To start up his resort, Mr. Klaas approached local investors. Some potential investors rejected the proposal because they felt West Castle Valley didn’t have the ideal conditions. Nevertheless, Mr. Klaas eventually secured $10,000.

One of the original shareholders was Brian Wright’s father, Bill Wright.

Brian has been skiing at Castle since 1966. He was only six when West Castle Ski Resort opened, and his dad taught him how to ski. The family went skiing every weekend.

Brian says the resort has seen tremendous change since it opened, and has only gotten better.

In 1966, it had only three T-bar lifts and there were fewer trails to ski on. Since that time, the T-bars have been replaced by chairlifts and the available terrain has tripled. The resort has since opened the upper mountain.

Skier Don Haavardsrud feels one of the most important additions since the opening is Huckleberry Lift on Haig Ridge, allowing access to more gentle terrain.

Steven says Castle in the ’60s featured “a beautiful wooden chalet” used as a day lodge, and offering rooms to rent. Meals were served there and the resort also had a rental store.

“It was a startup operation and small compared

to other places at that time like Lake Louise and Norquay,” he says.

Another big change over the years has been the number of homes built at the base of the mountain, Brian says. He believes there must be 90 there, and the community has established its own firefighting and lagoon systems.

Fraser Stewart has skied at Castle since “Day 3” in 1966, and is currently president of Castle Mountain Community Association.

He says the cabins were built in the late 1990s, replacing a “hodgepodge” of trailers housing skiers.

The cabins are more permanent residences for regular skiers such as himself, and he has lived there since 2008.

The resort was tested in January 1977, when a crack in a fireplace caused the day lodge to burn down, Steven says.

It didn’t end the ski season, as the staff used Atco trailers as substitutes for the lodge. However, there were few weekday skiers, and the next year there was insufficient snow to open the mountain.

Given the financial strain of operating the resort, the Town and Municipal District of Pincher Creek stepped in and took over management. The move was controversial, since the mountain was outside the town, Steven says.

Don Haavardsrud served as president of the West Castle Management Committee under the

MD, and has personally skied at Castle since 1978.

In the mid 1990s, management was transferred to shareholders who owned cabins at the base of the mountain, Don says.

Over the years, hundreds of memories have been forged at Castle Mountain for Brian and his family. He taught his children how to ski there, and he says his daughter Kristin grew up there.

Both of his children also took a national training program, inspired by Canadian Olympic skier Nancy Greene, that teaches youth essential skiing skills.

Now, Brian is taking his grandson, age two, to Castle Mountain Resort.

He loves the mountain for its proximity to Pincher Creek and its position on top of the Canadian Rockies.

While the location is certainly important, Steven says that people have been crucial to Castle Mountain’s story.

“It’s the passion of the people who live at, ski on and love the place that have kept it going,” he says.

One of those people who won’t be able to attend the 50th anniversary celebration is Paul Klaas, who passed away in 2003. However, his legacy lives on.

The room is based on Snoezelen rooms in Europe, developed for patients with autism, brain injuries or lack of sensory skills, Connie says. Rooms such as these are designed to offer a controlled multisensory environment.

The one in Brocket was built by Ron Forrest, who has built such rooms across Alberta and British Columbia, inspired by his own son and his needs, says Connie.

The sensory room is located in Jagger Red Young Man’s former classroom.

Jagger is a special-needs student who is leaving the school this year.

It is called Jagger’s Room or Aaattsistaihpiyiwa in his honour. Aaattsistaihpiyiwa is Blackfoot for rabbit dancer, a name given to Jagger by an elder. Jagger was present at the grand opening.

During the event, Jesse Plain Eagle told four stories about his own good luck. According to Blackfoot custom, this should pass good luck on to the room and the public. Jesse is a TA for special-needs students.

Funding was available through the First Nations Students Success Plan, a national program to promote learning, attendance and performance measurement.

The sensory room became ready for use in September, and Connie is glad to see it finished. The room may continue to evolve in the future.

“We’ve very proud of everybody,” she says.

My Little Corner For those tuned in to social media, there was some excitement on Wednesday evening in Pincher Creek.

Iris and Ian Reed noticed what they thought was a large dog crossing Hewetson Avenue around 8:30 p.m. Turning onto Charlotte Street, they saw the animal enter the Telus yard. To their surprise, it was a cougar in the headlights of their vehicle.

They captured a photo and a six-second video, which Iris posted to the Pincher Creek Buy and Sell page on Facebook to let people know the animal was in town. Shortly afterward, the sighting was reported to Fish and Wildlife.

We shared the information on our Facebook page with an update from Fish and Wildlife officer Matt Vormwald added about an hour later. His strongest message was for people to stay away from the animal if they saw it. He didn’t want anyone to actively chase it, and hoped to help the cat move off naturally once it was spotted again.

I thought an interesting photo opportunity might present itself, and made a trip to the office to get my camera. The cat had been spotted only two blocks from my house, and I noticed an RCMP vehicle parked at the Telus yard when I passed by.

On my return I pulled in and spoke with Const.

Flundra sent them on their way. I was glad for the OK to stay and watch the story unfold.

Fish and Wildlife officer Voramwald pulled up with a bear trap, followed shortly afterward by officer John Clarke with Koda, his Karelian bear dog.

Crowsnest Pass BearSmart members Christy Pool and Amber Hummelle rounded out the team who hoped to safely move the cougar from town.

When it came time to fire the tranquilizer dart, everyone had a place to be and certain things to watch for. My vehicle blocked the driveway, and the hope was to contain the cat in the fenced-in lot.

I think we were all surprised by how large the cougar was when it bounded out from underneath the shed. The size of its tail — about the same size as its body — was amazing.

Despite the tranquilizer, the cougar managed to get over the fence and escaped the yard. I stayed put for about 15 minutes before moving around to Main Street, where the other vehicles had gathered.

and few were aware the search was underway.

I’ve never been more aware of the plentitude of hiding places for any type of wildlife in our backyards. We looked for signs of movement and craned our necks to scan the treetops.

Shortly after 1 a.m. we called it a night.

What became of the cougar is its own story to tell.

Officer Clarke says cougars have been known to use their teeth to pull out tranquilizer darts, so this is a possibility. It’s also conceivable that there was a malfunction with the tranquilizer or that the cat could also have made it farther than anticipated due to a rush of adrenaline before the drug kicked in.

While there have been no further reports on the whereabouts of this particular animal, we can be sure there will be more. We share space with many species of wildlife, and spotting large animals like bears and cougars is not uncommon in town.

Sharing sightings on social media certainly helps to spread awareness.

the bank were replaced by a two-storey wooden building.

Now, that wooden structure will house a large exhibit of historic laundry items, Colleen says.

The bakery was one of three in Pincher Creek in 1905, and was owned by brothers Andrew and Norman Macleod.

The bakery and confectionery offered homemade breads and desserts until the 1920s, Farley says.

“It proved that Pincher Creek had a vibrant commercial district during the historic times,” he says. “Even smaller, specialized businesses could succeed here.”

The inside of the bakery will be remodelled to look like another Pincher Creek bakery of the era, with replicas of counters built, Colleen says.

KBPV plans to use the bakery to sell baked goods and candy during special events, she says.

Livery stables sheltered horses for a fee and downtown Pincher Creek had five of them, Farley says. Pincher Creek’s were unique in that horses could be rented and transportation service was offered from the stables to the railway station at Pincher Station.

The small livery at KBPV will be home to a sports, toys and bicycle exhibit, Colleen says. The historical society has many such items, and nowhere to put them at this time. The exhibit will also look at curling and polo histories in Pincher Creek.

All three of the new buildings need repairs to siding, and doors and windows need to be put in due to vandalism over the years. Most of the grant money will be used to clean up and renovate the inside of the bakery.

More volunteer time and effort will be needed for this project, Colleen says. Some materials have been donated, including doors, windows and hardwood flooring.

The buildings can already be seen on museum grounds, but the grand opening will be celebrated with the historical society anniversary on Sept. 2. Special exhibits will follow.

By Brad Quarin Follow the Footprints on the Landscape as Alberta Parks and the Chinook Arch Regional Library System team up to present this year’s Winter Speaker Series.

The series is underway now, with more presentations still ahead at Pincher Creek and District Municipal Library and other locations. These are accessible by videoconference from Crowsnest Community Library and other Alberta libraries.

The theme for this winter’s series, Footprints on the Landscape, is broad, with lots of potential.

“Wherever humans live, there is an impact,” says Heidi Eijgel, an Alberta Parks visitor services specialist. “Each individual footprint is pretty minimal, but if they all add up … that can significantly impact a landscape.”

For the first time, presentations in the series are being recorded — so, if you miss a good one, you can still see it. The presentations will be available on the YouTube channel for Chinook Arch Regional Library System.

The idea of recording each speaker came about because, in previous years, people who missed presentations would ask if they could still see them, Heidi says.

The Winter Speaker Series began in January with John and Kathleen Hancock shedding light on microscopic and aquatic creatures of our habitat. However, because this presentation didn’t record, John and

Kathleen have been invited to give it again at the end of the series, Heidi says.

The next two presentations will be based in the Pincher Creek library.

On Tuesday, Nora Manners, Jeff Bectell and Jennifer Jenkins from the Waterton Biosphere Association and the Blackfoot Challenge will speak.

Their talk, Sharing the Range, will focus on coexisting with large carnivores, from the perspective of Alberta and Montana ranchers.

On March 8, Andrea Morehouse will present the latest findings from the Southwest Alberta Grizzly Bear Monitoring Project.

The project tracks bears and studies hair from bear rub objects and fences to help determine the grizzly population of southwestern Alberta.

All presentations are held on Tuesdays at 7 p.m., with the last in the series on March 22. Scott Murphy will be speaking on Parks Canada’s prescribed fire program in Waterton Lakes National Park.

Then, on March 29, John and Kathleen will give their encore presentation.

Generally, the Winter Speaker Series is meant to spread the latest information about the landscape, and to bring communities together, Heidi says.

She says that all of the presentations centre on interesting topics, but she is particularly intrigued to hear what the Waterton Biosphere Association has to share and the latest results on the grizzlies from Andrea.

Empty Building Tour: a journey of possibility

By Erin Fairhurst There’s no question that Albertans are feeling the domino effect of a downtrending economy, but a local business owner has launched a project designed to inspire people to find opportunities in unexpected places.

Jessica Atkinson, co-owner of the Stone’s Throw Café in Blairmore, first began mulling over the idea of organizing an empty building tour in Crowsnest Pass back in the fall.

“This is a concept that’s been around for a while,” Jessica explains.

“A lot of empty building tours take place in the States, and when I heard about this being done in different communities, I just thought, ‘What a great idea!’ ” The premise behind the Crowsnest Pass Empty Building Tour is to invite interested parties to participate in a self-guided tour of commercial spaces for sale or rent in the Pass. Realtors and refreshments will be on hand, and participants can gather information in a relaxed, pressure-free setting.

“There are just so many opportunities here,” Jessica says. “We have some great spaces that are affordable and just waiting for the right person to come along.”

Crowsnest Pass has a unique combination of history, arts and culture, and endless recreational opportunities — all against a stunning, mountainous background. And best of all, it’s affordable.

“I would encourage anyone who is thinking about starting, or relocating, a business to join us for the empty building tour and to see what this community has to offer,” Jessica says.

The present economic climate might be closing doors for some, but it’s opening doors for others — especially those with an entrepreneurial spirit.

“There’s something to be said for being in charge of your own destiny,” says Jessica, who moved to Crowsnest Pass from Jasper in 2003 with her husband, Steve.

In fact, Jessica and Steve once toured multiple buildings in Crowsnest Pass as they searched for the right fit to start their own business.

Over a decade later, their business, the Stone’s Throw Café, is now a landmark fixture on main street Blairmore.

“We really didn’t know what to expect when we first came to the Crowsnest Pass,” Jessica recalls. “Here was this little slot of a community tucked between K-Country and Waterton, and now the rest is history.”

The Crowsnest Pass Empty Building Tour takes place on April 16 from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m. The tour is free, and participants can visit all properties, or just the ones that interest them. Jessica already has several properties in mind for the tour, and says the focus will be on spaces that are highly visible, historical or just plain “intriguing.”

Artists are welcome to contact her to inquire about displaying their artwork in the venues, realtors are encouraged to get involved, and local historians and storytellers are invited to come out for the day to share their knowledge of the different sites and the community.

By Ritch Braun Three Passtrak athletes competed in a track meet at the University of Alberta in Edmonton on Feb. 6 and 7.

Clara Websdale entered three events in the peewee (10- and 11-year-old) girls category. Her first event was the long jump, which she contested for the first time ever and cleared 2.59 metres for 11th place. Her next event was the 60 metres and she placed 13th in 11.92 seconds. Clara’s final event was the 600 metres, where she came oh-so close to a personal best when she crossed the finish line 13th in 2 minutes 36.60 seconds.

Sawyer Sawatzky represented his club in three of the peewee boys events.

He long jumped for the first time as well, and placed 14th with a leap of 2.93 metres. Next, he ripped the 60 metres in a lifetime best of 11.21 seconds for 17th. He finished off the meet with the 600 metres, where he clocked 2:49.67 for 16th.

Ethan Richards has been Passtrak’s most active competitor so far this year and has improved in every track meet he’s entered. He ran two races in the youth (16- and 17-year-old) age group. He grabbed fifth place in the 60 metres in 7.61 seconds and then broke the existing Passtrak club record in the 300 metres, bringing it down to 39.89 seconds. That was a personal best for him as well, and placed him fifth in the event.

Passtrak athletes will take the next month to put their noses to the grindstone in preparation for the provincial indoor track and field championships. This meet takes place in Edmonton on March 5 and 6.

Bela (Bill) Karasz It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Bela Karasz of Blairmore, who succumbed to illness at the South Health Campus in Calgary on Feb. 8, 2016, and was blessed with almost 71 years of life.

Bela was born in Iszka Szengyorgy, Hungary, on Feb. 17, 1945, to proud parents Laszlo and Irene Karasz. Their family emigrated from Hungary in December of 1956 to escape the political unrest and mortal danger. They arrived in Canada in 1957, making a homestead in Iron Spring, Alta., and eventually moving to Crowsnest Pass in 1960.

Bill was no stranger to hard work and he gained a job in the mines for the next 18 years. He also served in the military for a year and later gained employment as a school bus driver and custodian.

His hard work ethic and charismatic character caught the attention of a lovely lady, Judit Erdos, and the happy couple were joined in holy matrimony on June 24, 1970, and further blessed with four children and later a grandchild to spread joy and laughter in their loving home.

Grace Alvina Helmer 1932 – 2016

Grace passed away unexpectedly at the Pincher Creek hospital on Feb. 2, 2016, at the age of 83.

She was born in Springridge, Alta., on Oct. 5, 1932, and was the second child of Leon and Theresa LeBel. Grace graduated in 1950 to become a nursing aid. On Aug. 26, 1953, in Pincher Creek, she married Herbert Helmer. Grace and Herb had three children, Dan, Nick and Byron. She was the grandmother to five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Grace was predeceased by Leon and Theresa LeBel and by brothers Edward LeBel and Lionel LeBel. She is survived by her husband, Herbert Helmer; sons Daniel (Diana) Helmer, Nicholas Helmer, Byron (Sosan) Helmer; grandchildren Matthew Helmer, Christopher (Megan) Helmer, Jeffrey Helmer, Tamara (Mike) Leech, Sarah Helmer; great-grandchild Mason Leech; sisters Nettie Cebryk, Leona Young and Marjorie Pelletier.

A visitation was held at Foster’s Garden Chapel in Calgary on Feb. 13, 2016, and a celebration of life was held at the same location on Feb. 14.

Left to mourn his passing and celebrate his life are his wife, Judit Karasz (née Erdos); his children, Attila (Terry) Szilagyi, Billy (Hope) Karasz and Sylvia (Cameron) Reiter; his grandchildren, Zachary, Crystal, Angel, Billy Jr., Kristian, Bret, Jessilyn, Adrianna, Chandler; his great-grandchildren, Brody Ryan Quinton, Chase Michel Quinton, Jaden James Quinton, Carson Andrew Quinton, Lindsay Maria Quinton; his brothers, Leslie (Linda) Karasz, Joe (Otillia) Karasz, John Karasz, Steve (Margaret) Karasz, Tibor (Mary) Karasz, Atillo (Janet) Karasz; his sisters, Irene Bari, Elizabeth (Ray) Bouillet, Maria Mackenzie; as well as his extended family and the many friends he made throughout his lifetime.

Enhancements to 511 Alberta Two new platforms have been launched by 511 Alberta to help Albertans navigate our roads and highways year-round.

Alberta will be the first jurisdiction in Canada to launch a mobile app that allows citizen reporting of road conditions. The Citizen Reporter app will empower Albertans to report road conditions once they have taken an online training course. The app will work on both iPhone and Android devices.

511 Alberta has also launched an updated website that allows Albertans to track more than 600 snowplows operated by Alberta Transportation contractors who maintain our highway network throughout the winter.

For safety reasons, both of these enhancements should be used prior to leaving or after arriving at your destination, not while on the road.

“We all play a part in keeping Alberta’s winter roads safe,” says Trans-

portation Minister Brian Mason. “By allowing citizens to report on our province’s ever-changing road conditions, we can help drivers make safe and better-informed travel decisions that keep Albertans moving all year long.”

Supt. Ian Lawson of K Division traffic services says the RCMP are “excited about this advancement in the 511 system” and are looking into ways to “make use of the new app to better inform the public, as an extension of our traffic safety messaging to all Albertans.”

511 Alberta has 138 traffic cameras on the highway network, including the mountain parks. Last year, 511 Alberta added a system to provide motorists with real-time warnings about high winds in the Crowsnest area on Highway 22.

CCHS teacher introduces fitness club

When teacher Matt Hennig arrived at Crowsnest Consolidated High School three years ago, he immediately noticed that the Coleman school lacked a fitness club.

He felt one would be of great use to the students, preparing them for public gyms after leaving high school.

“It can be intimidating to go to a gym if you’re not sure what to do,” he says. “So it’s nice for them to learn here, get a little bit of instruction and a little bit of guidance.”

Previously, he had led a student fitness club in Lundbreck, and felt that a similar club could be started at CCHS. So, for a year and a half, he worked on finding the funding to acquire equipment.

The CCHS Academics and Athletics Society, set up to support extracurricular activities, donated $2,500 for some equipment.

Then, members of the community came forward to donate more equipment. Herman denDijker gave the club a bike and rower, Connie Arbuckle offered a bike, and Peter and Adele McKernan donated a multigym.

Through word of mouth, the project also caught the attention of the Crowsnest Pass Weightlifting Club. The club donated a stairclimber, a bike, a rowing machine, a hamstring machine and a treadmill to the school.

Debby Greenwood, a board member for the

weightlifting club, says the organization was in the midst of upgrades and had older equipment to spare.

The club preferred to help the school rather than sell the equipment, finding this to be a constructive way to recycle and give back to the community.

Thanks to the generosity of these individuals and clubs, the new CCHS fitness club was launched this month.

Membership in the club is free to students, who can just show up at meetings held after school on Mondays and Thursdays. Matt takes all new members through an orientation.

“They can come as much or as little as they want,” he says.

So far, the club has attracted strong student interest. In its first week, eight to 15 students, male and female and representing grades 7 to 12, have attended.

Some members are experienced with gyms, while others are beginners and are learning well, Matt says.

As supervisor, he teaches students how to safely use the equipment and helps with setting goals. Students can then decide what is best for them.

While I was speaking with him, Matt kept his eye on the students to ensure they were using the equipment safely and correctly.

Matt hopes that after Grade 12, these students will know how to stay fit and healthy and will seek out public gyms to continue their fitness training.

Upgrades create safer water for Pincher Creek

The Town of Pincher Creek’s water treatment plant has just undergone an extensive upgrade. It includes piping, valves and reactors as well as staff training for the new ultraviolet system.

The new UV system allows water to go through a chamber where it passes by a UV lightbulb, and that light inactivates any bacteria in the water.

The new system was tested and programming upgrades completed in December. The town’s operations team has now completed a first-class training course for the upgraded system.

The project was funded in part through the Government of Canada’s Small Communities Fund and totalled $450,000.

Town of Pincher Creek CAMPGROUND HOST OPPORTUNITY Veteran’s Memorial Park The Town of Pincher Creek is seeking a campground host for the 2016 season at the Veteran’s Memorial Park & Campground – 940 Scobie Avenue, Pincher Creek.

Literacy Day fun at Canyon School

By Brad Quarin Students of Canyon School in Pincher Creek got a lot of reading done after Family Literacy Day, and the top readers were rewarded with more books.

Starting Jan. 27, the reading challenge gave children a week to read at home and track the time they spent in the world of books.

The two students in each grade who spent the most time reading got to choose from a selection of books offered by Scholastic.

Getting to know Citizens on Patrol

By George Dowson Pincher Creek District Citizens on Patrol, a volunteer group, was originally started in 1997, but somehow lost its drive for a while. However, in 2010, a community-minded RCMP officer got it back on its feet and new members joined from the municipal district, Cowley and Pincher Creek, along with some of the original members.

Many people don’t even know our group exists.

We are one of the 36 Citizens on Patrol groups now in operation throughout Alberta, from Fort McMurray to Redcliff. Each group’s goal is to help keep communities safe and to be the second set of eyes and ears for the local RCMP. We don’t have flashing lights, weapons, or handcuffs; however, what we do have are cameras, notepads, cellphones, flashlights and dashcams. We do not engage with anyone we observe, but we take pictures if possible, make notes and, if deemed necessary, a phone call is made to the RCMP dispatch.

There are two and sometimes three members out together on a patrol, which usually lasts about three hours. In that time, we check businesses in Lundbreck, Cowley, Pincher Creek, and Pincher Station for such things as doors left unlocked.

We will then leave a business card with the time and date the business was checked, as well as any suggestions for improving the safety of the premises. If a door is found unlocked, we will either notify the owner/manager (if known), or the RCMP. We travel up and down streets and alleys, always surveilling if anything is amiss. In the summer, we also check campgrounds in the area. One member of our group is our dispatcher, whom we inform when we go out where we’re going and how long we plan on being out, and we call once we return.

There are no set times for patrollers to go out; therefore, we could be out and about at 6 p.m. or 3 a.m. As well, we have members who live out in the rural areas, who keep a close eye out for anything suspicious.

Starting soon, we will be publishing the number of patrols we’ve done, the number of kilometres we’ve driven and the number of businesses we’ve checked each month. Also we will be reporting the results of these patrols.

An Immigrant’s Story: The Rise and Fall of Emilio Picariello Submitted by Crowsnest Museum

The Crowsnest Museum is proud to present the official launch of the travelling exhibit An Immigrant’s Story: The Rise and Fall of Emilio Picariello, created by the Fernie Museum, on Tuesday, Feb. 23, at 7 p.m. at the Crowsnest Museum, located at 7701 18th Ave. in historic downtown Coleman.

This exhibit will examine “Emperor Pick,” his roots, who the man was, and the events leading up to the shooting of Const. Steve Lawson in front of the Alberta Provincial Police barracks building in Coleman.

Nearly 92 years after their deaths by hanging for the murder of Const. Lawson, Emilio Picariello and Florence Lassandro continue to capture the imagination of historians and the greater public. These three characters’ stories have left an indelible mark on Crowsnest Pass.

In addition to this great exhibit, the Crowsnest Museum is pleased to have the exhibit’s curator, Adrianna A. Davies, in attendance on Tuesday. She will be make a presentation explor-

ing the themes of the exhibit as well as launching her new book, which approaches Picariello’s story as a cold case.

While there is little doubt he was a bootlegger, she calls into question the circumstances that led to Const. Lawson’s death and whether Picariello was ultimately responsible.

Did his Italian heritage play a role? Was his trial defence adequate? Was there another shooter? Were Picariello and Lassandro wrongfully convicted?

Adriana is a well-known researcher, writer, editor and poet. She is the author of From Realism to Abstraction: The Art of J. B. Taylor (2014, University of Calgary Press) and co-editor of The Frontier of Patriotism: Alberta and the First World War (to be published by the University of Calgary Press in 2016).

She was invested into the Order of Canada in 2010 for her contributions to heritage. In 2015 she was awarded a knighthood (Cavaliere d’Italia) by the Italian government.

At the event, the Crowsnest Historical Soci-

ety and Crowsnest Museum will unveil plans to restore the Alberta Provincial Police barracks building, located in historic downtown Coleman, and to develop a major exhibit inside the building.

The restored building will provide space for a world-class interpretive facility to tell the story of the APP; the Prohibition era; the shooting of Const. Lawson; the trial, sentencing and hanging of Emilio Picariello and Florence Losandro; and local Crowsnest Pass police history.

Education programming will be part of the exhibit planning for the project. The site will be operated by the Crowsnest Museum.

It is planned to have the project completed and officially opened on July 1, 2017, to coincide with Canada’s 150th birthday. 2017 is also the 100th anniversary of the formation of the APP. At the event, the Crowsnest Historical Society will announce the successful contractor to develop the world-class exhibit and will launch a major fundraising campaign to secure funds to complete the restoration and develop the exhibit.

By Brad Quarin The COW Bus won the hearts of local children when it visited Pincher Creek and Blairmore last week.

The Alberta Prairie Classroom on Wheels belongs to the Centre for Family Literacy in Edmonton and visits communities around the province to promote family literacy. The COW Bus carries books and activities for the benefit of families with children aged six and under.

While a less mobile COW Bus in Edmonton serves as more of a lending library, the Alberta Prairie Classroom on Wheels delivers donations of books,

says facilitator Sharon Smith.

In Pincher Creek, the books were divided between the municipal library, the Parent Link Centre and Children’s World Daycare.

In Crowsnest Pass, the books went to the Early Childhood Development Coalition, to be distributed as needed to other community organizations.

Sharon also took the opportunity to announce the new COW Bus app, Flit, which is a parent resource fostering literacy and building strong reading skills.
