Empty building tour inspires other communities

By Erin Fairhurst Back in January, Dale Harrison, the newly appointed economic development officer for Claresholm, was sitting in on an Alberta SouthWest Regional Alliance meeting when something caught his attention.

“We were doing a roundtable,” he recalls. “And someone said something about the Crowsnest Pass hosting an empty building tour and I immediately thought, ‘What a great idea!’ ”

Empty building tours have grown in popularity in the United States, but it wasn’t until local business owner Jessica Atkinson had the idea to host one in Crowsnest Pass that the concept became more commonplace.

“All I really did was send out a bunch of emails,” Jessica says modestly of her role in the project.

She also arranged for local artisans to set up “pop-up shops” at some of the locations and had four local historians on hand to help answer questions about the buildings and the area.

Fast-forward to April.

Dale and his wife hit the highway to Crowsnest Pass from their home in Black Diamond so that they could take in the tour.

“I really wanted to experience it and also to learn from it,” Dale explains.

First up, Dale encountered local author Ken Roome on Highway 3. “He had his vehicle parked and it was marked Information, so we pulled in and chatted with him,” Dale says.

“He wasn’t part of the tour but he’s a real positive person and shared a lot of history about the Crowsnest Pass. He’s a great ambassador. We bought one of his books and I’m looking forward to reading it.”

Next was a stop in Blairmore for lunch at the Stone’s Throw Café — the main-street eatery that Jessica owns with her husband, Steve.

“I was able to chat a bit with Jessica,” says Dale.

“She had an idea and she ran with it. I believe we are going to see this type of thing just snowball.”

Meanwhile, in Bellevue, local realtors Wendy Valley and Ann Kibala, of Sutton Group, were in high spirits as they enjoyed the sunshine and chatted with residents and visitors to the community while they showcased the buildings that previously housed the medical clinic and pharmacy.

“It’s been a great day,” said Wendy.

“We’ve had a number of people come out.”

According to Ann, the tour was definitely worthwhile.

“Whether any sales happen immediately or not, it’s all word of mouth. People will remember the area, they’ll tell other people and eventually the right buyer will find the right building.”

Colten says that in beginning welding, he certainly wasn’t an expert right away, but he did put effort into getting better.

Before going to the regional competition, he asked past gold medallists about what to expect. He also got tips at his workplace, Boulder Metal Industries.

He sensed that the competition in Lethbridge went well. He was required to create a metal box with a small staircase attached, which required different kinds of welds.

Participants were given five hours to complete the project. He finished in three hours and placed first in the competition.

“I think everybody else was more excited than I was,” Colten says, but he felt good about the results.

One person who is happy for Colten is his boss, Myrl Boese at Boulder Metal. Myrl notes this isn’t the first time a Boulder Metal apprentice has won gold in Skills Canada. Last year, William Lindfield was the recipient of a gold in welding.

Myrl explains that Boulder Metal supports high school students

because getting youth started in a trade is healthy for the community.

Finally, two MHHS students won bronze in automotive technician competitions, Luke Lewis and Mackenzie Strachan-Reed.

Luke, Joel’s brother, became interested in automotives three years ago, when he discovered that his first car, a 1968 Volkswagen, needed considerable mechanical repair.

He had opportunities for practice at school and also at Fountain Tire, where he works. Luke felt he did well in Lethbridge.

Meanwhile, Livingstone School also had fine representation in Lethbridge, with Ryan Grose and Cameron Brush winning silver for video production.

Ryan explains that he has a longterm interest in movies and TV, and is fascinated with directing.

Cameron developed his interest while skiing at Castle Mountain Resort, where he liked to film his experiences.

Principal Chad Jensen was impressed with their work and encouraged them to enter the Skills Canada competition.

At the regionals in Lethbridge, their assignment was to document the many other Skills Canada

competitions, and given the theme Triumph Over Adversity.

This meant that their focus was on students who initially made mistakes in their competitions, and then recovered. Ryan handled much of the filming while Cameron conducted most of the interviews.

Their video could be no longer than one minute 15 seconds, and theirs clocked in at one minute 14

seconds.

They were happy with the results, considering this was their first year of competition and there was a time constraint on making the film.

Looking at how well Livingstone School and MHHS students did overall, it’s clear the Pincher Creek-Lundbreck area can feel proud of the talent of their youth.

By Brad Quarin “When I’m not dancing, I’m reading,” says Megan Bruder, 9.

Her mom, Jill, believes Megan spends two hours each day with her nose in a book, even reading on the school bus with her brother, Jasper.

“When we go into school, I’m still reading while I’m walking,” Megan says.

“I’ve learned to manoeuvre around students while reading.”

She is a frequent patron of Pincher Creek and District Municipal Library, but Jill says Megan has already read nearly every interesting book available at that location.

So, Megan has started borrowing books from other libraries through the Chinook Arch Regional Library System.

However, what’s more exciting — and is news today — is that Megan has helped the Pincher Creek library obtain a grant to buy more books for its own shelves. And Megan, Jasper and their friends will have a hand in choosing the new books.

Megan successfully applied for the Youth in Action grant from the Community Foundation of Lethbridge and Southwestern Alberta.

The grants support projects started by youth in southern Alberta, like the Operation Buy Books project launched by Megan in support of the local library.

Megan heard of the Youth in Action grant through library manager Janice Day, who mentioned it to Jill.

To apply for the grant, Megan had to go online and answer questions about how other children would benefit from the project and how the money would be spent.

She wrote three sentences for each question, and provided information about Friends of the Library, which would be the grant recipient.

The Community Foundation accepted her proposal and gave $1,000 to See LIBRARY GRANT, continued on page 8

One of the librarians told Megan that Janice was shaking with excitement about the news of the grant and wanted to make sure to tell Megan first. Megan was excited about the news, as well.

The Bruders are now planning a trip to Calgary, so Megan, Jasper and a few of their friends can check out books at United Library Services to buy for Pincher Creek.

Megan will try to make sure the group represents both boys and girls, and a few different age groups.

She personally enjoys fairy tales, mysteries and diaries written by girls who have lived through historic events.

She particularly likes Judy Blume, The Cupcake Diaries and Harry Potter.

However, in choosing books for the Pincher Creek library, she says she’ll try to look for books that will be interesting to others as well.

If a book is part of a series, they will try to get the whole series, she says. They will mainly be looking at children’s books.

Janice says Megan’s grant is good for the library, which will also receive a separate $6,000 grant for new shelving.

The current shelving for the large-print books doesn’t fit together properly and doesn’t have enough space between shelves for people with mobility issues to easily access, Janice says.

New shelving will be tipped, putting books on a slant so their titles are easier for visitors to read. Friends of the Library is also contributing $2,500 towards the new shelving.

With the Community Foundation grant, the library hopes to have the shelving set up by summertime.

SPCA has a purr-fect volunteer

The youngest volunteer at the Crowsnest Pass SPCA is Maggie Gietz, who is 10 and attends Grade 5 at Isabelle Sellon School.

For Maggie, getting involved in the local SPCA was a logical fit.

“I really like cats,” she says, and she is the former owner of one. “They’re so soft and funny. They go crazy and they don’t even know what they’re doing.”

She has been a welcome addition to the family at the Hillcrest shelter. “Maggie has been with us for well over a year now, and she is such a big help,” says Wendy Zack, SPCA co-ordinator.

“Maggie is willing to help out with any task and the animals just love her,” she adds. “Everyone here looks forward to seeing Maggie every Friday afternoon!”

Her interest in cats began with her own, named Java. The family had to give up Java when they moved to Coleman two years ago.

Maggie’s dad, Waren, says Java is currently living at a farm, where he’s “probably happy as can be.”

After giving up her cat, Maggie chose to investigate how fat cats are for a Grade 4 science project.

She went to the Crowsnest Pass SPCA and began weighing the 19 cats, finding two that were

overweight. One was 17.4 pounds and another was 15 pounds.

It was during this time that the SPCA staff suggested to her that she could volunteer at the shelter.

The idea appealed to her, because she missed having a cat of her own.

Her responsibilities at the shelter include taking out food bowls, making sure all cats are still in the shelter and providing them some attention.

Providing attention is the best part and she does this by petting and cuddling them, and playing with them with strings and other cat toys.

Some of the cats were shy towards her at first, but not any longer. Now they show their love for Maggie by jumping into her lap and sitting with her.

Last winter, the Crowsnest Pass SPCA chose to honour Maggie by naming a cat after her.

Maggie describes her namesake cat as fat and lazy, always hanging out on a desk. Maggie the cat can be summoned by tapping a pen on paper on her desk.

Having a cat named after her was special, Maggie says. Her brother Tucker, who is 12, also visits the cats occasionally and has one named after him too.

My Little Corner Rodeo was a new concept to me when I moved here a few years back. The closest I had come to rodeo was watching the chuckwagon ponies at my hometown fair and two-stepping at country bars during my university years.

I arrived home from my first time at the Pincher Creek Pro Rodeo with dirt in my eyes, nose and ears, and a nasty sunburn. By the end of the third day, I had figured out how most of the events worked and had a full picture card.

Both my daughter, Jaiden, and I discovered the allure of capturing that elusive shot with the cowboy’s face and the animal both in focus while conveying the action and emotion of the moment.

We found our own adrenaline rush as we worked our way through hundreds of shots at the end of the weekend. Over the past four years we’ve put together an impressive collection of photos.

Shooting at the Kananaskis Pro Rodeo in the Crowsnest Sports Complex is an entirely different challenge due to the indoor setting and dim lighting.

It doesn’t stop me from trying!

This year I captured better images. I hope to have them posted to our website by the end of the week.

Because I was shooting from underneath the big screen, I didn’t have a chance to check it out. Judging from crowd response, though, it appears the decision to bring some tech savvy to the rodeo went over well.

When the KPR website claims you’ll be “so close to the action in the arena that you’ll get dirt in your beer,” it’s not far from the truth.

More than anything else, you can smell the dirt when you walk in the door.

Those cowboys don’t appear to mind being in the dirt — it seems part of the tradition.

I imagine life on the pro rodeo circuit to be a challenging one, whether travelling to one rodeo just down the road or across North America chasing a cowboy’s dream.

Thanks to the crowd, when Call Marr, Cole Rutledge, Cooper Trotz, Cooper Zur, Dustin Flundra, Kyle Thomson, Lucas Michalsky, Lucas Weatherbee, Otys Little Mustache, Randy Smith and Wyatt Laughlin saddled up in Coleman, they knew they were on home turf.

Spring is filled with sweet sounds of music

By Erin Fairhurst The Crowsnest Community Choir has had an exceptional year of making music together, and this Sunday they’ll showcase their talents at their year-end concert, Voices From Earth to Sky. The concert will take place at 3 p.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Bellevue, and choir director Debbie Goldstein says that audience members can expect a variety of music — “from Latin to the Eagles.”

“We’re going to get up there and just sing to the community,” Debbie says. “Everyone is welcome to attend.”

Debbie, who has been directing the choir for three years, goes on to say that families with young children are especially welcome. “There’s lots of room for small children to move around and enjoy the music!”

Tickets for the concert are $10 or $20 per family, and all of the money raised goes back into the choir’s yearly projects.

“This year we had a guest conductor from Lethbridge come and work with us,” Debbie says. “And I think that this year has been our best year for just having a beautiful and cohesive sound.”

Though the Crowsnest Community Choir is wrapping up for the season, Debbie says that potential new members are always welcome to contact her at 403-753-0312.

Everyone is welcome and no musical background is required. “We have a lot of fun,” Debbie says, “and we enjoy learning together.”

The uniqueness of the Kootenai Brown Pioneer Village is interwoven throughout its history. Its mandate to preserve and promote the unique frontier history of the Pincher Creek area is legendary.

Highlighting the pioneer eras through the 1950s, special emphasis is placed upon the early chronicles.

One of Pincher Creek’s claims to fame is that it was established as a North West Mounted Police horse ranch back in the late summer of 1878.

Corporate and family ranches abounded, along with farming, railway, coal and lumber development and an array of rural one-room schools. The growing settlement of Pincher Creek served as the region’s commercial centre where pivotal developments took place.

The Village’s presentation of that history — now a selection of 25 heritage buildings tastefully arranged on six acres of land and housing over 20,000 eye-catching artifacts, each with a tale to be told — also is unique.

Most rural museums are contained in only one or two structures, yet with our venue 3” wide version

there are many opportunities for exhibits, programs and trips down memory lane.

The first heritage building to be moved on-site was the rustic 1883 three-room log home of Waterton Lakes founder John George (Kootenai) Brown. This iconic flagship arrived here on Halloween Eve 1970, hence the name Kootenai Brown Pioneer Village.

The Father Lacombe Hermitage, the Ward Cabin of 1897, the 1894 Fishburn School and the Kootenai Outpost of the NWMP all followed in quick succession, each flanked by a traditional wooden boardwalk that represented pioneer transportation.

Recent additions to our complex include the massive Bank of Commerce/Turcott building, the expanded commercial history exhibits in the Reg and Mildred Beere Exhibition Hall and the garage and bakery with their oldtime looks from the 1920s.

More exciting developments are just around the corner. There will be a series of blockbuster anniversary events at the Kootenai Brown Pioneer Village throughout 2016 so please stay tuned for all of the fascinating plans!

Get the buzz on raising mason bees

By Brad Quarin Residents of Crowsnest Pass and Pincher Creek are abuzz with word of an excellent pollinator for agricultural purposes.

In April, attendees of the Lifestyle Show in Coleman learned more about mason bees.

On May 5, Perfect Posies in Pincher Creek will be offering a free workshop on how to raise the little guys.

This is all thanks to Roger Riis, a Coalhurst resident and owner of Bird Brain-Iac, a small business selling mason bee houses.

He explains that he first took an interest in mason bees a year and a half ago, when he started making birdhouses to keep himself occupied in retirement.

A cousin saw the birdhouses he was building and suggested he try making mason bee houses as well.

At the time, Roger didn’t even know what a mason bee was. However, it turned out he had seen them before, as mason bees are native to southern Alberta.

He describes them as appearing black in colour, like flies. They aren’t honey makers and rarely sting.

More importantly, mason bees can pollinate seven to nine times better than honey bees, according to Roger.

move 20 times a minute. “They’re just constantly flittering around,” he says.

While the bees can make their own nests, human-made houses are of great benefit to them.

In our area, mason bees often hatch in their nests when the weather begins to warm, only to die off when it suddenly gets cold again.

In contrast, mason bee houses allow for an 80 per cent survival rate, he says.

The houses look like birdhouses, with cardboard tubes inside to nest in.

It can be wonderful for children to see the egg cells inside and learn about bees and pollination, he says.

Last year, it was a battle just trying to explain what mason bees are, according to Roger. However, he has found that local interest has spiked this year.

The latest Lifestyle Show was his best trade show ever, as he sold $600 in products.

The upcoming workshop at Perfect Posies is his next opportunity to share his knowledge about mason bees with our area. It begins at 6 p.m. on May 5.

This workshop won’t teach visitors how to build the mason bee houses, but it will provide tips on how to raise the bees.

It will be a great educational experience, and for Roger, this is the best part of the job.

Memento boxes keep memories alive Submitted by Kerri Robins A walk down memory lane with someone we love adds a bit of sunshine to any day.

But when memory fails, it’s an assistance to have loving reminders nearby to spark the imagination and start conversations.

This is exactly why the continuing-care area of the Crowsnest Pass Health Centre is installing memory boxes along the hallways, one for each resident’s room.

The wall-mounted display cases — about the size of a medicine cabinet — show off items and mementoes that matter to the residents, helping to bring alive important moments and memories from their past.

“The boxes are really important for our residents and families because they can help ignite memories and start a wonderful conversation reminiscing,” says Diane Nummi, unit manager of continuing care at the health centre.

Thanks to funding from the Crowsnest Pass Health Foundation, 18 boxes are already installed in the dementia and special care unit, at a cost of $183 apiece.

Diane says she’s pleased with this special

project.

“Our goal is to install a box outside each resident’s door by the end of the year,” she says.

“They provide context and an engaging way for staff to get to know their residents personally.”

There are 53 residents currently living in continuing care. They or their families can personalize their boxes as they wish.

While each box is locked to safeguard the keepsakes, the glass door allows passersby to see the treasures within.

Becky Rinaldi, who chairs the Crowsnest Pass Health Foundation, says the boxes are a touching sentiment for continuing-care residents.

“It’s really nice to provide our seniors with a means to think back on their lives and relive special moments with family,” she says.

“It may seem small, but the rewards are huge. I’m thrilled to be part of this important project.”

By Brad Quarin Emergency Preparedness Week across Canada is the first week of May and residents of Crowsnest Pass, Pincher Creek and area will have the chance to learn about preparing for a crisis.

Next Tuesday, Crowsnest Pass Fire/Rescue will hold an open house at the Blairmore Elks Hall from 2 to 6 p.m. On offer will be information about what the municipality will do in an emergency, and what families need to be prepared to do.

Curtis Stevens, deputy chief at Crowsnest Pass Fire/Rescue, says the open house will address emergencies such as floods, forest fires and landslides.

One important feature will be teaching attendees how to make a kit with enough food and water to keep a family safe for 72 hours, in case help cannot come sooner.

Anyone can attend, and Curtis sees this as an important event for those concerned about keeping their families safe.

May 7 is Wildfire Community Preparedness Day so Crowsnest Pass will have another open house that day, this time at the Blairmore firehall.

There will be a barbecue, free to the general public. Presentations at the barbecue, including one from the FireSmart crew, will be informative, says Curtis.

Those who attend will learn how to prevent wildfires, how to keep their houses safe and what to do in case of a wildfire.

Meanwhile, the Town and Municipal District of Pincher Creek and the Village of Cowley are teaming up to set up an information table at Ranchland Mall in Pincher Creek on May 6.

Information at this table will include how to make the 72-hour kit, says Laurie Wilgosh, chief administrative officer for the town. Visitors will be able to see completed kits and enter into a draw to win one of the three.

One safety tip Curtis and Pincher Creek fire chief Dave Cox wish to share with readers is to have on hand a kit with enough food and water to last their family 72 hours.

Dave notes that people will be able to find helpful guides to building such a kit online.

Author shares tales of a doctor and the great dog attack

By Brad Quarin A bit more light was shed on Coleman’s medical and social history when author Helen Webster visited Crowsnest Pass to discuss her new book, Medical Man. The book profiles her grandfather T. Robert Ross, a doctor in Coleman from 1910 to 1919. Dr. Ross fuelled his granddaughter’s imagination with tales of his many adventures.

“My grandfather was a storyteller, and he passed that on to all his family,” she said.

Helen presented copies of her book to Crowsnest Community Library and Crowsnest Museum in April, and also read from her work to about a dozen residents.

She revealed that Dr. Ross was not only the first doctor on the scene of the Hillcrest Mine Disaster in 1914, but was also present for other unusual medical emergencies.

Her book recounts a scare in Coleman 100 years ago with feral dogs on the loose ­— shades of Stephen King’s Cujo.

Like other accounts in the book, the story is told as “creative non-fiction,” reporting history in the form of a novel.

Dr. Ross dealt with dog bites in January 1916 as a pack of vicious canines terrorized the community.

The now defunct Coleman Bulletin describes Dr. Ross stitching up

victims. After treating one child, he rushed home to warn his own family, Helen said.

The streets were nearly empty and many of the storekeepers stayed home that day. When Dr. Ross got home, his sons were out sledding and were called inside.

The boys had already seen the dogs and knew someone had been bitten. Their worry was that this would mean they wouldn’t be allowed to play outside.

The Coleman Bulletin quoted a resident calling for the police to use machine guns on the dogs, a demand that drew laughter from the modern audience.

In her research, Helen also read about rum running in Crowsnest Pass, with a shootout between bootleggers and police at one house.

The bootleggers offered to surrender if the police called a doctor, so Dr. Ross was sent to the scene.

Medical Man was written over four years. However, with more stories flooding in, Helen says she is still writing articles for magazines in her attempt to preserve and share Crowsnest Pass social history.

The winner of the draw for a copy of the novel was Donita Bradbury.

The book will be available to buy at Crowsnest Museum’s gift shop.

Edward Elijah Tangaroa Lowry 2007 – 2016 Edward Elijah Tangaroa Lowry of Lundbreck, beloved son of John and Margaret Lowry, passed away suddenly on April 3, 2016, at the age of eight years.

Besides his loving parents, Edward is lovingly remembered by his six sisters, Sarah Victoria Tinirau, Elizabeth Margaret NgaAriki, Katheryne Rene TeVahine Arii, Emma Louisa Tutini, Rebecca Keiran Te-Atua-Nui and Jessica Michelle Peonui Tawhiri; his five brothers, William Alma RangiMana, Iohane Benjamin TuiPeleHaka, James Ray Tewhiti, Elisha Charles O-rango-mai and Joseph Levi Ngatata; his niece, Margaret Linda Hera Lowry; brother-in-law Cameron Michael Bruder (Katheryne); sister-in-law Pamella Christine Norsworthy (William); his grandpa Raymond Cooper; as well as numerous cousins and their families.

Edward was predeceased by his grandparents Thomas Gilbert and Veia Gwendoline Atua (Love) Lowry, and Alma Elizabeth (Taylor) Cooper.

Edward was born in the Pincher Creek hospital on Dec. 12, 2007. He entered school at Livingstone School kindergarten with Mrs. Dickson in Lundbreck in 2013. He was in Miss Annett’s and Mrs. Larson’s Grade 2 class. He started Cubs this year and enjoyed the activities greatly.

Eddie or Ed, as he was known to his friends and family, loved playing with his Lego, singing and being outdoors. He always had a basketball or soccer ball in his hands, “heading over to the court to play.”

A funeral service was held on April 9, 2016, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Pincher Creek, with Bishop Gordon Young officiating. Interment to follow at Taylorville Cemetery.

Alex Kay of Pincher Creek passed away at the Pincher Creek hospital on April 16, 2016, at the age of 83.

Greetings from the residents at Crestview Lodge Submitted by Charmaine Tienkamp March was the beginning of our fantastic outings for the year. We will be trying to take advantage of all the good weather we can during our adventures out and about.

To start off we visited the Frank Slide Interpretive Centre. It was a small group but we had a great time.

We were lucky to have a guide from the centre show us about. The staff were so helpful answering all our questions and helping us in and out of our seats when we watched the movies.

We were quite happy that we went before peak season for our trip, otherwise we may not have had the opportunity to have such great one-on-one assistance with the wonderful staff at the centre.

Another outing we greatly enjoyed was at the Windsor Centre in Lundbreck. Ian Tamblyn was the entertainer ­— and boy, was he awesome! We laughed so hard at his stories and antics, more than anyone else we have seen before; he was a pure delight. His music was inspiring and fun. We would love to see him again, hands down!

We had our first Tim Hortons outing in the year and that was fun. The goodies were so tasty and the coffee was deliciously warm. We had some family members come and join us, for a quick one as they say, but as always we got to talking and next thing we knew it was a good, long visit. We were able to catch up with people we hardly see anymore and shared lots of laughs with everyone. We will have to do that

again soon, so look for us and pop by to say hi!

Speaking of coffee outings, we sure enjoy it when other people stop by and coffee with us. One of our favourite groups is Vista Village. We miss some our residents that have moved on to Vista, but we are so grateful for the opportunity to visit when they come see us here at Crestview.

We also reciprocate and go there for coffee outings. It helps us to all keep in touch and socialize with each other. It is hard when we have to move on, but it is heartwarming that we still get to be close.

Thank you, Melanie at Vista, for helping us all keep in touch with each other through your program.

Festivus Games rock CrossFit Pincher Creek

Athletes from southern Alberta and British Columbia cheered one another on at the Festivus Games, held in Pincher Creek in mid April. The competition included four workouts for the 41 athletes, who ranged in age from 12 to 59. Winners in each age group received trophies reminiscent of the traditional Festivus pole from a television episode of Seinfeld. Heather O’Bear made good on her promise to have her hair cut down to her scalp if her fundraiser brought in donations of $2,000. Kendal Brands of Side Street Stylz in Blairmore pulled out her shears and Heather’s hair will go to Pantene Beautiful Lengths to become a wig for a cancer patient in need. The Canadian Cancer Society will receive $2,211 thanks to Heather’s efforts.

When the photos were shared on our Shootin’ the Breeze Facebook page, Evelyn David made this comment: “Takes guts and heart to go to that extent for some women to give up all their hair, but it’s for a very worthy cause. Hugs and cheers for doing this for those who really need it.”

Forms available for large-item pickups in Crowsnest Pass

By Brad Quarin Spring cleaning can be a chore for some, but for others, it can be nearly impossible.

Fortunately, the Municipality of Crowsnest Pass can make the job a little easier for seniors and those with disabilities through the provision of a largeitem pickup service.

Forms to apply for this service will be available at town office next Monday, and residents over 64 or those who are disabled have until May 20 to complete them.

These forms advise the municipality how many

items need to be picked up and determine whether or not an item is eligible for pickup.

Beneficiaries are allowed to place a limit of three large items on their curbs for the municipality to pick up.

“Large items” refers to unwanted household furniture and appliances, says Deserie Michalsky, administrative assistant for the operations department.

There is a $25 fee if the municipality needs to remove Freon from fridges or freezers.

Seniors and the disabled will need help from

family and friends to get these large items to the curb, Deserie says.

In past years about 50 residents have benefited from the service.

Offering this large-item pickup service to all residents would be too expensive, so the municipality offers the general public Service Plus instead, she says.

With Service Plus, residents take their garbage to the operations department. This program will be available in June.
