“I’m very delighted that they’re doing this as a fundraiser for the Boun Lod Fund,” says Gordon.

Cathy and Gordon first heard of Boun Lod through a Laotian friend. In 2007, the couple were teaching English in a college in Laos when they first met her.

Shortly after her birth in 2003, a candle fell onto the mosquito netting on her crib.

When Gordon and Cathy met her, she was disfigured: her hair was burnt back, her mouth drooped, and her head tilted because of the scarring. Her speech was impaired and scar tissue threatened her growth.

She was obviously loved and seemed happy, but Gordon and Cathy saw an opportunity to make hard times ahead easier.

Although Boun Lod was a world away, the couple managed to get locals interested in her case by simply telling her story and showing them photos.

She’s not the only person in need, but southern

Albertans felt a connection seeing the pictures and knowing the name, Gordon says.

Over the years, the people of Pincher Creek led others around the world in sponsoring a number of her visits to the Shriners Hospital in Cincinnati.

While the hospital is free, help was needed for her travel and living expenses.

Boun Lod is back in Cincinnati for another year of treatments, which are now mainly cosmetic. Despite the former threat to her growth, Gordon says, she has become tall and slim.

She has also been able to go to summer camp in northern Kentucky, and was excited about the new experience.

Boun Lod will turn 13 in September. She has come a long way since Pincher Creek first rallied behind her at age four.

“It’s been a long haul for the community, and I think the community should be quite proud of the support that they’ve given her,” Gordon says. “She really is making good progress.”

Piikani community rallies for homeless awareness

By Brad Quarin If people were asked to picture homelessness, odds are they would start by imagining a city.

However, homelessness is a social problem found in almost every First Nations community, even the small ones, says Darrell Smith, project co-ordinator for Piikani Supportive Housing.

“A lot of times, we’re invisible, where it’s not really acknowledged,” he says. “It’s acknowledged in the big cities, but never in our own home communities.”

There are 28 people living in the homeless shelter in the Piikani Nation alone, says Hope Grier-Stewart, summer event planner on the reserve.

“For us being in our own traditional land, we always took care of each other,” Darrell says.

To bring more attention to the issue in our

own backyard, Piikani Supportive Housing launched its first annual Homeless Awareness Day. The event was not a fundraiser, but was inspired to bring the community and its agencies together to “see” homelessness and learn how to address this social problem.

By an unfortunate coincidence, the roof blew off the homeless shelter the day before the event.

Attendees at the Homeless Awareness Day were assured it would be repaired.

“We’re all going to work together as a community to get it back,” Darrell says. The cost of the project may be covered by insurance.

Despite the bad news, he assured the crowd that the event was not meant to dwell on negatives.

“Today’s going to be a positive day and a

good day,” he said. “Just remember to be positive, and be good to each other. We’re all here together.”

Elders expressed their gratitude for the community participation and unity.

The event started off with a walk across Brocket, from Peigan Community Hall to Crowlodge Park. Over 40 people and even three dogs showed up at the hall that morning.

Co-ordinators arranged for presentations by the RCMP, EMS and community health to follow, Hope says.

They also screened the documentary Where is Home?, which was shot in Lethbridge.

She feels that overall, the day was constructive, and that attendees kept their spirits up and learned a great deal.

“People are looking at trapping as a way to get closer to the earth, to live that pioneer life. Trappers love the balance of wildlife, they are passionate stewards of the land.”

She explains that the Rendezvous is a huge attraction for “our very big extended family.” It’s a family reunion of sorts, and promotes the value of family having fun together. She says she has “made wonderful friends in the south country,” and looks forward to connecting with them.

The ATA has a very strong membership, with 24 locals, and is constantly growing, Anne says. They strive to be educators on trapping, work closely with the provincial government, and support communities throughout the province with charitable donations.

Admission to the Rendezvous is $10 per day for adults, and free for kids 12 and under. The daily fee for a family of two adults and two kids is $20. The Saturday-night banquet and dance featuring Tim Hus Band is $49 per person. The banquet starts at 6:30 p.m. and the music at 9:30 p.m., with limited tickets available.

Bellevue wrestler joins Bellecrest Days this weekend

By Brad Quarin There’s going to be a lot of action packed into Bellecrest Days this weekend, including demonstrations of karate, dance and drama, courtesy of local groups.

You can now add wrestling to that list, with Bellevue’s own Ed Gatzky set to bring his company Pure Power Wrestling for its Bellecrest Days debut.

“We’re very anxious and looking forward to once again blowing people’s minds and getting the awe factor,” he says. “We’ve got some pretty cool things planned.” But he’s keeping all that a surprise.

Krissy Ames, director of events for the Bellecrest Community Association, says she’s excited about the late addition.

It’s nice to welcome someone like Ed back to Crowsnest Pass. “He’s very passionate about giving back to the community,” she says.

Ed achieved fame as the wrestler known as the Gothic Knight before officially retiring in October 2015. However, Pure Power Wrestling is

still going strong.

He is not personally expected to perform in Bellecrest Days, but serves as “the disciplinarian” for his wrestlers.

The company offers family-friendly entertainment, and Ed hopes their positive approach can win over people who don’t care for pro wrestling. While this is the company’s first time at Bellecrest Days, he has performed in Rum Runner Days in Crowsnest Pass before, most recently in 2013.

He finds Crowsnest Pass audiences to be “some of the best fans anywhere you can find in Canada.”

He still has a house in Bellevue, so it's easy for him to hear feedback on his company's performances, and much of it has been positive.

Recently, he spoke with the owners of the Bellevue restaurant Chefs on 2 Thirteen, and they thought it would be a great idea to showcase Pure Power Wrestling in Bellecrest Days.

Ironically, when Ed was growing up in Bellevue he wasn’t a huge fan of wrestling, but his grandpa sure was, and they often watched Stampede Wrestling on TV together.

Still, in a way, his career is rooted in Bellevue. His mom gave him his own weights and he began lifting at 15, eventually becoming a bodybuilder.

Later, at the Lethbridge Fitness Centre, star wrestler Bret Hart stopped by. At 275 pounds, Ed was discovered and hired to run Bret’s security.

The Bellecrest Days wrestling performances will take place on Main Street Bellevue on Saturday at 4 p.m. and Sunday at 11 a.m. The space is provided by Chefs on 2 Thirteen.

Because the wrestling has a story, Ed recommends going Sunday to see how it ends.

What’s more, Ed wants Pure Power Wrestling to be a part of future Bellecrest Days.

“I hope we become kind of a mainstay,” he says. “We’re absolutely going to blow people away.”

My Little Corner Last week I hit the road home to Saskatchewan but forgot to do something important — I neglected to wish my dad a Happy Father's Day before I left.

Sorry, Dad! Prior to moving to Pincher Creek, I always lived close enough to zip home for special occasions from wherever I was. I wish it was as easy to do that now.

Instead, I get home to see my parents when I can and savour the time while I'm there.

For now, this includes setting up my office on their dining room table to look after whatever needs doing with the paper. I'm glad this now takes less time than it once did.

I try to get together with a few friends as well, but there never seems to be enough hours in the day to do all I'd like to do.

This time around, I was disappointed to cut short Dad's storytelling to hit the road.

He had barbecued supper for my mom, my sister and me and we were enjoying a cup of tea and visiting after the feast.

Marcy asked about someone who had been bitten by a tick. I don't think we ever got back to that subject, but Dad shared many tales we hadn't heard before.

While we are separated by many miles, the warmth of family lives within me and keeps me company.

Happy Father's Day to a great guy who makes me smile and who I love very much!

Luminaries will brighten Relay for Life In the first hour of sales last Friday, organizers of the upcoming Relay for Life found there was great interest in luminaries.

The luminaries are a nice touch to the relay, a nationwide fundraiser held for the Canadian Cancer Society that is taking place at the Pincher Creek agricultural grounds on June 25.

“It’s so touching. It makes me want to cry just thinking about it,” said Maggie Olson, who was selling luminary bags.

Shortly before dusk, battery-operated candles placed inside the luminaries are turned on for the “lap of silence” in remembrance of lost lives and to pay tribute to survivors.

Participants make this last trip around the course shortly before 11 p.m.

Many luminaries are dedicated to a lost loved one, a survivor or in support of a patient undergoing treatment. However, anyone can buy one without dedicating it to a specific person. Luminaries sell for $5 each, with the money going to cancer research.

They will be on sale again Friday afternoon at Ranchland Mall.

Crowsnest Pass bike festival continues to grow

By Brad Quarin This will be a memorable third year for the Rumhead Enduro and Bootleg Bike Fest, a mountain bike race and festival hosted by the United Riders of Crowsnest.

The event, from June 24 to 26, will see the addition of a race, the Caribou Brewing Time Trial.

There will also be another trail in the enduro.

The BC Enduro Series, a race series company, has even added this event to its schedule.

“They actually approached us, looking at what we were doing, liked what we were doing, and heard really great things about our event,” says Andrew Fairhurst, UROC president.

Despite the name, the BC Enduro Series supports events in Alberta and British Columbia, as well as in other countries, UROC vice-president John Redekopp says.

The partnership eases the work burden on UROC and offers more contacts. “It will easily double our race participants,” he says.

However, UROC is still largely organizing the 3” and wide Rumhead Enduro willversion continue to need volun-

teers to run it, Andrew says.

As with previous years, the Rumhead Enduro will run mainly through the York Creek area. Enduro allows riders to bike uphill together, while only timing downhill racing.

“It’s more of a social way to race,” he explains.

There are pro and open categories for men and women of various age groups.

This year riders will begin and end the race at Pass Powderkeg lodge, which will host the awards and banquet on Sunday, June 26.

In the York Creek basin, bikers will now take on another “epic” trail, Big Bear. The trail existed before, but UROC has been improving it, he says.

The purpose of the bikefest is to celebrate mountain biking and Crowsnest Pass trails, John says.

Attendees can check out bike demos and try out a selection of mountain bikes for at no cost.

Children can also get involved. There’s a kids clinic, fun race and scavenger hunt happening in Pete’s Park in Blairmore.

The Rumhead Enduro itself has drawn registration from all over Western Canada and as far as Australia, which can be credited to social media.

“We’re pretty proud of how we’ve marketed the Crowsnest Pass and its trails,” John says.

The success in bringing people to the Pass may be a good reason to support the event by volunteering.

Volunteers correspond with local authorities and the BC Enduro Series, upload maps, man the aid station, time the event and lead bikers onto the course.

That’s not counting the volunteers who spend the rest of the year maintaining the trails.

Crowsnest Pass Health Foundation update Submitted by Bonnie Linderman The Crowsnest Pass Health Foundation will mark its 20th year of existence in 2016. The board consists of about 10 volunteers who meet on a monthly basis.

In consultation with hospital management, decisions are made on purchases that would most improve the care given by Crowsnest Pass Health Centre doctors and nurses to citizens of the area.

These purchases are made from funds kindly donated to the foundation.

The foundation is holding its annual Kathy Allsop Memorial Golf Tournament on June 24 at Crowsnest Pass Golf and Country Club.

Kathy Allsop was a health-care educator, registered nurse and site manager at Crowsnest Pass Health Centre.

For years, she served as a trustee, then chaired the foundation. She was an avid golfer and supporter of the foundation’s annual golf tournament.

To honour her memory, the event has been permanently renamed the Kathy Allsop Memorial Golf Tournament.

The cost of participation is $125 per person and the

The proceeds from this year’s golf tournament will go towards purchasing a bariatric bed, which gradually progresses patients from lying in bed, to sitting up, to standing.

This will greatly assist staff and patients in both acute care and continuing care.

Some recent purchases include trauma lights and a slit lamp for the emergency department; surgical tools and scopes for the operating suite; furniture, shadow boxes and patient lifts for continuing care; an electrocardiograph machine for acute care; a sleeper-recliner for the maternity suite; and TVs and comfort items for the dialysis unit.

Funds were used by volunteers to landscape the hospital grounds; other funds were provided to the Dixie Weber Memorial Staff Education Bursary, which helps local health care staff maintain and enhance their skills.

Donated funds have also helped purchase items such as a pain pump and furniture for the palliative care room.

Beaver Mines community plans weed walk

By Brad Quarin The Beaver Mines Community Association invites interested participants to join an invasive weed walk through the hamlet on June 30.

Kelly Cooley, who has been involved in invasive species management since the mid 1980s and owns the business CoolPro Solutions, has agreed to lead the walk.

Kelly battles invasive species throughout southern Alberta, so he is eager to share his expertise with his neighbours.

“This is close to home,” he says.

During the event, he will walk with volunteers around the Beaver Mines area pointing out different kinds of weeds.

He will describe how these species arrived in Beaver Mines and

explain why we should be concerned about their presence.

Weeds found in Beaver Mines include blue weed, oxeye daisy and the tall buttercup.

The oxeye daisy and tall buttercup are both attractive, and were indeed brought to the area for their esthetic quality, Kelly says. However, they can dominate our habitat and pose a number of problems.

The invasive weed walk will be held a week before the Blue Weed Blitz, held by the Pincher Creek Watershed Group, which Kelly will also attend.

“Lots of weeding going on that day,” he says.

By Brenda Shenton I spent a wonderful evening at the Pincher Creek library attending a multimedia presentation that brought a book to life. It was so soothing and calming, I could have closed my eyes and drifted away to the majestic splendour of a mountain park in all its glory. But there was no need — it was right in front of me.

Ian Wilson and his wife, Jacinthe Lavoie, have published a beautiful volume documenting the natural beauty found in Waterton Lakes National Park. Waterton Wild: Flora and Fauna of a Special Place was showcased with music, voice, special effects and stunning photos from the book.

The culmination of four years of hiking this World Heritage site, their retirement endeavour “is a labour of love,” Ian says.

Jacinthe’s background as a researcher and her love of flowers (she is named after one) helped in documenting their hikes, and Ian’s keen eye for detail and careful observation techniques are evident throughout the book.

“This is a book about seeing the small details and the larger panoramas” that dot the landscape, Ian says. “Waterton is an amazing place for colours in all seasons.”

They recommend “going slowly and being aware of what is around us,” he says. Both the book and the presentation paint a colourful portrait of what this area of the world has to offer for nature lovers.

Published by their own company, Hyacinth Press (after her name in English), this will be a treasured addition for your library, and the format makes it a great candidate for gift giving.

The personal narrative accompanying the photos in the book is wonderful, providing welcome descriptors of the flowers and animals portrayed on its pages. This is documentation of the park at its finest.

“We did this to share our passion for the park,” Ian says.

He writes in the introduction, “For a flower lover and a nature photographer, this was utopia.”

And it shows. I was in awe of the quality, especially the natural lighting in the photographs, found throughout the book. Ian best describes his technique: “Photography means writing with light and I try to think this when I am taking a photograph.”

The presentation was an eye feast for this photographer and lover of wildflowers.

As part of the Waterton Wildflower Festival, Ian and Jacinthe will again host their multimedia presentation June 20 at 7:30 p.m. at the Falls Theatre. It is worth the trip and on my to-do list for next week. Admission is free, with donations going to the festival itself.

After recently touring it throughout the area, both of them are excited to be hosting the presentation in the very area that inspired it.

They hope to share, through their presentation and the book, that “It is quite beneficial to slow down, and look around, and see all that is around you.”

The book is available for $32.95 at Pincher Office Products and Kootenai Brown Pioneer Village in Pincher Creek, Crockets Trading Company in Bellevue and many stores in Waterton.

Farmers markets ready for the season

By Brad Quarin Fresh produce, baked goods and much more will soon be available at local farmers markets in Crowsnest Pass and Pincher Creek.

This month will see the launch of Crowsnest Community Market and the return of Pincher Pioneer Country Market.

Crowsnest Community Market is being developed by a group of six people, who hope to form a Crowsnest Community Market Society.

“Our goal is to create a market that’s not just for people to come to shop, but a community gathering place,” says Jen Houze, one of the principal instigators.

The market will feature homemade items and at least two produce trucks, as well as entertainers, non-profit groups and local businesses. It will offer food, crafts, art and home business products.

Stores on main street Blairmore are invited to open their doors during the evening of the market, she says.

The idea was inspired by Grande Prairie’s evening market.

Someone posting on Facebook suggested that Crowsnest Pass try it out and a group of individuals decided to do just that.

Crowsnest Community Market will be held in Gazebo Park in Blairmore, which provides ample space for as many as 60 vendors.

That is a future goal but, for the first year, organizers are hoping for 15 to 20, Jen says.

Tent space for vendors costs between $10 and $20.

Crowsnest Community Market will open on June 30 and will operate on Thursday evenings from 4 to 8 p.m. until Sept. 8.

Meanwhile, Pincher Pioneer Country Market will run in the Pincher Creek arena on Fridays from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., from June 24 to Oct. 7.

This year there are two new market managers. Since Tracy Glen stepped down, Heather Dodd and Kimberly Hurst have taken over management.

“It’s a wonderful market that’s been around for a long time,” Kimberly says. “We felt it important to keep it going.”

The market managers are appealing for more vendors and more variety, particularly homemade goods such as gardening products, honey and leatherworks.

Kimberly feels that the Pincher Creek market is distinct for its vendors, some of whom have been involved for years.

This year they will offer everything from fresh produce to homemade wine, baking, flour and a waffle wagon, and one vendor will serve lunch during each event. Menus will be posted on Facebook.

The Cowley Lions continue as sponsors of the market.

Thank your heritage heroes

By Brad Quarin The wealth of history and historical resources in Pincher Creek, Crowsnest Pass and area is staggering, and speaks to the amount of time and effort offered by local people.

In Pincher Creek, Kootenai Brown Pioneer Village preserves an impressive collection of historic buildings and artifacts.

Near the town, Heritage Acres Farm Museum invites visitors to explore our agricultural heritage, kept alive in the form of buildings and equipment.

Crowsnest Pass remembers its heritage with Crowsnest Museum, Frank Slide Interpretive Centre and Bellevue Underground Mine, all of which offer a treasure of artifacts and stories.

A person can simply walk through downtown Coleman and see the historic fabric of this town.

This whole area has been designated Coleman National Historic Site.

None of this happened by accident.

It took numerous “heritage heroes” to achieve this degree of preservation of our past.

The Alberta Historical Resources Foundation grants Heritage Awards to those heroes. Nominations are open until July 15.

Sugar Bootybarre offers unique workout

By Arianna Korbett Pliés, calf rises, light weights, leg lifts — this all sounds like something from a dance class, but it’s part of the Sugar Bootybarre workout. Taught

by Jayna Adair, the class features moves from pilates, dance and yoga, as well as some cardio, that tone and strengthen the entire body.

“It’s an all-over body workout that doesn’t leave you feeling sore the next day,” Jayna says.

The workout focuses on making Jayna Adair demonstrates her physical prowess. tiny one-inch movements, also known as isometric movements, and using low resistance. Isometric movements fire up the muscles, but don’t stretch them so much as to tear or become strained. Even though the workout may not feel as intense as others, it is very efficient at toning and strengthening the body, without the achy muscles afterwards.

Jayna’s studio is located upstairs at Monster Fitness in Pincher Creek. Pink ballet barres line the walls, and light weights, floor sliders, yoga mats and resistance balls are provided for the class. Bootybarre begins with a warm-up, then proceeds into an arm workout using the weights and sliders.

At the barre, squats, lunges, and leg lifts work on the legs and glutes as well

as abdominal muscles.

The ab workout uses the barre and yoga mats to help with crunches and V-sits.

The class ends with some yoga and stretching.

Sugar Bootybarre has been welcomed warmly into the community. Each class has 10 to 15 people, filling up all the available space on the barres.

Jayna says she always sees new people dropping in to check it out, along with the regulars who try to attend most classes.

Classes are Monday evenings from 5 to 6, Photos by Jessica Maunsell Photography Wednesday evenings from 7:30 to 8:30, Friday mornings from 9 to 10, and Saturday mornings from 7:45 to 8:45. Drop-ins are always welcome.

Jayna grew up in Pincher Creek, and studied environmental sciences at the University of Victoria. She leads an active lifestyle with her husband, Keith, and their two busy boys — Acey, 3, and Arlo, 1.

She has always loved working out, and enjoys all different types of fitness classes. She wanted to instruct a fitness class of her own, and had never been so excited about a class until she tried a barre class in Calgary.

Jayna plans to continue the barre classes as long as there is interest, and they will run year-round.

Passtrak athletes fare well at provincials Submitted by Ritch Braun The provincial championships for tykes (under age 10 in 2016), peewees (10 and 11) and bantams (12 and 13) took place in St. Albert on May 28 and 29.

Passtrak was well represented, with eight athletes participating in 58 events over the two days of competition. Overall, they generated 12 lifetime-best performances out of a possible 21 and set 21 new Passtrak club records for their age groups. They also picked up two silver medals and one bronze for their efforts.

Naoise Gelber had six events in the tyke girls age group. She had a standing long jump of 1.35 metres, a running long jump of 2.65 metres and a distance of 3.36 metres in the medicine-ball toss.

She ran the 60 metres in 11.59 seconds and the 300 metres in one minute 7.34 seconds. Her highest finish was a fifth place out of 34 athletes with a 12.51-metre result in the ball throw. Every one of her performances except the standing long jump was a new Passtrak club record for her age group.

Rowan Watson had six events in the tyke boys division. He ran 12.08 seconds in the 60 metres

and 1:16.52 in the 300 metres. He threw the medicine ball 2.03 metres and his best ball throw was 5.25 metres. His standing long jump was 1.40 metres and his running long jump 2.43 metres.

All six of those efforts set new Passtrak club records for his year of birth.

Ashley Watson had the same six events in the tyke girls group. She ran her 60 metres in 11.75 seconds and her 300 metres in 1:05.35, which set a new Passtrak club record. She cleared 2.57 metres in the long jump and placed sixth out of 34 athletes in the ball throw with a 12.05 metre effort. She set a new club record in the medicine-ball toss, with 3.45 metres for fourth out of 29. Her highest finish was a bronze medal for a 1.63-metre standing long jump and another new club record.

Sawyer Sawatzky had eight events in two days in the peewee division. His race results were 11.54 seconds in the 60 metres, 30.01 seconds in the 150 metres, 2:35.63 in the 600 metres and 1:08.69 in the 300 metres, which set a new club record for his year of birth. He produced a 90-centimetre clearance in high jump and a lifetime best of

Michael Paul Jansen 1958 – 2016

It is with heavy hearts that we announce sudden passing of Michael Jansen of Coleman on June 3, 2016, in Crowsnest Pass. He was 57.

Michael was born on Oct. 2, 1958, in Victoria, B.C., to proud parents Jacqueline Bouchard and Glenn (Walter) Jansen. Mike was raised in Victoria with his loving brother, Steven.

He graduated from Claremont High School in Victoria and continued his education and became a journeyman welder, which became a career that he loved. Mike proudly served in the Canadian Armed Forces from March 2, 1976, to June 15, 1979.

Mike married Evelyn Hinde in 1981 and they were blessed with two beautiful daughters, Melissa and Bernadette.

Mike loved spending time outdoors, camping, fishing and travelling. He also enjoyed singing and karaoke as well as playing pool, cribbage and darts at the Legion.

Everyone who knew Mike liked and respected him. He lived his life with honour, integrity and no regrets. He leaves his family with countless wonderful memories. Mike will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by all who knew him.

He is survived by his loving companion, Cheri; her sons, Darnell, David and Brendan; his mother, Jacqueline Bouchard; his devoted daughters, Melissa (Ryan) and Bernadette (Jonathan); his brother, Steven (Sherry); his cherished granddaughter, Kierra; and the many friends he made throughout his life.

He was predeceased by his father, Glenn (Walter) Jansen, and his stepfather, Eugene Bouchard.

The visitation was held on June 8, 2016, at Fantin’s Funeral Chapel, and the memorial service was held on June 9, 2016, at Fantin’s Funeral Chapel in Blairmore.

In her throwing events, she tossed the shot put 5.13 metres and then earned a silver medal in the turbo javelin, in a field of 33 athletes, with a new Passtrak club record of 13.74 metres.

Jack Bailey accompanied Sawyer in the eight peewee boys events. He ran 12.26 seconds in the 60-metre race and 32.23 seconds and in the 150 metres. He set a new club record of 1:09.96 in the 300 metres and then sliced nine seconds off his previous best time in the 600 metres by finishing in 2:44.29. In his throws, he produced a 3.98metre shot put and a 6.67-metre toss in the turbo javelin for a new club record. He had a one-metre high jump and a lifetime best of 2.95 metres in the long jump.

Ronan Gelber represented Passtrak in eight events in the bantam boys age group. He ran 13.65 seconds in the 80 metres and 18.43 seconds in the 80-metre hurdles. His 300-metre time of 57.20 seconds set a new Passtrak club record and he had a lifetime best of 2:57.40 in the 800 metres.

He leaped one metre in the high jump and 3.11 metres in the long jump. His best discus flew out to 15.81 metres and he improved his shot put by 53 centimetres to 6.84 metres.

Paige Richards was Passtrak’s top athlete of this meet. She produced lifetime best performances in six out of eight events. She ran 11.79 seconds in the 80 metres and 51.36 seconds in the 300 metres. Then she went on a tear and increased her high jump by 15 centimetres to 1.20 metres, improved her discus by 78 centimetres out to 13.15 metres, dropped her 80-metre hurdle time to 15.46 seconds, cut eight seconds off her 800-metre time by finishing in 3:08.20, increased her long jump by 62 centimetres to 3.83 metres, and heaved the shot put 5.00 metres for an increase of 45 centimetres.

Cyclists set to roll into Pincher Creek and Crowsnest Pass

By Brad Quarin Warm spring days have encouraged local cycling enthusiasts to get out onto trails and roads in our area. But be prepared this Monday for an increase in the number of people and their bikes!

Cyclists en route from Montana’s Glacier National Park and heading to Jasper will make Pincher Creek their first stop in Alberta.

They will cover 900 kilometres over seven days for the Best in the West Cycle Tour, raising funds for the CASA Centre. The centre promotes mental health for children, adolescents and families in central and northern Alberta.

“We want the community to know that we’re coming and what it’s about,” says Sharon Lindstrom, CASA Foundation volunteer.

While the cyclists will set out from the United States, this isn’t an American project. “They’re all Albertans, and they’re all committed to mental health,” she says.

Cyclists will meet local residents at Ramada Hotel at 4:30 p.m. This event will allow the cycling tour group to thank Pincher Creek for hosting them, as they will stay overnight and patronize local restaurants.

The town, in support of the tour and its purpose, wants everyone to be aware of this public thank you.

“It sounds like a fantastic, fun event, and we’re proud they chose Pincher Creek,” says Marie Everts, events, marketing and economic development officer for the town.

Marie says the visit reflects the many facilities this town has to offer to travellers.

Locals can also make donations to the Best in the West Cycle Tour at the event, but the purpose is to say hello, Sharon says.

After leaving Pincher Creek on Tuesday, the cyclists will likely stop in Crowsnest Pass for lunch. They cover between 120 and 190 kilometres in a day.

While centred in Edmonton, the CASA Centre foundation advocates awareness for mental health throughout the province, says Sharon.

The foundation has run the cycle tour for 12 years and has made stops in Pincher Creek before. In the past two years combined, the tour has raised $25,000.

By Brad Quarin In May, a $400 donation was presented to Angels Within Us by local business GoingGreen-EnviroClean.

GoingGreen-EnviroClean offers door-to-door service, picking up items for recycling. From January 2015 to this March, customers included extra bags of recycling, intended for a donation.

Recyclables from the entire 2015 season at Heritage Acres Farm Museum also went into the donation.

“I want GoingGreen-EnviroClean to be recognized as a supporter of local charities and businesses alike,” says owner Becky Housenga.

“We believe small towns thrive from local support of businesses.”

Her customers and Pincher Creek residents suggested that this donation go to Angels Within Us, which assists community members in crisis.

Angels Within Us co-founder Sherry Mackenzie thought the donation was wonderful.

“I think it’s great on a number of levels,” she says. It promotes Becky’s business, and donors enjoy hearing their money stays local.

The cheque will go into the foundation’s general funds.

“We’re still always helping families in the area,” Sherry says.

Most recently, the group helped pay for groceries for a man undergoing surgery, and is assisting a woman who is caring for a young girl.
