When Ray joined, that building was a cinderblock garage housing everything that didn’t fit anywhere else at the museum, says historical society president Colleen Casey-Cyr. It has been transformed into Gasoline Alley, showcasing the antique cars.

“That was the best thing that ever happened, and Ray really made it happen,” she says.

Many people work with him on these projects, and they share a positive attitude about their efforts.

Much of his own work has involved restoring and maintaining classic cars. He also does carpentry, painting and welding and cuts grass around the museum.

Colleen notes that Ray is helpful when people want to donate something to the museum. He lives nearby, so people often approach him.

He’s even donating a library of classic mechanics books and Popular Mechanics magazines.

The historical society appreciates his efforts. “He’s here all the time, he’s helping out with a variety of different projects, with lots of enthusiasm, lots of local history knowledge,” says curator Farley Wuth.

Ray also helps with tours, Farley says. “He’s made a great contribution to the historical society over the last many, many years.”

The society knew of the bench project, and approved of having it at KBPV. “It was a good secret,” Colleen says.

To Ray, the unveiling of the bench was a particular surprise, given that he had seen it at Boulder Metal Industries several times prior to the gala.

“I never, ever dreamt it would be made as a gift to me,” he says. “I’m really enthused by the darn thing.”

“It’s really a unique, beautiful bench,” Colleen says.

It will provide an ideal place for visitors to sit and gain a new perspective on the antique vehicles, the barn and the village.

Make a difference with Mentoring Moms

By Erin Fairhurst The start of the school year can be a particularly hectic time for families but, let’s face it, there’s no easy time to be a parent.

That’s why Crowsnest Pass Parent Link Centre has programs in place to offer support to families of all types — and to all types of family members.

Mentoring Moms is a mom-centric program designed to match volunteer mentors with a mom who is in need of relief, support or just a friendly face to talk to.

“It’s about finding healthy support,” says the program facilitator, Jenny Wilmot. “It’s a way to help moms build up their tool boxes and to become the best person they can be.”

Volunteer mentors are typically other moms, but can also be women who have experience with children and are willing to give their time to a fellow woman in need of support and friendship.

“A lot of moms tend to self-isolate,” says Jenny. “They feel overwhelmed or guilty and this program is here to remind them that they aren’t alone.”

Mentoring Moms meets once a month for a group activity such as a cooking class or a picnic. Most recently they were treated to a relaxing yoga session at Spry, a fitness and yoga studio.

Free child care is provided during group activities and Jenny says it’s a great way for the women to enjoy some me time while their little ones

“Sometimes she needs help getting the house organized, or might need a study buddy for an exam,” explains Jenny. “Or maybe she just needs to talk to someone else who’s been there too.”

The program is free and is open to anyone who is interested in friendship, support or simply trying something new.

Mentors are needed on an ongoing basis, so if you’re an experienced mom or mentor who has some extra time and love to give, please consider volunteering.

Local runner moves up in national track and field standings

By Brad Quarin Mathias Gelber says he’s never been pushed harder than when representing Passtrak at the 2016 Canadian national track and field championships.

He ran the 1,200- and 2,000-metre races in the midget category at the Montreal event held last month.

“Having the people in front of you setting the paces, and having young pros racing before you, and you can watch how they do stuff, you basically see the next generation of fast runners coming up. It pushes you,” says the Pincher Creek athlete.

The day before the competition, Mathias visited the course with coach Ritch Braun, to familiarize himself with the environment. This made race day less of a shock, and he didn’t feel nervous.

The competition itself was challenging. “It was definitely some of the best athletes in Canada,” he says.

There were 34 runners competing in the 1,200-metre event, and 28 in the 2,000-metre race. Only a few were from Alberta.

Mathias is used to Alberta competitions where one particular athlete is usually ahead of him. However, his regular competitor wasn’t present in Montreal.

Mathias hoped to crack the top five or top 10, but this time there were many strong Mathias Gelber at the 2016 Canadian national track and field championships in Montreal.

“This was definitely an eye-opening experience,” he says.

He beat his personal best by 3½ seconds in the 1,200-metre event, placing 17th with a time of three minutes 26 seconds.

He entered this race ranked in 30th position in his national age category. As well as improving his ranking, the time set a new Passtrak record for his age and improved his Canadian ranking to 10th overall.

He wanted to improve upon this performance by finishing the 2,000-metre track in five minutes 50 seconds. That’s 70 seconds per lap.

A longer race may seem more difficult, but one of Mathias’s strengths is keeping up a pace over a long distance. His experience in triathlon, an endurance event, helps with that.

He finished 10th, at six minutes two seconds.

This nine-second improvement on his time gave Mathias another Passtrak record and bumped him to second place for 14-year-olds nationally.

Mathias admits he had mixed feelings leaving the nationals. “I wanted to be the best in Canada, but I liked beating my personal best by almost nine seconds,” he says.

“Even though I didn’t get a podium finish, I was really happy with my time.”

Mathias had been to Montreal once before, but this time he tasted what it was like to live in the city, while staying with friends. It gave him the opportunity to exercise his French immersion education and hear different perspectives on world events.

In early September, Mathias went to the national youth championships in triathlon in Edmonton.

This was another awesome experience, as he placed second in the individual event in the 13to 15-year-old age group.

On the first day of the championships, he was in a mixed relay of boys and girls. They placed fifth, which was impressive given that they were all 14 and 15 and the other teams were older.

The dinner in Edmonton was also memorable, as Mathias met many that he considers the best triathletes in the world, and had his photo taken with some of them.

From here, Mathias plans to focus on track more than triathlon, hopefully returning to the Canadian national track and field championships at the top of his age category next year.

Afterwards, he can place more emphasis on triathlon again, and hopes to do well.

The Crowsnest Pass Food Bank serves over 100 people each month.

“Our usage has increased over 20 per cent in the last year,” he says. “We’re probably seeing four or five new clients per month.”

Bruce got involved shortly after moving to Crowsnest Pass eight years ago, after attending an open house recruiting food bank volunteers.

“I thought it was something I wanted to do to get involved in the community,” he says.

The food bank moved to main street Blairmore, where it stayed for two years.

Three years ago, a citizen purchased the land across from the Blairmore ranger station and donated it to the food bank.

With a Teck Coal contribution of $100,000 and its own contribution from fundraising, the food bank was able to build its current home.

The building may seem a little small, as the sewer line behind the structure confines them to a certain space, but it suits their needs.

Bruce volunteers on Monday and Wednesday evenings, helping fill hampers.

When volunteers hand out the hampers to clients, they sometimes get to chat.

Occasionally, clients share their troubles, and Bruce finds it easy to talk with them and to try to give them some comfort. He knows that the meals provided in the hamper will relieve some of their anxiety.

Chats with clients have also provided valuable information. Volunteers like himself learned that standard hampers given out were not always appropriate. For example, the milk that was given with every hamper wasn’t of much use to lactose-intolerant clients.

To prevent waste, all hamper items are now optional.

Bruce is expecting things to get busy, with children going back to school and parents having to buy school supplies and clothes, so the need is ever-present.

Personal and corporate donations make up most of the food bank’s budget.

Bruce encourages donations. “There’s an ongoing need, and there seems to be an increased use of the food bank,” he says. “Every little bit helps.”

Potluck dinner celebrates multiculturalism

By Deb Crowshoe The MultiCultural Friendship group of Pincher Creek was formed a year ago to share and honour the differing cultures, traditions and perspectives within our community.

This non-profit group is open to the public and promotes friendship, helping each other and contributing to the community.

MCF meetings usually include a potluck dinner highlighting a variety of ethnic dishes and family favourites. Presentations and discussion follow.

To date, shared perspectives have included those around Korean “Thanksgiving,” a Blackfoot member’s experience, life in Zimbabwe, and an appreciation of rural culture.

Last November, members shared their Christmas stories from a variety of family

traditions.

Another evening, a member shared his collection of wildflower pictures from the Waterton landscape.

A fundraising evening in June, sponsored

by MCF, featured an Other Special Places slide show by Gord Petersen and Cathy Scrimshaw.

The proceeds went to support Boun Lod, a young girl from Laos who has required ongoing restorative surgeries.

On Saturday, Sept. 24, from 5 to 8 p.m. at St. John’s Anglican Church, MCF will be hosting a potluck dinner followed by a presentation about another facet of our rich local cultural mosaic.

Plan to attend and enjoy the company and the food while you learn more about the Buffalo Runners Society.

Ken Williams, with assistance from Piikani elders, has been instrumental in the re-establishment of this historic society of the Blackfoot and Lakota nations. He will share his insights with us that evening.

Ken notes that Nick Smith — the founding father of the current Buffalo Runners Society — described four tenets for the society: improve health and wellbeing through exercise; get back in touch with nature; promote the legacy of the original Buffalo Runners Society; and improve cross-cultural relations.

Public figures serve time for Breakfast Club

By Brad Quarin Pincher Creek can be proud that its elected officials end up in jail so often.

Councillors Jim Litkowski and Wayne Elliott were again found behind bars at Walmart last week — for Jail and Bail. They were collecting donations for a good cause.

This time, the councillors joined Walmart’s campaign in support of the Breakfast Club of Canada, raising money that all goes to Pincher Creek schools.

Gayle MacIntyre began co-ordinating Walmart’s fundraisers for the Breakfast Club in mid August. The goal of the club is to bring breakfasts to hungry students.

“These guys are awesome. They help out every time we do it, and it makes a big difference,” Gayle says.

The councillors say that all that jail time doesn’t get tedious, and that a couple of hours is actually a fairly light sentence. Gayle notes it’s a friendlier prison than many.

Sgt. Mark Harrison, teacher Savi Houldin and Walmart staff also served time last week.

The Jail and Bail brought in $1,591. Combined with previous dunk tanks, lunches, bake sales and bookmark sales, the local Walmart raised $8,037.

Senior racing at Whispering Winds

By Brad Quarin For a second year, Whispering Winds Village held scooter races at the end of August.

The races are designed to give seniors a fun activity. For residents who did not have a scooter but wanted to participate, Leister’s Equipment provided extra scooters.

The complex parking lot was transformed into a course for the races with chalk lines and participants were timed as they navigated the course.

Five years in ...

It’s a rare occasion when the entire Shootin’ the Breeze team is in one place at the same time. Last week we spent a few windy moments together posing for the a fifth-anniversary photo. My Little Corner It seems like time has flown by as we wrap up our fifth year at Shootin’ the Breeze and move forward into the sixth. At the same time, it feels like we’ve been at it for a long while.

In late August 2011, I wrote the first version of My Little Corner.

It started like this: “I’ve been called an opinionated person a time or two in my life and certainly have my own interpretation of things. Even so, I have chosen to reserve only a little corner of the paper for those thoughts of the publisher/editor.

“The focus of our printed content is on good news, fascinating people and interesting events. I feel there will be no shortage of these items to fill our pages.

“Negativity and sensationalism seem to be everywhere we turn. Our publication has made a conscious choice to focus on positive news, humour and inspirational stories.”

This was printed in a sample version of the paper that was distributed to show what I intended Shootin’ the Breeze to be.

The paper’s original name was Mountainside News, with Shootin’ the Breeze as the tagline.

As the first copies rolled from the press, the words of my dad nagged at me. He had warned

that if I used the word “news” I would be expected to provide up-to-the-minute “hard news.”

This wasn’t in line with my vision.

Halfway through printing 2,000 copies, I stopped the press, changed the name and got things rolling again.

While we certainly include more newsy articles now, the original concept is one that is supported by all who work here.

Two weeks after the sample issue was made, the debut issue of Shootin’ the Breeze hit the streets on Sept. 14 — five years ago, today!

In that short time, I quickly realized I had bitten off more than I could chew — what I had envisioned as a project for one was much more than that. My brother, Cary, came to the rescue and moved to Pincher Creek to help me out.

Five years later, I’m grateful he is still here.

The space for this week’s Corner isn’t big enough to say all I would like to say about the wonderful people who have joined us since then — Brenda Shenton, Brad Quarin, Jessica Jensen, Jaiden Panchyshyn, Erin Fairhurst, Gary Andrews and Blaise O’Rourke — are the names and the faces behind our weekly publication.

Each of them brings unique viewpoints, experiences and talents to the table and I am most

By Brad Quarin After 20 years, the Pincher Planters are putting away their gardening tools. The volunteer group, known for growing and maintaining flower beds, flower baskets and more around Pincher Creek, will not be continuing their public gardening work next year.

This decision was announced at a town council meeting last week.

Efforts of the Pincher Planters have been appreciated, and the contributions of the group’s members over the past two decades are worth celebrating.

“Over the years, we’ve had a group of volunteers that really care about how the town looks,” says Noreen Robbins, secretary-treasurer.

The group was honoured with recognition from Communities in Bloom and with the Spirit of Pincher Creek Award in 2012.

A more important reward may have been the emotional and spiritual benefit of their work to themselves and to those viewing the flowers.

“It looks like someone cares, and I think that’s important,” Noreen says.

She recalls a woman who moved to town from Indonesia and who feared that nothing would grow in this different climate. The Pincher Planters displays gave her hope.

“If people enjoy the flower beds and it makes their day a little better, that’s a good thing,” Noreen says.

“You don’t know what kind of positive effect that has.”

The group planted its roots following the 1995 flood, which Noreen says was so bad that a half-ton truck floated through Kootenai Brown

Pioneer Village.

In the aftermath, Diane Burt Stuckey, acting for the town, placed an ad in the newspaper looking for volunteers for a beautification group.

About 20 women attended the first meeting, and seven opted to form the Pincher Planters.

The town turned the sod at Cenotaph Park and added topsoil, allowing the fledgling group to begin digging and planting.

When the group was formed, Cenotaph Park had two planter boxes, and dying evergreen trees.

In their first year, the Pincher Planters kept one flower bed, by the pinchers sculpture on Main Street.

Over the next few years, they started new beds or assumed responsibility for beds that other groups could no longer maintain.

The Pincher Planters were also originally responsible for flower beds at KBPV. When Larry’s Greenhouse closed, owners Larry and Sheila Dyer told the group they could have the plants left over in the greenhouse, Noreen says.

That was no small gesture, amounting to seven half-ton truckloads full of plants. This meant the one flower bed planned at KBPV became five.

Pincher Planters member Pauline Warren later left the group to focus solely on KBPV beds, which alone require considerable work to maintain.

In the group’s second year, Noreen read an article in Canadian Gardening about Communities in Bloom. The organization holds competitions evaluating communities in terms of tidiness, floral displays, environmental action and heritage conservation.

When Noreen brought the article to the group, some thought they weren’t ready to compete while others thought it would be a learning experience.

Pincher Creek has since won at the national level in 2009 and the class of champions (small) category in the national competition last year. This year the community advanced to the international challenge, with results to come later this fall.

One judge, commenting to Noreen about the beds, said she’s never seen another group in Canada volunteer on such a large area for such a long time.

The next year, another judge remarked that he had never seen a flower bed in front of a Canadian post office before. This bed was grown by the Pincher Planters.

As the group retires, there are 24 flower beds in eight spots around town to their credit.

This has required a considerable amount of work. Out of 20 people on the volunteer list, 15 were occasional planters while a core group of five were consistently at work.

The group contributed between 700 and 800 hours of volunteer work to their projects each year, which they feel saved the town and municipal district a huge sum.

Enduring 19 years is perhaps Noreen’s proudest achievement for the group, as she feels the odds have often been stacked against them.

Pincher Creek now bids adieu to a valuable group of volunteers, people who have served the town not only through their lovely floral displays but also through bringing recognition to the community.

Historic police barracks to be restored and enhanced

By Brad Quarin A dream to make the former Alberta Provincial Police building in Coleman the definitive destination for telling the history of the APP took a leap forward last week.

Officials, Crowsnest Historical Society members and officers of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police gathered at the building for a groundbreaking ceremony kicking off an exterior addition to the building along with interior renovations.

“It’s a very, very exciting day,” said historical society president Pat Rypien. “I’m really looking forward to what will roll out from here.”

“We have the building here, and the history that’s attached to it is very significant not only to home but to the entire country,” she says. “Hopefully, once the building is recreated to what it should be … it will be a major attraction not only to the country, but to the world.”

The APP came into being after the departure of the Royal Northwest Mounted Police and were active throughout Alberta from 1917 to 1932.

Meet Me at the Movies opens fall season Submitted by Jillian Lynn Lawson The Allied Arts Council of Pincher Creek and the Crowsnest Pass Allied Arts Association are again presenting movies from Toronto International Film Festival’s Film Circuit.

The Meet Me at the Movies fall season begins at Fox Theatre in Pincher Creek on Sept. 19 with a cheer for the underdog, or Dark Horse, which ScreenDaily calls “a David and Goliath tussle between a horse-owning syndicate from a small Welsh village and the elite of the racing world.”

Next, Sing Street, which Rolling Stone describes as “the most romantic movie you’ll find anywhere these days, brimming over with music, fun and the thrill of first love,” will play Oct. 3 at Frank Slide Interpretive Centre.

The Man Who Knew Infinity is a labour of love and admiration for the self-taught Hindu mathematical genius Srinivasa Ramanujan, who changed mathematics and science forever, and his friendship with Cambridge mathematician G.H. Hardy. Starring audience favourites Dev Pate, of Slumdog Millionaire fame, and Jeremy Irons, the film will play on Oct. 17 at Frank Slide Interpretive Centre.

Japanese film Our Little Sister is the story of three women who discover at their father’s funeral that they have a young half-sister whom they invite to live with them. Reviewer Simon Abrams says the film’s “deceptive air of lightness is a remarkable source of small-scale joy and sadness” that “encourages viewers to slow down and take stock of their lives’ defining little moments.” New York Times reviewer A.O. Scott says, “You are shaken, by the end, how much you care about these women and how sorry you are to leave their company.” This will play on Oct. 24 at Fox Theatre.

The Dressmaker is colourfully described by the Guardian as a rollicking Australian “loud, batty, fancy-frocked, sashed-and-stockinged revenge story somewhere between an outback period piece and a Wile E. Coyote cartoon … less about healing old wounds than sending old grievances to kingdom come.”

The New York Times describes our season finale, Captain Fantastic, as “pleasurably freewheeling” and the director’s “insistence on taking your intelligence for granted itself … a great turn on.”

APP BARRACKS, continued from page 14 The history of the APP is closely related to that of Prohibition in Alberta.

In particular, the Coleman barracks was where Const. Stephen Lawson was shot, an incident which contributed to the end of Prohibition.

This makes Coleman the ideal place for the telling of APP history, with a Legends of Prohibition exhibit planned at the building. The APP building is conveniently situated two doors down from Crowsnest Museum.

The sod-turning ceremony marked commencement of work on the back addition. The work will be done by the local company Reimer Construction.

The addition at the back of the building will make it more accessible.

Three RCMP officers attended as the historic police and their building are of interest to them.

Sgt. Greg Wiebe, whose father was also an RCMP member, says the RCMP is an organization steeped in tradition. He is also on the museum’s committee working on the project.

Current renovations are important, but are not the first efforts to restore the barracks.

Historical society member Fred Bradley told the crowd at the ceremony that the society purchased the building in 2002 and raised funds to give it a new foundation, roof and chimney.

The current work is enabled by a $103,000 Canada 150 Community Infrastructure Program grant and $102,000 from the Community and Facility Enhancement Program.

Thanks to a $49,000 grant from the Alberta Historical Resources Foundation, there will be new windows and restored siding.

The Community Foundation of Lethbridge and Southwestern Alberta, which is funded by people who would like to see their money go towards the support of communities, contributed $107,000 to the project.

Fundraisers are still being held for the exhibits, Fred said.

Lynnette Jessop, a member of the construction committee, believes the exterior addition will be completed by the end of the month.

The opening of the building and the exhibit, Legends of Prohibition, is planned for Canada Day, 2017.

As part of their daily commute, SNOLAB employees must take an ear-popping elevator ride down a mineshaft at a speed of 10 metres per second, followed by a long stroll through the dark tunnels of Vale Creighton mine. Then, it’s shower time: entering the lab requires stripping down, washing up, and finally zipping into clean room attire.

Why so deep?

To shield the lab from cosmic rays, of course! Simply put, the experiments performed at SNOLAB use equipment so sensitive that the normal amount of radiation and particles found on Earth would render it useless.

Imagine trying to weigh a single snowflake during a blizzard — and then imagine that the snow is also invisible.

This is also why extreme cleanliness is required of anyone who steps foot inside the lab.

Particle physics and its related fields are astoundingly complex, but their main goal boils down to explaining how our world works at the most fundamental level.

The key to understanding what’s actually going on in the universe — why atoms are able to form planets and stars, and what holds everything together — is hidden, scientists think, in dark matter. But before physicists can start studying dark matter, they need to find it.

That’s where DEAP-3600, a giant, spherical, alien-like contraption nestled inside SNOLAB, comes into play. The DEAP-3600 experiment is one of 11 currently underway at SNOLAB. The device, whose goal is to detect dark matter in hopes of unravelling its mysteries, is the most sensitive of its kind in the world. Researchers hope to start collecting and analyzing data from the experiment in 2016, but no one really knows what results, if any, this ambitious endeavour will yield.

One thing is certain, however: Canada is a leading contributor to the complex field of particle astrophysics, and DEAP-3600 has a strong potential for groundbreaking discovery.

The Sudbury Neutrino Observatory, precursor of the DEAP project and SNOLAB as a whole, provided crucial insight into the behaviour of neutrinos — a milestone advancement in the field.

Queen’s University physicist Arthur McDonald co-won the 2015 Nobel Prize in physics for his work on the SNO. His efforts helped pave the way for what is now, some believe, humanity’s best chance yet of finding the missing piece in an incredibly complex puzzle.

The balsam fir (Abies balsamea) became New Brunswick’s arboreal emblem in 1987. This tree is an important part of the province’s history of pulp and paper production. The wood is also used for lumber.

Challenges of living with FASD Submitted by McMan Youth, Family and Community Services Association Each individual with fetal alcohol spectrum disorder is affected differently, ranging from mild intellectual and behavioural issues to profound disabilities or premature death.

The effects are dependent on the timing, frequency and amount of alcohol consumed by the mother during pregnancy.

The brain is a very complex and interactive organ.

When parts of the brain are permanently damaged, information is not fully received and processed.

Behavioural and performance issues attract the most attention.

The most outstanding characteristics of FASD are

poor judgment and the inability to understand the connection between an act and its consequences.

It is estimated that 90 per cent of the people living with FASD also have attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. There is an overstimulation in the brain that affects their ability to hear you and learn.

A person living with FASD may experience challenges in one or more of the following areas: • IQ ranging from 20 to 130.

• Memory issues, especially short-term and in developing long-term memory, inability to pay attention.

• Language issues — often speaks well but comprehension is often lacking.

• Can talk the talk but unable to walk the walk.

Roman Rojek 1926 – 2016

Mr. Roman Rojek of Blairmore fought his final battle, passing away into the arms of our Lord on Sept. 7, 2016, at the Crowsnest Pass Health Care Centre at the glorious age of 90 years.

Roman was born March 10, 1926, in Jaroslawicze-Wolyn, Poland, to Stanislaw and Juzefa Rojek. Throughout his life, Roman faced adversities that would defeat most people. On Feb. 10, 1940, he and his family were harshly deported to Siberia and he was released on amnesty from the labour camp on Feb. 10, 1942.

Overcoming starvation and constant physical exhaustion, and although underage, he enlisted in the Polish armed forces and was later evacuated from Russia via Persia to England in 1942. In 1944, he fought in Normandy, France, Holland and Germany and served in the 1st Polish Armoured Division in Western Europe, and by the end of the war was honourably discharged.

In 1947, he immigrated to Halifax, N.S., and travelled across Canada to Lethbridge, where he laboured on a beet farm. He met the love of his life, Marcelina Zoledziewska, and they were married on April 29, 1950. He worked in the coal mines and railway.

In 1951, Roman moved to Barons and later to Vulcan to work for the CPR, and in 1952 he moved to Coleman. He made Blairmore his final home in 1958. He worked for the CPR for 33 years until his well-earned retirement in 1984.

Roman had an interest in and talent for mechanical work, carpentry, gardening and photography, as well as learning about history and the Second World War. He appreciated the majestic mountains of the Pass and its people.

Throughout the many severe trials and tribulations in his life, including his recent compromised health, Roman remained positive and grateful, with a wonderful sense of humour and a quick smile. Although he was an inspiration and strength to all of us, it was his love for his family and friends, and his faith in the Lord, that he would want to be remembered.

He is survived by his daughter, Krystyna (Ranald) Ross of Calgary; his sister, Mary Kepa of Nanaimo; numerous nieces and a nephew; extended family; and all those he knew throughout his lifetime.

Roman was predeceased by his cherished wife, Marcelina; his mother, Juzefa Rojek (nee Golec); his father, Stanislaw Rojek; his stepmother, Elizabeth Rojek (nee Podolska); his stepsister, Boguslawa; his brothers, Eugene and Walter; his stepbrothers, Bogdan and Henryk; his nephew Edward Kepa; and his nieces Helen Rojek and Diane Rymell.

The funeral mass was held on Sept. 12, 2016, at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Blairmore, with the Very Rev. Father Jack Pereira, VG, and Father Ben Marino officiating. Interment followed in St. Anne’s Cemetery. Special tributes were provided by the family and the Royal Canadian Legion.

Louis Mundie 1946 – 2016

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Louis Mundie, recently of Pincher Creek, who was called to be with the Lord on Sept. 6, 2016, while receiving care at the Pincher Creek Health Centre. He was blessed with 69 years of life.

Louis was born in Lethbridge to proud parents, Wilfred and Mary Mundie. The family moved to Blairmore and Louis was raised with a great appreciation for the natural beauty and the people of the community.

As a young man, he moved to Calgary and worked at the bus depot, and eventually moved back to Blairmore to live and care for his mother. Louis then retired to Pincher Creek to reside at Whispering Winds Village until his death.

Throughout his life, he enjoyed meeting people. He especially cherished and respected children, nature, his religious faith and, above all, his cat Mindy. He was a gentle soul, with an occasional determined opinion, who had a great capacity for compassion and understanding. He will be greatly missed but always fondly remembered.

Louis is survived by his beloved sister, Margaret Lajeunesse of Carstairs, Alta.; his brother, Donald (Marie) Mundie of Calgary; his nieces, Shantel Lajeunesse, Barbara (Art) Bonner, Brenda (Duane) Robbins and Lisa (Wayne) Harvey; his nephews, Laren Lajeunesse and Jerryd Lajeunesse; his great-nieces, Erin Bonner, Brittany Robbins, Shelby Robbins and Katelyn Harvey; his great-nephew, Jon Harvey; and great-great-uncle to Nixon Watmough, Tate Knight and Alexis Taylor.

He was predeceased by his parents, Wilfred and Mary Mundie, and by his beloved feline friend, Mindy.

The memorial mass will be held on Thursday, Sept. 15, 2016, at 2 p.m. at the Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Church, 13126 21st Ave. in Blairmore, with Father Ben Marino as celebrant. Interment to follow the reception in the family section in St. Anne’s Cemetery.

Donations may be made to the local SPCA in lieu of flowers. Condolences may be registered at www.fantinsfuneralchapel.ca.
