Mr. Taylor says the idea was conceived locally and fine-tuned over two years. The aim was to provide students with a “bridge” between high school and college life.

Twenty-eight St. Michael’s and MHHS students not only studied at the college, but lived in residence, made their own meals, used public transportation and met with academic advisors. The courses taken were interior design, digital communications, and justice and public safety.

The experiment proved to be a great success, with Mr. Taylor feeling the students fared “amazingly well.”

The students started with some guidance and were then given more responsibility — and it worked. They were punctual in attending courses and the instructors were pleased with their efforts.

“We got to learn a lot of stuff that wasn’t really offered here at school,” says Taylor Ewing, an MHHS student. She took the media course in Lethbridge, learning about photography, TV and radio.

St. Michael’s student Rayanne Mackelborg designed a 3D model of a house in the interior design course.

MHHS student Parker Starzyk was pleased with a later start time for morning classes but Taylor says it was still hard getting up because of late nights.

Parker was also surprised how much independence college instructors give students.

Living in residence was also an adjustment. Each student had a room in a townhouse.

St. Michael’s student Davina Smith, who enrolled in public safety, joked that it was easy not having to listen to their moms, but Sonny Smith says fending for himself was different.

Despite Parker’s meal plan, the students in her townhouse ran out of food on the second day. At one point, Davina says, all her townhouse had was lettuce.

MHHS students Micah Fox and Jacoby Provost found the toughest part was being without a TV and they seriously considered buying one.

All regular struggles in post-secondary life.

To organizer Greg Freer, another highlight of Experiential Learning Week was the “extreme trailer makeover,” which he says went over well with the students.

Mr. Freer had previously renovated a trailer, so he knows there is plenty of demand for them. As a result, he suggested it as a special course.

On the first day, a student teacher fell through the trailer floor. Flooring was quickly added to the list of needed renovations, along with reframing the wall and fixing the collapsing ceiling.

The task had relevance to those interested in welding, wiring, painting and other trades. There has already been some interest in buying the trailer.

A barbecue will be held on Thursday for board members, donors and Livingstone Range School Division staff, and the students’ trailer will be on display.

This will be another opportunity to show off the wide range of talents among Pincher Creek teens.

Memory of pioneer artist will be saved for posterity

By Brad Quarin If you’re facing challenges and searching for courage, there may be something to learn from the life and works of a historic artist who found solace in our own backyard.

Rev. Joyce Sasse will lead a church service at Heritage Acres Farm Museum at 7 p.m. on May 26, dedicated to “walking in the footsteps of pioneer artist Annora Brown.”

The service will kick off a summer of celebrating the often forgotten Fort Macleod artist, who sketched and painted the plants and animals of Waterton from the 1930s to 1960s. The aim is to once again make her works accessible to the public.

“She didn’t have family, and so when she died, there was nobody to carry on her work,” Joyce says.

“Nobody’s carrying this on, and we’ll lose it, and so one of my missions in life is to reactivate this.”

Many people Joyce has talked to have never heard of Annora Brown, but Joyce maintains she was an important artist. Joyce was a student in Waterton when she first learned of Annora’s work. She went to look at the display of paintings nearly every evening.

“She’s the one that brought [the] attention of Canada and the world to this area,” Joyce says.

Annora was painting Waterton Lakes National Park while other artists were painting Ontario and British Columbia.

In a time when settlers planned to cultivate the land, she stood up for the wildflowers and insisted they weren’t weeds, Joyce says.

“She was the ultimate conservationist.”

Joyce also credits her with pioneering the documentation of the culture and traditions of the Piikani people, seeking to understand who they really were while others relied on noble-savage archetypes.

Annora experienced much adversity in her life. Like everyone else, she faced the Great Depression and the drought. In addition, she

cared for her parents in an age with no pensions or health-care coverage.

She still managed to find time to paint and write, finding subjects in grain elevators, fences and mountains. Annora passed away in 1987.

The Heritage Acres service will feature three or four of her paintings, and Joyce recommends it for “anybody who really can appreciate the landscape and its people.”

The location will be particularly fitting since the farm museum is located where Annora painted, Joyce says. Porcupine Hills was a major area in her work, along with Fort Macleod and numerous spots in Waterton.

Edison will be joined by his siblings, and parents Jenny and Bill, but says “everybody or anyone who wants to come can come.” In fact, the more the merrier.

“The main thing is to keep building awareness,” says Bill. “That’s the biggest reason we do it.”

“It’s just really nice when everyone comes together,” adds Jenny. “It’s always a lot of fun.”

The Wilmot kids are all looking forward to the walk, for various reasons. Edison has specially requested bubble blowers for all of the kids in attendance, and Finley is excited to walk the whole thing all on his own.

As for Libbey, she’s looking forward to a day outside with her friends and family, but mainly: “I’m looking forward to finding a cure.”

About 70 communities across Canada are hosting their own versions of the CARSTAR Walk to Make Cystic Fibrosis History. Money raised will be used for research toward eliminating the disease, and for providing a high level of care for CF patients.

My Little Corner

While wandering through the shops in Waterton on Sunday afternoon, a large sign caught my attention.

“If you do what you love, you’ll never work a day in your life” were the words emblazoned on the wall hanging. I’m considering making a return visit — with wallet in hand this time — to add this piece to the art on my office wall.

Not everyone has the opportunity to do what they love and that’s a sad thing. Often it’s simply the reality of earning enough to support a family, or the lifestyle one desires, that leads people away from their dreams.

Monday is the busiest day of the week at our office. Final pages of the paper are created, proofread and updated to be sent off to the printer.

At the same time, we may be waiting on approval of ads and making last-minute changes. Some Mondays are fairly calm, while others are more on the chaotic side. There’s no such thing as a dull day at the office.

In the end, we’re all here because we love what we do — even on the crazy days.

A friend who is working on a project sent a message my way Monday morning. She was struggling with late material and changes coming her way when she was already past deadline to have the project finished.

The message began with “I don't know how you do this every week, I want to kill everyone today.” It ended with “You are nuts lol.”

Elementary schools are becoming bear smart

By Brad Quarin Crowsnest Pass elementary schools are a little safer for both children and bears after the Crowsnest Conservation Society and the municipality helped install new bear-proof bins in April.

“I think it’s absolutely wonderful,” says Myrna Dembicki, assistant principal at Horace Allen School. She notes that bears have been seen near the Coleman school.

Two bins, containing compartments for both garbage and recycling, were installed at HAS and Isabelle Sellon School fields and playgrounds, says Elizabeth Anderson of the conservation society.

ISS previously had no bearproof bins, and the one at HAS wasn’t ideal, she says.

ones are sturdier, and more like the bear-proof bins you might find in a campground.

The cost of the project was nearly $5,000. A significant portion of this was covered by a TD Friends of the Environment Foundation grant, Elizabeth says. Municipal staff received and installed the bins.

The project was also in partnership with the University of Alberta, which sent grad student Annie Loosen to give presentations at both schools on May 16.

Annie is conducting a study of bear hairs in the area in order to gauge the bear population. She will use this occasion to provide general information on grizzlies and black bears to HAS and ISS students.

This is fitting since the bins are a protection against black bears as well as grizzlies.

COMMUNITY SERVICE, continued from page 7 “I’m very thankful for it, and it’s just crazy,” he says. Since recognition wasn’t what he was after when he started volunteering, he says the award won’t mark the end of his community service.

During the recognition ceremony, Mayor Blair Painter reported that Keynan’s volunteering began with shovelling snow on his neighbours’ driveways and walkways.

Keynan says he was about 12 when he started doing that. Seeing an elderly neighbour attempting to shovel his own driveway, Keynan drove his quad over and did the shovelling. This neighbour passed away last year.

Keynan’s mom, Irene, coached in the local skating club where he had previously been a member until he started to play hockey. Irene asked for his help with some of the kids so, after school, he would help set up skating stations and teach power skating.

The club holds annual carnivals. Anyone who attends will have noticed the special designs painted on the ice for these carnivals.

Keynan says he is often the one who designs the murals and helps with the painting. They use a special paint that can easily be removed after the show with the Zamboni.

It was admiration for his dad, Trent, that led Keynan to the junior firefighting program. Trent became captain of the Bellevue station in Crowsnest Pass Fire/Rescue.

The junior program is for ages 16 to 18, and has some limitations.

A junior firefighter can’t respond to calls during school hours and is not allowed to go into burning buildings. However, they can fight fires from the outside.

On Keynan’s 16th birthday, in February 2014, he was called for an interview for the program and passed his physical test.

That would have consequences exactly one year later, as he spent a rather sleepless 17th birthday busy with the fire service.

He did get a chance to celebrate his birthday with friends, enjoying pizza and cake.

However, after going to bed at 1 a.m., with only an hour of sleep, a call came in about a fire and he had to respond.

Then, at 3 a.m., a train derailed in Frank.

Keynan was out until noon, taking turns with other firefighters directing traffic in the aftermath of that derailment.

Since the other firefighters knew it was his birthday, they brought Tim Hortons coffee and sandwiches to celebrate, he says.

After that, he went out to teach staging, which he defines as placing firefighting equipment in the correct place.

Some might be grumpy about getting an hour of sleep, but Keynan fondly remembers the experience.

“I had lots of fun, even learning new things from the older guys, and of course it was always nice to have the coffee in the morning,” he says.

“Not too many people can say they celebrated their birthday with the fire department.”

Keynan did have a more relaxing 18th birthday.

Another memorable incident was the fire at the Bellevue Inn in January 2015. He was on the first truck to arrive on the scene and sprayed the fire while his dad was inside.

role models and new opportunities.

Keynan hatched the idea of using the junior program to show the children of 40 Assets what Crowsnest Pass Fire/Rescue does.

The partnership has since grown to foster public education, as the firefighters attend events and teach children things like how to use a fire extinguisher.

The firefighters have even played dodgeball and had relay races with the children.

As a firefighter, the wildfire in Fort McMurray is something to see unfold. “It’s crazy,” Keynan says.

He think it’s “awesome” that many firefighters have gone to Fort McMurray to fight the blaze, but notes that firefighters are still needed to stay and keep an eye on southern Alberta.

Overall, he enjoys firefighting for the opportunity to learn, with many of the skills you pick up being applicable elsewhere.

And, you learn more about yourself.

Because grad crept up on him, Keynan is debating between studying mechanical engineering or fire engineering. The latter emphasizes fire prevention and resistance.

Whichever he chooses, we wish him the best of luck.

Cal Olson received a Hockey Alberta award last month to recognize his outstanding contributions to minor hockey in Alberta.

Three cheers for Pappy!

Submitted by Maggie Olson Cal (Pappy) Olson was presented with a prestigious award from Todd Vance, Zone 5 chairman, at the Alberta Hockey general meeting last month.

The award was for his outstanding contributions to minor hockey in Alberta, and Todd felt that it was certainly appropriate.

In Todd’s speech, he noted that people like Pappy are becoming fewer and fewer in the rinks. He added that they are truly one of a kind and need to be recognized as their love of the sport encompasses family and friends, and they do make a difference.

What Pappy has done, and still does, affects the long-term development of these kids. He is “truly a hero, in my books,” says Todd. “My hat goes off to him. We are truly blessed to have a man like that.”

Pappy was humbled by the award — he just does what comes naturally to him. He loves the sport and is fortunate enough to be able to carry on and continue to help young kids carry on their love, also.

His hockey life started while playing pond hockey in Enchant at a young age. They even played games against neighbouring towns on actual ponds.

Pappy’s first organized minor hockey involvement was in Vauxhall at the age of 10 in 1962.

His whole life was hockey. As the oldest of five boys, and with a dad who actively played himself, the only topic in the house was hockey. Just ask his mom.

He could even be found helping to clean the ice with the old water barrels and sweepers after school. The rink was his second home.

When he was too old to play minor hockey, he and his dad played with the Circle Hill Coronas.

Travelling to a hockey game in Great Falls was a really big deal in those days.

He played college hockey with the Lethbridge Kodiaks with the likes of well-known radio announcer Mark Campbell.

Marriage was his next step, and together we moved to Coaldale. Hockey couldn’t end here, and he found himself his first coaching job with the Coaldale midget team when he was only 23.

The windup party was held at our home the night before our eldest son, Cory, was born.

Heaven forbid that life should come before hockey!

The house was still a mess when I got home from the hospital with a new baby. He never did that again. It’s a memory that still makes me laugh.

Such was life in the Olson household. He was also playing with the Coaldale McClelland team in the rec league at that time.

We moved to Pincher Creek in 1977 when Pappy started working at the Shell plant.

He played hockey for the Pincher Creek Sulphur Kings, and then for the Huskies in the senior Ranchland league.

He really started his volunteering mode when

he dislocated his shoulder and acted as assistant coach under Clint Schamber. Our sons became regulars on the Husky bus. They loved that life.

He’s been playing with the Oldtimers since 1987 and still plays to this day, even after two knee replacements and a shoulder repair. They call him Bionic Pappy with all his braces and aids.

His goal in life is to play as long as his own dad, who was 72 when he played his last game after being diagnosed with cancer. Soon after, he passed away.

Pappy became very active with his boys, Cory and Kevin, after 1981. He would coach either boy alternately each year as they, too, went up the ranks in minor hockey.

He always sat on the minor hockey board, as either a director or a team manager. He loved working the concessions and helped find equipment many times for young players who couldn’t afford their own.

Often, he ran skates to the local skate sharpeners for total strangers who needed assistance.

Along with his mother-in-law, Anne Hayden, Zone 5 chairwoman, he was instrumental in helping form the South AA hockey program.

Anne holds an honourable position in the Alberta Hockey Hall of Fame for all her hard work with Alberta minor hockey and was an awesome influence.

Her philosophy was that hockey was for the kids. “Keep politics out of it,” she used to say. So wise.

Pappy then helped the AA Southwest Rockies hockey program as a director and manager. I took a turn myself as president for two years. He was still available to the teams even after his youngest son, Kevin, moved on in his career.

He was always actively involved when following Kevin, who played in the Western Hockey League and junior A leagues.

Hockey didn’t stop even after he retired from

Shell in 2009. He needed to do more with his spare time and started helping with the minor hockey initiation program once again.

This program is now his obsession. Many participants haven’t even been on skates before and he loves helping them and seeing them progress.

He loves their hugs, even away from the rink.

Pappy has become his only name now.

He continues to follow some of those kids and can be found helping with novice and atoms as well.

He leaves the house every Tuesday and Thursday at 3:15 p.m., and doesn’t get home till 6:15. He wouldn’t have it any other way.

These boys and girls are his extended family now, and he thinks nothing of going off to Raymond, Foremost or wherever to watch them play when he can sneak out on me.

I can’t imagine what he will be like when our grandson, Max, starts hockey.

One of the most precious times at the rink is bringing Santa and his goodie bags to the initiation and novice practices, something he’s done for 32 years now.

Many Santas have come and gone, but Pappy is still there. He loves hearing the kids’ wish lists and can often let parents in on a secret or two.

Pappy has his life of hockey, surrounded by a supportive family, two awesome sons and many friends from all over the Prairie provinces. He has experiences that he wouldn’t trade for anything and, hopefully, many more to come.

In his acceptance speech he said, “Hockey needs to be enjoyed by the kids, it’s for the kids, by the kids.”

“Be with the kids at the rink, supporting them and helping them. There is no greater satisfaction than that high-five or a handshake at the end of a game. It’s a life like no other.”

Be a volunteer steward Submitted by Crowsnest Forest Stewardship Society June 4 marks the 22nd anniversary of the Ed Gregor Memorial Stewardship Day, the longest-standing volunteer stewardship day in Canada, according to Andrew Rusynyk.

It was created in conjunction with Alberta Sustainable Resource Development when the Crowsnest Forest Stewardship Society was formed.

On this day, users, groups and clubs in the area come together to help maintain the land where they recreate and live. And they do this by taking on a number of projects to keep the Crowsnest forest healthy, sustainable and looking beautiful.

It is also a great opportunity for all, including our youth, to develop an appreciation and respect for this special place.

There is a tremendous amount of effort put into the organization and co-ordination of this event, which to date has produced: — Over $1.5 million in donated volunteer hours, equipment and supplies by over 3,700 volunteers. The work includes trail maintenance, reclamation and repair, walkways, benches, signs and kiosks, random campsite and backcountry cleanup, and other upgrades.

— Thousands of kilometres of roadside and forestry trails that have been cleaned up, and over 42 tonnes of garbage collected. Every year there is a noticeable improvement in the areas, with less garbage to find.

— The planting of approximately 10,000 tree seedlings in the C5 forest.

— Improvements to trails including Allison/Chinook Lake, Beaver Mines Lake, Syncline cross-country trails, Table Mountain, Old Miner’s Path, Star Creek, and many OHV, hiking and horseback winter and summer trails in the Crowsnest forest.

— The installation of numerous bridges by volunteers, particularly by the Crowsnest Pass Quad Squad and Crow Snow Riders. These bridges keep riders out of the rivers and creeks,

protecting riparian health and keeping these trails sustainable.

The CFSS has worked closely with all local government agencies, all user groups and many other volunteer organizations to develop this day into a huge asset in keeping this area beautiful.

This year’s stewardship day starts with a gathering of volunteers in the morning at the ranger station in downtown Blairmore, where everyone gets a hearty free breakfast, starting at 7:30 a.m.

Afterwards people divide into groups and disperse to the locations of the day’s projects.

Projects planned for the day include: trail work, tree planting, mountain bike trail maintenance, bridge installation, interpretive trail maintenance, bee box building, bee catching, bee education, highway cleanup, snowmobile shelter cleanup, general forest cleanup and other projects to be announced.

Projects are a great opportunity for groups, families and all ages, including the very young, to participate. It is a great way to meet others that truly care about the Crowsnest forest.

To finish off the day, everyone will return to the ranger station to enjoy a hot supper and check their draw tickets.

And there are tons of other prizes to be given out to participants.

The hard-working volunteer executive of CFSS invites everyone who lives or recreates in the C5 forest to come out and show their pride for these public lands.

It seems like the eyes of the world are on this corner of the province, so now is the time to show that you really care for this gift.

The ongoing support of many sponsors, organizations and individuals has made this event a great success.

Crowsnest Pass Protective Services Weekly Bulletin Submitted by CNP Fire/Rescue Thank you to those who came out to our open house regarding Community Wildfire Preparedness Day on May 7. It was a timely event with all that is going on in the northern part of the province.

In answer to many questions regarding our response to the issues in Fort McMurray, Crowsnest Pass has crews ready to be deployed if the provincial operations centre calls us for assistance.

We have an operational plan that will allow us to send crews and still have personnel and equipment here to maintain safety in our community.

In the meantime, we will continue to work on preparing our area for a potentially busy wildland fire season. Our efforts will be on training, vegetation/fuel management and community education.

In an effort to clean up our residential areas, our bylaw officer and our peace officer will be speaking

with homeowners about derelict and abandoned vehicles.

Share some laughs with Livingstone School

The Livingstone School drama club has a night of entertainment and laughter in store for public audiences.

The Lundbreck school will be hosting the performances, which include two short plays.

They will be presented at 7 p.m. on both May 26 and 27.

The comedic nature of the plays is hinted at in their titles: The Internet is Distract– Oh Look

a Kitten! and Action News: Now with 10% More Action!

Assistant principal Mary Krizan says she ordered the plays from Playscripts, Inc. for the variety they would offer the student actors.

Each student actor will be able to play multiple roles, with plenty of costumes and props.

There are 15 students performing, ranging from grades 5 to 12, and Mary says rehearsals are proceeding smoothly.

Everyone is welcome to the plays. Tickets are

available at the school office and at the door.

For the Thursday night performance, tickets are $7 per adult and $4 per student, and free for children six and under.

On Friday night, admission is $8 per adult and $5 per student, and free for children six and under. A dessert social will follow the plays on Friday night, which explains the higher price of admission.

Students are bringing the desserts, says Mary.

This is their way to give back to the community.

Exhibit is all about the journey

By Erin Fairhurst Lethbridge-based artist Rick Gillis has a new exhibit on display at Crowsnest Pass Public Art Gallery, and he couldn’t be happier about it.

Krisztina Wood, the gallery's managing director, “couldn’t have done a better job of setting it up,” Rick says.

Entitled A Journey Through My Mind, the exhibit is both “allegorical and whimsical,” according to Rick, and features 20 pieces that are vibrant esthetically yet often dark in theme.

As a former journalist, Rick comes with a long history of writing and storytelling and believes in incorporating elements of storytelling in his art.

“I really believe every painting should have a message and something to say,” he says of his exhibit. “Art is about communication.”

Some of the work in the exhibit is relatively new, and other work goes back four or five years. “This is the first time this particular collection has been on display all together, and it does tell quite a story,” says Rick.

The exhibit is open until June 6 at Crowsnest Pass Public Art Gallery, which is located in Frank on Highway 3.

Readers pick up piles of books to help library

A few people were seen with armfuls of reading material.

The first mornings of the sales are usually busy, says Barb Kananen, a member of Friends of the Library.

The group holds the sales in support of the Pincher Creek and District Municipal Library. The proceeds go towards those “extras” not covered by the library. Furniture and computers are often coveted items.

Everyone welcome to join in bird count

By Brad Quarin Given the surprising enthusiasm Canadians are displaying for taking the latest census, perhaps there will be some spillover for counting kinds of birds and other animals that populate the Crowsnest Pass.

The Crowsnest Conservation Society is holding its annual May species count on May 25 and 26, an event that can attract participants from Lethbridge and other cities.

“There’s a lot of avid birders around, and they like our area,” says Merilyn Liddell, a member of the Crowsnest Conservation birding committee.

For out-of-town admirers of feathered creatures, the count offers a chance to see birds not found in their own areas. It also provides a reason to get out into nature.

Besides birds, the May species count takes note of mammals and butterflies spotted in the ecosystem.

Locals are welcome to join in the event.

The May species count is even larger than the Christmas bird count. Counters have to limit themselves to a certain area at Christmas, but in May they can cover as much ground as they wish, says Merilyn. You only have to specify the area when you submit your data.

In the past, the Crowsnest Pass May species count has had as few as four counters and as many as 20.

There were 20 counters last year so the area of the count was expanded.

Usually, the society explores the territory from the British Columbia border to Highway 22. Last year, counters also moved to the side roads.

While you may think you have to be able to recognize a species in order to participate, Merilyn explains that novices are welcome.

Newcomers will be partnered with seasoned birders. When they’re out walking it can be a big help for novices to point to anything they spot.

In the end, the information goes to Nature Alberta, which will evaluate any increase or decrease in animal species.

Based on the data, the organization will suggest changes to the ecosystem that may help animal friends in need.

People’s Choice Award winners A new addition to the Winter in Alberta photo contest, sponsored by Crowsnest Pass Public Art Gallery and Shootin’ the Breeze, is the People’s Choice Award.

In addition to placings awarded by a panel of judges in late February, all who visited the photo display in Pincher Creek from mid March to mid April were invited to vote for their favourites. The number of entries that were chosen indicates the talent of our local photographers.

The top three are: first place, “Fire and Ice” by Stacey William Head, bottom right photo; second, “Wintry Flight” by Tom Chandler, top right; and third, “Fresh Snow” by Leslie Claringbull, bottom left.
