Pincher Creek Co-op boosts KidSport

By Brad Quarin In order for young athletes to kick a football, shoot a basketball or handle a hockey stick, parents often have to face their own hurdle — paying sports registration fees.

To help families overcome what can be an enormous obstacle, Pincher Creek Co-op has donated $5,000 to the community’s KidSport group.

“You are definitely the largest corporate donor we’ve ever had,” Diane Burt Stuckey told Jason Babiuk, Co-op general manager.

KidSport can make that money go far, and it is important to understand what the organization has to offer.

Co-op staff saw the value in the group’s work, and decided this would be a great cause to support.

“As far as Co-op models and principles go, community engagement is number one for us,” Jason says.

So, to build up an account, staff at the food store were encouraged to dress casually on Fridays. Any employees who wore jeans had $2 subtracted from their paycheques and placed in this donation account.

Over two years, this has added up to $4,000, with Pincher Creek Co-op pitching in another $1,000 from its advertising budget.

Diane says the Co-op donation is enough to help out 25 children with sports registration fees.

This is KidSport’s main function. Ray Reid, a member of the board of directors for Pincher Creek KidSport, says the funding helps disadvantaged families with sports fees.

The sports activities themselves are provided through other organizations. Coaches for these sports often recognize children who lack the opportunity to play.

They refer these children’s families to the recreation office in Pincher Creek to discuss accessing KidSport.

Low-income or single parents need to provide some paperwork to demonstrate proof of income.

KidSport has also reached out to parents directly, having a table at the Community Spring and Summer Registration and Information Night this month, Ray says.

A few people picked up application forms, although there were still some parents hesitant to ask for assistance.

However, the benefits can be immense to the children.

KidSport believes athletics boosts self-esteem in youth, teaches them life skills and helps them make friends.

Ray adds that children who keep busy with athletics stay out of trouble.

KidSport is a grassroots organization. Pincher Creek’s group is made up of six people, most of whom are parents, grandparents and veterans of organized sports, Ray says. He personally joined Pincher Creek KidSport after being involved in the Lethbridge branch.

While Pincher Creek KidSport helps only with fees for instructed sports, the group is considering expanding to cover some sports equipment.

Last year, the Pincher Creek branch helped 30 children, up from 18 the previous year. This shows demand is increasing, Ray says.

And those 30 children may not represent all local families in need. “We feel we’re just scratching the surface of kids who could benefit,” Diane says.

If more children come forth for assistance from KidSport, Ray believes the group could accommodate them. “That’s what we’re here for,” he says.

Piikani youth explore truth and reconciliation

By Brad Quarin Last year, Canada was rocked by the findings of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, set up to investigate the rampant abuse aboriginal children faced in residential schools.

While the last of the residential schools closed in 1998, last week Piikani youth learned how these issues still affect them and how they can help their community heal.

Piikani Nation Secondary School in Brocket hosted this year’s First Nations Education Council Youth Summit, and opted to make Truth and Reconciliation the topic of the summit.

They welcomed prominent aboriginal author Richard Wagamese to speak. Students and staff from Livingstone Range School Division and the Kainai Board of Education were also in attendance.

The lessons of the day had an impact on the youth. “It was pretty interesting. It showed a different point of the story, not just on residentials,” said Lance Red Young Man, a Grade 12 student of PNSS. He found the whole

experience to be inspirational.

This was Mr. Wagamese’s first time to speak at PNSS, although he has visited the reserve before.

“It’s an important thing for everybody to understand. Not just native students, but Canadians in general, of every stripe, need to really consider what it is we’re talking about when we’re talking about reconciliation,” he said.

He found the students receptive and eager to learn about a subject they may not be very familiar with.

PNSS principal Crystal Good Rider explained why organizers chose this topic for the summit. “You have to know the stories of your grandparents and what they went through so that we never forget the history,” she told the youth. “Someday, it’s going to be up to you to retell these stories.”

Moreover, youth can help survivors by allowing them to talk about it. “It’s our responsibility to listen to those stories,” said superintendent Lisa Crow See TRUTH AND RECONCILIATION, continued on page 4

Ms. Crow Shoe taught much of the history, recounting how residential schools were mandatory for aboriginal children between the ages of four and 16.

The goal was to assimilate Aboriginal Peoples, by teaching religion, domestic skills like cooking and cleaning, and reading, writing and arithmetic.

The Piikani Nation had two residential schools, with St. Cyprian’s Anglican Residential School open from 1899 to 1961. It had an average of 62 students each year.

Sacred Heart Catholic Residential School was open from 1895 to 1961, and had an average of 25 students in each of its 66 years.

Following the guidance of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, Ms. Crow Shoe says the Blackfoot can acknowledge the past, tell their stories, and move on.

Ms. Crow Shoe pointed to the 62nd recommendation of the commission as one that can affect the youth of today and tomorrow.

It asks the federal and provincial governments to provide age-appropriate lessons on residential schools in the kindergarten to Grade 12 curriculum.

Ms. Crow Shoe was followed by Richard Wagamese, who served as the keynote speaker.

Mr. Wagamese is a famous Ojibway writer of fiction and non-fiction, who has won several awards. His novel Indian Horse follows a residential school survivor.

As Mr. Wagamese explained, while he was never in a residential school, he found he had much in common with survivors.

Born in northwest Ontario in 1955, he was taken from his people at 18 months old and kept in foster care until he was 16.

During this time, he said, he experienced physical, mental and sexual abuse.

“The stories of survivors that I’ve heard over the last seven or eight years were almost word-to-word the same as mine,” he told the students.

He said foster care took his innocence, humility, pride and spirituality.

When he ran away and returned to the Ojibway community, elders recognized him as one of the “disappeared ones,” he said.

He still felt like an outsider even with his people, so they invited him to tell his story. After Mr. Wagamese told them about his past, one of the elders informed him that he was meant to be a storyteller.

Mr. Wagamese recounted that he felt anger about the residential schools, particularly towards the churches that ran them.

That faded when he started attending a United church in Vancouver, and felt he could relate to the reverend, who talked about how hard it was to be a good person.

“I realized that we had more in common … than we didn’t have in common,” he said.

There were also lighter moments, with students laughing at Mr. Wagamese imitating the Ojibway language and accent, which he said he initially couldn’t understand.

His presentation drew applause and cheers at the end.

Ms. Good Rider enjoyed the presentation, and believes Mr. Wagamese had an impact on her students. Overall, she believes the students learned a great deal that day and seemed engaged in this very important subject.

In seven days I had opportunities to view excellence in a variety of sporting and cultural events and how the community comes out in support of those involved.

It started at Chinook Lanes in Pincher Creek. The Chinook Open had just wrapped up and a fun last game with a winner-take-all pot was entertaining to watch. The adults cheered one another on as loudly as I remember kids chanting at tournaments of my youth.

Culture came next in the form of the grand concert of the Crowsnest Pass Music Festival. From the opening tunes of the Little Big Band to the final piece of the evening, the audience was drawn into each performance.

It was, indeed, a grand show.

As someone who didn’t make it even a full inch over five feet tall, I am the first to admit I don’t know much about basketball. While taking in three games on Saturday, I certainly learned a tremendous amount.

The adrenaline rush in play at Matthew Halton High School in Pincher Creek, as the Livingstone

Sabres hosted the 1A boys provincial basketball finals, could be felt as soon as one walked in the door.

St. Michael’s School Dragons won their first Saturday game against the Grand Trunk Grizzlies to advance to the consolation final.

The Rosemary Rockets proved to be tough competition, and came out ahead by 23 points.

When all was said and done, Dragons fans gave their team a standing ovation. This was the first time they had earned a provincial berth since 2001.

Between these games, I hightailed it to the arena to watch Pincher Creek figure skaters take audience members around the world with their themed performances.

The audience cheered everyone on — from the youngest who had trouble staying on their feet, to the seniors with dazzling moves.

My busy day ended with the Livingstone School Sabres game against the Daysland Dynamos. The Sabres took an early lead, which they maintained until the game finished. The gym erupted in support

of the boys.

My favourite moment came toward the end of the game. The opposition coaches struck me as tough, and had pushed their team hard. I was surprised to see the young man wearing jersey No. 5 run onto the court in the dying minutes of the game.

Kurt Hochhausen was swimming in his jersey and most of the players towered over him. The Daysland coach encouraged his team to pass to Kurt, and the final basket of the game came from his hands.

Every person in the gym, regardless of team affiliation, cheered for him. That’s what I call good sportsmanship.

Sunday wrapped up with an enjoyable evening of storytelling and fiddling by JJ Guy and Gordon Stobbe at Crowsnest Pass Public Art Gallery.

Congratulations to the performers and athletes on your efforts.

Cheers to the coaches, teachers and parents who support them, and thanks to the many volunteers who make these events possible.

Share a bit of history at the Bunny Bonspiel

By Brad Quarin This weekend, many residents of Crowsnest Pass and neighbouring communities will be sliding rocks in the Bunny Bonspiel, while others can watch from the lounge.

Either way, they will share in something special.

“I think it’s the returning of all the teams, year after year, and welcoming anybody new to be part of the tradition,” says Angela Mathieson, Bunny Bonspiel co-ordinator.

The Bunny Bonspiel, an annual curling tournament held in the Easter season, is one of Alberta’s longest-lived bonspiels, and will celebrate its 70th anniversary in 2017.

The bonspiel will be somewhat smaller this year.

Some regular teams have injuries so either they can’t compete or they are taking a rest before next year’s anniversary.

Forty-eight teams will participate, 16 women’s teams and 32 men’s teams.

Some teams come from afar, places like Calgary, Edmonton, Swift Current and Fernie. People from out of town may be drawn to the event by word of mouth, or perhaps because of the novelty of an Easter bonspiel.

“I think they enjoy the fact that we do put on such a good event,” Angela says.

one feel welcome.

“Even if you’re a team that’s very new and can’t curl very well, it’s always fun, because the people are there to help you,” Angela says.

Another thing organizers do to foster a good time is provide a bus service, thereby preventing drinking and driving.

However, it’s not only the organizers who make the Bunny Bonspiel a hit.

“I think we have wonderful support from the community,” says Angela. The bonspiel typically sees 50 businesses donating prizes for the bonspiel.

The event has had curlers as young as 10 and has regulars who have been with the event for 25 years.

The Bunny Bonspiel goes back further than that.

Originally, when curlers used natural ice rinks that required freezing weather, springtime curling was unheard of.

In 1946, Bellevue became the first town in Crowsnest Pass to have artificial ice. The next year, the town hosted a bonspiel at Easter, attracting 31 curling teams.

Much has changed over the years. With the building of a new arena in Blairmore in 1955, and the fact that Bellevue’s arena was getting old, the Easter Bunny Bonspiel was moved to Blairmore in 1956.

The bonspiel, formerly open to men only, soon

established a women’s event, according to the Crowsnest Curling Club website.

In 1997, the bonspiel was moved again to Crowsnest Sports Complex in Coleman, despite grumblings that the event had long been known as the “Blairmore Bunny.”

In its first year in Coleman, the bonspiel was referred to as the “Cottontail”, but the next year organizers brought back the original name — Bunny Bonspiel.

Over the last four years, organizers have tried to revive a number of bonspiel traditions, like the costume contests, Angela says.

Being new to the community, Angela thought getting involved in the event would help her meet people, so she participated in the bonspiel once and has been the co-ordinator for the last three years.

Next year, for the anniversary celebration, organizers are considering the historical aspects of the bonspiel and may choose an old-fashioned theme, and they may decide on live entertainment.

This year’s Bunny Bonspiel runs from Thursday to Sunday at Crowsnest Sports Complex, with entertainment on Friday night. It is free for spectators to view.

The Bunny Bonspiel dance takes place on Saturday from 9 p.m. to 3 a.m. at the arena, and tickets are $10 at the door.

Rum running returns to the Pass Submitted by Doors Open and Heritage Festival committee Organizers of the Crowsnest Pass Doors Open and Heritage Festival have selected Outlaws of Prohibition as the theme for this year’s event, which will run from July 27 through Aug. 1.

This year marks the 100th anniversary of the enactment of legislation, prohibiting the sale of alcohol in Alberta. Prohibition ran from 1916 to 1924.

The festival theme acknowledges the people who found various ways around the law to bring booze to the Pass and beyond.

Local residents are encouraged to come up with ideas for new events, or to volunteer for existing events. Scheduling is already underway.

Prohibition is a particularly colourful and attractive theme for anyone who loves our local history.

The festival brings many visitors into the Pass, and organizers would like to see some store window displays or staff costumes on the rum-running theme over the festival weekend.

The National Trust of Canada brought the Doors Open concept to Canada in 2002. The idea behind Doors Open is that communities allow public access into buildings that are not normally open.

The Crowsnest Heritage Initiative used this idea to showcase the extensive heritage of the Pass by starting the local Doors Open and Heritage Festival in 2006.

Now in its 11th year, the annual festival is the premiere heritage event in Crowsnest Pass.

Each of its many components is put on by individuals, clubs or other organizations, while the Crowsnest Heritage Initiative handles the overall scheduling, advertising and other support functions.

The FireSmart team has been busy preparing for the fire season. The FireSmart team is responsible for education, prevention and action on wildland-urban interface areas in and around our community.

We would like to remind homeowners and occupants alike that we live in bear country and must keep aware of bears as well as other predators.

We have a very active BearSmart program in Crowsnest Pass. This program is designed to make our community safe for residents and our furry residents alike.

The BearSmart program actively “trains” bears to avoid residential areas by tracking, trapping and relocating bears as well as employing an active sound-deterrent program.

Homeowners and occupants can assist with this

process by following BearSmart suggestions as found on www.cnpbearsmart.com and adhering to our municipal bylaws pertaining to animal attractants in and around their homes.

Municipal Bylaw 9.1 states that no owner or occupant of a premise shall place, store, permit or dispose of animal attractants outdoors in such a manner that they are accessible to wildlife.

Municipal Bylaw 9.2 states that no person shall feed or attempt to feed wildlife, or deposit wildlife attractants in a place or manner that attracts wildlife.

Greetings from Crestview Lodge Submitted by Charmaine Tienkamp February was an easygoing month. It was comforting to have a gentle pace to our activities to gear us up for busier months ahead.

Hockey Jersey Day was fun and we hope our votes counted. We sure had a vibrant assortment of team jerseys, worn in hopeful anticipation of Pincher Creek winning Kraft Hockeyville Canada for our community.

Lots of great pictures were taken and Crestview was abuzz with giggles and smiles.

We tried something new with our men’s club. During a coffee outing we came up with having a poker night.

We had two wonderful guys, Juan Teran and Ryan Falardeau from Aztec Cabinets, to help teach the men how to play. A big thank you to these two gentlemen. Our resident men’s club really enjoyed the evening.

We are hoping to get some games started on a regular basis. We don’t play for money, just for fun. If you are interested in joining in the fun, please give Charmaine a call at Crestview Lodge. We could use more help and more players to heighten the fun.

Our in-house Valentine’s tea and party was so much fun! Huge thanks from all of us to our volunteers who helped out so much. We could not have done it without volunteers Carol Ann Turnbull, Jackie Wiens and Sylvia Barbero.

The left-right game we played left us in stitches, and then we enjoyed hunting around the lodge for kisses. They did not expect they were looking for Hershey’s Kisses!

Gerda Nielsen won the afghan that Connie Robinson made and donated. It was a super day.

Our pub night was fantastic. I think we had a record-breaking number of dancers on the floor this round. Checkmate always plays great songs that get our toes tapping.

Of course we took lots of pictures to prove that we got up and danced our hearts out. What a fun evening it was. Thanks to all our residents that got up and danced the evening away.

Jordan Patrick Gail 1980 – 2016

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the sudden passing of beloved father, husband, son, brother, uncle and friend Jordan Patrick Gail, who left this world all too quickly on Feb. 26, 2016, in Nanaimo, B.C., at the tender age of 35.

Jordan was born in Blairmore on Dec. 22, 1980, to proud parents Siegbert and Rosemary Gail.

From an early age, he demonstrated immense compassion and talents that made him unique and greatly loved. Jordan packed more fun and accomplishments into his few years than most individuals in their lifetime, and his dedication to family, community and his work cannot be overstated.

He received his master’s degree in social work and was employed at the Nanaimo General Hospital. He was also very much into politics and ran for council in Lantzville, B.C., missing out by only 20 votes (the same year his dad ran for council in Crowsnest Pass).

His passions included drumming and composing music in a band, cinema, snowboarding, volunteering his time with the volunteer fire department in Lantzville, politics, reading, gardening, writing as a journalist for his local paper, parachuting, whitewater rafting, motorcycling, crab fishing, and announcing and co-ordinating music at the University of Lethbridge and the University of Calgary.

Jordan married Virginia Fenton in 2007 and they were blessed with three precious daughters. A devoted father, he cherished his girls and shared his many passions with them.

Jordan first and foremost loved the Lord and was an active member of his church. He embraced life and challenged the rules for the betterment of those in need.

Jordan was a fine young man who will be dearly missed and fondly remembered.

Jordan is survived by Virginia Fenton of Nanaimo; his beloved daughters, Catherine, Elizabeth and Georgina; his loving parents, Rosemary and Siegbert Gail of Bellevue; his brother, Robert (Lisa) Gail of Lethbridge; his sister, Carla (Zeshan) Butt of Fort McMurray; his niece, Layla Butt; his nephews, Braden Gail, Nicholas Gail and Elias Butt; and all his extended family, including his canine companion, Remi.

The funeral service was held on March 9, 2016, at Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Church in Blairmore, with Pastor Al Robinson officiating. Interment to follow at the Hillcrest Union Cemetery in the Gail family section.

The memorial service in Nanaimo took place on March 12, 2016, at Costin Hall.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations will be gratefully accepted by the Vancouver Island Multicultural Society, Syrian Refugee Sponsorship Fund (www.cvims.org or 319 Selby St., Nanaimo, BC, V9R 2R4).

Timber Trails 4-H report Submitted by Sarah Yagos District 4-H presentations were held on March 3 at Lundbreck Community Hall and hosted by Timber Trails. We would like to thank Pincher Creek Credit Union and Pincher Creek RBC for generously donating first- and second-place plaques for junior and intermediate 4-Hers.

Enjoy Messiah on Good Friday

By Brad Quarin Members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and anyone interested in the church can enjoy each other’s company and learn about the faith on Good Friday.

The Pincher Creek church will be streaming a live performance of the oratorio Messiah by the Mormon Tabernacle Choir from Salt Lake City.

“It’s an event to welcome more people out of the community up to the church,” says Elder Ellison, a teacher in the Pincher Creek church. “It’s a great thing to see during the Easter season.”

While people in the Pincher Creek area are welcome to go to the church to see the performance, it can also be streamed online at www.lds.org.

Some viewers download the music and record themselves singing along with the live broadcast, Elder Ellison says. You can see this in the stream.

In addition to hosting the stream, elders of the Pincher Creek church will answer questions about their faith and hold discussions with visitors after the broadcast.

Currently, the local church has 140 active members.

Members are not only from Pincher Creek but also the Piikani Nation, Cowley and Lundbreck.

The performance starts at 7 p.m. and is free to view.

Air Cadets is more than rockets and rifles Submitted by Capt. Daniel Desrosiers It’s been a busy period for the air cadets with 859 Crowsnest Squadron.

On Feb. 20, four cadets travelled to Lethbridge to compete as a team in the southern Alberta zone cadet marksmanship competition.

By participating, Sgt. Alyssa Gustavson, Flight Cpl. Jaeger Hann, and Cpls. Matthias Vanderplas and Daniel Poloni all earned bronze marksmanship championship series pins to wear on their uniforms.

Their skills were put to the test with the cadet air rifle, in both the prone (on the ground) and standing positions.

On Feb. 29, the squadron held its annual effective-speaking competition. The air cadet program likes to focus on leadership, self-disci-

pline, self-confidence and good citizenship, and the effective-speaking program incorporates all these things.

Two cadets went on to compete in the southern Alberta zone effective-speaking competition in Calgary on March 12, coming away with bronze effective-speaking competition pins to wear on their uniforms. These were Sgt. Alyssa Gustavson and Cpl. Matthias Vanderplas.

A skills-training day on March 6 continued the cadets’ development.

The day started with some refresher classes on how to use a topographical map and twoway radio communication. It continued with a circumnavigation of Blairmore.

The day concluded with further air-rifle marksmanship and an activity involving the

launching of water rockets.

Weekly training sessions are held on Mondays between 6:30 p.m. and 9:15 p.m. in the Blairmore Elks Hall. In addition to weekly training, 859 Crowsnest Squadron cadets typically train at least one weekend-day per month.

New recruits, between 12 and 18 years of age, are always welcome. There is no cost to join and uniforms are provided free of charge.

Pincher Creek youth have the option of van transportation from the Pincher Creek Legion to the Elks Hall in Blairmore each week.
