My Little Corner

By Erin Fairhurst With the recent passing of our community’s beloved Karelian bear dog Kuma, I’ve noticed myself spending more time this week giving my own dogs some extra scratches and belly rubs.

My husband and I have two dogs — they’re 13 and nine. We let them on our furniture, we plan pet-friendly holidays, we feed them scraps from the dinner table and we give them special treats on their birthdays. Yes, we are “those people.”

But you know what? I think that’s OK. Whether you realize it, or even welcome it, family pets work their way into our lives in so many subtle ways — a haze of animal hair becomes a natural part of your home’s décor, a small spot on your couch is permanently dented from your pet curling up in a favourite spot for an afternoon snooze (even if the couch is off limits), nose prints decorate your front window no matter how often you wipe them off.

Sadly, many pet owners don’t realize how much they’ve come to rely on their pet’s presence until it’s too late.

I’ll never forget being shocked at the level of grief my mom showed after we said goodbye to our family dog,

Rex, when I was in my late teens. Not because I didn’t think Rex deserved to be mourned, but because my mom had spent over a decade complaining about that dog — muttering about the cost of vet appointments, his incessant barking, his bad breath.

Of course she was the one who dutifully brushed his fur when it got matted, bought him geriatric treats when he got older, and pretended she didn’t notice when he hopped onto the foot of the bed in the middle of the night.

At the end of the day, love is love.

One of the hardest parts about losing a pet is feeling like you can’t properly mourn your loss because it was “just” a dog or “only” a cat. As far as I’m concerned, there shouldn’t be any “justs” or “onlys” when it comes to love. When you open yourself up to bonding with an animal, you open yourself up to a lifetime of irreplaceable companionship.

Of course, you open yourself up to other things too: Sure, pets are cute, but let’s not delude ourselves — they can be pretty gross, especially if you have the kind that likes to surprise you with special “presents.”

And yes, they love you uncondition-

ally, but sometimes they express that love with the force of a runaway train — which can be difficult when all you’re trying to do is get through your own front door with your groceries intact.

Pets can be a hassle when it comes to travelling or planning a vacation, they can be a nuisance when you’re busy, and they can take a toll on the ole bank account.

Having a pet isn’t easy to begin with, and being a good pet owner is even harder; but if you commit to your animal the way that it commits to you, it’s worth it.

The best part about allowing a pet to become a family member is that you’ll grow to love it in a way that becomes essential to you. The worst part about allowing a pet to become a family member is that you’ll grow to love it in a way that becomes essential to you — because you know that one day you’ll have to say goodbye.

Though it is sad to see our community in mourning for Kuma, I am proud to see that our collective grief reflects the respect and affection that Kuma deserved from us all. Kuma was brave, loyal and provided a tremendous service to our community.

Rest in peace, Kuma, and thank you.

Families go ape for literacy

By Brad Quarin Lost in the world of books, you can meet some interesting characters.

Children are discovering that experience with Family Literacy Day on Jan. 27, started to promote the importance of reading.

“Kids will stay interested in literacy when they share it with their family,” says Diane deLauw, manager of Crowsnest Community Library. “It’s an important family [activity].”

While certainly important, reading can also be fun, as you could plainly see by how thrilled Crowsnest Pass children were to meet Ivan the gorilla at a school assembly last week.

For a third year, students of Horace Allen School and Isabelle Sellon School are participating in One Book, Two Schools.

The Crowsnest Pass Literacy Foundation’s program allows children of different ages to read a book at home with their families over three weeks.

After each evening of reading, they participate in related activities for possible prizes the next day.

This year, students are reading the children’s novel The One and Only Ivan

by Katherine Applegate.

The foundation chose the novel, about a gorilla and baby elephant who live in a shopping mall. Incredibly, it is inspired by the story of a real gorilla named Ivan who was kept in a mall.

“We thought the true-story aspect would appeal to the older kids, and the younger kids can, of course, enjoy the book,” says Marcy Purcha, program co-ordinator for the foundation.

“It’s almost written like poetry…. It’s a bit of a different style of book than what

we’ve picked before.”

While classes often have their own activities at the schools, Mountain Radio is also actively involved. Children can call in each morning or afternoon to talk about the book, Marcy says.

DJ Courtney Potts told the excited children that callers will then be entered into a draw for two family pizza parties.

Even preschool children will be involved this year, as the Brat Pack at Crowsnest Community Library will have related activities.

Marcy says the foundation also hopes donation cans out in town will raise money to adopt a gorilla at the Calgary Zoo. The money collected will help care for the apes there.

One Book, Two Schools has been the foundation’s most successful program in engaging families, she says.

The applause for last year’s book, Kenny & the Dragon by Tony DiTerlizzi, demonstrates that the program really does get children excited about reading.

Shortly after Family Literacy Day, Crowsnest Pass children can also look forward to a family pyjama party at the Blairmore library on Jan. 29.

The evening will offer stories, games, crafts and milk and cookies, Diane says.

Children who take along their stuffed animals can leave them for a sleepover and see later what they did at the library.

The pyjama party starts at 6:30 p.m., and families can simply show up for the event, which is free. The party runs until 8 p.m.

In Pincher Creek, Canyon School and the municipal library will also be celebrating Family Literacy Day. Keep watching Shootin’ the Breeze to see their efforts to promote reading.

Busy holiday season for Crestview residents Submitted by Charmaine Tienkamp We want to say a very big thank you to everyone who helped out with stuffing the stockings for Christmas morning for our residents here at Crestview Lodge in Pincher Creek. Thanks to the individuals and businesses that made this possible — the residents sure felt the warmth and Christmas spirit from all of you. Bless you all from the bottoms of our hearts!

Also in December, the residents had a chance to sit in on a seminar with our architect as he spoke about the plans for the new lodge. It was wonderfully done. The architect had taped out the size of one of the rooms so we could all picture the size better than on paper.

All of our questions so far were answered and we did like what we heard.

Now we are quite excited to see it started. No word just yet, but cross our fingers it will be soon.

We were blessed with many wonderful people coming into the lodge to spread the Christmas spirit. They came in all sorts of shapes and colours, like the French Grade 1 class of St. Michael’s School. The kids put on a Christmas concert for us. They did a fantastic job and we look forward to seeing them each year.

We also had many carollers come in and sing to us and with us. That is one activity we love to do. Don’t think we would ever be too busy to have anyone come and sing with us. The more the merrier!

Donnie and Barb took the residents on an annual tour of the community to see all the Christmas lights. Now that is a tour they never miss.

When we counted down, we had a balloon drop and then tried to pop the balloons by sitting on them. Now that was funny, watching all the faces as everyone tried to pop the balloons. We laughed till our sides hurt! It was even funnier when they couldn’t pop them but tried and tried till they did.

We wish everyone many blessings throughout the new year!

A little hill that delivers big results

By Erin Fairhurst There’s a growing trend among the young families in Crowsnest Pass: the kids here can ski better than their parents. And that’s all thanks to our little ski hill that could, the Pass Powderkeg.

The Mertz family of Blairmore have been season pass holders for six years. Katherine and Mike Mertz are parents to three busy kids: Silas, 10; Alexandra, 8; and Griffin, 4. Silas started skiing at the tender age of four, and Alex and Griffin were on skis when they were two.

“We go to the hill as a family once a week on average,” says Katherine, “and then the kids will go more with school.”

So are the Mertz kids pretty good skiers?

“I’m still better than my four-year-old,” says Katherine with a laugh. “They’re all just amazing.

All of the kids in this community have some pretty serious skills when it comes to skiing. The hill here is a great opportunity for them.”

Like many families in the Pass, the Mertzes take

advantage of the hill’s early-bird season pass sale so they can hit the slopes all winter long.

“Sometimes we just get out for a run or two, and other times we’ll go for the day,” says Katherine. “We went as a family on Christmas Eve, which was pretty fun.”

Pass Powderkeg’s family-friendly atmosphere of is one of its defining attributes — and this year, the hill’s youth programming is expanding with a new project called Jumps and Bumps. Participants between the ages of seven and 11 will be introduced to the terrain park and the ways to use it. Sessions run Jan. 23, Jan. 30 and Feb 6.

The hill is also hosting a snowboarding event later this winter, and hopes to offer more late-night skiing and extended lodge hours once a month.

“Our season opening on Christmas Eve went well,” says Lyle Hannan, director of community services for Crowsnest Pass. “We had a busy holiday See LITTLE HILL, continued on page 10

Lyle says the renovations to the hill and the new trail connections, implemented over the summer and fall, have been largely well received, especially in terms of improving access to the lower hill from the lodge.

“The changes on the hill are really good,” agrees Katherine. “They make things much easier for beginners.”

She says a run called the Goblin has specifically benefited from the connector trails.

“That used to be a struggle for the younger kids, but now it’s a much smoother run.”

Mother Nature has been kind to Pass Powderkeg this winter. The upper mountain and terrain park opened in early January, and visitors to the hill have been enjoying 1,200 vertical feet of opportunity and varied terrain.

And if you aren’t a skier, don’t forget that the cozy atmosphere of the lodge is the perfect place to enjoy a hot chocolate and a good book.

“Sometimes we just take family walks along the trails,” says Katherine. “Of course in the summer time we go mountain biking. If you don’t ski, there are lots of opportunities for snowshoeing. It’s just such a great atmosphere.”

Learn about Livingstone School ski program

By Brad Quarin In Lundbreck, Livingstone School students have benefited from French, drama and art programs, and now a ski academy will be established in the 2016-17 school year.

Parents, students and members of the general public can learn more about how they can assist the creation of the academy, at an open house. It will be held at the school on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.

Livingstone School hasn’t had a ski academy before, principal Chad Jensen says. It will teach downhill skiing, both racing and freestyle. It will be open to any students who are interested, from beginners to those who may already belong to ski clubs.

The skiing will be done at Castle Mountain Resort, taught by a teacher and external coaches.

The ski academy will tie into courses teaching outdoor and environmental education, and students will receive credit.

Chad says the program has been established to holistically develop a child, teaching skills, leadership and teamwork through experiential learning.

Susan Anne Wakaluk Aug. 15, 1942 – Jan. 12, 2016

It is with incredible sadness that we announce the passing of Susan Wakaluk of Hillcrest Mines, at the Pincher Creek Health Centre, on Jan. 12, 2016, at the age of 73.

When Susan wasn’t busy caring for her family and friends, or driving school bus, she enjoyed gardening, bird watching, collecting rocks along the riverbeds, reading and playing bingo. Never one to miss an opportunity to have fun, she attended the Big Valley Jamboree and Canadian Finals

Rodeo whenever she could.

Sports played a big part in Susan’s life. She enjoyed curling, golfing, coaching and watching baseball. She especially loved to watch all her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren display their talents in activities such as rodeo, hockey, volleyball, basketball, soccer, dance and marathon running.

Looking up into the stands, you could always count on her to be the loudest and proudest cheerleader.

Susan considered herself to be very blessed, and she made sure that she shared her good fortune with others. One of the ways she accomplished this was through her involvement with community organizations such as Citizens on Patrol, the Bellevue Legion Ladies Auxiliary and the Kananaskis Rodeo Association.

Susan’s strong dedication to her community was also a reflection of the pride she felt as a Canadian. Just as she had unconditional love for people, she loved Canada the same way.

Above all else, Susan was devoted to her family. She was at her happiest when with them, and she supported each and every one of them in everything they did.

Susan’s love of life and warmth was infectious, and the effect of one of her hugs remained with you long after the hug itself was over. She believed in seizing every moment you were given and that you should “dance like nobody’s watching.” Her wonderful sense of humour, unlimited patience and sincere compassion will never be forgotten. She was truly a gift to all who knew her.

Left to mourn her passing and celebrate her life are her husband, Allan Wakaluk of Hillcrest Mines; her children, Robin (Scott) Sinclair of Pincher Creek, Darcy (Dawn) Wakaluk of Bellevue, Shelley (Ryan) Kubik of Calgary, Kathy (Rick) Yanco of Blairmore and Tracy (Gary) Eyre of Port Coquitlam, B.C.; her grandchildren, Dakoda (Dan) Kuftinoff, Derrek (Alex Loader) Wenisch, Kelsie (Tyler Zielke) Simpson, Alex Wakaluk, Logan Wakaluk, Brock Wakaluk, Tori Wakaluk, Lauren Kubik, Reid Kubik, Robert Kubik, Meghan (Brad) Harvey and Morgan Yanco; her great-grandchildren, Drake, Kiah, Mikka and Emerson; her extended family; numerous nieces and nephews; as well as the countless friends she made throughout her life.

The memorial service was held at Fantin’s Funeral Chapel in Blairmore on Jan. 17, 2016.

Henrietta (Retta) DeMeyer 1917 - 2016

Henrietta (Retta) DeMeyer was born in Fort Macleod on Nov. 27, 1917, to George and Pearl Hutton.

A few years later they moved to Spring Point, where she attended school and eventually worked at several ranches, where she met Richard (Dick) Everts. They were married in October 1939.

The couple made their home in Pincher Creek and started a family. They had two boys, David and LeRoy, and two girls, Gloria and Sheila. Dick passed away in 1962.

Retta was kept busy raising her young family. Several years later she married Neil DeMeyer. She enjoyed spending her spare time camping with friends, going to new places, meeting new people. Retta belonged to the Good Sams and, even after she was not able to go camping, she attended their outings in the Pincher area. Neil passed away in 2002.

Retta loved it when the family came home. There were lots of cards and games played at the kitchen table.

Retta belonged to the Legion Ladies Auxiliary and was a Legion life member for over 60 years. She became a United Church member in 1959. Retta also belonged to the Over 60 Club, was on the committee of the Medical Alert Society, and a member of the Rebekah Lodge for 40 years. She thoroughly enjoyed socializing with the ladies of the Red Hat Society. In 1992 she was voted Citizen of the Year.

She leaves to mourn: a brother, Earle Hutton of Calgary; sons David (Mary) of Pincher Creek, LeRoy (Eva) of Calgary; daughters Gloria (Gary) Franks of Pincher Creek and Sheila (Pat) Shenton of Lethbridge. She was predeceased by grandson Corey Everts and brother Gordon Hutton. Retta has five grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews and cousins who will miss her greatly.

A memorial service was held on Jan. 12, 2016, at Pincher Creek United Church, with Rev. Janni Belgum officiating.

Change is coming to medicine in Crowsnest Pass

By Erin Fairhurst With the consolidation of the Bellevue, Blairmore and Coleman medical clinics into one brand-new facility in Crowsnest Mall in Blairmore, there’s no question that the face of medicine is changing in Crowsnest Pass.

But according to Bridget Graf, manager of the Crowsnest Medical Clinic, there’s one thing that’s guaranteed to remain the same: “Our commitment to patient care is our number-one priority.”

The new facility will provide offices for nine family doctors, an anesthetist, an orthopedic surgeon and a gynecologist. More services may be added in the future, and the new facility is expected to be completely open, with all of its doctors under one roof, by next Monday.

“We have been moving in stages, so as not to disrupt patient care,” explains Bridget. “So far, things have been going very smoothly.”

The move officially began on Friday, and Bridget says all of the clinics worked together to ensure patient care wasn’t interrupted.

“It was a bit of a juggling act,” she says, “but we’ve put together a solid plan.”

Turtle Mountain Pharmacy, the long-time neighbour of the Bellevue Clinic, is also moving, to the location adjacent to the new clinic. Darsey and Richard Milford, owners of pharmacy, have been in their Bellevue location for 10 years but are excited for the move, as well as to continue serving their longstanding customers and to hopefully meet some new ones, too.

“We’re very excited to see them make the move,” says Bridget. “The location of the new clinic and proximity to the hospital are just a few things that our patients can look forward to.”

The Crowsnest Medical Clinic plans to host an open house once they’ve settled in, but in the meantime will be open to walk-in patients and regular booked appointments, starting Monday, Jan. 25.

“The new facility is practical, functional and will provide people with the services that they need,” says Bridget. “I really like it, it’s all very exciting.”

Crow Snow Riders and the Calgary Snowmobile Club invite you to join us Saturday, Jan. 30, for a STARS and Crow Snow Riders Poker Run Ride.

The ride will be held on the south side (York Creek staging area).

You can preregister Friday night at the Pure Country Bar & Grill in Frank between 7 and 9 p.m. (kids are welcome), or you can register Saturday morning at York Creek staging area starting at 9 a.m. Poker hands are $5 each.

There will be a social held after the ride at Pure Country Bar & Grill (kids are welcome), where we will be raffling off prizes and announcing the poker-hand winners.

Fifty per cent of poker hands will be donated to STARS. The Calgary Snowmobile Club has donated $100,000 to STARS to date! From Pincher Creek to Cranbrook, STARS made 70 calls in the last 2014-15 fiscal year.
