By Brad Quarin In a village with a small population, an active club or organization can make a huge difference.

That is what the agricultural society is for Hill Spring — a progressive and effective community group.

This is reflected in the changed face of Main Street, which features a large community centre.

Hill Spring, located 43 kilometres southeast of Pincher Creek, boasts an ag society with 150 members.

“We’re a very active society, and we probably have one of the biggest memberships in the society around,” says Kelly Young, who became president in November 2014.

The Statistics Canada 2011 census lists a population of only 186 for Hill Spring, but Kelly believes there must be more than that.

A small population can actually help build membership in a group, since everyone knows each other, she says.

Currently, the ag society is working with Grade 9 students planning a banquet for May or June, to raise funds for a student trip to the Alberta legislature. It’s hoped that busing and admission will be covered for 22 students.

However, Kelly says the ag society’s biggest achievement has been the expansion of the community centre last year.

Larry Gibb was president of the ag society while the group worked to make this possible.

He says there was a centre there before, in use for many years. However, the building has essentially doubled in size, now at 40 by 80 feet.

The change came about after the Bide a Wee quilters group approached the ag society, looking for a place to keep a longarm quilting machine.

“We thought it was a worthwhile project,” Larry says.

The ag society decided the best place to keep one would be at the community centre, but this would require a larger building.

The group took the idea to village council, whose members were excited by the idea.

The cost of the expansion was $300,000. The ag society played a leading role in applying for grants and securing contractors, Larry says.

The cultural society, which is a seniors group, and village council applied for grants as well. The quilters group also made and sold quilts to raise cash.

Much of the work was done by local contractors, eventually yielding a remodelled kitchen and bathrooms in addition to the larger hall.

The building is now well equipped to host community groups, family reunions, family dinners, visiting business groups and the irrigation district members.

Aside from helping Hill Spring achieve a bigger and better community centre, Kelly says society members hold a pancake breakfast and ranch rodeo on Canada Day every year. Recently the society renovated the rodeo grounds and it continues the maintenance of the grounds and the fencing.

The group offers numerous scholarships for students and hosts spring and fall socials, often consisting of dinners for the whole community.

My Little Corner Friday night ended with a bang.

After enjoying the Windy Hollow Players performance at Cowley, I was relaxing with a good book and a hot bath. It was about 11 p.m. and the wind howled loudly around my house.

Suddenly there was a huge crash and the room went black. With my heart thumping wildly, I waited a few minutes to see if the lights would come back on. No such luck.

I pulled on pyjamas, grabbed a flashlight and tentatively peeked through the living room drapes.

For a moment I saw nothing, but then a light shone back toward the window. At first I thought it was a reflection, but realized quickly it was someone outside directing their beam my way.

This spooked me a bit. Did I really want to go out into the dark, raging night to see who it was?

I didn’t, but I did.

I opened the door and saw Barb Blachford, climbing over the low fence that separates our yards.

She directed me to the driveway, which was a mess of broken tree and power lines that had been ripped right off our houses.

We called 911 to report the issue and waited for help to arrive. I saw deputy fire chief Pat Neumann’s truck stop, but it was several houses up the street.

A fire truck soon pulled up behind him. I was waving my arms and flashlight but was blocked in the driveway by the debris. There was no point in shouting out — the wind would simply have carried my voice away.

After a few minutes they pulled out. Forgetting that I was in my PJs, I jumped the fence to cut through Blachfords’ yard and ran to the corner.

When coming around the block behind us, Pat’s eye caught the flashlight I was waving in the air.

Soon we were congregated in front of the house.

We were pelted by rocks as the wind roared with force I’ve never felt before. It was difficult to stand upright.

Pat and the responding members of Pincher Creek Emergency Services cleared the way for Fortis with help from a chainsaw.

A short while later, Greg Chartier arrived to restore our power. After snapping his photo, I was too nervous to watch – he was up on a ladder and the wind continued to howl. About 2½ hours after the big bang, the lights were back on.

Sincere thanks to Pat, Greg and the emergency workers who were disrupted from their evening to help us out — we sincerely appreciate it.

I’d like to say that I picked the rocks from my hair, washed the dirt from my eyes and went to sleep, but I was far too full of adrenaline for that. I was worried, terrified actually, the rest of the tree would come down. With every little noise, I jolted upright in fear.

By the light of day on Saturday it was somewhat less ominous. But, when the wind blows, as it continues to, the entire tree moves.

The different photo angles show where a substantial chunk is missing. The heavy lean toward the houses is why Barb and I are both sleep deprived.

This grand old conifer will be cut down Tuesday morning. Only then do I anticipate a good night’s sleep.

Looking back, there are some comical moments from a stressful weekend. I don’t hop even low

fences or run, ever. My poor mom will also be embarrassed that I was outside in my pyjamas (again).

Environment Canada did not have data available for Pincher Creek as of Monday morning, but the wind warning sign at the junction of highways 3 and 22 reported posts of 136 kilometres per hour at that time Friday night.

The senior centre will have priority of use, but other groups will also be able to access them. John thinks this is a good idea, as the projector and laptop will be used more this way.

All of the local recipients are appreciative of the support.

The fall 2015 grants does not mark the end of the Community Foundation’s mission. Caitlin reminds community groups that the next deadline to apply for grants is Feb. 26.

New transit service launched in Crowsnest Pass

By Brad Quarin Moving to Crowsnest Pass from a city, where you have relied on public transportation, can be a bit of a culture shock.

Fortunately, it will be easier for everyone to get around the Pass now that the expanded transit service has launched.

“This is a real great opportunity to bring our community together and offer a service to the residents,” says Mayor Blair Painter. “I’m really hopeful our residents use this service and it will grow.”

The Town Rounder will continue to run on Mondays and Tuesdays for seniors and people with disabilities. However, this bus will be open to everyone from Wednesday to Friday.

Youth are among those who can benefit from the expansion, says Kim Lewis, the Family and Community Support Services programmer. The bus will have a bike rack and will be equipped to accommodate skis and other sporting equipment. One stop will drop passengers at Pass Powderkeg and Pete’s Park.

While many youth can ride the bus without their parents, this isn’t recommended for children seven and under, Kim says. Children five and under ride for free, but only with adult supervision.

The change came about to make transit service more efficient, Mayor Painter says. Opening the service to everyone will help keep transportation within what the budget allows. He hopes that, with increased use, the municipality can run it seven days a week.

The bus runs Wednesdays to Fridays from 1:23 p.m. to 9:23 p.m., offering a ride for $3 per passenger. Punch cards for 10 trips are also available for $24.

On Mondays and Tuesdays, the charge for the Town Rounder is $4, since door-to-door service and help with groceries is provided, Kim says.

A schedule is available on the municipal website.

Jerrold Visser, program manager of McMan Youth, Family and Community Services, which is responsible for the food bank, says he is very thankful for the cheque, received in late January.

Pincher Creek Walmart employees raised money through bake sales and chose the Junction as the beneficiary, he says.

Lisa Lyczewski, Walmart assistant store manager, says the funds raised were

matched by Walmart Canada.

Walmart is a regular supporter of the Junction, because the store’s staff feel it is a very worthy local cause, she says.

Donations are made to the food bank four times a year.

Jerrold says the money goes toward the purchase of milk, eggs, bread and meat for the weekly food hampers. In January, the food bank distributed 125 hampers.

While the Junction isn’t sure about this month’s needs, he notes that food banks across Alberta are seeing an increase in demand.

Museum fosters community connections Submitted by Crowsnest Museum and Archives The Crowsnest Museum is at it again with our Connecting Communities program. Partnering with New Horizons and the federal government, the museum is proud to bring photos of Crowsnest Pass out into the community for people to view, and hopefully help identify local people and places.

This is a great, fun way to get involved in our community’s heritage. We really want to reach out to those in our community who know a lot about our heritage.

We’re thrilled to have people of all ages participate, but we hope so see many seniors come out. It is a lot of fun to look at these photos, sometimes spanning over 100 years!

The free program changes topics every two months and is hosted by local businesses and organizations. In 2016 we have already hosted three successful sessions and are looking forward to our next one, Feb. 18 at the Stone’s Throw Café, from 2 to 4 p.m. We also have March and April dates ready to go.

Jack Simpson Open track meet results Submitted by Ritch Braun Three Passtrak athletes competed in seven events and produced four lifetime-best performances at the Jack Simpson Open track meet, held Jan. 31 at the University of Calgary.

Clara Websdale represented the Crowsnest Pass club in the girls 10-and-under age group.

She placed 15th in the 60-metre sprint in 12.41 seconds.

In the 150-metre sprint she placed 15th as well, finishing the race in 31.64 seconds. Her third event was the 1,000-metre race, where she earned a fifth place with a time of five minutes 11.26 seconds.

Paige Richards had the best track meet of her short career so far.

She ran the fastest 60-metre of her life, in 9.36 seconds, for 11th place in the 13-year-old girls category. Then she proceeded to run the fastest 150-metre of her life as well, in 22.89 seconds, for 12th place.

Ethan Richards also had the best meet of his life so far. He ran a personal best of 7.54 seconds in the 16- and 17-year-old boys 60-metre sprint for sixth place. He then ran the fastest 300-metre race of his life in 40.18 seconds.

Passtrak was back in action in Edmonton on Friday and Saturday. Stay tuned for the results.

Wintervention picks up steam with new activities

By Brad Quarin In the dead of winter, Crowsnest Pass comes alive.

The community will celebrate Wintervention, its fourth annual winter carnival, on Feb. 19 and 20. This year there will be several new events, courtesy of new sponsors.

“We hope everybody will come out and support the various groups and events,” says Wendy Valley, a Wintervention co-ordinator.

“It seems, every year, it gains more and more momentum…. It’s something different, something to do, and something to break up our winter.”

Among the new and rather distinctive additions is a ukulele jam, preceded by lessons, at the Blairmore Elks Hall on Feb. 19 at 7 p.m.

A member of the Wintervention committee happened to know Alberto San Martin, a ukulele instructor from Calgary, and approached him about participating in the carnival. He agreed to come and hold ukulele lessons and a concert.

Those interested can make a donation to the Crowsnest Pass Food Bank and preregister by calling Randall at 403-563-0183. Fifteen ukuleles will be provided.

Activities at Blairmore’s Gazebo Park on Feb. 20 will also include a mix of the usual and the unique.

At 11 a.m., there will be a fat bike demo. A fat bike is an off-road bicycle with large tires, which can be ridden through snow. The demo is sponsored by CogNation Cyclery, Brok’N Spoke Bike Shoppe, Ascent Cycle and United Riders of Crowsnest.

The staple frying-pan toss at noon and human dog sled race at 1 p.m. will be followed by a novel lumberjack demonstration at 3 p.m.

The demo will consist of people chopping wood, throwing axes and using chainsaws. As a former competitor in woodsmen events, organizer Marina Irwin was inspired to add this. She envisions turning the demo into a competition in future years.

At 2 p.m., Orpheum Theatre will also screen the latter-day children’s classic Finding Nemo, with admissions donated to the Crowsnest Cultural and Recreation Society.

Among the cornerstones of Wintervention present again this year is the Sole Survivor Foot Race, starting from the Blairmore Lions Hall at 10:30 a.m. on Feb. 20.

Preregistration for the human dog sled race can be made through Rick Valley at 403-5644479.

The event will be capped by the dinner and dance at the Blairmore Elks Hall at 6 p.m. on Feb. 20. The evening, in support of the Crowsnest Cultural and Recreation Society, will carry a new theme, Into the Future.

Attendees can let their imaginations run wild in choosing their costumes.

This event can host 200, with tickets available at Blairmore Scotiabank.

The evening is meant to help realize the society’s vision of establishing a new recreation centre for Crowsnest Pass. Wendy says the group has received positive feedback and is “moving forward” with its ambitious plans.

Aside from the dinner and dance, the weekend will offer several events focusing on food.

On Feb. 19, the Blairmore Legion will serve dinner at 5 p.m. while the Bellevue Legion holds its supper at 6.

Feb. 20 will kick off with a pancake breakfast at the Blairmore Lions Pride Hall at 8 a.m.

Patrons of the art of chili can then grab lunch at the 12th annual Chili Bowl Festival at Crowsnest Pass Public Art Gallery at 11 a.m. For $12 per adult and $7 per child 10 and under, you can enjoy a good meal of chili and take home your bowl.

One group joining Wintervention this year is the 1st Crowsnest Pass Girl Guides, who will serve hotdogs at Gazebo Park at noon on Feb. 20.

Last but not least, don’t forget to stop by the art gallery during Wintervention to see the entries for the Winter in Alberta photo contest.

The competition is sponsored by Crowsnest Pass Allied Arts and Shootin’ the Breeze.

Winning photos will be featured in the Breeze.
