Both Mary-Jo Burles and Wes Alm, author of The Kings of Sharples Creek, documented the history of King Ranch, drawing on their personal memories of the brothers.

Maurice and Harrold were born in England in 1897 and 1899 and were children when their dad, Augustus King, moved them to the United States, Wes writes.

The family then moved to Alberta and back to Washington, but Maurice and Harrold settled in Livingstone Range in the 1920s.

After Harrold spent time trapping in the area, they had saved up the money to start their cattle ranch. The Great Depression set in a few years later.

“Ranching as a whole has an ancient history in southern Alberta, going back to the 1880s.

But this one in particular was important because it saw a family-operated ranch succeed even in the tough times of the 1930s,” Farley says.

“It was one of the big success stories in terms of family ranches in this area.”

He attributes that to the hard work and knowledge of the brothers. “They knew how to raise cattle and work the land and make sure that it rejuvenated itself.”

Even after the Depression, the two lived extremely frugally, without indoor plumbing or

running water. They used only wood for their stove, slept in beds made out of bear hides and never threw anything away, Wes writes.

His book recounts how, instead of paying to see a dentist, the Kings pulled out hurting teeth with pliers, and each died with only two or three teeth left.

This has led many to ask why they lived as they did, given that the two were technically multimillionaires. Their property sold for $6 million after they died, which Mary-Jo says was the biggest land sale in Canada’s ranching history.

However, she explains that, in life, the Kings were “land rich and cash poor.”

Farley believes that because the brothers began ranching before modern conveniences, they were more comfortable with traditional ways.

“They had lots of enthusiasm and dedication for that, and it seemed to work,” he says. Their ranch, in its earliest days, was very isolated as well.

Wes also contends that, having experienced the Great Depression, the Kings believed it could return at any time. “They never gave a thought as to their net worth,” he adds.

“close in every way,” a consequence of growing up together in poverty and sharing the same struggles.

However, there were still conflicts between the two.

“Maurice and Harrold were so much different in character and personality that I found it hard to believe they were brothers,” Wes writes. Arguments were daily occurrences and would always end by Harrold going silent.

Wes explains the differences, describing Maurice as smart, “extremely anti-government” and a devoted reader of the Bible.

Harrold had what Wes calls a “split person-

ality,” at times kind and considerate and at times sad and cold. He was the cook, housekeeper and gardener in the household.

Mary-Jo sums up the differences between the two brothers by saying Harrold was the “quieter, shier” of the two.

Despite their reputations, Mary-Jo says the Kings were not hermits, as they showed up at social gatherings and visited neighbours.

Their trips to Pincher Creek and Claresholm were rare and memorable for town residents.

Farley highlights one humorous anecdote, explaining that Maurice, after a foot injury, always wore a loose-fitting rubber boot on one foot, and a cowboy boot on the other.

When people asked why he wore two different kinds of boots, Maurice would reply that he

had heard there was a 50 per cent chance of rain that day.

They were also respected enough that Pincher Creek banks would stay open late to accommodate their visits, Farley says.

The Kings were sympathetic to the struggles of ranchers, and bought shares in other ranches, he says.

Another sign of their community spirit was that, in their will, they left their potato slicer, a cattle mount and a 1963 calendar to KBPV. Farley himself has been to King Ranch once, hunting with his dad there as a child. His dad had permission from the Kings, and Farley recalls the land as heavily wooded.

Thanks to the new easement, that land and its splendours will be saved for posterity.

Service dog joins Alexis for a new beginning

By Erin Fairhurst We’ve all had those moments in life where we get knocked down and then have to pick ourselves up off the ground.

But for Alexis Bohmer, those moments don’t just happen frequently, they happen literally.

“My panic attacks range in severity,” says the CCHS graduate, who now lives and studies in Lethbridge.

“It’s not convenient when it happens in the middle of a grocery store,” she adds with a wry laugh. “That’s not enjoyable.”

The fact that Alexis, 19, can laugh about her condition should be surprising.

But anyone who gets to know her will soon discover that she’s an incredibly strong young woman, and she’s unabashedly candid when it comes to discussing her lifelong battle with mental illness.

“I had to learn at a young age how to put my feelings into words and to articulate my experience,” she explains, “because it was the only way to let people around me know what I was going through.”

For as long as she can remember, Alexis has struggled with anxiety and panic disorders, and then with depression in her teen years. She didn’t let the stigma of mental illness silence her, but instead became a dedicated advocate

and peer mentor to those around her.

“I’ve always felt compelled to share my story,” Alexis says.

“Not because I’m looking for attention, but because helping others also helps me.

If other people can benefit from my story, then I want to keep sharing it.”

Before moving to Lethbridge to attend university, Alexis worked full time with the Boys and Girls Club of Crowsnest Pass, and the experience of working with youth inspired her to pursue an education degree. But her time in Lethbridge hasn’t been easy.

“This year has been the most challenging,” she says. “I felt like I was starting to get a good handle on things and better understand my triggers for anxiety.

But then everything just got turned upside down.”

“Since moving to Lethbridge and going to school,” she writes on her personal web page, “I was assaulted.”

Alexis goes on to describe how the incident caused post-traumatic stress, which led to her panic attacks intensifying. On her worst days, she’s afraid to leave her bedroom. On her good days, she ventures out into the rest of her house or to one of the few places she feels safe.

“There aren’t many places that I feel safe right now, but that’s OK,” she says.

And though Alexis has an amazing support system around her — her friends and family — she’ll soon have one more faithful companion in her corner: a psychiatric service dog that she plans to call Atticus.

“The word ‘Aadi’ in Sanskrit means ‘beginning,’ and that’s exactly what he means to me — a new beginning,” she says.

“I tear up thinking about the things that I’ll be able to do again, like going to the grocery store alone or going for a hike. I have so much energy and there’s so much I want to do.”

Alexis and Atticus will be undergoing a training program called Assistance Dogs for All, and Atticus will become fully certified within six to eight months.

“There’s countless things that he’ll be able to do for me,” says Alexis, already sounding like a proud mama.

“If I’m in a crowded place, he’ll be able to make sure that my personal space is still protected. If I feel like I’m not doing well, I can give him a signal so he can lead me to a safe space.”

Atticus will even be trained in how to assist Alexis during a panic attack.

By doing things like sitting on her feet, or even lying on her, he’ll be able to help her to feel grounded. Best of all, Atticus won’t ever leave her side, and he’ll always have her back.

“Right now, I’m always looking behind me,” Alexis says. “I’m always afraid of what’s coming.”

Alexis also hopes that by having Atticus by her side she’ll be able to keep the conversation about mental health out in the open.

“I’m sure that people will ask about him,” she says, adding that she’s expecting questions when she does her teaching practicum later this spring.

“I’ll be able to let people know that just because you can’t see my condition, it doesn’t mean it isn’t there.”

Alexis goes on to say that she has a younger brother with Type 1 diabetes.

“Just in the way that his body doesn’t produce insulin, mine doesn’t produce certain chemicals that allow me to control my emotions,” she says.

“Medicine helps but diabetics also need to count their carbs, monitor their blood sugar and do physical activity. With mental illness, you need to do other things too — like counselling and figuring out how to help yourself.

Everyone is different.”

Talking about mental illness doesn’t have to be embarrassing, or even sad.

In fact, one in five adult Canadians will experience a mental disorder in their lifetime, so it’s important to keep the conversation going.

“I don’t mind when people ask me how I’m doing,” Alexis says frankly.

“But I do mind when they say ‘How are you doing?’ or ‘How are you feeling?’ in a really sad or serious voice. I’m not broken.”

Alexis will be picking up Atticus this week, and she has started a GoFundMe page to share her journey and to raise funds for the training program that she and Atticus will be partaking in.

“This process is expensive,” she explains. “It requires time and dedication, and then there are just the general expenses of having a pet.”

Even if some aren’t able to offer financial support, Alexis says she’s thrilled with the amount of mental and emotional support she’s received so far.

“It’s just been amazing. Sometimes it’s hard to convince yourself that things will get better when you can’t see the other side, but I really do hope that this is the start of a new beginning.”

By Brad Quarin One of Lundbreck’s most outstanding citizens is an adopted son.

Weldon Vickers, named the community’s Senior Citizen of the Year during National Volunteer Week, is a relative newcomer to the hamlet.

He arrived three years ago, but quickly took to Lundbreck.

“I wish I would have moved down here sooner. I love it down here,” he says. “The people are great, the country’s great, things to do.”

Previously, he resided in Calgary. He is a retired architect who lives with his brother, but they had to move because of the floods.

A friend told him he had a house available for them in Lundbreck. “I felt like a new environment would be a good thing,” Weldon says.

He had never heard of Lundbreck before,

though he had visited Pincher Creek. He didn’t have many expectations before arriving, but discovered he enjoys it here.

The people were supportive, and gave him tips on how to live in the hamlet. “I think the heart and soul of the country is the rural people,” he says.

Weldon says he has a diploma in recreational therapy. “I’m a play person,” he says.

“I think play is more important in life than work.”

This is why he promotes creativity and leisure, and it underlies his passion for drawing up house plans and building things, such as canoes.

When he got to Lundbreck, joining the Windsor Heritage Drop-In Centre was a natural fit. The senior centre provides a place for crafts, games and coffee for Lundbreck’s elderly population.

Weldon is a director at the centre, helping to organize crafts and opening the building for coffee time.

As a director, he is also concerned with expanding the centre, specifically by finding new members and starting new activities.

The centre isn’t his only volunteer activity. He is a member of the Lundbreck Gardeners and is often found pulling weeds and planting for the group.

During Cornfest, Lundbreck’s annual summer celebration, Weldon helps set up tents and prepare the ballpark. And he is a director for the Lundbreck Citizens Council.

His background in drawing architectural plans came in handy on the Patton Park revitalization committee, which he describes as a long-term project to improve the local park.

The group envisions adding a garden, renovating the skateboard park and hosting more “hands-on activities” there.

The committee is still researching its options, and Weldon drew up possible plans for the park.

The Senior Citizen of the Year award made him feel appreciated, and inspires him to do even more. He wasn’t totally surprised by the honour, since people kept asking him if he would be attending the volunteer luncheon and even offered him a ride.

Despite doing so much for the community, he feels his volunteering has done more for him than others.

Volunteering allows him to learn, meet new people and have new experiences.

He feels volunteerism relates to the importance of leisure, and says that these values are still important as Alberta undergoes difficult economic times.

“Money’s not what made this country,” he says. “It’s people’s fortitude, family, their commitment, their resourcefulness, their intelligence, their creativity.”

“You have to have those things with money, or money doesn’t mean anything.”

My Little Corner At this time last year I was preparing for the graduation of my only child and found it to be a time of great nostalgia.

I consider myself very fortunate to have a teenager who caused virtually no grief and didn’t mind spending time with her family.

I worried about how things would go when summer ended and Jaiden set off for university in Saskatoon.

Much of the stress was caused by people predicting how difficult it would be, as the two of us were so close.

Jaiden’s last night at home in Pincher Creek was emotional and I found myself in tears many times.

The worst was when I started to write in a card for her. It was meant to be a short message, but eventually covered all available space on the inside and the back side of the card.

I tried to convey my pride in the young woman she has grown to be and to share any tidbits of advice that might possibly help on her new adventure.

We were both a little tense as we set her up in the city and I prepared to leave. When I drove away, a huge sob escaped my throat — a sound I hadn’t heard before. I let the hot tears flow freely down my face; it actually felt good.

Jaiden’s university year has come to a successful end, and I look forward to her coming home to spend the summer.

I’ve missed her and many things, like dance performances, that were special times for the two of us.

In the end, we’ve both had a good year. It’s part of the evolving relationship between mother and daughter.

Being in Saskatchewan, Jaiden also had more time with my parents this year. This makes me incredibly happy, as I know it does them.

I wasn’t close with my grandparents and am grateful for the easy relationship between Jaiden and hers.

My mom is the glue of our family — she holds us all together. She is calm, kind, smart, beautiful and has a warm heart.

She is the strongest and most resilient mother and wife I know, and the past year has been filled with reminders of this.

I wish I had her grace — evident in her at all times, but especially under pressure.

I love my mom and I love being a mom.

By Brad Quarin Members of Lundbreck’s Windsor Heritage Drop-In Centre are taking a trip to Galt Museum in Lethbridge on May 11, and other seniors are welcome to join.

They are hoping the Galt Museum archivists and collections technicians will be able to supply useful tips on how to store and catalogue Lundbreck’s memorabilia.

The drop-in centre provides a place for crafts, games and coffee for Lundbreck residents aged 50 and up. And it is also home to a history club with historic photos and artifacts, says board member Lou Niven.

The trip was made possible through a fundraiser by Lundbreck volunteers at the Lethbridge casino. These fundraisers cover the centre’s utilities and operating expenses and can also be used to support seniors activities such as the bus trip and lunch.

Everyone joining the trip will pay $10 to cover the museum entrance fee and a gratuity to the bus driver. To secure a seat on the bus, contact Lou at 403-627-7963.

The Galt Museum trip is open to local people aged 60 and up.

School bus safety reminder from First Student First Student would like to thank all the people who helped to make this safety campaign happen.

To the Town and MD of Pincher Creek for their support; to all the news, social media and people who helped to get our story out; to Tim Hortons for allowing us to take over their drive-thru on April 22; and especially to Sheryl Baker and her boys William and Zachary.

Despite the message Reds Flashing — No Passing being shared and broadcast for an entire month, we still experienced a “fly-by” here in Pincher Creek the afternoon of April 18.

The motorist admitted to simply not paying attention as they passed the school bus with the red lights flashing.

School bus drivers do everything in their power to protect our most precious cargo, but children are the most vulnerable as they load and unload the school bus.

This is when motorists need to do their part.

These children are the future of our community and the country. The sky is the limit to what each and every child can achieve. Unfortunately, that potential can be cut short by one careless motorist.

As school bus drivers, we recognize and thank the large majority of motorists who stop for our red flashing lights and help us keep our children safe.

To that extremely small percentage of motorists who are in a hurry and not paying attention, we ask you to “watch for us on the yellow bus” and be aware of our flashing red lights and stop.

Reds Flashing ­­­­— No Passing. It really only takes about 30 seconds of a motorist’s life to stop, but it could mean the life of a child.

School Bus Safety and Awareness month might be over, but we urge everyone to keep sharing our message: Reds Flashing — No Passing.

It is said that it takes a village to raise a child. Well, it also takes a village to keep a child safe.

School bus drivers need everyone to be diligent and alert when they see a school bus with red lights flashing and stop.

Please help us keep our children safe.

Heritage Acres is ready for summer

By Gaytha Heighes Things are humming as Heritage Acres Farm Museum gets ready for the summer season.

Not just the bees are hovering around blooming bushes and trees. Volunteers and staff are busy with cleaning the grounds and artifacts, restocking snack and gift shop items, organizing a library, tuning up machinery, preparing marketing tools and planning events.

One such event is coming up very soon: the annual garage sale which is held on the grounds. It will run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on May 14.

Vendors from southern Alberta will come to display and sell their unique offerings. On this day, no entrance fee will be charged for visitors to the museum buildings and exhibits.

Other special events will be held throughout the summer and fall.

Mark your calendar for the annual show on July 29, 30 and 31 when you can visit with friends old and new at the pancake breakfasts Saturday and Sunday and view the vintage farm equipment at work. There will be lots to see in the fields and buildings.

Don’t forget to stop at the gift shop located in

the Synder House for a snack and a peek at the interesting art and gift items.

The fall fair cannot be missed either, with a harvest threshing bee, games for children, entertainment, a bench show and art and craft demonstrations.

It will take place on Sept. 17, starting at 9 a.m. with a hearty breakfast. All the museum buildings and exhibits will be open and there will be concessions open all day.

All summer season there will be camping available for one or more nights, with a special that includes a family museum entrance and three days of boondock camping for $50.

Like we say, busy as the bees — but not at night. These spring evenings we watch the empty roads and glimpse foxes and deer reclaiming their territory.

It is lovely to spend our nights with our RV parked beside Synder House, helping to get ready for the season and preparing to be camp hosts. Be sure to come visit.

Artists aim to draw big crowd

By Erin Fairhurst If you’ve ever wandered around an art gallery and wondered just how those pieces of artwork came to be, now you’ll have the chance to see just how and where art is created.

On Mother’s Day weekend, a selfguided Artists Studio Tour will take place in and around Crowsnest Pass.

“It’s a great way to promote our community,” says organizer and local artist Lynnette Jessop. “And it’s also a great way to promote the artists who live here.”

About 30 local and area artists will open up their homes and their studios for the tour. Members of the public are invited to stop by for a visit between noon and 6 p.m on May 7 and 8.

“There will a wide representation of art and artists,” Lynnette says.

Indeed, visitors can look forward to seeing sculpture, collage, pottery, watercolour, stained glass and more — all in the private workspace of the artists themselves.

And, of course, the artists will be on hand to discuss their work and experiences and to provide demonstrations at certain locations.

Tour participants may even be treated to refreshments, beverages and samples to take home with them. Original and unique art will also be on sale.

Lynnette partook in a similar tour while on vacation last spring in Victoria.

“I just loved the feel of it. It was a great experience,” she says. She adds that the idea to host one in Crowsnest Pass came up during a brainstorming session hosted by the Crowsnest Pass Creative Minds.

Plans in the works for Crowsnest Pass seniors lodge

By Brad Quarin The quest to build a new and improved York Creek Lodge for Crowsnest Pass seniors has finally yielded results. The provincial government has granted the Crowsnest Pass Senior Housing Board funds to build a new seniors lodge, with a target for completion in December 2017.

“I just think it’s a great thing, because we will have a really nice, modern, comfortable place for our seniors to be living,” says Joanne Drain, co-chairwoman of the board.

She says she has been on the board for seven years, and that’s how long she has tried to bring about either renovations or a new building.

The board manages the lodge, which is owned by the provincial government. Currently, Joanne leads the board with Donna Stelmachovich.

The new building will be in Coleman, so seniors will stay at the current lodge in Blairmore while the new one is being built.

Residents can look forward to some changes. Herman Openauer, who lives at the lodge, says the plans look interesting.

There will be a number of advantages to the new building, principally the larger rooms and bathrooms that will provide greater accessibility for seniors in walkers and wheelchairs, Joanne says.

There will be 61 rooms, three more than in the old lodge. Vacancies in York Creek Lodge fill quickly, as it is the only lodge in Crowsnest Pass, she says.

The building will sport glassed-in patios with spectacular year-round views for the enjoyment of residents.

It will also have air conditioning, unlike the current lodge, better lighting and Internet access in every room. There will be no carpeting in the new building, which will make it easier to clean.

For the environmentally conscious, triple-glass windows will save heat and the parking lot will feature native plants and shrubbery.

The Alberta government chose a new build over renovations after consulting with architects, who evaluated the feasibility of the options, Joanne says.

It wasn’t possible to widen the hallways in the existing building. The additional width is needed for seniors in walkers and wheelchairs.

A bidding process will determine who will build the lodge, and the cost of the project will be determined when the plans are finalized. The municipality will donate the land, with space available in Coleman.

The exact location of the new lodge will be announced later.

Pregnancy and vision Submitted by Rocky Mountain Optometry Pregnancy can cause various changes to a woman’s vision. These changes can be mild to significant, temporary or permanent.

The changes give optometrists clues about systemic health concerns associated with pregnancy, specifically gestation diabetes.

A common symptom that pregnant women report is blurred vision.

This may be related to actual prescription change. We have seen patients that had never had glasses prior to their pregnancy suddenly feel uncomfortable driving.

One patient described having her prescription improve significantly and remain stable after each child. She was even considering having more children!

Prescription changes typically do return to normal in the year following pregnancy, however.

Blurred vision may also be a result of dry eyes. Hormonal changes can affect tear production and this can usually be managed well with artificial tears.

Diabetes, including gestational diabetes, can cause temporary blurring of vision or permanent retinal changes.

That being said, it is likely more important that elevated blood sugars can affect the general health of the baby and mother.

As with any form of diabetes, monitoring the health of the retina can give us insight into the health of the circulatory system.

There is no other way to visualize our smallest blood vessels than through the eyes. Seeing retinal changes is our signal that better blood sugar control is needed.

Our eyes can be a window into our general health, even when we are talking about pregnancy.

Coffee and safety awareness served up at drive-thru

By Brad Quarin There may be no better way to reach the masses than to intercept a coffee lineup.

Staff of the bus company First Student were at Tim Hortons during School Bus Safety Awareness Month, declared in Pincher Creek in April, to promote responsible driving around buses.

For School Bus Safety Day, bus drivers handed out coffee sleeves, with their safety message, to patrons at the drive-thru.

“The response has been really good,” said Sharon Roberts, First Student location manager.

“People appreciate the fact that we’re getting the message out there, and they can’t believe that people pass school buses with their lights flashing.”

On a Friday morning, Tim Hortons sees about 300 vehicles pass through, making for a busy start to the day for these bus drivers.

They were back there during lunchtime, another busy period and the perfect time to pass along their message: Reds Flashing — No Passing.

Hill Spring showcases quilts

By Lois Johnston An array of colours and patterns, sizes and shapes greeted visitors to Hill Spring’s annual quilt show on April 19.

Featuring the talent of quilters from as far as Okotoks and Calgary, and as close as Glenwood and Hill Spring, the show included items for competition, items submitted simply for display, and quilts made specifically to be sold.

The range of categories in the competition added to the contrast in the exhibits. There were categories for scrap quilts, for appliqué quilts, for baby quilts, for those that were pieced and for those that were hand-quilted.

The work of several younger quilters was displayed in the under-13 category, while the talent of the elderly could be found in almost all categories. Mrs. Ellen Prince won first place with her beautiful rope and butterfly quilt, and 91-year-old Lester Schmidt placed third with his quilted map of Canada.

One unique quilt was composed of men’s ties and made by Kelsey Gibb as a Christmas gift to her husband. Prior to their marriage, he had collected these ties when he was in Chicago on his mission.

A 110-year-old quilt was part of the “for display” section. This quilt was originally done by Caroline Jensen, great-grandmother to some of Hill Spring’s present-day quilters. This quilt has been documented by the Royal Albert Museum.

Hill Spring’s quilting club goes by the name of Bide A Wee Quilts. President Lori Merrill explained that they took their name from a former quilting group in Hill Spring, in existence in 1928 and operating for over 46 years.

The quilters meet regularly in the community centre. When the centre was renovated recently, a room was designated for the quilters, enabling them to purchase and store a quilting machine.

It is evident that Bide A Wee is a well-run and well-appreciated club by the quality of the quilts on display and the number of visitors enjoying the exhibit.

BUDDY BENCHES, continued from page 21 In the end, Jackson raised just over $200, but he still had a long way to go to achieve his goal of bringing a Buddy Bench to his school.

Meanwhile, principal Elaine Garner had also been exploring the possibility of installing a Buddy Bench at Horace Allen School, which teaches students from kindergarten to Grade 3.

“I had heard about Buddy Benches towards the end of the school year last year, so it was something I wanted to look into this year,” Elaine says.

“And then Jackson and his mom contacted me and things just started coming together.”

Once word of the project got out, two of Jackson’s fellow students — Claira and Adley Murray, ages

nine and six — came forward, along with their family, to donate two benches.

Two other Grade 3 students, Ryleigh and Jorga Oberholtzer, enlisted their dad, Chad Oberholtzer of Grumpy’s Greenhouse, to donate his time to install the benches.

“A lot of people have put their brains together to make this happen for our school,” Elaine says. “It’s become a big community project.”

A series of three presentations took place at Horace Allen School on April 25 to 27.

Jackson, Claira and Adley not only explained to their fellow students the purpose of the two new Buddy Benches, but also performed skits to enact different scenarios in which the benches could be used.

Scenarios ranged from a new student not knowing anyone at the school to a girl whose friends didn’t want to play with her.

The students also discussed reasons not to use the Buddy Bench. Answers ranged from “resting” to “using it as a pretend fort” or “for backflips” — “All great answers,” Elaine told the students with a smile.

The Buddy Benches will be installed in early to mid May, and Elaine says the benches will have special signs so that students will remember what they are for.

“It’s very important that all of the students in our school know about them,” she says.

“They’re going to be a great thing to have in our playground. Recess should be happy and fun. No one should feel sad or lonely.”

Huddlestun seniors news

By Joyce McFarland Daffodils, dandelions and people with aching backs are in the gardens, and Harley Davidsons are on the hardtop. Spring has sprung.

After a general meeting, when doubts were put to bed, a new board was elected, so the Huddlestun Centre is now on an even keel. Until the annual meeting in January 2017, the board members are: president Joe LeBlanc, vice-president Leo Robbins, treasurer Jack Rumsey, secretary Kim Fukumoto and public relations member Joyce McFarland.

Board meetings will be held on the sixth of every month at 10 a.m.

When the sixth falls on a weekend, the meeting will be held on the following Monday.

The board has already held a quick meeting to confirm house rules and signing authority. One motion worthy of note was passed at this time: in short, the board meetings will be for board members only.

Members who have reason to make a presentation to the board are invited to attend a board meeting with one spokesperson and a written draft, having first notified the president so that the item can be put on the agenda for the following meeting.

The president will be happy — yes, eager — to hear your concerns or questions. His cellphone number is 403-632-5285. However, he did mention that he is kinda grouchy before 9 a.m. and kinda worse for wear by 9 p.m., so judge accordingly.

We are lucky to have Carol VanGilder at 403-627-5181 and Michele Fraser, who have volunteered to compile a list of phone numbers and emails and to be an ad hoc phoning committee. Communication has been sadly lacking recently and these two ladies need your help to make current information a priority.

New ideas for programs are high on the list and we are looking for input from all our members. We have talked briefly about bus trips, either mystery drives or planned destinations for an afternoon during the summer. However, we know that five people on a 14-passenger bus is not going to fly, so registration and prepayment for a full bus would have to be a commitment. The executive is willing to give it a try.

Using his own insight and initiative, Hugh Dunham, one of our newest members, returned from the Skagit Valley Tulip Festival in Washington recently with photographs of the tulips on show. He has enlarged and framed his pictures of some of the most unusual blooms and they are on the wall at the centre for your interest and enjoyment. Thank you, Hugh.

The May calendar is ready for you to pick up at the centre. All the regular programs are good to go, and special events are as follows: Board meeting at 10 a.m. this Friday, May 6. Crib tournament on May 14; registration at 9:30 a.m., play at 10 a.m., lunch at noon ($12 per person) and a 50-50 draw. General meeting on May 27 at 10 a.m. Bingo on the same day at 1:30 p.m. George will be calling the numbers via the TV, and snacks will be served courtesy of the Pincher Creek Co-op. Virginia will be selling 50-50 tickets.

Larry Richard Frith 1943 – 2016 Larry Richard Frith, 72 years, passed away quietly on April 23, 2016, at his Twin Butte home with his family by his side.

Larry was born in Prince Albert, Sask., and received his B.Sc. in agriculture from the University of Saskatchewan in 1966. He came to southern Alberta through his work with Indian Affairs on the Kainai and Pikanii reserves as economic development officer, and settled in Twin Butte in 1971, where he raised his family.

He was a rancher, environmentalist and committed steward of the land, as reflected through his involvement in the Waterton Biosphere Association (UNESCO), the Castle Crown Wilderness Coalition, Producers of the Diamond Willow Range, and the Chinook Land Users Association.

He delighted in playing banjo, oil painting, reading voraciously and studying local archeology and natural history. His sense of humour, ability to listen and genuine kindness will be greatly missed.

Left to mourn Larry’s passing are his loving wife, Jan Frith; daughters Ria Frith, Erin Frith and Lisa (Gregory) Betts; grandchildren Jasper and Mackenzie Betts; and siblings Eldean Hamel, Edwin Frith, Wendy (Carol Putnam) Frith, Patrick (Connie) Frith, Russell (Joanne Blythe) Frith, and Kathy (Mike) Dvorak.

He was predeceased by his father, Raymond Frith; mother, Edna Frith; brother Rodney Frith; brother-in-law Tom Hamel; and sister-in-law Joan Frith.

Special thanks to the home-care, palliative, and acute-care teams at the Pincher Creek Health Centre. Thank you also to the staff at the Jack Ady Cancer Centre in Lethbridge.

We rely on technology more and more to keep in touch with our family, friends and colleagues with a click of a button. But what happens in the event of a major emergency? Suddenly these tools can become vital in helping you and your family deal, get in touch and stay informed.

Here are some tips on the use of technology in an emergency: — If possible, use non-voice channels like text messaging, email or social media.

These use less bandwidth than voice communications and may work even when phone service doesn’t.

— If you must use a phone, keep your conversation brief and convey only vital information to emergency personnel and family. This will also conserve your phone’s battery.

— Unable to complete a call? Wait 10 seconds before redialing, to help reduce

network congestion. Cordless phones rely on electricity and will not work during a power outage. If you have a landline, keep at least one corded phone in your home.

— Keep extra batteries or a charger for your mobile device in your emergency kit. Consider getting a solar-powered, crank or vehicle phone charger. If you don’t have a cellphone, keep a prepaid phone card in your emergency kit.

— Keep your contacts up to date on your phone, email and other channels.

This will make it easier to reach important contacts such as friends, family, neighbours, schools and insurance agents.

Town hall gathering on Day of Mourning Town staff members, the mayor and councillors, as well as residents, attended Pincher Creek’s Day of Mourning ceremony on Thursday. The event remembers Canadians who have died or suffered injury while on the job. Coun. Races and games draw athletes to town

By Brad Quarin Pincher Creek’s mud-and-obstacle race, the Wild Rose Rough Runner, is returning for a second year, establishing it as an annual event.

Registration is open now for the race on May 28, which comes courtesy of CrossFit Pincher Creek.

“We’re making it bigger and a little more official than last year,” says Alecia Williams, a CrossFit personal trainer.

“What we’re really trying to build is a community event.”

CrossFit envisions growing the race into something that can attract people from other communities to the area and get more youth outdoors.

“It’s more about having an active and outside event,” Alecia says. “We have this beautiful, beautiful place that we live [in].”

The race offers four- and eightkilometre courses to runners of all ages.

The latter course is larger than the sixkilometre race last year.

This year, 30 per cent of the proceeds

from the race will support an athletic development program being launched by Alecia.

The program will be aimed at students in grades 10 to 12, and will take the form of an eight-week course in July, she says.

It will help athletes in different sports to develop a complete skills set and learn how to train for their sports.

The program isn’t specific to a single sport. As Alecia explains, it can be beneficial to get different athletes together and show them what other sports have to offer.

Registration for the Wild Rose Rough Runner is open until May 21, and costs $60 for adults and $20 for children.

Those interested can register at www.crossfitpinchercreek.com and pay either online or at CrossFit Pincher Creek.

The local CrossFit also had success bringing people from other communities to town for the Festivus Games, held in mid April.

Named for the holiday Festivus

popularized by the TV series Seinfeld, the games echo the holiday in its “feats of strength.” Festivus Games are held in gyms around the world in April and October.

CrossFit owner Paula Szaroz says Pincher Creek’s second Festivus Games in April was “awesome,” attracting more people than the first in October.

Forty-one athletes from Pincher Creek, Lethbridge, Medicine Hat, Calgary, Fernie, Brooks and Cochrane participated. There were eight gyms represented and ages ranged from 12 to 59.

Paula believes this increased participation is testimony to spreading the word about how fun the challenge is. It also drew more attention to the small-town gym.

The masters-level athletes particularly impressed her. She saw them work hard like everyone else, despite being older.

She was also impressed by the overall improvement of local athletes, in community spirit and performance.

One man, Mark Harris from Brooks, competed in Festivus one year to the day after his heart attack.

“He did great,” achieving a personal record in the thruster lift, Paula says.
