Writer makes soup the star in new cookbook

By Erin Fairhurst Like most great ideas, local writer Joni MacFarlane’s new cookbook, 52+ Weeks of Soup, started on a low simmer and just kept gaining steam.

“I’ve always made soups,” Joni explains. “And I’ve made a lot of them over the years because I love eating them. There’s something so comforting about a good soup.”

A few years ago, Joni thought it would be fun to try making a different soup every week.

Naturally, as a writer, she couldn’t resist penning a few paragraphs about each savoury concoction.

Soon, she began snapping photos of every batch of soup and before she knew it, she’d already logged 16 weeks.

“I thought I might as well go for 52,” Joni recalls.

“Then other people started making suggestions and sharing recipes and I just couldn’t stop.”

The idea of turning her pet project into a book wasn’t even on the back burner, but after friends and family kept asking, Joni warmed to the idea.

“It was a lot of fun,” she says of transforming her hobby into a professional product. “But it was also a lot of work!”

In the end, her hard work paid off.

Her book, 52+ Weeks of Soup, consists of about 60 recipes and is divided according to season.

“There were too many that were too good to cut!” says Joni.

Each recipe features a photograph and a brief write-up. As an added bonus, measurements for ingredients are listed in both imperial and metric units.

“It’s an added detail that I think people will appreciate,” Joni says. “My hope is for people to use this book and to enjoy it.”

The book is dedicated to Joni’s husband, Brian, who she says helped to taste-test all of the soups included in the book.

However, Joni herself meticulously revisited her recipes in order to refine her ingredients and instructions. And she didn’t stop there.

“I wasn’t happy with some of the initial photos,” she recalls.

“I wanted to stage them better, so I redid about 10 batches of soup just to get the photos. We were eating soup every day for a while.”

As a vegetarian for the past 30 years, Joni was sure to include several of her favourite meatless recipes.

“Some recipes I’ve had for years, others I don’t even know where they came from,” Joni says, adding that a few close friends and family members also contributed some tried-and-true favourites.

New van rolls into town for non-emergency transfers

By Brad Quarin The new non-acute transfer van rode into the Pincher Creek Health Centre parking lot at the end of May, ready to serve Crowsnest Pass, Pincher Creek, Fort Macleod and area.

Its purpose is to transport patients to hospitals for appointments and other

non-emergencies.

The slogan on the side of the van proudly asserts its sponsorship by three local health foundations: Fort Macleod and District, Crowsnest Pass and Windy Slopes.

Local members are particularly pleased with this acquisition.

“I think it’s pretty awesome that we can free up the ambulance for emergencies … and be able to take people where they need to go,” says Windy Slopes chairwoman Donna Schauerte.

“We’re very excited about it,” says Bonnie Linderman, trustee for the Crowsnest Pass foundation. “We feel it’s going to be a real benefit, a comfort for our patients.”

Before the van rolled into town, Pincher Creek and Crowsnest Pass patients who needed to transfer to a hospital in Lethbridge or Calgary often had to ride an ambulance.

This was done even if the need for the hospital visit wasn’t life threatening, but simply for an appointment, test or consultation.

While getting a ride from family or friends would seem preferable in such situations, it wasn’t always an option.

“There’s some situations where … you just can’t take your family member,” Donna says. “I’m really glad that we’re going to have this for our area.”

Alberta Health Services representatives attended a Windy Slopes meeting, where they presented information on non-acute transfers, says Windy Slopes vice-chairwoman Maggie Olson.

Foundation members saw the potential benefit, not only to patients but to the whole area.

Everyone will be able to breathe easier knowing the ambulances are available when needed, and the vans are less costly as well, Bonnie says.

It was up to the three local health foundations to handle the bill, which they divided equally.

Windy Slopes Health Foundation contributed nearly $18,000, mainly from its raffle fundraisers.

The Crowsnest Pass foundation contributed the same amount, drawing from donations given by individuals for unspecified purposes, Bonnie says.

The Fort Macleod foundation used funds raised by volunteering at a casino for its share.

The vehicle comes equipped with a ramp, oxygen, defibrillators and basic life support kits, says Ron Lawison, the zone team lead for non-ambulance transport. It will be operated by Alberta Health Services emergency staff.

The van was obtained from Calgary and was used for five weeks before arriving to our area. It will be stored in Fort Macleod.

There are three other NAT vehicles being used in southwestern Alberta, Ron says. This one will serve our area first, but goes wherever needed.

Bonnie knows of a few patients who have used the van since its arrival, and the feedback has been positive.

Patients who previously had to lie in ambulances found it much more comfortable to sit in a seat and enjoy the scenery on the way to a hospital.

The van will provide a valuable service for many community members.

Fencing and signs protect snakes and educate public

Recently, threats emerged to a garter snake hibernaculum on the Pincher Creek. This is a place where the snakes take refuge.

So, volunteers, the Town of Pincher Creek and an army of day home children banded together to set up fencing and interpretive signage to protect their slithering friends.

“We need to embrace citizen science,” says

Wendy Ryan, who donated the fencing. “Citizen science is where citizens rally to protect any given species.”

This includes species traditionally used as symbols of evil or those that simply inspire a lot of dread, something that can hopefully be alleviated with a little education.

“Anybody can learn through this site,” Wendy says.

While she finds many adults are afraid of snakes, they are willing to take their children to

My Little Corner

At the end of May I attended the annual general meeting and convention of the Alberta Weekly Newspapers Association in Edmonton.

It was a two-for-one deal as the association also co-hosted the national conference and trade show for the Canadian Community Newspapers Association.

The three-day event allowed publishers from across the country to come together in learning and in sharing.

It was a pleasure to spend time with people from the Northwest Territories to Ontario.

It's hard to say if there was more learning taken away from the workshops or from the informal conversations over an evening drink in the hospitality suite.

With Shootin' the Breeze coming up on its fifth anniversary and a full year of AWNA membership under our belt, the conference presented an excellent opportunity to hear from others facing similar industry challenges and to brainstorm to come up with new ideas.

Some have been put into action in this issue and you'll see some changes and new features in coming weeks.

I was proud to watch Arianna Korbett of Pincher Creek step up to receive a bursary that will support her journalism studies.

She will be helping us out over the summer. You'll see some of her photos in this issue and her first story will run next week.You can read more about Arianna on page 18.

I was also humbled, yet proud, to have a story I wrote

about Lisa and Benji Husband and their living donor organ transplant receive second place for the Healthy Communities Journalism Award.

The chance to meet people who have done and who are doing amazing things in the newspaper industry is a perk of belonging to AWNA. Every person in the room was there because they are committed to newspapering – past, present and future.

Sig Sigvaldson was one of the most interesting fellows I met. His newspaper career spans 56 years. He has used the kitchen table for production and the bathroom as a darkroom. His newspapers in the Northwest Territories set a high standard for the rest of us to aspire to.

The media landscape is changing, but I strongly believe newspapers will always have a firm place, especially in rural communities. It is heartening to see Arianna pursuing journalism and my own daughter choosing communications for her field of study.

There is a bright future ahead, and never a shortage of stories to share.

Lisa and Benji are doing well, and it was coincidental timing to receive an award for their original story when the followup is in the works.

I extend warm congratulations to fellow writers at the Claresholm Local Press, the Fort Macleod Gazette and the Pincher Creek Echo on their awards.

Wendy has known of the existence of the hibernaculum near the creek for 10 years, thanks to a tip from nearby homeowners.

It became an issue recently when people evidently noticed it and tore it apart.

This led to some handling of the snakes, which Wendy says is a bad idea. Although garter snakes are non-poisonous, they are a protected species and manhandling them stresses them out.

Hoping to put an end to the trouble, she covered over the hibernaculum, only to find it disturbed again the next day.

She contacted Gord Pitt, a bylaw assistant for the Town of Pincher Creek, and he agreed that better protection was needed.

Fittingly enough, it was on Earth Day, in April, that Wendy and some neighbours went to work on this protection.

The involvement of the day home children, all under five, was a happy accident. One of the children had seen the hibernaculum and told the others about it, creating interest in a field trip, Darla says.

“I’m really, really scared of snakes,” she admits. However, she didn’t want to spread her fear to the little ones. “I think the more they experience, the more they see, the more well-rounded people they’re going to be.”

Wendy calls the children “brilliant,” as they already knew a bit about snakes, such as what they eat and why they live in the ground.

Garter snakes eat insects and fish such as minnows. Being coldblooded, they go six feet underground to avoid freezing. Here, they hibernate without eating over the winter.

Wendy took chicken wire and survey stakes from her own yard to make the fencing.

Afterwards, Fish and Wildlife officers viewed the site and judged that it would get the job done.

The town’s recreation office summarized information for interpretive signage and laminated the signs, outlining why these snakes are protected and should be left alone, Wendy says.

This will create a great learning opportunity for anyone passing by, and allow the snakes to continue their lives in peace.

St. Michael's community rallies to fill a bus for Fort McMurray

By Brad Quarin Last weekend, First Student invited Pincher Creek to help stuff a bus with donations to support the local food bank.

Now, grades 4 and 5 French students of St. Michael’s School are launching their own Stuff a Bus campaign to reach out a little further — to the people of Fort McMurray.

Although teacher Manon Thauvette will do the actual driving of the bus, her students have definitely been the driving force behind this campaign.

“They are on a mission,” she says.

“The bar is high, but we know our community can do this.”

She had given her students a social studies assignment to come up with a project to help their community or province.

Seeing the wildfire still burning near Fort McMurray, the students voted to make the remaining evacuees the beneficiaries of their project.

At this point, the Red Cross told them the organization was seeking monetary donations, but that didn’t satisfy the youth.

“They want to do something,” Mrs. Thauvette says, and money didn’t seem too tangible.

The opportunity came when the class

heard that a new evacuation centre was opening in Bonnyville and was in need of supplies. The students quickly decided to reach out to that centre.

It was the children themselves who called Bonnyville, sought the name of the centre’s co-ordinator, Ben Smith, and spoke to him. He was excited, Mrs. Thauvette says.

The students then obtained a list of needed supplies, and even drew pictures and made paintings in art class to decorate the centre.

“They just have huge hearts,” she says.

She has a bus licence from her days in the fire department and ambulance in Beaver Mines and Pincher Creek, so Mrs. Thauvette herself will do the driving to Bonnyville on Saturday.

She’s no longer in EMS, but the licence still comes in handy for class field trips.

The requested supplies are mainly toiletries and kitchen items, including brushes, combs, backpacks, all-purpose cleaners, paper plates, plastic cutlery and canned foods.

Donations should be taken to Classroom 201 or the school office by Thursday, although some donations can still be accepted on Friday, Mrs. Thauvette says.

Double the musicians, double the fun

By Erin Fairhurst The Crowsnest Pass Symphony Orchestra is teaming up with members of the Medicine Hat Community Orchestra to present a concert on Sunday.

Led by conductor Christine Bootland, the Medicine Hat contingent will arrive in Crowsnest Pass on Friday.

They’ll hit the ground running with a busy weekend of rehearsals before showcasing their hard work on Sunday.

“It’ll be like a field trip for adults,” says Debbie Goldstein, conductor of the Crowsnest Pass Symphony Orchestra.

“Once they arrive we’ll have a meet-and-greet so that we can all get to know each other and then we’ll get started with rehearsal.”

“Both orchestras have different strengths and sounds,” says Debbie, adding that the opportunity to play with new people is always a great way to learn.

“This collaboration will contribute to a larger sound and add to our musicianship.”

The concert will feature a variety of music. Each orchestra will play two to three pieces individually and then join up for three or four pieces together.

Debbie will conduct the music she’s chosen and Christine, who was a past adjudicator for bowed strings at the Crowsnest Pass Music Festival, will conduct her musical selections.

Admission to the concert is by monetary donation and funds raised will go towards the Crowsnest Pass food bank and women’s resource centre.

The concert is family-friendly and everyone is welcome.

Local writer receives journalism bursary

By Brad Quarin Arianna Korbett, a journalism student at Mount Royal University, has just completed her first year of study. She is from Pincher Creek, and was assisted with next year’s tuition through receipt of a $1,000 bursary.

“I’ve always loved writing,” Arianna says, recounting how she used to craft stories.

She realized writing might lead to a career during her Rotary Club youth exchange program experience in Zagreb, Croatia.

After setting off for Europe in 2014, she began writing a travel blog for the benefit of friends and family back home.

Her first article, telling of her stay in Croatia, was published in a Rotary Club magazine.

Originally written in English, it was translated into Croatian.

This kind of writing was good practice for a profession she would now pursue.

Arianna particularly hopes to specialize in travel journalism, of the kind you see in magazines like National Geographic.

“Everyone’s secret dream is to work for National Geographic,” she says.

However, she acknowledges that writing for that particular journal may not be a realistic goal.

According to Arianna, her first year at Mount Royal has gone well. She learned the basics in radio and print and benefited from the small class sizes, which meant plenty of one-on-one time with professors.

To secure the Fred Row Journalism Bursary from the Alberta Weekly Newspapers Association, she wrote about herself and her exploration of Europe on her application. She also submitted her travel blog.

Arianna is working full time as a nanny in Pincher Creek this summer and will also be an active contributor to Shootin' the Breeze.

She is looking forward to this as she had been warned that first-year

Volunteers needed for Darcy's Nature Walk

By Erin Fairhurst Preparations are underway for the ninth annual Darcy’s Nature Walk for Mental Wellness, and organizer Randi Lynn Rinaldi says things are shaping up nicely for the free family-friendly event.

The walk is scheduled to take place this Saturday at Fireman’s Park in Bellevue.

“We’re hoping to see a big turnout,” says Randi Lynn. “Last year we had about 300 people come out, so we’re hoping to have similar numbers, if not more.”

The event has tripled in size from its early days. “In the first year, we had about a hundred people come out,” recalls Randi Lynn. “It’s great to see how much it’s grown.”

Of course, with the growth of the event come larger organizational challenges.

“We’re looking for volunteers this year,” Randi Lynn says. “People to help with things like registration, marking the course and serving snacks.”

Darcy’s Nature Walk for Mental Wellness is an annual event organized by the Rinaldi family. It’s meant to promote mental wellness and raise awareness about mental illness.

“It’s a great opportunity to enjoy nature and just to do something for yourself,” says Randi Lynn.

The walk is supported in part by the Crowsnest Pass Health Foundation and donations are gratefully accepted.

Money raised from the event will help support future projects, such as a mental health first-aid course and a yoga-for-grief-support workshop, both scheduled for September.

Funds will also go towards the Faces of Mental Health program, designed to eliminate the stigma of mental illness.

Registration for Saturday’s nature walk opens at 9:15 a.m and the walk begins at 11 a.m. at Fireman’s Park in Bellevue.

Participants can take part in a five-kilometre trail walk or a four-kilometre paved walk through town. A free barbecue and the distribution of plenty of door prizes will follow.

Celebrate summer at Bellecrest Days

By Brad Quarin Families may not be aware of all the summer activities and events in Crowsnest Pass — events meant to just be fun and others intended to help us become more active.

So, Bellecrest Community Association is making Celebrate Summer the theme for this year’s Bellecrest Days, an annual bash hosted by the Crowsnest Pass communities of Bellevue and Hillcrest.

“We do try and showcase as much as we can locally, throughout the Pass, for summer things to do,” says Krissy Ames, director of events for the association.

This year, Bellecrest Days will take place over three days, from June 17 to 19, jazzed up with extras such as karate, drama and a slo-pitch tournament.

Although the event generally alternates between Bellevue and Hillcrest, for the second year in a row most of the festivities will be held in Bellevue.

Because Bellevue Memorial Park is an enclosed paddock, tents can be set up in advance and locked up, says Krissy, making it easier for everyone. And Hillcrest business owners are fine with holding the event in Bellevue for another year.

There will still be activities in Hillcrest this year and Hillcrest will again host Bellecrest Days in the future.

Bellecrest Days will start on the Friday with a family hike, courtesy of the Crowsnest Conservation Society.

Hikers will meet at Bellevue Memorial Park at 3 p.m. and will head to Connelly Lake, learning about local flowers and wildlife on the way.

Later, Blairmore’s Orpheum Theatre will host a free family movie at 5 p.m.

On Saturday, the parade will start down Main Street Bellevue at 11 a.m., with prizes for floats given out beforehand.

Children are welcome to dress up and decorate their bikes to join the parade, and there will be prizes for costumes and decorations.

In the nearby park — and following the parade — there will be two karate demonstrations by Karasu Studio and two demonstrations by Turning Pointe Dance Studio.

Special guests will include the Teenie Weenie Theatre Company from Waterton, who will present two short performances, and Piikani Nation dancers and drummers.

Another addition will be human foosball. Local contractors will set up the parking lot of the Old Dairy Ice Cream Shoppe for the games. Like the table version of the game, human foosball plays like soccer with two teams trying to score without using

their hands. Players are restricted to moving sideto-side along their pole and must keep their hands on it at all times. Anyone can give the game a try.

Reflecting the Celebrate Summer theme, pamphlets with information on summer events from Fernie to Pincher Creek will be handed out during the parade.

There will be a money tunnel game at Bellevue Memorial Park with prizes such as gift certificates to venues like Bellevue Underground Mine, the Crowsnest Pass golf course, Frank Slide Interpretive Centre and Pincher Creek's Kootenai Brown Pioneer Village.

A number of food offerings will be available throughout the day, starting with a pancake breakfast at Hillcrest Fish and Game Hall from 8 to 10 a.m.

There will also be Mexican street corn, a waffle wagon and a sushi truck along with the staple hamburgers and hotdogs.

Meanwhile, the first Bellecrest Days slo-pitch tournament will get underway Friday at 6 p.m. at the Hillcrest Ball Complex. It will continue on Saturday and Sunday, starting at 10 a.m.

Harvest Coffeehouse reaps excellent online reviews

By Brad Quarin Word of mouth is always valuable to a business, especially when the comments are good. And, in a digital age, such comments can reach a great distance.

Having racked up a number of glowing reviews on the travel website TripAdvisor, Harvest Coffeehouse recently received tangible recognition of their worth — with a certificate of excellence from the site.

The Pincher Creek business was emailed at the end of May, informing them that they would be receiving the honour.

“I think this certificate is … positive reinforce-

ment,” says owner Aynsley Baker. “We’re doing a good job.”

Out of 60 TripAdvisor reviews, Harvest accumulated 41 “excellents” and zero “terribles,” with a rating of 4.5 out of five. It was also ranked first of the 18 eating establishments in Pincher Creek.

This helped the business secure the certificate of excellence, which is awarded to businesses that hold at least a four rating. Reviews over a 12-month period are considered.

More important than the certificate are the reviews themselves, and they do help Harvest.

In fact, on the Saturday after receiving the certificate, Harvest was visited by two large groups from

Calgary and the United States. Both groups had read about the coffee house on TripAdvisor, says general manager Tracey Hoffman.

“I think TripAdvisor is a very important judge of performance from a visitor’s point of view,” Aynsley says. “Since Pincher Creek is an area where there are a lot of visitors, it’s something we put weight onto.”

This is especially important in the summer as tourism increases, with Pincher Creek being seen as the “gateway to Waterton.”

positive or negative, Tracey says.

Recurring themes among the reviews are “fresh food” and “I’ll be back,” Tracey says. She often remembers the specific customers who wrote to them.

One favourite review is from a customer who liked the Americano and appreciated the fact that Harvest could accommodate his gluten-sensitive son, and she was able to write a personal response.

Another favourite is from Facebook rather than TripAdvisor. The author is a Canadian who spent some time in New Zealand.

Upon returning, the customer was quickly reminded of the hit-and-miss nature of coffee in Canadian coffee houses. However, he wrote that he found the coffee in Harvest to be an exception.

Achieving such a high rating took hard work and can be credited to great staff and customer service, Aynsley and Tracey say.

They feel that each employee has something unique to contribute to Harvest, from “cheeky” banter with customers to fantastic baking skills.

Customers also feel comfortable talking to Harvest staff, and that’s part of what brings them back, Tracey says.

That’s along with the baking, with everything made fresh and in-house.

The coffee house’s motto when it launched in 2012 was “Fresh, local, from scratch,” and that’s remained constant, Aynsley says.

Of course, the certificate also invites Harvest to stay on top of what it was honoured for, providing a challenge for the future.

Crowsnest Pass Boys and Girls Club members got their hands on 17 shiny new mountain bikes last month.

The club sought the bikes to give children a chance to ride if they don’t have their own.

The members were excited to see the new wheels. “I like it, because it’s blue and white,” says Sydney. The club member does a lot of biking, but not mountain biking.

The new program was made possible by a fall 2015 grant of $12,000 from the Community Foundation of Lethbridge and Southwestern Alberta.

The Community Foundation believes youth groups are a unique and important service to support, says communications co-ordinator Caitlin Gajdostik.

The $12,000 was matched jointly by the Boys and Girls Club, United Riders of Crowsnest and Sweet Riders in time and training.

Fifteen bikes were purchased from Blairmore Alpenland and another two were donated by UROC members Dr. Kristy Penner, Dr. Lindsay Swinton and Dr. Stephan Annand.

Piitaapoyi group hosts youth basketball tourney Submitted by Velma Little Mustache A youth basketball tourney was held May 21 at the Piikani Community Hall with about 60 youth registered between the ages of 12 and 21.

Each player registered received a T-shirt and a lunch coupon and names were drawn to form six teams.

The event’s theme, Passing It to the Next Generation, opened up with a blessing and honour song from Piikani elder Morris Little Wolf and opening remarks from elder and Piitaapoyi member Peter Strikes With A Gun. The highlight of the event was the awarding of a medal of honour and an honour song by the Piitaapoyi group to all the former Piikani Nation basketball players.

The Piitaapoyi group invited Shay Yellow Horn, a former college basketball player and role model, to address the youth with his basketball highlights and encourage them to try their best.

Peter Strikes With A Gun acknowledged all the volunteers and thanked Piikani Youth and Education, McMan Youth Services and the family of the late Kevin Holloway for contributing to another successful youth event.

The champions received gold medals and

hoodies; second and third received silver and bronze medals respectively. The results are as follows: Gold medal winners: Young Guns — Dawn Many Guns, Ashton Yellow Horn, Joseph Plain Eagle, Riley North Peigan, Isiah North Peigan, Josh Cross Child and Chris Scout.

Former basketball players competed in a three-point fun challenge. Winners received hoodies and everyone else received a T-shirt.

Submitted by Ritch Braun The first outdoor track meet of the 2016 season took 10 Passtrak athletes to Calgary on May 14 and 15.

They participated in 47 events during the two-day competition and each athlete experienced success in one form or another.

Naoise Gelber, who is seven years old, competed against athletes up to four years older in the peewee category. She ran the 150-metre race in 27.47 seconds and the 1,000 metres in four minutes 55.62 seconds. She then cleared 1.54 metres in the standing long jump and finished the day with a 4.82-metre toss in the shot put. All four performances set new Passtrak club records in Naoise’s age group.

Sawyer Sawatzky had four events as well and he competed in the peewee boys division. He recorded 11.47 seconds in the 60 metres, and 2:33.51 in the 600-metre race. He leaped 2.89 metres in the long jump, and his best result of the track meet came in the discus, where he threw the implement 11.95 metres for second place out of 20 competitors.

Jack Bailey was also in the peewee boys age group. He contested eight events during the two days of competition. His 60-metre time was 12.12 seconds and the 150 metres took him 30.11 seconds. The 600-metre race was completed in 2:53.95 and the 1,000 metres took 5:15.94.

Jack produced a standing long jump of 1.49 metres and a running long jump of 2.94 metres.

His best throw in the shot put landed at the 4.13metre mark and his highest placing of the meet saw him finish in sixth place in the discus with a distance of 10.73 metres.

Bronwyn Gelber represented Passtrak in the peewee girls category. She finished 12th in the 150 metres in 23.82 seconds. She moved up to fifth place in the 1,000 metres, where she timed out at 4:06.16. She earned a bronze medal in the shot put with a 5.89-metre attempt and then grabbed a silver medal with a distance of 1.86 metres in the standing long jump.

Ronan Gelber had five events in the bantam boys division. He ran 25.10 seconds in the 150 metres, then 3:01.37 in the 800 metres. His third See PASSTRAK, continued on page 27

Chinook Multi 4-H report Submitted by Justin Nelson We had a 4-H district fun day on May 13. It was a Nerf war at Canyon School.

We set up tumble pads for cover and we played free-for-all, capture the flag, and team deathmatch in the dark with strobe lights.

On May 14 we did highway cleanup.

It was cold and wet, but fun. Some people even found cellphones. Afterward we went to Luigi’s for pop and pizza while having a meeting.

Paige Richards was the busiest Passtrak athlete, taking on nine events in the bantam girls category over the two days. Paige’s hurdle events proved to be her strong point at this meet. In the 200-metre hurdles she placed fifth out of 15 athletes in 35.24 seconds. In the 80-metre hurdles she moved up a spot to fourth out of 27 competitors by speeding to a 15.73 second-place finish. Her other races were the 80-metre sprint, where she ran 11.70 seconds, then 21.55 seconds in the 150 metres, and finally the 800 metres, where she clocked 3:16.08. Her long jump result was 3.21 metres and her high jump was 1.05 metres. In the throwing events she tossed the discus 12.37 metres and heaved the shot put 4.55 metres.

Alina Pharis accompanied Paige in the bantam girls division. She recorded 25.31 seconds in the 150 metres and 3:22.55 in the 800 metres. Her high jump topped out at one metre and her highest finish came with a 5.88-metre result in the shot put, where she placed ninth out of 35.

Mathias Gelber ran three races in the midget boys group. He finished eighth in the 800 metres, where he ran 2:18.24. He moved up to sixth place in the 200 metres with a time of 26.54. His best finish was fourth place in the 2,000 metres with a time of 6:47.21, which carved over 16 seconds off the previous Passtrak club record for that age group.

Zion Ratudradra was one of two Passtrak athletes in the youth age group. He ran the 1,500 metres on Day 1 and recorded a 4:53.53 result. His 800-metre race on Day 2 was a much stronger performance. He cut four seconds off his previous best time to finish the race in 2:15.41.

Ethan Richards was Passtrak’s other male youth in the track meet. He ran 54.63 seconds in the 400 metres for 10th place. That time was only two-tenths of a second off the current Passtrak club record. He cleared 5.67 metres in the long jump to pick up a silver medal. He then ran 23.74 seconds in the 200 metres, which set a new Passtrak club record and earned him fifth place.

In his 100-metre heat, Ethan ran 11.53 seconds, which missed the qualifying time for the Canadian national championships by 0.03 seconds. In the final he fixed that by stopping the clock at 11.36 seconds for fourth place and a new Passtrak club record.

Unfortunately, the wind reading was slightly over the legal amount, so he is looking forward to his next opportunity to accomplish the task.

Recycling becomes social with town roundups

By Brad Quarin Reusing and recycling will be made easier and more social in Pincher Creek and Crowsnest Pass this month, with roundups and fairs planned.

“We are looking forward to helping to keep recyclables and reusable items out of our landfill,” says Marie Everts, the marketing, events and economic development officer for the Town of Pincher Creek.

Pincher Creek will hold its Recycling Roundup and Reuse Fair at Ranchland Mall on June 18 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Numerous service groups will be part of the day. The Pincher Planters will be exchanging plants while the Junction food bank will collect seeds for its Grow a Row program.

Residents can give their old eyeglasses, cell-

phones, can tabs and hearing aides to Lions Club members for reuse and recycling.

DBS Waste Management will accept paints, chemicals and toxic substances, while Crowsnest/ Pincher Creek Landfill Association staff will take metal items that can’t be recycled.

Members of the Pincher Spray Park Society will even be present to serve breakfast and a barbecue lunch, Marie says.

With the Reuse Fair, citizens can swap household and yard items that are still in good condition but no longer used. But no fridges, please!

Crowsnest Pass will have a similar service with its Toxic and E-waste Roundup on June 18 at Crowsnest Sports Complex in Coleman. This roundup will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Municipal residents can take their oils, old tires, paints, household cleaning fluids, sealers, varnishes and empty paint cans to the arena, says Deserie Michalsky, administrative assistant for the Operations Department.

The municipality will also be accepting unwanted TVs, computers, tablets, laptops, monitors, servers and keyboards at the arena for recycling.

Appliances like toasters and microwave ovens must be disposed of through Service Plus, a program for disposal of large items.

Under this program, the landfill will accept items in Coleman at the arena from June 16 to 17 at 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., and on June 18 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The Hillcrest town shop will have the service from June 20 to 22 at 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Finally, the Blairmore town shop will host Service Plus from June 23 to 24 from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and June 25 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
