Local dental team treats children in the Philippines

By Brad Quarin At the end of 2015, four staff members of Ascent Dental reached far beyond Pincher Creek, extending their work into an impoverished region of the Philippines.

Dr. Greg Steed, Aline Wenisch, Brenda Goasdaue and Susan Aker recently shared this experience with the Pincher Creek Rotary Club.

From mid November to Dec. 6, the four performed humanitarian dental work with the Semiahmoo Dental Outreach team on the Philippine island province of Siquijor.

“It’s a moving experience to provide to people who don’t ask for help but obviously need it, and appreciate it,” Susan said. “Their graciousness is a very rewarding gift to receive in return.”

“It was an honour to travel with Dr. Steed and my co-workers,” Brenda said. “My heart is forever changed, and I’d love to do it again.”

During the time that they were in Siquijor, five visiting dentists,

17 dental assistants and 12 nurses treated 394 children between seven and 13, all for free. They performed 896 fillings and 300 extractions.

They worked out of a clinic at a local school, and treated students of the school, while others were bused in.

The program is sponsored by the International College of Dentistry and the Rotary Club, with donations from dental suppliers. Dr. Steed paid for the travel.

In 35 years of dentistry, he had long imagined following the example of other colleagues working in the Third World. Then, at a convention, he happened to be seated near Dr. Ken Stones, who organizes the Semiahmoo Dental Outreach. They talked a bit, and Dr. Steed was impressed by his project.

An old workhorse returns to Crowsnest Pass

By Brad Quarin A piece of Crowsnest Pass mining history made its way back home in late January, and will now be showcased for the public to enjoy.

A Hunslet diesel locomotive was moved to the Bellevue Underground Mine, thanks to the City of Fernie, three companies and the efforts of local mining historian John Kinnear.

“It is yet another opportunity to interpret the fascinating history of coal mining in Crowsnest Pass,” he says. It will tell more of the mining story, at a unique museum dedicated to that purpose.

The Hunslet is of particular significance. “It’s an important piece of equipment, it adds to our

collection, but more importantly, objects are just objects until you have the people around them who operated them,” says Elaine Hruby, executive director of the Bellevue Mine.

“Because the Crowsnest Pass was founded on coal mining, it’s an important part of our culture,” she says. “Bringing in a piece like this, it’s more about the people and the memories around it.”

The Bellevue Mine hasn’t had an engine like this before, though it does have a few coal cars.

Engines like these, built in England and weighing 10.5 tons with an output of 60 horsepower, are rare today. Many wound up as scrap or were abandoned inside mines.

John says the Hunslets towed trips of coal cars inside Vicary Mine, north of Coleman, until the mid 1960s. The Hunslet engines worked in tandem and combined their 17-car trips into a 34-car double trip, which was brought to the outside coal dump via a larger diesel.

There may not be many veteran miners around who worked with this particular engine, but John says it was fun to drive one. You couldn’t get lost since it was on a track, and it was important work removing the coal from each chute quickly so the miners could keep producing.

WORKHORSE, continued from page 4 purchased by the City of Fernie to become static exhibits, but were eventually removed from their street locations and stored in the city’s municipal yard. They caught John’s eye five years ago when he was driving by and saw them looking abandoned and unwanted.

John says he “challenged the City of Fernie to consider donating one to the Bellevue Underground Mine.” It didn’t seem like Fernie had any use for the Hunslets, and with two, John figured the city could spare one.

In June 2010, Fernie city council approved the request.

Still, there was the problem of moving the engine from Fernie to Bellevue.

The Crowsnest Pass Ecomuseum Trust Society, which is responsible for the Bellevue Underground Mine, approached the Australian mining company Riversdale Resources for help.

The company thought it was important, says Keith Bott, community liaison for Riversdale Resources.

“There’s so much here that Crowsnest has to offer, and if there’s any way that that can be built on, or expanded or developed a little bit more, the better,” he says.

“They’re excited about having this here.”

Riversdale Resources had been in communication with many other organizations in its quest to build a new mine, so it reached out to them regarding the Hunslet, he says.

Triple T Energy Services and Mammoet both stepped up to the challenge, offering a truck and crane from Pincher Creek to make the move.

With their help, the Hunslet was placed on a specially set up display track outside Bellevue Underground Mine, with plans to place coal cars on either side of it.

Ron Hruby, vice-chairman of the society, says the mine will need to add rebuilt engine covers to the Hunslet and will likely repaint it yellow.

The project to restore the Hunslet will probably take $10,000, so some fundraising will be required, Ron says.

No specific events to raise the money are planned yet. Elaine says that a priority for the museum right now is to restore the mine portal.

My Little Corner Today is one of those days when I find myself staring at this blank space, unsure of how to get started.

I’ve unexpectedly been away from my desk for almost three weeks and, while it’s good to be back, getting into the swing of things has been a bit overwhelming.

It’s been made much easier by the awesome people who make up our Shootin’ the Breeze team.

I’m grateful for the different skills and personalities each staff member brings to the table. We all have strengths and weaknesses and we don’t always agree, but each week we all come together to share with you the positive things happening in our neighbourhood.

It means the world to me.

The saying “When the cat’s away, the mice will play” isn’t one that comes to mind when I’m away from the office.

This has been my longest absence and was one none of us expected.

It’s also the first time Cary, my brother and co-worker, and I have been away at the same time, which posed some additional challenges. Between the two of us we wear many hats.

Everyone stepped up quickly here and it made a world of difference.

Brad, Erin and Brenda accepted the challenge to generate pieces for this corner. Each came up with topnotch content and I think we should make a point of switching things up every now and then in the future.

Jessica and Erin held a sales meeting and came up with new ideas through their brainstorming.

Jessica also covered the front office on days when I’m usually here to help, and did many things out of the scope of her sales position.

I know everyone did, but a little birdie told me that Jessica stepped out of her comfort zone and truly went the extra mile on several occasions.

Gary, Lily and Stan dealt with a delayed day of deliveries with their typical good humour when the Lethbridge Herald driver ran out of gas getting here.

Brenda and Brad worked late hours proofreading to meet our Monday evening production deadlines.

Cary came back to look after our commercial printing orders and prepare for month-end work.

Thanks to technology, I was able to look after designing the ads and laying out pages from afar.

I could go on and on about the tasks that were handled efficiently and effectively.

For this, I am grateful to everyone whose name appears on the masthead below. All of them went above and beyond their job descriptions to be sure you received a paper in your hands for the last three weeks of January.

Thank you. My gratitude is sincere.

By Ritch Braun Three Passtrak athletes competed in a total of eight events at the Dino Classic track meet, producing three lifetime-best performances and bringing home a bronze medal. The meet took place in Calgary on Jan. 10.

Clara Websdale was Passtrak’s top athlete of the meet. In the 10-and-under age group, she ran the fastest 60-metre race of her life, in 11.52 seconds, for an eighth-place finish. She also ran the fastest 150 metres of her life, clocking 29.35 seconds for seventh place. She then ran the 600metre race for the first time, where she finished third in two minutes 35.24 seconds.

Paige Richards ran three races in the 13-year-old girls category. She ran a personal-best time of of 9.37 seconds in the 60 metres for ninth place. She then completed the 150 metres in 24.08 seconds for 10th place. Her final race was the 600 metres, where she placed fourth in 2:19.54.

Passtrak’s third athlete was Ethan Richards, who represented the club in the 16- and 17-yearold boys category. He finished fifth in the 60 metres in 7.62 seconds, just shy of a personal best. His other event was the 300 metres, where he earned another fifth-place result by crossing the finish line in 40.28 seconds — setting a new Passtrak club by almost two full seconds.

Classroom on Wheels on the way

By Brad Quarin Contrary to what you may have heard about the purported rural hobby of cow tipping, a cow — when down — can rise again.

That’s exactly what the Alberta Prairie Classroom on Wheels, or COW Bus, has done. The bus, which provides books and activities for the benefit of families with children aged six and under, was expected in Pincher Creek and Crowsnest Pass in November.

That went out the window when the bus was rear-ended while on the road. Nobody

was hurt, but the bus has only just been repaired, says Annie Steward at the Pincher Creek Community Adult Learning Council.

The council was able to reschedule the COW Bus for February.

“We’re very excited,” Annie says.

The bus is expected in Pincher Creek on Tuesday. It will be at the Parent Link Centre from 10 a.m. to noon, the library from 1 to 3 p.m., and Children’s World Daycare from 3 to 6 p.m.

In Blairmore, it is expected outside Crowsnest Community Library from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Wednesday.

“It could be a nice little date night,” says Jennifer Draper, co-chairwoman of the society.

Huddlestun Senior Centre News

By Joyce McFarland I keep thinking as a senior, and an old one at that. There is a jumble of unconnected pieces in the Janus-faced puzzle that forms society’s picture of seniors today. I have a problem with the photos in all the magazines, brochures and computer “prospects” that depict seniors who look like a mature Debbie Reynolds or a silver-haired Paul Newman.

Most of them are adoring couples with perfect teeth who are gung-ho for the beach or the ski hill. Some of the men look like well-preserved retired ranchers, and nary a one of them has a touch of arthritis.

Most of the women look like they could give Suzanne Somers a run for her money.

On the flip side are the coarse jokes — some cruel — about frail, elderly people, pictured as stooped over, walking only with the aid of a cane or a walker. Portrayed in unbecoming clothes with a lack of confidence and self-worth, it is a far cry from respect for white hair.

Neither is a truly honest picture or presentation of the facts and, to me, the distortions are almost unhealthy. It is not the facts of life that upset me, it is the distortions that get my goat.

There is a huge, active middle ground of ordinary seniors that the media and geriatric gurus never mention. We are very fortunate in this area to have Shootin’ the Breeze, which, every week, informs its readers of the real people and the real reasons why we are blessed to live in this community.

Although we have our good share of every age group, I notice that the majority are seniors, with lots of problems of their own, who have given the time, done the work, made good things happen. No need for glossy pictures or snide remarks about the walker; good age and best effort is happy and content in its own skin.

However, even the Good Samaritan had idle time on his hands between good deeds. Enter the Huddlestun Senior

Centre! Our group is enjoying some small success in meeting and greeting new people, offering different programs for a trial run and arranging social coffee breaks on Wednesday mornings twice a month.

We invite those of you who are not involved in too many formal organizations to visit our more informal group and converse with new friends, find new topics while you relax and put your feet up, so to speak.

President John Hancock’s newsletter and the February calendar are now available at the centre. The next board meeting — on Friday, Feb. 19, at 10 a.m. — would be a good time for you to come and listen in and look over our nice building on Main Street, next to the hockey rink.

Of course, we hope that when you have broken the ice, if any, at a few of the programs, you will agree that the $20 a year membership is a good deal; much cheaper than time wasted on bushing for coffee every day.

Learn to do your part against invasive plants and animals

By Brad Quarin Invasive species and the threats they pose to the environment and people’s health are a major problem in many places, but are also a concern here at home.

As part of the winter speaker series at Pincher Creek and District Municipal Library, Kelly Cooley will be sharing a local and regional view of the issue.

His presentation, Stop Invasive Species in Your Tracks, will come to the library on Tuesday at 7 p.m. He hopes it will make people think about what they can do differently to help with these problems.

“We can all be part of the solution,” he says.

Kelly is drawing from Play Clean Go, an

educational and outreach program on invasive species management.

He has been involved in invasive species management, particularly weed control, since the mid 1980s, and now owns the environmental consultation business CoolPro Solutions.

The presentation is not about weeds alone, but also about non-native animals such as the Norway rat, which has the potential to be an invasive animal species in our region.

The PowerPoint presentation will feature photos and a look at different types of invasive plants and animals. Attendees will learn about how humans spread the species, and what they can do differently for positive change.

Science fair showcases student learning and imagination

by Livingstone School students at this year’s science fair.

The young scientists clearly let their imaginations run wild, with a high level of participation and a great deal of effort put into the work. There were so many fascinating experiments that judges had to award several ties, says teacher Kathy Rast.

Christmas bird count Submitted by Pat Lucas Crowsnest Conservation’s birding committee had wonderful weather for our Christmas count day — calm and just below freezing — making it much easier to get out of cars and walk, or listen from a vantage point. And the birds were out and about too.

Some highlights: — Thirty-six species total on count day. This is an all-time high for our count.

— Three new species were added: Canada goose, killdeer and golden-crowned kinglet.

— Nine species set new highs for numbers: wild turkey, Eurasian collared dove, northern flicker, blue jay, Clark’s nutcracker, American dipper, dark-eyed junco, pine grosbeak and red crossbill.

— Killdeer!

— Sixteen count participants! A few watched feeders or small areas but we had good field coverage this year. This is great for a small community such as ours.

— Peter Sherrington gets the award for longest distance and time on foot — 6½ hours hiking along the Crowsnest River from Burmis to East Hillcrest Bridge. Apparently, that stretch is where the dippers (and river otters) hold their winter convention.

Thank you to everyone for coming out. Since we do not have the people resources to scour the countryside exhaustively for this count, we like to focus on what we can do: have a fun outing, discovering our winter birds with friends.

• Photos must have been taken within two years before the entry date, and may not previously have won any awards.

• Prints may be in colour or black and white, with a minimum size of 5 x 7”. Photos may be mounted on construction paper or bristol board. Framed works can not be accepted. Please write your name and a title on the back.

• Images may not contain obscene, provocative, defamatory, sexually explicit, objectionable or inappropriate content.

• Consent must be given by people portrayed as the subject.

• There is no limit to the number of entries per person. Entry fee is $10 per photo and each photo must have its own entry form.

• Fees are accepted by cash or cheque made out to Crowsnest Pass Allied Arts or Shootin’ the Breeze.

• Judging criteria includes originality and creativity, composition and photographic quality. The decisions of the judges are final and winners will be notified by phone or email on Feb. 10.

• Cash prizes will be awarded for each category based on the number of entrants – 100% of entry fees will be paid out with prizes awarded for first, second and third place in each category.

• By submitting this entry, the photographer agrees to abide by contest rules and consents to allow Shootin’ the Breeze to use, reuse, publish and re-publish the photo, in whole or in part, always in conjunction with credit to the photographer.
