Local Lions club assists Lethbridge CNIB

By Brad Quarin The CNIB in Lethbridge, which offers assistance to people with visual impairments, recently found support from the Pincher Cowley Roaring Lions.

The local group presented the CNIB with a donation of $300. Support from local Lions clubs makes the work of the CNIB easier, says Bob Short, a CNIB representative.

In this case, the $300 will be used to purchase white canes, which are provided for free to visually impaired clients in communities around Lethbridge.

Clients use their canes to discover what’s around them, and the white colour indicates

to others that the client is visually impaired, says Susan Vogelaar, a Pincher Cowley Roaring Lions member.

She explains that the group made this donation because supporting the blind is a Lions club mandate. She also notes that calls for help to the Pincher Creek support group For Sight have increased recently.

The money was raised from casinos and through the club’s membership fees.

Bob says this donation is very valuable, and is enough to buy 17 or 18 canes. He notes that while a client receives the first cane for free, that client is responsible for replacing any lost or broken canes. He feels this is a somewhat

unique program.

Bob’s recent visit to Pincher Creek was a learning experience for locals as they were made aware of new services available to the visually impaired, Susan says. During a For Sight meeting, Bob demonstrated some of the equipment.

One item local people learned about was the Clearview Speech machine. The client places a written article under a screen, and an automated voice reads it.

These products are available by registering through the CNIB in Lethbridge. Subsidies are offered on some of the equipment.

Lundbreck volunteer honoured for community-building

By Brad Quarin Although Lee Farough hasn’t been volunteering much recently, his contributions to living in Lundbreck are well recognized in the hamlet.

The Lundbreck Citizens Council named him the community’s Citizen of the Year during National Volunteer Week.

“I was really touched. I didn’t expect it, anyway,” he says. “Thanks to all the people who worked beside me, who made things possible.”

Currently, Lee is facing some medical issues that are causing weight loss and have slowed down his volunteering, says his friend, Barb Lenz. He is 77.

He wasn’t able to attend the volunteer luncheon where the awards were announced, but received a call from Peggy Dingreville afterwards, telling him she had something for him.

It was the plaque for Citizen of the Year.

Lou Niven, a Windsor Heritage Drop-In Centre board member, also delivered plants from the luncheon to him.

“He’s done a lot of good for the community,” says Weldon Vickers, who was named Lundbreck’s Senior Citizen of the Year. He describes Lee as “a really nice guy.”

Barb also feels the award was really appropriate. “Wherever they needed somebody, Lee was there,” she says. She calls him an “outgoing person.”

He is originally from Manitoba, and arrived at Lundbreck in 1987 for a job at the Burmis weigh scales where he weighed trucks, ensur-

ing they were roadworthy. He enjoyed being of service to the trucking industry.

After retiring, he took an active role in building the hamlet — literally.

He built a number of houses in Lundbreck, including one across from the school and another where he currently lives. He learned the craft with help from a carpenter in Blairmore.

Lee’s volunteer work goes back to his arrival in Lundbreck. The safety of the community interested him, so he began working for Citizens on Patrol.

Walking through the hamlet, he would check doors to ensure they were locked and would notify the RCMP and the building owners if they weren’t.

The Lundbreck Citizens Council was another good fit, since Lee wanted to help promote community events.

Barb recalls Lee was known for peeling many potatoes for dinners during Citizens Council events, and setting up tables for breakfasts during Cornfest.

One of Lee’s contributions that Weldon particularly remembers is the installation of an underground watering system for the Lundbreck Gardeners.

The system has been very beneficial to the group, which is dedicated to the beautification of Lundbreck.

It efficiently waters the hamlet’s flowers and plants, making it as simple as turning the tap on and walking away, Lee says.

Discover the tales of Kootenai Brown Pioneer Village

By Brad Quarin There’s no better time to learn more of the tales of Pincher Creek’s past than at the 50th anniversary of the Pincher Creek and District Historical Society.

The society is celebrating its birthday with the launch of a new book that explores the histories of the buildings preserved at its museum, Kootenai Brown Pioneer Village.

The authors of Tales of the Kootenai Brown Pioneer Village will be at KBPV at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, ready to sign copies as the book goes up for sale.

“It’s a good history, both in text and in pictures,” says KBPV curator Farley Wuth. He contributed the writing, which accompanies Jessica Maunsell’s photos of the buildings, while Gord Tolton did the editing.

There certainly was a wealth of material to work with, and something to celebrate.

“That’s quite an accomplishment, to have an historical society around for 50 years, collecting artifacts and preserving local history,” Farley

says.

Gord adds that 50 years is a particularly long time for rural museums. “And it’s continued to be a sustaining and rapidly expanding museum,” he says.

KBPV was established with the arrival of the log home of John George (Kootenai) Brown in 1970. The Father Lacombe Hermitage was another important early attraction.

“It’s mushroomed from there,” Gord says.

As a project to celebrate the golden anniversary of a society that’s done so much, the current members chose to publish a coffeetable book.

In 160 pages, the book presents Jessica’s colour photos with stories of the buildings that can be seen at KBPV. Every building has a section, and nearly all of the exhibits are covered in a page or section.

The text aims to convey each building’s significance to the area, province and country.

But given that KBPV is always changing, the authors realized the book wouldn’t be able to cover buildings added between its writing and publication.

In fact, the book made Gord realize that that’s a good thing.

“A good museum, if it wants to stay vital and if it wants to stay relevant to its community, should never really be finished,” he says.

“When visitors come here, they will see a very good museum, don’t get me wrong…. But they’re always going to see that we’re always thinking, we’re always moving ahead, and we’re always moving on.”

The book launch will consist of an open house with refreshments, along with “a silent movie” made by contributor Pauline Breeze, which features Jessica’s photos.

The book itself will sell at KBPV’s Country Store for $24.95. Proceeds will go toward the support of the museum, so the historical society can continue its good works.

Symphony hosting spring concerts

By Erin Fairhurst The Crowsnest Pass Symphony Orchestra has spent the last several months fine-tuning for its upcoming spring concert.

Residents of both Crowsnest Pass and Pincher Creek will be delighted to hear that the orchestra will be performing two shows, one in Crowsnest Pass on May 18 and one in Pincher Creek on May 19.

A variety of music will be showcased, and conductor Debbie Goldstein says audience members will be treated to a range of pieces all the way from baroque to classical to contemporary.

In addition to the symphony, the concert will feature performances from a piano trio comprised of Debbie on cello, James Skierka on violin and Tammy Griesbrecht on piano, as well as the brash brass ensemble, the Big Little Band.

Everyone is welcome to attend the concert and to join in on this communal celebration of a long history of Crowsnest Pass and Pincher Creek making music together.

“About half the orchestra is made up of people from Pincher Creek,” says Debbie.

It’s one of Canada’s longest running amateur orchestras, having begun back in 1952.

This is Debbie’s first time conducting the spring concert. Earlier this year, she was “passed the baton” by longtime conductor Jerry Lonsbury.

But audience members can still look forward not just to seeing Mr. Lonsbury at the concert, but to hearing him as well — because this year he’ll be playing keyboard.

“It’s going to be a lot of fun and thoroughly enjoyable,” Debbie says.

“I hope we see a big turnout.”

Tickets for the concert are $10 per person or $20 per family, and can be purchased at the door.

The Crowsnest Pass concert will take place on May 18 at 7 p.m at Horace Allen School in Coleman.

The Pincher Creek concert will be held at First Baptist Church, located at 637 Charlotte St., on May 19 at 7 p.m.

My Little Corner Chaos.

This is the descriptor I’ve heard most as people I know describe the situation at and around Fort McMurray.

Last Tuesday we were without Internet service for most of the day in our office. It wasn’t until after the workday was finished that I saw the first of an onslaught of video footage of the wildfire up north.

Watching the fire rampage through the city and threaten vehicles daring to escape the inferno was both terrifying and heartbreaking.

Like most, my thoughts went immediately to people I care about who were potentially in danger.

The loss of two young lives on the evacuation journey is tragic. That no others died is amazing.

That children were born in the midst of this chaos is affirmation that life goes on, even in the worst of circumstances.

I was grateful to connect with three friends who were in or around Fort McMurray and learn they were safe. Their experiences are very different. They all speak of chaos and all feel a strong bond with the city their livelihoods has been based on for many years.

They are down, but they are not out. They believe the hearts of the people who make up the city will be a key factoring to getting it back on its feet.

Fighting the fires are 1,547 firefighters, 121 helicopters, 194 pieces of heavy equipment and 28 air tankers The Fort McMurray wildfire covers about 204,000 hectares and is expected to grow by Tuesday.

Support for displaced Fort McMurray residents is pouring in from across the nation and from around the world. In a time when much of the global economy is suffering, people are not hesitating to give what they can and to do what they can.

Monday afternoon saw Legion members, staff, volunteers and even an evacuee working together to load community donations. A loaded semi-trailer will head north from Pincher Creek this week with necessities that will make a difference.

As we become aware of local groups organizing fundraising efforts we will continue to share information on our Facebook page.

Everyone wants to help in some way. Last weekend a group of kids raised over $100, which they donated to the Pincher Creek Legion effort.

Most people I know have a connection to Fort McMurray and this has a positive impact on the reaction to the plight of the city’s people.

All across the country, people know someone who does work or who has worked in the oilsands.

The oil companies have housed and fed thousands of evacuees over the past week. No one is being turned away.

Many are politicizing the disaster but, most are choosing not to engage in that battle.

Seeing photos of Brian Jean connecting with people on an intimate level – not as a politician but as a neighbour enduring a shared hell – has earned him personal respect. I can’t imagine myself doing the same if I was wearing his shoes.

All around us, people are doing good.

Some, like my friend Erle Deschene of Spruce Grove, find themselves doing more than they knew they were capable of.

Erle is the sort of guy you don’t easily forget. Since I met him in high school, I’ve known him to speak his mind and to always stand behind his family and friends. He describes himself as a bit of a “hardass.”

He’s organized ball tournaments and events, but never imagined himself in charge of an evacuation effort. And, it all happened by accident.

Ryan Byers was heading to Anzac early Wednesday morning and let Erle know of his plan to take a trailer loaded with supplies. The two men and their kids met at SuperStore and “shopped hard.”

The kids were sent in different directions to gather things for kids of their own age. With their personal

To the people of Fort McMurray My family and I live in Pincher Creek but have lots of family affected by the Fort McMurray wildfire. My parents recently left to go visit my family at their camp (Bonnyville), where they are currently staying.

Between 1,200 and 1,750 meals have been dished out daily from the hotel’s kitchen with the help of caterers and donations. Everyone is offered a meal, no matter what time of day or night they roll in.

Erle and Ryan are running mostly on adrenaline.

Between them they’ve caught only about 12 hours of shuteye since the effort began. They offer more than food an accommodation, they are offering their hearts while the stories of others break their own.

During our conversation, Erle’s end of the line became quiet. I waited. After a pause he spoke of a family who arrived at night when the rooms were full.

Aware that the temperature was to drop near zero overnight, Erle found bedding and blankets. It was the best he could do for them.

He has given his best to each evacuee who has walked in his door, and I couldn’t be more proud of my friend today.

When we spoke Monday evening, he was taking some downtime, and looks forward to accompanying his son to a volleyball tournament in Winnipeg later in the week.

He’ll step down from his post as evacuee host and back to his role as family man. Many people had the most positive expereicne possible thanks to his efforts. #AlbertaStrong

Crowsnest Pass artists open their studios for Mother’s Day The inaugural Artists Studio Tour, organized by local artists in conjunction with the Crowsnest Pass Allied Arts Association, featured an array of local talent and a rare glimpse into the workspaces of the artists themselves. A second tour will be hosted July 30 and 31.

Communities in Bloom invites you to embrace yellow

By Brad Quarin Pincher Creek residents will want to spiff up their residences, storefronts and streets as the town gets ready to compete on a world stage in categories such as tidiness, floral displays, environmental action and heritage conservation.

The town has entered the Communities in Bloom International Challenge for the first time this year, and will be inspected by judges in July.

“Winning’s always great, but it’s more about community enthusiasm and support for beautification,” says Diane Burt Stuckey, director of community services and a member of Pincher Creek’s Communities in Bloom group.

The committee serves as a liaison between the different community groups to encourage beautification.

“It’s nice to know that we’re really doing best practices, compared to other communities,” she says.

The plunge into internationals comes after the town won the class of champions (small) category in the national competition last year.

When towns win at the national level, they

have the option of undergoing non-competitive evaluation, sitting out a year or competing in class of champions at the international level.

Pincher Creek previously won at the national level in Communities in Bloom in 2009 so they already knew that sitting out for a year can create more work later, as the group struggles to remember community projects from over a year ago.

They also knew that non-competitive evaluation takes as much work as competing.

The local Communities in Bloom group opted for internationals after encouragement by last year’s judges, Jerry Teahen and Lorraine Hunter from Ontario.

Diane adds they wanted to continue “the Communities in Bloom momentum.”

To get ready for the international challenge, the Communities in Bloom group is encouraging tidiness. The town is in support of this challenge and strongly promoted the recent Pitch-In Week.

Citizens can still help immensely by picking up litter, sweeping cigarette butts, trimming plants, cutting weeds and planting flowers.

Regarding flowers, local Communities in Bloom members thought the campaign could benefit from having a colour of the year. They chose yellow, finding it to be “a nice, cheery colour,” she says.

There are also many different annual and perennial flowers available in yellow, such as ganzania, nemesia, begonia, day lily and coneflower, which are listed in their brochure. Several are “pollinator friendly” for bees and not too vulnerable to deer.

Businesses can do their part, too. Pincher Creek and District Chamber of Commerce is holding another Businesses in Bloom competition this year, with chamber judges inspecting businesses from July 9 to 11.

Dino Indoor Challenge results Submitted by Ritch Braun Three Passtrak athletes competed in eight events at the last indoor track meet of the season, held April 30 in Calgary.

Sawyer Sawatzky had three races in the 10-year-old boys category.

He ran the 60 metres in 11.55 seconds for a sixth-place finish. His next race was the 150 metres, where he finished fifth in 29.74 seconds.

Sawyer’s final race of the day was the 800 metres. He earned the honour of being Passtrak’s top athlete of the meet when he slashed 13 seconds off his previous best time by completing the race in three minutes 30.45 seconds for a third-place finish.

Jack Bailey became a full-fledged Passtrak athlete by participating in his first official track meet. Jack had three races in the 11-year-old boys group. His 60-metre time was 11.70 seconds for fifth place. His 150-metre time was 31.33 seconds, which earned him third place. He finished the 800 metres in second place by completing the distance in three minutes 42.69 seconds.

Ethan Richards showed great consistency in both his races. He recorded his second-fastest 60-metre time ever, in 7.52 seconds, for first place in the 16- and 17-year-old boys division. He then produced his second-fastest 200-metre time as well, with a 24.80-second effort for another first-place finish.

Passtrak will now switch to the traditional outdoor track and field season, and the first meet takes place in Calgary this weekend.

This year, the Communities in Bloom judges will be Evelyn Alemanni and Gaétan Deschênes. Evelyn is a writer and award-winning gardener from California, while Gaétan is a Radio-Canada journalist from Quebec, with an interest in gardening and horticulture.

Neither judge has inspected Pincher Creek before, but Diane says they sound well qualified.

While the contest is international, most of the competitors are Canadian.

Killarney-Turtle Mountain has a population of 3,233 in southwest Manitoba, while Sun Rivers Resort Community is found between Mount Peter and Mount Paul in British Columbia.

Pré-Saint-Didier, Aosta Valley, is an Italian village of 959 people, and Sveti Martin na Muri is a municipality of 2,509 people in the valleys of Croatia.

These communities may not be very familiar to most people, but Diane recalls Sun Rivers Resort mentioned at last year’s ceremony.

It’s interesting to consider that Pincher Creek is competing against towns in Croatia and Italy, and she has noticed that people from foreign countries feel honoured to be part of Communities in Bloom.

The judges will arrive in Pincher Creek on July 24 and stay until July 26, giving Pincher Creek some time to prepare.

Community supports Dragon sports

By Brad Quarin In the Middle Ages, anyone who was invited to dine with dragons would have been a bit fearful about what was on the menu.

But at St. Michael’s School in Pincher Creek, it turned out that Dining With Dragons was an enjoyable experience for all.

Dining with Dragons was actually a spaghetti dinner, held by the school in mid April. And this renamed event raised an astonishing $13,405 for the school.

Success sprang “from our local community being so generous with their donations,” says teacher Lori Jo Ettenhofer.

Many businesses and people made donations that went up for live and silent auctions, and the crowd actively competed for these items.

Lori Jo notes that a steak dinner sold for $1,000 and a cake sold for

$400 at the live auction. Over 200 people attended.

Credit also belongs to volunteers, with student athletes setting up, serving food, acting as masters of ceremonies and cleaning after the event. Parents cooked the food, which was delicious, according to Lori Jo. The idea for the name derived from the sports teams, the Dragons.

This term was widened so that “dragons” included all the students, staff, parents and alumni of St. Michael’s School.

It was the first spaghetti dinner held by the school in three years, and it raised a record amount, exceeding expectations.

Lori Jo explains that the money raised will support a makeover to the school gym, which will undergo renovations and see new items and phys-ed equipment purchased.

Town requests your input on housing Submitted by the Town of Pincher Creek The Town of Pincher Creek has commenced a housing needs assessment update and is reaching out to the community for input via survey.

The survey is needed to assist in identifying current and emerging housing challenges in Pincher Creek. The results will be used for future development decisions and funding allocations.

“This is the chance for the residents of Pincher Creek to have direct input into results,” says Mayor Don Anderberg.

The town is asking all residents of all income levels and housing status to complete the survey. A wide range of residents will provide a clearer picture of the overall housing situation in our community.

In January 2010, the town completed an assessment of affordable housing needs. That assessment was based on a statistical analysis of regional population and demographic statistics, and an analysis of housing affordability, adequacy, suitability and availability.

The current housing needs assessment update will identify any changes that have occurred since the 2010 assessment, focusing on specific housing needs for Pincher Creek, including updated demographics.

Additionally, the study will include an overview of the impact of the housing environment as it relates to local employment and staffing challenges.

This comprehensive analysis will provide

current information necessary for the development of a Pincher Creek community housing business plan.

Address any questions visitors may have and provide additional interpretation of exhibits when appropriate. Students collect plastic bags to reuse and recycle

By Brad Quarin Each year, over one billion plastic bags are distributed throughout Canada, according to the Recycling Council of Ontario and Walmart.

These organizations sponsor the Plastic Bag Grab, an effort to collect as many of the bags as possible for reuse or recycling. Horace Allen School took on the challenge this year, and gathered 5,750 bags in Crowsnest Pass.

“Pretty amazing, eh?” asks teacher Lesley Margetak.

She says the school registered 230 children to participate in the challenge, and they were on the hunt for a week in late April, finishing on Earth Day. “The kids were pretty excited once they caught on and realized what we were doing,” she says.

HAS teachers also put word of the project on social media, resulting in community members turning in more bags to the school.

The challenge was supported by the HAS Eco Club, which Lesley explains is made up of two students from each classroom.

The 24 children meet every two

weeks at lunchtime to discuss ways to help the environment. The group previously held a used toy exchange.

In the Plastic Bag Grab Challenge, HAS competed against other elementary schools across Canada to collect the most bags. The top three winners could win prizes of $1,000 to $3,000.

While Lesley doesn’t expect to win, the prize money would support other environmentally friendly projects such as “litterless lunches” with reusable lunch bags, or starting a class garden — both suggestions coming from the Eco Club.

Inspired by the book The One and Only Ivan, which the students read for Family Literacy Day in January, the students are also considering a project to help gorillas.

By recycling cellphone parts, HAS students could reduce the need for opening new colton mines.

Colton is a mineral used to produce cell phones. Mining for colton leads to deforestation in western Africa, and deforestation is threatening gorilla populations.

Results from the Plastic Bag Grab Challenge will be announced in June.
