Volunteers build free libraries and community ties

By Erin Fairhurst Spring is in the air, and just as spring flowers are popping up out of the ground, residents of Crowsnest Pass will start noticing a series of free libraries popping up around the community.

The project was launched towards the end of 2015. Volunteers throughout the community have been hard at work raising money and planning for approximately 30 free libraries to be constructed and distributed throughout Crowsnest Pass this spring.

Coleman resident Sarah Thomsen spearheaded the project with the aim of promoting literacy but also with a goal of building strong community ties through an open book exchange.

“The idea of bringing people together to do something for our community really appealed to me,” Sarah explains. “There’s so much creativity and energy when people get together to do something positive.”

Sarah goes on to say that she was inspired by the group, Crowsnest Pass Creative Minds, to bring people together in the

communal goal of building and distributing the free libraries.

This group was founded by Nichole Yanota through the Artist Collective Studio.

“People working together and collaborating and sharing ideas is such a beautiful thing.”

The cost of each library is approximately $100, and while Sarah was happy to manage the project from a logistical standpoint, she turned the construction aspect over to fellow volunteer Ian Crawford.

“Ian put together a great design for the library structure and was very hands-on,” Sarah says. “There’s going to be a learning curve involved in constructing the structures, but we’re all in it together.”

Local businesses and groups, such as the Municipality of Crowsnest Pass, Crowsnest Pass Adult Literacy, Crowsnest Pass Property Management, CNP40, Border Building Materials, Country Encounters, Homechek CNP, Pass Herald, and Mountain Ink all contributed towards making the project a success.

That made her happy simply to be there.

Alexandra attributes the strong showing for the local club to the number of communication-oriented events promoted by Pincher Creek’s 4-H district and to the encouragement of local parents.

While she didn’t place in provincials this time around, she says she is inspired to try again next year.

My Little Corner With the exception of a few miserable days, it seems winter bypassed much of southwestern Alberta. I’ve lived here almost seven years now, and no two have been alike with regard to the weather.

The seasons come and go and I have yet to determine what is “normal.”

We’re all connected to the weather. Some love frosty days on the ski hill while others prefer hot days fishing on the river.

I prefer the temperatures, colours and textures of spring and fall best myself.

The past week has brought spring into full bloom with a bit of rain and warm sunshine. Birds are singing, bees are buzzing and the landscape is greening up with highlights of early flowers.

I find that I don’t realize how much I miss the sun until it comes back. I often eat lunch outside now just to soak up a bit of the heat and happy energy.

It seems fitting that Earth Month (April) is a time of change, renewal and growth.

Earth Day Canada hopes people across the country will get on board and join in a crusade to plant trees. You can learn more in the article on page 6.

During a windstorm this winter I lost the tree in my front yard. It was a frightening surprise that left me — and my neighbour — sleepless for a few nights while waiting for the portion of the tree that hadn’t come down in the wind to be cut to the ground.

It was a huge old tree and was the only one in my yard. As I sit on the deck to enjoy the warm weather, I wish it was still there to offer shelter, shade, a haven for birds and the comforting sounds of home as the wind blows gently through the boughs at night.

The idea of planting trees is one that brings with it thoughts of rejuvenation and hope. Trees require nurturing and care to grow. They offer much in return, regardless of the season.

It’s a simple plan and a strong investment in the future. There are also some great incentives available at www.earthday.ca.

When you’re hiking in the backcountry, enjoying freshly caught rainbow trout, skiing a black-diamond run, rock climbing in the mountains, exploring caves, photographing wildlife or savouring a margarita on your deck, remember how lucky we are to live in such beautiful space. #Rooting4Trees

Keeping it green for Earth Day

By Shannon Robison Care of the environment is something that concerns each one of us. Earth Day, observed annually on April 22, is a perfect day to think more about ways to look after the world we share.

While environmental issues seem to gain more attention each year, it’s interesting to note that the first observance of Earth Day was in 1970 in the United States.

Predictions at the time were dire, including beliefs that 75 to 80 per cent of animal species would be extinct within 25 years and that due to cooling trends, an ice age was possible by the year 2000.

Earth Day Canada, an environmental charity, is celebrating its 25th anniversary with a commitment to plant 25,000 trees in 2016. Canadians are encouraged to plant or pledge a tree to help grow the global forest and to use the hashtag #Rooting4Trees on social media to help promote awareness.

A wealth of information can be found online at www.earthday.ca and you can make a donation toward the organization’s tree project. They hope to have

25,000 trees purchased by the end of April.

There will be special events to watch for on National Tree Day in September as well.

The Earth Day Network has a lofty goal to plant 7.8 billion trees — one for each person on earth — by the movement’s 50th anniversary in 2020.

Earth Day Canada’s goal is to contribute 35 million trees — one per person in the country — to the global effort.

Trees were chosen as the organization’s focus because they help combat climate change, help us breathe clean air and help communities.

Most people are conscious of their impact on the environment. We see more recycling, reducing and reusing all around us.

Many simple activities can reduce your carbon footprint. At www.eded.ca you can see suggestions and track the positive impact you are making on the environment.

While Earth Day will pass this week, being mindful of the environment is something we can do all year long.

Quitting smoking ties in with Relay for Life

By Brad Quarin A new dimension has been added to this year’s Relay for Life in Pincher Creek and is intended to help you quit smoking. You might even win a new car.

Smokers have until Saturday to register for Run to Quit, a program supported by the Canadian Cancer Society and the sports store Running Room.

“I think this is a fantastic thing, and we should all jump on board,” says Aubrey Lanz, revenue development co-ordinator for the Canadian Cancer Society in Alberta and Northwest Territories.

This year’s Relay for Life will be held on June 25 at Pincher Creek’s agricultural grounds. As usual, each team raises funds for the society before the relay.

In the meantime, newcomers to the relay who want to kick their smoking habits can begin to work on their own Run to Quit.

“By the time the relay comes, you’ll have a whole new you to present,” Aubrey says.

The idea of Run to Quit is that running and exercise help decrease cravings and withdrawal symptoms, and promote a healthier lifestyle.

A pilot project in Ontario found runners were seven times likelier to stay away from tobacco than those who tried to quit without running, Aubrey says.

She credits colleague Kristyn Berry for coming up with the idea to combine Run to Quit with the relay, seeing them as an ideal fit.

The Relay for Life serves as a qualifying event for Commit to Quit, a five-kilometre walk or run to be undertaken by July 31 and part of the Run to Quit program.

Participants across Canada have a chance to win a vehicle or cash prize in Commit to Quit. The Canadian Cancer Society saw a free vehicle as a great way to motivate people, Aubrey says.

Communication with agencies such as Pincher Creek Emergency Services, Fish and Wildlife and Parks Canada is essential. He also receives requests for things like increased traffic enforcement or educational programs at the schools.

So far, he finds Pincher Creek to be “a pro-police community.”

“People seem to be generally open and friendly when I introduce myself,” he says.

As an officer, the safety tip Sgt. Harrison wishes to share with readers is to never text while driving.

Despite distracted-driving laws, he doesn’t see a decline in related accidents.

“It is leading to fatal collisions and injury collisions,” he says. “People need to put their phones down.”

CROWSNEST PASS APPROVED FOR NEW SENIORS LODGE The Board and Management of Crowsnest Pass Senior Housing are pleased and excited to inform the community that Crowsnest Pass has been approved for a new 61-bed seniors lodge Funding for this project has been provided by both the Provincial and Federal Government and is now offically approved. The new building will be the government’s first seniors lodge in Alberta to be built following a LEED design. LEED refers to Leadership in Energy and Efficiency Design, which means it will be as eco-friendly as possible, preserving not only the landscape but also the picturesque views this community provides. This is very exciting as we are all aware how important it is to protect our environment. The projected completion date of the new building is December 2017. Updates will be provided by the Crowsnest Pass Senior Housing Board during the various stages of the project so the community remains informed of the progress being made.

Big screen is a new feature at Kananaskis Pro Rodeo this weekend

By Brad Quarin Spectators looking for some action can mosey on up to Crowsnest Sports Complex this weekend to watch the Kananaskis Pro Rodeo — and if something’s really good, they can rewatch it.

The Kananaskis Rodeo Association has secured a big screen for replays for its 34th annual rodeo.

“There’s so much good action, and sometimes you miss it the first time. So you get to watch it another time, possibly in slow motion,” says KRA president Joe Trotz.

“It brings our rodeo to another level. It’s kind of like being at the Calgary Stampede.”

Big screens are expensive and the KRA had to rent this one from Lethbridge.

Members of the KRA, visiting smaller rodeos around southern Alberta, noticed they have big-screen replays, and thought it would be a good addition to Coleman’s event, Joe says.

The screen will also be used to showcase sponsors and keep track of rodeo scores and times.

The screen measures 10 by 16 feet, so the KRA is facing somewhat of “a juggling act” fitting it into the arena.

This is just one more perk for the Kananaskis Pro Rodeo, which already boasts top-quality stock with all seating close to the action.

It will also welcome great local talent, including steer wrestlers Cole Rutledge and Cooper Trotz.

Cowley’s Lyle Hewitt will be back for more team roping, and Kyle Thomson will compete in saddle bronc and steer wrestling.

Dustin Flundra, the Twin Butte rancher who placed first in saddle bronc in the 2014 Calgary Stampede, will also be participating.

Volunteers are charged with setting up for the event, bringing in dirt, chutes and bleachers.

Most of the volunteers are members of the 85-strong Kananaskis Rodeo Association and are mainly from Crowsnest Pass.

Some members have never been active in rodeo, but see it as a beneficial community project, Joe says. The association also includes a number of young members.

The rodeo gets a hand from the Coleman and Blairmore Lions, the Masons, the Pass Piranhas and Crowsnest Pass Fire/ Rescue.

Other groups will benefit from the rodeo. Sunday is Tough Enough to Wear Pink Day, in which merchandise sales and 50-50 draws will support breast cancer charities.

The 50-50s held on other days will support the Heart and Stroke Foundation and the Alzheimer Society, Joe says.

The Kananaskis Pro Rodeo runs Friday at 7 p.m., Saturday at 6 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m. The junior and senior rodeo will be held Saturday at 10 a.m.

Tickets cost $15 per adult, $10 for seniors and children between five and 14, and are free for ages five and under.

For those who want to dance, the Coleman Legion will host its annual event on Friday at 10 p.m.

The KRA cabaret takes place Saturday, featuring Quinton Blair and the Bronc Stompers. Doors open at 8 p.m. at the Coleman Sports Complex. Tickets are $20 at the door. 3” wide version

Submitted by Morgan Little Mustache Piikani Nation hockey players finished the season by coming together as a nation to participate in two well-known First Nation hockey championships.

Each team is well prepared in advance to bring what it takes to these tournaments.

Each player showed strength, endurance, determination, teamwork and, most of all, optimism. Each player also gained a sense of belonging and Piikani identity.

This year we were blessed with jerseys for each division. Seeing our Piikani Nation colours on the ice brought a true feeling of pride.

Piikani Nation minor hockey teams attended the 2016 Alberta Treaty Hockey Championships in Cochrane in late March. One hundred and 24 teams participated from the pre-novice division to the junior B division.

Players also attended the 2016 Alberta Native Provincial Championships in Edmonton in early April.

This tournament truly showed the commitment and integrity of our nation’s players, especially for coming together once a year.

Once our players stepped onto the ice as a First Nation team, we saw the Piikani pride and teamwork that led our teams to success. Managers and coaching staff worked hard organizing teams, fundraising and

The community reps for the Alberta Treaty Hockey Association and the Alberta Native Provincial Championships have a big part in getting our Piikani teams entered and, most of all, the community reps made sure Piikani Nation was well represented.

By Brad Quarin To a dementia patient who is feeling a bit agitated, a lap quilt can provide some comfort.

Diane Nummi, unit manager for long-term care at the Crowsnest Pass Health Centre, explains that lap quilts feature buttons, zippers and different textures.

These keep a patient’s hands busy, stimulate the senses and help to reduce restlessness.

At Diane’s request, the local Rag Bags quilters group made 14 lap quilts for continuing

care.

“I have a very soft spot for long-term care,” says quilter Heather Kennedy.

“When Diane asked, I couldn’t resist going to our club and our group and asking if they would be willing to take on this project. So we did, and had a lot of fun doing it.”

The entire group of between 12 and 15 quilters worked on the lap quilts. The work was completed over the fall and winter.

Open Farm Days invites farmers to share lifestyle

By Brad Quarin Every farm has its own story. In August, urbanites can learn some of these sagas and discover the agricultural experience with Open Farm Days, to be held throughout Alberta.

Farmers and ranchers have until May 31 to apply to be part of the two-day event, which could serve as an opportunity to expand their markets.

“Open Farm Days gives visitors from across the province and beyond a chance to experience the sights, sounds and tastes of rural Alberta,” says Ricardo Miranda, Minister of Culture and Tourism.

“I encourage farmers and ranchers to take this tremendous opportunity to showcase their operations while helping to take advantage of a growing

consumer interest in ag-tourism.”

Opening your gates for free allows guests to discover what you have to offer.

Suggested activities for these guests include meeting their rural neighbours, seeing the animals, watching demonstrations of daily chores and tasting some of the food made at the farm.

Last year, 10,000 visits were made to 72 participating farms and 18 culinary events, and $100,000 worth of goods were purchased.

This year, Open Farm Days runs on Aug. 20 and 21. To register to be a farm host, go to www.albertafarmdays.ca.

Other news at the AGM may not be as exciting to the children, though they are the ultimate beneficiaries.

The Crowsnest Pass branch has allied with the Foothills Boys and Girls Club, based in Black Diamond. The Black Diamond group will assist Crowsnest Pass with administration and staff work.

The Crowsnest Pass group is also now fully audited, making more grants accessible, Scott says.

These grants could help the club obtain a new bus. The current one, built in 1994, is aged and maintenance and operating costs are becoming burdensome.

Getting a new bus is more important than acquiring a new clubhouse, he says. The club has been using Pete’s Park in the summer and Isabelle Sellon School for the rest of the year.

Financially, Scott feels the club is in a good position. Last year, the club raised $13,000 through seven events.

The next fundraiser will be a casino on April 26 and 27. Anyone interested in helping out with that can contact John Warlow at Bamboo Bistro.

In the meantime, program director Karey Lee Watanabe and her excellent staff are busy planning another exciting summer of programs.

Dorothy W. Kettles, beloved wife of the late Ernest Kettles, passed away peacefully on April 8, 2016, at the age of 95, in Pincher Creek.

Dorothy will be lovingly remembered by her son Rodney (Elaine) and their sons, Nate and Rylan; granddaughter Stacey Kettles and her sons, Tye and Maxum; grandson Kyle (Tania) Kettles and their sons, Ryan and Justin. She is also survived by her daughter-in-law Lorraine (Wayne) Sorge and sister-in-law Gertrude Kettles, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Besides her loving husband, Ernest, Dorothy was predeceased by daughter Doreen, son Norman and her parents. She was also predeceased by her siblings and their spouses: Mary and Bill Bagg, Lillian and Albert King, Bill and Norma Bird, Annie and Clarence Lynch.

Dorothy was born in the Robert Kerr district south of Pincher Creek on Jan. 13, 1921, to Gertrude and Reginald Bird, the fourth of five children. Dorothy was raised and helped on the farm with her siblings. She attended the Robert Kerr and Crook one-room schools. During the Second World War, Dorothy worked in Calgary and then back in Pincher Creek.

Dorothy married Ernest Kettles on July 13, 1946. They lived and worked the Kettles farm east of Pincher Creek until Ernest’s passing. In 2007, Dorothy moved into Vista Village in Pincher Creek, where she resided until her passing.

Dot and Ernie enjoyed their life on the farm. Many an evening was spent around the kitchen table with family, neighbours and friends, playing bridge and other card games.

They also enjoyed bowling, golfing, travel, and a late night or two spent visiting and dancing at the Pincher Creek Legion.

A funeral service was held at Pincher Creek United Church on April 15, 2016, with Rev. Eras Van Zyl officiating.

Interment followed at Fairview Cemetery.

Memorial donations in Dorothy’s name may be made directly to the Good Samaritan Society, PO Box 1510, Pincher Creek, AB, T0K 1W0.

Gerald B. Toews was born on Jan. 18, 1942, to Paul and Agnes Baerg Toews in Acme, Alta. He departed his life on April 7, 2016, at the age of 74, at Pincher Creek, due to a short battle with lung cancer.

He passed away peacefully at Vista Village in palliative care.

Dad gave his heart to Jesus as a young teenager, and served his Saviour till the end of his life. The last couple of weeks, he looked forward to seeing Jesus in heaven. He especially encouraged his grandchildren to serve the Lord, go to church, remember to keep Sunday holy, and sing from the heart. He told us to stay courageous — hard times will come. We will hold these encouragements dear to our hearts forever.

Dad married our mother, Audrey, on Aug. 21, 1964, at Linden, Alta., and they were married for just over 50 years. They moved to Heart Valley, Alta., on their son’s first birthday, July 7, 1966. In the spring of 1976 they moved to Pincher Creek with their five children. Dad’s heart never left the north country and he talked of it often.

Work ethics were important and taught. Raising chickens was a family project. Dad worked in construction and enjoyed hunting with his son, Laverne.

Dad knew no stranger. He kept us as children and many visitors entertained with his many experiences of travel, hunting and keeping life simple.

Dad’s love for singing will be remembered by all. Many hours were spent singing with his brothers, then his children, and later in life with our mom. We often sang on Saturday evening. He shared this freely with many people he met; it was a gift from God. Those left with many memories are: His wife, Audrey; son Laverne of Pincher Creek; four daughters, Lora and Brian Thiessen of Bow Island, Alta., Dawn and Ted Nikkel of Pincher Creek, Carlene and Chad Yost of Greybull, Wyo., Luetta and Marc Nikkel of Pipestone, Minn.; 18 precious grandchildren; one great-grandson; and special friends Anna and Wes Ensz.

His mother and our granny, Agnes Toews of Linden, Alta.; four brothers, Gilbert and Phyllis Toews, Veral Toews, Burt and Sue Toews, Darcy and Shirley Toews; four sisters, Lorna and Eldon Toews, Carolyn Klassen, Monica and Rob Wolgumuth, and Wanda and Roland Thiessen.

Also brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law Leroy and Marianne Reimer, Gerald and Joyce Reimer, Jenny and Wilbert Toews, Reg Reimer, Ellis and Dianne Reimer and Darlene Reimer and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father, Paul; parents-in-law Tony and Caroline Reimer; and brother-in-law Brian Klassen.

Services were held on April 10, 2016, at the Foothills Community Church in Pincher Creek.
