass Music Festival has offered students in our area and neighbouring communities a chance to perform for qualified teachers and receive valuable feedback to help direct their studies.

It is also a wonderful opportunity for community members to hear fine performances of a wide range of music, and to support young people on their quest for excellence. Many students have gone on to perform at the provincial level, and some have even gone on to pursue music careers on the international stage.

All music students are invited to enter the festival, regardless of instrument or style of music. Although it is mainly for school-age children, adults and families are also welcome to register. The festival has the ability to create new classes based on interest and is open to new ideas and new members.

Whispers from the Winds Submitted by Sally Marcellus Whispering Winds Village Remembrance Day started a busy November and December for our residents. As some were unable to attend the Legion ceremonies in town, those who stayed here attended and much appreciated the taping of the ceremonies in our chapel. Thank you, George.

We had a craft and bake sale, which was well attended. If you are here in the morning, you can see some of our knitters gathered for coffee and conversation, and knitting by the fireplace. Very cozy!

Our crib tournament in November went well, with 12 players from outside Whispering Winds, including one from Hill Spring.

Lunch was included, and everyone had a good time. Our next one will be in February.

The last Monday bingo also had a good turnout. These are enjoyed by many, including residents from Crestview Lodge and Crowsnest Pass. We resume on Jan. 25.

Our Christmas buffet on Dec. 12 was attended by over 100, including family and friends. These buffets are special to us and our guests.

The Time 4 Saxophone Quartet were here on Dec. 16. They came from Lethbridge and entertained us with a variety of selections, including Christmas music. They have been here before and we always enjoy their talents.

Over the Christmas season we were entertained by several groups.

Rockyview Church Youth Singers were here, and Rockyview School children and Children’s World came and worked on crafts with some of our residents. It was fun and everyone had a good time.

Singers from the Lutheran church also brought their carol singers.

We are grateful that they take the time to come. The singing by all was wonderful and helped to get us in the spirit.

We had our residents-only Christmas dinner on Dec. 23. This is special, and our chef, James, always comes up with a wonderful meal that we all enjoy. Afterward, we gathered by the fireplace and had a Christmas singalong. Forty of us sang, and Ella Froese accompanied us on the organ. A few readings were given and the evening remarks were great. We should do this more often!

It was quiet here for a few days as some went to visit their families. Many of us celebrated New Year’s Eve together, and our social evening was a time to visit and enjoy each other’s company. Some couldn’t stay till midnight, but 14 did. We sang “Auld Land Syne,” accompanied by Sylvia Faoro on the organ, and we opened the door and let the new year in. It was great!

2015 was a year of new and different things taking place; some residents leaving for more care, and new ones arriving. Life here takes place in a family atmosphere and we all enjoy our times together. As we move into 2016, all of us here at Whispering Winds Village wish our many friends and families a Happy New Year — full of good health, happiness and peace.

New location for community services Effective Jan. 11, the offices of the Crowsnest Pass community services department moved from the municipal office to the M.D. McEachern Community Centre.

The move, along with a commitment of $600,000 in the capital plan for roof and boiler system repairs at the MDM, is part of an overall strategy to solidify the future of the centre.

“These decisions are a reflection of council’s commitment to the community and to the groups that utilize the MDM,” says Mayor Blair Painter. “The changes being implemented by staff will help the MDM become a cost-effective, vibrant, active and well-maintained facility that will be attractive to new tenants.”

Impaired driving incidents down over holidays

By Brad Quarin Impaired driving is an issue of concern any time of the year, but with so many people on the highways during the holidays, it becomes even more of a worry.

Last week, the RCMP announced an overall decrease in serious vehicle incidents in Alberta from Dec. 23 to Jan. 3, compared to this time last year.

Although the RCMP presence on the roads over the holidays was the same as last year, there were 112 impaired driving charges, compared to 157 last year. One case of impaired driving leading to bodily harm this year compares to seven last year.

In local areas, impaired driving charges during this time frame were few. “It was a good season all in all,” says Ray Starzynski, commander of the Piikani detachment.

However, local Mounties say our area can still do better to curb drinking and driving.

The Piikani detachment stopped 1,000 vehicles on Highway 3 between Dec. 17 and Jan. 3, Sgt. Starzynski says. Two drivers were found to be impaired on New Year’s Day, two other complaints were addressed, and police were called to prevent one impaired person from driving.

Sgt. Starzynski says the campaign against impaired driving is prominent and highly visible in the community.

Meanwhile, the Pincher Creek detachment dealt with the area between Waterton and Lundbreck. According to Cpl. Jeff Feist, there were two impaired driving charges this year, matching last year.

He doesn’t believe there were any roadside suspensions, where licences are suspended for three days due to a certain blood alcohol concentration.

However, Cpl. Feist says some people are still driving while impaired in the Pincher Creek area, and the general number of incidents is still too high.

In Crowsnest Pass, similar to last year, there were no impaired driving charges and no roadside suspensions between Dec. 23 and Jan. 3, Const.

However, during the year, Crowsnest Pass does have an arrest every few weeks for impaired driving. Therefore, like Cpl. Feist in Pincher Creek, Const. McKenna believes Crowsnest Pass must continue to strive to reduce drinking and driving.

That challenge belongs to all of us.

Thank you, Pincher Creek Legion

By Brad Quarin In December, the Pincher Creek Legion showed its gratitude to the Pincher Spray Park Society for its role in running the children’s carnival games during rodeo weekend.

The Legion presented the society with a cheque for $1,000, to be used toward establishing a spray park in Pincher Creek.

Fred White, acting chairman for fair days during rodeo weekend, says the Legion asked the society to help run the games planned by the Legion. The Legion often teams up with youth groups to recruit volunteers, and had heard that the society was seeking ways to raise funds, he says.

Jennifer Draper, co-chairwoman of the spray park group, says the Pincher Creek Legion Kids Carnival included a ring toss, beer pong without beer, and a dunk tank.

Society members donated their time running the games.

The $1,000 given to the society was raised from ticket sales for the carnival games and from the Legion’s charity account, Fred says. Raffle ticket sales throughout the year contributed to the funds.

Jennifer says the $1,000 will go into the society’s main account. In order to build the park correctly, the society’s goal is to raise $500,000.

— Kahlil Gibran, The Prophet It’s been a year since Sandy suddenly passed away from a pulmonary artery hemorrhage on Jan. 17, 2015, at the age of 71. His absence continues to be deeply felt by his wife, Valerie Sherwood; children (Katherine Sharp, Robert Sharp and Rebecca Buote); stepson (Michael Sherwood); grandchildren (Thomas Sharp; Dillon Coppin; Nicholas, Lucas and Alexis Buote; Jane and Claire Sherwood); sister (Joan Sauvé); and many extended family (in-laws, out-laws, and friends).

Sandy was born Bruce Alexander Sharp in Drumheller, Alta., on Feb. 14, 1943, to parents Thomas and Isabel Sharp.

He spent much of his youth in the Medicine Hat and Manyberries area. He was gifted with an aboveaverage intelligence, which, combined with a curiosity about everything and how it worked, led to a life fully experienced.

As a young man, Sandy earned a B.Sc. in animal science at the Montana State University and an M.Sc. in nutrition and pathology at the University of Guelph. His research focused on Experimental Induction of Vitamin E – Selenium Responsive Lesions in Growing Swine. In addition to teaching chemistry at the university, he refined a technique for orbital bleeding, and worked at the Ontario Department of Agriculture as a beef specialist.

Later, as executive secretary of the Canadian Simmental Association, Sandy managed a 20person Calgary office and developed the first record of performance/pedigree for Simmental cattle. In addition to promoting his beloved Simmentals, Sandy travelled extensively to France, Austria, Germany and Italy for Canadian, United Kingdom, American, Mexican and Brazilian clients for whom he managed purebred cattle sales and selected cattle for export.

Sandy was publisher and editor during the first years of the Simmental Scene cattle breed magazine, for which he also served as writer, photographer, and adman.

His writing was informative and thought-provoking, earning him the title of Alberta Simmentaler of the Year in 1979.

In the 1980s, Sandy owned and operated a purebred and commercial cow operation of over 200 head in Fort Macleod. Additionally, Sandy conceptualized and, for over 15 years, operated Bos Graphics, a commercial printing shop in Lethbridge.

Knowledgeable in horticulture, and seeming to know the Latin name for every perennial and herb, Sandy was never far from a greenhouse or a seed catalogue. Repeatedly named Horticulturist of the Year in Lethbridge, Sandy would start seeds and propagate from cuttings and divisions. He preserved the herbs by making and selling his own oil and vinegar retail line. His numerous varieties of hot peppers and tomatoes were sought-after by friends who also eagerly awaited his spectacular yearly flower salads.

With his characteristic charm, goodwill and generosity, Sandy always had an open door and laden table, whether at home or at the Alberta Rose Café in Lundbreck, where for five years as owner and cook he served huge portions of food. During the first three years, he didn’t close the restaurant doors for even one day because “someone might need a bowl of soup.”

After a 1995 trip to Belize, Sandy created his own winning rice-and-beans dish, which family and friends served all weekend to South Country Fair-goers.

Sandy’s creative talents were clearly seen in his love of the arts, specifically pottery and stained glass. He kept his wheel and kiln within arm’s reach, and his pottery was both functional and beautiful. He used his knowledge of chemicals to create outstanding glazes and designs.

As well, the living room always had a corner devoted to his light table and stained glass, where he sat designing and making ornamental and functional objects such as windows, lampshades, jewelry boxes, and pyramid-shaped suncatchers.

At his heart, Sandy had an appreciation for a day’s work, a good supper, close friendship (human or critter), a cheap beer and a simple pipe. As long as Sandy had these in his day, he counted that day as well spent.

Sandy is the smartest man I ever met and, more than anything, I miss our conversations. It seemed he knew a little something about everything and his head was always full of ideas — both practical and creative.

He loved animals (especially his dogs), babies (both two- and four-legged), non-fiction, and CBC Radio.

Sandy explored the world as a lifelong learner: cowboy, scientist, cattle buyer, publisher, entrepreneur, artist, gardener, farmer, storyteller, and adventurer.

For all those who knew and loved him, the world is now a little less interesting.
