Firefighters take on stairclimb challenge

By Brad Quarin Firefighters face many dangers in their work, including a risk of developing one of at least 11 kinds of cancer.

Shane Hopkins, a volunteer firefighter with Crowsnest Pass Fire/Rescue, says those hazards are at the back of his mind when he’s dealing with a call. “But we protect ourselves as much as we can.”

Bunker gear, including protective clothing, has to be in good shape, but there are still risks even if a firefighter is completely outfitted in duty gear.

Having joined the department to serve his community, Shane’s not too afraid of the possibility of cancer. He knows it is an occupational hazard but he also knows there are resources available to firefighters and others who have been diagnosed with cancer.

One such resource is Wellspring Calgary, a non-profit organization that provides information and support to cancer patients, their families and caregivers and deals with the fear and isolation patients may face.

To help raise money for Wellspring Calgary, Shane is leading a team of four members of Crowsnest Pass Fire/ Rescue in the Firefighter Stairclimb Challenge.

Shane, Darren and Cory Davis took the same challenge last year.

Hosted by the Calgary Fire Department and Calgary Firefighters Benevolent Fund in partnership with Encana, the Firefighter Stairclimb Challenge encourages firefighters to climb the BOW Building in Calgary, on May 1.

That’s 1,204 steps, adding up to 775 vertical feet, all

while the firefighters are wearing full gear.

“It’s going for a good cause, and I respect our members for going and I encourage them to go,” says Steve Debienne, Crowsnest Pass fire chief.

“I’m looking forward to having them get to the top in better time than they did last year.”

Steve says he is too busy this year to participate himself, but there is always next year.

Shane first read about the Firefighter Stairclimb Challenge online last year. “It’s an interesting thing to do,” he says.

Firefighters sometimes have to climb a lot of stairs, but he says he’s never had to climb as many as required to reach the top of Western Canada’s tallest building. There are some staircases in Crowsnest Pass, but few tall buildings.

It becomes more challenging when you’re wearing full gear, which Steve says weighs 60 pounds.

Last year was an “awesome” experience, Shane says. It took him 30 minutes to climb the BOW Building, and he says Darren took even less time.

Shane says that after the climb, he wasn’t exhausted. He can prepare for this year by climbing the stairs in Flumerfelt Park.

It wasn’t hard to find challengers within Crowsnest Pass Fire/Rescue. Shane filled the four positions on a first come, first served basis.

The money raised is used primarily in Calgary, but Wellspring Calgary also serves patients throughout Alberta, British Columbia and Saskatchewan, says Suzan Valenta, director of philanthropy. All of the services of the group are free.

Suzan is glad to see the Crowsnest Pass team participating. “We’re delighted to welcome them to Calgary,” she says.

So far, the four individuals have raised over $330, mostly from local people and some from outside of the department. The goal for the group is to raise $2,000, up from $1,500 last year.

Locals were invited to wear hockey jerseys to support Pincher Creek’s bid for Kraft Hockeyville, while the Winter Walk is an Alberta-wide event to encourage people to get outside and get moving during the winter.

Marie was among the group strolling along the creek in a hockey jersey that day.

One of the ways she has contributed to events has been to draw on her photography hobby. “I really enjoy being behind a camera,” she says.

In the past, she entered photo contests held

by Crowsnest Pass Allied Arts and Shootin’ the Breeze. In September, she placed first in the Crowsnest Pass wildlife category with her poetic “Elk by Moonlight.”

While she was too busy to enter this year’s Winter in Alberta contest, taking pictures is a great way to showcase events and prove Pincher Creek is “a vibrant place.”

It’s hard to say what Marie’s proudest achievement has been to date, but she’s excited about a signage project that will highlight resources such as the curling arena and swimming pool.

And we can be sure this go-getter will be chasing many other new projects in which the town at large can take pride.

My Little Corner I don’t need to reach too far back in my memory to recall a time when doors were left unlocked when no one was home and security was taken for granted, especially if you lived in a small town.

Now, the deadbolt on my house door is turned even when I’m home, and my vehicle is locked even if I’m just jumping out for a few minutes. It’s simply become habit.

Maybe I’m just a Nervous Nellie — I know many who still leave their doors open.

Two incidents last week make me wonder how far security measures need to go.

I visited a nightclub in Lethbridge and was asked to show my identification. The doorman didn’t think I looked under 20; he said everyone must hand over ID. He looked it over, swiped it in a machine and told me to look at a small camera pointed in my direction.

This is the first Lethbridge venue to use a system that connects subscribing bars across the province. The computer verified my identification, and my photo will remain in their system.

Say I had instigated a brawl in the bar that night — my name would be flagged to all venues on the system. If I tried to return to this particular establishment, I would not be allowed in. Ever.

entry, knowing that I posed a risk.

I don’t go out much and, while I understand the security it provides to staff and patrons, it seemed a little over the top.

On Friday a security issue hit closer to home.

The hospital in my Saskatchewan hometown was put on lockdown after receiving multiple bomb threats.

My younger sister was at work there. She sent a few texts saying she was fine, but from 1,000 kilometres away I worried all day.

Marcy and her co-workers were escorted from the building when their afternoon shift ended, and the next group of staff were escorted in.

Once home, she said she hadn’t had a bad feeling — but you just never know.

RCMP have persons of interest but, as of Monday, no charges have been laid.

They know where the calls came from and, had this been an episode of CSI, they would have triangulated the perpetrator’s position and immediately swooped in. Real life doesn’t move in TV time.

Nipawin is not much bigger than Pincher Creek. It seems the Lethbridge pub had a higher level of security than a public hospital.

Threats exist and we do need to take precautionary measures to protect ourselves, but I’m not sure if this is security or insecurity.

Colouring offers fun for adults, too

By Erin Fairhurst If you’ve ever found yourself doodling on a scrap of paper while chatting on the phone, or scribbling abstract designs in your notepad when you should be taking notes at a board meeting, then you might be ready for a new hobby — adult colouring.

“It doesn’t matter how old you are,” says Marion Kelsey, who recently moved to Crowsnest Pass from Ontario. “It’s not just for kids.”

Marion, 78, took up adult colouring eight years ago and hasn’t missed a day since. “I found it so relaxing, I couldn’t stop,” recalls Marion.

She’s not alone. Adult colouring is emerging as a growing hobby amongst adults of all ages. It’s a great way to relax, relieve stress and has also been shown to improve fine motor skills and concentration.

Adult colouring books are available in all sorts of themes — shapes, houses, gardens — and for all artistic abilities. And don’t worry, you won’t get in trouble for colouring outside the lines.

“You don’t have to be an artist to do this,” Marion promises. “You can start with something simple and go from there. Colouring is something that comes so naturally to us, it’s a skill we’ve had since we were children.”

For Marion, adult colouring has also proven to be a great way to meet people, thanks to a new program called Colour Yourself Happy, hosted

by Crowsnest Community Library. Adult colour-

ing classes are now taking place at the library on Tuesdays from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m and Thursdays from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Marion will be on hand to provide informal instruction and tips; and, printed colouring pages, pencils and gel pens are provided by the library to get participants started.

“I am getting to meet a lot of people by doing this, and I’m so happy about that!” says Marion.

Coleman resident Sharon Niemeyer attended one session earlier this month and enjoyed it so much that she returned for another. “I plan to keep coming back,” she says.

Erin Matthews brought her 84-year-old mother, Joan Shoesmith, to a session, and Erin said that she was surprised at how naturally it came. “I’m always doodling but I didn’t think anything of it. But it’s nice to discover some new skills.”

“There are so many options,” says Penny Warris, Marion’s daughter-in-law. “If you have physical ailments that prevent you from doing more active things, or if you’re just wanting to get out and try something new, this is definitely something to consider.”

So maybe it’s time to put down that tablet or turn off the television and try clearing your mind.

You’ll be surprised to discover your creative side, inside you all along.

A new prescription for fitness The Town of Pincher Creek and the Associate Medical Clinic have partnered to encourage our community to get active!

The newly launched Prescription for Fitness partnership program encourages doctors to write a prescription for fitness to those who may need a little extra incentive to make fitness and activity a priority.

The prescription can be presented at the swimming pool for a one-month membership, free of charge. As well, swimmers will receive 25 per cent off subsequent memberships and punch cards.

Participants can partake in activities including lane swimming, aqua fit, boot camp, swim clubs and private lessons.

The prescription can also be used for town recreation programs where participants will receive their first class free of charge and then 25 per cent off registration fees.

There are a wide range of eligible fitness pro-

grams for every age, fitness level and ability. Some of the classes included are gym walking, fitness break classes, yoga and Nia — which is a movement practice involving dance, martial arts and healing arts.

The program is not just about providing the facilities; participants will also be provided with a welcome package and support service from the town recreation facilities team.

A discussion about each individual’s needs and personal goals will encourage participants to find the right program for them. A tour of facilities and, if necessary, demonstration of equipment will be provided as part of the program.

The program is starting as a six-month trial and hopefully will continue into a long and successful partnership.

Protecting the Pass Crowsnest Pass Protective Services would like to make every effort to keep our community informed and educated on matters of safety. We are kicking off a weekly update with a few friendly reminders.

It’s 3 a.m. You discover an emergency in your home and promptly call 911. You describe the emergency and provide your address to the dispatch operator. A page goes out to the appropriate emergency service.

Now, in the event of a fire, it is relatively easy to locate the home – it is the one with the smoke and fire coming out of it. However, if this call regards a carbon monoxide emergency in the home, or a medical emergency, are you aware that it is rather difficult to respond in a timely fashion to your home if your address is not clearly visible from the street?

There are many homes in Crowsnest Pass that are not clearly marked. This includes many of the homes in the surrounding new residential developments. Valuable time may be lost searching for and/ or guessing if we have arrived at the correct address.

All emergency services rely on clear information in order to respond efficiently to your emergency.

You can help us all out by making sure your physical numeric address is clearly posted outside your home on the street side, and by making sure that this numeric address is lit so that it can be seen

at 3 a.m.

In addition, as we are working on launching our Fire Smart program in Crowsnest Pass, it is important to remember that burn permits are required for all burning of brush piles or any other type of outdoor fires between March 1 and Oct. 31.

Burn permits for municipal addresses are acquired through the fire department at 403-5628600. For those located in the forest protection area, permits are granted through the forestry office at 403-562-3210. Permits can be issued and revoked depending on factors such as weather conditions and fire risk status.

One final note from Protective Services. Please be aware that it is the law and, in general, a safe practice for everyone to make sure that their dog is properly leashed while enjoying a stroll through our beautiful community. Animals at large seems to be a frequent community complaint for the community peace officer to address.

You may have also noticed our community peace officer busy on the highway. Did you know that it is against the law to pass a vehicle using the right-hand lane? This includes passing a vehicle while it is waiting to turn unless it is a clearly marked through lane.

Raymond William Schaap 1934 – 2016

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Raymond William Schaap of Coleman. On Feb. 18, 2016, Ray was called to be with the Lord while receiving care at the Foothills Medical Centre in Calgary, after 81 years of a full life.

Ray was born on Dec. 21, 1934, in Nievweschoot, Netherlands, to proud parents Wiebren and Fim Schaap. He grew up to be a brave, dashing young man who joined the Canadian Army to protect his fellow countrymen. He was released from service on Sept. 23, 1954.

On May 5, 1962, Ray married his soulmate, Mona Yagos, and they were later blessed with a loving family of their own.

In his free time, Ray enjoyed camping, curling, playing pool and crib. He was an active and proud member of the Coleman branch of the Royal Canadian Legion, as well as being involved with the Masons and Elks.

Ray will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by all who knew him.

He is survived by his son, Howard (Ryan) Schaap of Brooks; his grandchildren, Natasha (John) Haluck, Frank Houda, Gregory Schaap, Kimberly Schaap, Taylor Schaap and Derek Schaap; his great-grandchildren, Rylan Carter Haluck and Serenity Haluck; his brother Henry (Mary) Schaap; his sister Ann Larue; extended family and the many friends that he made throughout his life.

He was predeceased by his parents, Wiebren and Fim Schaap; his loving wife, Mona Schaap; his beloved daughter, Patricia Schaap; his brothers Gus Schaap and Howard Schaap; and his sister Margaret Schaap.

The funeral service was held at Fantin’s Funeral Chapel in Blairmore on Feb. 26, 2016, with Rev. Renso Castellarin officiating.

Elks support Pincher Creek youth

By Brad Quarin Despite decreased membership, the Pincher Creek Elks continue to work to benefit their community.

Most recently, this service club put jackets on the backs of junior curlers in the Pincher Creek Curling Club by donating $1,000 toward these jackets.

“If we don’t sponsor junior curlers, we’re not going to have any curlers,” says exalted ruler Rick Clark. “I think it’s very important to keep the juniors going.”

Coach Glenda Kettles approached Rick about the need for jackets for the youth, who are in grades 6 to 9.

She felt the jackets, with emblems on the backs, could unite the young curlers and inspire team spirit.

Funds for the jackets were raised from various catering activities done by the Elks, Rick says.

Coaches and curlers had their jackets made at Crow Signs with the donation covering the entire cost. Glenda says she absolutely appreciates the kindness of the members of the Elks.

Rick is pleased with the results, too. “They look very nice,” he says.

Recently, the club also received a Certificate of Pink Prowess for hosting Wild Pink Yonder. This charitable society paraded its horses and riders through Pincher Creek in August, part of their

500-kilometre trail ride to raise money for cancer research.

Following the parade, the Elks served about 400 burgers at a supper held for Wild Pink Yonder.

Around $8,100 was raised in Pincher Creek alone, a strong showing for a small town and one of the Elks’ most successful fundraisers in recent years, he says.

“My pink cowboy hat is off to all of you,” wrote Jane Hurl, Wild Pink Yonder trail boss.

“Charlie Price and Ken Neumann are my two favourite Elks, not just in Pincher Creek, but anywhere. You men rock!”

Jane thanked the local Elks — and Charlie in particular — for cleaning up the road after Wild Pink Yonder passed through.

She reports that Pincher Creek has been a substantial help to Wild Pink Yonder, contributing to the $57,348.95 raised throughout Alberta in summer 2015. In seven years, Wild Pink Yonder has collected $804,532.31 throughout Western Canada.

Currently, the Pincher Creek Elks have 15 members. Rick says the club would like to recruit more members throughout the district, and would especially like some young people to join.
