Adriana believes the liquor purchase order that eventually led to Const.

Lawson’s death came from Rogers & Co. Ltd. on Sept. 14, 1922.

Picariello’s son Stefano (Steve) was involved in transporting the liquor from Fernie on Sept. 21, despite his mother’s objections.

When presented with a warrant on their arrival in Blairmore, Steve was warned by his father to run. He took off in a vehicle for British Columbia, but was chased by police and wounded.

Later, Picariello and Florence Lassandro confronted Const. Lawson at the Alberta Provincial Police building, where a struggle broke out and Const. Lawson was fatally shot.

The prosecution claimed the murder was motivated by Picariello’s uncertainty as to whether Steve had survived.

However, Adriana points out that Steve had actually called Picariello after making it to B.C. She also questions why a man who intended to commit a murder would take his friend’s wife, Florence Lassandro, with him.

Still, Picariello and Lassandro were convicted and executed, later inspiring the Calgary opera Filumena.

More myths sprung up after the incident, with the media claiming Emperor Pick made $500,000 through bootlegging. According to the exhibit, Picariello was in fact worth $80,439 at the time of his death.

Adriana recalls that she first became interested in Picariello while creating a website to celebrate Albertans of Italian descent.

The exhibit can be seen at Crowsnest Museum until the end of May, and her book is available in the gift shop.

After Adriana’s presentation, Chris Matthews, Crowsnest Museum executive director, announced the latest on the Alberta Provincial Police building in Coleman.

The museum has been renovating the building with the help of local contractors, and recently enlisted Westwind Design from Calgary to design the exhibit that will be inside.

Crowsnest Museum intends to open the Alberta Provincial Police building for Canada Day, 2017. Keep watching Shootin’ the Breeze for details.

The staff ’s approach to working with the parents is to act as role models in play, and answer any questions.

If the questions get big, they can refer parents to Bonita Bourlon, Parent Link’s family support coach.

Jacqui emphasizes that the Family Centre is a welcoming place, even if it’s intimidating for parents to walk into a big group the first time.

The Family Centre is also offering extended hours, with drop-in playtime on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons.

The staff are happy with their workplace, but it’s the people who fill it, including the little ones, that makes it special.

“I don’t think any of them have a hard time getting out of bed and coming to work,” La Vonne says.

“Not at all,” Jacqui agrees.

Nominate a volunteer

By Brad Quarin Many of the events and services in Crowsnest Pass continue to be available thanks to volunteers.

Some of these indispensable volunteers remain unsung, and residents may know who is due for thanks.

“We encourage people to take a look around the community,” says Kim Lewis, programmer of Family and Community Support Services.

FCSS is currently accepting nominations for the Order of Crowsnest Pass and the Order of Crowsnest Pass Outstanding Youth Award. The deadline for nominations is March 25.

The annual honours go to people who have made important contributions to the community in their role as volunteers.

“We’d like to see them acknowledged,” Kim says.

The Outstanding Youth Award is given to volunteers between 12 and 18.

Nomination forms are available at Bellevue’s M.D. McEachern Community Cen-

tre, the municipal office and at www.crowsnestpass.com/living-here/community-services/ family-and-community-support-services.

A committee made up of FCSS board members, who are themselves volunteers and residents of the community, will decide on the recipients of the awards.

This committee also oversees the department and chooses community groups to receive grant funding, reports Kim. They usually receive between 10 and 15 nominations for the Order of Crowsnest Pass and between three and five for the Outstanding Youth Award.

Last year, the committee had such difficulty deciding between impressive nominees that three worthy individuals were chosen.

However, one is the norm, and the number of recipients this year will depend on the nominations, she says.

Recipients will be announced at a volunteer appreciation night at MDM on April 15.

My Little Corner It’s music festival week, and musicians of all ages will take turns playing and singing, then awaiting comments from the adjudicator.

It’s the culmination of months and even years of hard work. This doesn’t all rest on the student — it takes dedicated teachers and supportive families to bring the whole thing together.

For some, performance is natural and every opportunity to take to the stage is relished.

For others, it takes every ounce of courage to take their place in front of the adjudicator.

For all, it is a learning experience.

My own music festival days began when I was 10 and took to the stage with my guitar and clarinet, and a few years later piano was added to the repertoire.

Fifteen years later, I attended as a teacher and discovered how much there was to learn. Finally, I was there as a parent and felt I had come full circle.

Ranchers recall a moment in the spotlight

By Brad Quarin The world’s eye was turned to Sierra West Cabins and Ranch Vacations again this February.

Makers of the American TV series Born to Explore notified the tourist-attraction owners that the episode showcasing their ranch, north of Lundbreck, would be aired for a second time.

That allowed owners Randy and Ginny Donahue the opportunity to reminisce about hosting Born to Explore star Richard Wiese and his crew back in July 2014.

“It was all very good and a lot of fun, and the whole crew was great to work with,” Ginny says.

The experience was a chance to share western and ranching culture with a broader audience, something Sierra West is well suited to do.

Randy notes the business is based in the foothills, surrounded by ranchland, and cows and horses have long been a part of his life.

The Donahues established a visitors’ cabin and an antique store on their ranch in 2001, and began offering accommodations and a

taste of the ranching lifestyle.

Travel Alberta named Sierra West Cabins and Ranch Vacations an Alberta Story in 2012. More recently, Sierra West received the Alberta Pride honour at the Alberta Tourism Awards in 2015.

It was through Travel Alberta that the Born to Explore crew first heard about Sierra West, Ginny says.

Previously, Sierra West had been a filming location for Alberta beef commercials, GMC truck launches and more.

However, receiving the call from Born to Explore was something different. “We were pretty excited, because we’re always up for a challenge,” Ginny says.

Mr. Wiese and a crew of about eight people arrived at the ranch in the summer, planning to stay overnight, learn to ride and try a cattle drive.

What was planned as a 10-minute segment of the show turned into a whole episode on Sierra West, Randy says.

As Mr. Wiese explained on the show, he wanted to learn whether it was true that everyone has a little bit of cowboy inside.

Randy believes that it’s true for 90 per cent of the guests at Sierra West. “Everybody we get here wants to be a cowboy,” he says.

At the very least, visitors are interested in returning to their roots and having the right to say they’ve had the experience, Ginny says.

Mr. Wiese turned out to be an apt pupil.

“He was a really good go-getter,” Randy says.

Ginny recalls Mr. Wiese as interested in learning the lifestyle and listening to what they had to say.

Before taking the TV host on a real cattle drive, the Donahues first had Mr. Wiese practise roping a plastic steer head, known as a dummy head.

The video showing Mr. Wiese lassoing the dummy head on his first throw was recently shared on The Town of Pincher Creek’s Facebook page.

Randy says it was nice to see himself on TV. More importantly, the experience and the episode have immortalized Sierra West Cabins and Ranch Vacations.

The episode will air again on July 16.

Famed fiddlers return for concert and workshop

By Erin Fairhurst What do an Irish Washerwoman, a Little Burnt Potato and an Old Red Barn have in common? Why, they’re all fiddle tunes, of course!

Last March, renowned Canadian fiddlers JJ Guy and Gordon Stobbe added the Crowsnest Pass to their list of tour destinations, and they had so much fun that they’ve decided to come back.

The Crowsnest Pass Allied Arts Association is proud to present an evening of live fiddle music, and the odd wisecrack between songs, at the Crowsnest Pass Public Art Gallery on March 20 at 7 p.m.

Tickets are $10 each and are being sold at Scotiabank in Blairmore.

JJ and Gordon will be joined by Korri Spruyt on the piano and they’ll be playing an assortment of old-time fiddle tunes and original compositions.

Prior to the concert, a fiddle and piano workshop will be held at Isabelle Sellon School in Blairmore from 2 to 4:30 p.m.

JJ, Gordon and Korri will work with participants of all levels of ability and will share tips, tricks and tried-and-true techniques to improve playing and boost confidence.

Once you’ve learned from these guys, the hardest part about fiddling will be choosing which plaid shirt to wear to your next jam session!

The cost of the workshop is $25 and participants must register in advance through the Crowsnest Pass Public Art Gallery at 403-5622218.

After Hours event attracts full house

By Erin Fairhurst It was a festive night at the Crowsnest Pass Chamber of Commerce After Hours event, hosted by Servus Credit Union.

The event took place Feb. 25 at the newly unveiled Ironstone show home in Coleman.

Guests were treated to refreshments and a tour of the four-bedroom, three-bath bungalow built

Community Builds Assets

By Aimee Lahoda, Grade 10, CCHS Commitment to Learning Asset 21: Achievement Motivation — Crowsnest Consolidated High School students have completed their first semester this school year.

To ensure that your child is motivated to do well in school, make sure they are engaged in what they are learning. Help them be aware of the rewards of doing well in school. This can be a great motivator.

Asset 22: School Engagement — Kids can be actively engaged in their school throughout the entire year. School staff and parents can help kids stay engaged by getting involved in school activities and afterschool programs.

Asset 23: Homework — Youth should be doing homework daily.

This can be as little as 10 minutes per day and is a great opportunity for them to share what they are learning.

Asset 25: Reading for Pleasure — Youth should read on a regular basis just because they like to. The One Book, Two Schools book choice, Ivan, was a great kickoff for building this asset. We also saw the COW Bus and the Blairmore library literacy challenge get all ages reading.

This spring, keep your eye out for little free libraries throughout the Crowsnest Pass. Find a book to read or share one you’ve enjoyed! You can build Asset 25 by helping youth find books that they might enjoy, and by reading them yourself and then sharing your thoughts.

Silver Reins 4-H Report

By Alex Russell Silver Reins 4-H Light Horse Club is well into the 4-H season.

These past few months have been very eventful for the club; we have taken part in trail, gymkhana and western pleasure lessons. We are also hoping to take part in a western dressage clinic that our five-year instructor Karen Jarvie would instruct us through.

Silver Reins also hosted the district communications night. This event included clubs from our district coming together to be instructed on how to better their 4-H communications night, and individually, to become better public speakers and presenters.

Silver Reins also have their annual and mandatory public speaking night approaching very quickly. Members from the club have been working hard to prepare themselves and their speech or presentation for the judges.

This is always an exciting and nerve-racking event for all ages of members. Standing up and being judged on what you are saying and how you are saying it is not always as easy as it seems.

New members seem to be enjoying themselves, and have begun to check off accomplished mounted and unmounted skills.

Each member has learned a lot about themself and the relationship they have with their horse. As that relationship continues to grow for the rest of the 4-H season, the members are looking forward to finishing off levels in their books, reaching their goals for the season and then making new ones.

By Brad Quarin Spring is almost here and parents may be keen to get their children out of the house and busy with an activity. And some parents may be looking for a new activity for themselves.

Fortunately, the Community Spring and Summer Registration and Information Night has arrived, taking place Thursday at the Pincher Creek pool lobby, from 6 to 8 p.m.

This year, the event will see five new groups participating, recruiting new members and sharing information.

There are a total of 20 groups represented, higher than usual, says organizer Rhonda Oczkowski. She says she has been busy contacting activity groups of all kinds, informing them of the evening and inviting them to take advantage of the event.

Some of the activities you can check out and sign up for are baseball, kayaking, air cadets, archery, football and swimming.

Adults may be interested in volunteering for community groups like the Pincher Planters and Communities in Bloom, Rhonda says.

Aside from sparing parents the struggle of finding out when they have to register for different clubs, the evening is beneficial for explaining how to access services like KidSport.

Rhonda has been busy spreading word of the evening, and flyers have been sent to the local schools. Registration night is usually well attended so don’t forget this important date!

Chamber recruiting board members at AGM

By Brad Quarin The Pincher Creek and District Chamber of Commerce has been a force for good in this community.

The chamber’s annual general meeting, to be held next Wednesday, is an opportunity for the community to learn more about this organization and even to take an active role by becoming a board member.

“The chamber of commerce runs events that not only benefit the community people, but our own membership,” says president Sharon Roberts.

Chamber events often highlight member businesses and promote local shopping. “It should be win-win for the community and the chamber members.”

The chamber’s bylaw allows for a maximum of 12 board members. The chamber would benefit from filling three or four spots, says Sharon.

Chamber members who wish to run for the board can notify administrator Lieve Parisis of their candidacies at 403-627-5199. You can also put forward your name at the AGM. If there are only 12 candidates standing for the board, they will be acclaimed, Sharon says.

If there are more, there would be a vote among chamber members, with each business represented by one voter. It would be ideal if voters could choose from a list of candidates.

Having a bigger board would also mean responsibilities could be shared evenly, reducing the burden on everyone.

The chamber’s funds are limited, so it is also helpful when jobs can be done by volunteer board members or chamber members, rather than a paid employee.

Sharon herself is finishing her third year as president, during five years of involvement in the chamber.

Joining the chamber made sense as the manager of a business, First Student, and because Sharon enjoys participating in community events. From vice-president, she moved up to president.

It took some time commitment. Following the advice of a past president, Sharon has tried

to make herself available to all chamber committees and to be present at all events.

There have been rewards. Highlights of the past five years include launching the chamber’s golf tournament five years ago.

As a golfer, Sharon describes the tournament as her “pet project.”

The board also revived the Pincher Creek Trade Show, which she feels benefits the community.

There have been challenges too, such as a few disappointing turnouts and our present economic downturn. Still, Sharon says it’s a good experience, and she is proud of making more business owners aware of the benefits of joining the chamber.

The AGM takes place at Heritage Inn from 11:45 a.m. to 1 p.m. The luncheon costs $20 for members and $23 for non-members.

Crowsnest Pass Protective Services Weekly Bulletin Feb. 29, 2016

Crowsnest Pass Fire/Rescue responded to 10 calls in the month of February, including five calls to set up a landing zone for the STARS helicopter.

Feb. 10, 11, 14, 15 and 17: Fire/Rescue crews set up STARS landing at the forestry helipad in Blairmore.

Feb. 14, 2016: A crew responded to a medical firstresponse call in Blairmore.

Feb. 17, 2016: Two trucks responded to spot fires that were started on CP Rail train tracks near Leitch Collieries.

Feb. 21, 2016: Fire/Rescue received a mutual-aid call requesting possible assistance with backcountry search in Pincher Creek area. Members remained on standby until released.

Feb. 25, 2016: Call received regarding a backcountry rescue originating from the Atlas staging area outside of Coleman. A Calgary man was reported stranded and injured about 14 kilometres from the staging area. The snowmobile was stuck in the trees and the rider had an injury to his knee. Upon arrival, the rider was standing on his own and was transported via civilian pickup.

Feb. 27, 2016: Crews responded to two calls. The first was a false alarm originating from a cooking incident

in Frank, setting off an automated alarm system. The second was an automobile that had caught fire and was igniting some of the surrounding trees in the Star Creek Falls area.

Agriculture and Environment Protection Services is in the process of hiring two students for the busy summer ahead.

Agriculture Services is responsible for the enforcement and control of noxious weeds and the elimination of prohibited noxious weeds. Particular attention is paid to riparian areas and restoration of bed and shore along our waterways.

The community peace officer, along with our protective services partner, BearSmart, would like to remind residents and visitors alike that residential garbage should be placed in a well-contained container no sooner than 7 a.m. on their respective garbage days.

Garbage scattered by wind or neighbourhood critters easily becomes an attractant for bears and other wildlife.

Bears are going to be out sooner this year due to the milder temperatures.

Residents who choose to put their garbage out sooner may be subject to fines in accordance with our

Community Standards municipal bylaw.

Our newly formed Fire Smart crew commenced work this week preparing for the anticipated early start to our wildland fire season.

The Fire Smart program is a new project designed to proactively protect our community in regards to wildfires. This program will focus on education, prevention and activation of fire suppression efforts regarding the wildlands in our immediate area.

This crew will be educating the public on how they can best protect their properties from wildfires, control some of our higher-risk areas through lowering the fuel loads in these areas, and preparing for wildland fire suppression in surrounding areas.

Crowsnest Pass Fire/Rescue would also like to announce that it is important to test and refill your residential and commercial fire extinguishers.

This is a service that Crowsnest Pass Fire/Rescue now offers. Prices will vary depending on the size of your extinguisher.

Winter in Alberta Photo Contest – adult winners The third annual Winter in Alberta photo contest attracted 44 entries this year.

Winners in the adult category are: first place, “The Snowy Day” by Tom Chandler of Pincher Creek, top left; second place, “Winter Walk” by Amber MacKinnon of Cowley, bottom left; and third place, “Fire and Ice” by Stacy William Head of Crowsnest Pass.

Winners in the youth category are: first place, “Pro Flo” by Megan Koevoet; second place, “The Pass” by Megan Koevoet; and third place, “Waterton’s Mirror” by Kendra Tregillus. Their photos were featured in last week’s issue and can be viewed online at www.shootinthebreeze.ca.

The contest was jointly sponsored by Shootin’ the Breeze and Crowsnest Pass Allied Arts as a Wintervention event.

Entries were scored by a panel of three judges and winners share the proceeds of the entry fees.

All contest entries are on display until March 11 at the gallery in Frank. The display will move to the Pincher Creek office of Shootin’ the Breeze the following week. Please plan to visit either location to view the photo entries.
