Students take the lead in climate change education

John Taylor, off-campus co-ordinator for Livingstone Range School Division, observed the four teens weekly, in their discussions of the school climate leadership project.

Addy, Mariah, Jillanna and Parker participated in weekly teleconferences in February and March, with students from Bonnyville, Edmonton, Calgary and Fort McMurray. This was followed by a virtual town hall with the premier.

With more research, she found this to be an interesting subject.

“This is something we should make people more aware of,” she says. “We decided to start with schools in a small community.”

Parker, a Grade 11 student at MHHS, had some prior interest in climate change. However, when she heard about the project and realized that students have the opportunity to participate in the conversation, she got more involved.

Mariah learned about the project from a teacher, and wanted to participate because she believed schools could adapt in response to climate change.

Addy says she was intrigued by the chance to speak to the premier and make a difference, though she hadn’t thought much before about the link between climate change and schools.

The students started researching what climate change is, discussing the effects of less snow and hotter and colder weather.

Schools could adapt to a changing evironment by setting up solar panels and wind turbines to create energy, Jillanna says.

Living northeast of Pincher Creek, Jillanna says she is familiar with living near wind turbines and doesn’t regard them as annoying.

Moreover, learning about climate change could be part of the school curriculum, Mariah says. Schools can take field trips to learn about the environment.

Addy and Mariah believe that Waterton Lakes National Park would be ideal for its proximity and eco-friendly practices.

Parker can see how lessons about climate change could be incorporated into core subjects in school. It may fit best in science and social classes, as students can explore the politics of the debate and the history of the people who have addressed the issue.

Following the teleconferences, students were challenged to draw their ideal school, either by literally making

a drawing or through a written description. Jillanna, Mariah and Addy chose to draw their ideal school.

Jillanna’s drawing incorporates sinks and lights that turn on automatically, more skylights and composting. Parker helped Jillanna with the drawing, and believes it is important to conserve water and light.

Mariah envisioned solar panels and automatic lighting, while Addy drew a large schoolyard with a garden and wind turbines.

They then helped facilitate a virtual town hall, which involved more students as well as Premier Rachel Notley.

“It’s really such a pleasure to be here today, and to share this morning with you,” Premier Notley told the students during the town hall.

She told the students that climate change would most affect their own children and perhaps grandchildren, which is why it’s important that our youth — and future parents — be consulted.

Pincher Creek student Monica Simpson mentioned the strain on teachers to cover the whole curriculum, and asked how they could fit in something like climate change.

Premier Notley noted that teachers have great strategies already, and that something like this town hall is a good way to get students engaged. Moreover, she recognizes that lessons on climate change could be included in main subjects.

She was impressed with the student input. “I’m so proud of the leadership shown by Alberta’s youth on this issue,” she said.

John Taylor says he believes the virtual town hall went well, and that Pincher Creek students presented themselves favourably.

Local students conveyed some of their feelings when they talked about what they have found on their own farms, including a lack of moisture in the soil, fewer bales in the barns and the fear of a drought.

Students will now wait to see how much impact their work will have on government action. Stay tuned for Jillanna’s experience at the writing workshop.

Book remembers a historic Coleman doctor

SLOW DOWN, continued from page 5 On a multi-lane highway (maximum 110 km/h speed limit), you must slow down, signal and move to the right.

If possible, pull as close as you can to the right side of the roadway and stop when it is safe to do so. Do not move onto the shoulder.

On a two-lane road, you must signal and move to the right. Pull as close as possible to the right edge of the road, clear of any intersection, and stop.

On a one-way street, you must signal and pull to the right or the left side of the street, clear of any intersection, and stop.

If you are at an intersection or approaching from any direction, you must yield to an emergency vehicle until it passes through the intersection.

Never block the intersection. Do not make a left turn if an emergency vehicle is approaching from behind. In this situation, you should proceed straight through the intersection, then pull to the right and stop.

Take lights and sirens seriously. Pull to the right and stop. It’s the law.

Long weekends typically translate into road trips for me, and this past one was no exception.

A round trip of about 2,200 kilometres is what it takes to make a trek home to see my family and lifelong friends.

It’s my good fortune that I enjoy being behind the wheel, as I’ve made the trip from southwestern Alberta to northeastern Saskatchewan many times a year since moving to Pincher Creek.

Travelling solo on this most recent journey, I found myself making lists in my head about things that never fail to happen on my drives.

Meeting RCMP cruisers along the way is a given. Interestingly, this happened five times before I reached Fort Macleod and twice more between Lethbridge and Medicine Hat. I didn’t see another marked vehicle until I was less than two hours from my destination.

Have you noticed that when you reach a passing lane you always seem to catch up to the slower driver ahead of you just as the lane ends? Or does the pokey driver step on it as soon as there are two lanes, only to slow down again once the chance to sneak past safely has merged back into one lane?

I always find myself grumbling about the price of fuel on my road trips. It used to be that I topped my tank to the brim at Dunmore on the way out of the province and ran it close to empty to fill at the same place on the way back. That’s something I no

longer worry about — chances are that gas will be cheaper in Saskatchewan now.

I filled up in Pincher Creek at 93.9 cents per litre. At Dunmore the price had decreased to 87.9. In Swift Current the price was 85.9 and had dropped to 82.4 by the time I reached Saskatoon.

I shake my head and try to make sense of it, but at the same time am glad that prices are much lower now than they have been in years.

Usually I think of something I’ve forgotten by the time I reach Bow Island — too far to turn back and plenty of time to curse myself about it. On this trip I made it to Swift Current before I thought of the special photo left behind on my desk.

A flying stone or projectile always seems to find my vehicle. Last year I replaced my windshield three times. On this trip, I twice heard the sound of rock meeting glass, and both times breathed a sigh of relief that it didn’t make a chip.

There are always interesting factoids to be learned from radio show hosts — that emergency dental visits increase by 67 per cent the day after St. Patrick’s Day festivities and the smell of hand sanitizer can ward off nausea are just a few things I now know.

The trip back will no doubt be filled with more animal sightings, good music and adventures.

Community shows strong support for young athletes at provincials

By Brad Quarin Excitement was high all week at Matthew Halton High School in Pincher Creek, where the provincial championships for boys 1A basketball played out.

On the couple of times that I stopped by, the benches were full and the crowd was exuberant in its support for the Livingstone Sabres and St. Michael’s Dragons. Lundbreck’s Livingstone School hosted the championships.

“We had a good, competitive tournament,” says Duane DeCock, head coach of the Livingstone Sabres.

The Sabres had teeth at the championships, winning gold with a score of 78-62 against Daysland.

Teams felt the heat when contending with the Dragons, who won an important game against Grand Trunk and ended up finishing sixth.

The cheers from spectators were a big help. “It really pumped up the team knowing they had that sup-

port,” says Frank Welsch, head coach for the Dragons.

Duane was confident that his Sabres moved the ball well and had a strong defence. He attributes their victory to preparation. The Sabres had participated in other tournaments with challenging competition.

On some of the teams, players had to play the whole game. The Sabres benefited from being able to rotate their players, says Duane.

There is a bit of hometown advantage as well. Local teams are more familiar with the setting and the fans.

This is the 10th time the Sabres have won the provincial championships since 1964, Duane says.

There were plenty of compliments for the tournament, the breakfast and the banquet, all co-ordinated by Livingstone School. Duane was also pleased with the attendance.

He regards the championship game as the week’s highlight, but also

notes that the Dragons’ victory over Grand Trunk was important to local players.

The Dragons were disappointed when they lost their first game to Daysland, Frank says.

However, they worked hard in their game against Grand Trunk, prevailing to a 79-65 win, and felt good about the result.

The championships were a bit of an eye-opener for the Dragons as they hadn’t been to this level before.

They were also introduced to the fanfare of the ceremonies and banquet.

Frank notes 10 of his 12 players will be returning next year and will try again for the championships.

Players who will be graduating from St. Michael’s School this year are Chet Root and Ryan Higginbotham.

Graduating Sabres include Chris Cail, Ross Cook, Eric Cadonic, Brandon Hilbert and Ethan Paridaen.

Whispers From the Winds Submitted by Sally Marcellus of Whispering Winds Easter has passed and life has been busy with our buffets every month. Great to have our family and friends join us and enjoy these sumptuous buffets!

Entertainment is always enjoyed.

Danika Warkentin, a very lovely and talented young lady, spent an evening with us. The Spring Glen Dancers showed us their wonderful program — such agility.

As well, Mary Resak entertained us last week. We always enjoy Mary; a few residents tried to yodel under her guidance. A good effort!

Our residents recycle and from the proceeds we help with the entertainment. In January, we were also able to send donations to several charities from these proceeds.

Our knitters did likewise.

Our church services are every Tuesday evening at 7 p.m. How we appreciate all of the clergy for their time and commitment. Many of our residents are unable to

go out but because of the goodness of our local ministers, they can still attend services. Many thanks to them.

We are back to our bingos on the last Monday of each month. We usually have players from the community and all have a good time.

If you play bingo, please join us at 1:30 p.m. The entrance fee of $5 helps us with the prizes.

Our first crib tournament last month was a success and now we have another scheduled for April 4.

We start at 11 a.m., then break for lunch and continue on for part of the afternoon. We have a good time and all are welcome to join us. We usually have seven or eight tables.

We look forward to spring and with the lack of snow, our “Snow Angel” has had an easy time.

By Joyce McFarland The calendar says spring is here, but she is not showing off her new colours yet. I notice some of the tulips are jockeying for position.

When you have 10 minutes to spare, please take time with a friend to visit the office of Shootin’ the Breeze (next door to the Legion) and view the 44 pictures on display. They were all taken by area photographers, depicting Winter in Alberta.

The photo contest was held to promote the Crowsnest Pass Wintervention program and was obviously a huge success, judging by the beauty of southern Alberta caught in the camera’s eye.

You will kick yourself if you don’t visit this exhibit before it ends on April 15.

The monthly bingo was held last week so that Good Friday could be honoured as each person saw fit. Virginia was in charge of the bingo and donated two door prizes, won by Maxine Goasdoue and Kim Fukumoto. Virginia herself won the jackpot.

Thanks again to George Fisher, who brings his equipment so that his voice and the numbers are relayed through our big TV. What a boon this is to many of our seniors who have some difficulty seeing and hearing.

As well, many thanks again to the Pincher Creek Co-op for its regular donation of baked goods.

We have enjoyed them at our monthly bingos ever since they started, at least four years ago. The bakery staff delight in making their best choices for us and they are much appreciated by our seniors when we take time for a coffee break after the last bingo is called. This is a real success story.

The board recently called two meetings that were both attended by members. Some problems were discussed but not resolved. Time will give cooler heads a chance to maintain our good judgment. No board can operate well without some red-hot chili peppers in the mix.

We will miss the details of our programs that were available in the calendar of Shootin’ the Breeze.

The board will have to address that in the near future. In the meantime, members can be assured of the regular programs and events through information at the centre.

There will be a meeting for all members on April 7 at 10 a.m. Vice-president Joe LeBlanc will chair the meeting, and your attendance is earnestly requested.

The Friday afternoon bingo will return to its regular slot on April 29 at 1:30 p.m., with Virginia, George Fisher and bakery treats in attendance.

MUSEUM ASSISTANT The Crowsnest Museum is seeking enthusiastic, outgoing and motivated individuals to fill Museum Assistant positions for the 2016 summer season.

Some of the Museum Assistant’s responsibilities include: conducting programs for school/youth groups and visitors of all ages; guided museum and outdoor tours; admissions; administrative and gift shop duties; special events; exhibits and displays; outdoor work; minor janitorial duties; research and a variety of museum/collection related projects.

Previous experience in customer service and/or in areas of tourism/interpretation/ theatre are an asset, but not required as training will be provided. Must be minimum 16 years old and be a current and returning high school or post-secondary student.

These are full-time positions through the summer months at a rate of $12 per hour.
