“I’d always thought that when I had children, I would want to raise them in the mountains. I never expected, really, that I would be in the business.”

Doris was not only happy to be at Blackburn Jewellers, but happy to be reunited with her father.

“I feel very blessed that I had the four years with him before he passed away,” she says.

Naturally, there have been changes to the business over the years.

Doris found that watches were less popular as young people used cellphones more, resulting in a smaller selection at the store.

Although watches are still sold there, she says it was a tough choice.

China also used to be a lot more popular, and she recalls Blackburn Jewellers had “four shelves deep of china” when she was a girl.

Teacups and saucers were hot items, too.

“Life is change,” she says.

Why Blackburn Jewellers has endured relates to her efforts to continue her dad’s customer-service values, she says.

“I’m really blessed we have so many awesome customers,” she adds. “And I’ve been very, very lucky with the employees that I’ve been able to have.”

Although she doesn’t imagine her sons will take over, she doesn’t intend to leave Pincher Creek without a jewelry store.

She also sees a future for Main Street and the town in general, and is confident the community can work to develop the downtown area.

She has nothing but positive views on the future of Pincher Creek’s downtown.

Wildlife fencing project gets underway

WILDLIFE FENCING, continued from page 4 in the Pass.

The highway at Emerald Lake, which is attached to Crowsnest Lake, is a major crossing spot for bighorn sheep and some deer.

The fencing covers 1,440 metres and Alberta Transportation is covering the $280,000 cost.

As a member of the Highway 3 Partnership Group, Road Watch supports mitigation strategies for vehicle and wildlife collisions throughout the Crowsnest Pass.

Since 2004, Roadwatch has collected data, lobbied for mitigation and provided education on a number of strategies.

The partnership group also consists of Anatum Ecological Consulting Ltd., the Miistakis Institute, Western Transportation Institute, Volker Stevin, Alberta Environment and the Yellowstone to Yukon Conservation Initiative.

Members of these groups are thrilled as well.

“Highway 3 through the Crowsnest Pass is one of the most important links for wildlife in the Yellowstone to Yukon region,” says Stephen Legault, program director for the Y2Y Initiative.

“This fencing project is an exciting first step in ensuring bighorn sheep, grizzly bears and other iconic wildlife can move up and down the Rocky Mountains safely.”

Preventing collisions is important to the people of Crowsnest Pass as well. Road Watch members know that many locals have either been in a collision involving wildlife or know someone who has.

Road Watch and Collision Count are two local citizen science projects that record where wildlife vehicle collisions occur on Highway 3 and the number of animals killed.

Citizen science uses volunteers to collect data and has proven to be an effective and accurate form of science, Loretta says.

After the announcement in spring 2015, construction had to wait until the engineering was completed. Construction waited again for the summer season as wintertime construction is more expensive, says Road Watch co-ordinator Rob Schaufele.

Since then, Road Watch has learned that the government has combined the fencing project with work on a barrier at Crowsnest Lake to prevent rocks from falling onto Highway 3.

While this barrier has nothing to do with the collisions between wildlife and vehicles, combining the projects will reduce costs as well as the number of times traffic has to slow.

As construction goes on, Road Watch’s role is to spread awareness and answer questions about the fencing, Loretta says.

People have raised concerns about the project, such as what happens if the fencing actually traps an animal on the highway.

That’s where the jump-outs come into play. A jump-out is a ramp on the highway-side of the fence, allowing an animal to climb off the highway and over the fence, Rob says.

WILDLIFE FENCING, continued from page 5 2.4-metre-tall fence is too high to jump over — the animal can’t get back onto the highway.

The jump-outs have always been part of the plans, and have been used successfully in Banff, Canmore and throughout Canada and the United States.

Alberta Transportation is now committed to further mitigation work, Rob says.

The next priority is erecting fencing and an underpass for wildlife at Rock Creek, which is west of the west turnoff to Lundbreck Falls. This is a major crossing spot for many species, especially deer.

The public hasn’t been entirely convinced of the need for building an underpass at Rock Creek, because there is already a culvert there. However, the existing culvert is quite small, designed to enable the creek to flow under the highway, and most animals don’t use it, Loretta says.

Construction will put a larger culvert under the highway allowing all sizes of animals to cross through.

No decisions have been made about where to build the next crossing structure after Rock Creek, but the Highway 3 Partnership Group has identified 10 hotspots for wildlife crossing in the Pass.

Emerald Lake and Rock Creek are two, representing the first steps in the reduction of collisions between wildlife and vehicles.

John Barlow takes on 200 kilometres for Camp Horizon

By Brad Quarin You can well imagine a member of Canadian Parliament wearing a suit, taking his seat in Parliament and occasionally rising to vote.

This summer, MP John Barlow went beyond those expectations, embarking on a cycling tour of over 200 kilometres, covering Crowsnest Pass and Bar U Ranch — all for a worthy cause.

“I wanted to do something that would showcase the entire riding,” he says.

So, for a second year, he supported the Ride to Horizon, a cycling fundraiser for Camp Horizon.

by Easter Seals Alberta, is dedicated to children and adults with disabilities and medical issues. Nurses supply these campers with their medication, but Camp Horizon is more about outdoor adventures.

who raved about the swimming, field trips and zip line found at the camp.

Mr. Barlow has a nephew who spent time at the camp so he knows it’s a place where kids can be kids. He has also been there personally, as a journalist and most recently as the MP for Foothills.

“I was really overwhelmed by their enthusiasm and passion for the camp,” he says.

During his latest visit, he noticed that some buildings were becoming dilapidated, making it difficult to move wheelchairs around in them. He saw the potential in plans for new buildings, so he got involved in the Ride to Horizon.

This year’s ride took place on July 29 and 30, with most of the riders hailing from Okotoks and High River.

RIDE TO HORIZON,

My Little Corner

It’s been well over three years since my editorial was written in the middle of the night. Let’s just say that I blew my deadline this week and our printer was very gracious in ensuring you have a paper in your hands.

This is our biggest issue to date, and came together thanks to our dedicated team. Newspaper is a business with high demands, and those who choose to work in the industry tend to do so because they love the weekly reward of knowing they’ve done their best and have made a worthwhile contribution to their community.

Thank you to Brad, Brenda, Cary, Erin, Jaiden, Jessica and Lois for their willingness to stick it out with me on weeks like this where a big job requires more of each of us than anticipated.

They are all rock stars!

So are Gary and Blaise who put on many miles each week delivering the finished product.

I hope each one of them realizes how much I value their commitment.

Along with the usual variety of local stories, this week’s issue has a few special features.

The middle section of the paper is filled with back to class activities. We broadened the scope

to include organizations covering a wide range of interests. Fall is just around the corner and it’s time to think about taking on a personal challenge as the days get shorter and hot summer nights become a daydream for next year.

There are still some great warm-weather activities left and fun in the sun to be had. Don’t miss Corn Fest in Lundbreck this weekend. You’ll see more about this in the back section of the paper.

The Pincher Creek and District Historical Society is celebrating their golden anniversay and Blackburn Jewellers has an 80th birthday.

It takes vision and hard work to start a new venture. It takes dedication, a willingness to adapt to change and often a strong stomach to get through tough times and create something with growth and longevity.

Those who support businesses and organizations from behind the scenes don’t always receive the recognition they deserve. A bit of acknowledgment goes a long way when things are challenging.

If you pass on a word of thanks to those who are deserving — not only at Kootenai Brown, Blackburns or Shootin’ the Breeze, but to anyone doing a good job — you just might make someone’s day.

Riders paid a $100 registration fee, but also secured pledges in support of the camp. As well, Camp Horizon benefited from local businesses that stepped up to sponsor the ride. This year, he raised over $5,000.

Although Mr. Barlow isn’t experienced with long cycling tours, he has competed in sprint triathlons.

The ride wasn’t as hard as he expected.

“It was tough on your body, but you do the pace you’re able to do,” he says. At the end, he was left with a sense of accomplishment.

The scenery between Crowsnest Pass and Bar U Ranch was also worthwhile.

“That’s one of these things that’s so great about the ride,” he says. These were beautiful sunny days, and it was interesting to see the landscape vary from mountains on one side to canola fields on the other.

Anniversary events at Kootenai Brown Pioneer Village Submitted by Farley Wuth This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Pincher Creek and District Historical Society, which operates Kootenai Brown Pioneer Village.

Local history tells us that it was back on Sept. 2, 1966, that our historical society was formally incorporated. Over the past half century, we have had some incredible adventures in preserving, promoting and sharing our local history.

Prohibition Gala We also would like to share our next half century with our visitors, locals and the general public, starting with our Kootenai Brown Prohibition Gala and Harvest Festival, scheduled for the Friday and Saturday of the September long weekend.

These celebrations coincide with the actual date of this local milestone and it seems only fitting to honour these chronicles with fun-filled history events.

People are welcome to participate!

All activities will be held at Kootenai Brown Pioneer Village.

Events kick off with our Prohibition Gala slated for the evening of Friday, Sept. 2.

This fun-filled evening promises a mouth-watering homecooked dinner and entertainment based upon that historic Prohibition theme so well-remembered from Canadian history dating to the 1910s and 1920s.

The public is invited to dress in their favourite historic costumes and there will be prizes awarded for the best-dressed couple, woman and fellow. There also will be a door prize.

Ticket holders will have the opportunity to participate in Prohibition-era casino games.

Tickets for the evening events can be purchased at the museum for $35 per person or $70 per couple. The tickets are GST exempt.

Each ticket includes dinner, one complimentary drink and $10 of gambling money. Cocktails start at 6 p.m., with dinner scheduled for 7.

The entire family can step back in time Saturday’s Harvest Festival promises to be a fun-filled family day, one destined to be a public birthday party for our historical society.

It is fashioned to be a fun-filled old-fashioned carnival.

Activities will run all day — we are open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. There will be pioneer games and exciting bouncy tents for the children.

This is a great chance to tour through the Pioneer Village, reminisce about local history and stroll down memory lane.

An intriguing local historical scavenger hunt has been designed and will be available for public participation. A concession will be available as well as a well-decorated, tasty birthday cake.

Featured that day will be a vast showing of antique vehicles — these will bring back memories for our transportation history buffs!

Admission for Saturday’s events is 50 cents per person.

On exhibit both Friday and Saturday will be a unique travelling display organized by the Southern Alberta Pioneers Association.

This historical photo presentation visually chronicles rural settlements with strong agricultural heritage, such as Pincher Creek. This will be the only local showing of this work, so please drop by to see it.

Our friends from Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump will be here with a traditional teepee and an interpreter for the Saturday happenings.

Ken Phillips was treasurer for over a decade while his wife, June, a teacher, led school programs and tours.

Jean Tucker and Millie Cox were children of pioneers, so they were great for stories when giving tours, Farley recalls.

This is only the tip of the iceberg. Everyone involved over the years has made a contribution to KBPV and these contributions have made the work of these people possible, Colleen says.

While the people have changed, Colleen believes the demographics have remained similar. The volunteer board members continue to be around the same age.

“That seems to be who’s got the time to do all the volunteering,” she says.

“We have very similar challenges and very similar rewards to 50 years ago,” she adds. “The challenges will always be with finances, but that also makes it an exciting place to work,

The golden anniversary doesn’t indicate it’s time to pack up and go home.

“The first 50 years of the historical society, we did the pioneer experience,” she says. “We took it upon ourselves for the next 50 years to explore the after-1900 history of Pincher Creek.”

The society has already moved some buildings from 1905 Main Street to KBPV, but there’s more to be done, indicating that the historical society definitely has a future in this community.

We can’t imagine our community without Kootenai Brown Pioneer Village and all the workers and volunteers who make it run so smoothly.

We are truly blessed!

A Castle River crocodile While on staycation at the Cowley Lions Castle River Rodeo Campground, Arnold and Edna Nelson came upon a crocodile. Logs were used to build a retaining wall when the camping spot above them was built and, as time passed by, the upper log lost some bark. When the Nelsons occupied the spot last month, Edna imagined that the upper log looked like a crocodile. She and Arnold walked the river’s edge to find triangle-shaped rocks and placed them to look like teeth. The croc became a conversation piece for the rest of their vacation.

News from Huddlestun Senior Centre

By Joyce McFarland Every person I talked with during August had a busy schedule to fit in all the family gatherings, visitors, socials, meetings — just going strong every day. The weather obliged.

The Huddlestun Senior Centre was no exception. There was a board meeting on Aug 8. Secretary Kim Fukumoto noted that the parks and recreation board had voted to install some benches around town and we now have one near the entrance to our building.

We firmed up time and place at the Cottonwood park grounds for our picnic. Twelve people brought food enough for an army, so the firepit and the stories burned brightly all afternoon.

On Aug. 14, after the crib game, Nancy Tripp hosted a big bash for her husband, Wilbur, and Rhea Terre, both celebrating their 85th birthday that day. Heritage Acres fall fair coming soon

of the two sharp-looking seniors. Nancy was a charming hostess for all the visitors and, as she and Wilbur have been longtime members, it was a happy event for the drop-in centre as well.

On Aug. 20 the centre was opened by Kim, Doreen Michalsky and Al Anderson to welcome the residents of Vista Village to have a first-class view of the parade in comfort. Everything worked fine. It was a lovely day and some of the visitors opted to sit outside in the sun, but they moved inside after the parade for lunch, served by their caregivers, before heading back home after the mob was gone off Main Street.

The last of the summer wine bottle is almost finished and all the September songs are tugging at my heart, remembering how good it was to have been a farm wife and know the abundance and pleasure of harvest time since the 1960s.

Plan an afternoon to visit Farley Wuth at the museum and see how our pioneers struggled to succeed and laid the groundwork for all the inventions and new ideas that we take for granted today.

The next board meeting is on Tuesday, Sept. 6, and the general meeting is on Friday, Sept. 23. All the details and programs are in the calendar now available at the centre.

This is a country fair with an old-fashioned flair and entertainment for the whole family.

Come and spend the day!

Gates open at 8 a.m. and the fair runs from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. Regular gate admission applies: $10 per adult (17 and older); free for 16 and under.

Kick off the fair at the toonie pancake breakfast from 8:30 until 10 a.m.

After breakfast, wander around the farm museum to see the displays and demonstrations, and participate in the interactive events.

We have made some exciting changes this year.

The bench show has expanded to include junior classes for ages 16 and under, and classes in woodworking and leather work.

The cost to enter the bench show is one adult admission for adults and includes all classes they wish to enter, and is free for juniors.

For exhibitors who are not early birds, we will collect non-perishable bench show exhibits and items for Busy Hands Through the Ages at the Pincher Creek Co-op mall from 1 until 5 p.m. on Sept. 2 and Sept. 16. We will exchange an armband for the museum entry fee.

If you have perishable items (food), or did not previously submit them, rush your exhibits to the Doukhobor barn, where entries are accepted from 8 until 10 a.m.

The bench show opens to the public at noon, once judging is complete.

By Brad Quarin On Sept. 8, the Crowsnest Pass preschool Kids Kollege will be starting their school year on the right foot, after some thoughtful gestures by the Coleman Lions and Crowsnest Medical Clinic.

The Lions recently donated $500 to the preschool for printing supplies and general programming, while the clinic made an in-kind donation of a colour printer.

“We’re able to get some support from the community, which is integral to continuing operations,” says treasurer Jenice Smith.

The preschool’s printer broke down at the end of the last school year, and the non-profit society needed a replacement, she says.

A teacher kindly did the school’s printing at her home during the inconvenience.

When Jenice mentioned the need for a printer to Crowsnest Medical Clinic manager Bridget Graf, Bridget remembered that the clinic had an unused printer, which they donated.

Brian Duff, who presented the cheque on behalf of the Coleman Lions, says all members present at meetings vote on beneficiaries of

donations.

“The Lions is a big supporter of all children-based activities in the community,” he says. “This one’s something that we’re obviously proud to donate to.”

Kids Kollege, based in Bellevue’s M.D. McEachern Community Centre, is a licensed preschool under Alberta Education and has about 30 children enrolled.

The school is also supported by parents and Family and Community Support Services.

Turning Pointe kicks off 15th year Submitted by Turning Pointe Dance Studio Turning Pointe Dance Studio is proudly kicking off its 15th year and inviting everyone to share in the celebration.

A customer open house will be held at Turning Pointe’s Hillcrest studio, 22705 8th Ave. (across from the post office), on Sept. 7 from 6 to 9 p.m.

Owner Tara Groves says registration for the upcoming fall season will be ongoing throughout the evening.

Turning Pointe will also be hosting two separate registration sessions in addition to the open house.

On Aug. 31, the Hillcrest studio will be open from 3 to 8 p.m. to take registrations, and on Sept. 8, Pincher Creek students can register in person at Lebel Mansion from 4 to 7 p.m.

“We’ve really enjoyed building our business and the dance community in the Crowsnest Pass and Pincher Creek,” Tara says, “and we’re excited to continue to do that.”

Turning Pointe is promoting several new beginner programs, and Tara stresses that there’s something for everyone.

“I want to build more of a rec program,” she says, “that appeals to participants who want to just come and dance without having the commitment of a year-end show.”

In addition to classes for boys and girls, the studio offers classes for adults, including a popular barre class that builds core strength and balance.

“We’re going to be adding ballet and jazz for adults as well,” says Tara.

It’s time for students to hit the books

By Brad Quarin Summer holidays are drawing to a close, and most children around the area will be back in school on Thursday.

There’s a lot to love about summer, but there’s plenty to look forward to with new developments at the schools.

“We’re really excited for the year, lots of cool stuff happening,” says Chad Jensen, principal of Livingstone School in Lundbeck.

In Crowsnest Pass, staff at Horace Allen School are looking forward to getting back to work. School supplies will be provided to the students, included in the cost of registration fees.

Savi Houldin is joining the staff as learning support for the year, says assistant principal Myrna Dembicki.

The school is also focusing on supporting positive behaviors, using the character Kelso the Frog, from an American

program to teach children how to solve problems.

Mr. Malone is joining the staff at Isabelle Sellon School, as the new Grade 4 and 5 teacher, and many of the students will also be new.

“We’re welcoming a whole new flock of students into Grade 4,” says principal Paul Pichurski.

Thursday will start with an assembly on the playground, and there will be a barbecue between 5 and 6 p.m.

ISS will continue to offer option block programming, in which students can pursue interests in things like geocaching, robotics, art, French and woodworking. Math remains a key academic focus.

A big change at Crowsnest Consolidated High School is the addition of the cosmetology program, with Ms. Lewicki teaching hairdressing, makeup and nails.

“We’re more concerned about grabbing the kids, and not letting them get out there into harm’s way,” she says.

Last year, two drivers were identified.

One was charged and the other warned.

Then, Mel visited First Student and offered to ride shotgun on buses, something he did before, about 10 years ago.

Back then, the bus driver told him that having an RCMP auxiliary constable on board made the children unusually quiet.

“In those days, we were in uniform,” Mel notes.

During his recent visit to First Student, he also brought a picture of eagles to symbolize his “eagle eyes.”

“I have mounted eagles in my house.

They’re my thing,” he says.

ucts to design a creative poster using Mel’s picture.

Mel will switch randomly between buses, riding different routes on different days, she says. “Nobody’s going to know when, or where.”

Each ride will take about an hour and a half of his time. He will bring a notepad and binoculars, and may also get photos of licence plates.

Anyone caught passing a bus while the red lights are flashing will receive a notice in the mail of a $543 fine and six demerits, Mel and Sharon say.

Six demerits is halfway to getting your licence suspended. Mel can testify in court if a driver denies the accuracy of the report.

Besides letting people know that Mel is watching, the new campaign in September may also include another visit to Tim Hortons.

In April, First Student stopped customers at the drive-thru to hand out Reds Flashing — No Passing coffee sleeves and chat with drivers.

It was a great success, as First Student saw nearly 300 cars in the morning and 125 in the afternoon, Sharon says. The vast majority of drivers were willing to chat.

This time, staff will be handing out slips with Pincher Office Product’s eagle design.

And more will be handed out during the trade show on Sept. 9 and 10.

The possibility of fines and demerits with the new eagle eyes program should be an incentive to watch for flashing red lights, but it should be a secondary incentive.

The primary incentive for caution should be the protection of our children.

Get fit this fall at Karasu Studio Submitted by Karasu Studio Fall is in the air and with the dawn of a new season, Karasu Studio, located on main street in Bellevue, will be offering a host of classes designed to energize the mind and body.

Since opening its doors last spring, the wellness studio has been busy providing instruction in karate, meditation and yoga.

Starting in September, Karasu will be offering an early-morning competition class that’s ideal for those wanting to kick-start their day with a high-powered workout.

“It’s designed to kick your butt,” owner Jen Lukawitski says with a laugh, adding that the program is an international quality training program derived from the national karate team.

“It’s meant to be a well-rounded training program,” Jen says of the new class, which will take place on Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings at 6:15.

Athletes who partake in martial arts or obstacle-course racing, or who simply enjoy a challenging workout, will benefit from the class.

The studio will also be offering its popular “lightsaber” course — a form of martial arts called kobojutsu. Whereas karate consists of empty-hand technique, kobujutsu involves weaponry technique.

“It’s a lot of fun,” Jen says, “but it’s also great for people dealing with injury because it has a nice, tempered pace and helps to build strength and flexibility.”

As with all of her martial arts instruction, the class also has an emphasis on discipline and respect.

Registration can also be done online or in person at the studio, and monthly payment options are available.

The studio will continue to offer a free karate class to air cadets on Wednesday evenings, as well as classes for both children and adults of all levels.

CCHS also has a new assistant principal, Ms. Fidelak.

Mr. Baxter himself is fairly new as principal, but since he has been at CCHS for a long time, he’s finding it’s not too different.

The school will be welcoming several international students this year, some for a portion of the year.

There will be three from Germany, 16 from Colombia and 12 from Finland. This represents an exciting expansion of the school’s international program, Mr. Baxter says.

Livingstone School is preparing to launch the ski academy this year, and is welcoming several new staff members.

Chad says the school is undergoing a high school redesign, consisting of a tutorial block with time for teachers to mentor students in personal and academic matters.

A literacy intervention program has also been designed to support students from kindergarten to Grade 6 with literacy skills.

In Pincher Creek, St. Michael’s School students will enjoy their newly-renovated gym, which has a refinished floor and new painting, says clerk Tracey Young.

The gym now features the school’s dragon logo.

Other major renovations are continuing on schedule, with students in grades 9 to 12 continuing to meet at Vertical Church during the modernization project.

Everyone is excited to go back, Tracey says.

Canyon School will get started with a flag-raising ceremony at 11 a.m. on Thursday, says principal Dave Fender.

There is a new assistant principal, Mrs. Ames, and new teachers, Ms. Doell and Ms. Kennedy. Ms. Lach is joining the staff as a learning support teacher and First Nations liaison.

At Matthew Halton High School there are three new staff members: band teacher Stephanie Gordon, welding teacher Dallas Hawke and junior high school teacher Robbie Van Orman.

MHHS is continuing the Pathway to Success program, says principal Tara Tanner. The 40-minute block on

certain days allows for student-directed learning, in which students can choose a teacher to work with on enrichment projects.

Enrichment means taking a subject the student is interested in and doing extra work to improve upon skills.

The library at MHHS is also being converted into a learning commons, with a new video-editing suite and circulation desk.

In Brocket, Napi’s Playground Elementary School and Piikani Nation Secondary School have a number of new staff, says principal Crystal Good Rider.

The schools are also opening the Iitaomoipiotsyo’p Centre, which resembles a Parent Link Centre. Parents with children aged four and under can attend for play and parenting programs.

Napi’s Playground Elementary School is also getting its own office, Ms. Good Rider says.

The school is partnering with the Martin Aboriginal Education Initiative to help teach students literacy skills.

New people and new features should all make for an exciting year.

Free Mental Health First Aid course teaches priceless skills

By Erin Fairhurst The organizers of Darcy’s Nature Walk for Mental Wellness, in conjunction with the Crowsnest Pass Health Foundation, will be hosting a free mental health first-aid course in Crowsnest Pass on Sept. 17 and 18.

The course consists of 12 hours of instruction. Lunch is provided and participants will be treated to the tutelage of a qualified instructor in a positive environment.

“It’s a place for people to connect and share experiences,” says Randi Lynn Rinaldi, one of the founders and organizers of Darcy’s Nature Walk.

“Our goal is to get people educated about mental health, so if someone is in need they can be helped in the right way.”

The course will cover a range of mental disorders — from alcoholism to anxiety to depression — and will provide instruction on signs, symptoms and ways in which to intervene and help someone in need.

This will be the fourth time the course has been hosted in Crowsnest Pass, and Randi Lynn encourages interested participants to sign up sooner rather than later.

“We have about 10 spots left,” she says, adding that a future session will be organized if there is enough interest.

Shelley Terpstra of Pincher Creek is a past participant in the free class, having taken it last fall, and says she found the course very beneficial.

“It was eye-opening,” she recalls. “If you deal with stress at all in any way, you’ll learn something from this class.”

In addition to learning a lot about mental illness, Shelley says that she benefited from the camaraderie in the classroom setting.

“I learned I wasn’t alone in dealing with things,” she says.

Not only does the course provide a much-needed skill set, but it takes aim at breaking down the stigmas associated with mental illness.

“It gets people talking,” says Shelley. “When something tragic happens, mental illness is at the forefront, but it needs to be talked about on a larger scale.”

NOTICE OF PUBLIC OPEN HOUSE Crowsnest–Pincher Creek Landfill Plan to Add a Biomass Incinerator This open house to communicate our plans to amend Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act (EPEA) Approval No. 18701-01-00 by installing and operating a biomass incinerator at the CrowsnestPincher Creek (CNPC) Landfill.

Representatives from the Crowsnest-Pincher Creek Landfill, technology providers and environmental consultants will be in attendance to discuss the proposed project and respond to questions.

OVERVIEW OF PROPOSAL The mission of the CNPC landfill is to provide a cost effective, sustainable, and environmentally compliant waste management facility promoting clean, green, healthy communities. The CNPC landfill is located approximately 3km southwest of the Village of Cowley.

In recent years, the CNPC landfill has experienced a rise in volumes of biomass arriving at the landfill, particularly dead livestock and wildlife from the regional area, and fresh or processed animals or animal by-products seized at Alberta and British Columbia border crossings. In order to manage this waste stream in accordance with it’s mission, CNPC landfill management has reviewed options of composting, incineration and alternative landfill disposal methods, and determined that incineration is the most effective and responsible solution.

The proposed technology is a commercially proven advanced twostage combustion process to safely dispose of the waste. This technology is in operation in other parts of Canada, and meets provincial emission and environmental requirements.

Corn and family fun galore on the menu in Lundbreck this long weekend

By Brad Quarin Residents of Lundbreck and neighbouring communities love corn, and will be sharing the cream of the crop at their annual Corn Fest event on Saturday.

Corn Fest is about more than food, though. It offers family fun in a celebration of the whole community.

“There’s lots of kids in Lundbreck. It’s nice to have something for them to do,” says Kimberly Hurst, a co-ordinator of the Lundbreck Citizens Council event.

This year, Corn Fest is on the move. The day of the festival has been switched from August to the September long weekend, and many of the activities have been moved from Patton Park to behind Lundbreck Community Hall.

The purpose of both adjustments is to encourage participation.

By having the event in September, residents won’t have to choose between it and the Huckleberry Festival, or between Lundbreck’s Corn Fest and Taber’s cornfest.

Many locals have family in Taber, and like to go to their cornfest, Kimberly says.

As well, if some people aren’t aware of the family activities after the parade, having them behind the hall might make them more visible.

The day will begin with a pancake breakfast at the hall between 8 and 10 a.m.

The breakfast is made possible by the Municipal District of Pincher Creek, with MD councillors and staff making and serving the food, she says.

The parade follows at 11 a.m. Once held only occasionally, the parade has been an annual feature of the festival since 2013.

“It would be a nice thing for a cute little community to have more often,” Kimberly says.

The only challenge in having the parade four years in a row has been finding the volunteers to support it.

Nevertheless, everyone loves it, especially the children. “Any kid loves to be in a parade.” O’bies is once again offering a free frozen drink to children who decorate their bikes for the parade.

After the parade, vendors will be out until 4 p.m., and there will be a bouncy castle, a softball tournament and the Crowsnest-Pincher Creek Landfill’s food truck. Human foosball was a hit at Bellecrest Days and Canada Day in Crowsnest Pass and will again appear at Corn Fest. The corn is free.

Changing the way we see nature Georges Brossard’s lifelong passion for insects would eventually lead to a whole new kind of educational institution.

Born in 1940, Brossard attended a rural elementary school where he was encouraged to take GEORGES BROSSARD up insect collecting as a ENTOMOLOGIST, EDUCATOR hobby.

AND INNOVATOR Fascinated by the Montreal Insectarium complexity of these tiny © Space for Life, Michel Tremblay creatures, Brossard was devastated when he returned from vacation one summer to find his collection destroyed. At that moment, he decided that he would start over, this time with an ambitious goal: to collect every kind of insect on earth.

Even as a law student at the University of Ottawa, Brossard had bugs on his mind — to the point where he planned on writing his PhD on bees, an idea that he ultimately abandoned to become a notary. At age 25, he opened his own practice and worked day and night, six days a week, for the next 13 years, quietly amassing the funds that would allow him to someday pursue his childhood dream.

On New Year’s Day 1978, Georges Brossard retired from his lucrative career as a notary. His wife, Suzanne, also left her job, and the very next they were on a plane toward the first leg of an eight-month journey around the world.

This trip would be the first of many, and more than a decade of globetrotting later, Brossard had amassed an impressive 250,000 insect specimens from over 100 countries.

Brossard believed that the traditional representation of insects in museums was poorly designed and made the topic boring, but that these misunderstood beings could teach people a lot about the environment and biodiversity.

Once he had built a satisfactory collection, he began showing his insects all over Quebec. Each time, more and more people flocked to see his curious creatures, and crowds were inspired by Brossard’s unrelenting enthusiasm.

The success of his travelling exhibits convinced Brossard that he could change the public’s perspective toward “bugs.” To do so, he donated his entire collection to the City of Montreal and received the green light from Mayor Jean Doré to start funding a museum. Public support poured in, allowing Georges Brossard to open the world’s first insectarium in 1989. The Insectarium de Montréal now welcomes over 400,000 visitors a year.

In addition to his museum work, Brossard engages in philanthropy and has an active media career. The 2004 film Le Papillon Bleu is based on a trip he took with a terminally ill child to capture a rare butterfly. He’s also hosted and directed the TV programs Mémoires d’insectes and Insectia.

Today, Georges Brossard still strives to help our environment by teaching people about the fascinating world of insects. And his mission is succeeding: there are now over 25 insectariums worldwide, including five founded by Brossard himself.

With the coming of the new school year, it seems only appropriate to reflect back upon those old-time country schools that once dotted Pincher Creek’s rural landscape. During the pioneer era of close to a century ago, there were no less than 39 such country schools in what is now Pincher Creek’s trading area, roughly corresponding to our municipal district.

These classic one-room schools extended as far south as the Parkview District north of Waterton Lakes, Fishburn and Springridge to the east, Olin and Heath Creeks to the north and adjacent to the Porcupine Hills, and Burmis, Beaver Mines and Coalfields to the west.

Most of these iconic schools taught grades 1 through 8, although a few encompassed Grade 9 as well. Provided there were enough children of school age, these halls of learning generally were about five or six miles apart, which meant that pioneer youngsters had only a couple of miles or so, at most, to travel to and from school each day.

If the children were fortunate, they could ride horseback. Often two or three siblings could be seen riding together. Horses were stabled in a log barn adjacent to the school itself.

or he taught all the classes at the same time.

Usually the teacher would board at a nearby farm or ranch, but in some cases they resided in a teacherage, a small one- or two-room dwelling adjacent to the school. Teachers found the conditions isolated and the hours long, but the rewards were seeing the pioneer children learn the three Rs — reading, writing and ’rithmetic.

At times there were three or four students in each grade level, providing each school with an enrolment of 25 or 30 youngsters.

Country schools were not only educational facilities but were also used for community meetings, social events and Christmas gatherings. The latter pageants, musicals and recitals put on by the students under the careful tutelage of the teacher.

Today, more than half a century after the final country school closed its doors (this was the second Fishburn School, which closed in 1963), several such as Fishburn and Coalfields continue to be used as rural community halls.

Their visibility reminds us of a bygone era of traditional rural education. Others, such as the original 1894 Fishburn School and the 1909 Cyr School, are preserved at Kootenai Brown Pioneer Village.

Olive Isabel (Anderson) Bonertz On Aug. 20, 2016, Olive Bonertz passed away peacefully at Foyer Lacombe Hospice in St. Albert, Alta., at the age of 93.

Olive was a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, neighbour and friend. She was resourceful, creative, a good listener and a gifted seamstress as well as a dedicated watercolour painter.

She is survived by her sons: Allan (Marg), Melvin, and Raymond (Wendy); six grandchildren: Jennifer (Doug) Keeling, Cameron (Kim) Bonertz, Lisa (Greg) McMorrow, Anita (Scott) Curran, Nathen Bonertz, and Jason (Jalena) Bonertz; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Olive was predeceased by her husband, Wilmer Bonertz; her parents, James and Bessie Anderson; her infant sister, Irene Anderson; her daughter, Lynne Schaub, and son-in-law Denis Schaub.

Memorial contributions for the late Olive Bonertz may be made to Alberta Cancer Foundation, 300, 1620 29th St. N.W., Calgary, AB, T2N 4L7; or to CNIB, 410 Stafford Dr. S., Lethbridge, AB, T1J 2L2.

A memorial service for the late Olive Bonertz was held on Aug. 25, 2016, at Pincher Creek United Church, with Rev. Pauline Bell officiating, followed by the interment at the Fairview Cemetery.
