Adventurer skis through Antarctica to South Pole

By Brad Quarin In a way, Hugh Dougall was fulfilling his destiny when he put on his backcountry skis and trekked through Antarctica, eventually reaching the South Pole.

Hugh, who spends his weekends in the Pincher Creek area, claims Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen as an ancestor. Amundsen was on the expedition that first reached the South Pole in 1911.

Hugh says Amundsen was his greatgrandfather’s cousin, and Hugh grew up hearing of his exploits. Hugh never met him, as Amundsen died in 1928, and never thought he would follow in his footsteps.

However, as he gained experience skiing, Hugh realized the trip would be possible, though still a

challenge.

“It’s mostly a mental challenge,” he says. “It’s meditative to me.”

He had a chance to recall this journey, made between November 2013 and January 2014, when he spoke at a fundraiser for the Livingstone Landowners Guild this January.

Hugh says he has been skiing since he was nine, moving from downhill to cross-country and then to backcountry skiing.

Currently, he is a surgeon in Calgary, specializing in bones and joints. For the past five years, he has also owned a ranch off Highway 22.

He explains that he was “looking for a place to get away,” and was drawn to the area because his grandparents lived in Claresholm.

“It seemed like home to me,” he says.

Now nearing 60, Hugh says he is close to the end of his medical career, meaning he can afford to sacrifice 2½ months of work to ski trips like these.

Backcountry skiing provides a marked difference from his noisy and busy profession. “You don’t have to think about it,” he says. “It’s a pretty simple life.”

He finds the activity exciting, but not in a way that provides an adrenaline rush.

In 2013, he became acquainted with longdistance skiing on a trek through Greenland and the Arctic Circle.

He had actually been to Antarctica before, sailing on a research vessel that travelled to this barren and isolated continent in 2002. Hugh is that rare See SOUTH POLE, continued on page 3

To get the chance to ski through Antarctica, Hugh required experience.

A fee was also required.

In preparation for the trip, he pulled a railroad tie across gravel roads around Chapel Rock, duplicating the experience of pulling a sled while skiing. The railroad tie, at 5½ feet long, let him deal with friction.

Going into the expedition, he expected skiing through Antarctica would be a little like Greenland, only with 24-hour sunlight. However, he found it to be a much drier climate.

Upon reaching Antarctica from Chile, Hugh and his team began skiing, staying mostly in Chilean Antarctic Territory, a disputed region of the continent.

As the continent has no permanent population, the few people he met were tourists. He saw no birds and no plant life while skiing.

He likens skiing in Antarctica to being on the sea, since there are no landmarks.

It got colder towards the South Pole, reports Hugh. Temperatures dropped from -15 C to -30 C, but he

was not too cold with all the work of skiing.

With backcountry skis, which are larger than cross-country skis, he and his team travelled between 20 and 25 kilometres each day. They were on skis for 10 hours per day, with breaks every hour and 50 minutes.

You have to be fit to make the trip, but Hugh notes he is not at the pinnacle of his health, given his age.

Mental games are more important to get you through the expedition, he says.

Different people do it different ways, but Hugh’s approach was not to listen to music but, instead, to let his mind wander.

This led him to thoughts of old friends and of his parents. Things he hadn’t thought about in 30 years resurfaced in his memory.

Hugh has now shared an experience with one of his ancestors, albeit in a safer way.

Although the ski trip to the South Pole and back was a positive experience, he says he wouldn’t do it again if the opportunity came up. He is more interested in new adventures and different experiences.

I’m excited about what you’ll find on page 15 of this week’s issue — the community calendar is back!

Community groups benefited from free listings in the calendar for almost five years, thanks to the generous advertising sponsorship of Teck and Shell Waterton. Our readers benefited from having event information at their fingertips every week. Many have told us the page found its way to their fridge every Wednesday.

Making the call to pull the calendar while we came up with a payment structure was a tough one. I’ve responded to many phone calls and email messages since early February. No one likes change, but most understand that it isn’t feasible to continue as a free service.

Our previous format allowed for only one week of events to be printed in each issue and was limited to the name of the event, the date, time and place. With a paid model, those wishing to list their events can provide as much or as little information as they choose, and can have the event listed as far in advance as they like.

The goal was to come up with pricing that covered the cost of the setup and space and to make things as economically feasible as possible.

Many of our regular calendar users are groups with limited advertising budgets. If your event information is 25 words or less, running it for three weeks costs only $20. This is a steal of a deal!

If you wish to include more information, there is a small charge for additional words. The Practical Creativity workshop in this week’s calendar is a great example.

As in the past, those promoting their events with regular display advertising will continue to receive a complimentary listing in the calendar. This is a perk Shootin’ the Breeze offers to our advertisers.

Thanks from a Champ I am a double leg amputee and a member of CHAMP — the War Amps Child Amputee Program.

Thanks to public support of the War Amps key tag service, I have attended regional CHAMP seminars where Champs and their parents learn about the latest in artificial limbs, teasing and bullying, and how to parent an amputee child.

I have been a junior counsellor at the seminars, acting as a role model and giving advice to the younger Champs. The seminars let child amputees know they aren’t alone and that the sky is the limit.

I am also a multisport athlete, and donations to the key tag service have allowed me to be fitted with recreational

This year is the 70th anniversary of the War Amps key tag service. To date, more than 1.5 million sets of lost keys have been returned to their owners.

Although it is a free service, donations made provide young amputees with financial assistance for artificial limbs and allow us to go to regional seminars.

An adjudi-what?

By Erin Fairhurst After a whirlwind week of performances, the Crowsnest Pass Music Festival is now over for another year.

Performers, teachers, parents and audience members no doubt still have smiles on their faces as they relive some of their favourite moments of the festival.

And none of those moments would have been possible without the small group of people who vanish just as soon as the festival is over — the adjudicators.

The what’s that now?

The presence of adjudicators at a music festival is what differentiates formal festivals from other performance opportunities like concerts or exhibitions.

Adjudicators are experts in their fields — be it voice, choral speech, piano or strings — and are neutral parties who evaluate performers and provide valuable feedback designed to help them grow.

Adjudicators are selected by the Crowsnest Pass Music Festival Committee based on experience, references and compatibility; and, are interviewed prior to being invited to adjudicate.

Adjudicators for this year’s festival were Diane Llewelyn-Jones for voice and school music and choral speech, Olena Kilchyk for strings (bowed and fretted) and school and community music, and Lana Henchell for piano.

Tuesday’s evening session at Isabelle Sellon School in Blairmore offered a great opportunity for audience members to truly see an adjudicator in action, as Diane presided over the musical theatre performances.

As a professional choreographer, Diane put her background to use as she coached participants on how to use movement to effectively enhance their performances.

“In musical theatre we need to use every element of the performance — whether it’s a costume or a stage prop or choreography — to tell the story,” she explained to the evening’s participants

and audience members.

After each performance, Diane would spend some time writing out her evaluation, and then would call the performer back to the stage to address the performance.

The Crowsnest Pass Music Festival is a non-competitive festival, so performers do not receive marks or placements. The focus of the adjudication is strictly to provide constructive feedback and expert critique.

“I liked how you played off one another, you showed great teamwork,” Diane told the Boys and Girls Club improvisational group.

In lieu of a traditional script, the drama ensemble was given a scant note card bearing a suggestion for a skit.

They also had the added challenge of following the suggestion on the note card as closely as possible in order to demonstrate they were truly improvising their material.

The skit that ensued was based on a randomly selected card that read “An Emotional Party.”

“You made good choices,” Diane told the group during the adjudication.

“You used the stage well and your story had a beginning, a middle and an end, which is hard to do!”

The Tuesday evening session marked the end of the vocal component of the festival. Longtime festival secretary Brenda Davison shared her thoughts on working with Diane with the audience.

“It’s been a pleasure to sit beside her,” Brenda said. “She’s a gifted teacher.

I’ve watched how the kids have just trusted her and it’s pushed them to become better performers.”

“Thanks for allowing me to come into your community,” Diane said as the audience applauded. “It’s a beautiful one and you have so much to be proud of.”

By Brad Quarin Anyone looking to catch some exciting basketball games this weekend can watch the boys 1A basketball provincial championships, right in Pincher Creek, thanks to Livingstone School in Lundbreck.

“It’s a huge event,” says Duane DeCock, head coach of the Livingstone Sabres. “It’s the highlight of the season.”

Livingstone School placed a bid to host the championships a few years ago. Students are buzzing with excitement about having the Alberta championships right here.

Duane adds that the event is great because teams and coaches from around the province get a chance to meet.

Although Livingstone School is the organizer of the tournament, the opening ceremonies and the games will take place at Matthew Halton High School.

MHHS offers more space and more seating, he explains.

Twelve teams from around Alberta will play, with boys from grades 9 to 12. The Livingstone Sabres, made up of boys from grades 10 to 12, will be among the competitors.

Everything will start with a breakfast for teams and coaches on Thursday morning at Pincher Creek Community Hall.

Following breakfast, students from Livingstone School will be bused to MHHS to see the opening ceremonies.

The teams will parade into the gym, with local dignitaries in attendance. Livingstone School principal Chad Jensen will welcome the teams, their coaches and all visitors, Duane says.

A banquet for the teams and coaches will be held that evening.

The games run Thursday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Friday and Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. A weekend pass is $20.

Seniors have aces up their sleeves

By Brad Quarin The York Creek Lodge residents group found a fun way to raise cash for its busing needs — have a crib tournament.

The first tournament went over so well that it will now be held every two months, says Carman Graf, activities co-ordinator.

York Creek Lodge invites its Blairmore residents and seniors and families from around Crowsnest Pass to play for $10 each.

They hold a 50-50 draw at the same time, profits that also go toward busing.

The money raised pays for their bus trips and vehicle repairs.

The Crowsnest Pass Allied Arts Association, in

partnership with the Allied Arts Council of Pincher Creek, has been bringing award-winning films to moviegoers of Pincher Creek and Crowsnest Pass for 15 years.

This year they are showcasing a selection of these world-class productions at a world-class venue: the Frank Slide Interpretive Centre.

On Monday, March 21, James White will be playing at 7 p.m. Cynthia Nixon and Christopher Abbott star in this bittersweet film about a mother and son whose difficult relationship must be renavigated in the face of terminal cancer.

The final film of the season, Our Loved Ones, will play on Monday, April 4, at 7 p.m at the inter-

pretive centre.

With Canadian director Anne Emond at the helm of this family drama, Our Loved Ones takes place over a quarter of a century, following the lives of a father and daughter, played by Maxim Gaudette and Karelle Tremblay. Their lives are affected by mental illness — and the ties that bind.

By Brad Quarin This year’s Wintervention kicked off with a ukulele jam.

The “entry fee” to the jam was an item donated to the Crowsnest Pass Food Bank. And, at the end of the winter carnival, a silent-auction item yielded a monetary contribution for the food bank.

This was the second year Wintervention co-ordinators chose to support the food bank with their event.

“Last year, we wanted to do something for the community, especially for people that can’t attend these events because of their economic wellbeing,” says co-ordinator Randall Shemko.

“Last year was a great success, and we decided that this was an item that we wanted to do every year.”

This time, proceeds from the silent-auction item donated by the Blairmore IGA, along with a silver collection, added up to $314.49.

While businesses were generous, Randall notes that the highest bidder was an individual, namely Helene Juhlin.

That money, along with the food gathered from the ukulele jam, all went to the food bank.

“It’s a great donation,” says Desiree Simoneau, food bank co-ordinator. “It’s good, quality food for the food bank and a financial donation to purchase goods.”

Survey seeks views on physician-assisted death

By Brad Quarin In the wake of a landmark Supreme Court decision finding adult Canadians have a right to ask for euthanasia, the Alberta government is reaching out to the public for feedback.

“I think this is a really important public policy discussion,” says Brandy Payne, associate minister of health.

That is why she is encouraging local people to take the online survey that asks for direction in how to regulate and implement the policy.

Ms. Payne notes that most Albertans have lost someone dear to an illness, so the issue will resonate with everyone.

Public feedback, along with federal amendments to the Criminal Code and consultation with members of the medical community, will be considered in crafting provincial legislation.

The challenge is to balance the rights of the patient, the rights of doctors and protection of the vulnerable, Ms. Payne says.

And certainly, locals will have strong opinions on the matter. Dr. John Rottger from the Pincher

Creek Associate Clinic notes that this is a particularly divisive issue.

Dr. Peter McKernan of Crowsnest Medical Clinic encourages people who don’t have strong views to also participate in the survey.

“It is important that we hear all viewpoints,” he says. It is valuable to know the thoughts of the majority, not just those with the loudest voices.

While the Supreme Court has decided adults have a right to ask for euthanasia, it’s the specifics that still need to be determined, Dr. McKernan says.

The physician-assisted death public survey covers questions such as whether a patient should have to ask twice for euthanasia and whether it should be available to a minor.

It also asks whether Albertans feel the regulations, such as the requirement that two physicians document that the patient has been fully informed, and that two witnesses oversee the patient’s decision, are enough to protect vulnerable patients.

Dr. Rottger, as co-chairman of the ethics com-

mittee in the south zone, is very interested in the issue.

He says it’s not doctors who made assisted death legal, but rather the Supreme Court. He believes, based on research, that 29 per cent of doctors would assist in euthanasia.

With such a variety of opinions on the matter, it is possible the laws will be pretty different province by province, Dr. Rottger says. He notes that Quebec chose to make assisted death available to terminally ill patients only.

Dr. Rottger expects to take the survey himself.

Dr. McKernan feels it is important that Canadians have equal access to their rights, and that doctors are the most logical people to assist in euthanasia.

A separate survey revealed that there are doctors in all five Alberta zones willing to assist, he says.

The last day to take the public survey will be March 31. It is available at www.health.alberta.ca.

Mobile computer service rolls into the area

By Brad Quarin Computers can solve a lot of problems, and they can also cause headaches.

Luckily, computer owners in Pincher Creek have a new resource to help with hardware, software and networking problems, with Mr-b Computer Services.

“I just want to cover this area, so everyone has reliable service,” says Brian Kitchen, owner and namesake of the new business.

Mr-b Computer Services, based in Glenwood and covering Pincher Creek, Fort Macleod and Cardston, is a novel concept.

It’s a mobile computer lab, operating out of a bus, driven by Brian.

He will come right up to a customer’s house or business, and visits Pincher Creek on Wednesdays.

Brian got the idea from past experiences, working on a computer at a client’s house. Often, he would find he was missing a part.

He realized it might be a smart idea to put his computer lab into a vehicle, thereby carrying extra

Waterton closures Over the next five years, $2.6 billion is to be invested in infrastructure projects in national parks, historic sites and conservation areas.

Several such projects will impact Waterton this year. Parks Canada has issued a list of Waterton sites that will be either closed to visitors or impacted in a major way this spring and summer.

The Cameron Lake day-use area will be closed from April through November of this year in order to replace existing facilities. This means that the lakeshore trail will not be accessible during construction.

The Akamina Parkway (the road one takes to Cameron Lake) will be closed to all traffic, including pedestrians and cyclists.

Parks Canada is pursuing a complimentary shuttle service to ensure continued access to all trails along the Akamina Parkway, including Carthew-Alderson and Summit Lake. However, some trailheads may be temporarily closed and then reopened as work is completed.

The Red Rock Parkway, closed at this time, will reopen on May 6 for public use — but on weekends only. During this period, visitors can access the parkway from Fridays at 2 p.m. until Sundays at 4 p.m.

For the May long weekend, the Red Rock Parkway will be open from 2 p.m. Friday, May 20, to 4 p.m. Monday, May 23.

Beginning on June 17 at 2 p.m., the Parkway will open seven days a week. This follows the completion of roadwork. Any final roadwork will be carried out during a two- to three-week closure in September.

Crandell Mountain Campground will open on May 20.

Although yet to be confirmed, the viewing platforms at Blakiston Falls will be closed until June and the trail to Blakiston Falls will be closed for one week to repair a portion of the path. During this closure, access to Tamarack Trail will be available through Snowshoe Trail. For the remainder of the spring and summer, the Blakiston Valley Trail will remain open.

Other construction includes staff housing on Clematis Avenue between the United church and the Latter-day Saints church. This project will begin in April and will replace existing Parks Canada housing.

Water and sewer upgrades will continue along Evergreen Avenue, north of Cameron Falls. This street will be closed to the public. Access to Cameron Falls will be available through Fountain Avenue.

Leaseholders will still have access to Evergreen Avenue during construction.

Regular updates will be issued as information is confirmed. Visitors to the park are encouraged to consult the Waterton Lakes National Park website at www.pc.gc.ca/waterton for the latest updated information and a map of projects.

By Brad Quarin There will be something for all ages at the next Kananaskis Pro Rodeo in April, thanks to a generous donation from the Crowsnest Pass Agricultural Society.

Ag society member Lorraine Halton recently presented a $7,000 cheque to Joe Trotz, Kananaskis Rodeo Association president.

The donation will help sponsor the junior/ senior portion of the rodeo as well as the mutton bustin’ event held during intermission, Joe says. The funding will pay for some

of the stock and help cover the cost of renting the arena.

The ag society receives grants from the government that it can distribute to other non-profit community groups, Lorraine says.

The Kananaskis Pro Rodeo has been a beneficiary in the past. This year, the ag society saw value in the rodeo events that offer agriculture-based activities to youth.

“We really like to thank the ag society for this funding,” Joe says. “Without them, I don’t think we’d be able to do what we can at our rodeo.”

Figure skaters will travel through space and time

By Brad Quarin This weekend, the young figure skaters of Crowsnest Pass and Pincher Creek will take audiences around the world and through time, as the individual skating clubs present their annual carnivals.

Both carnivals are open to the public and each will provide a variety of entertaining moments.

The Crowsnest Pass Skating Club will stage its carnival at 6:30 p.m. on Friday in Crowsnest Sports Complex.

This year’s theme is Dancing Through Time, says club president Linda Dorge.

Music from the 1980s to today will play as skaters perform a variety of dances on ice, such as country, hip hop, jazz and ballroom dancing.

All 40 skaters in the club will be performing in the carnival, with children ranging in age from three to 16.

Their coaches will be the guest skaters in the show, Linda says.

The children have been practising for the event for weeks.

Admission is $10 for adults, $5 for children six to 12 and free for children five and under. There will also be a progressive 50-50 draw.

On Saturday, the Pincher Creek carnival will take place in the Memorial Community Centre Arena, starting at 2 p.m.

“It’s a nice afternoon event,” says Allison Malhi, president of the Pincher Creek Skating Club.

The theme for this year’s carnival is Around the World.

Skaters will perform to music from many different places, including Canada, Russia, Egypt, India and Africa. There will also be a traditional Ukrainian song. “The France song is very Parisian,” Allison says.

There are 56 children in the club, from three to 17, and all will be featured in the show. They have been preparing for it since October, she says.

Some of the younger skaters will perform in groups. Pre-CanSkaters, aged three and up, will be divided into two groups.

The Pincher Creek club is hoping to make the carnival more accessible by offering free admission. There is a program available for $2 and a chance to win a door prize, explains Allison.

The carnival is expected to last for an hour and a half.

End of Seed Benefit supports STARS Submitted by STARS Foundation Every day, we hear from patients we’ve carried.

Some want to visit the base and peek at the helicopter.

Others plan to drop off a note or donation.

The majority have their hearts set on meeting the men and women who cared for them on their darkest day.

They want to shake hands, give a hug and say thank you.

What many people don’t realize is that those visits, notes, hugs and handshakes mean as much to the paramedics, nurses, doctors, pilots and rest of the staff as they do for the patient.

Flight nurse Pat Jeffrey — who has been with STARS since the early days — finds inspiration in every returning visitor.

“When a patient I have cared for drops by and smiles, it is truly a heartfelt moment,” she says.

“No matter how serious their injury or illness, they are so happy and thankful to be alive. As a critical care nurse, I know the road to recovery is often a long and painful one, filled with struggle, setbacks and determination. The strength and resolve these former patients and their families show is unbelievable.”

STARS’ very first patient was Kelly Hulstein, who was only hours old when she was flown from Lethbridge to Calgary. She and her twin brother were born more than two months prematurely and faced an uncertain future.

While Travis was flown by fixed-wing from Medicine Hat, Kelly was picked up by STARS and taken to Foothills

Hospital.

When that tiny baby was flown on Dec. 1, 1985, STARS too was in its infancy. The pilots were volunteers, the air medical crew just new to aviation and donors were few and far between.

Both Kelly and STARS had a rocky start. Both found a way to persevere.

Three decades later, STARS has carried out more than 30,000 missions.

For us, however, it’s not just about 30,000 missions.

It’s about 30,000 families, 30,000 communities or 30,000 workplaces and schools. It’s incredible how having the privilege of caring for one individual can touch so many.

“My family has been grateful to STARS for 30 years,” says Kelly, who is a partner at a Lethbridge accounting firm. “We all know I couldn’t have celebrated my 30th birthday if STARS didn’t pick me up that day.”

Passtrak athletes excel at indoor championships Submitted by Ritch Braun Passtrak, the Crowsnest Pass track and field club, had five athletes take part in the provincial indoor championships in Edmonton on March 5 and 6.

They competed in a total of 24 events, where they produced 10 lifetime-best performances and also set two new Passtrak club records.

Clara Websdale was in the peewee girls group, who are 10- and 11-year-olds. She had the best long jump of her life, spanning 2.67 metres, and ran the fastest 600 metres of her life as well, in 2 minutes 35.15 seconds. She also set a new Passtrak club record in the standing long jump by leaping 1.29 metres.

Sawyer Sawatzky represented the club in the peewee boys age group. He tied his lifetime best in the long jump at 2.93 metres, then chopped 11 seconds off his previous best in the 600 metres by finishing in 2:38.29. He broke the existing Passtrak club record in the standing long jump by 23 centimetres with a jump of 1.69 metres.

Paige Richards was in the bantam girls category, for 12- and 13-year-old athletes. She improved dramatically in both of the events she had previously competed in. She dropped her 60-metre time from 9.36 to 9.14 seconds, and whacked 13 seconds off her 800-metre time to finish in 3:12.03.

Tim Jorgensen had four events in the midget boys division, for 14- and 15-year-olds. He ran the fastest 60 metres of his life in 9.25 seconds, and had his best high jump result ever by clearing 1.30 metres.

Ethan Richards was in the youth boys events, which is the 16- and 17-year-old group. He ran the fastest 60 metres of his life in 7.48 seconds, then followed that up with a 24.64 result in the 200 metres for his fastest time ever.

This meet finished off the indoor competition season for Passtrak. The athletes now move into an eight-week intense block of training in preparation for the outdoor competitions, which begin in early May.

Annual non-juried exhibit displays local talent

By Erin Fairhurst Crowsnest Pass Public Art Gallery is displaying its annual non-juried show, No Particular Topic, until March 27.

The exhibit features over 40 works from local and area artists, and Krisztina Wood, managing director of the gallery, says the show is a great platform for both emerging and established artists.

Harry Newrick Harry, 12, was inspired by the iconic Crowsnest Mountain to create his pieces “Snowy Crowsnest Mountain” and “Crowsnest Mountain.”

Lynnette Jessop Local artist Lynnette Jessop uses a medium called “encaustic,” also known as hot-wax painting, to create uniquely textured works. Ola Newrick Ola, a student at Crowsnest Consolidated High School, was pleasantly surprised to learn that her painting “Morrison’s” was one of the first pieces to sell at the exhibit. Ola created both of her pieces at a workshop hosted at the Artist Collective Studio.

Rachel Newrick Emerging artist Rachel Newrick set a goal of completing at least one piece to submit to the No Particular Topic show, and was pleased with the result. “I almost liked it so much that I didn’t want to submit it,” she says of her repurposed rendition of the Burmis Tree, “Rusty Nails Live Again as Burmis.”

Boys and Girls Club of Crowsnest Pass seeks volunteers

By Brad Quarin It’s pretty cool to see the array of programs and activities for children in the Crowsnest Pass Boys and Girls Club.

From improv to growing the community’s vegetables, from meeting politicians to learning about Japanese culture at the Nippon Institute of Technology, the club gives youth a range of opportunities.

Now, with the organization’s annual general meeting coming up, program director Karey Lee Watanabe is encouraging you to become a part of the magic.

“Join a fabulous movement of providing an active, healthy lifestyle for our kids,” she says.

The club needs volunteers who can help with fundraisers, particularly concession booths during events. Occasionally, volunteers are also needed to help run the programs.

The club is also seeking at least one person to join the board of directors. Various kinds of positions are potentially available. Karey explains that we’ll have to wait until the AGM to see what changes are made to the board and which positions need to be filled.

A board member is expected to donate an hour and a half of time for monthly board meetings. Those volunteers involved in club activities may end up contributing 10 hours each month.

Currently, the Boys and Girls Club has eight board members and 15 active volunteers, reports Karey.

Activities, programs and the contributions of this past year’s new staff will be under review at the AGM. And, looking ahead, the new cycling program will be discussed.

The club has 15 mountain bikes thanks to a $12,000 grant from the Community Foundation of Lethbridge and Southwestern Alberta.

The AGM will take place at Crowsnest Community Library on Monday at 7 p.m.

It is with profound sadness and dismay that we announce the sudden passing of Anthony Clive Stephens, who was called to be with our Lord on March 4, 2016, while receiving emergency care at the Chinook Regional Hospital in Lethbridge. Tony was blessed with 71 years of life.

Born on Dec. 19, 1944, in Neath, Wales, to proud parents Dr. John and Nora Stephens, Tony developed an appreciation for family, faith and community. His parents valued education and Tony’s thirst for knowledge and skills was second nature.

He grew into a dashing and energetic young man who captured the heart of a lovely and graceful young lady, Dicko Evelina Lotsberg. They pledged their love in holy matrimony on July 12, 1965, and were further blessed with four children, who were raised with unconditional love. He was dedicated to his family’s well-being and provided for their needs through hard work and devotion.

He will be fondly remembered for his skills as an electronics technician — his ingenuity and method of invention astounded us all.

Tony had many passions, including bicycling, reading, the sciences, astronomy, chess, reading, keeping abreast of current events (especially global warming), caring for his pets, strumming his guitar, swimming, scuba diving, lifeguarding and, most of all, spending precious moments with his family.

As an advocate for social values and one who took a moral stand against substance abuse, he was always someone you could rely upon to help those in need. His devotion to our Saviour and the study of Scripture were foremost in his life and he was truly an inspiration to all who knew him.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 50 years, Evelina Stephens of Pincher Creek; his children, Mark (Eleanor) Stephens of Pincher Creek, Sunday Stephens (Michel) of Calgary, Lyla Stephens of Pincher Creek and Linda (Mike) Siewell of Oregon; his grandchildren, Dylan (Jillian), Mitchell, Naomi, Alana, Montana, Isaac, Laura-Lee, Caleb, Devlin, Chelsea (Logan); his siblings Richard (Sandy) Stephens of Calgary and Vivienne (Fred) Dayley of Idaho; numerous nieces, nephews and extended family, especially Zar Pauls, Daphne Stephens, Dariusz Delon and Joel Jones.

He was predeceased by his father, Dr. John Clive Stephens; his mother, Nora Tonat; his brother Knighton Stephens; his niece Naomi Stephens; his great-nephew Jacob Rich; his father-in-law, Albert Lotsberg; his mother-in-law, Stella Lotsberg; and his sister-in-law Diane Lotsberg.

The funeral service celebrating his life was held on March 12, 2016, at First Baptist Church in Pincher Creek, with Rev. Dr. A. Christopher Smith officiating. Cremation followed at Fantin’s Funeral Chapel’s private crematorium.

Crowsnest Pass Protective Services Weekly Bulletin Submitted by Crowsnest Pass Fire/Rescue Crowsnest Pass Fire/Rescue crews had a busy training weekend.

The weekend could be termed a fire-and-ice weekend. One team was out in British Columbia completing an ice rescue technician course, while a number of other firefighters worked on their NFPA 1051 course. This is a wildfire firefighter course.

This course culminated in a prescribed burn in the Frank Industrial Park, where members learned and practised creating a defensive fire line and offensive fire suppression, and mopping up.

As always, protective services would like to remind members of the community to make sure their address is visible from the street and to refrain from putting garbage out until 7 a.m. on their community’s garbage day.

A further reminder: As of March 1, a fire permit is required for any outdoor fires. This permit can be obtained from the fire department or, if the area is in the Forestry, from the Forestry office.

Pat Watson 1927 – 2016

Pat Watson passed away peacefully at the Pincher Creek Health Centre on Feb. 5, 2016.

Pat will be lovingly remembered by his brothers S.J. Nick (Naida) Watson, A.E. Ted (Laurie) Watson, Dr. R.A. Phil Watson and his sister, Ruth Watson.

He was predeceased by his parents, Hugh and Emily Watson, and his brother R.J. Reg Watson.

A celebration of Pat’s life will be held at a later date.
