By Brad Quarin One hundred thirty-one Canyon School students skipped rope or shot hoops at the end of April, joining nationwide efforts to raise funds for heart disease and stroke research.

By collecting pledges, the students raised $8,924 in this year’s Jump Rope for Heart, which supports the Heart and Stroke Foundation.

This year also marks 25 years of participation in the campaign for the local co-ordinator, Grade 1 teacher Sylvia Riedel.

She believes the project is important. “It makes the kids aware of heart and stroke problems, because I don’t think a lot of them talk about that at home, and I think it raises money for a good cause,” she says.

“I really try to stress to the kids where their money is going and why it’s important. It’s not about the prizes that they get. Their money could save a life one day, or maybe their own.”

She finds that the children do care, and some wear the names of people they can help on paper hearts.

Besides Jump Rope for Heart, Mrs. Riedel is also known for supporting the annual Terry Fox Run at Canyon School.

One person impressed with, and thankful for, Mrs. Riedel’s long-standing efforts is Trish York, a fund development co-ordinator for the Heart and Stroke Foundation.

“Mrs. Riedel is a real pleasure to work with.

Her love of children is evident in all her caring ways,” she says. “She runs a very fun program to keep the kids healthy and active.”

Mrs. Riedel has been teaching at Canyon School for 18 years. She previously worked at Livingstone School in Lundbreck and at Central School, where Pincher Creek’s town office is now.

She first heard of Jump Rope for Heart when she was at Central School. She replaced teacher Cheryl Stewart, who was then co-ordinating it.

Canyon School students raised nearly $13,000 in 2008, and $11,000 last year. The target was lowered this year because of the economic downturn.

Over the past 18 years, Canyon School students have raised $160,000.

Mrs. Riedel also began her involvement in the Terry Fox Run at Central School. She started promoting the walk because of her nephew, Brett, who was diagnosed with cancer at only six months old.

Brett walked in the Terry Fox Run at age two, and beat cancer at around five. He is now a doctor.

In Canyon School’s Terry Fox Run, students walk 30 or 40 minutes along the creek, carrying a flag with Terry’s picture on it.

They raise their money through donations or pledges, and have brought in $38,000 between 1999 and 2014.

Mrs. Riedel’s role in these achievements is worthy of much kudos.

When she moved to Canyon School, they already had Jump Rope for Heart, but she believes there was less emphasis on pledges then.

As a co-ordinator, she has other teachers distribute information to parents, sends out pledge forms, collects the money and gives out prizes.

Typical prizes include soccer balls and gift certificates. This year one boy raised the $500 needed to win a three-wheel scooter.

Mrs. Riedel attempts to get the children excited by sharing information.

“I’m not a jump up and down kind of person, but I try to get the materials up early in the year,” she says. She also puts prizes up in the trophy case for the children to see.

Between 120 and 140 children participate each year. This time saw an increase in kindergarten students getting involved with six, up from one.

While the $8,924 raised this year comes close to the goal of $9,000, it’s not the most the

Thanks to a donation from Shell Waterton, Pincher Creek Parent Link Family Centre has been able to increase its resource library by over 400 new titles. It has also allowed the library to develop literacy backpacks that will aid patrons to foster an early love of literacy in their children.

The resource library is located in the Parent Link Family Centre at Ranchland Mall and is available for use during open hours of the centre. There is no membership fee required and patrons are welcome to sign out CDs, DVDs, parenting resources, picture books and literacy backpacks to take home to enjoy with their families.

The concept of Shootin' the Breeze is to share positive things happening in and around Pincher Creek and Crowsnest Pass.

Readers tell us they appreciate the cheery nature of the publication, and it's a pleasure to share good news.

Flipping through the pages of this week's paper, I see a broad spectrum of things to be optimistic about within our communities.

At the book launch, John will speak more about why he and Kathleen wrote it and how they researched it.

John says a lot of people have expressed interest in going, and he believes that’s because the community supports local authors.

It can be a battle for writers to get a book published, says John, but being previously published helped. The main challenge has been one of paperwork and accounting.

Lone Pine is publishing Spiders of Western Canada.

It has already received some recognition, with Lone Pine submitting the book to the Canadian Science Writers’ Association to consider for a communication award.

The publisher has also submitted it to the Book Publishers Association for the non-fiction book award.

Spiders of Western Canada will sell for $24.95, and will be available at Kootenai Brown Pioneer Village.

Sunglasses provide UV light protection Submitted by Rocky Ridge Eye Centre Spring is here and summer is fast approaching. This is the time of year that many people think of as “sunglass season.”

Sunglasses can be worn for fashion and comfort, but protection from UV light is the most important benefit for the eyes.

UV light is high-energy light that is not visible to our eyes, but its effects are definitely felt – sometimes very quickly and sometimes over the long term.

Exposure to UV light is now known to greatly increase the risk of cataracts, macular degeneration, and certain types of cancer on or around the eyes. Macular degeneration is the leading cause of vision loss in people over 50.

It is estimated that 50 per cent of the UV exposure we experience happens before the age of 18.

This is due to the fact that children tend to spend a lot of time outdoors, they have large pupils, and the lenses inside their eyes are crystal clear, allowing lots of light into the eye.

The damage from UV is cumulative, meaning every little bit of exposure adds to the potential damage. For this reason, UV protection is essential at any age but especially for youth.

Sunglasses aren’t just for sunny days, either. Ninety per cent of UV light will penetrate cloud cover, even when infrared light (what we feel as heat from the sun) does not.

This means that you can still get sunburned on a cool, cloudy day and your eyes are taking in as much or more UV than on a sunny day since a person may not shield their eyes as much when it’s not so bright.

Make sure you have good quality sunglasses with 100 per cent UV-A and UV-B protection.

Breakfast Club rocks!

By Erin Fairhurst Everyone knows that breakfast is the most important meal of the day.

Staff and volunteers at Horace Allen School are going above and beyond to make sure all of their students benefit from a good breakfast.

Now in its eighth year, the Breakfast Club offers students a daily mid-morning meal. It can be as simple as a piece of fruit or as hearty as a waffle, depending on the student’s appetite.

Jan Rolston, an educational assistant at the school, says the Breakfast Club gives students “a great start to their day.”

She adds that even though most students get breakfast at home, a lot of them still travel a long dis-

tance to school every morning on the bus or else have just worked up an appetite by mid morning.

“You’d be surprised at how much food a group of Grade 3 boys can go through,” she laughs.

The Breakfast Club is entirely run by parents and volunteers.

Some help by preparing food in advance and others dutifully report to the school every morning to help hand out food and snacks.

Local businesses and ongoing donations help to put food on the table for the program.

It’s not just the kids who benefit from the Breakfast Club.

One special volunteer, who simply goes by Ralph, is particularly devoted to helping out at the school.

BREAKFAST CLUB, continued from page 10 Crowsnest Community Support Society, and suffers from mental disabilities. But that doesn’t stop him from helping out where he’s needed.

Nothing stops his face from lighting up as he interacts with the students in the Breakfast Club.

Jazzy Patten, an aide with the Crowsnest Community Support Society, says that when Ralph has to miss a day of Breakfast Club, his disappointment is palpable.

“He loves coming and helping out,” she says, “and the kids are always happy to see him too.”

Case in point, Ralph and the Breakfast Club kids have developed the tradition of greeting each other by tapping elbows and chorusing “Breakfast Club rocks!” every morning.

James Woodall, executive director of the Crowsnest Community Support Society, says that Ralph’s involvement in the program is beneficial not just because it helps to connect Ralph to the community, but also for the children he interacts with.

“Hopefully this experience for the kids will have a lasting impression on them, so that when they meet other people in the future with disabilities they have positive experiences to draw from and are therefore more aware and accepting of anyone who is different.”

Masons server dinner to help Fort McMurray

By Brad Quarin In recent weeks, the attention of our province and country has been turned to northern Alberta, to the fire threatening Fort McMurray and to the plight of the evacuees.

And it is these evacuees who will be the beneficiaries of a surf and turf dinner hosted by the Chinook Spitze Masons. The prime rib and lobster dinner is open to anyone, and will be served by lodge members on June 4 at Cowley Community Hall.

“Some people think we’re a secret society,” says Gord Pitt, one of the Mason organizers. “But we’re not. We’re a society with few secrets, and we help people.”

Conspiracy theorists contend that the Masons secretly rule the world, but he says the benefits to membership aren’t quite so lucrative.

“It’s a huge amount of work to be a member of a lodge,” he says.

“The most important thing that a Mason recognizes is family and health, and helping your fellow man.”

“Like a lot of service clubs, you join because you feel a sense of wanting to be a part of something better than yourself,” he adds.

It is certainly true that the Masons have a long history. The oldest lodge, found in Edinburgh, Scotland, was established in 1599. Gord says the Cowley lodge is about 125 years old.

The local lodge regularly performs community service, often holding dinners at Christmas as well as annual projects outside the lodge.

In the past, the Cowley Masons have participated in highway cleanups and they erected a sitting area in Cowley.

This year, they decided on a dinner fundraiser. Originally, they had no particular cause in mind. Typically, members canvass the tables during the dinner asking guests what charities they would like to benefit. The proceeds are then divided accordingly.

But that went out the window once the news from northern Alberta broke.

“As soon as this fire started, we knew exactly what we would do with it,” Gord says. He believes that, if there was a survey of the guests, this would be their choice anyway.

The fund will include all the proceeds of the dinner minus the cost of the event.

You don’t have to be a member of the lodge to attend, and children are welcome. There are only 130 tickets available and they are selling fast.

A ticket for the prime rib and lobster plate is $50. A dinner of only prime rib is $27 and lobster only is $34.

Cocktails will be served at 5 p.m. and dinner will start at 6 p.m.

Researcher talks bears

By Brad Quarin Last week, the children of Horace Allen and Isabelle Sellon schools in Crowsnest Pass learned more about bears — and shared what they already knew.

University of Alberta grad student Annie Loosen and Crowsnest Conservation Society member Elizabeth Anderson visited the schools to discuss the latest from the bear hair project.

“They were a very receptive, warm audience,” Annie says. “People get excited about bears.”

Annie has been monitoring grizzly and black bear populations south of Highway 3, measuring their numbers by studying hairs left on bear rub objects.

Bears rub against trees, power poles and fence posts to communicate with each other. Researchers analyze the DNA in hairs left behind, identifying the species, the individual and the sex of the individual. In this way, they can approximate the total numbers in a given area.

Annie explains her project is piggybacking on the work of Andrea Morehouse, whose research began in 2011.

Originally concerned only with grizzlies, Annie became more involved because 40 per cent of the hair found was from black bears.

Elizabeth also explained why it’s important to know how many bears are out there, and what happens when attractants bring bears to town.

When asked, the ISS children explained several differences between grizzlies and black bears, noting grizzlies have humps and are generally bigger.

They knew the word DNA and many said they had seen rub trees.

The children at HAS were also excited, and shared their stories.

Elizabeth sums them up: “There was a bear in my neighbourhood, or a bear in my backyard, or a bear in my house.”

The last one may have been a little exaggerated, but it speaks to the enthusiasm of the young learners in bear country.

By Joyce McFarland I am no gardener but I’m the lucky one, for I have nothing but time to enjoy all the peaceful beauty and colour — gifts really — that the gardeners in Pincher Creek give me every day during this lovely growing season; with God’s help, of course.

The highlight for May is still to come this Friday, when a general meeting will be held, starting at 10 a.m. This will be your chance to meet and greet the board members in their new positions and to volunteer your time and ideas to the board’s endeavours.

When you get all that off your chest, please make sure you are back to the centre in time to play bingo at 1:30 p.m. Virginia will be your hostess, George will call the numbers on the big TV screen, and the Pincher Creek Co-op will satisfy your sweet tooth with free fresh treats from the bakery, along with coffee. If all else fails, you may get lucky with the 50-50 draw. All seniors are welcome.

Good news to report in May was the crib tournament, with 40 people enjoying a well-organized day and a super lunch at noon.

Someday soon I will make mention of all the people behind the scenes who make these programs such a success. But for now, Shirley made the lasagna and Marina bossed the show. It was a great day.

Two couples from Lethbridge took first and second prizes, and our own members Virginia and Barbara won third. A lady from Coaldale won the 50-50 — it was a big prize in itself.

One of our longtime members, Harvey Van Gilder, celebrated his 80th birthday recently.

Carol and all his family with some close friends put on a very special party at Vista Village, balloons and everything. It is hard to get a whole family together at the same time, but this gathering worked perfectly, and all Harvey’s friends at the centre wish him Happy Birthday as well.

Another longtime member, Irene Hinman, bad girl, fell off a wobbly stool, broke a bone and ended up in Vista Village, where she is dressed to kill, and likes being waited on hand and foot. She is looking forward to your visit.

Wonderful staff in that place — I didn’t know there were so many Good Samaritans around.

Prize for the success story of the month goes to Jackie Therriault, a member we all know well.

After years of picking rhubarb without problems, she found out that it was hard work this year. Enter a good man walking his dog. Smart girl, she has decided to rest her aching back for a while before she tackles the rhubarb pies. Pray that she gets well quickly; I want a piece of her pie before I croak.

Not all of our members are able to take things so easy. The board has a few irons in the

fire and relies on your input to fan the flames.

To this end, we have two dedicated members who report regularly to the board.

Doreen Michalsky buys the groceries and cleaning supplies. She checks the order book weekly, so your info on everyday needs is greatly appreciated. We have a seniors discount numbered account at the Co-op and Doreen makes beneficial use of that favour as she sees fit.

Marina May is the entertainment committee.

She organizes and searches for social events that would appeal to seniors. This May crib tournament was an example of her diligence in advertising and planning. Crib players came from Lethbridge, Coaldale and Claresholm so we were assured of a full house.

These two ladies are looking for your positive feedback all the time. Your complaints will be courteously handled at the board meetings through the proper channels.

School will be out soon, so holidays and family will take the lead. The regular programs and all the summer fun stuff planned for June will be available in the calendars, available at the centre by May 30.

Hopefully there will be a family wedding in June, so buy a swishy dress and talk some mother’s son into a decent haircut.

York Creek Lodge rebuild location information The Crowsnest Pass Senior Housing board would like to share some facts with the community regarding York Creek Lodge and the proposed new lodge.

Residents living in YCL are not bed bound. Once a resident requires a two-person lift, they are transferred to a facility that provides a higher level of care.

The board was asked not to divulge the location of the new lodge, as all the details with the parcel of land had not been cleared.

The provincial government evaluated the lodge to ascertain whether to do a major renovation or a new build.

There were many obstacles with the renovations, the number 1 being how to accomplish major construction with the residents in place and no place to move them in the interim.

Widening existing hallways to accommodate walkers and wheelchairs was impossible. The final decision was to proceed with a new building, as there was not a big cost difference.

The government had three criteria for a new site: 2.6 acres were required, it had to be donated land and the land had to be serviced.

The new location was the only parcel available to us that met their criteria.

Originally in discussions with the government, the board and the municipality would have had to raise $1.5 million to $2 million, which ultimately would have come from property taxes.

Now, the government is funding the entire project.

The railway tracks (possible derailment) and the river (flooding) have always been concerns for the lodge. Also of concern is the safety of residents with crossing the tracks to go to the mall and the fact that the ambulance could be delayed because of a train 3” wide version blocking the crossing.

These issues will now be alleviated.

The lodge does have a bus to transport residents to shopping, social activities, banks and doctors’ appointments.

Many of the doctors see patients at the lodge on a regular basis and all the drugstores deliver. The library also visits the lodge on a regular basis.

Presently, the bus is used on a continual basis. In fact, the residents association just purchased a newer bus which is more user-friendly for walkers and wheelchairs.

The provincial government had the final decision as to the location. The board thought long and hard before agreeing to the location but did not want to lose the project and all the funding.

Unfortunately, we live in a long, narrow corridor and large pieces of flat land are hard to come by.

Our seniors really do deserve to have a modern and comfortable place to live. The new rooms will be twice the size of existing rooms and all will have walk-in showers.

Although everyone thinks the old hospital site would have been perfect, it was not available to us and some issues could be: — Do we really know where the load out for the new mine will be?

— No one knows for sure where Highway 3 will be relocated down the road.

What a shame it would be to build a new building and then, 10 years down the road, have to move and rebuild. No one knows the impact those two projects could have on that site.

Once all the plans have been finalized, there will be an open house for public viewing.

The lodge will require additional funds for furnishings and enhancements completed.

Help keep Terry Fox Run alive in Pincher Creek Thirty-six years ago Terry Fox ran a marathon each day for 143 days, on one leg, to raise money for cancer research. When his own cancer spread and he was forced to stop running, he challenged the world to continue pursuing his dream.

Today, over 700 communities across Canada participate in the run each year to raise money for cancer research and to support Terry’s legacy.

Since 1984, Pincher Creek has raised over $108,000 for the Terry Fox Foundation. However, the community may not be able to participate in the long-standing tradition if the foundation is unable to find a run organizer.

“When I started this run, I said that if we all gave one dollar, we’d have $24 million for cancer research,” said Terry Fox. “There’s no reason that isn’t possible.”

Terry Fox has inspired an incredible wave of change over the past 36 years. Since he ran the Marathon of Hope in 1980, The Terry Fox Foundation has raised over $715 million and has helped to reshape cancer research.

The foundation stands out from other charities in that 84 cents of every dollar collected goes directly to cancer research.

However, in order to continue doing so, volunteer run organizers are needed as they play a crucial role in their community’s involvement.

The Terry Fox Foundation is looking for a motivated and passionate individual to take on the role as the run organizer for Pincher Creek’s annual Terry Fox Run. This year the run will be held on Sunday, Sept. 18. The run organizer is responsible for confirming the route, promoting the run and overseeing the event on run day. The foundation also provides the run organizer with posters, pledge sheets and other materials needed to promote the run.

Kananaskis Rodeo Association has a big heart

By Brad Quarin Kananaskis Rodeo Association president Joe Trotz once told Shootin’ the Breeze that one of the defining characteristics of the Kananaskis Pro Rodeo is its generosity.

In 2014, Joe said that all proceeds go “back into our community…. That’s really unique.”

We saw this in mid May when KRA directors Jackie Sudworth and Tracey Linderman presented cheques to charitable organizations out of the rodeo’s 50-50 draws.

A cheque for $914 went to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.

Trish York, a fund development co-ordinator, says the money will support research and that the foundation is grateful to the rodeo association.

“They have such big hearts,” she says.

Tracey says the donation to the foundation was inspired by the passing of KRA member Greg Kesler.

Another $1,035 went to the Alzheimer Society of Alberta and Northwest Territories.

Diane Herrick, manager of community relations for the society, says the funds will support local programs in Lethbridge and southern Alberta. One program is First Link, in which the society calls families to hear their concerns and answer questions about Alzheimer’s disease.

The donation to the society was moved by the passing of Susan Wakaluk, Tracey says.

Finally, $1,080 was donated to the Canadian Cancer Society.

KRA has been supporting the Canadian Cancer Society with its Tough Enough to Wear Pink campaign for years.

This year, the cheque was accepted on behalf of the society by two local women, cancer survivor Leone Stacheruk and Tina Smith, whose father Cameron Kaprowski is fighting the disease.

ATB shows community spirit from its new home

By Brad Quarin Things have been busy this month at ATB Financial.

After moving into Pincher Creek’s Ranchland Mall, the bank has been generous in spreading goodwill in the community.

The bank held a number of draws for prizes, made a substantial donation to the Pincher Spray Park Society, and participated in the annual Teddy for a Toonie campaign.

“We just wanted to give back to the community to celebrate our new branch location and all the support we’ve received over the years,” says branch manager Shawn Jensen.

The new location suits the business well. “It’s given us the space that we need, all the new technology and upgrades that we like, and the parking has been the biggest benefit to our customers,” he says.

Despite being Friday the 13th, it turned out to be a lucky day for the spray park society, which received $5,000 from ATB. Shawn says the branch chose to support the society because establishing a

spray park in Pincher Creek will benefit many in town, especially the children.

The money came out of the regional office’s programs for health and wellness and community and social development.

Jennifer Draper and Billi Rigaux of the society say the organization has now raised $26,000 for the park.

On the same day, ATB wrapped up a week of draws for prizes. The smart TV purchased from the Brick was won by Marlene Bourque.

Meanwhile, ATB and the Co-op joined together to sponsor a barbeque in front of the mall, with all of the funds going to the Teddy for a Toonie campaign.

The Teddy for a Toonie campaign, which supports the Alberta Children’s Hospital Foundation, has been going well this year, Shawn says.

The bank sells small teddy bears for $15 while offering $2 raffle tickets for the larger one. All money raised in Pincher Creek goes directly to this foundation.

Ronald Four Horns 1943 – 2016

Ronald was born to the late Edmond and Eva Four Horns on March 15, 1943. He was the second of 13 children, and was raised by his grandparents Tom and Mary Four Horns until he went to Sacred Heart Residential School at the young age of four.

He would often be seen driving his grandparents to Brocket with their horse and wagon to gather mail. On the way home, they would often stop and visit the Many Guns family. In the summer months, Ronald would return home from boarding school and spend time with his family.

Ronald returned home when he was 16 and began to travel around Alberta and the United States looking for work.

He met his first wife, Ernestine Big Beaver, in Browning, Mont.

Together, they had four children — Ronnie, Russell, Emerson and Mary Margaret. Ronald resided at Crow Lodge with his family until moving across the river in 1981. His wife passed away in 1985.

Ronald then started his second family with wife Sylvia, whom he married on Feb. 25, 1986. Together, they raised their five children — Sarah, Leslie, Josh, Ross and Jazz. They spent 30 memorable years together.

Ronald started his spiritual journey around this time. His spiritual elders were Buster Yellow Kidney, Johnny Day Rider, George Good Striker, Rufus Good Striker and Jimmy Small Legs. For the next 30 years he travelled with his family to the U.S.A., where he spent his summers dancing in the Sun Lodge. He taught his wife, children and grandchildren this way of life. This is his legacy that he leaves with them to carry on.

Ronald lived a full life and was always surrounded by people who loved him. Everyone who met him will remember him for his wittiness, caring, loving and traditional ways. When times got rough they would come home and knew Ol’ Man would make it right with $1,000 and a hard-luck story.

He will be deeply missed.

Ronald is survived by wife Sylvia and their five children, Sarah, Josh (Jessica), Ross, Jazz (Gerald) and Leslie; siblings Harvey, George (Beverly) Four Horns, Terry (John) Miller and May Four Horns; and also Twylla, Robbie and Kalib Smith, along with many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by parents Edmond and Eva Four Horns and grandparents Tom and Mary Four Horns and Charlie and Sally Provost. Also siblings Gerald, Lewis, Micheal, Frank, Loretta, Ruth, Sheila and Rhonda; his first wife, Ernestine Big Beaver, and children Ronnie, Russell, Mary and Emerson; and mother-in-law Margret Yellow Horn.

Steven Russell Fincaryk Dec. 31, 1949 – May 15, 2016 Steve died peacefully on May 15, 2016, at the Pincher Creek Health Centre, after a 16-month battle with cancer.

Steve grew up in the Sturgis, Sask., area. After getting his heavyduty mechanic’s certificate, he found work at the Elk Valley Coal Mines and moved to Fernie, B.C., in 1971.

In 1974, Steve and his wife, Dianne, with daughter Glenda moved to Hillcrest, where son Dwayne was born. Dianne still resides in Hillcrest and their children remained close to their parents. Glenda lives in Bellevue with husband Darren and their daughter, Jessica, and Dwayne lives in Coleman.

Steve had many friends and each will have a “Steve story” of their own. He liked nothing better than having his friends and family gathered around the barbecue with a case of beer, a bottle of vodka and his music. Those were good times for him.

Restoring old vehicles was one of Steve’s many talents. He restored a 1966 Mercury Park Lane convertible to original condition for himself, and helped many friends restore their vehicles. Steve also enjoyed hunting and spending time camping in the woods, enjoying the beauty of nature.

His friends and family have many different memories of Steve, but the one thing everyone will remember is his big heart. Steve was always the first one there whenever anyone needed a helping hand.

Steve is survived by his wife of 44 years, Dianne; his daughter, Glenda (Darren) Nastasi, and granddaughter Jessica; his son, Dwayne; his sisters, Isabel Geard and Joyce (Ray) Elliot; and numerous nieces and nephews.

At Steve’s request, no funeral service will be held.

Memorial contributions for the late Steven Fincaryk may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, 317 10th St. S., Lethbridge, AB, T1J 2M7.

The museum applied for its second grant after receiving a first that covered the initial restoration, including fixing the roof and adding a ramp to the loft.

Ultimately, Heritage Acres secured the latest grant by matching it through volunteer labour and equipment, he says.

The work of the regular Heritage Acres volunteers is valued at $15 per hour.

The goal of the project is to have a grand opening for the Zoeteman/Vogelaar barn in August 2017, during that year’s Heritage Acres Annual Show.

The renovations should be done and the displays should be ready by that time.

Robert doesn’t think the target date is out of reach. “I think we’re getting close to where we’ll get it completed,” he says.

After the cement work, the barn will still need painting and volunteers will have to put new glass into the windows.

Even though the grand opening is over a year away, Heritage Acres staff are taking visitors inside the barn to have a look. The feedback has been good.

“It’s an outstanding building,” he says, noting the Gothic arch resembling a cathedral. “They felt it was certainly worthwhile.”

Heritage Acres Farm Museum opened for the season last weekend, with a new executive director, Mark Barber.
