Food bank need continues after busy holiday season

By Brad Quarin The communities of Crowsnest Pass and Pincher Creek demonstrated strong support for their local food banks over the holiday season, but the need is still there.

In Pincher Creek, around 250 Christmas hampers were put together, says Jerrold Visser, program manager at McMan Youth, Family and Community Services.

In Crowsnest Pass, there were 132 requests for food hampers, says Terry Grinevitch, president of the food bank. That’s up 21 per cent from the year before.

While demand was great, local residents, volunteers, schools and organizations made a heroic effort to meet this need and provide holiday meals for many families.

In both communities, a highlight of the season was the arrival of the CP Holiday Train, which stopped at Pincher Station and Coleman in mid December.

During the mini concerts, Canadian Pacific Railway presented the Crowsnest Pass and Junction food banks with cheques for $4,000 each.

This was on top of the 842 pounds of food collected from the crowd in Coleman, says Desiree Simoneau, Crowsnest Pass Food Bank co-ordinator.

At Pincher Station, the Junction food bank collected 1,500 pounds of food. Other businesses

and the Napi Friendship Centre donated at the same time, giving the food banks a healthy boost and creating memories for those who witnessed the spectacle.

This wasn’t the only moment where Pincher Creek showed fantastic support for the food bank.

The Junction and Parent Link Family Centre joined forces with the Pincher Creek Legion to assemble food hampers.

This year, an effort was made to make the food hampers a community project, not just a Legion one, says member Fred White. A committee was set up to co-ordinate the project with representatives from the Legion and Parent Link.

Linda McKinnon, program administrative assistant with Parent Link, says their staff brought in $760 and donations were also received from the Piikani Nation.

The Pincher Creek Lions did their part by selling hotdogs and hamburgers during Countdown to Christmas celebrations, says president Christine Lank. They also collected cash donations during the Stuff a Bus campaign, with many people giving the $50 needed for one hamper. Altogether, the Lions raised $1,200.

Over 50 businesses helped with the hampers by giving cash, food, or volunteer manpower, says Anne Gover, supervisor of McMan. Many individuals and volunteers from various businesses and community organizations helped assemble and

deliver the hampers.

Crow Signs helped out in a unique way, furnishing 40 hoodies to those who donated a turkey, or cash to buy one. Fred says the combined value of the donations was $900, a good chunk of the total $3,000 cost for turkeys.

In Crowsnest Pass, new food bank clients appeared each month as more people moved to the community, Terry Grinevitch says. In addition, a number of people who thought they wouldn’t need food hampers had to apply at the last moment, says co-ordinator Desiree Simoneau.

However, community efforts to aid the food bank had kicked off early. In November, the RCMP, EMS, Crowsnest Pass Fire/Rescue and its mascot Sparky the Fire Dog set up a Charity Checkstop in Blairmore to collect cash and food donations. The effort raised $4,208.53 and this went toward food hampers, Terry says.

Numerous businesses contributed including the Bargain Shop. Their October drive brought in 1,438 pounds of food worth over $2,000. Customers purchased food from the store and donated it.

Teck Coal and Greenhill Mine were just some of the other businesses that donated money or food, Desiree says. Stone’s Throw Cafe raffled off a homemade chest, donated by local craftsman Glen Sprague, raising $760 for the food bank. The See FOOD BANK, continued on page 3

To assemble those hampers, the food bank teamed up with Family and Community Support Services. FCSS raised the funds and bought the food, Desiree says, and the food bank took the applications.

Contributions also came from all schools in Crowsnest Pass, Pincher Creek and Lundbreck.

Led by the school’s social justice group and the grades 7 and 8 health classes, students brought in 470 pounds of food donations plus cash during one

week in December.

The campaign was a competition between classes and groups of staff to bring in the most food. The support staff won, reports teacher Susan Robinson, and the Grade 8 class came in second.

Crowsnest Consolidated High School held its campaign between November and December, with classes marking their bingo sheet as each food item for the food bank was donated by their class.

The winners, Mrs. MacDonald’s Grade 10 class, brought in 140 items. Altogether, CCHS received 500 items says Anna Koevoet, chairwoman of student council.

People can help throughout the year by donating canned goods, breakfast cereals and paper products like toilet paper. Donations can be taken to the food bank in Blairmore during its hours, Mondays and Wednesdays from 5 to 7 p.m. and Thursdays from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

While the need in the new year is hard to project in Pincher Creek, Jerrold says demand for food bank services has gone up 25 per cent across the province.

The most efficient way the community can continue to support the food bank is through cash donations, he says. The Junction can buy in bulk, and $1 can buy three cans of soup.

York Creek Lodge employees earn service awards

By Erin Fairhurst A group of employees at York Creek Lodge were recently recognized for their years of dedicated service to one of our most cherished groups of residents — our seniors.

“We have 40 employees here, and 15 of those 40 have been here for five years or longer,” says Susan Demchuk, the chief operations officer at York Creek Lodge and Tecumseh Manor.

“I think that’s pretty great.”

There are many behind-the-scenes roles within Crowsnest Pass Senior Housing that help to keep the busy establishment ticking along. From

cooks to health aides to custodians to administrative support, each role plays a valuable part in ensuring that residents at York Creek Lodge and Tecumseh Manor get the best care possible.

“This is the first time we’ve presented these service certificates, and it’s been very well received,” Susan says.

“It was something that the board and management have been wanting to do for a while, and I’m really glad we did.”

She hopes the awards will become an annual event.

nest Pass Senior Housing board, was on hand to present the certificates to the group of surprised employees, and a celebratory luncheon followed.

Employees who had worked for Crowsnest Pass Senior Housing for five years or longer received the service awards, and some of them were long overdue.

“We have a cook who’s been here for 29 years,” says Susan, who is no slouch in the years-ofservice department, either.

“I’ll have been here 36 years next month,” she says with a smile.

“We have a really great group of people here.”

My Little Corner

By Brenda Shenton This Wednesday is Family Literacy Day. How will you celebrate?

Created in 1999 by ABC Life Literacy Canada, it was initiated to encourage literacy-related family activities. I must admit, initially I never thought about the importance of family literacy as a concept, but fortunately I was busy living it.

Much of a child’s learning takes place before entering school. Literacy skills begin at birth and the most influential teachers surrounding that baby are in the home. Actively engaging your children within their family circle prepares them to use language to express themselves and develop techniques for lifelong learning.

Family circles often include Grandma and Grandpa, who know family literacy is nothing new and actively encourage at every turn. My husband’s grandmother Clarice Warren was known to impart this pearl of wisdom upon us: “Your books should be falling apart because they are read so much. Books are not for sitting on the shelf, they are for reading.”

As a volunteer tutor with the PAL Project (Partnership Approach to Literacy) here in Pincher Creek, I learned that early literacy skills are the foundation and building blocks of learning. And it doesn’t have to be in the classroom.

Family literacy can happen every day during routine tasks: setting the table, following a recipe, cleaning up the toys.

These everyday events help children develop their literacy skills, which in turn help them become active and engaged participants in the larger community.

When my children were small, I loved seeing the learning in action. In our family we began with notes — first drawing pictures to portray a message and then advancing to text as their skills developed.

My children loved writing notes. Nothing is quite as near and dear to me as the notes I received from them when they were young. I have a shoebox full of them, and it was difficult to choose one for the photo

It still brings a smile to my face every time I see it. I received this one morning a few days after first using the phrase, when I had tucked them all in for the night. It melted my heart. Still does.

Take the time today to share literacy with someone you love.

Suggested family activity – How many words can you make from the phrase “literacy chautauqua”? Thanks to Kathy Day Mantle and Muriel McPherson for this activity, which I did with my children when they were young. Hint: you will need a large piece of paper.

She shunted cars of coal and made up trains in rotation.

She huffed and puffed but remained composed, And never missed work until the mine was closed.

She had no idea of what was in store.

Then she was sold to the collieries in Blairmore.

From 1939 to 1956, Maude was back to her old tricks.

Town seeks support to become an Axia community Submitted by Town of Pincher Creek The Town of Pincher Creek has been encouraging residents to express their interest in having a company install fibre-optic Internet in Pincher Creek.

The town was aiming to have 30 per cent of residents (just short of 600 addresses) express interest in fibre by the end of December 2015 so that Pincher Creek would be considered as a 2016 Axia community.

We haven’t quite hit the 30 per cent target yet. However, David Skabar, the residential sales manager at Axia, is encouraging us “to build off the

momentum in the community to this point.”

David advised that Axia will be “using these winter months to identify our 2016 communities.”

Axia presented to town council at the Nov. 4 committee-of-the-whole meeting and, at the Nov. 9 council meeting, administration was directed

to work with Axia Medianet Corp. to explore community interest in the provision of a fibre-optics service for town residents and businesses.

Axia is in the final stages of completing an install in Nanton and has successfully completed installs in Vulcan and Nobleford. More information on its current systems can be found at www.axia.com.

By Brad Quarin This Wednesday, Jan. 27, is Family Literacy Day. It has been designated as such by the non-profit group ABC Life Literacy Canada to promote the importance of reading.

While Crowsnest Pass children and their families continue reading The One and Only Ivan and look forward to the family pyjama party at the Blairmore library on Friday, Pincher Creek children will also be celebrating.

Pincher Creek’s Mirror Mirror Salon got the ball rolling last Friday, offering free haircuts to children eight and under for reading a story to the staff.

This is the first time the salon has done this, employee Danielle Homme says. The idea came from a barbershop in the United States. The Pincher Creek promotion was a success, as that Friday was completely booked with appointments for 10 children.

Canyon School will be launching the reading challenge, starting this Wednesday.

“It’s about bringing families together,” says teacher Lexi Mensaghi.

Children will have until next Wednesday to read at home with their families and track the time they spend with their noses in a book.

Each class adds together the minutes its students spend reading, and the class that reports the most minutes will win the challenge, Lexi says. The prize will be money to buy new books for the class, with a selection offered by Scholastic.

Canyon School is also welcoming grandparents to the school on Wednesday afternoon to read with groups of children.

As if that weren’t enough, this week each student will receive a bingo card that can be filled by performing five activities, including reading to their parents or finding a book in the library. Prizes will be given out at the beginning of February.

Story time at Pincher Creek and District Municipal Library this Wednesday at 10 a.m. will be centred on the importance of reading, says Sahra Nodge, community outreach co-ordinator.

Story time sees staff and children under six reading, singing, and working on crafts. This week will include some parent education, as the group will talk about the importance of reading with your children for 15 minutes each day.

Whether reading a book or a recipe or playing a game involving literacy, spending that 15 minutes together builds a child’s language skills, Sahra says.

And those are skills that help build a child’s whole future.
