My Little Corner How many times have you volunteered in the past year? If you stop to think about it, the number may surprise you.

No act of kindness or volunteerism is too small and, certainly, no act is too big.

It’s fantastic that the Town and MD of Pincher Creek and the Municipality of Crowsnest Pass make a point of honouring local volunteers each year.

It’s a reminder that every minute of time given, every compassionate thought offered, all knowledge imparted, any skill taught, any talent shared and all energy expended has an impact. Often that impact is larger than one would imagine.

If you’ve been on the receiving end of volunteer efforts or kindness, this week is the perfect time to say thank you.

Say it out loud, share it on our Facebook page or Twitter feed and, while you’re at it, be sure to give yourself a pat on the back for your own volunteer efforts.

Also to the Nanaimo paramedics and RCMP for being with Jordan in the last minutes of his life. We especially extend our appreciation to Jord’s beloved friends Jeff Chambers, Jon Saucier, Jay Sharp, Ryan Hogarth and Ian Spatuk (with the help from George Hoff) for the amazing craftsmanship of the casket they made. It was exactly what Jord would have wanted — plain and simple, nothing fancy, with a place to sign and leave a message. Well done, guys. A big thank you to Pastor Al Robinson for officiating; Darrell and staff at Fantin’s Funeral Chapel for your compassion, professionalism and support; Shannon Burton and Jeff Chambers for the music, as well as Jord’s uncle Walter for the trumpet solo; also to the members of the Crowsnest Christian Centre for the luncheon. This difficult time was made just a bit easier with the support of our family and friends and the outpouring of love from this community. Most important is to thank our Lord and Saviour for the wonderful 35 years he gave us Jordan.

ALBERTA PROVINCIAL POLICE, continued from page 10 In addition to the shooting of Const. Lawson, there is another reason why Crowsnest Pass should be central to APP remembrance.

The Bellevue Restaurant was the scene of a fatal shootout between train robbers and the APP in 1920, which Fred says was the deadliest police incident in Canada.

The building still stands on Main Street in Bellevue. The Heritage Inventory Project identified it as a candidate for municipal heritage designation, and the Coleman barracks exhibit will tell that story as well.

Restoring the barracks has been an immense undertaking, as contractors and local volunteers are working on a very historic building.

It was built by the International Coke and Coal Company and served as the barracks for the Royal Northwest Mounted Police from 1904 to 1917.

In 1917, it was turned over to the APP, who were based there until 1923.

Besides being a workplace, the barracks was a home, with the Lawson family taking up residence in 1922.

Given the layered walls, Fred expects that the jail cells were also in this building.

The Crowsnest Historical Society acquired the building in 2001, and it was marked as an Alberta Provincial Historic Resource the next year.

While it has degraded badly over time, improvements are already visible to passersby.

In 2009, the building was moved four feet onto a new foundation, to create more distance between it and an adjacent private residence. It is now slightly closer to the Coleman Seniors Centre, right next door.

A new roof was placed on the building in 2012. “Ian [McKenzie] and I didn’t have to come up there with tarps anymore,” Chris Matthews said. Work was also done on its three chimneys.

The aim of the restoration project is to complete the exterior restoration this spring and summer.

Fred says the building needs new siding and the old windows and doors should be replaced. That work will be done by a combination of contractors and volunteers.

Renovation of the interior will be next.

In its later years, the building became a residence and windows and stoves were added, Chris says. The museum wants to turn it back to its original layout and atmosphere, and Fred hopes to have this completed by spring 2017.

Meanwhile, the Legends of Prohibition exhibit is being designed by Westwind Design. It will likely include police uniforms and original papers from the trials of Picariello and Florence Lassandro, explains Fred.

Altogether, the restoration of the building and the launch of the exhibit is estimated to cost $760,000.

The Crowsnest Historical Society has already raised $210,000. This is thanks to grants from the Canada 150 Community Infrastructure Program, the Alberta Historical Resources Foundation, Museums Alberta and the Crowsnest Heritage Initiative.

There are some important anniversaries approaching, which the society may use for fundraisers or to create awareness of the project, Fred says.

The 100th anniversary of the onset of Prohibition in Alberta is July 1, 2016.

March 1, 2017, will mark 100 years since the founding of the APP. It is hoped that Legends of Prohibition will open on Canada Day, 2017. If funding isn’t in place by then, the exhibit gallery may be finished in phases.

Students enjoy rousing hoedown

By Brad Quarin It was a good old-fashioned “monkey-flinging” hoedown at Horace Allen School as children clapped and danced to the fiddling of travelling musicians JJ Guy and Gordon Stobbe.

“It was an excellent audience. This is a great school,” Gordon says. “Kids like music, and they like to participate, so our show is completely about participation.”

Gordon explains that he and JJ are touring through Alberta and British Columbia, and were invited to Crowsnest Pass by friend Paul Pichurski, who is the principal of Isabelle Sellon School.

JJ is from Saskatchewan while Gordon is from Nova Scotia.

Before arriving at HAS in Coleman, the two performed in a concert at Crowsnest Pass Public Art Gallery, which was sold out, and they held a workshop at ISS. Twenty people attended the workshop. Some were trying to improve their fiddling, learning from the instructors as well as from each other. Others were just starting out, learning the rudiments and hoping for some direction.

Daffodil Days funds go to cancer research and support programs for cancer patients. Bouquets sold for $6 each, while anyone could chip in change for a pin. The sale was held earlier this month at Ranchland Mall in Pincher Creek.

The Pincher Cowley Roaring Lions stepped up to sell the daffodils around five years ago, when the previous organization co-ordinating the local effort could no longer participate.

It’s been a success in Pincher Creek, usually always selling out, says co-ordinator Peggy Dase. The club brings in five cases, each containing 50 bouquets. She considers this year another good run.

Student gala inspires change

By Brad Quarin Adding a little soul to your life could go hand-in-hand with delivering practical assistance to families struggling with poverty.

By attending Matthew Halton High School’s art auction and purchasing a student’s art piece, you could reach both objectives.

“There’s quite a variety of pieces,” says Megan McGlynn, a member of Students Inspiring Change, an MHHS club interested in international issues.

The Goat Gala will offer paintings, sculptures and other works by the club. Eight of the 12 members are contributing.

A few girls are fashioning bracelets for the gala, while Megan paints real cattle skulls. Other students are keeping their creations a surprise.

Money raised from the sale of these art pieces will go to support families in a developing nation through the purchase of goats, a Me to We project.

Goats are a “great resource for people to have,” Megan says.

They provide nutritious milk and serve in

income generation. The milk can be used and the surplus sold in a local market. Goats born may be kept to increase the herd or sold as income. And it doesn’t cost much to feed a goat.

According to the Free the Children’s website, a goat costs $50.

Previously, the club raised funds for “the goat project” through bake sales and donations from teachers, Megan says. Up to this point in the school year, they have raised $600.

“We needed something that was a little bit bigger,” she says. There are plenty of artistic students in the club, and they’ve received excellent guidance from art teacher Laura Pearce.

The students hope to raise $1,000 from the art auction.

The Goat Gala will run at MHHS at 6 p.m. next Tuesday.

Throughout the province, traffic injuries are the leading cause of death and a leading cause of hospitalization to children younger than 14.

Motorists are urged to use caution when driving through residential areas and to adhere to speed limits in school or playground zones.

To keep children safe, motorists should: — Scan farther down the road and obey posted speed limits.

Always be prepared to slow down or stop.

— Use caution when approaching intersections or mid-block crosswalks. Parked or stopped vehicles may hide a pedestrian who is crossing the road.

— Watch for the school safety patrol in their orange vests and stop as directed. Patrollers play a vital role in directing children safely across the street.

— Be very cautious in parking lots or when backing out of a parking stall or driveway.

— Watch for kids between parked vehicles and on the sidewalk.

They may dash out into the street after a friend or a toy.

The speed limit in a school zone is 30 kilometres per hour unless otherwise posted and is in effect on school days from 8 a.m. to 9:30 a.m., 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., and 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. unless other times are posted.

The speed limit in a playground zone is 30 km/h unless otherwise posted and is in effect from 8:30 a.m. to one hour after sunset.

A vehicle is not permitted to pass another vehicle travelling in the same direction in either school or playground zones during the times that these zones are in effect.

Crowsnest group raising funds for refugee sponsorship Submitted by Crowsnest Friends of New Canadians Crowsnest Pass has a long history of welcoming immigrants to our community, whether Italian, Polish, Ukrainian or other ethnicities.

These families were fundamental in the creation of who we are today.

More recent immigrants from the Middle East, India, China, Mexico and Africa have opened successful businesses, and become well-­ respected residents of our community.

Inspired by the horrific tragedy that is unfolding in Syria, a group of over 70 local residents have started a project called Crowsnest Friends of New Canadians, with the goal of sponsoring one or two Syrian families to move to our community. ​International aid agencies suggest that the Syrian conflict is the worst humanitarian crisis since the Second World War. The UN estimates over 250,000 people have been killed in the conflict, with 4.8 million refugees fleeing and living in temporary housing throughout surrounding countries. At the same time, 6.6 million others are displaced within

Syria.​ “About half of these refugees are children,” says Kat Williams, one of the group’s organizers. “They didn’t choose that life or to be displaced in the war; we can’t not help get them out of there.”

Crowsnest Friends of New Canadians has partnered with the Grace Anglican United Church to move the process forward.

The church has the ability to sponsor refugees through national agreements held by the Anglican Church of Canada, which will help make the application go smoothly.

The group will also handle fundraising, and help the family integrate into the community when they arrive.

“We are seeing stories from across Canada of families working hard to integrate into our culture, but they need help. Many of these people have been in camps for four or more years. Many of the children have never known anything but the inside of a refugee camp,” says Kat. The group founders are financially responsible for supporting the family for one year,

One Friday afternoon a few weeks ago, I was out walking with our daughter along one of the grid roads. It felt like a spring day, being fairly warm and significantly windy.

It was during the time that our yard and the nearby roads were covered by ice thick enough for skating, if it had been smoother. So, I was wearing cleats with one-inch claws, and had fabulous traction!

We’d gone a mile or so out against the wind, and had turned around to head home. I was pushing the chariot and keeping up a good pace.

It’s easy to get lost in your own thoughts when it’s just you and the road, but I was quickly snapped out of my reverie by a tawny critter on the rise ahead of us.

A rich golden tan colour flashed amid the ice and taupes of the aspen forest. At least a hundred metres ahead of us, on a small rise, it looked to be a deer crossing the road.

I paused to watch. Then caught my breath as it turned sideways and I saw the unmistakably long tail of a cougar.

It didn’t move.

I thought, “Make yourself as big as possible.”

Then I turned the chariot perpendicular to the road and hoped our daughter wouldn’t make any noise quite yet.

I then decided to be even more intimidating and roared as loud as I could.

I’m not recommending this as a defence against cougars. I’m definitely not a cougar expert. Really, this was my first experience on my own and I would highly recommend avoiding cougars as much as possible.

From what I can gather, they are interested in avoiding people most of the time, so hopefully any contact or conflict can be deflected.

Lucky Day

On the road, in that moment, all I could think was that I had a little girl to protect and I wanted to be as intimidating as possible.

The cougar needed to see I was big and know I was loud and angry and that it was in for a fight if it decided to come our way.

So I roared again.

Then I laughed, as much in shock as delight, when the cougar turned and bounded up the road, away from me, and then into the bush. Big ol’ scaredy cat!

Except … the bush the cougar bounded into was on my way home and I had no way of knowing if it was hiding and waiting to drop down from a tree.

I debated the merits of walking another half mile to the neighbours (who were at work), or staying where I was until my husband came by on his way home from work (within the next half hour).

Our daughter, however, had other ideas and wanted to keep moving.

She was starting to verbally tell me so, and as the cougar was downwind, I worried that he might return when he heard her, mistaking her for a young animal in trouble instead of a human.

I had left the bear spray at home, thinking I wouldn’t be able to use it in the wind. So I removed a cleat, strapped it onto my hand over my mitten, and slowly started walking home, making noise as we went.

We had just reached the spot where the cougar had been when my husband drove up.

After looking at the tracks, we figure the cougar was two or three years old. It had done one magnificent leap off the road after I roared; we couldn’t even see where it landed in the dog-hair aspen stand.

My roar must have been so frightening that the cougar magically disappeared — my lucky day!

NCC celebrates 10 years of volunteerism Submitted by Nature Conservancy of Canada It takes a lot of teamwork to care for Canada’s special places, and this year, the Nature Conservancy of Canada’s conservation volunteers program is celebrating 10 years of people-powered conservation.

NCC’s conservation volunteer program is unique in that it invites Canadians of all ages to participate in the protection of our country’s species and natural habitats.

From site cleanups to tree planting, volunteers get directly involved in local projects that help improve the health of the environment. It’s a chance to get outside, get their hands dirty, and learn more about nature.

Since NCC launched the CV program in Alberta in 2006, 3,125 dedicated volunteers have donated 21,679 hours of hands-on conservation efforts and helped complete 272 projects on the ground.

Last year alone, the program drew a record-breaking 783 volunteers — families, solo adventurers and local community members who are passionate about caring for Alberta’s wild spaces.

In celebration of National Volunteer Week, NCC launched its 2016 calendar of volunteer events on April 11.

These one-day events take place all across the province, but include this one, right in your own backyard: What: A Ribbiting Evening When: May 27, 6:30 p.m. to 11:30 p.m.

Pincher Creek greens open for another season

By Brad Quarin Golfers of Pincher Creek were back on the greens at the beginning of April, already swinging the morning of opening day.

The Pincher Creek Golf Club was ready for them, starting off the year with a new executive and improvements to the course.

The new greenskeeper, Brian Murray, helped with signage and fencing repairs, says president Gord McMullen.

The clubhouse is now being run by Crystal Plummer.

The club hopes for a successful season and certainly has a good start with perfect weather and a well-cared-for course.

Seedy Saturday in the Pass

By Brad Quarin The Crowsnest Pass Gardening Club joined other gardening groups across North America for Seedy Saturday last month.

The event is an annual seed swap, allowing anyone to trade seeds.

Some of the more interesting seeds available this year were the parsnip seeds. Club chairwoman Lorraine Halton was impressed that someone would actually harvest their own seeds.

A total of 12 people participated in the swap.

Pitch in for Pincher Creek

By Brad Quarin Pincher Creek citizens can help tidy up the community during Pitch-In Week, which starts Sunday.

The town’s recreation office sent out letters and flyers to different groups and schools, letting them know about the campaign, says office administrator Rhonda Oczkowski.

The town is also spreading the word through Facebook and is reporting back to the national organization, Pitch-In Canada, about local participation.

The idea is to clean up the town, picking up litter and tidying up in any other way such as trimming grass.

A clean sweep is an intensive cleanup, while another option for participants is the 20-minute makeover, taking a small amount

of time in the day to tidy up.

The town is providing garbage bags and gloves.

Creek shores need attention, but so do alleys, the industrial area, parks and walking paths — anyplace the wind may have placed garbage.

The Pincher Creek Girl Guides are already on board, and have selected an area to look after. The town has reached out to other youth organizations to do the same, Rhonda says.

Many residents are good about keeping their neighbourhoods clean, and Rhonda hopes the whole community will support the campaign.

Although the last day of Pitch-In Week is April 23, efforts to clean up Pincher Creek may continue for the rest of the month.
