At the regional emergency operations centre, Darryl served as deputy director of emergency management, which included both the wildfire and city operations. City operations is concerned with evacuation and security, so responsibilities included keeping people out of the city and ensuring the safety of their property.

Although he didn’t personally suppress the fire, he was able to travel through Fort McMurray and at one point saw the house where he used to live.

“I was pleased to see that it was still standing, and my wife was quite happy to hear, even though we don’t own the house anymore,” he says.

Moreover, seeing the amount of other property saved was satisfying. “There was certainly a lot of heroism during the initial hours there, when the fire was breaching the city and

properties were being lost,” he says.

“To say that 90-plus per cent of the community is still standing is a real testimony to those that were involved in those initial hours.”

Personally, Darryl found working with the Canada Task Force 2 to be the “standout” memory of his first trip to Fort McMurray.

The Calgary-based search and rescue group is a resource that Albertans are fortunate to have, he says.

He also found it an honour to brief Prime Minister Justin Trudeau about the efforts.

Darryl describes Mr. Trudeau as “very engaged in what was happening, and also very committed to providing us with basically whatever we needed to tame the beast.”

Darryl still intends to retire after his work in Fort McMurray is over, while continuing to devote time to volunteering with Crowsnest Pass Fire/Rescue.

Two paws up for reviving Purina Walk for Dog Guides

By Brad Quarin Tails are wagging in anticipation as local Lions clubs bring back Pincher Creek’s grandest dog walk.

Sunday’s Purina Walk for Dog Guides is a fundraising event enabling the provision of guide dogs to people who need them.

The Pincher Creek and Cowley Lions and the Pincher Cowley Roaring Lions have plenty of motivation for digging up the event.

“It’s such a thrill to see someone get a service dog,” says Arnold Nelson, a Cowley Lion and chairman for the event. “It lightens your heart.”

The walk was given a rest last year because people were already being asked to support so many fundraisers, he says. However, the need for guide dogs remains, and these remarkable animals are costly to prepare for their role.

It takes $25,000 to raise, train and place a dog. They are provided at no charge to Canadians with physical or mental disabilities.

And what can the disabled expect of these dogs?

A service dog can pick up things, open doors and — for the visually-impaired — detect and avoid hazards in the way. Some can even help with laundry.

Dogs are trained to serve six groups of people: those with serious visual or hearing impairments, physical disabilities, autism, seizure disorders and diabetes.

With a bit of organization and the formation of a committee for co-ordination, the Lions were able to resurrect the walk and begin to distribute pledge forms.

A person can also register and pay on the day of the walk by showing up at 1:30 p.m. in the meeting room between the Pincher Creek swimming pool and library.

Although canines as well as their owners participate in the walk, you don’t need to bring a dog to participate. A couple of Lethbridge participants, however, will be bringing real guide dogs.

The walk will begin at 2 p.m. Participants have the option of walking along the Pincher Creek or taking a shorter route around Bev McLachlin Drive.

St. Michael's students explore aboriginal heritage

By Brad Quarin The pounding of drums echoed through Kootenai Brown Pioneer Village at the end of May as students of St. Michael's School came to the museum to celebrate Heritage Day. It was the first time the Pincher Creek museum

hosted the day, set aside for exploring aboriginal cultures.

A good way to start off the festivities is by sharing native dances. So Grade 5 student Dusty Hungry Wolf bravely danced in front of his peers, performing a chicken dance.

“When you’re dancing, you don’t really lay your mind on the people. You just dance, and do your best,” he says.

Dusty has previously performed in Brocket, Stand Off and “anywhere I could possibly dance.”

Grade 6 student Honey Bastien performed a fancy shawl dance, which she describes as “a mimic of a butterfly.”

She learned the Blackfoot dance from her cousin, and her family made the outfit. Honey eagerly accepted the school’s invitation to perform.

“I’ve been waiting for a powwow for a while, and I wanted to dance before a powwow,” she says.

Not all of the native dancing at KBPV represented Blackfoot heritage specifically. Sandra Lamouche, a Livingstone Range School Division child and youth care worker, performed an Ojibwa hoop dance.

Métis youth also performed a jig, after an introduction by Gail McLenaghan, Métis Nation of Alberta Local Council Chinook 1880 president.

The Métis children present were all from Pincher Creek, and some were St. Michael’s students. They had been practising for three months, according to Gail.

“I think they did wonderful,” she says. She is proud of their performance and found the audience to be receptive.

In fact, First Nations elder and former St. Michael’s student Rosaline Crowshoe has positive things to say about the dancing in general, finding it very authentic.

She is happy the school has this celebration. “I think it’s very exciting, and it makes me very proud and it makes the students very proud,” she says.

St. Michael’s School has been

celebrating Heritage Day for years, says principal Don Kuchison.

He notes that dancing has always been integral to Heritage Day, but there was also a variety of workshops held later in the day, with one having children make bannock.

Three hundred students walked to KBPV for the celebrations. Mr. Kuchison says about 30 per cent of students at St. Michael’s are aboriginal.

Still, non-native students are also eager to participate. “They see this as a way to celebrate who we are,” he says.

This year, festivities were moved to KBPV because of construction at the school and the need for outdoor space. Mr. Kuchison says museum staff were very co-operative in hosting the ceremonies.

KBPV curator Farley Wuth says hosting St. Michael’s School students was “fantastic,” and it wasn’t difficult for the museum to accommodate the 300 youth. “The more the merrier,” he says.

He was dressed as pioneer Kootenai Brown for the occasion. Brown had good relations with the Blackfoot and had a Métis family of his own, since his wives were Assiniboine and Cree, Farley says. He was able to share this history at his presentation on Heritage Day. Mr. Kuchison was completely satisfied with the celebration at KBPV and sees a definite possibility of holding Heritage Day at the museum again.

By Brad Quarin Everyone got into the groove as Horace Allen School welcomed SQx Dance Company to Crowsnest Pass for two days in May, allowing children to learn new dance moves.

The SQx residency was sponsored by the HAS school council, made up of parents. HAS staff approached the council with the idea and the council chose to support it using funds raised at various events.

“It’s a great opportunity for our kids to be able to be involved with professional artists, and also have access to something that they don’t usually have access to,” says Myrna Dembicki, assistant principal.

SQx Dance Company is named for the giant sequoia tree. They have two bases — one is in England, the second is in Castlegar, B.C. Their mission is to foster the development of contemporary dance and they do this, partly, by taking their performances and workshops to communities — large and small — around the world.

teach their moves. There is a series of 16 movements involving hand and leg motions as well as twirls, Myrna says. Each movement has a name such as the Snowman Move, helping students to remember it.

Students performed these moves to modern dance music and a variety of other genres.

She believes the students were very engaged throughout the program. “It really got them moving and thinking about their movements,” she says.

Physical fitness is key to the program, as the children quickly discovered, and teamwork is another aspect to the dances.

The SQx dancers acted as role models, demonstrating athleticism and teamwork in their dance.

At the end of the residency, the children demonstrated what they had learned through their own performance. All of the classes performed together, and spectators were on stage looking down on the children, who resembled a wave over the floor.

Students enthusiastically agree this was something they would like to do again in the future.

My Little Corner June 1, 2016 — this is the day some residents of Fort McMurray will journey back to their homes.

Through the wonders of modern technology, some have been able to see first-hand that their homes are still standing and appear OK. Some watched helplessly as the images of their homes going up in flames played before their eyes via the same technology. Others have spent the past stressful month with no clue what awaits them on the day they are allowed back to have their first glimpse of what remains.

It's difficult to imagine.

Fort McMurray is a mythical sort of place — one many have created an negative image of based on personal perceptions of the oilpatch and its place in our country. I would hazard a guess that many who perpetuate this view haven't spent time in the city. It is caricatured as a rough and tumble, redneck and lawless sort of place, with transient workers there only for the money.

As “the beast” has ravaged northeastern Alberta over the past month, the

extensive media coverage has given Fort McMurray a new face. We have seen people who love their city and live there by choice. We have seen devastation on the faces of men, women and children whose lives have been forever altered.

The people of Fort Mac may no longer be perceived simply as "rig pigs" — they have tugged on the heartstrings of the world, the city has been humanized and personal connections have been made worldwide.

The road ahead will be long and arduous for all who call Fort McMurray home.

We have seen, and continue to see, tremendous generosity extended to those in need. Each day seems to bring another heartwarming story. It's truly amazing.

Let's continue to support all affected by the fire — residents, oilpatch workers and their families, first responders and their families, and businesses — especially with regard to mental health, as they make their difficult journeys home.

We can all take some lessons away from the ashes.

Sale supports residents of Fort McMurray

By Brad Quarin Many Crowsnest Pass residents still have vivid memories of the 2003 Lost Creek Fire — from how close those flames came to home to how brave the firefighters were in extinguishing the blaze.

So, it’s only natural that the wildfires threatening Fort McMurray have struck a chord with locals, although the scale of the fire and the losses in Fort McMurray are much greater.

“We should do something for another town going through the same thing that we had went through,” says Lisa Jahn.

Lisa’s friend Terry had an idea for a local fundraiser, and soon the two began planning a garage sale.

It will be held at the Blairmore Elks Hall on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

and they called friends to donate items to sell. One friend lent a storage unit to keep donations, and the municipality also pitched in by donating use of the hall.

Items are accumulating but more donations of sale goods will be appreciated, and anything is welcome.

Donations can be taken to the Elks Hall from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Thursday and Friday.

There will also be free tables set up for baking and home businesses, Lisa says.

All of the proceeds from the garage sale items will go to the Red Cross. Bakers can choose which of their goodies will be sold for the Red Cross, keeping some of the sales for themselves.

There’s no specific goal for the fundraiser. “I just want to bring the community together so we can do something for Fort McMurray,” Lisa says.

Seniors village celebrates fifth anniversary

By Brad Quarin For five years, Pincher Creek’s Whispering Winds Village has provided seniors with a home, independence, an active lifestyle and friendship.

In honour of this anniversary, a celebration was held in May that included a cake-cutting ceremony.

Three of the four original residents who still reside in the building cut the cake: Sylvia Faoro, Leny Mace and Louie Mundie.

“I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else,” Sylvia says. “I lost my husband. You’ve always got somebody to talk to, and people are very friendly.”

“We enjoy each other, and help each other. It’s a nice, friendly, happy family place.”

“I love it up here,” Leny says. “The staff are very good. The food is good.” She is from Calgary, but moved to Pincher Creek as her family is here.

Community manager Eileen Woolf describes Whispering Winds as “a village of independents.”

“Residents have the opportunity to come and go as they want,” she says. “We do a lot of activities here.” Residents each have a fridge and stove and can have pets.

Jason Giesbrecht, chief operating officer for Golden Life Management, which started Whispering Winds, explains their underlying philosophy.

Golden Life Management emphasizes independence and supports seniors in their efforts to be independent. The main role of Whispering Winds is to provide recreation and nutrition.

Moreover, the company regards Whispering Winds as a village and not a facility or lodge.

Golden Life was founded in Cranbrook, building and operating Joseph Creek Village in 1998.

Whispering Winds is the company’s first building in Alberta, Jason says.

Golden Life saw the Pincher Creek area as a place that could benefit from its services, and built Whispering Winds with its own construction company. It opened in May 2011.

Sylvia recalls what it was like on the first day.

“Nobody knew what to do,” she says. “Everything was new, and we had to look here and look there and ask this and ask that.”

However, a “wonderful” nurse provided them with guidance, and in five years, many more people

have moved in.

Besides the original residents, another person who has been at Whispering Winds since Day 1 is staff member Laurie Burke, who received a five-year pin during the anniversary celebration.

Laurie describes herself as jack of all trades.

Actually, Laurie is a caretaker, cook, dietary aide and housekeeper, Eileen says. In the five years Laurie has worked here, the job has become more fun as the number of residents has increased, she says.

Jason believes Whispering Winds’ success can be attributed to rising numbers of seniors in Western Canada, the home’s affordability and its philosophy.

Currently, it has 76 residents, ranging in age from 60 to 97, Eileen says. Many are from Pincher Creek, but some come from Fort Macleod, Crowsnest Pass and even places as far as Scotland.

Often, people move in to be near their families.

Besides cake, residents were treated to a barbecue, live music and a crib tournament, courtesy of Golden Life Management. The company hopes for many more years of service to seniors in our community.

Many parents who spoke to them during the conference were happy with its “climate,” Amanda says.

The day wrapped up with more insights from Mr. Pard and Mrs. Crow Shoe.

Mr. Pard explained to his audience that reflecting on his family history taught him something important.

His great-great-grandfather had been adopted, and was shown “unconditional love.”

“I realized how compassionate our people were,” Mr. Pard said.

He explained that the Blackfoot approach to parenting was one of “permissiveness,” meaning that a family would let young children solve problems themselves. When the children finally did, the family would immediately shower praise on them.

“That’s permissiveness,” he said. “We raised our children to go out and be more independent.”

Discipline was important, but the Piikani people did not employ corporal punishment. Instead, they threw water on misbehaving children.

Discipline was always given out by older siblings, aunts, uncles or other members of the community, but not by parents themselves.

This began to change in the 1960s, when community members were told to “mind your own business” and discipline became less common.

In part, this can be attributed to residential schools, with Mr. Pard being among the survivors. He felt that in the process, the Piikani lost something important.

To return to traditional parenting, Mr. Pard emphasized Blackfoot values, history and fostering self-esteem. It’s selfesteem that can put an end to alcoholism, drugs and suicide, he said.

As well, parents have to talk to their children more about issues.

He acknowledged that love, discipline and support in Blackfoot parenting have definite parallels with the “mainstream” approach.

Mrs. Crow Shoe also stressed traditional parenting in her speech.

“Traditional parenting has always been about raising a child to become a functional adult who can contribute positively to their family, and ultimately, society,” she said.

Healthy food, clean water, shelter, education and family love are key to this philosophy. Parents have to say no and have to reintroduce discipline, she added.

After the conference, Mr. Pard said he found the small sessions very interactive.

The school day ended with a greater understanding of and appreciation for past ways of raising Blackfoot children. It also provided some food for thought on the value to children and the community of reviving past practices.

Highlights from Heritage Acres Submitted by Gaytha Heighes Most residents of the area remember that the famed and exciting chuckwagon supper was hosted by Heritage Acres for 13 years. It was a very special attraction — lots of fun, even in the rain — and it was a good fundraiser too. Two years ago it went to the agricultural society, to our disappointment.

Just recently, the ag society asked if we were interested in taking it over again, and of course our answer was a resounding yes. Unfortunately, we have commitments in place for June and July of this year. We can’t ask people to postpone weddings and reunions and such.

Besides, we are in full swing getting ready for the Heritage Acres Annual Show, taking place July 29 to 31, with an added attraction this year. Bill Ives will be loaning us six of his miniature tractors, all running, a must-see display.

With so much already happening, and with such short notice, our board did not see it possible to host the chuckwagon supper for this year. We are prepared to host it

next year on June 16 or 17.

The 2017 supper will be preceded by a horse-related show in the afternoon, and the venue can be changed to a different place on the grounds to provide adequate shelter in case of rain — or snow; this is Alberta!

On a sad note, Heritage Acres was broken into during the winter and toolboxes and tools were stolen: saws, drills, sanders, tap and dies and many others. None have been recovered. We are wondering if any of you kind folks, especially the seniors, would have extras or tools you no longer use or need.

We need to keep our volunteers busy on workdays. We gather every Thursday, starting around 9 a.m. and quitting around 4 p.m., so that would be an excellent time to bring out your donations. You can watch the guys work, and take a walk around and see what we have been doing.

Fill a bus and help the hungry

By Brad Quarin For a second year, the Pincher Creek bus company First Student will help the Junction food bank get a good start on the summer.

On Saturday, First Student will park a school bus outside Ranchland Mall to collect food donations for its Stuff the Bus campaign.

“We like to think that none of our kids are going hungry over the summer,” says Sharon Roberts, First Student location manager.

While people are quick to donate to food banks during Christmastime, the need is yearround.

Stuff the Bus in June can be likened to Christmas in July, except that First Student doesn’t operate in July, Sharon says.

Last June, the people of Pincher Creek nearly filled the bus, and she hopes efforts this year will help the Junction

through the season.

Pincher Creek Co-op has prepared prepackaged donation bags for purchase.

These bags come in three different sizes: breakfast, essentials and spaghetti dinner bags.

Essentials, for example, contains a variety of food items such as peanut butter, pork, tuna and pastas.

People also have the option of donating individual items to the food bank. Items such as tins of food or pastas are always needed, Sharon says.

The Pincher Creek Lions will be present at the mall as well to accept cash donations. It takes $75 to fill a food hamper, so the Lions will use the donation money to make hampers or simply buy items for the shelves.

Stuff the Bus will run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sharon hopes that this time, we will actually “stuff the bus.”

Margaret Osadan (nee Squarek)

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Margaret Rose Osadan of Blairmore, who passed away peacefully on May 22, 2016, at the Chinook Regional Hospital in Lethbridge, at the age of 73, with her family providing care and comfort.

Margaret Rose Squarek was born in Hillcrest on Oct. 27, 1942, to proud parents Nick and Margaret Squarek.

She grew into a beautiful young woman who drew the attentions of a handsome and dashing young man, John Osadan. The happy couple courted for many years and wed on June 21, 1969. They lived in Hillcrest for a short time until making Blairmore their forever home, and raised two daughters whom they cherished dearly.

Margaret’s greatest joys in life were spending time with her family and friends; she loved nothing more than watching her children and only grandson grow and develop into her pride and joys. She cherished her time watching her grandson at school and sporting activities.

In her younger years, Margaret enjoyed gardening, cooking great meals and camping with family. She enjoyed many years working with AGT and Telus as a telephone operator and supervisor until her well-deserved retirement. During those golden years, she spent countless hours playing computer games while listening to the many curling and hockey games on TV. The unquestioned matriarch of our clan and the most independent, resourceful and determined lady known to us, Margaret treasured her time spent with family and friends and she will be dearly missed and fondly remembered.

Those left to mourn her passing and celebrate her life include her loving daughters, Sheryl (Trevor) Brazzoni of Hillcrest and Shelly (Tj) Barlow of Hillcrest; her cherished and only grandson, Brandan Brazzoni; her twin brother, Nick (Lois) Squarek of Hillcrest; her sister and caregiver, Florence Squarek of Blairmore; her brother-in-law Steve (Kathy) Osadan; her sisters-in-law Carol Osadan and Midge Mcintyre; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family members, as well as the many friends she made throughout her lifetime.

Margaret was predeceased by her parents, Nick and Margaret Squarek; her husband, John Osadan; her brothers Robert (Doreen) Squarek and Steve Squarek; her father-in-law, Martin Osadan; her mother-in-law, Annie Osadan; her sisters-in-law Kathy (Leon) Grosso and Vern (Frank) Edl; and her brothers-in-law Martin Osadan and Joe Osadan.

At the request of the family, there will be no funeral services held.

Joseph William Bruder Joseph William Bruder, beloved husband of Vernie Bruder, passed away on May 25, 2016, at the age of 95.

Besides his loving wife of 70 years, Joe is survived by his children Ronald (Rhonda), Carol (Clay), Jane (Walter Schauerte), Eric (Olga), Blaise (Linda), son-in-law Dennis Carney (Ann), Myron (Evelyn), David (Bev), Rhona Bartolotti, daughter-in-law Janet Bruder (Steve), James (Lynn), Paul (Chris), Carlos (Glenda), Steven (Anja), Tony (Lorraine); 48 grandchildren and 69 greatgrandchildren; and his siblings, Agatha (Murray McRae), Frank (Ann Dixon) and Rosalie (Emile Levesque).

He was predeceased by his parents, William and Eve Bruder; his son Kevin, daughter Angela Carney and daughter-in-law Tracey.

A prayer service was held on May 27, 2016, at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Pincher Creek. A funeral mass was held on May 28, also at St. Michael’s Catholic Church, with Father Silvano Vargas officiating. Interment is to take place at St. Henry’s Cemetery at a later date.
