Family Secrets soon to be revealed

By Erin Fairhurst Reading Family Secrets is a lot like sitting down for a big family dinner — you’re surrounded by all sorts of characters and each one holds a special place in your heart. Some of them are quirky, some melancholy, and others are just plain fascinating.

None of them are forgettable.

Composed of 27 mostly true stories from writers in southern Alberta, Family Secrets began as a writing workshop led by local author Tyler Trafford. It quickly turned into something much bigger: a book publication.

Speckled with snapshots and snippets of history, the book also contains a short biography of each author. This is a welcome touch, as some of the bios of these storytellers and how they came to live in southern Alberta are pretty fascinating on their own.

It was also neat to experience the odd jolt of familiarity as I occasionally recognized the name or face of one of the contributing authors: Sally Connelly, Kathleen Hancock, Judy Lane, George Mowat, Shirley Mowat, B.J. Scott, Hilah Simmons, Betty Smith, Bill Smith, Donna May Stirling, Joyce Taylor, Carole Teran, Agnes Thibert, Joan Turcott and Valerie Wynder.

It is amazing to think about the stories and experiences that people in our own communities have had — and to know there are still so many stories out there, just waiting to be told.

As I delved deeper into the pages of Family Secrets, I began making a mental list of all of the people in my life who I imagined would enjoy it.

My dad, a history buff, would certainly get a kick out of it. My husband, who loves to explore the outdoors, would definitely enjoy reading about our landscape from so many unique perspectives.

A few of my girlfriends who are fascinated by homesteading would find the stories about rural life quite interesting. Family friends who live on a ranch south of Pincher Creek would no doubt love to have a copy. My sister who enjoys genealogy would, of course, be riveted.

Needless to say, my list grew quite long. In fact, I feel I can safely say there’s something in Family Secrets for everyone to enjoy. The nice thing about a book like this is that you don’t have to read the stories in order, you don’t have to read it all at once, and you don’t even have to read the whole thing (but

you should).

Family Secrets is an important book — not just because it captures unique details about the changing landscape of southern Alberta and our history, but because, without it, these stories likely wouldn’t have been recorded.

The art of storytelling and the practice of recording memories and fragments from our past is so vital, and yet seldom done anymore. Stories and life experiences are what connect us as families, and as communities.

By taking pen to paper, these authors have courageously shared authentic moments from their lives, and for that I am grateful. Family Secrets will remind readers that it is often the little details in life that make up the fabric of our existence, and we should do our best to preserve them.

In her story, “New Beginnings That Are Now Old,” Shirley Mowat concludes by saying, “Looking back, my life seemed to have happened so fast. One day I was playing with my friends by the lake and the next day I had great grandchildren.”

Shirley goes on to say that she’ll be leaving behind five sheets of handwritten stories in a wellmarked envelope for her great grandchildren to one day enjoy.

“I’m hoping,” Shirley writes, “that the little bit I’ve told here will stick in their minds long enough so that when they start to get curious about where they came from, they will know there are answers waiting for them.”

Indeed, the ultimate gift of Family Secrets is that it will inspire us to ask questions, to look for answers, and, hopefully, to tell our own stories.

A book launch gala and wine-and-cheese reception for Family Secrets will be held on March 7 from 7 to 9 p.m at Kootenai Brown Pioneer Village in Pincher Creek.

Everyone is welcome to attend and to celebrate the accomplishment of these local authors, along with Tyler Trafford, to whom the book is dedicated, and Judy Trafford, whose artwork makes up the front cover.

Mathias aspires to making the national triathlon team and it was this that led him to Passtrak. Running is part of triathlon and he needed a coach for that aspect.

Two friends, Eric and Liam Grier, belonged to Passtrak, and Mathias was well aware of their sprinting skills. Ritch had also seen Mathias run in a school track and field event, and expressed an interest in drafting him.

Three other members of the Gelber family, including Ronan, followed Mathias and joined Passtrak last September.

“It’s really fun, and also, I can feel that I’m getting better at running,” Ronan says.

Passtrak has taught Mathias different techniques, such as effective warmups and how to increase speed with less energy.

Ronan’s jumping and hurdling skills have also improved in Passtrak.

Ritch’s approach to teaching these skills is to emphasize an individual’s potential and celebrate personal improvements.

“We cannot control how often the other athletes train, how hard the other athletes train or how long they train, so why would we ever compare ourselves to them?” he says. “So we look for personal improvement.”

This is why Passtrak publishes its results, focusing on individual improvements over ribbons and medals. Athletes also receive motivational posters, Ronan says.

Of course, some Passtrak athletes do win ribbons and medals. Mathias and Ronan won their Athletics Alberta awards through the provincial championships in November.

Ronan ran a two-kilometre race and finished first among athletes 10 and 11 years old, with a time of nine minutes.

Mathias ran three kilometres against athletes 12 and 13 years old, and finished first with a time of seven minutes 49 seconds.

The Gelbers were still new to the club at that time, so they were elated with their achievements.

Ritch also finds his award meaningful, since it came from his peers.

“They’re the ones that know best what it is that you do on a regular basis,” he says.

His achievements and those of his athletes suggest that these awards were certainly well deserved.

Keep the hashtags coming for Kraft Hockeyville

By Brad Quarin On Feb. 3, residents of Pincher Creek literally wore their town pride and love of hockey on their sleeves.

That was the day town council declared Jersey Day. They invited everyone to wear a hockey jersey that day and post pictures on social media to demonstrate the community’s love of the sport.

The goal was to boost Pincher Creek’s bid to be named Kraft Hockeyville — and there’s still more to come.

“It’s not over yet,” says Councillor Wayne Elliott. “They haven’t heard the end of us.”

The annual competition, sponsored by Kraft, the National Hockey League and the NHL Players’ Association, awards prize money to communities with a passion for the game.

The title, Kraft Hockeyville, could benefit the Memorial Community Centre Arena. In particular, Wayne wants to move the Zamboni room to make the arena safer.

On Jersey Day, many locals posted their jersey and hockey pictures to Facebook, Instagram and Twitter with the hashtag #KHV_MemCommunityCtr. However, it’s not too late to continue using the hashtag to support the effort. Wayne says it is still important to grab the judges’ attention, and every tweet and Facebook share helps.

With new posts using the hashtag, Wayne encourages those producing posters to “think outside the box.” Creative pictures and videos would be great.

One unique promotion of the Kraft Hockeyville bid is the placement of donation boxes for the Junction food bank at the arena lobby and town office. People are encouraged to fill them with Kraft products, he says.

He also urges anyone with new ideas for promoting the campaign to share them on social media.

The campaign will last until 10 finalists are announced on March 5. The first round of voting takes place on March 13 and 14 at www.khv2016.ca.

My Little Corner The first call came a few hours after the Feb. 3 issue of Shootin’ the Breeze hit the street.

Had I forgotten to include the events calendar?

In following weeks, I have spoken and emailed with many others wondering what has become of the calendar pages.

Removing the pages was a difficult decision that, in the end, boiled down to economics.

First Teck, then Shell, sponsored the youth and adult calendars through their advertising.

Given Alberta’s current economic climate, it wasn’t a huge surprise when those contracts were not renewed in January.

Groups such as Parent Link, Brighter Futures, Huddlestun Senior Centre, Legions in Crowsnest Pass and Pincher Creek, Town of Pincher Creek, Municipality of Crowsnest Pass, Bellecrest Seniors, Guides, Pincher Creek Caregiver Support Group, Crowsnest Indoor Playground, Gym Walk and Exercise for LIFE, local curling clubs, Napi Friendship Centre, Hillcrest Miners Club, Air Cadets, Adult Learning, AA Pincher Creek, local libraries, Scouts, TOPS, Allied Arts in Pincher Creek and Crowsnest Pass and area schools were among many who benefited from cost-free promotion of their community events thanks to Teck and Shell.

Athletes return from Games

By Brad Quarin Two young Pincher Creek athletes were put to the test at the Alberta Winter Games in mid February, enjoying the experience despite a challenging lack of snow.

T.J. Metcalfe, 15, competed in freestyle skiing while Rylan Bruns, 12, played in boys hockey in Medicine Hat. “Going to the Winter Games is always fun,” T.J. says. He previously competed in the Games in 2014, in the same sport.

T.J. learned to snowboard at Castle Mountain Resort. After a friend suggested he try out skiing, he found that, not only did he like it but, it gave him more control than snowboarding.

Subsequently, he joined the Castle Mountain Freestyle Club, a club teaching skills to youth, and has now been skiing for nearly eight years. Some members of this club are as young as four.

For older members like T.J., there are more extensive drills and more challenging courses.

This January in Jasper, he qualified for the Games by placing second in mogul skiing, which is a freestyle event on a mogul course. Speed and the ability to turn and jump are essential.

He placed 13th in slopestyle skiing, which involves obstacles and encourages original tricks such as flips and spins.

After Jasper, T.J. spent considerable time training at Castle Mountain, especially with the freestyle club.

Commenting on his stay in Medicine Hat, he reported that the school where he stayed was very suitable and the schedule

was well organized.

The opening ceremony at the Games proved to be the highlight of the trip for him, especially the band and announcers.

However, very little snow kept athletes from achieving as much as they could have during the competitions, T.J. says.

Despite these conditions, he did meet his own expectations for mogul skiing, placing fourth in the under-16 category. In slopestyle skiing, he finished at around 33rd place.

T.J. figures he’ll want to try for the next Alberta Winter Games. This will be in 2018 as the Games are held every two years.

Rylan was a newcomer to the Games this year in contrast to T.J. He found the experience was even better than he had anticipated.

Rylan enjoyed meeting new people in Medicine Hat, and was challenged to play hockey at a higher level than he was used to.

The Games took place in a Western Hockey League arena, which was also higher-end than arenas he had played in before.

The boys hockey team for Zone 1— the Sunny South — placed fifth out of eight teams.

Personally, Rylan scored two goals and three assists, meeting his expectations. He felt he did fairly well.

His mom, Jacqui, is proud. “Rylan and his team had to push themselves to compete at the level they were faced with,” she says.

Rylan can’t compete again in boys hockey because of his age. However, he would like to be part of the Alberta Winter Games again.

Tennis is a possibility for the future.

Home Routes concerts continue to delight

By Agnes Thibert The fourth in a series of Home Routes concerts was held at the Windsor Heritage Drop-in Centre in Lundbreck on Feb. 6.

A full house enjoyed the old-time music duo Spencer & Rains, who came to us all the way from Kansas. Their fiddle-and-guitar tunes set toes tapping and hands clapping.

A meeting of classic and modern came at the end of the concert, when well-known local musicians Phil Lethbridge and Jackie Therriault stopped to chat with the couple. Both Tricia Spencer and Howard Rains expressed a wish to have been able to hear the two perform, as they had so many times over the years. Maybe next time.

The fifth concert in the series, featuring storyteller and songwriter Ian Tamblyn, will be held at the Windsor Centre on March 6. Call 627-7963 or 628-2011 for more information.

Crestview Lodge highlights Submitted by Charmaine Tienkamp Thank goodness January came, as it was time to slow down and get back into a regular routine. Don’t get us wrong — we did have loads of fun — but now it’s time to get ready for the next year of adventures at Crestview Lodge.

We started some classes with Chris-Ann, who comes from the Pincher Creek library to help us with updating our knowledge of computers. Marie S., who is 100 years old, is now on Facebook with family. Just goes to show that you are never too old to learn.

Other residents are learning basics like playing solitaire on the computer. Chris-Ann is wonderfully patient and a joy to have come and help those wanting to learn something new.

We would also say a big thank you to our Pincher Creek Legion. They again put on a great seniors party! We enjoyed ourselves so much. The band Play’n Country is one of our favourites to come play at Crestview, so of course we absolutely enjoyed the music.

The luncheon was so wonderfully made and very delicious. Thanks to the ladies auxiliary for putting so much work into the party — it was terrific! To top off such a great afternoon, a bunch of the Crestview gang won door prizes. Thanks to the Legion for all you do in our community.

On our pub night we had Orange Blossom Express come and play. If you have never heard them, you should. They come from Claresholm and they do make our evening fun. They are a seniors band that play accordion and guitar. They play the music we enjoy most, like old country music, waltzes and polkas.

Come spring, there are a few really great bus trips lined up for us to adventure out of Crestview Lodge and keep us in touch with our community and areas.

Plans in the works for a bigger Pass pool

By Brad Quarin The aged Pass Community Pool in Blairmore will not be shut down, but will instead give way to a larger pool and some added features.

Municipal council gave unanimous approval at the end of January to the extensive renovations.

“It’s definitely an enhancement over what we have currently,” says Lyle Hannan, director of community services.

The slide alone will be exciting. The current one, 20 feet long, will be replaced with a 130-foot slide featuring twists and turns, which will allow it to fit into the space.

“It is on a totally different level from the existing slide,” he says. “This would be your more prototypical water park slide that would be attractive to teenagers as well as … little kids.”

There will also be a hot tub.

An enhanced swimming pool will be attractive not only to residents, but to visitors as well.

It would be a facility that “families that are camping in the area and doing things in the area would want to go to,” he says.

The big question on the mind of community members has been whether the outdoor pool will be replaced by an indoor one. However, that decision has already been made — the next pool will be outside.

Lyle says the determining factor was the bud-

get, which allows for $1.5 million to rebuild the pool. It might take as much as $15 million to build and operate an indoor pool, which would mean a corresponding 20 per cent tax increase, he says.

Lyle has experience running pools in other communities, so he knows that the extra revenue from a pool open year-round and more patrons won’t produce a profit.

The decision to redesign the pool was made due to the realization that the present Pass Community Pool, at 44 years old, had reached the end of its time.

The mechanical room and the pipes running under the pool needed to be replaced, and the concrete was cracking, Lyle says. Maintenance would cost nearly as much as replacing the pool with a new one. And a new one could give the community another 25 to 40 years of enjoyment.

The new designs were proposed by Western Recreation and Development, which will build the pool.

The company’s proposal was endorsed by a committee comprising Lyle and the director of engineering as well as two members of the Crowsnest Pass Community Pool Society. The society is a volunteer group concerned with the pool.

Construction will begin in August and end in June 2017.

The Crowsnest Pass Music Festival would like to remind everyone of the return of the festival, from March 7 to 11.

Since 1957, the festival has offered students in our area and neighbouring communities a chance to perform for qualified teachers and receive valuable feedback to help direct their studies. It provides the community the opportunity to hear fine performances of a wide range of music and to support young people on their quest for excellence.

We also would like to invite everyone to join us at Isabelle Sellon School on March 18 at 7 p.m. for the Crowsnest Pass Music Festival grand concert, with Courtney from Mountain Radio as master of ceremonies. Featuring some of the exceptional musical talent from festival week, this year’s grand concert promises to be an evening to remember.

Admission to festival regular sessions is by donation.

Tickets for the grand concert are $5 and are available at the door or at festival venues throughout festival week.

Town info meeting Pincher Creek town council is hosting an information meeting this Wednesday in the town hall gym. The event starts at 6 p.m. with an open house, where residents can speak one-on-one to the mayor and council.

At 7, presentations by the mayor and councillors will showcase completed projects and current priorities.

Council members, who are halfway through their electoral term, encourage residents to share in their achievements and successes as well as present priorities for the second half of their term. A question-and-answer period will follow the presentations. This is a great opportunity for residents to have their voices heard by council.

Hunters and anglers celebrate trophy achievements

By Brad Quarin Some particularly impressive animal trophies were submitted to this year’s trophy day, says Brian Vander Linden, president of the Hillcrest Fish and Game Protective Association.

There were great sizes of trophy elk and mule deer, and the only ram submitted was magnificently big, he says.

The ram was brought in by Dillon Williams, who hunted with his father and recalls this as “a great father-son moment.”

With 36 trophy animal entries and over 50 trophy fish entries, awards were given for the cream of the crop.

Those are great figures, compared to the 22 entries in this year’s trophy day in Lethbridge, Brian says. “There’s a lot more active hunters” in the Hillcrest-based club.

In fact, membership in the club reached 211 last year, more than it has been in years, he says. He attributes the increased membership to greater awareness of the club and to the fact that you need to belong to a fish and game association to be heard in provincial legislation concerning animals.

The club rallied for Sunday hunting and currently wants to fix the road to the fish and game pond by the Coleman gun range, he says.

This will allow seniors and children to enjoy the pond with easier access.

Another reason why participation is up may be that every child who submits a trophy fish gets a prize. The age range in hunters and anglers submitting trophies was broad, with the youngest around 12 and the oldest hunters in their 70s.

Trophy day enjoyed strong turnout due, in part, to the guest speakers, including local biologist Greg Hale and Fish and Wildlife officer John Clarke.

John reported that this year, Fish and Wildlife dealt with 34 Wildlife Act violations as well as 27 black bear and 49 grizzly bear occurrences.

John reported that BearSmart sold 36 bear-proof bins in 2015.

There was applause for young BearSmart volunteer Deighton Wilkinson, who donated his $286 in birthday money to the program.

There was also an announcement that Mantracker star Terry Grant is returning to Crowsnest Pass this year. Terry is well known in the area for his tracking skills and courses as well as his previous role in the TV series.

Mary Therese Svab, 84, of Pincher Creek, passed away peacefully on Feb. 13, 2016, at the Pincher Creek Health Centre, after a brief illness.

Mary was born April 20, 1931, in Montreal to George (Juri) and Anna Gaydos. She moved from Montreal with her mother and brother to Toronto after the sudden passing of her father.

There she lived with her family until meeting Mike Svab through the Toronto Slovak community. They were married in Toronto in 1952 and moved to Pincher Creek to start a family.

She was predeceased by her parents and her brother, Joe, and is survived by her son, Joe (Wendy), grandchildren Angela and Michael, as well as sisters-inlaw Jeannette Gaydos and Pauline Warren and nieces and nephews.

Mary enjoyed many activities, including reading, music, singing in the choir at St. Michael’s Church and gardening. In her later years she found joy in watching her grandchildren, Angela and Michael, play a variety of sports.

Mary had an inquisitive mind, often reading and posing questions to learn more, even attending Lethbridge College as an adult. Mary also tutored students at Matthew Halton Community School for many years.

A prayer service was held Feb. 17, 2016, at St. Michael’s Church in Pincher Creek. A funeral mass was held Feb. 18, also at St. Michael’s Church, with Rev. Silvano Vargas presiding. Interment followed at Fairview Cemetery.
